Current knowledge about the abundance, growth, and primary production of the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa (Ucria) Ascherson is biased towards shallow (depth <3 m) meadows although this species also forms extensive meadows at larger depths along the coastlines. The biomass and primary production of a C. nodosa meadow located at a depth of 8–11 m was estimated at the time of maximum annual vegetative development (summer) using reconstruction techniques, and compared with those available from shallow meadows of this species. A depth-referenced data base of values at the time of maximum annual development was compiled to that end. The vegetative development of C. nodosa at 8–11 m depth was not different from that achieved by shallow (depth <3 m) meadows of this species. Only shoot density, which decreased from 1637 to 605 shoots m−2, and the annual rate of elongation of the horizontal rhizome, which increased from 23 to 71 cm apex−1 year−1, were different as depth increased from <3 to 8–11 m. Depth was a poor predictor of the vegetative development and primary production of C. nodosa. The biomass of rhizomes and roots decreased with depth (g DW m−2 = 480 (±53, S.E.) − 32 (±15, S.E.) depth (in m); R2 = 0.12, F = 4.65, d.f. = 35, P = 0.0381) which made total biomass of the meadow to show a trend of decrease with depth but the variance of biomass data explained by depth was low. The annual rate of elongation of the horizontal rhizome showed a significant positive relationship with depth (cm apex−1 year−1 = 18 (±5.1, S.E.) + 5.0 (±1.33, S.E.) depth (in m); R2 = 0.50, F = 14.07, d.f. = 14, P = 0.0021). As shoot size and growth did not change significantly with depth, the reduction of shoot density should drive any changes of biomass and productivity of C. nodosa as depth increases. The processes by which this reduction of C. nodosa abundance with depth occur remain to be elucidated.  相似文献

Patch dynamics of the Mediterranean slow-growing seagrass Posidonia oceanica was studied in two shallow sites (3–10 m) of the Balearic Archipelago (Spain) through repeated censuses (1–2 year−1). In the sheltered site of Es Port Bay (Cabrera Island), initial patch density (October 2001) was low: 0.05 patches m−2, and the patch size (number of shoots) distribution was bimodal: most of the patches had less than 6 shoots or between 20 and 50 shoots. Mean patch recruitment in Es Port Bay (0.006 ± 0.002 patches m−2 year−1) exceeded mean patch loss (0.001 ± 0.001 patches m−2 year−1), yielding positive net patch recruitment (0.004 ± 0.003 patches m−2 year−1) and a slightly increased patch density 3 years later (July 2004, 0.06 patches m−2). In the exposed site of S’Estanyol, the initial patch density was higher (1.38 patches m−2, August 2003), and patch size frequency decreased exponentially with size. Patch recruitment (0.26 patches m−2 year−1) and loss (0.24 patches m−2 year−1) were high, yielding a slightly increased patch density in the area 1 year later (October 2004, 1.40 patches m−2). Most recruited patches consisted of rooting vegetative fragments of 1–2 shoots. Seedling recruitment was observed in Summer 2004 at both sites. Episodic, seedling recruitment comprised 30% and 25% of total patch recruitment in Es Port Bay and S’Estanyol, respectively. Patch survival increased with patch size and no direct removal was observed among patches of 5 shoots or more. Most patches grew along the study, shifting patch distribution towards larger sizes. Within the size range studied (1–150 shoots), absolute shoot recruitment (shoots year−1) increased linearly with patch size (R2 = 0.64, p < 4 × 10−5, N = 125), while specific shoot recruitment was constant (about 0.25 ± 0.05 year−1), although its variance was large for small patches. Given the slow growth rate and the high survival of patches with 5 or more shoots, even the low patch recruitment rates reported here could play a significant role in the colonisation process of P. oceanica.  相似文献

