The relationship between bacterial respiratory quinone (RQ) concentration and biomass was assessed for Lake Biwa bacterial assemblages to evaluate the utility of bacterial RQ concentration as an indicator of bacterial carbon. The biomass estimated from the RQ concentration correlated well with that from cell volume, indicating that RQ concentration is an appropriate indicator of bacterial biomass. The estimated carbon content per unit of RQ (carbon conversion factor) of bacteria was 0.67 mg C nmol RQ?1. Bacterial carbon biomass, which was estimated from the RQ concentration using the conversion factor, ranged between 0.008 and 0.054 mg C L?1 (average 0.025 mg C L?1) at 5 m depth and between 0.010 and 0.024 mg C L?1 (average 0.015 mg C L?1) at 70 m depth. Ubiquinone-8-containing bacteria dominated the epilimnion and hypolimnion. Compared to conventional image analysis, bacterial RQ analysis is a less laborious method of simultaneously determining bacterial biomass and community.  相似文献

The Red River, draining a 169,000 km2 watershed, is the second largest river in Viet Nam and constitutes the main source of water for a large percentage of the population of North Viet Nam. Here we present the results of an investigation into the spatial distribution and temporal dynamics of particulate and dissolved organic carbon (POC and DOC, respectively) in the Red River Basin. POC concentrations ranged from 0.24 to 5.80 mg C L?1 and DOC concentrations ranged from 0.26 to 5.39 mg C L?1. The application of the Seneque/Riverstrahler model to monthly POC and DOC measurements showed that, in general, the model simulations of the temporal variations and spatial distribution of organic carbon (OC) concentration followed the observed trends. They also show the impact of high population densities (up to 994 inhab km?2 in the delta area) on OC inputs in surface runoff from the different land use classes and from urban point sources. A budget of the main fluxes of OC in the whole river network, including diffuse inputs from soil leaching and runoff and point sources from urban centers, as well as algal net primary production and heterotrophic respiration was established using the model results. It shows the predominantly heterotrophic character of the river system and provides an estimate of CO2 emissions from the river of 330 Gg C year?1. This value is in reasonable agreement with the few available direct measurements of CO2 fluxes in the downstream part of the river network.  相似文献

Knowledge on the relative effects of biological activity and precipitation/dissolution of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in influencing the air-ice CO2 exchange in sea-ice-covered season is currently lacking. Furthermore, the spatial and temporal occurrence of CaCO3 and other biogeochemical parameters in sea ice are still not well described. Here we investigated autotrophic and heterotrophic activity as well as the precipitation/dissolution of CaCO3 in subarctic sea ice in South West Greenland. Integrated over the entire ice season (71 days), the sea ice was net autotrophic with a net carbon fixation of 56 mg C m?2, derived from a sea-ice-related gross primary production of 153 mg C m?2 and a bacterial carbon demand of 97 mg C m?2. Primary production contributed only marginally to the TCO2 depletion of the sea ice (7–25 %), which was mainly controlled by physical export by brine drainage and CaCO3 precipitation. The net biological production could only explain 4 % of this sea-ice-driven CO2 uptake. Abiotic processes contributed to an air-sea CO2 uptake of 1.5 mmol m?2 sea ice day?1, and dissolution of CaCO3 increased the air-sea CO2 uptake by 36 % compared to a theoretical estimate of melting CaCO3-free sea ice. There was a considerable spatial and temporal variability of CaCO3 and the other biogeochemical parameters measured (dissolved organic and inorganic nutrients).  相似文献

