The objectives of this study were to measure culling intervals and culling risks in the four stages of the reproductive life of female pigs and to compare culling intervals between the number of services and between herd groups, based on herd productivity. We also compared survival patterns of females pigs between these herd groups. Our data set included lifetime records of 52,792 females born between 2001 and 2004 in 101 commercial herds. Two herd groups were selected on the basis of the upper 25th percentile of pigs weaned per mated female per 5 yr between 2002 and 2006, namely the high-performing herds, and ordinary herds. Culled females were also allocated into four groups based on the stages of their reproductive life when culled: unmated gilts, mated gilts, unmated sows, and mated sows. Culling intervals in unmated gilts and mated gilts were defined as the number of days from birth to culling and from first mating to culling, respectively. Culling intervals in unmated sows and mated sows were the number of days from weaning to culling. The number of services was categorized into two groups: first service and reservice groups. Multilevel linear mixed-effects models and survival analysis were performed. Culling intervals (±SEM) in unmated gilts, mated gilts, unmated sows, and mated sows were 302.9 ± 1.16, 98.4 ± 0.92, 14.3 ± 0.12, and 89.6 ± 0.42 d, respectively. Culling risks in the four groups were 5.6%, 7.1%, 58.0%, and 29.3%, respectively. In unmated gilts, mated gilts, and mated sows, the culling intervals in the high-performing herds were 43.0, 18.9, and 16.0 d shorter than those in ordinary herds, respectively (P < 0.05), but no difference was found between the herd groups for the culling interval of unmated sows. For mated sows in the reservice group, culling intervals of high-performing herds were ≥13.7 d shorter than those of the ordinary herds (P < 0.05), but for mated sows in the first service group, there was no difference in the culling interval between the herd groups. The culling hazard from 8 wk postweaning for mated sows in high-performing herds increased more rapidly than that in ordinary herds. In conclusion, to reduce culling intervals and improve herd productivity, we recommend implementing a strict culling policy for mated gilts and mated sows, especially reserviced females.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to investigate the associations of weaning-to-first-mating interval (WMI) groups with reproductive performance, to determine the repeatability and the correlation coefficients in WMI groups between consecutive parities, and to investigate factors associated with the proportion of sows having WMI 4-6 days. This study was conducted using 55,690 parity records of 11,991 sows born during 1999 in 94 herds. Five groups of WMI were formed: 0-3, 4-6, 7-20, 21-27, and >/=28 days. The correlation and the repeatability of the WMI groups were determined using correlation analysis and variance component analysis. Mixed-effects models were used to analyze the associations of WMI groups with reproductive performance, and the associations of parity, lactation length (LL), and nursing piglets with the proportion of sows having WMI 4-6 days. The overall proportion of the WMI 4-6 days was 82.3%. Sows with WMI 4-6 days had the highest farrowing rate, and had more pigs born alive than those with WMI 7-20 days (P<0.01). At each farrowed parity, sows with WMI 4-6 days had higher parity at removal than those with WMI 7-20 days (P<0.01). The repeatability of the WMI groups was low (0.08), and the correlation coefficients of WMI groups between consecutive parities were also low (0.10/=7 days were also mated on 4-6 days postweaning at subsequent parity. Additionally, sows with parity >/=2, LL 24-28 days, and 9-10 nursing piglets were more likely to have WMI 4-6 days (P<0.01). In conclusion, sows having any WMI were more likely to be mated on 4-6 days postweaning at subsequent parity, and sows mated on 4-6 days had higher reproductive performance and higher longevity. Increased LL may increase the proportion of sows having WMI 4-6 days.  相似文献

