Polyamines (PAs) are positively charged molecules known to mitigate drought stress; however, little is known about their mechanism of alleviating drought stress. We investigated the effects of PAs exogenously applied as a seed primer and as a foliar spray on the growth, membrane stability (MS), electrolyte leakage (EL), Na+ and K+ cations, reactive oxygen species (ROS), catalase (CAT; EC 1.11.1.6) and guaiacol peroxidase (GPX; EC 1.11.1.7) activity and chloroplast ultra-structure in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.; cv. Sakha-94) under drought stress. Three PA solutions, namely, putrescine, spermine and a mixture of the two (Mix), were each applied at a concentration of 100 µM. Our study demonstrated that the retardation of chlorophyll loss and elevation of Rubisco levels were involved in PA-enhanced growth under drought stress. These relationships were mainly reflected in elevated fresh weight and dry weight in response to foliar spraying with all PA solutions and seed priming with the Mix solution. The elevated growth seemed to be due to increased photosynthetic pigments, protein and Rubisco. In contrast, drought decreased growth, photosynthetic pigments, protein and Rubisco. MS was enhanced by PAs applied as a seed primer or foliar spray, as shown by clear reductions in EL %, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and the Na+/K+ ratio as well as reduced ROS markers and elevated CAT (but not GPX) activity. Further study showed that the Mix solution of PAs, applied either during seed priming or as a foliar spray, improved chloroplast ultra-structure, suggesting that improvements in Rubisco and photosynthetic pigments were involved in PA maintenance of chloroplast stability. Therefore, the present study showed that elevated CAT activity is the main mechanism through which PAs reduce ROS and MDA, thereby improving MS and protecting mesophyll cells structurally and functionally under drought stress in wheat.  相似文献

Plant growth is often affected with hampered physiological and cellular functioning due to salinity and drought stress. To assess the effectiveness of plant bioregulators (PBRs) in mitigating abiotic stresses, a double spilt plot field study was conducted with three replications at ICAR-CSSRI, research farm, Nain, Panipat. The study comprised of three deficit irrigation regimes viz., 100, 80 and 60% of crop evapo-transpiration (ETc) (I1, I2 and I3), four levels of irrigation water salinity i.e. 2, 4, 8, 12 dS m−1 (S0, S1, S2 and S3) and two PBRs salicylic acid (SA; G1) and thiourea (TU; G2). Irrigations, as per regimes and salinity, were applied at identified critical stages of wheat and if needed in pearl millet. PBRs were applied as seed priming and foliar sprays at two sensitive stages of respective crops. The trend of plant height, and physiological and biochemical traits was similar under different treatments at both stages, but differed significantly only at reproductive stage. Water deficit caused significant reduction in pearl millet (5.1%) and wheat (6.7%) grain yields. The reduction in grain yield under 8 and 12 dS m−1 was 12.90 and 22.43% in pearl millet and 7.68 and 32.93% in wheat, respectively compared to 2 dS m−1. Application of either SA (G1) or TU (G2) significantly enhanced plant height and grain yield, but magnitude of the increment was higher with SA in pearl millet and with TU in wheat. Application of SA and TU increased grain yield by 14.42 and 12.98 in pearl millet, and 12.90 and 17.36% in wheat, respectively. The plant height, RWC, TC, MI, LP, proline, Fv/Fm and Na/K ratio significantly reduced by salinity stress in pearl millet and both water and salinity stress in wheat. Application of both PBRs proved beneficial to mitigate adverse effect of water deficit and salt stress by significantly improving physiological traits, biochemical traits and ultimately grain yield in both crops.  相似文献