In this study we examine the influence of non-monsoon sediment arrival on the high-diversity SE Indian seagrass meadows of the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar. We used a gradient-based approach to examine the influence of increasing sediment loads on species composition and shoot density. In addition, for the ubiquitous seagrass (Cymodocea serrulata), we tested the influence of sediment on its biomass and productivity. We identified three sites in Palk Bay and four sites in Gulf of Mannar (SE India) along a gradient of sediment input. At each of the seven locations, sediment traps were deployed to measure sedimentation rates. Nine seagrass cores were taken systematically along 50 m transects at a constant sub-tidal depth to measure shoot density and biomass. A few shoots of C. serrulata were marked to estimate the above ground seagrass growth rate. Our results indicate that sedimentation rates that ranged from 8.6 to 62.4 mg DW cm−2 d−1 could not explain species composition of the meadow or shoot density of the observed species. C. serrulata was, by far, the most abundant species and present in all sediment conditions. Sedimentation rates did not alter shoot elongation rates in C. serrulata, ranging from 1.54 ± 0.29 SD to 0.25 ± 0.02 SD cm d−1, but in contrast, increased vertical rhizome elongation rate. This increase was reflected in an increase in below ground biomass along the sediment gradient (R2 = 0.582, p = 0.01). C. serrulata appears to be able to adapt to the sediment dynamics in this area by allocating resources to rhizomes and roots to counteract burial and stabilizing sediments. Given that siltation is one of the most important threats to seagrass meadows, understanding the species-specific adaptive mechanisms of seagrass species in these high-sediment, high diversity South Asian meadows is an important first step in ensuring their long-term survival and functioning.  相似文献

Although shoot patchiness has long been studied in Posidonia oceanica meadows, small scale spatial structure of P. oceanica meadows is poorly known, as very few studies focused on this feature. In order to analyze spatial patterns within P. oceanica meadows that appear uniformly dense and undisturbed, we collected shoot density data at the Capo Rizzuto Marine Protected Area (NE Mediterranean, Italy). Intensive sampling was carried out within a square lattice at small spatial scale (i.e. in the 10−1–102 m2 range) and shoot counts were obtained from sample quadrats of different size (60, 40, 20 cm). Spatial data analysis highlighted high irregularity in shoot density from centimetric to larger spatial scales. Therefore the deviation between shoot density estimates obtained using conventional methods and the overall average of quadrat counts (assumed as the best estimate for true density) was never negligible even when larger counting quadrats or higher numbers of replicates were adopted. While shoot density is regarded as the most important property of a P. oceanica meadow and as an indicator of ecosystem health, uncertainty in density estimates and unknown expected errors impair the effectivity of this approach. However, we showed that error could be predicted based on sampling intensity and design in an apparently uniform meadow. Although results from a single case study cannot be generalized, our work is the first attempt at analyzing the problems related to density estimates obtained from shoot counts and it shows how sampling can be optimized to achieve any desired level of accuracy.  相似文献

One of the largest contiguous seagrass ecosystems in the world is located on the shallow continental shelf adjacent to the west coast of Florida, USA and is comprised of seasonally ephemeral Halophila decipiens meadows. Little is known about the demography of the west Florida shelf H. decipiens, which may produce 4.56 × 108 g C day−1 or more during the peak growing season. We documented seagrass distribution, biomass, and productivity, and density of sediment seed reserves, seedlings, flowers and fruits on the southeastern portion of the west Florida shelf by sampling along a transect at three stations in 10, 15, and 20 m water depth. Biomass, flower, fruit, seedling, and seed bank densities tended to be highest at stations in 10–15 m water depth and lowest at 20 m. Flowers and fruit were most prevalent during summer cruises (June and August 1999, July 2000). Seedling germination occurred during summer, fall (October 1999), and winter (January 2000) sampling events, with the highest seedling densities present during the winter. Seed bank density remained consistent through time. A Category I hurricane with sustained winds of 120 km h−1 passed over the stations, but only limited impact on H. decipiens biomass was observed. The presence of a persistent seed bank provides for recovery after storm disturbance, annual reestablishment of populations, and continual maintenance of the 20,000 km2 of deep water seagrass habitat present on the west Florida shelf.  相似文献

