We examined the feasibility of using the green seaweed Enteromorpha prolifera as an alternative carbon source for chemical production. For this purpose, the chemical composition (proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, and mineral analysis) and acid hydrolysis of E. prolifera were investigated. In addition, lactic acid fermentation of E. prolifera hydrolysate was carried out using five Lactobacillus strains. The lactic acid yield, which is defined as the ratio of the lactic acid production to total sugar consumption, varied depending on the strains. Lactobacillus salivarius showed the highest lactic acid yield (68.5%), followed by Lactobacillus plantarum (66.0%), Lactobacillus rhamnosus (55.8%), Lactobacillus brevis (54.5%), and Lactobacillus casei (51.4%). The results shown in this study imply that E. prolifera would be competitive with lignocellulosic biomass such as corn stover in terms of lactic acid production yield and that green seaweed can be used as a feedstock for industrial production of chemicals.  相似文献

Seaweed farming in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) Region is carried out in a number of countries, most of them farming Eucheuma denticulatum, Kappaphycus alvarezii and Kappaphycus striatum. These species are farmed mostly in Tanzania with limited production in Madagascar, Mozambique and Kenya; current production (2012) stands at 15,966 t (dry weight) year?1 of Eucheuma and Kappaphycus, valued at US$ 4.2 million with 95 % of this tonnage coming from Tanzania. Other countries in the region have limited or no seaweed production owing to problems of epiphytes, ice ice and markets. The problem of epiphytes coupled with ice ice that WIO countries are facing causes die-off of Kappaphycus which is the preferred species in foreign markets for its thicker gel, kappa carrageenan (vs. the weaker iota carrageenan from Eucheuma). New efforts are put to curb these problems including moving seaweed farms to deeper waters and cultivation trials of other carrageenophytes as well as agar-producing species, agarophytes. Research work has been initiated to evaluate Gracilaria and Hypnea farming and processing in Tanzania, the Republic of Mauritius and Mayotte. Gracilaria farming is at experimental stages as a biofilter of fishpond effluents and as potential species for the production of agar with growth rates of 1.5–1.9 % day?1. Hypnea farming is only being initiated in Mauritius and Mayotte at present. Other innovations including value addition by making various seaweed products and encouraging the consumption of seaweed as food at least in Tanzania and Mauritius are increasing further the importance of the seaweed farming and processing industry in the WIO Region.  相似文献

Although the ostrich fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris,is distributed throughout much of the Northern Hemisphere, its consumption as a spring vegetable has been largely restricted to the tables of the Maritime Provinces in Canada and neighboring Maine in the United States. However, in little more than a decade the demand has expanded beyond these traditional boundaries, due to the present availability of the frozen product. The heart of the industry is undoubtedly New Brunswick. The harvest of 200 t/yr is approximately 4 times that of Maine, and from an historical vantage the traditional use as a spring vegetable is with the New Brunswickers as well. In light of the present high demand for the product and the reports of localized overpicking, a review of the economic history, resource management and attempts at cultivation is presented.  相似文献

Pacific dulse (Devaleraea mollis), a type of red macroalgae, is of particular interest in the context of plant-based protein given its high protein content. One challenge in utilizing seaweed-derived protein is the poor protein recovery/yield and high cost that limits wider adaptation. In this study we aimed to evaluate methods for protein extraction from Pacific dulse to achieve a higher protein recovery rate. We evaluated the effect of cellulase treatment, under two extraction approaches, on the protein recovery and phenolic interference in Pacific dulse extracts. Commercial cellulases Viscozyme and Celluclast (2%, v/v) improved crude protein recoveries in both aqueous-alkaline and sequential protein fractionation approaches. The use of Osborne method to sequentially recover water-, saline-, alkaline-, and ethanol-soluble protein fractions resulted in more than a threefold increase in yield even at low-temperature conditions, mainly with the recovery of more protein in both albumin and globulin fractions. Without cellulase treatment, extending extraction time provides no improvement in protein yield but rather favors an increase in phenolic interference. Collectively, these results show that cellulase-aided sequential protein extraction can be used for improved protein recovery from Pacific dulse.