Salicylic acid (SA) controls growth and stress responses in plants. It also induces drought tolerance in plants. In this paper, four wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars with different drought responses were treated with SA in three levels of drain (90, 60, 30% of maximum field capacity) to examine its interactive effects on drought responses and contents of osmotic solutes that may be involved in growth and osmotic adjustment. Under drought condition, the cultivars Geza 164 and Sakha 69 had the plant biomass and leaf relative water content (LRWC) greater than the cultivars Gemaza 1 and Gemaza 3. In all cultivars, drought stress decreased the biomass, LRWC, and the contents of inorganic solutes (Ca, K, Mg) and largely increased the contents of organic solutes (soluble sugars and proline). By contrast, SA increased the biomass, LRWC and the inorganic and organic solute contents, except proline. Correlation analysis revealed that the LRWC correlated positively with the inorganic solute contents but negatively with proline in all cultivars. SA caused maximum accumulations of soluble sugars in roots under drought. These results indicated that SA-enhanced tolerance might involve solute accumulations but independently of proline biosynthesis. Drought-sensitive cultivars had a trait lowering Ca and K levels especially in shoots. Possible functions of the ions and different traits of cultivars were discussed.  相似文献

The effects of bio-regulators salicylic acid (SA) and 24-epibrassinolide (EBL) as seed soaking treatment on the growth traits, content of photosynthetic pigments, proline, relative water content (RWC), electrolyte leakage percent (EC%), antioxidative enzymes and leaf anatomy of Zea mays L. seedlings grown under 60 or 120 mM NaCl saline stress were studied. A greenhouse experiment was performed in a completely randomized design with nine treatments [control (treated with tap water); 60 mM NaCl; 120 mM NaCl; 10 4 M SA; 60 mM NaCl + 10 4 M SA; 120 mM NaCl + 10 4 M SA; 10 μM EBL; 60 mM NaCl + 10 μMEBL or 120 mM NaCl + 10 μM EBL] each with four replicates. The results indicated that NaCl stress significantly reduced plant growth traits, leaf photosynthetic pigment, soluble sugars, RWC%, and activities of catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX) as well as leaf anatomy. However, the application of SA or EBL mitigated the toxic effects of NaCl stress on maize seedlings and considerably improved growth traits, photosynthetic pigments, proline, RWC%, CAT and POX enzyme activities as well as leaf anatomy. This study highlights the potential ameliorative effects of SA or EBL in mitigating the phytotoxicity of NaCl stress in seeds and growing seedlings.  相似文献

Drought is the most common form of abiotic stress that reduces plant growth and productivity. It causes plant injuries through elevated production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Potassium (K) is a vital plant nutrient that notably ameliorates the detrimental effect of drought stress in the plant. A pot experiment was conducted at the Laboratory of Plant Stress Responses, Faculty of Agriculture, Kagawa University, Japan, under controlled environment of green house to explore the role of K in mitigating drought severity in wheat (Triticum asevitum L.) seedlings. Three days after germination, seedlings were exposed to three water regimes viz., 100, 50, and 20% field capacity (FC) for 21 days. Potassium was adjusted in Hoagland nutrient solution at 0, 6 and 12 mM concentration and applied to pot instead of normal water. Results show that, water deficit stress notably reduced plant growth, biomass accumulation, leaf relative water content (RWC) along with reduced photosynthetic pigments. Increased amount of biochemical stress markers viz., malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), methylglyoxal (MG), proline (Pro) as well as an impaired antioxidant defense system were observed in drought affected wheat plants. On the contrary, K supplementation resulted in improvement of biochemical and physiological parameters that worked behind in improving growth and development of the wheat plants. In addition, enzymes of ascorbateglutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle were also enhanced by supplemented K that accelerated the ROS detoxification process in plant. Although glyoxalse system did not performed well till MG was detoxified might following another short stepped pathways. Our results revealed that drought stressed plants showed better performances in terms of biochemical and physiological attributes, antioxidant defense and glyoxalase system, as well as ROS detoxification due to K supplementation with better performance at 12 mM K added in 50% FC growing condition.  相似文献

