During the crown-building phase, the mechanical architecture of the trunk of Aralia spinosa exhibits considerable ontogenetic variation. All trunks were tapered along their length, and taper was dependent on both ramet size and age; older, larger trunks were more tapered than younger, smaller trunks. Trunk specific gravity, % bark, wood, and pith exhibited considerable inter- and intra-ramet variation. Specific gravity increased with both increasing ramet size and age, and declined acropetally in the majority of ramets sampled. Wood specific gravity was generally unrelated to ramet size, age, or position along the length of the trunk. Percent wood increased while % pith decreased with increasing ramet size and age. There was no relationship between % bark and either ramet size or age. Both % bark and % wood tended to decline acropetally, while % pith increased acropetally. On average, 47% of the variation in specific gravity could be attributed to % wood, while 77% could be attributed to % pith. Percent bark accounted for only 14% of the variation in specific gravity. We suggest that the relatively pithy trunk of Aralia spinosa (average range: 4-15%) allows for rapid height growth, but imposes severe constraints on crown architecture and the maximum size attainable by this species.  相似文献

Cycas panzhihuaensis L. Zhou et S. Y. Yang is a rare and endangered Cycad that grows in dry-hot valley of Jinsha River. The biological properties, trunk anatomy and growth patterns were studied by field investigation and location observation. The results showed as follows: The sex ratio of cones was strongly male based on reproductive episode. There were no significant sexual differences in leaf number, leaf size, trunk size and ramet number. More than 70% of the adult plants produce ramets, with a mean number of ramets per adult plant of about 2.8. The proportion of individuals with ramets and the number of ramets was positively correlated with trunk height. Maximum mean trunk diameter and mean number of leaves were reached when the plant reached 30--40 cm tall. Further increase of leaf width ceased when the plant reached 5 years old. Leaf reached its maximum length when the trunk was 10 cm tall. Growth units of trunk showed a linear relationship with height. The estimated age could be obtained by counting growth units of the trunk. The survival curve of leaves was well described by Deevey type Ⅰ . The survival time of many leaves was two growth units. The rate of leaf mortality abruptly increased after two growth units. Few leaves could survive five units.  相似文献

The allometry of tree height with respect to trunk diameterand the allometry of trunk diameter with respect to distancefrom the top of the tree (i.e. trunk taper) were determinedfor 27 Robinia pseudoacacia trees differing in age and sizegrowing in an open field. The allometric (scaling) exponentfor height was > 1 for small and young trees and decreasedto 2/3 and then 1/2 as tree size and age increased. Similarly,the exponent for taper was > 1 near the tips of young andold trunks and converged onto values of 2/3 and 1/2 toward thebase of mature tree trunks. These observations indicate thata single 'optimal mechanical design principle' (i.e. elastic,stress or geometric self-similarity) neither holds true throughoutthe lifetime of R. pseudoacacia trees, nor does a single designprinciple govern the taper of a trunk throughout its entirelength. Rather, over the course of growth and development, theallometry of R. pseudoacacia tree height and trunk taper progressivelychanges, complying with geometric self-similarity for youngplants (and young portions of old plants) and subsequently givingthe appearance of elastic or stress self-similarity as plants(or portions of plants) get older and therefore larger. Measurements of 48 males and 45 females of Three-toed Woodpeckers shot in Norway revealed that the mean lengths of wing, tail, bill and tarsus of males were significantly greater than those of females. Sexual dimorphism was most marked for the bill and tarsus.
Feeding observations of the species from spruce-dominated mixed forests during the October-March period indicated an intersexual partitioning of the foraging niche. The males exhibited a stereotyped foraging pattern of bark scaling low down on the main trunks of dead spruce, whilst females used a more differentiated feeding technique and utilized a greater variety of trunk and branch sizes of dead, decaying and living trees of several different species. Significant intersexual differences were found in tree height preference and in the diameter of trunks and branches. The males foraged almost exclusively on the trunks of trees over 10 m high and over 15 cm in diameter, whilst females often frequented dead spruce, under 5 m high, and foraged on thinner trunks and branches. Foraging height was significantly lower for males than for females.
The relationship between the sexual dimorphism, the intersexual partitioning of the feeding niche and their biological significance, is briefly discussed.  相似文献