It is known that seaweeds differ greatly from land plants in their sugar composition. The current research on the L-lactic acid fermentation process focuses on land plant sugars as a carbon source, with the potential of seaweed sugars being largely ignored. This study examined the feasibility of seaweed biomass as a possible carbon source for the production of l-lactic acid, by comparing the fermentation of seaweed sugars (d-galactose, d-mannitol, l-rhamnose, d-glucuronic acid, and l-fucose) and land plant sugars (d-glucose, d-xylose, d-mannose, and l-arabinose). The experiments were repeated with 2 sugar acids (d-gluconic acid, d-glucaric acid) in order to investigate the effect of the degree of reduction of carbon source on the fermentation yield. This research also examined the effect of bacterial strain on the characteristics of fermentation reactions, by conducting l-lactic acid fermentation with 7 different Lactobacillus species. Taking into account the sugar composition of seaweed and the levels of lactic acid production from each pure sugar, it was possible to predict the lactic acid production yield of various seaweeds and land plants. From comparative analysis of the predicted lactic acid production yield, it was found that seaweeds are already comparable to lignocellulosics at the current stage of technology. If new technologies for the utilization of non-fermentable seaweed sugars are developed, seaweeds show promise as an even more useful biomass feedstock than lignocellulosics.  相似文献

Daily consumption of seaweed has been proposed as a factor in explaining lower postmenopausal breast cancer (BC) incidence and mortality rates in Japan. This clinical trial assessed the impact of introducing seaweed- to non-seaweed-consuming American postmenopausal women. Fifteen healthy postmenopausal women were recruited for a 3-month single-blinded placebo controlled clinical trial; five had no history of BC (controls) and ten were BC survivors. Participants ingested ten capsules daily (5 g day?1) of placebo for 4 weeks, seaweed (Undaria) for 4 weeks, then placebo for another 4 weeks. Blood and urine samples were collected after each treatment period. Urinary human urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor concentrations (uPAR) were analyzed by ELISA, and urine and serum were analyzed for protein expression using surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization–time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS). Urinary creatinine standardized uPAR (in pg mL μg?1 creatinine) changed significantly between groups, decreasing by about half following seaweed supplementation (placebo 1, 1.5 (95 % CI, 0.9–2.1) and seaweed, 0.9 (95 % CI, 0.6–1.1) while placebo 2 returned to pre-seaweed concentration (1.7 (95 % CI, 1.2-2.2); p?=?0.01, ANOVA). One SELDI-TOF-MS-identified urinary protein (m/z 9,776) showed a similar reversible decrease with seaweed and is reported to be associated with cell attachment. One serum protein (m/z 8,928) reversibly increased with seaweed and may be the immunostimulatory complement activation C3a des-arginine. uPAR is higher among postmenopausal women generally, and for BC patients, it is associated with unfavorable BC prognosis. By lowering uPAR, dietary seaweed may help explain lower BC incidence and mortality among postmenopausal women in Japan.  相似文献

Citric acid (CA) is the most important commercial product which is produced by using various sugar substrates in the terrestrial environment. The present study made an attempt to produce citric acid by the fungal strain Aspergillus niger from red seaweed Gelidiella acerosa is the best alternative to sugar substrate in the marine environment. In this study three types of production media were prepared including control (sucrose) by following standard fermentation conditions. The acid production was indicated by the reduction of pH levels. The control medium gave the highest yield of 80 g/l at pH 1.5 and the medium containing crude seaweed powder and other compositions gave the yield of 30 g/l at pH 3.5 whereas the medium containing crude seaweed and 10% sucrose gave the yield of 50 g/l at pH 3.0. When calculating the benefit cost ratio, crude seaweed powder and 10% sucrose yielded 50 g of citric acid at the lower cost of Rs. 35, whereas the other two media gave the yield of 80 and 30 g respectively with the cost of Rs. 77 and 28. In economic point of view, the medium containing seaweed and 10% sucrose showed more benefit with lower cost.  相似文献

Background

Ecologists, fisheries scientists, and coastal managers have all called for an ecosystem approach to fisheries management, yet many species such as the American lobster (Homarus americanus) are still largely managed individually. One hypothesis that has yet to be tested suggests that human augmentation of lobster diets via the use of Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) as bait may contribute to recent increases in lobster landings. Currently 70% of Atlantic herring landings in the Gulf of Maine are used as bait to catch lobsters in traps throughout coastal New England.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We examined the effects of this herring bait on the diet composition and growth rate of lobsters at heavily baited vs. seasonally closed (i.e., bait free) sites in coastal Maine. Our results suggest that human use of herring bait may be subsidizing juvenile lobster diets, thereby enhancing lobster growth and the overall economic value and yield of one of the most valuable fisheries in the U.S.