The present study investigated the role of sugar beet extract (SBE) as a bio-stimulant to ameliorate the adverse effects of drought on seed germination and growth of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Different concentrations of SBE (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50%) were used for priming the wheat seeds. The experiment was conducted in laboratory (PEG-8000 was used to create water stress) as well as under natural environmental conditions (using soil with 100 and 60% field capacity). Significant ameliorating effects of seed priming with SBE were recorded on different germination attributes, i.e., time to 50% emergence (E50), germination index (GI), mean emergence time (MET), germination percentage (G%), coefficient of uniformity of emergence (CUE) and germination energy (GE) under water stress. Without priming, the plants exhibited symptoms of water stress like decreased biomass, reduction in photosynthetic pigments, e.g., chlorophyll, carotenoids. Seed pre-conditioning with SBE improved the plant growth, photosynthetic pigments, antioxidants’ activities and nutrient homeostasis of plants facing water deficit and grown under well-watered conditions. The maximum increase in biomass, content of chlorophyll, carotenoids and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) was 13.4, 8.5, 11.9, 7.6, 13.6, 42.0, 19.8%, respectively, with SBE seed priming under water stress. In conclusion, SBE seed priming effectively reduced the negativities of water stress on seed germination which resulted in better plant growth in terms of enhanced biomass, photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant defense mechanism and better nutrient homeostasis. Overall, the findings suggest that seed pre-conditioning with SBE as a bio-stimulant will be helpful for better crop stand establishment under low field capacity, especially in semi-arid and arid agricultural fields.  相似文献

Homobrassinolide (BR) was applied either as a seed treatment or foliar spray to two contrasting wheat varieties, viz. C306 (drought tolerant) and HD2329 (drought susceptible), to examine its effects on plant metabolism and grain yield under irrigated and moisture-stress/rainfed conditions. BR application resulted in increased relative water content, nitrate reductase activity, chlorophyll content and photosynthesis under both conditions. BR application also improved membrane stability (lower injury). These beneficial effects resulted in higher leaf area, biomass production, grain yield and yield related parameters in the treated plants. All the treatments were significantly better than the untreated control. Generally, 0.05 ppm either as a seed treatment or foliar spray was more effective than the 0.01 ppm treatment. The drought-tolerant genotype C306 showed more response to BR application under moisture-stress/rainfed condition than HD 2329. Increased water uptake, membrane stability and higher carbon dioxide and nitrogen assimilation rates under stress seemed to be related to homobrassinolide-induced drought tolerance.  相似文献

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill) is a high-value medicinal and essential oil bearing plant used extensively in pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industries. A pot experiment was carried out in the natural conditions of net house to resolve whether the foliar application of salicylic acid (SA) might enhance the growth, yield and essential oil production of fennel. Plants were sprayed three times with SA. The first spray was carried out at 40?days after sowing (DAS); the second and third sprays were applied one and 2?weeks later, the plants were sprayed with deionised water (control) and different concentrations of SA (10?5, 10?4 and 10?3?M). The foliar spray of SA at 10?4?M significantly enhanced the vegetative growth (shoot and root lengths, fresh and dry weights), physiological and biochemical characteristics (chl ??a??, chl ??b??, total chlorophyll and carotenoids contents, nitrate reductase activity, carbonic anhydrase activity, leaf-N, -P and -K contents), yield characteristics (number of umbels and fruits, 1,000-seed weight and seed yield) and essential oil yield of fennel. GLC analysis revealed the significant increase in the components of essential oil, viz. trans-anethole (80.4?C84.7?%), methyl chavicol (2.3?C2.5?%) and fenchone (5.6?C7.9?%). It was concluded that foliar spray of SA at 10?4?M might be employed for enhancing the plant growth as well as yield and quality of essential oil of fennel.  相似文献

Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria were isolated and characterized from sandy soils in Pakistan. The role of the rhizobacteria, in association with plant growth regulators, was studied on the roots of wheat grown under water stressed conditions. The plant growth promoting rhizobacteria were characterized on the basis of colony morphology, biochemical traits and identified on the basis of 16S-rRNA gene sequencing which identified the selected isolates Planomicrobium chinense, Bacillus cereus and Pseudomonas fluorescens. Antibacterial and antifungal activities were determined. The fresh cultures (24 h old) of isolates were used to soak the seeds for 2–3 h prior to sowing. The growth regulators salicylic acid and putrescine were applied to the plant as foliar spray at three leaf stage. The plant growth promoting rhizobacteria produced exopolysaccharides that formed soil aggregation around roots of the plants and significantly enhanced water holding capacity of sandy soil. The relative water content (80%) of leaves and root fresh (80%) and dry weight (68%) were higher in plant growth promoting rhizobacteria inoculated plants. The nutrient content of rhizosphere soil of treated plants was also enhanced (Ca 35%, K 34%, Mg 52% and Na 42%) over stressed controls. Integrative use of effective plant growth promoting rhizobacteria in combination with salicylic acid appears to be an effective eco-friendly approach to increase drought tolerance in wheat plants to combat desertification.  相似文献

Terminal drought and seed priming improves drought tolerance in wheat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Plants retain the preceding abiotic stress memory that may aid in attainment of tolerance to subsequent stresses. This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of terminal drought memory (drought priming) and seed priming in improving drought tolerance in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). During first growing season, wheat was planted in field under optimal (well-watered) and drought stress imposed at reproductive stage (BBCH growth stage 49) until maturity (BBCH growth stage 83). Seeds collected from both sources were subjected to hydropriming or osmopriming (with 1.5% CaCl2 solution); while, dry seed was taken as control. Treated and control seeds, from both sources, were sown in soil filled pots. After the completion of seedling emergence, pots were maintained at 50% water holding capacity (drought) or 100% water holding capacity (well-watered). Drought stress suppressed the plant growth (2–44%), perturbed water relations (1–18%) and reduced yield (192%); however, osmolytes accumulation (3–14%) and malondialdehyde contents (26–29%) were increased under drought. The crop raised from the seeds collected from terminal drought stressed plants had better growth (5–63%), improved osmolyte accumulation (13–45%), and lower lipid peroxidation (3%) than the progeny of well-watered crop. Seed priming significantly improved the crop performance under drought stress as compared to control. However, osmopriming was more effective than hydropriming in this regard as it improved leaf area (9–43%), tissue water status (2–47%), osmolytes accumulation (6–48%) and grain yield (14–79%). In conclusion, terminal drought induced modifications in seed composition and seed priming improved transgenerational drought tolerance through improvement in tissue water status and osmolytes accumulation, and decrease in lipid peroxidation.  相似文献

Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni) is an alternative sugar crop currently gaining importance in several geographic regions of the world. Generally, crop is propagated by seeds; however, low seed germination hinders the adaptability of the crop in different cropping systems. Seed priming with different compounds improves germination of several arable crops under stressful and benign environmental conditions. This study evaluated the role of different seed priming agents and priming durations on stand establishment, allometric and yield-related traits, and steviol glycosides contents of Stevia in two different experiments. The first experiment consisted of five different seed priming agents (i.e., hydropriming with distilled water, ascorbic acid, potassium chloride, benzyl amine purine and unprimed seeds) and five priming durations (0, 8, 16, 24 and 32 h). Seed priming with potassium chloride (KCl) and benzyl amine purine (BAP) for 32 h improved stand establishment and biochemical attributes of Stevia seeds. Therefore, these two seed priming agents along with unprimed seeds were included in the second experiment to quantify their impact on allometric and yield-related traits and steviol glycosides contents. Seed priming with both KCl and BAP resulted in better allometric traits (plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf area and chlorophyll index) compared with unprimed seeds. Similarly, seed priming with KCl resulted in higher fresh and dry biomass production of stem and leaves. Nonetheless, higher stevioside and rebaudioside A contents were recorded for the seeds primed with KCl, whereas unprimed seeds resulted in the lowest values. It is concluded that Stevia seeds must be primed with KCl for 32 h before sowing to get higher seed germination, leaf yield and steviol glycosides contents. Nonetheless, the role of KCl priming in improving abiotic stress tolerance of Stevia must be explored in the future studies.  相似文献