We calculated the wind-induced bending moments and stresses generated in the stems of five Prunus serotina conspecifics differing in height and canopy shape and size (based on detailed measurements of stem projected area and location with respect to ground level) to test the hypothesis that wind-loads generate uniform and constant stress levels along the lengths of tree twigs, branches, and trunks. These calculations were performed using five different wind speed profiles to evaluate the relative importance of the shape of wind speed profiles versus the ’geometry’ of tree shape on stem stress distributions and magnitudes. Additionally, we evaluated the effect of absolute tree size and stem taper on wind- induced stresses by scaling the size of smaller conspecifics to the absolute height of the largest of the five trees yet retaining the original stem proportions (i.e., diameter relative to stem length) for each plant. Finally, we also determined how the factor of safety for wind-loading (i.e., the quotient of stem yield stress and wind-load stress) changed as a function of tree size (and, presumably, age). Our results indicate that wind-load stress levels (1) vary along stem length even for the same wind speed profile and the same maximum wind speed; (2) would increase to dangerous levels with increasing tree height if it were not for ontogenetic changes in stem taper and canopy shape that reduce stress intensities to manageable levels; (3) tend to be more dependent on stem taper and canopy shape and size than on the shape of the wind speed profile; and (4) the factor of safety against wind-induced mechanical failure decreases as trees get larger, but varies along the length of large trees such that preferential stem failure is likely and functionally adaptive. We thus (1) reject the hypothesis of constant wind-induced stress levels; (2) support the view that size-dependent changes in stem taper are required to maintain wind-load mechanical reliability; and (3) suggest that certain portions of mature trees are ’designed’ to fail under high winds speeds, thereby reducing drag and the bending moments and stresses experienced by trunks. Leaves of Gleditsia triacanthos L. are served by three leaf traces that subdivide in the node to produce subsidiary bundles. The subsidiary bundles differentiate basipetally in the stem and acropetally in the petiole using the original leaf trace bundles (those that developed acropetally) as templates for their development. Within the pulvinus, the acropetal bundle components merge to form the rachis vasculature consisting of a semicircular arc and a ventral chord; several small bundles diverge to form ventral ridge bundles. Mixing of bundles occurs during vascularization of the lateral rachillae axes. Each diverging rachilla axis receives bundles from the semicircular arc, the ventral chord, and a ridge bundle in a relatively reproducible and predictable pattern. During this process the main rachis vasculature is gradually depleted, but the ridge bundles are reconstituted following divergence of each rachilla pair. The distal rachilla pair is vascularized by a bilateral partitioning of the entire rachis vasculature; a remnant of the central leaf trace terminates in a subulate terminal appendage. Vascularization of the bipinnate G. triacanthos leaf is compared to that of the simple Populus deltoides leaf.  相似文献

比较了不同调控措施对岷江上游辽东栎萌生灌丛生长与结实的影响.结果表明,人为调控对辽东栎萌生灌丛本生长阶段的高生长与有性繁殖有着显著影响.各调控措施对辽东栎灌丛萌生株的基径增长未产生明显影响;保留2支和3支萌生株的丛高生长优势明显.调控丛的新生枝数量、总长度、总生物量较未调控前有较大增加,保留2支萌生株的丛类型增加得尤为显著;叶片数量、叶片总生物量与未调控前相比增加明显,叶片面积按保留萌生株数量由多到少逐渐变小.调控后,每丛保留3支萌生株的丛产生的种子最多,但自然状态丛种子单粒重最大.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. An undescribed species of aseptate gregarine, for which the name Pterospora schizosoma is proposed, occurs in the coelom of the maldanid polychaete Axiothella rubrocincta (Johnson). The body of the mature gamont is divided into two cylindrical trunks, which are joined anteriorly. Posteriorly, each trunk bifurcates twice, thereby producing four terminal branches. The length of the entire organism varies from 230–600 μm. The organism actively pumps endoplasm from one trunk to the other, and the nucleus (average = 56.2 × 25.9 μm) moves with the flowing endoplasm. In all four of the previously described species, the gamont's main trunks arise from a substantial body mass whereas in P. schizosoma the trunks make up most of the body mass. Pterospora schizosoma's oocysts possess a distinct outer and inner capsule, which contains eight tightly appressed sporozoites.  相似文献