Conclusions/Significance

Our study illustrates that shifting to an ecosystem approach to fisheries management should require consideration of cross-fishery interactions.  相似文献

In the Indo-Pacific region, several species of the green seaweed genus Caulerpa Lamouroux (1809) are very popular as human food because of their delicious taste and crunchy texture, which are pleasing to the palate, and because of their health benefits: Caulerpa contains proteins, fiber, minerals, vitamins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and bioactive anti-oxidants. The consumption of these seaweeds is well established in local traditions and, for this reason, several seaweed farms have been established, or are under assessment, with a view to providing additional sources of income for local communities and to secure their livelihoods. Currently Caulerpa species are mostly collected from the wild and sold on the markets. However, farms can use a range of culture techniques such as bottom planting, off-bottom culture, floating long lines, or land-based raceways. This paper presents an overview of the traditional consumption and nutritional values of Caulerpa in the Indo-Pacific region and the different farming methods used for Caulerpa culture.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to characterise the composition of five seaweed species (Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus serratus, Fucus vesiculosus, Laminaria hyperborea and Sargassum muticum), their extracts and commercial formulations, using thermogravimetry (TGA), energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Analyses of the samples by TGA and EDX provided information on the proportions of algal cell wall, inorganic fractions and minerals. The main carbohydrate constituents of the five species and extracts were identified by their pyrolysis products, e.g. 1-(2-furanyl) ethanone, 5-methyl-2-furcarboxaldehyde, 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one, diannhydromannitol, 1,6-anhydromannopyranose and 1,6-anhydromannofuranose, using Py-GC/MS. The differences in relative intensities of the infrared bands of the five species were enhanced, especially after acid extraction compared with alkaline or neutral treatments, resulting in improved understanding of the compositional changes. In addition four commercial formulations and two acidic extracts of A. nodosum were evaluated for composition using the techniques. The dry matter, pH, electrical conductivity, ash, carbon and nitrogen content of the six preparations showed significant differences in composition. Variations in fatty acid, alginic acid, mannitol, laminarin and fucoidan content of the six formulations were reported. The results have shown that TGA, EDX, Py-GC/MS and FTIR are complementary techniques for rapid evaluation of seaweed materials and products.  相似文献

The physiological condition and fecundity of an organism is frequently controlled by diet. As changes in environmental conditions often cause organisms to alter their foraging behavior, a comprehensive understanding of how diet influences the fitness of an individual is central to predicting the effect of environmental change on population dynamics. We experimentally manipulated the diet of the economically and ecologically important blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, to approximate the effects of a dietary shift from primarily animal to plant tissue, a phenomenon commonly documented in crabs. Crabs whose diet consisted exclusively of animal tissue had markedly lower mortality and consumed substantially more food than crabs whose diet consisted exclusively of seaweed. The quantity of food consumed had a significant positive influence on reproductive effort and long-term energy stores. Additionally, seaweed diets produced a three-fold decrease in hepatopancreas lipid content and a simultaneous two-fold increase in crab aggression when compared to an animal diet. Our results reveal that the consumption of animal tissue substantially enhanced C. sapidus fitness, and suggest that a dietary shift to plant tissue may reduce crab population growth by decreasing fecundity as well as increasing mortality. This study has implications for C. sapidus fisheries.  相似文献

Invasive species have become an increasingly greater concern for the ecological health of coastal ecosystems, yet vectors of these introductions often are unclear. This project evaluated the potential for the brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum ecad scorpiodes (Hauck) Reinke, packaged with bait worms (Nereis virens) harvested from the coast of Maine (USA), as a vector of invasive marine fauna and flora. Often, the seaweed and contents of the bait boxes are discarded into the water by recreational fishermen after using the bait worms, and any included non-native species may then be introduced. Bait boxes were purchased from several commercial vendors in Connecticut and New York over a two-year period. Subsamples of the seaweed were placed in laboratory culture and the growth of associated macro- and microalgae was monitored. Marine invertebrate species present in the samples were also identified and quantified. Results indicated 13 species of macroalgae and 23 species of invertebrates were associated with baitboxes. Among the highly diverse microbial assemblage detected, two species of potentially toxic marine microalgae, Alexandrium fundyense Balech and Pseudonitzschia multiseries (Hasle) Hasle, were found both prior to and after incubation at various temperatures, indicating these harmful algae are brought to and can survive in receiving waters. These findings highlight the need to consider alternative choices of bait box packaging materials or appropriate disposal methods of the seaweed in order to minimize the transport of species which are not native to the receiving coastal waters.  相似文献