To investigate the genetic basis of drought tolerance in soybean ( Glycine max L. Merr.) a recombinant inbred population with 184 F2:7:11 lines developed from a cross between Kefeng1 (drought tolerant) and Nannong1138-2 (drought sensitive) were tested under water-stressed and well-watered conditions in field and greenhouse trials. Traits measured included leaf wilting coefficient, excised leaf water loss and relative water content as indicators of plant water status and seed yield. A total of 40 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were identified: 17 for leaf water status traits under drought stress and 23 for seed yield under well-watered and drought-stressed conditions in both field and greenhouse trials. Two seed yield QTLs were detected under both well-watered and drought-stressed conditions in the field on molecular linkage group H and D1b, while two seed yield QTLs on molecular linkage group C2 were found under greenhouse conditions. Several QTLs for traits associated with plant water status were identified in both field and greenhouse trials, including two leaf wilting coefficient QTLs on molecular linkage group A2 and one excised leaf water loss QTL on molecular linkage group H. Phenotypic correlations of traits suggested several QTLs had pleiotropic or location-linked associations. These results will help to elucidate the genetic basis of drought tolerance in soybean, and could be incorporated into a marker-assisted selection breeding program to develop high-yielding soybean cultivars with improved tolerance to drought stress.  相似文献

This work aims to study the effect of foliar spraying of three anti-transpirants i.e., A1: tryptophan (Tri), A2: potassium silicate (KS), A3: chitosan (Chi) as well as A0: control (Tap water) under three irrigation regimes, I1: 2400, I2: 3600, and I3: 4800 m3ha?1 on the quality and production of faba bean crop and its nutrient contents. The study was carried out during two successive winter seasons of 2018/2019 and 2019/2020. Drought stress affected the average performance of all studied traits as it reduced seed yield and traits, as a result of the decrease in chlorophyll related to photosynthesis, protein, carbohydrates, total phenols, amino acids, macronutrients (N, P, and K), micronutrient contents (Fe, Mn, and Zn) and their absorption. The single foliar spraying of faba bean with tryptophan 75 ppm, potassium silicate at 100 ppm, or chitosan at 750 ppm significantly increased all studied traits and reduced the drought stress compared to control under different irrigation systems. We recommended using a foliar spray of chitosan (750 ppm) on faba bean plants under an irrigation level of 4800 m3 led to an improvement in the physiological properties of the plant, i.e., plant height, the number of branches/plants, and the number of plants, pods plant?1, the number of seed pods?1, the weight of 100 seeds and seed yield ha?1 increased with relative increase about 42.29, 89.47, 28.85, 75.91, 24.43, and 306.48% compared to control. The quality properties also improved, as the total chlorophyll, protein, carbohydrates, total phenols, and amino acids were higher than the control with a relative increase of 63.83, 29.58, 27.72, 37.54, and 64.19%. Additionally, an increase in the contents and uptake of macronutrients (N, P, and K), and micronutrients (Fe, Mn, Zn) and their absorption. The increase was estimated with 29.41, 75.00, 16.56, 431.17, 630.48, 72.68%, 22.37, 35.69, 42.33, 397.63, 452.58, and 485.94% about the control. This was followed by potassium silicate (100 ppm), then tryptophan (75 ppm) compared to the control, which recorded the minimum values ??in plant traits.  相似文献

Brassinolide (BR) is a relatively new plant growth regulator. To test whether BR could be used to increase tolerance to water deficits in soybean, the effects of BR application on photosynthesis, assimilate distribution, antioxidant enzymes and seed yield were studied. BR at 0.1 mg l−1 was foliar applied at the beginning of bloom. Two levels of soil moisture (80% field capacity for well-watered control and 35% for drought-stressed treatment) were applied at pod initiation. BR treatment increased biomass accumulation and seed yield for both treatments. Drought stress inhibited translocation of assimilated 14C from the labeled leaf, but BR increased the translocation for both treatments. Drought stress depressed chlorophyll content and assimilation rate (A), while chlorophyll content and A of BR-treated plants were greater than that of drought-stressed plants. BR treatment increased maximum quantum yield of PS II, the activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase, and the leaf water potential of drought-stressed plants. Treatment with BR also increased the concentration of soluble sugars and proline, and the activities of peroxidase and superoxide dismutase of soybean leaves when drought-stressed. However, it decreased the malondialdehyde concentration and electrical conductivity of leaves under drought stress. This study show that BR can be used as a plant growth regulator to enhance drought tolerance and minimize the yield loss of soybean caused by water deficits.  相似文献

