Summary The patterns of torpor and euthermy during hibernation was documented for 28 free-ranging Columbian ground squirrels (Spermophilus columbianus) fitted with temperature-sensitive radio transmitter collars. Adult males began hibernation earlier, were euthermic for a greater proportion of the hibernating season and emerged earlier than other age and sex classes. The patterns of hibernation of adult females did not differ significantly from those of juveniles. Emergence from the hibernaculum was preceded by a long (3–12 d) euthermic interval in adult males but not in adult females or juveniles. Changes in soil temperature did not appear to initiate emergence. The greater time spent euthermic by adult males is interpreted as a significantly greater energy cost of hibernation for adult males than for other age and sex classes. The benefits offsetting these costs may be increased reproductive potential in spring and avoidance of predation in late summer. 相似文献

The effect of a change in the environment on reproductive and somatic energy allocation in an iteroparous freshwater clam Anodonta piscinalis was studied at different time of the seasonal reproductive cycle. Environmental change was produced by reciprocal transplant experiments among sites of varying productivity. In addition, clams were caged at high density to reduce the availability of resources. Transplanting females before fertilization (from May to June), or during the early development of the brood (from July to August) had no detectable effect on reproductive output. Early-season environment, however, affected body mass and percent fat content of females from two populations. This suggests that maintaining the level of reproductive allocation when resources are reduced early in the season leads to lower allocation to somatic growth and biochemical storage. Transplanting females late in the season (from September to November) had a substantial effect on reproductive output and body mass, but not on fat content, suggesting that late in the season allocation to biochemical energy storage is important. Hence, late in the season reproductive allocation may be adjusted to prevailing conditions in preparation for winter. Indeed, over-wintering site had a significant effect on percent fat content, body mass and shell growth when females were kept in a new environment from September to March. Variation among transplant sites in female body mass matched the estimated productivity of the sites, suggesting that it occurred in response to differences in the productivity of the habitats. The results emphasize the importance of taking seasonal changes in the priorities of energy allocation and the seasonality of reproductive processes into account when developing or testing models of optimal energy allocation. 相似文献

Summary This experiment investigated the effect of parental nutrient shortage on the allocation of five nutrients to seeds and rhizomes in Sorghum halepense, a perennial, noxious weed, and to seeds in Sorghum bicolor, an annual, cultivated species. Plants from both species were grown from seeds and supplied with fertilizer at three concentrations. The allocation of biomass and nutrients (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) to reproductive and vegetative parts was determined. Relative biomass allocation to reproduction (either sexual or vegetative) remained constant in S. halepense in spite of large differences in total plant weight. In S. bicolor, however, biomass allocation to sexual reproductive structures decreased significantly with decreasing nutrient supply. Individual seed weight was not modified by parental nutrient supply in S. halepense, but it increased with decreasing nutrient availability in S. bicolor. Important differences in mineral allocation to seeds were found between the two species. While S. bicolor seeds were largely buffered from the differences in parental nutrient status, concentration of nutrients in S. halepense seeds decreased significantly with decreasing supply for all the nutrients analyzed except Ca. However, mineral nutrient concentration in S. halepense rhizomes remained remarkably constant despite differences in the external supply, evincing the priority given to vegetative reproduction at the expense of sexual reproduction. Overall, the pattern of nutrient allocation in S. bicolor seeds under different nutrient supply resembled the pattern observed in S. halepense rhizomes, but it had little resemblance to the pattern of nutrient allocation in S. halepense seeds. The results are discussed in terms of differences and similarities in the reproductive strategy of these two species. 相似文献

Summary Monthly observations of the Gomori-positive hypothalamo-hypophysial neurosecretory system (HHNS) of the ground squirrel, Citellus erythrogenys Brandt, were carried out light microscopically using several quantitative methods. From the beginning of hibernation, formation of neurosecretory material (NSM) in the neurosecretory cells (NSC) progressively decreases and release of neurohormones from the HHNS is almost fully inhibited. A maximal accumulation of NSM in the perikarya of the NSC and in the posterior pituitary (PP) is found in December. By this time the volume of the cell nuclei and nucleoli is at a minimum. Signs of activation of the HHNS appear and become more conspicuous as the time of arousal from torpor approaches. The amount of NSM in the NSC and the PP decreases simultaneously with the increase in volume of the NSC. Hyperemia and activation of glial elements is visible throughout the HHNS. The morphological signs of activation reach their peak in March. After reproduction is completed (April to beginning of May), the NSC and the PP are almost devoid of NSM. Beginning with June and during the summer and autumn months a progressive accumulation of NSM in the NSC and the PP parallels gradual diminution in the volume of the NSC structures and the glial cells. Mechanisms and effector pathways by which the HHNS influences seasonal adaptation of the organism and reproduction are discussed. 相似文献