The present study was conducted in a large Croatian "built up unit". The objective of the study was to determine if an indoor modified eros centre (MEC) compared to indoor or outdoor group housing of gilts, influenced the onset of puberty of gilts and the reproductive performance of the evaluated females (n = 783) over four parities. The gilts were from the same nucleus herd. Gilts of same age (140-150 days of age), body condition (body condition score of 3-4) and similar genetics (four-way cross females), during the same season (January to April 1999), were randomly divided at arrival into three groups and treated as follows:MEC gilts (n = 279): These were placed into indoor MEC pens in groups of 8-10. The gilts had continuous fenceline contact to boars (one boar to two groups of gilts, boars were changed daily) and to shortly weaned oestrous sows. Gilts were regrouped and dislocated at 10-day intervals. Outdoor gilts (n = 263): These were kept in groups of 8-10 on a large pasture (80-100 m2 per group). The animals had fenceline contact to mature boar for 5-10 min daily. Control indoor gilts (n = 241): These were housed indoors in large pens in groups of 8-10. The animals had fenceline contact to mature boars for 5-10 min daily. Each outdoor group had an insulated hut with straw bedding. All gilts were fed ad libitum with the same commercial diet. Housing gilts in MEC resulted in earlier (P < 0.001) onset of estrus (MEC: 174.8 +/- 2.4 days, indoor group housing: 207.6 +/- 4.1 days, outdoor group housing: 187.4 +/- 2.1 days) and lower (P < 0.001) farrowing rate to first service (MEC: 70.97%, indoor group housing: 89.73%, outdoor group housing: 89.62%). Farrowing rate of regularly returning MEC gilts to second service was 95.00%. First total-born litter size, first liveborn litter size, first wean-to-estrus interval (WEI), percent of sows bred after first weaning, second total-born litter size, second liveborn litter size, average third and fourth total-born and liveborn litter size, number of sows having four litters, number of litters per sow, total number of pigs per sow, total number of liveborn pigs per sow showed no significant differences between the groups. More (P < 0.05) sows were culled in outdoor group. Compared to MEC and outdoor housing, indoor housed sows suffered higher (P < 0.05) percentage of anoestrus.  相似文献

The ability of peforelin (l-GnRH-III) to stimulate follicular growth, FSH release, and estrus in gilts after altrenogest treatment and in sows after weaning was investigated. In three farrow-to-wean herds, with at least 600 sows and average production performance, 216 gilts, 335 primiparous, and 1299 pluriparous sows were randomly allocated to three treatments: peforelin (M group: Maprelin), eCG (F group: Folligon), and physiological saline solution (C group). Animals were treated 48 hours after their last altrenogest treatment (gilts) or 24 hours after weaning (sows). The weaning-to-estrus interval, estrus duration, estrus rate (ER), pregnancy rate, and total born (TB), live born, and stillborn (SB) numbers were recorded and compared between treatments for the different parity groups (gilts and primiparous and pluriparous sows). Follicle sizes were measured in representative animals from each group on the occasion of their last altrenogest treatment or at weaning, and also on the occasions of their first (FS1) and second (FS2) attempted inseminations. Blood samples were taken to determine FSH concentrations at weaning and 2 hours after injection, and progesterone concentrations 10 days after the first insemination attempt. The relative change in FSH concentrations was calculated. Significant differences were found for ER within 7 days of weaning in pluriparous sows (95%, 91%, and 90% for the M, F, and C groups, respectively, P = 0.005). Gilts in the F-group had high TB numbers, and pluriparous sows in the M group had high SB numbers (TB gilts = 13.6, 15.4, and 14.9 [P = 0.02] and SB pluriparous sows = 1.8, 1.4, and 1.7 [P = 0.05] for the M, F, and C groups, respectively). The M group had the highest FS1 (for gilts) and FS2 (for pluriparous sows) values: FS1 = 5.4, 4.9, and 4.9 mm [P = 0.02] and FS2 = 6.8, 5.3, and 6.3 mm [P = 0.03] for the M, F, and C groups, respectively. There were no significant differences between the different treatments within each parity group with respect to any of the other variables. Overall, peforelin treatment had small but positive effects on the ER and follicle growth in certain parity groups but did not seem to affect litter sizes or FSH and progesterone levels in sows on the occasions of the corresponding examinations.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to analyze reproductive performance in swine females re-serviced after return to estrus or abortion in comparison with females in first service (gilts or weaned females). Records used were obtained from four commercial sow herds in Brazil including 24,194 mating records from PigCHAMP research database. Three mating categories (first service in gilts or weaned sows, re-serviced after return to estrus and re-serviced after abortion) were considered for the analysis. The farrowing rate (FR) was less and return to estrus (RER), abortion rate (ABR) and total born (TB) were greater in the category re-serviced after return to estrus compared to first service category (P<0.05). The category re-serviced after abortion only differed from the first service category by a greater ABR (P<0.05). In gilts and PO2-5 females re-serviced after a return to estrus, the FR was less (72.0% and 83.2%) and RER was greater (22.3% and 12.5%) compared to first service PO2-5 sows (92.7% and 5.3%; P<0.05). A re-service after a return to estrus did not affect TB in PO > or =2 females (P>0.05) but resulted in less TB in gilts and greater TB in primiparous sows (P<0.05). In females re-serviced after a return to estrus the performance was similar (P>0.05) between the two intervals considered as regular return to estrus (18-24 days and 36-48 days). Among the intervals considered as irregular return to estrus, greater FR was observed in intermediate (25-35 days) than in early (11-17 days) or late (>48 days) intervals. The re-service after a return to estrus results in an impaired farrowing rate, with a greater impact on gilts than at older parities. Females re-serviced after abortion are more predisposed to the recurrence of this reproductive failure.  相似文献