The results of 15 years of monitoring of Posidonia oceanica in the “Cinque Terre” Marine Protected Area (NW Mediterranean) are presented. Seasonal data on meadow characteristics (cover and shoot density), plant phenology (leaf number, leaf length and width, leaf brown portion, undamaged leaves), lepidochronology, leaf epiphyte cover and herbivore pressure collected from three stations at 5, 10 and 17 m depth were compared. Time-series analyses showed both medium-term (5 < years) and long-term cycles (from 5 to more than 20 years). The comparison of annual cycles with sea surface temperatures (SST) and rainfall showed correlations that differed in relation to depth and, in the case of epiphytes, with each side (internal and external) of the leaf blade. Meadow parameters (visual cover, shoot percent cover) and plant parameters (leaf number, number of undamaged leaves, number of scales shoot−1) showed a positive trend in accordance with the rise of air and sea surface temperature recorded over these last decades. Shoot density and leaf width showed exceptions. Leaf length, leaf brown portion length and the number of undamaged leaves shoot−1 showed positive or negative long-term trends, whose variability could not be related to climate data alone. The two major groups of epiphytes (encrusting algae and the bryozoan Electra posidoniae) showed negative trends. Grazing variability could be explained only partially by climate parameters. Epiphyte cover was found to be related to the NAO index. In conclusion, data showed that the effects of the climate change in terms of both sea surface temperature rising and rainfall decreasing may affect the growth cycles of P. oceanica on two levels: on a decadal level, with positive or negative trends in meadow and plant characteristics and in epiphyte cover; on yearly and seasonal levels, influencing endogenous plant growth rhythms, as in the case of leaf production cycle.  相似文献

The response of orthotropic rhizome elongation and primary production of Posidonia oceanica to anthropogenic perturbations and potential confounding effects of shoot age were assessed using a Linear Multilevel Model (LMM). This model examined the confounding effect of age by comparing the estimates of impact and variance components obtained by excluding and including Age as an explanatory variable. Age had a negative effect on rhizome elongation and primary production with an annual decrease of 0.6 mm y− 1 and 7 mg dw y− 1 respectively. According to the LMM when age effect was omitted, the differences between disturbed and control locations in rhizome elongation and primary production were 2.62 mm y− 1 and 0.044 g dw y− 1 respectively. These effects were statistically not significant. On the contrary, when age effect was included in the statistical model, impacts became evident for both variables, with significant differences between disturbed and control locations of 5.85 mm y− 1 and 0.081 g dw y− 1 for rhizome elongation and primary production, respectively. Thus, particular attention should be paid to the potential confounding effect of shoots age in analyses of impacts on growth performance of P. oceanica.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the spatial pattern of the shoot density of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica through kriging methods. Kriging is a group of geostatistical techniques to predict the value of a field at an unobserved location from observations of its value at nearby locations. The results of an ordinary kriging of both raw values of shoot density and normalized shoot density with reference to a density vs. depth model (Dn) were compared. Results confirmed the existence of spatially organized parameters other than depth that influence patterns of P. oceanica shoot density. Although still requiring additional testing for complete validation, Dn mapping appears to be a valuable tool to (1) infer causes for the meadow's condition and to design a cost-effective field survey; (2) define areas where protection policies should be undertaken.  相似文献