Tropical peatlands are currently being rapidly cleared and drained for the establishment of oil palm plantations, which threatens their globally significant carbon sequestration capacity. Large-scale land conversion of tropical peatlands is important in the context of greenhouse gas emission factors and sustainable land management. At present, quantification of carbon dioxide losses from tropical peatlands is limited by our understanding of the relative contribution of heterotrophic and autotrophic respiration to net peat surface CO2 emissions. In this study we separated heterotrophic and autotrophic components of peat CO2 losses from two oil palm plantations (one established in ‘2000’ and the other in 1978, then replanted in ‘2006’) using chamber-based emissions sampling along a transect from the rooting to non-rooting zones on a peatland in Selangor, Peninsular Malaysia over the course of 3 months (June–August, 2014). Collar CO2 measurements were compared with soil temperature and moisture at site and also accompanied by depth profiles assessing peat C and bulk density. The soil respiration decreased exponentially with distance from the palm trunks with the sharpest decline found for the plantation with the younger palms with overall fluxes of 1341 and 988 mg CO2 m?2 h?1, respectively, at the 2000 and 2006 plantations, respectively. The mean heterotrophic flux was 909 ± SE 136 and 716 ± SE 201 mg m?2 h?1 at the 2000 and 2006 plantations, respectively. Autotrophic emissions adjacent to the palm trunks were 845 ± SE 135 and 1558 ± SE 341 mg m?2 h?1 at the 2000 and 2006 plantations, respectively. Heterotrophic CO2 flux was positively related to peat soil moisture, but not temperature. Total peat C stocks were 60 kg m?2 (down to 1 m depth) and did not vary among plantations of different ages but SOC concentrations declined significantly with depth at both plantations but the decline was sharper in the second generation 2006 plantation. The CO2 flux values reported in this study suggest a potential for very high carbon (C) loss from drained tropical peats during the dry season. This is particularly concerning given that more intense dry periods related to climate change are predicted for SE Asia. Taken together, this study highlights the need for careful management of tropical peatlands, and the vulnerability of their carbon storage capability under conditions of drainage.  相似文献

Current manufacturing of most bulk chemicals through petrochemical routes considerably contributes to common concerns over the depletion of fossil carbon sources and greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable future production of commodities thus requires the shift to renewable feedstocks in combination with established or newly developed synthesis routes. In this study, the potential of Cupriavidus necator H16 for autotrophic synthesis of the building block chemical 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid (2-HIBA) is evaluated. A novel biosynthetic pathway was implemented by heterologous expression of the 2-hydroxyisobutyryl-coenzyme A (2-HIB-CoA) mutase from Aquincola tertiaricarbonis L108, relying on a main intermediate of strain H16’s C4 overflow metabolism, 3-hydroxybutyryl-CoA. The intention was to direct the latter to 2-HIBA instead or in addition to poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB). Autotrophic growth and 2-HIBA (respectively, PHB) synthesis of wild-type and PHB-negative mutant strains were investigated producing maximum 2-HIBA titers of 3.2 g L?1 and maximum specific 2-HIBA synthesis rates (q 2-HIBA) of about 16 and 175 μmol g?1 h?1, respectively. The obtained specific productivity was the highest reported to date for mutase-dependent 2-HIBA synthesis from heterotrophic and autotrophic substrates. Furthermore, expression of a G protein chaperone (MeaH) in addition to the 2-HIB-CoA mutase subunits yielded improved productivity. Analyzing the inhibition of growth and product synthesis due to substrate availability and product accumulation revealed a strong influence of 2-HIBA, when cells were cultivated at high titers. Nevertheless, the presented results imply that at the time the autotrophic synthesis route is superior to thus far established heterotrophic routes for production of 2-HIBA with C. necator.  相似文献

Growth of Chlorella vulgaris and its lipid production were investigated under autotrophic, heterotrophic, and mixotrophic conditions. Cheap agricultural waste molasses and corn steep liquor from industries were used as carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. Chlorella vulgaris grew remarkably under this agricultural waste medium, which resulted in a reduction in the final cost of the biodiesel production. Maximum dry weight of 2.62 g L?1 was obtained in mixotrophic growth with the highest lipid concentration of 0.86 g L?1. These biomass and lipid concentrations were, respectively, 140% and 170% higher than autotrophic growth and 300% and 1200% higher than heterotrophic growth. In mixotrophic growth, independent or simultaneous occurrence of autotrophic and heterotrophic metabolisms was investigated. The growth of the microalgae was observed to take place first heterotrophically to a minimum substrate concentration with a little fraction in growth under autotrophic metabolism, and then the cells grew more autotrophically. It was found that mixotrophic growth was not a simple combination of heterotrophic and autotrophic growth.  相似文献