Xylem anatomy and water relations were studied in holly fern (Cyrtomium falcatum, Aspidiaceae) to determine the details of the pathway for water flow through an entire plant and the influence of tracheid number and lumen diameter on water flow. Each leaf has two adaxial traces and an abaxial trace, which are supplied by diarch adventitious roots attached to the dictyostele of the rhizome near the leaf base. Anatomical observations and dye experiments showed that each adaxial bundle vascularizes the approximately seven pinnae on its side of a leaf. An abaxial bundle is intermittently connected to an adaxial bundle as well as other abaxial bundles, forming a minor vascular pathway between the bundles of the leaf axis. Changes in both number and diameter of tracheids result in an acropetal decrease in hydraulic conductance per unit length along the rachis, although tracheid number locally increases when the trace for a pinna is produced in an adaxial bundle. Water flow was determined from the transpiration distal to the point in question or by forcing a solution through an axis with applied pressure. The water potential gradient along the plant axis was quite constant, indicating that hydraulic conductance per unit length varied with leaf area to be supplied. About 40% of the overall water potential drop occurred from the rachis into the pinnae, which reflected factors controlling water potential gradients in the lamina and not a very low conductance in the petiolule xylem. Hydraulic conductances calculated using the Hagen-Poiseuille equation and tracheid diameters were generally double those of measured conductances. Since the values tended to vary by a constant factor, tracheid number and diameter may largely control water flow in the xylem.  相似文献

West、Brown和Enquist提出的树木水分传导的分形网络模型(简称WBE模型)认为,树木连续分枝之间的导管或管胞直径按照一定的比率均匀变细,其总的水力阻力与水分传导的路径长度无关,从而使不同部位叶片获得基本相当的水分供应。该模型对树木高生长的水力限制假说提出了置疑。为了验证WBE模型中树木导管或管胞均匀变细的假说,该文研究了云南哀牢山中湿性常绿阔叶林中6种常绿阔叶树, 腾冲栲(Castanopsis wattii)、景东石砾(Lithocarpus chintungensis)、木果石砾(L. xylocarpus)、长尾青冈(Cyclobalanopsis stewardiana)、滇木荷(Schima noronhae)和舟柄茶(Hartia sinensis)木质部解剖特征随树高和年龄的变化。对这6个树种共14株样木进行了不同高度树干圆盘和边材生长轮取样,样木的高度为15~25 m,按照常规木材解剖的处理和分析方法,在显微镜下测定木材切片的导管直径和密度等特征。结果表明:在14株样木中,有4株树木导管直径随树木高度增加呈线性减小, 1株没有明显变化,其它9株树木导管直径在树冠以下的树干部分变化幅度较小或没有明显变化,而从树冠基部往上直到树木顶端导管直径显著减小。同一植株随着高度的增加,导管密度增加并且在树冠内增加更显著。有三分之一的树木导管占边材面积的比例随树高增加没有明显变化,其余树木导管占边材面积比在树冠以上有所减小。多数树木理论比导率在树冠以下没有明显变化而在树冠基部往上显著降低。在从髓芯开始往外的20~40个年轮范围内导管直径增加显著,但大部分植株导管直径在40个年轮后趋于稳定。不同高度圆盘导管直径随形成层发育时间的变化呈相似的趋势,并且相同发育年龄的导管直径没有明显差异。该文的研究结果说明,导管直径的轴向和径向变化一定程度上补偿了水分运输阻力随树木个体增大而增加的缺陷,但是6种常绿阔叶树树干的导管基本不按一定比率均匀变细,不支持WBE模型。  相似文献

A systematic evaluation of nonlinear mixed-effect taper models for volume prediction was performed. Of 21 taper equations with fewer than 5 parameters each, the best 4-parameter fixed-effect model according to fitting statistics was then modified by comparing its values for the parameters total height (H), diameter at breast height (DBH), and aboveground height (h) to modeling data. Seven alternative prediction strategies were compared using the best new equation in the absence of calibration data, which is often unavailable in forestry practice. The results of this study suggest that because calibration may sometimes be a realistic option, though it is rarely used in practical applications, one of the best strategies for improving the accuracy of volume prediction is the strategy with 7 calculated total heights of 3, 6 and 9 trees in the largest, smallest and medium-size categories, respectively. We cannot use the average trees or dominant trees for calculating the random parameter for further predictions. The method described here will allow the user to make the best choices of taper type and the best random-effect calculated strategy for each practical application and situation at tree level.  相似文献

Leaf-specific conductivities (LSCs – hydraulic conductivity per dry weight of supplied leaves). Huber values (transverse sapwood area per dry weight of supplied leaves), specific conductivity (hydraulic conductivity per transverse sapwood area) and tracheid diameters were measured throughout the trunk and crown of 20-year-old trees of Abies balsamca (L.) Mill. Measured specific conductivity was proportional to the radius to the fourth power of tracheids. LSCs, which indicate the relative water availability to different plant parts, are much higher in the trunk than in first order branches, and lowest in second order branches. The structural basis for this "hydraulic hierarchy" lies both in Huber values and in tracheid diameters. For similar diameter stem segments, there was no statistically significant difference for trunks versus branches in specific conductivity. However, in old parts of the tree, trunks are wider than supported branches and producer wider tracheids resulting in greater specific conductivities than in branches. In vigorous trees with strong apical control, Huber values were 12.0 times greater in the trunk than in similar diameter branch segments. In slow-growing trees with weak apical control, Huber values were 2.2 times greater in the trunk versus similar branch segments.  相似文献