This study was aimed firstly, to examine the ovaries in non-pregnant first served sows and gilts by transcutaneous ultrasonography and secondly, to evaluate the suitability for this procedure to be performed routinely on farms. Two thousand five hundred and twenty-three females on a 1250-sow unit, synchronized with Regumate (gilts only) and/or gonadotropins (sows and gilts) not detected as returned to estrus by daily boar contact prior to scanning were ultrasonographically tested for pregnancy between days 20 and 114 postinsemination (p.i.). Of 256 sows (S) and 130 gilts (G) found to be non-pregnant the ovaries were visualized in 87.1 and 80.0% of them, respectively. Ovarian findings were: corpora lutea (CL); follicles of 2-6mm (F(2-6)); peri-ovulatory ovarian structures (POS; comprising follicles of 7-8mm and corpora haemorrhagica); single cysts (SC); oligocystic ovarian degeneration (OOD) and polycystic ovarian degeneration (POD). Their incidence was: CL>F2-6>POS>POD ( P<0.05 ) in both S and G. POD and SC plus OOD were more frequently in S ( P<0.05 ). The ovarian findings were related to the intervals of regular (days 18-25 p.i. (R1), 38-46 p.i. (R2)) and irregular service returns (days 26-37 p.i. (IR1), 47-114 p.i. (IR2)). Comparison within intervals: CL tended to be more frequently with P<0.05 only at IR2 in S. Comparison among intervals (R1 to IR2): The percentage of females (1) with CL tended to increase (S and G) and (2) with F2-6 plus POS decreased significantly (S; P<0.05 ) or tendentiously (G). SC plus OOD was higher before R2, POD after IR1 (S and G; P<0.05 ). In conclusion, the results indicate a high heterogeneity of ovarian structures in non-pregnant first served sows and gilts up to day 114 after service and suggest CL as an important cause for a delayed and, rather than POD, a failed service return. The results further demonstrate that transcutaneous ultrasonography is an appropriate and recommended method for examining the ovaries on farm in female pigs with reproductive failures.  相似文献

Limited information is available on lysine requirement estimates of modern, high-producing gestating sows Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of increasing standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine during gestation on piglet birthweight and reproductive performance of gilts and sows. A total of 936 females (498 gilts, 438 sows; Camborough®, PIC, Hendersonville, TN) were group-housed (approximately 275 females per pen) and individually fed with electronic sow feeders. Females were moved from the breeding stall to pens on d 4 of gestation and allotted to one of four dietary treatments on d 5. Dietary treatments included increasing SID lysine intake (11.0, 13.5, 16.0, and 18.5 g/d). Gilts (parity 1) and sows (parity 2+) received 2.1 and 2.3 kg (22.2 and 24.3 MJ net energy per day) of feed throughout the entire gestation period, respectively. Dietary treatments were achieved by different blends of low (0.48% SID lysine) and high (0.88% SID lysine) lysine diets, prepared by changing the amount of corn and soybean meal in these two diets. Female weight and backfat were recorded on d 4 and 111 of gestation. Individual piglet weight was obtained within 12 h of birth on litters from 895 females. Final weight, and calculated maternal BW, body lipid, and body lean at d 111 of gestation increased (linear, P < 0.01) for gilts and sows as SID lysine increased. There was no evidence for differences in final backfat depth. Average total born for gilts and sows was 15.3 and 16.0 pigs with no evidence for differences among treatments. The percentage of pigs born alive increased (P = 0.01) with increasing SID lysine intake for sows, but not in gilts as a result of a treatment by parity group interaction (P = 0.04) for percentage of stillborn pigs. Increasing SID lysine intake during gestation did not affect the percentage of mummified fetuses, total born, or birthweight of piglets born alive in this study. In addition, increasing SID lysine intake during gestation did not affect subsequent reproductive performance. In conclusion, increasing dietary SID lysine intake in gestation increased female BW, without changing backfat depth. The minimal effects on female reproductive performance and piglet birthweight suggest that 11 g/day of SID lysine intake appears to be adequate for gestating gilts and sows; however, providing sows with 18.5 g/d SID lysine reduced (P = 0.01) stillbirth rate by 2.3 percentage points.  相似文献