Three different approaches were used to calculate heterotrophic soil respiration (Rh) and soil carbon dynamics in an old-growth deciduous forest in central Germany. A root and mycorrhiza exclosure experiment in the field separated auto- and heterotrophic soil respiration. It was compared to modeled heterotrophic respiration resulting from two different approaches: a modular component model of soil respiration calculated autotrophic and heterotrophic soil respiration with litter, climate and canopy photosynthesis as input variables. It was calibrated by independent soil respiration measurements in the field. A second model was calibrated by incubation of soil samples from different soil layers in the laboratory. In this case, the annual sum of Rh was calculated by an empirical model including response curves to temperature and a soil moisture. The three approaches showed good accordance during spring and summer and when the annual sums of Rh calculated by the two models were compared. Average Rh for the years 2002–2006 were 436 g C m?2 year?1 (field model) and 417 g C m?2 year?1 (lab-model), respectively. Differences between the approaches revealed specific limitations of each method. The average carbon balance of the Hainich forest soil was estimated to be between 1 and 35 g C m?2 year?1 depending on the model used and the averaging period. A comparison with nighttime data from eddy covariance (EC) showed that EC data were lower than modelled soil respiration in many situations. We conclude that better filter methods for EC nighttime data have to be developed.  相似文献

Productivity, nutrient input, nutrient uptake, and release rates were determined for a coral-dominated reef flat at La Réunion, France, to assess the influence of groundwater nitrogen on carbon and nutrient budgets. Water samples were collected offshore in the ocean, at the reef crest and back reef for nutrients, picoplankton, pH, and total alkalinity. Volume transport of ocean water across the reef flat was measured using both current meters and drogues. Groundwater advected onto the reef flat and mixed with incoming ocean water. Metabolic rates for the reef community were determined to be: gross primary production = 1,000 mmol C m−2 d−1, community respiration = 960 mmol C m−2 d−1, and community calcification = 210 mmol C m−2 d−1. Across the reef flat, silicate behaved conservatively, there was net uptake of phosphate (0.06 mmol P m−2 d−1) and net release of nitrate, ammonia, dissolved and particulate organic nitrogen (total 7.0 mmol N m−2 d−1). Groundwater nitrate contributed 37% of the increase in nitrate plus ammonia. The first-order mass transfer coefficient of phosphate was 3.3 m d−1, and for nitrate plus ammonia, 5.9 m d−1. Gross N and P uptake from estimates of mass transfer and uptake of particles were 0.37 mmol P m−2 d−1 and 7.2 mmol N m−2 d−1, respectively giving an N:P uptake ratio of 20:1. Thus, the elevation of nitrogen across the reef flat maintains a high N:P flux, enhancing algal growth downstream of the transect. We conclude that net community production (40 mmol C m−2 d−1) was sustained by net uptake of phosphate from the ocean and net uptake of new nitrogen from groundwater.

Autochthonous production of potamoplankton has recently attracted greater interest as it was incorporated into expanded river concepts such as the flow pulse concept or the riverine productivity model (RPM). This review assembles data on primary production from the River Danube to evaluate the importance of productivity in large rivers. Results indicate positive net production in the middle reach of the river and in impoundments. These sections are characterised by favourable conditions for algal growth. Reduction in flow, reduced concentrations of suspended solids and improved under-water light result in significant increase in plankton biomass. Maximum chlorophyll concentrations were below 20 mg m?3 in 2007 but concentrations up to 130 mg m?3 have been recorded in the past. Since nutrients are not limiting, as in most large rivers, net primary production is largely controlled by availability of photosynthetic active radiation under water, chlorophyll-a, water depth and discharge. Hourly carbon uptake rates of 3–130 mg C m?3 h?1 observed in the Danube are well within the range of 0–790 mg C m?3 h?1 for large rivers of the world. Autochthonous autotrophic production must be regarded as an important feature of large rivers supporting the RPM concept.  相似文献