We tested the effects of UV radiation (UVR) and nitrate limitation on the production of dimethylsulfide (DMS), particulate dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSPp), and particulate dimethylsulfoxide (DMSOp) in natural seawater from the Gulf of Mexico and in phytoplankton cultures. DMS/Chl a ratios in PAR-only and PAR + UV-exposed seawater were 0.44–2.0 and 0.46–1.9 nmol DMS μg−1 Chl a, respectively, whereas the ratios in cultures of Amphidinium carterae were 1.0–2.2 nmol μg−1 in PAR-exposed samples and 0.91–2.1 nmol μg−1 in PAR + UV-exposed samples. These results suggested that UVR did not substantially affect DMS/Chl a ratios in seawater and A. carterae culture samples. Similarly, UVR had no significant effect on DMSOp/Chl a in seawater samples (0.83–1.6 nmol DMSO μg−1 Chl a for PAR + UV vs. 0.70–1.5 nmol μg−1 for PAR-exposed seawater samples, respectively) or in A. carterae cultures (0.20–1.3 and 0.19–0.88 nmol DMSO μg−1 Chl a in PAR + UV- and PAR-exposed cultures, respectively). In an experiment with the diatom, Thalassiosira oceanica, the culture was grown in high nitrate (30 μM) or low nitrate (6 μM) media and exposed to PAR-only or PAR + UV. The low nitrate, PAR-only samples showed an increase of intracellular dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) concentration from 2.1 to 15 mmol L−1 in 60 h, but the increase occurred only after cultures reached the stationary phase. Cultures of T. oceanica grown under UVR had lower growth rates than those under PAR-only (μ′ = 0.17 and 0.32 d−1, respectively) and perhaps did not experience severe nitrate limitation even in the low nitrate treatment. These results suggest that the elevated UVR in low nitrate environments could result in reduction of DMSP in some species, whereas DMSP concentrations would not be affected in eutrophic areas.  相似文献

The potential of alleviated fishing pressure measures established at the Marine Natural Reserve of Cerbère-Banyuls to affect phenological characters of P. oceanica, the main canopy-forming seagrass, was studied. Our results show differences in some leaf parameters between meadows under fishing prohibition measures compared to those without. In addition shallow P. oceanica meadows inside MPAs had lower non-structural carbohydrate content, yet are able to maintain themselves and, moreover, with an increased density. On the other hand, sexual reproduction was reduced inside protected areas.  相似文献

Lophocladia lallemandii (Montagne) F. Schmitz is an invasive red alga which has recently become widespread in the Mediterranean Sea. Temporal variability in biomass of L. lallemandii across a depth gradient (10-30 m depth), as well as invasive potential by means of its reproductive output and recruitment abilities was assessed. No variability was found across the depth gradient, suggesting a homogenous pattern of invasion between the sampled depths. In contrast, all variables displayed a clear temporal pattern with higher growth and reproductive output with increasing temperatures, both in shallow and deep populations. The high total and relative biomass values of L. lallemandii confirm the invasive nature of this species. Likely, the high potential reproductive output by means of tetrasporocysts (41.8 ± 9.34 cm−2), together with the high recruitment abilities (352 ind. m−2) explains the great colonization capacity of L. lallemandii which prevents any kind of manual eradication.  相似文献

Calcification and primary production responses to irradiance in the temperate coralline alga Lithothamnion corallioides were measured in summer 2004 and winter 2005 in the Bay of Brest. Coralline algae were incubated in dark and clear bottles exposed to different irradiances. Net primary production reached 1.5 μmol C g−1 dry wt h−1 in August and was twice as high as in January–February. Dark respiration showed significant seasonal variations, being three-fold higher in summer. Maximum calcification varied from 0.6 μmol g−1 dry wt h−1 in summer 2004 to 0.4 μmol g−1 dry wt h−1 in winter 2005. According to PE curves and the daily course of irradiance, estimated daily net production and calcification reached 131 μg C g−1 dry wt and 970 μg CaCO3 g−1 dry wt in summer 2004, and 36 μg C g−1 dry wt and 336 μg CaCO3 g−1 dry wt in winter 2005. The net primary production of natural L. corallioides populations in shallow waters was estimated at 10–600 g C m−2 y−1, depending on depth and algal biomass. The mean annual calcification of L. corallioides populations varied from 300 to 3000 g CaCO3 m−2. These results are similar to those reported for tropical coralline algae in terms of carbon and carbonate productivity. Therefore, L. corallioides can be considered as a key element of carbon and carbonate cycles in the shallow coastal waters where they live.  相似文献