Progesterone (P4) plays a key role in pregnancy establishment and maintenance; during early pregnancy, P4 stimulates the production and release of uterine secretions necessary for conceptus growth prior to implantation; therefore, exogenous P4 supplementation may improve embryo development. This study evaluated the effects of supplementation during early pregnancy with long-acting injectable progesterone or altrenogest on embryonic characteristics of sows and gilts. Thus, a total of 32 sows and 16 gilts were used. On day 6 of pregnancy sows and gilts were allocated to one of the following groups: non-supplemented; supplemented with 20 mg of altrenogest, orally, from days 6 to 12 of pregnancy; supplemented with 2.15 mg/kg of long-acting injectable progesterone on day 6 of pregnancy. Animals were killed on day 28 of pregnancy, and ovulation rate, embryo survival, embryo weight, crown-to-rump length, uterine glandular epithelium and endometrial vascularization were assessed. Treatments had no effect on pregnancy rate, embryo survival or endometrial vascular density (P > 0.05). Non-supplemented gilts presented larger and heavier embryos compared to gilts from supplemented groups (P < 0.05). Sows in the altrenogest group presented larger and heavier embryos compared to non-supplemented sows and sows supplemented with long-acting injectable progesterone. In conclusion, supplementation of sows and gilts with progestagen from day 6 of pregnancy can be used as a means to improve embryo survival without deleterious effects.  相似文献

The reproductive performance of gilts and sows from two regions in Norway was investigated in a retrospective analysis of data from the litter recording system. In the Northern region (North; between 65°N and 71°N), there are extreme shifts in natural photoperiod between winter and summer. In the Southern region (South; between 59°N and 60°30′N), photoperiodic changes are less dramatic.

Gilts were 8 days older at first mating or insemination in the North than in the South (P<0.01). A significantly lower proportion of sows in the North were mated or inseminated within 5 days post-weaning than in the South, a difference present both among primiparous and multiparous sows (P<0.01). Overall farrowing rate in the North was lower than in the South, but litter size (total number born) among those pigs that farrowed was larger. After correction for year, month, breed and age at first service, there were still lower odds of farrowing for gilts in North than in South. Neither for primiparous nor multiparous sows were regional differences in farrowing probability significant when year, month, breed and weaning to service interval were included in the model. Gilts and primiparous sows had a lower probability of farrowing following insemination during summer or autumn months, but service month was not significantly related to the farrowing probability of multiparous sows.

For gilts, litter size was positively related to age at first service. For sows, litter size was lowest at weaning to service intervals between 6 and 10 days. Total numbers of piglets born per litter were estimated to be 0.36, 0.38 and 0.55 larger in the North than in the South (differences in least square means; gilts, primiparous sows and multiparous sows, respectively) (P<0.01). Litter size was lower after service during natural long photoperiod than during the rest of the year.  相似文献