Water is a main factor limiting plant growth. Integrative responses of leaf traits and whole plant growth to drought will provide implications to vegetation restoration. This study investigated the drought responses of Vitex negundo L. var. heterophylla (Franch.) Rehd. with a focus on leaf morphology and physiology, seedling growth and biomass partitioning. Potted 1-year-old seedlings were subjected to four water supply regimes [75, 55, 35 and 15% field capacity (FC)], served as control, mild water stress, moderate water stress and severe water stress. Leaf morphological traits varied to reduce the distance of water transfer under water stress and leaflets were dispersed with drought. Net photosynthetic rate decreased significantly under water stress: stomatal closure was the dominant limitation at mild and moderate drought, while metabolic impairment was dominant at severe drought. The physiological impairment at severe drought could also be detected from the relative lower water use efficiency and non-photochemical quenching to moderate water stress. Total biomass of well-watered plants was more than twice that at moderate water deficit and nearly ten times that at severe water deficit. In summary, V. negundo var. heterophylla had adaptation mechanism to water deficit even in the most serious condition, but different strategies were adopted. Seedlings invested more photosynthate to roots at mild and moderate drought while more photosynthate to leaves at severe drought. A nearly stagnant seedling growth and a sharp decline of total biomass were the survival strategy at severe water stress, which was not favorable to vegetation restoration. Water supply above 15% FC is recommended for the seedlings to vegetation restoration.  相似文献

This study evaluated the change induced by the year season and by experimentally induced drought on foliar element stoichiometry of the predominant woody species (Quercus ilex and Erica multiflora) in two Mediterranean ecosystems, a forest and a shrubland. This study is based in two long-term (11 yr) field experiments that simulated drought throughout the annual cycle. The effects of experimental droughts were significant but weaker than the changes produced by ontogeny and seasonality. Leaf N and P concentrations were higher in spring (the main growing season) in E. multiflora and, in Q. ilex in autumn (a period of additional growth). Leaf N:P ratios were lower in spring. In Q. ilex, the highest leaf K concentrations and leaf K:P ratios, and the lowest leaf C:K and N:K ratios, occurred in summer, the season when water stress was greatest. In E. multiflora, leaf K concentrations and K:P ratios were highest, and leaf C:K and N:K ratios were lowest in the plants from the drought-treated plots. The plant capacity to change K concentrations in response to seasonality and to drought is at least as great as the capacity to change N and P concentrations. The results underscore the importance of K and its stoichiometry relative to C, N and P in dry environments. These results indicate first, that N:P ratio shifts are not uniquely related to growth rate in Mediterranean plants but also to drought, and second, that there is a need to take into account K in ecological stoichiometry studies of terrestrial plants.  相似文献

The influence of varying concentrations (0, 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 % v/v) of neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf extract on drought stressed (40 % field capacity) quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) plants was assessed. During the current study two cultivars of quinoa (V7 and V9) were used. This study revealed that water stress adversely affects the fresh and dry weight of shoots and roots as well as chlorophyll pigments (a and b) of both quinoa cultivars. In contrast, drought stress enhanced glycinebetaine (GB), free proline, phenolic content, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) enzymes, and relative membrane permeability (RMP). However, application of neem leaf extract improved the accumulation of key osmoprotectants like proline, GB and activities of enzymatic antioxidants. Our findings showed 5 % neem leaf extract is an effective treatment in counteracting the oxidative damage caused by water stress, thereby improving overall plant growth. Of both cultivars of quinoa, the response of cv. V9 to stress as well as foliar applied neem was relatively more promising.  相似文献

