The crossdating of tree-ring series is typically based on tree-ring width sequences, which is a crude abstraction of the growth signal stored in tree rings. In contrast, intra-annual wood density data allows a much more detailed comparison of wood growth processes and new measurement techniques scale well to measure large amounts of samples. Thus, chronologies of intra-annual densitometric curves can be built. Here, we investigate to what extent intra-annual wood density information can improve crossdating. We evaluate different approaches on a data set of Norway spruce trees (Picea abies) and compare the results to standard methods that are based on ring width or maximum density. Our results show that intra-annual densitometric data indeed increases crossdating success rate notably for short tree ring series that cover less than 25 years.  相似文献

Tree ring analysis is essential to reveal the environmental information encoded in the wood structure. It provides quantitative data on the anatomical structure which can be used, for example, to measure the impact of the fluctuating environment on the tree growth, to support global vegetation models and for the dendrochronological analysis of archaeological wooden artefacts. Currently, several imaging-based methods for tree-ring detection and tree-ring feature estimation exist. However, despite advances in computer vision and edge recognition algorithms, detection of tree-rings is mostly limited to two-dimensional (2D) datasets and performed manually in some cases. This paper describes a new approach to estimate the three-dimensional (3D) structure of tree rings and their width automatically from X-ray computed tomography data. This approach relies on a modified Canny edge detection algorithm, which is capable of detecting fully connected tree-ring edges throughout the image stack. Our results show that this approach performs well on six tree species having conifer, ring-porous and diffuse-porous ring boundary structures. In our study, image denoising proved to be a critical step to achieve accurate results. A major advantage of this procedure is that it requires very little to no user interaction rendering it a reproducible procedure for tree-ring width measurements. As it also provides 3D representations of the ring edges, it also may be used in the future for the inspection of anatomical features.  相似文献

This paper describes attempts to develop tree-ring chronologies from New Zealand matai (Prumnopitys taxifolia) and miro (Prumnopitys ferruginea). These tree species have been recovered from Māori archaeological contexts, including as objects such as canoes and palisade posts. Dendrochronology offers the potential to establish accurate and precise calendar dates for wooden objects but relies on cultural use of species that are also suitable for tree-ring analysis, and the availability of calendar-dated reference chronologies for crossdating wood of unknown age. We used archived cross-section and core samples from seven sites in central North Island, and nineteen core samples collected in 2019 from matai and miro trees at Pureora Forest Park for our analysis. Some of these samples came from long lived trees, with ring counts indicating ages up to 800 years old. We found that both matai and miro exhibit considerable variability in ring clarity and ring width. They also have ring anomalies affecting the reliability of ring-width series. Miro was very challenging, and no tree sequences were built for this species. Tree-ring sequences were built for several matai samples but no secure inter-tree matches were identified. Further analysis of matai samples is required to establish reliable tree ring patterns for inter-tree and inter-site crossmatching.  相似文献

Changes in the environment influence the growth of tree species in Europe. Understanding the drivers of these growth changes is important to predict further growth and adapt forest management. To disentangle the different drivers of growth changes, it is common practice to apply mixed modeling techniques to tree-ring width series. Mixed modeling requires precise, replicated and well cross-dated tree-ring width series. The goal of this study was to compare a recently developed ring width measuring method based on X-ray Computed Tomography images (CT scan) with the standard LINTAB measuring method and to examine whether the same growth trends are detected with both methods using common beech (Fagus sylvatica) and sessile oak trees (Quercus petraea) as a case study. Although the CT scan method has a lower resolution than LINTAB measurements, it is of interest since it measures wood density in addition to ring width and it is less laborious in comparison to standard ring width measuring methods. No significant differences in ring width were found between the two measuring methods. The small non-significant difference between the two methods could largely be explained by the drying of cores needed for CT scanning. The same growth trends were detected with both methods: for common beech and sessile oak in Southern Belgium. These findings suggest that ring widths measured on CT scan images can be used as input for long-term modeling of tree growth changes for the targeted tree species.  相似文献