Studies on the ovulation rate, prenatal survival and litter size of Chinese Meishan pigs have given widely divergent results depending on the extent of inbreeding of the animals, their original genetic diversity, the age and parity, and the conditions of management. To obtain meaningful results, it is necessary to characterize the population under study. The following report characterizes populations of Meishan and Yorkshire of a widely diverse background. First farrowing data were collected on 21 Meishan and 20 Yorkshire gilts. Meishan gilts had 12.4 fully formed piglets and Yorkshire gilts had 7.4 fully formed piglets (P < 0.01). Meishan gilts averaged 1.86 mummified fetuses per litter vs 0.05 per Yorkshire litter (P < 0.01). Yorkshire piglets averaged 1.3 kg body weight at birth vs 0.9 kg for Meishan piglets (P < 0.01). At 47 days of second gestation, 19 Meishan and 12 Yorkshire sows averaged 22.7 and 16.3 corpora lutea (CL), respectively (P < 0.01). Uterine length and number of fetuses were not different (P > 0.40) in the two breeds. Daily estrous detection of 50 Meishan and 34 Yorkshire gilts began at 60 and 120 days of age, respectively. Meishan gilts reached sexual maturity at 95 days of age, which was 105 days earlier than Yorkshire gilts (P < 0.01). Meishan gilts were in estrus nearly 1 day longer than Yorkshire gilts at first, second and third estrus (P < 0.05). No differences in cycle length between breeds were detected for the first or second estrous cycle (P > 0.60). Nineteen Meishan gilts were slaughtered at 51 days of gestation and their reproductive tracts were recovered. The mean number of dissected CL (17.0), number of fetuses (13.1), total uterine length (396 cm), spacing per fetus (29.9 cm), allantoic (124.9 ml) and amniotic (32.2 ml) volumes, crown-rump length (82.8 mm), weight (35.4 g), sex, and direction of each fetus were determined. Chinese Meishan gilts reached puberty much earlier and were in estrus longer than Yorkshire gilts and Meishan sows had more CL than Yorkshire sows.  相似文献

Fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) technology uses exogenous reproductive hormones to regulate the sexual cycle and ovulation of sows without oestrus identification, which improves the sow breeding utilisation rate, reduces the number of non-productive days, and elevates the efficiency of pig farm management. In this study, we aimed to optimise FTAI procedures. Healthy 190-day-old and about 90 kg Large White × Landrace crossing breed replacement gilts (n = 166) which were of unknown reproductive status were randomly selected and divided into three groups: a control group (n = 62), an eCG-15D group in which the gilts were pretreated with equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) injection 15 days before starting FTAI (n = 50), and an eCG-20D group pretreated with eCG injection 20 days before starting FTAI (n = 54). All three groups were then subjected to the same conventional FTAI procedure. Pigs were orally administered Altrenogest (ALT, 20 mg per pig per day) for 18 days and then 42 h after ALT feeding was stopped, they were injected with 1 000 IU eCG followed by 100 μg GnRH 80 h later. The gilts were inseminated for the first time 24 h after gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) injection and then again 16 h later. After 42 h of ALT feeding, gilts in the eCG-15D group displayed a higher follicular diameter until artificial insemination (AI) than those from the other groups (P < 0.05). In addition, the ovulation times were the most synchronised in the eCG-15D group, with 100% of the gilts ovulating before the second AI on day 25 of FTAI. Furthermore, the gilts in the eCG-15D group achieved the highest pregnancy rate (92%), farrowing rate (90%), total pigs born (11.59), and pigs born alive (11.18). Together, the findings of this study demonstrate that reproductive performance can be optimised by pretreating gilts with eCG 15 days before conventional FTAI.  相似文献

Alfaprostol, a new prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF) analog was given in a first trial at two dose levels known to be luteolytic (1 and 2 mg) to 200 sows and first litter gilts at the day of weaning after a 21-day lactation period; 189 controls received saline only. The treatment with alfaprostol shortened the interval to heat (6.0 vs 11.3 days; p<0.01) and increased the percentage of animals coming into heat within 10 days (84.0 vs 65.5%; p<0.01). Fertility to a.i. and litter size at the subsequent parturition were normal. In a second trial, 100 first litter gilts and 100 sows received alfaprostol, 1 or 2 mg, respectively, during July and August when high environmental temperatures tend to increase the rate of anestrus. Again, treatment with alfaprostol shortened effectively the interval to heat (5.9 vs 17.4 days in gilts, p<0.001; 5.6 vs 9.7 days in sows; p<0.01) and greatly increased the number of animals in heat (81 vs 47% in gilts, 83 vs 62% in sows; p<0.001). The effect on the seasonal incidence of clinical anestrus was marked; it was more pronounced in gilts than in sows, expressed by the length of time it took to resume cyclic functions and the lower percentage of animals coming into heat (p<0.001). The effect of alfaprostol was equally well expressed in first litter gilts and sows. In a third trial, 295 anestrous sows and gilts were treated on day 22 after weaning with either 2 mg alfaprostol, or 400 I.U. PMSG+200 I.U. hCG, or saline. Within five days after weaning, 38% of the alfaprostol treated, and 78% and 23% of the animals treated with PMSG/hCG and saline came into heat.  相似文献