The amounts, sources and relative ages of inorganic and organic carbon pools were assessed in eight headwater streams draining watersheds dominated by either forest, pasture, cropland or urban development in the lower Chesapeake Bay region (Virginia, USA). Streams were sampled at baseflow conditions six different times over 1 year. The sources and ages of the carbon pools were characterized by isotopic (δ13C and ?14C) analyses and excitation emission matrix fluorescence with parallel factor analysis (EEM–PARAFAC). The findings from this study showed that human land use may alter aquatic carbon cycling in three primary ways. First, human land use affects the sources and ages of DIC by controlling different rates of weathering and erosion. Relative to dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in forested streams which originated primarily from respiration of young, 14C-enriched organic matter (OM; δ13C = ?22.2 ± 3 ‰; ?14C = 69 ± 14 ‰), DIC in urbanized streams was influenced more by sedimentary carbonate weathering (δ13C = ?12.4 ± 1 ‰; ?14C = ?270 ± 37 ‰) and one of pasture streams showed a greater influence from young soil carbonates (δ13C = ?5.7 ± 2.5 ‰; ?14C = 69 ‰). Second, human land use alters the proportions of terrestrial versus autochthonous/microbial sources of stream water OM. Fluorescence properties of dissolved OM (DOM) and the C:N of particulate OM (POM) suggested that streams draining human-altered watersheds contained greater relative contributions of DOM and POM from autochthonous/microbial sources than forested streams. Third, human land uses can mobilize geologically aged inorganic carbon and enable its participation in contemporary carbon cycling. Aged DOM (?14C = ?248 to ?202 ‰, equivalent14C ages of 1,811–2,284 years BP) and POM (?14C = ?90 to ?88 ‰, 14C ages of 669–887 years BP) were observed exclusively in urbanized streams, presumably a result of autotrophic fixation of aged DIC (?297 to ?244 ‰, 14C age = 2,251–2,833 years BP) from sedimentary shell dissolution and perhaps also watershed export of fossil fuel carbon. This study demonstrates that human land use may have significant impacts on the amounts, sources, ages and cycling of carbon in headwater streams and their associated watersheds.  相似文献

An effort has been made for the first time in Asia's largest brackish water lagoon, Chilika, to investigate the spatio-temporal variability in primary productivity (PP), bacterial productivity (BP), bacterial abundance (BA), bacterial respiration (BR) and bacterial growth efficiency (BGE) in relation to partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) and CO2 air–water flux and the resultant trophic switchover. Annually, PP ranged between 24 and 376 µg C L?1 d?1 with significantly low values throughout the monsoon (MN), caused by light limitation due to inputs of riverine suspended matter. On the contrary, BP and BR ranged from 11.5 to 186.3 µg C L?1 d?1 and from 14.1 to 389.4 µg C L?1 d?1, respectively, with exceptionally higher values during MN. A wide spatial and temporal variation in the lagoon trophic status was apparent from BP/PP (0.05–6.4) and PP/BR (0.10–18.2) ratios. The seasonal shift in net pelagic production from autotrophy to heterotrophy due to terrestrial organic matter inputs via rivers, enhanced the bacterial metabolism during the MN, as evident from the high pCO2 (10,134 µatm) and CO2 air–water flux (714 mm m?2 d?1). Large variability in BGE and BP/PP ratios especially during MN led to high bacteria-mediated carbon fluxes which was evident from significantly high bacterial carbon demand (BCD >100% of PP) during this season. This suggested that the net amount of organic carbon (either dissolved or particulate form) synthesized by primary producers in the lagoon was not sufficient to satisfy the bacterial carbon requirements. Lagoon sustained low to moderate autotrophic–heterotrophic coupling with annual mean BCD of 231% relative to the primary production, which depicted that bacterioplankton are the mainstay of the lagoon biogeochemical cycles and principal players that bring changes in trophic status. Study disclosed that the high CO2 supersaturation and oxygen undersaturation during MN was attributed to the increased heterotrophic respiration (in excess of PP) fuelled by allochthonous organic matter. On a spatial scale, lagoon sectors such as south sector, central sector and outer channel recorded “net autotrophic,” while the northern sector showed “net heterotrophic” throughout the study period.  相似文献