Seaweeds emerge as promising third-generation renewable for sustainable bioproduction. In the present work, we valorized brown seaweed to produce l-lysine, the world's leading feed amino acid, using Corynebacterium glutamicum, which was streamlined by systems metabolic engineering. The mutant C. glutamicum SEA-1 served as a starting point for development because it produced small amounts of l-lysine from mannitol, a major seaweed sugar, because of the deletion of its arabitol repressor AtlR and its engineered l-lysine pathway. Starting from SEA-1, we systematically optimized the microbe to redirect excess NADH, formed on the sugar alcohol, towards NADPH, required for l-lysine synthesis. The mannitol dehydrogenase variant MtlD D75A, inspired by 3D protein homology modelling, partly generated NADPH during the oxidation of mannitol to fructose, leading to a 70% increased l-lysine yield in strain SEA-2C. Several rounds of strain engineering further increased NADPH supply and l-lysine production. The best strain, SEA-7, overexpressed the membrane-bound transhydrogenase pntAB together with codon-optimized gapN, encoding NADPH-dependent glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase, and mak, encoding fructokinase. In a fed-batch process, SEA-7 produced 76 g L−1 l-lysine from mannitol at a yield of 0.26 mol mol−1 and a maximum productivity of 2.1 g L−1 h−1. Finally, SEA-7 was integrated into seaweed valorization cascades. Aqua-cultured Laminaria digitata, a major seaweed for commercial alginate, was extracted and hydrolyzed enzymatically, followed by recovery and clean-up of pure alginate gum. The residual sugar-based mixture was converted to l-lysine at a yield of 0.27 C-mol C-mol−1 using SEA-7. Second, stems of the wild-harvested seaweed Durvillaea antarctica, obtained as waste during commercial processing of the blades for human consumption, were extracted using acid treatment. Fermentation of the hydrolysate using SEA-7 provided l-lysine at a yield of 0.40 C-mol C-mol−1. Our findings enable improvement of the efficiency of seaweed biorefineries using tailor-made C. glutamicum strains.  相似文献

With the increase in global oceanic trade the establishment of non-indigenous marine organisms has become a major environmental and economic problem worldwide. Recently, the Atlantic rock crab (Cancer irroratus) was reported in Icelandic waters, Eastern North Atlantic. This is the first record of this relatively large crab species outside its natural range, i.e. the east coast of North America. The crab was most likely transferred to Iceland as larvae in ballast water and has successfully established a reproducing population in Icelandic waters. The species is distributed along the southwestern- and western-coast of Iceland. Adult specimens are now common in Faxaflói Bay, Southwest Iceland, but with sporadic occurrences in western and northwestern Icelandic waters. The green crab (Carcinus maenas) and the spider crab (Hyas araneus) are the only native brachyuran decapod species commonly found in its new habitat, but despite its recent colonization the rock crab was the most abundant brachyuran in the areas studied in southwest Iceland. Egg bearing rock crab and green crab females were found from June to October, while egg bearing spider crab females were seen from July to December. In Southwest Iceland both rock crab and green crab larvae were abundant in mid-summer but rare in both spring and autumn, which is opposite of what was observed for the spider crab. The size and abundance of adult crabs, their reproductive conditions, and occurrence of all larval stages, indicate that the Atlantic rock crab has successfully colonized Iceland.  相似文献