Free-floating Utricularia inflata Walt. has the potential to alter native isoetid communities as it expands its range from the Atlantic coastal plain into northeastern New York lakes. This field study assessed (1) in situ growth potential for U. inflata at varying depths (1.0-3.0 m), (2) displacement of U. inflata from sites with different exposures to wind and water movement, and (3) U. inflata's relative abundance over a depth range (0.5 m, 1.0 m, 1.5 m, 2.0 m, and 2.5 m) at each of nine Adirondack Mountain lake sites varying in exposure. Plants grew well in shallow water (RGR: 0.014-0.039 day−1) at depths from 1.0 m to 2.5 m, but lost mass at 3.0 m. Significantly fewer U. inflata plants remained at sites and depths with greater exposure to wave action, as well as those with greater water current. Vegetation sampling confirmed greater relative frequency of U. inflata at sheltered sites and along deeper contours. Despite its potential to grow well in shallow water, water movement can prevent the accumulation of U. inflata there, and thus provide a refuge for native species able to withstand wave exposure.  相似文献

In this study we investigated above-ground biomass and morphological responses of a floating-leaved plant species, Nymphaea alba, to small spring water level manipulations (0.1–0.5 m) in a large, shallow lake over a 9-year period (1995–2003). A year effect was found in mean annual above-ground plant biomass with higher values found in years of low water levels, 275–339 g DW m−2 in 1995 and 2003 against 143–198 g DW m−2 in 1996–2002 (no data transformation). No significant changes in biomass patterns were observed within each season (one summer peak), except in 1995 when a summer decline in biomass occurred. The amplitude and duration of exposure to high water levels affected the spring and annual above ground biomass of N. alba. The plant responded to high spring water levels by producing longer and thinner petioles to preserve leaves from flooding while no significant changes in leaf surface area (except in May) and leaf/petiole biomass ratio were obtained. The results are interpreted with regard to plant adaptations to changing environments (biomass allocation patterns in the different plant organs and stem density) and the effects of other abiotic factors relevant to the size of the system. We concluded that small deviations in spring water level can be driving forces in a large system in controlling the above-ground biomass of this floating-leaved plant.  相似文献

Stand structure and biomass production of Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. were analyzed along north-south and east-west transects in the Burullus coastal lagoon (N Egypt, 410 km2) at monthly intervals over a period of 1 year (February 2003 until January 2004). For this purpose, young and old stands were selected at eight different locations in the lagoon. It was found that the north-south transect mainly represented a fertility gradient (207-286 mg l−1 TN, 30-106 mg l−1 TP), while the east-west transect was associated with significantly decreasing salinity (7-4 ppt). All morphological and biomass variables of P. australis were significantly different between young and old stands. On average, the old (7.3 ± 0.2 kg DW m−2) accumulated three times more total above-ground biomass than the young stands (2.5 ± 0.1 kg DW m−2). Shoot height, diameter and shoot dry weight significantly increased by 25-50% with increasing fertility along the north-south transect. Shoot density significantly decreased from north to south, while it almost doubled in the north sites from 109 ± 6 to 216 ± 7 shoots m−2 along the west-east transect. In separate stepwise multiple regressions, variation in water quality explained 34-63% of the variation in morphology and total above-ground biomass in the old stands (salinity and water level were most important for biomass, transparency also for height and density) while it explained 16-42% of variation in young stands (mainly transparency).  相似文献