The vertical distributions of bacteria and algae in a steeply stratified, highly humic lake were studied during three 24 h periods in summer. The highest bacterial and algal densities and biomasses were recorded in the anoxic hypolimnion. The bacterial biomass in the hypolimnion was composed mainly of photosynthetic green sulphur bacteria (Chlorobium) which occurred at very low light intensity (< 1.5 μmol m−2 s−1). The numbers and biomasses of bacteria, both in the epilimnion and hypolimnion, were mostly higher at night than during the day, indicating possible asynchrony between the production and loss of bacteria. Because of vertical migration, the diurnal vertical distribution of algae was more variable than that of bacteria. Particularly in July and August, when cryptomonads were abundant, the biomass of algae was much higher in the epilimnion during the day than at night. The flagellated chlorophytes, Chlamydomonas spp. and Scourfieldia cordiformis, stayed mainly in the upper hypolimnion close to the oxic-anoxic boundary zone where only a small proportion of Daphnia longispina was continuously present. Unpalatable Mallomonas chrysophytes with silicified plates and bristles, and small, presumably heterotrophic, flagellates stayed in the oxic epilimnion together with a dense (up to 300 ind l−1) population of D. longispina. The results indicated that, besides the physical and chemical properties of the water column, grazing pressure by Daphnia longispina strongly affected the vertical distribution of microorganisms in this polyhumic lake.  相似文献

Biometric-based carbon flux measurements were conducted in a pine forest on lava flow of Mt. Fuji, Japan, in order to estimate carbon cycling and sequestration. The forest consists mainly of Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora) in a canopy layer and Japanese holly (Ilex pedunculosa) in a subtree layer. The lava remains exposed on the ground surface, and the soil on the lava flow is still immature with no mineral soil layer. The results showed that the net primary production (NPP) of the forest was 7.3 ± 0.7 t C ha?1 year?1, of which 1.4 ± 0.4 t C ha?1 year?1 was partitioned to biomass increment, 3.2 ± 0.5 t C ha?1 year?1 to above-ground fine litter production, 1.9 t C ha?1 year?1 to fine root production, and 0.8 ± 0.2 t C ha?1 year?1 to coarse woody debris. The total amount of annual soil surface CO2 efflux was estimated as 6.1 ± 2.9 t C ha?1 year?1, using a closed chamber method. The estimated decomposition rate of soil organic matter, which subtracted annual root respiration from soil respiration, was 4.2 ± 3.1 t C ha?1 year?1. Biometric-based net ecosystem production (NEP) in the pine forest was estimated at 2.9 ± 3.2 t C ha?1 year?1, with high uncertainty due mainly to the model estimation error of annual soil respiration and root respiration. The sequestered carbon being allocated in roughly equal amounts to living biomass (1.4 t C ha?1 year?1) and the non-living C pool (1.5 t C ha?1 year?1). Our estimate of biometric-based NEP was 25 % lower than the eddy covariance-based NEP in this pine forest, due partly to the underestimation of NPP and difficulty of estimation of soil and root respiration in the pine forest on lava flows that have large heterogeneity of soil depth. However, our results indicate that the mature pine forest acted as a significant carbon sink even when established on lava flow with low nutrient content in immature soils, and that sequestration strength, both in biomass and in soil organic matter, is large.  相似文献

Although lakes play a major role in the storage of organic carbon, processes involved are not yet very well characterized, especially for oligotrophic lakes. Whether a lake functions as a net source or sink for carbon depends on relative rates of primary production, inputs of terrestrial organic matter and respiration. The microbial community will affect the efficiency of carbon cycling and thereby potential carbon storage. Because the organic matter fluxes are smaller in oligotrophic lakes they have been studied less intensively with respect to their carbon cycling compared to eutrophic lakes. Whether they play an appreciable role in freshwater carbon cycling relies on unraveling primary and secondary production. Here we present the results from such a study in oligotrophic Lake Lucerne, Switzerland. Based on in situ carbon isotopic labelling experiments using dark, glucose-labelled and transparent, DIC-labelled bottles positioned at different depths in the water column, we conclude that even though the photic zone was very deep, integrated primary productivity was consistently low. The carbon processing efficiency of the heterotrophic producers was such that photosynthesized organic matter was fully consumed, even during times of maximum productivity. This implies that the heterotrophic producers were well adapted to rapidly respond to a temporary increase in primary productivity, which is in line with calculated bacterial growth efficiencies in the surface water layer. Highest glucose-based productivity, as a measure of the heterotrophic potential, was observed in the deepest parts of the water column. Chemoautotrophy was shown at 60 m water depth and is of relatively minor importance for overall fluxes. Mixotrophy was recognized as a strategy to keep up production when light conditions become less favorable for autotrophic growth. A mesocosm experiment earlier in the year indicated lower primary production, which agrees well with the timing of this experiment preceding the annual spring bloom. During the low-productivity season the coupling between phytoplankton and bacterial production was much weaker and potentially more organic matter could escape recycling at that time, although quantitatively fluxes remained very low.  相似文献