Variations in the density and stiffness (Young's elastic modulus)of fresh wood samples drawn from different parts of the threemain trunks of a 32-year-old black locust tree,Robinia pseudoacacia(measuring 19.8 m at its highest point), were studied to determinewhether tree ontogeny can achieve a constant safety factor againstmechanical failure. Based on the properties of isolated woodsamples, the fresh density of sapwood decreased along radialtransects from bark to pith, while that of progressively olderheartwood samples increased, on average, towards the centreof each of the three trunks. Along the same radial transects,the Young's elastic modulus of sap- and heartwood increased.In terms of longitudinal changes in wood properties, mean woodmoduli (averages of sap- and heartwood samples) increased, onaverage, towards the base of each of the three trunks of thetree. However, the mean fresh densities of wood samples increasedtowards the top and the bottom of each trunk and were lowestroughly near trunk mid-length. The mean density-specific stiffness(the quotient of Young's modulus and fresh density) of woodwas thus lower toward the top and the bottom of the trunks andhighest near trunk mid-length. Mean values of fresh wood density-specificstiffness were used to estimate the critical buckling heightsfor sections of the trunks differing in diameter and age. Theseestimates indicated that ontogenetic variation in the physicalproperties and relative amounts of sap- and heartwood in trunkscould maintain a constant factor of safety (approximately equalto 2) as a sapling grows in height and girth into a mature tree.This expectation was supported by data from 16 black locusttrees differing in height and diameter at breast height (DBH). We used a Bayesian hierarchical model to analyze the variation in xylem anatomy, hydraulic properties, and the relationship between anatomy and properties within Douglas-fir trees. The hierarchical scales in our study included fertilization treatments (fertilized and unfertilized), trees within the treatments, and positions within the trees. We measured tracheid diameter, tracheid length, percent latewood, number of pits per cell, density, and specific conductivity (K s) on seven positions in each of 16 fertilized and 16 unfertilized trees: the trunk at cambial age 52 (breast height), 25, and 5; a branch at cambial age 20 and 7; and a root at cambial age 42 and 22. Vulnerability to embolism was also measured on the oldest trunk, branch, and root positions. For any measurement, there was little variation between treatments, however, there was great variation among positions. Tracheid diameter, tracheid length, number of pits per cell, K s, and vulnerability to embolism decreased vertically from the roots to the branches. Correlations were evident between some positions for tracheid diameter, percent earlywood, pits per cell, and vulnerability to embolism, mostly in the fertilized treatment. We found evidence for large-scale relationships (among all observations from all trees) between density and tracheid diameter, K s and diameter, vulnerability and diameter, K s and pits per cell, and vulnerability and pits per cell. At a smaller scale of within position, however, usually only the branches and roots maintained the relationship.  相似文献

To rapidly estimate pine sawyer, Monochamus alternatus Hope, population densities in forests, the vertical distributions of M. alternatus oviposition sites and larvae on infested Masson pines (Pinus massoniana Lamb.) were studied. Results showed that the number of oviposition sites on sections of trunks between 0 and 2 m above ground was significantly greater than on sections of trunk above 2 m, and the vertical distribution had a significant logarithmic relationship with trunk height. The larval number of M. alternatus on dead infested trees had a significant difference among heights of trunks. Sections on trunks at 2–4 m usually contained the largest number of M. alternatus larvae, while the number of larvae on trunks above 10 m declined significantly, as well as in the 1 m section of trunk at the base. The vertical distribution of M. alternatus larvae on dead infested pines showed a distinct parabolic relationship with trunk height. The number of oviposition sites of M. alternatus on infested Masson pine trunks revealed a significant exponential relationship with the diameter at breast height (DBH) of trees. A significant positive linear relationship also was observed between M. alternatus larval number and DBH on the host pine trees, as well as between the numbers of larvae and oviposition sites on an individual tree. The total number of larvae in an infested tree could be calculated easily using an established equation, through counting the number of oviposition sites at 3–4 m of trunk aboveground. This study developed a practical method for rapid estimation of M. alternatus populations.  相似文献