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is an important pathogen that has a significant economic impact on the swine industry by imposing a high rate of mortality in suckling piglets. However, limited information on the productivity values of gilts and sows infected with PEDV is available. Here, we evaluate the productivity index in gilts and sows during the 1-year period before (19 January 2013 to 18 January 2014) and after (19 January 2014 to 18 January 2015) a PEDV outbreak from a 2000-sow breeding herd in Taiwan. The farrowing rate (FR), return rate (RR), total pigs born per litter (TB), pigs born alive per litter (BA), weaning pigs per litter (WPL), pre-weaning mortality, percentage of sows mated by 7 days after weaning, weaning to first service interval (WFSI), mated female nonproductive days (NPDs), replacement rate of sows and sow culling rate were compared using productive records. The FR (-9.6%), RR (+9.8%), TB (-1.6), BA (-1.1), WPL (-1.1), sows mated by 7 days after weaning (-6.9%), WFSI (+0.8 days), NPDs (+6.9 days) and sow culling rate (+7.2%) were significantly different between the 1-year pre-PEDV outbreak period and the post-PEDV outbreak period. Impacts of the PEDV infection on the reproductive performance were more severe in pregnant gilts than in sows. In conclusion, these findings indicate that the outbreak of PEDV caused an increase in the rate of NPDs in breeding herds.  相似文献

In sows, n-3 fatty acids increase litter sizes, however, effects on gilt reproductive development have not been adequately studied. Moreover, not determined are effects of feeding n-3 fatty acids to sows on reproduction in offspring. The objective here was to determine effects of 4% dietary menhaden oil on growth and puberty in gilts farrowed by sows fed menhaden oil. Sows (n = 44) were assigned to: (1) control gestation and lactation diets, or (2) diets including menhaden oil. For primiparous sows only, total litter size and born alive were greater (P < 0.05) in females fed menhaden oil. Conversely, pigs from primiparous controls were heavier (P < 0.05) than pigs from primiparous sows fed menhaden oil (parity by diet interactions, P < 0.01). Diet did not affect (P > 0.20) other sow and litter characteristics. At weaning, 84 gilts from control- or menhaden oil sows were placed three gilts per pen and provided control diets or diets containing menhaden oil. Nursery and grow-finish feed intake and feed efficiency were similar (P > 0.21) for gilts from the different sows and weight gain was similar (P > 0.24) for gilts fed control or menhaden diets. Gilts fed menhaden oil tended to eat less in the nursery (1.18±0.08 kg v. 0.98±0.08 kg; P = 0.09) and overall (1.83±0.04 kg v. 1.72±0.04 kg; P = 0.06). Thus, overall feed to gain was greater (2.52±0.03 v. 2.33±0.03; P < 0.01) and nursery (2.12±0.04 v. 1.80±0.04; P = 0.10) and grow-finish (3.07±0.19 v. 2.58±0.19; P = 0.08) feed to gain tended to be greater, for control gilts. Age at puberty was greater (P = 0.02) for gilts from menhaden oil-fed sows (205.1±3.2 days) compared to gilts from controls (193.9±3.2 days) and tended to be greater (P = 0.09), for controls (203.5±3.2 days) compared to gilts fed menhaden oil (195.5±3.2 days). A tendency existed (P = 0.09) for greater follicular fluid in gilts fed menhaden oil, however, ovulation rate and ovarian, luteal and uterine weights were not affected by sow diet, gilt diet or the interaction (P > 0.23). Feeding gilts menhaden oil enhanced feed efficiency and hastened puberty onset. Gilts from sows consuming menhaden oil exhibited delayed puberty and retaining females from sows fed this feedstuff may be ill advised.  相似文献