Colurella dicentra clones isolated from bay water in the Mississippi Gulf Coast were cultured with artificial seawater. Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of six algae species (Nannochloropsis oculata, Tetraselmis chuii, Chaetoceros gracilis, Rhodomonas salina, Isochrysis galbana, and Prorocentrum micans), six C. gracilis densities, and six N. oculata densities (25,000, 50,000, 100,000, 250,000, 500,000, and 1,000,000 cells ml− 1) on C. dicentra population growth. Algae type influenced rotifer production (p < 0.0001). C. gracilis treatment (9120 ± 3351SD) produced the highest number of rotifers followed by N. oculata (5760 ±2232SD). P. micans had the lowest number of rotifers, although not significantly different from numbers in T. chuii, R. salina, and I. galbana treatments (p > 0.05).The population growth rate (r) varied with algae species treatment. The highest values were recorded for C. gracilis treatment (0.22 to 0.26 d− 1), followed by N. oculata (0.21 to 0.24 d− 1), and the lowest for P. micans (− 0.19 to 0.14 d− 1). C. gracilis and N. oculata densities had significant effects (p < 0.0001) on C. dicentra population growth. The highest rotifer production was recorded at a C. gracilis density of 100,000 cells ml− 1, followed by 250,000 cells ml− 1 and 50,000 cells ml− 1. Algae densities of 500,000 cells ml− 1 and above produced the lowest rotifer numbers. Population growth rate (r) varied with C. gracilis densities. The highest values were observed for C. gracilis concentrations of 100,000 cells ml− 1 (0.17 to 0.19 d− 1), and the lowest for concentrations of 500,000 cells ml− 1 and above (− 0.19 to 0.09 d− 1). The 100,000 cells ml− 1N. oculata density gave the highest rotifer production followed by 50,000, 250,000, 25,000, and 500,000 cells ml− 1. Algae densities of 1,000,000 cells ml− 1 produced the lowest rotifer numbers. Population growth rate (r) varied with N. oculata densities, with the highest values obtained for algae densities of 100,000 cells ml− 1 (0.35 to 0.40 d− 1), and the lowest for concentrations of 1,000,000 cells ml− 1 (0.05 to 0.012 d− 1). This is the first report of C. dicentra in Mississippi Coastal waters, and perhaps the smallest marine rotifer species (93 by 49 μm) ever cultured successfully.  相似文献

Two conceptual models of plant zonation in peatland lakes are given. The first represents vegetation on slightly sloping substrate (N < 0.2) in shallow and relatively large lakes. The vegetation is not diverse (H′ = 0.0 ± 0.01). The frequency and biomass of the dominant (Sphagnum denticulatum) correlate positively with lake size, and negatively with depth and substrate slope. They are also correlated with water transparency and water color (r = −0.53), concentrations of total organic carbon (r = −0.43), Ca2+ (r = 0.40) and humic acids (r = −0.46), and redox potential (r = 0.44). The second model represents vegetation on steep peat walls (N > 0.3) in deep, usually small lakes. Plants occur only on the upper part of the peat wall or form a multispecies curtain hanging from the lip of peat at the top. Species diversity in this scenario is higher (H′ = 0.18 ± 0.17). The curtains usually are composed of mosses such as Warnstorfia exannulata, S. cuspidatum and S. riparium, and vascular plants are rare. The frequency and biomass of bryophytes in this type of structure are related to substrate slope (r = 0.56), lake depth (r = 0.56), Ca2+ concentration (r = −0.69) and water color (r = −0.51). In both models, plant biomass is correlated with temperature (r = −0.78), irradiance (r = −0.64) and water oxygenation (r = −0.54).  相似文献

The uptake kinetics of phosphate (Pi) by Myriophyllum spicatum was determined from adsorption and absorption under light and dark conditions. Pi uptake was light dependent and showed saturation following the Michaelis-Menten relation (in light: V = 16.91 × [Pi](1.335 + [Pi]), R2 = 0.90, p < 0.001; in the dark: V = 5.13 × [Pi](0.351 + [Pi]), R2 = 0.77, p < 0.001). Around 77% of the loss of Pi in the water column was absorbed into the tissue of M. spicatum, and only 23% was adsorbed on the surface of the plant shoots. Our study shows that M. spicatum shoots have a much higher affinity (in light: 3.9 μmol g−1 dw h−1 μM−1; in the dark: 3.7 μmol g−1 dw h−1 μM−1) and Vmax (maximum uptake rate, shoot light) for Pi uptake than many other aquatic macrophytes (in light: 0.002-0.23 μmol g−1 dw h−1 μM−1; in the dark: 0.002-0.19 μmol g−1 dw h−1 μM−1), which may provide a competitive advantage over other macrophytes across a wide range of Pi concentrations.  相似文献