Drought stress hampers rice performance principally by disrupting the plant–water relations and structure of biological membranes. This study appraised the role of polyamines (PAs) in improving drought tolerance in fine grain aromatic rice (Oryza sativa L.). Three PAs [putrescine (Put), spermidine (Spd) and spermine (Spm)] were used each at 10 μM as seed priming (by soaking seeds in solution) and foliar spray. Primed and non-primed seeds were sown in plastic pots with normal irrigation in a phytotron. At four-leaf stage, plants were subjected to drought stress by bringing the soil moisture down to 50% of field capacity by halting water supply. For foliar application, 10 μM solutions each of Put, Spd and Spm were sprayed at five-leaf stage. Results revealed that drought stress severely reduced the rice fresh and dry weights, while PAs application improved net photosynthesis, water use efficiency, leaf water status, production of free proline, anthocyanins and soluble phenolics and improved membrane properties. PAs improved drought tolerance in terms of dry matter yield and net photosynthesis was associated with the maintenance of leaf water status and improved water use efficiency. Among the antioxidants, catalase activity was negatively related to H2O2 and membrane permeability, which indicated alleviation of oxidative damage on cellular membranes by PAs application. Foliar application was more effective than the seed priming, and among the PAs, Spm was the most effective in improving drought tolerance.  相似文献

The paper studied the effects of drought stress, selenium (Se) supply and their combination on growth and physiological characteristics of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv Shijiazhuang NO. 8) seedlings. The experimental design included two water treatments (well-watered, 75% of maximum field capacity; drought stress, 30% of maximum field capacity) and two Se levels (0; 0.5 mg/kg) to determine whether Se can modify the negative impacts of drought stress on seedling growth and physiological traits. Drought stress caused a marked decline in growth parameters and soluble protein content, whereas it induced an increase in root activity, proline content and the activities of peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) of leaf tissue. On the other hand, Se supply induced an increase in biomass accumulation only under well-watered condition. Under drought stress, Se supply increased free proline content, root activity and the activities of POD and CAT in leaf tissue, but did not significantly affect on growth parameters. These results implied that drought stress brought harmful effects on wheat seedlings, and that Se supply was favorable for biomass accumulation of wheat seedlings under well-watered condition. However, it did not significantly affect on biomass accumulation under drought stress, although it increased root activity and activities of some antioxidant index in experimental periods.  相似文献

Drought stress substantially impedes crop productivity throughout the world. Microbial based approaches have been considered a potential possibility and are under study. Based on our prior screening examination, two distinct and novel biofilm-forming PGPR strains namely Bacillus subtilis-FAB1 and Pseudomonas azotoformans-FAP3 are encompassed in this research. Bacterial biofilm development on glass surface, microtiter plate and seedling roots were assessed and characterized quantitatively and qualitatively by light and scanning electron microscopy. Above two isolates were further evaluated for their consistent performance by inoculating on wheat plants in a pot-soil system under water stresses. Bacterial moderate tolerance to ten-day drought was recorded on the application of individual strains with wheat plants; however, the FAB1 + FAP3 consortium expressively improved wheat survival during drought. The strains FAB1 and FAP3 displayed distinct and multifunctional plant growth stimulating attributes as well as effective roots and rhizosphere colonization in combination which could provide sustained wheat growth during drought. FAB1 and FAP3-induced alterations cooperatively conferred improved plant drought tolerance by controlling physiological traits (gs, Ci, E, iWUE and PN), stress indicators (SOD, CAT, GR, proline and MDA content) and also maintained physico-chemical attributes and hydrolytic enzymes including DHA, urease, ALP, protease, ACP and β glucosidase in the soil. Our findings could support future efforts to enhance plant drought tolerance by engineering the rhizobacterial biofilms and associated attributes which requires in-depth exploration and exploiting potential native strains for local agricultural application.  相似文献