Natural rubber is a valuable source of income in many tropical countries and rubber trees are increasingly planted in tropical areas, where they contribute to land-use changes that impact the global carbon cycle. However, little is known about the carbon balance of these plantations. We studied the soil carbon balance of a 15-year-old rubber plantation in Thailand and we specifically explored the seasonal dynamic of soil CO2 efflux (F S) in relation to seasonal changes in soil water content (W S) and soil temperature (T S), assessed the partitioning of F S between autotrophic (R A) and heterotrophic (R H) sources in a root trenching experiment and estimated the contribution of aboveground and belowground carbon inputs to the soil carbon budget. A multiplicative model combining both T S and W S explained 58 % of the seasonal variation of F S. Annual soil CO2 efflux averaged 1.88 kg C m?2 year?1 between May 2009 and April 2011 and R A and R H accounted for respectively 63 and 37 % of F S, after corrections of F S measured on trenched plots for root decomposition and for difference in soil water content. The 4-year average annual aboveground litterfall was 0.53 kg C m?2 year?1 while a conservative estimate of belowground carbon input into the soil was much lower (0.17 kg C m?2 year?1). Our results highlighted that belowground processes (root and rhizomicrobial respiration and the heterotrophic respiration related to belowground carbon input into the soil) have a larger contribution to soil CO2 efflux (72 %) than aboveground litter decomposition.  相似文献

We investigate the carbon dynamics in Guanabara Bay, an eutrophic tropical coastal embayment surrounded by the megacity of Rio de Janeiro (southeast coast of Brazil). Nine sampling campaigns were conducted for dissolved, particulate and total organic carbon (DOC, POC and TOC), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), chlorophyll a (Chl a), pheo-pigments and ancillary parameters. Highest DOC, POC and Chl a concentrations were found in confined-shallow regions of the bay during the summer period with strong pCO2 undersaturation, and DOC reached 82 mg L?1, POC 152 mg L?1, and Chl a 800 μg L?1. Spatially and temporally, POC and DOC concentrations varied positively with total pigments, and negatively with DIC. Strong linear correlations between these parameters indicate that the production of TOC translates to an equivalent uptake in DIC, with 85% of the POC and about 50% of the DOC being of phytoplanktonic origin. Despite the shallow depths of the bay, surface waters were enriched in POC and DOC relative to bottom waters in periods of high thermohaline stratification. The seasonal accumulation of phytoplankton-derived TOC in the surface waters reached about 105 g C m?2 year?1, representing between 8 and 40% of the net primary production. The calculated turnover time of organic carbon was 117 and 34 days during winter and summer, respectively. Our results indicate that eutrophication of coastal bays in the tropics can generate large stocks of planktonic biomass and detrital organic carbon which are permanently being produced and partially degraded and buried in sediments.  相似文献

The growth and total lipid content of four green microalgae (Chlorella sp., Chlorella vulgaris CCAP211/11B, Botryococcus braunii FC124 and Scenedesmus obliquus R8) were investigated under different culture conditions. Among the various carbon sources tested, glucose produced the largest biomass or microalgae grown heterotrophically. It was found that 1 % (w/v) glucose was actively utilized by Chlorella sp., C. vulgaris CCAP211/11B and B. braunii FC124, whereas S. obliquus R8 preferred 2 % (w/v) glucose. No significant difference in biomass production was noted between heterotrophic and mixotrophic (heterotrophic with light illumination/exposure) growth conditions, however, less production was observed for autotrophic cultivation. Total lipid content in cells increased by approximately two-fold under mixotrophic cultivation with respect to heterotrophic and autotrophic cultivation. In addition, light intensity had an impact on microalgal growth and total lipid content. The highest total lipid content was observed at 100 μmol m?2s?1 for Chlorella sp. (22.5 %) and S. obliquus R8 (23.7 %) and 80 μmol m?2s?1 for C. vulgaris CCAP211/11B (20.1 %) and B. braunii FC124 (34.9 %).  相似文献