Breeding ecology of the Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) was studied in a mono-specific colony in the Anzali wetland, Northern Iran during the breeding season of 2016. The breeding period lasted from mid-May to late July. The average clutch size was 3.1±0.6 eggs and the breeding success 77.6%. No significant differences were found between nests built on trunks and those built on branches of trees. The clutch size and breeding success appeared to be independent of the structural variables of the nesting site (diameter of trees, height from the ground, height of nests from the canopy, nest number per tree, location of nests on trunks and branches). No significant difference was found between the timing of the start of incubation and the height of nests above the ground. The average vertical and horizontal distances between nests was one metre. Fish, particularly Carassius gibelio, dominated the diet of the nestlings.  相似文献

以来源于大洋洲原生种源区、亚洲原生种源区、亚洲引种次生区以及非洲引种次生区4个区域的20个种源短枝木麻黄种子和当年生幼苗为材料,通过种子千粒重以及幼苗苗高、地径、一级侧枝粗度、一级侧枝长度等7个性状对短枝木麻黄表型多样性进行了研究,以探讨种群苗期表型遗传差异,为短枝木麻黄早期遗传选择和遗传改良提供基本资料。结果表明:(1)短枝木麻黄种子千粒重在区域间和区域内种源间差异极显著,且千粒重具有显著的地理变异模式,随经度的增大而降低。(2)当年生幼苗苗高、地径在不同区域间及区域内种源间均存在极显著差异,其中泰国干东港种源幼苗生长最好(苗高76.6cm,地径4.64mm),而种源汤加的幼苗生长最差(苗高28.3cm,地径2.58mm)。(3)当年生幼苗一级侧枝粗度、一级侧枝长度、二级侧枝长度、每小枝节数和齿叶数在不同区域间及区域内种源间均存在极显著差异,其中齿叶数在区域间的变异系数最大(82.15%)。(4)通径分析表明,一级侧枝长度对苗高具有显著的正向影响作用,而一级侧枝粗度和二级侧枝长度对地径具有显著正向影响作用,它们可作为短枝木麻黄优良新品种筛选的参考因子。  相似文献

Recent work has suggested that plants differ in their relative reliance on structural avoidance of embolism versus maintenance of the xylem water column through dynamic traits such as capacitance, but we still know little about how and why species differ along this continuum. It is even less clear how or if different parts of a plant vary along this spectrum. Here we examined how traits such as hydraulic conductivity or conductance, xylem vulnerability curves, and capacitance differ in trunks, large‐ and small‐diameter branches, and foliated shoots of four species of co‐occurring conifers. We found striking similarities among species in most traits, but large differences among plant parts. Vulnerability to embolism was high in shoots, low in small‐ and large‐diameter branches, and high again in the trunks. Safety margins, defined as the pressure causing 50% loss of hydraulic conductivity or conductance minus the midday water potential, were large in small‐diameter branches, small in trunks and negative in shoots. Sapwood capacitance increased with stem diameter, and was correlated with stem vulnerability, wood density and latewood proportion. Capacitive release of water is a dynamic aspect of plant hydraulics that is integral to maintenance of long‐distance water transport.  相似文献

2010年3~5月在云南省楚雄市紫溪山省级自然保护区采用所有事件取样法(all-occurrencerecording),对巨(Sitta magna)觅食树种、觅食树干大小和觅食部位选择进行了观察。采用中心象限法(point-quarter technique)对研究区域的植物重要值进行了测定,用以计算觅食树种的选择系数。结果表明:巨对觅食树种具有明显的选择性,主要选择在云南松(Pinus yunnanensis)觅食,觅食时间占97.46%,觅食次数占96.54%,两者均极显著多于其他树种(P0.01),选择系数为43.89;巨对云南松的树干大小也有选择性,主要在胸径大于15 cm的大树(云南松中、成林)觅食,觅食次数占95.60%;在云南松的树干、枯树枝、活树枝和针叶丛4个部位中,巨偏爱在树干觅食,觅食时间占61.32%,觅食次数占57.02%,两者同样极显著多于其他部位(P0.01)。食物种类及丰富度、种间竞争和巨自身的形态特征等可能是影响巨对觅食树种、觅食树干大小和觅食部位选择的原因。  相似文献

云斑天牛Batocera horsfieldi(Hope)是白蜡树上近年来新出现的一种蛀干害虫。在东营市的市区绿化中危害日趋严重,目前其受害率达到10%强,成为白蜡树上继“窄吉丁虫”为害后的又一主要蛀干害虫。该虫2—3年完成1代,以第1年幼虫和第2年成虫,在主干或主干分叉处的蛀道内越冬。主要危害胸径8cm以上生长的白蜡树,在树干根基部30cm以下,或在主干分叉处蛀食为害,并常引起“风折木”。在9月下旬进行注药和4月上旬进行埋药防治,控制效果可达90%以上。  相似文献