Convoluta convoluta (Abildgaard 1806) is a small (2-3 mm long) acoellous turbellarian flatworm from Europe that has invaded the Gulf of Maine within the last 5 years. Although it has been reported in densities of up to 19 individuals/cm2, its ecological impact remains unknown. In its native habitat, it consumes harpacticoid copepods and primary settling mussels <0.5-mm shell length. This study estimated the impact of C. convoluta on juvenile blue mussel populations (Mytilus edulis Linnaeus 1758) around the Isles of Shoals in the southern Gulf of Maine, USA as well as looking at their distribution in their new habitat. We surveyed worm densities at sites of differing wave exposure over three substrates (hard substrates, bladed algae, filamentous algae) to quantify patterns of worm abundance. We found worms on all substrate types with their highest abundances occurring in areas of maximal sunlight exposure and minimal physical disturbance. We showed a definite pattern of consumption of mussels in the lab and found C. convoluta to consume up to 35% of primary settling mussels in the field, but only under certain conditions. Per capita impact on juvenile mussels was found to vary greatly in correlation with mussel recruitment rate and water temperature, but not with the consumption of harpacticoids. Our results also suggested that per capita interaction strength was reduced by intraspecific density-dependent competition and water temperature. The overall impact of C. convoluta on mussel populations in the southern Gulf of Maine is therefore estimated to be minimal.  相似文献

Hemigrapsus sanguineus, the Asian shore crab, has rapidly replaced Carcinus maenas, the green crab, as the most abundant crab on rocky shores in the northwest Atlantic since its introduction to the United States (USA) in 1988. The northern edge of this progressing invasion is the Gulf of Maine, where Asian shore crabs are only abundant in the south. We compared H. sanguineus population densities to those from published 2005 surveys and quantified genetic variation using the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene. We found that the range of H. sanguineus had extended northward since 2005, that population density had increased substantially (at least 10-fold at all sites), and that Asian shore crabs had become the dominant intertidal crab species in New Hampshire and southern Maine. Despite the significant increase in population density of H. sanguineus, populations only increased by a factor of 14 in Maine compared to 70 in southern New England, possibly due to cooler temperatures in the Gulf of Maine. Genetically, populations were predominantly composed of a single haplotype of Japanese, Korean, or Taiwanese origin, although an additional seven haplotypes were found. Six of these haplotypes were of Asian origin, while two are newly described. Large increases in population sizes of genetically diverse individuals in Maine will likely have a large ecological impact, causing a reduction in populations of mussels, barnacles, snails, and other crabs, similar to what has occurred at southern sites with large populations of this invasive crab species.  相似文献

This paper compares the biofilter capacity and cost-effectiveness of blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) and seaweed for use in integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) based on experiences in Ireland and Denmark. This comparison shows that weight for weight, mussels are a better biofilter than seaweed with regard to the amount of nitrogen assimilated. Furthermore, in optimized systems, areal requirement for mussels is similar to the cultivation of the same tonnage (1,000 t) of seaweed (approximately 8 ha). The cost-effectiveness of a mussel biofilter is €11–30 kg?1 nitrogen (N) removed based on various examples compared to production costs of €209–672 removed and €1,013 kg?1 N removed, respectively, for Laminaria digitata and Alaria esculenta from extrapolated laboratory and field trials. However, commercial seaweed (Saccharina latissima) producers claim that production costs are less than €10–38 kg?1 N removed. These up-scaled and commercial figures make the seaweed cost competitive to mussels for removal of nitrogen. Disadvantages such as predators (e.g. eider ducks) and biofouling should also be taken into account before choice of biofilter is made. These drawbacks can reduce overall biofilter capacity and biomass value as a consequence of biomass spoilage or loss. However, disadvantages may be mitigated by seasonal choice of cultivation and harvest times. Cultivation technologies and harvesting methods may be improved together with breeding to improve the cost-efficiency of the biofilter, especially in the newer European seaweed cultivation. Furthermore, upscaling of IMTA to commercial proportions, other than the Danish example, would allow more real data on production costs and revenues.  相似文献