Tropical papyrus wetlands have the ability to assimilate and sequester significant amounts of carbon. However, the spatial extent, productivity and carbon sink strength associated with papyrus wetlands remains poorly characterised. The objective of this study was to collate information from peer-reviewed publications and relevant government and NGO reports to better understand carbon dynamics within papyrus dominated wetlands, and to assess the processes that regulate the magnitude of the carbon sink. Papyrus wetlands were shown to exhibit high rates of photosynthetic carbon dioxide (CO2) assimilation of up to 40 μmol CO2 m?2 s?1 where the incident photosynthetic photon flux density was ≥1,000 μmol m?2 s?1, high rates of net primary production ranging between 14 and 52 g DM m?2 d?1 and represent a significant carbon sink where up to 88 t C ha?1 is stored in the aboveground and belowground components of the papyrus vegetation. Under flooded conditions significant detrital and peat deposits accumulate in excess of 1 m in depth, representing an additional carbon store in the order of 640 t C ha?1. This study also highlighted the lack of empirical data on emissions of other radiatively important trace gases such as methane and nitrous oxide and also the vulnerability of these carbon sinks to both future changes in climate, in particular periods of hydrological drawdown, and anthropogenic land use change where the papyrus vegetation is removed in favour of subsistence agricultural cropping systems.  相似文献

The effects of organic enrichment on sediment biogeochemistry was studied in diffusion controlled sediment mesocosms, where labile organic matter (OM) (fish feed) pulses were added once a week to the sediment surface. Two types of sediments, differing mainly in content of reactive Fe, were used. The aim of this experiment was two-fold, (1) to evaluate the importance of Fe-driven sulfide buffering for sulfide accumulation in surface enriched sediments, and (2) to estimate the diagenetic capacity for degradation of labile OM near the sediment surface. The simulated OM loading rate of 375 mmol C m?2 day?1 led to a 5–6 times increase in CO2-production and a 4–5 times increase in O2-uptake. Sulfate reduction estimated by radiotracer experiments and CO2-release was 105–131 mmol m?2 day?1, but accumulation of porewater sulfide was low in both sediment types. Instead 99% of sulfide was oxidized with O2 at the sediment water interface in the low Fe treatment, whereas 46% of produced sulfide precipitated as Fe-S compound in the high Fe treatment resulting in significantly lower O2-uptake. Furthermore, the accumulation of up to 30% of added OM by the end of the experiment indicated a saturation of the heterotrophic microbial communities in the upper enriched surface layer. These results suggest a maximum diagenetic capacity for OM degradation in the range of ~25 μmol C cm?3 day?1 or 260 mmol m?2 day?1 for the present sediment types.  相似文献

Vernal pools are small, seasonal wetlands that are a common landscape feature contributing to biodiversity in northeastern North American forests. Basic information about their biogeochemical functions, such as carbon cycling, is limited. Concentrations of dissolved methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) and other water chemistry parameters were monitored weekly at the bottom and surface of four vernal pools in central and eastern Maine, USA, from April to August 2016. The vernal pools were supersaturated with respect to CH4 and CO2 at all sampling dates and locations. Concentrations of dissolved CH4 and CO2 ranged from 0.4 to 210 μmol L?1 and 72–2300 μmol L?1, respectively. Diffusive fluxes of CH4 and CO2 into the atmosphere ranged from 0.2 to 73 mmol m?2 d?1, and 30–590 mmol m?2 d?1, respectively. During the study period, the four vernal pools emitted 0.1–5.8 kg C m?2 and 9.6–120 kg C m?2 as CH4 and CO2, respectively. The production fluxes (production rates normalized to surface area) of CH4 and CO2 ranged from ? 0.02 to 0.66 and 0.40–4.6 g C m?2 d?1, respectively, and increased significantly over the season. Methane concentrations were best predicted by alkalinity, ortho-phosphate and depth, while CO2 concentrations were best predicted with only alkalinity. Alkalinity as a predictor variable highlights the importance of anaerobic respiration in production of both gases. Our study pools had large concentrations and effluxes of CH4 and CO2 compared to permanently inundated wetlands, indicating vernal pools are metabolically active sites and may be important contributors to the global carbon budget.  相似文献