The recovery capacity of meadows of the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile in an area affected by illegal trawling were assessed after protection by anti-trawling reefs. The differences in vegetative growth between two impacted and two undisturbed localities were tested using growth, shoot balance, aborted branches, and leaf and rhizome production of both plagiotropic and orthotropic rhizomes. The organic matter in sediments, silt clay fraction and light intensity incident on the bottom were also measured in order to evaluate the physical conditions. Environmental and plant variables were measured in three sites placed inside each locality. The vegetative growth was positive in both impacted and control meadows but growth rates were lower in impacted than in control meadows. Average growth, production and shoot balance were greater in plagiotropic rhizomes from undisturbed localities (40.7±1.75 vs. 28.4±1.34 mm/year, 1133±0.06 vs. 708±0.04 mg DW/shoot/year, 1.36±0.08 vs. 0.96±0.06 shoots/year, respectively). Significantly greater values were also found in undisturbed localities for orthotropic rhizomes in terms of shoot balance and rhizome production (0.07±0.01 vs. 0.01±0.003 shoots/shoot/year and 155 vs. 124 mg DW/shoot/year, respectively). Of the physical parameters measured, only light intensity differed significantly between impacted and undisturbed localities. This parameter was 15.5% to 67.6% lower in impacted localities than in undisturbed localities, and this is the factor that causes the retardation of vegetative growth. The results show that recovery of P. oceanica meadows is possible after eliminating the cause of the impact. However, the very low rates of vegetative growth may prolong the time to total recuperation to almost 100 years. Therefore, effective management of P. oceanica meadows should aim to prevent meadow loss.  相似文献

Thirty-six programs have been set up to revegetate the degraded lake wetlands in east China since 2002. Most projects however faced deficiency of submerged macrophyte propagules. To solve the problem, alternative seedling sources must be found besides traditional field collection. This paper deals with an in vitro propagation protocol for two popularly used submerged macrophytes, Myriophyllum spicatum L. and Potamogeton crispus L. Full strength Murashige and Skoog-based liquid media (MS) plus 3% sucrose in addition to 0–2.0 mg l−1 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) and 0–1.0 mg l−1 indoleacetic acid (IAA) were tried for shoot regeneration. Meanwhile, full, half or quarter strength MS in addition to 0, 0.1 or 0.2 mg l−1 naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) were tested for root induction, respectively. Results indicated that both species had the ability of regeneration from stem fragments in MS without further regulators. However, the addition of 2.0 mg l−1 BA with 0.2 or 1.0 mg l−1 IAA in MS drastically stimulated the regeneration efficiency of M. spicatum, while the addition of 2.0 mg l−1 BA with 0.2 or 0.5 mg l−1 IAA in MS significantly stimulated that of P. crispus. For root induction, full strength MS in combination with 0.1or 0.2 mg l−1 NAA was preferred by M. spicatum, and the same MS without or with 0.1 mg l−1 NAA was preferred by P. crispus. Seedlings of each species produced from tissue culture room had a 100% survival rate on clay, sandy loam or their mixture (1:1) in an artificial pond, and phenotypic plasticity was exhibited when the nutrient levels varied among the three types of sediments. This acclimation of seedlings helped develop the shoot and root systems, which ensured seedling quality and facilitated the transplantation. Our study has established an effective protocol to produce high quality seedlings for lake revegetation programs at a larger scale. Since the two species we tested represent different regeneration performances in nature but shared similar in vitro propagation conditions, this study has indicated a potentially wide use of the common media for preparing seedlings of other submerged macrophytes.  相似文献