There is a comprehensive body of literature on how increased air temperature affects the physiology, production and behaviour of sows, while very few studies consider the thermal effects of air humidity and air velocity. This review summarises studies that have investigated effects of air temperature by reviewing published literature in which sows were exposed to at least two different levels of air temperature ranging from 15 °C to 39 °C. Increased rectal temperature was investigated in the majority of the studies (26) and on average, the rectal temperature increased by 0.099 °C per °C increased air temperature above 25 °C. The increase was smaller at lower air temperatures, and it was suggested that rectal temperature is practically unaffected by air temperatures in the range of 15 °C–21 °C. This review elucidates how air temperature also affects performance indicators such as respiration rate, vaginal temperature, skin temperature, feed intake, milk yield, body weight loss during lactation, mortality, litter daily weight gain during lactation and sow behaviour. One study reported how respiration rate, rectal temperature, vaginal temperature and skin temperature were affected by both air temperature and air humidity, and the results suggest that the relative significance of air temperature and humidity may be similar for sows and finishing pigs (e.g. an increase of 40% relative humidity at an air temperature of 30 °C has a similar effect as a 1.9 °C increase in temperature).Studies on mitigation methods against the effects of high temperature and humidity such as snout cooling, drip cooling and floor cooling were reviewed to extract knowledge related to the effects of air velocity, temperatures of surrounding surfaces and the opportunity for sows to moisten their skin.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to analyze the relative roles of high temperature and photoperiod as environmental factors of seasonal infertility in swine. The results of five years (2003-2007) of ultrasound pregnancy diagnosis carried out in 266 indoor farms were analyzed. For all farms, the data covered the entire study period. The farms were situated in four French regions. The data of 22,773 batches and 610,117 sows were included. Seasonal infertility was defined as the relative difference between the fertility rate in ‘summer’ (inseminations in weeks 25-42) and ‘winter’ (inseminations in weeks 1-18 of the same year). In each region, two meteorological variables were defined, based on the data of a reference weather station: the number of hot days (maximum temperature ≥ 25 °C) and tropical days (maximum temperature ≥ 32 °C and minimum temperature ≥ 18 °C). The mean fertility was 85%. The median seasonal infertility was 2.8% and more than 7.1% for a quarter of farms. Seasonal infertility did not vary with areas or baseline fertility (defined for each studied farm as the average winter fertility over five years). Seasonal infertility differed with the year (p < 0.001). Seasonal infertility was significantly higher during 2003 than in the other four years, which did not differ among each other. In the four regions, 2003 was the year with the highest number of hot days and 2007 with the least. Our study strengthens the hypothesis of a prominent role of photoperiod in seasonal infertility and of an additional role of heat stress the hottest years.  相似文献

At present, it is possible to transfer pig embryos directly into the uterine body of sows by nonsurgical procedures. The aim of this study was to develop a procedure for nonsurgical embryo transfer (ET) into the upper part of one uterine horn in gilts and sows. In experiment 1, 29 gilts and 43 sows were used. Intrauterine insertions took place for each female at days 4-6 of the estrous cycle (D0 = onset of estrus). An artificial insemination (AI) spirette was inserted into the cervix to assist with the guidance of a modified flexible catheter originally developed for deep intrauterine insemination in pigs. The flexible catheter length inserted anterior to the inserted AI spirette was 43.0 +/- 1.7 cm. The time required to complete the procedure was affected by the type of female (P < 0.001) and by the difficulties encountered for inserting the catheter (P < 0.001). However, when no or minor difficulties were encountered during the insertion of the catheter (in approximately 70 and 80% of gilts and sows, respectively), the time required to complete the procedure did not differ between gilts (2.5 +/- 0.1 min) and sows (2.3 +/- 0.1 min). In experiment 2, 24 to 31 fresh morulae and/or blastocysts were transferred to each of 24 recipients. Seventeen animals (70.8%) farrowed an average of 6.9 +/- 0.7 piglets, of which 0.6 +/- 0.3 piglets were born dead. In conclusion, the procedure described in this study offers new possibilities to transfer embryos nonsurgically to the uterine horn of pigs.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the preserving capacity of a commercial, long-term boar semen extender beyond 4 days in terms of farrowing failure and total born per litter in sows and gilts. Data from 21 farms were subjected to logistic and linear regression analyses to assess the effect of parity (2-5, > 5 and gilts), wean-to-service interval (/= 6 days) and number of AI (1, 2, or 3) on the association between semen age (/=10 days) and fertility. As the semen age increased, the likelihood of farrowing failure increased and total born per litter decreased in sows and gilts. The effect of semen ageing on farrowing failure was more pronounced in sows than in gilts as in the latter it became significant only after 8 days. The effect of semen ageing on total born per litter was similar in both sows and gilts. A lower parity and wean-to-service interval were associated with a reduction in farrowing failure and increase in total born per litter in sows. Increasing the number of inseminations up to two was beneficial in reducing farrowing failure in sows and gilts. A third insemination increased the likelihood of farrowing failure in sows. The number of total born per litter in sows increased with number of inseminations and the effect was not significant in gilts.  相似文献