Previous studies suggest that the n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) eicosapenteinoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), constituents of fish oil, exert chemopreventive activity in colon cancer. One of the mechanisms involved is the facilitation of apoptosis. While a pro-apoptotic potential of n-3 PUFAs has been suggested, it is still unclear whether additional consumption of fish will also lead to comparable results. The aim of this study was to assess EPA- and DHA-mediated effects on endpoints of apoptosis and to use a novel biomarker-approach to measure modulation of apoptosis by consumption of fish. LT97 human colon adenoma and HT29 human colon adenocarcinoma cells were used to investigate modulation of apoptosis by EPA, DHA or linoleic acid (LA) using a set of endpoints, namely phosphatidylserine staining with Annexin-V (flow cytometry), Bcl-2 expression (Real-time RT–PCR), and Bid, caspase 3, 8 and 9 expression as well as PARP cleavage (Western Blot). Furthermore, faecal water (FW) of volunteers (n = 89) from a human trial intervening with fish was used to investigate changes in apoptosis by flow cytometry. DHA was more effective at inducing apoptosis than EPA. LT97 cells were more prone to DHA and EPA induced apoptosis than HT29 cells. Treatment of LT97 cells with FW from volunteers consuming fish did not result in any changes in apoptosis. Taken together, our results show that adenoma cells are highly susceptible to n-3 PUFA-induced apoptosis. By using a biomarker-approach (FW) to measure apoptosis-induction ex vivo no change in apoptosis after additional fish consumption was detectable.  相似文献

Exploitation of the world's oceans is rapidly growing as evidenced by a booming patent market of marine products including seaweed, a resource that is easily accessible without sophisticated bioprospecting technology and that has a high level of domestication globally. The investment in research effort on seaweed aquaculture has recently been identified to be the main force for the development of a biotechnology market of seaweed-derived products and is a more important driver than the capacity of seaweed production. Here, we examined seaweed patent registrations between 1980 and 2009 to assess the growth rate of seaweed biotechnology, its geographic distribution and the types of applications patented. We compare this growth with scientific investment in seaweed aquaculture and with the market of seaweed production. We found that both the seaweed patenting market and the rate of scientific publications are rapidly growing (11% and 16.8% per year respectively) since 1990. The patent market is highly geographically skewed (95% of all registrations belonging to ten countries and the top two holding 65% of the total) compared to the distribution of scientific output among countries (60% of all scientific publications belonging to ten countries and the top two countries holding a 21%), but more homogeneously distributed than the production market (with a 99.8% belonging to the top ten countries, and a 71% to the top two). Food industry was the dominant application for both the patent registrations (37.7%) and the scientific publications (21%) followed in both cases by agriculture and aquaculture applications. This result is consistent with the seaweed taxa most represented. Kelp, which was the target taxa for 47% of the patent registrations, is a traditional ingredient in Asian food and Gracilaria and Ulva, which were the focus of 15% and 13% of the scientific publications respectively, that are also used in more sophisticated applications such as cosmetics, chemical industry or bioremediation. Our analyses indicate a recent interest of non-seaweed producing countries to play a part in the seaweed patenting market focusing on more sophisticated products, while developing countries still have a limited share in this booming market. We suggest that this trend could be reverted by promoting partnerships for R and D to connect on-going efforts in aquaculture production with the emerging opportunities for new biotech applications of seaweed products.  相似文献

Fucose-containing sulfated polysaccharides can be extracted from the brown seaweed, Sargassum sp. It has been reported that fucose-rich sulfated polysaccharides from brown seaweeds exert different beneficial biological activities including anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, and anti-viral effects. Classical extraction of fucose-containing sulfated polysaccharides from brown seaweed species typically involves extended, multiple-step, hot acid, or CaCl2 treatments, each step lasting several hours. In this work, we systematically examined the influence of acid concentration (HCl), time, and temperature on the yield of fucose-containing sulfated polysaccharides (FCSPs) in statistically designed two-step and single-step multifactorial extraction experiments. All extraction factors had significant effects on the fucose-containing sulfated polysaccharides yield, with the temperature and time exerting positive effects, and the acid concentration having a negative effect. The model defined an optimized single-step FCSPs extraction procedure for Sargassum sp. (a brown seaweed). A maximal fucose-containing sulfated polysaccharides yield of ~7% of the Sargassum sp. dry matter was achieved by the optimal extraction procedure of: 0.03?M HCl, 90°C, 4?h. HPAEC-PAD analysis confirmed that fucose, galactose, and glucuronic acid were the major constituents of the polysaccharides obtained by the optimized method. Lower polysaccharide yield, but relatively higher fucose content was obtained with shorter extraction time. The data also revealed that classical multi-step extraction with acid ≥0.2?M HCl at elevated temperature and extended time had a detrimental effect on the FCSPs yield as this treatment apparently disrupted the structural integrity of the polymer and evidently caused degradation of the carbohydrate chains built up of fucose residues.  相似文献