From analyses of published data and a review of the literature, I studied indirect and direct measures of gene flow among populations of Columbian ground squirrels, Spermophilus columbianus. New analyses were used to examine an allozyme data set (seven polymorphic loci) that had been collected by Zammuto and Millar (1985a) from six populations of ground squirrels that were spread over 183 km. G-tests indicated significant variation in allele frequencies among populations, but F-statistics revealed relatively little population differentiation (average F
ST=0.026). F
ST values were used to estimate rates of gene flow indirectly and indicated fairly high rates of gene flow (average N
e
m=13.5). Recorded dispersal distances of individual ground squirrels were fairly short (most<4 km, maximum recorded distance was 8.5 km), and the minimum distance between populations used to create the allozyme data set was about 25 km. Thus, direct dispersal among the populations in the allozyme data set was highly unlikely. Small genetically effective populations may have experienced high rates of migration over short distances (about 43% of adults in local populations were immigrants), however, resulting in homogeneous allele frequencies over the geographic range. This explanation provides an alternative to invoking gene flow in the recent past to explain discrepancies between dispersal distances in the field and homogenization of allele frequencies over large ranges, Mammalian species that have virtually complete dispersal of subadult males from the natal area might be expected to exhibit relatively high rates of gene flow, regardless of actual dispersal distances. Genetically effective populations may be much smaller than more extensive ecological populations and experience higher rates of gene flow. 相似文献

Summary Fruit survival patterns, from fertilization to maturation, were examined for Carya ovata and C. tomentosa in a New Jersey USA forest. We observed fruiting and shoot growth characteristics over a 3-yr period to determine: (1) the patterns of fruit survivorship (from initiation to maturity) within and among years, (2) the relationships between shoot growth, fruit initiation, and fruit survival to maturity, and (3) the influence of phytophagous insects on fruit survival. We found that within years, smaller infructescences (1–2 fruits) exhibited greater relative survivorship than larger ones (3–4 fruits); however, absolute nut production was greatest for mid-sized infructescences (2–3 fruits). Among years, fruit survivorship varied considerably within populations. Across the 3-yr period we observed average fruit survivorship to be convex, linear, and concave, respectively. Likewise, shoot characteristics (length, width, number of leaves) varied concomitantly (decreasing fruit survivorship was accompanied by decreasing shoot length and number of leaves). Within years, we found no strong relationship between shoot characteristics and infructescence size and survival. The patterns of tree-to-tree variation suggested a strong genetic basis to shoot growth and fruit maturation. However, patterns of variation within and among years also indicated a strong environmental influence on these traits as well. Natural phytophagy by insects was observed to be low (<5%); however, shoot defoliations of 10–25% were not uncommon. Experimental defoliations (ambient, 10–15%, 20–40%, and 75–100%) did not result in reduced survival to maturity. Collectively, the data suggest that year-to-year variability in shoot growth has a greater influence on fruit maturation patterns than within year fruit-shoot relations. 相似文献

Summary Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were recorded in ground squirrels (Citellus lateralis) arousing from hibernation. Squirrels implanted with recording screws to record ABRs, and a thermistor to record brain temperature, were placed in a cold room at 9 °C on a 2L:22D light-dark cycle. Hibernating animals were moved from the cold room and ABRs recorded during arousal. The responses showed a gradual development of all brainstem peaks.At low temperatures there were very long latencies to the peaks. The amplitudes of the peaks increased (with fluctuations) as brain temperature increased. The data indicate that neural generators on the brainstem auditory pathway were all activated early in arousal.These results do not support the hypothesis that successive peaks appear and grow in amplitude only after previous peaks are fully developed. 相似文献

The squirrel family, Sciuridae, is one of the largest and most widely dispersed families of mammals. In spite of the wide distribution and conspicuousness of this group, phylogenetic relationships remain poorly understood. We used DNA sequence data from the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene of 114 species in 21 genera to infer phylogenetic relationships among sciurids based on maximum parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic methods. Although we evaluated more complex alternative models of nucleotide substitution to reconstruct Bayesian phylogenies, none provided a better fit to the data than the GTR+G+I model. We used the reconstructed phylogenies to evaluate the current taxonomy of the Sciuridae. At essentially all levels of relationships, we found the phylogeny of squirrels to be in substantial conflict with the current taxonomy. At the highest level, the flying squirrels do not represent a basal divergence, and the current division of Sciuridae into two subfamilies is therefore not phylogenetically informative. At the tribal level, the Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Sciurillus, represents a basal divergence and is not closely related to the other members of the tribe Sciurini. At the genus level, the sciurine genus Sciurus is paraphyletic with respect to the dwarf squirrels (Microsciurus), and the Holarctic ground squirrels (Spermophilus) are paraphyletic with respect to antelope squirrels (Ammospermophilus), prairie dogs (Cynomys), and marmots (Marmota). Finally, several species of chipmunks and Holarctic ground squirrels do not appear monophyletic, indicating a need for reevaluation of alpha taxonomy. 相似文献

We investigated the patterns of hibernation and arousals in seven free-ranging echidnas Tachyglossus aculeatus setosus (two male, five female) in Tasmania using implanted temperature data loggers. All echidnas showed a ‘classical’ pattern of mammalian hibernation, with bouts of deep torpor interrupted by periodic arousals to euthermia (mean duration 1.04±0.05 (n=146). Torpor bout length increased as body temperature fell during the hibernation season, and became more variable as temperature rose again. Hibernation started in late summer (February 28±5 days, n=6) and males aroused just before the winter solstice (June 15±3 days, n=3), females that subsequently produced young aroused 40 days later (July 25±3, n=4) while females that did not produce young hibernated for a further two months (arousal Sept 27±5, n=7). We suggest that hibernation in Tasmanian echidnas can be divided into two phases, the first phase, marked by declining minimum body temperatures as ambient temperature falls, appears to be obligatory for all animals, while the second phase is ‘optional’ and is utilised to varying amounts by females. We suggest that early arousal and breeding is the favoured option for females in good condition, and that the ability to completely omit breeding in some years, and hibernate through to spring is an adaptation to an uncertain climate. 相似文献