The data presented here represent a retrospective analysis of information gathered while collecting data for other studies on miniature pigs. Two different breeds of miniature pigs, NIH and Sinclair, were used in this study. The NIH females were gilts, while Sinclair females included both gilts and sows. The pigs were checked twice a day for estrus and were mated at 12 and 24 h after the onset of estrus. One- and 2-cell stage embryos were collected on Day 2; while 4-cell, 8-cell, compact morula and blastocyst stage embryos were collected on Days 2.7, 3.5, 4.3 and 6.0, respectively. The percentage of recovery of these embryos was dependent upon the surgeon (P = 0.002) and the stage of development (P = 0.018). The number of ovulations was higher (P < 0.04) in the Sinclair sows (10.4 +/- 0.60) than in the Sinclair gilts (8.9 +/- 0.67) and in the NIH gilts (8.3 +/- 0.67). When the NIH gilts were divided into swine leukocyte antigen (SLA) haplotypes, it was found that SLA(dd) gilts (8.5 +/- 0.43) had more ovulations (P = 0.02) than SLA(ad) gilts (6.8 +/- 0.57). Some animals were treated with Regumate to synchronize estrus. The Sinclair gilts (7.8 +/- 0.28) and NIH gilts (7.7 +/- 0.27) took more days (P < 0.07) to show estrus than the Sinclair sows (6.3 +/- 0.58) after the removal of Regumate. Four of the animals had reproductive tract abnormalities; more specifically, a blind uterine horn or oviduct that was not patent with the other horn. All 4 were NIH gilts with the SLA(dd) haplotype.  相似文献

Due to their functional similarity to estradiol, phytoestrogens could prove to be beneficial in late gestating sows. The goal of this study was to determine the impact of providing the phytoestrogen genistein during late pregnancy on the performance of sows and their litters. In total, 56 gilts were equally divided into the two following groups on day 90 of gestation: (1) controls (CTL); and (2) two daily i.m. injections of 220 mg of genistein (GEN). Treatments were carried out until farrowing. Jugular blood samples were collected from 16 gilts/treatment on days 89 and 110 of gestation, and on days 3 and 21 of lactation. Milk samples were also obtained from those sows on day 3 of lactation. A male piglet from 16 CTL and 15 GEN litters was slaughtered at 24 h postpartum and a blood sample was obtained. The liver, heart and visceral organs were weighed and the semitendinosus (ST) muscle was collected and carcass composition was determined. The treatment increased (P<0.05) the concentrations of genistein and daidzein in the plasma of gilts on day 110 of gestation and of genistein in the plasma of piglets at 24 h postpartum. It also increased IGF1 concentrations in gilts at the end of the treatment period (P<0.05). Genistein had no impact (P>0.1) on weight or backfat loss of sows during lactation, milk composition or weights of piglets. The pre-weaning mortality rate of piglets was very low (<7%), yet the odds ratio comparing CTL with GEN sows indicated almost twice as many chances of pre-weaning deaths occurring in litters from CTL than GEN sows. Weights of the piglet carcasses were similar for both treatments, as well as weights of the various organs and of the ST muscle (P>0.1). However, carcasses from GEN litters contained more fat than those from CTL litters (9.63% v. 8.34%, P<0.05). None of the biochemical properties of the ST muscle differed between groups (P>0.1). In conclusion, injecting gilts with 440 mg/day of genistein in late gestation increased IGF1 concentrations in gilts and carcass fat in neonatal piglets, but had minimal effect on muscle development of piglets at birth and on the performance of lactating sows and their litters.  相似文献