Though the extraction of increment cores is common practice in tree-ring research, there is no standard for the number of samples per tree, or trees per site needed to accurately describe the common growth pattern of a discrete population of trees over space and time. Tree-ring chronologies composed of living, subfossil and archaeological material often combine an uneven distribution of increment cores and disc samples. The effects of taking one or two cores per tree, or even the inclusion of multiple radii measurements from entire discs, on chronology development and quality remain unreported. Here, we present four new larch (Larix cajanderi Mayr) ring width chronologies from the same 20 trees in northeastern Siberia that have been independently developed using different combinations of core and disc samples. Our experiment reveals: i) sawing is much faster than coring, with the latter not always hitting the pith; ii) the disc-based chronology contains fewer locally absent rings, extends further back in time and exhibits more growth coherency; iii) although the sampling design has little impact on the overall chronology behaviour, lower frequency information is more robustly obtained from the disc measurements that also tend to reflect a slightly stronger temperature signal. In quantifying the influence of sampling strategy on the quality of tree-ring width chronologies, and their suitability for climate reconstructions, this study provides useful insights for optimizing fieldwork campaigns, as well as for developing composite chronologies from different wood sources.  相似文献

The first European settlements accompanied by crop and livestock farming occurred approximately 7500 years ago. In this agrarian society, wood was one of the most important raw materials, most notably for construction, but only a little is known about wood use and woodworking technology. Hence, archaeological wooden finds are of particular importance. Dendroarchaeological studies combine the analysis of external and internal characteristics of archaeological wood: traces of tools on the wooden surfaces and the shape of timbers provide information about woodworking techniques, the tree rings allow dendrochronological dating and provide a paleoecological archive. In 2015 and 2016, two water wells with wooden linings from the Early Neolithic Period were discovered in the Czech Republic close to the towns of Velim (Bohemia) and Uničov (Moravia). The timbers were excellently preserved under waterlogged conditions. Here, we present a dendroarchaeological study including tree-ring and woodworking analyses. Furthermore, we consider former forest species composition. Overall, 15 lumbers from both wells were successfully dated by dendrochronology. The oaks used for the wells from Velim and Uničov were felled in 5196/5195 BCE and 5093–5085 BCE, respectively. Additionally, the taxa of 1859 wooden fragments, such as charcoals, branches and chips, were wood anatomically identified. The well lining from Velim with a hollowed tree trunk is already known from other Central European locations. In contrast, the construction from Uničov is unique for this period. Until now, the advanced construction design formed by four corner posts with longitudinal grooves and inserted horizontal planks was only known several thousands years later. The Early Neolithic wells from Uničov and Velim are the oldest archaeological discoveries of wooden artefacts in the Czech Republic that have been dendrochronologically dated. The tree-ring width series extend the Czech oak tree-ring width chronology more than 300 years into the past.  相似文献

In dendrochronological dating, we encounter the trouble that some samples cannot be dated due to the occurrence of anomalies in the tree-ring series. When dating subfossil wood for the extension of existing master chronologies, this may be an especially unwanted circumstance as subfossil wood is scarce and each sample is valuable. In Moravia (Czech Republic) outbreaks of the cockchafer (Melolontha sp.) used to appear with a disastrous effect on agricultural crops, and, for a dendrochronologist, on samples of wood to be dated. Oak ring width reduction caused by cockchafer induced defoliation can superimpose climate induced growth variations and may complicate dating of historical or subfossil samples. For this study, 33 samples of sub-fossil trunks were assessed; 19 of which were attacked by cockchafer. For comparison, we analysed a total of nine living oak trees from the forest district Strá?nice-Vracov, recently attacked by the cockchafer. Occurrence of the cockchafer was reported there in 1999, 2003 and 2007.We found clear growth patterns with cyclic narrow rings every 4 years. This allowed us to create an artificial curve expressing the recurring cycles of cockchafer outbreaks which assisted us in the detection of the same pattern in subfossil tree growth. The tree-ring series of the attacked living oak stand as well as the 19 individual tree-ring series from subfossil oak trunks could not be dated using standard chronologies and showed a high resemblance to the cockchafer life cycle. Additionally, we found out that the living oak stand was attacked in 1983, 1987, 1991 and 1995 as well. The results support the hypothesis that the periodical reduction observed in tree-rings at regular increments is caused by cockchafer infestation. This evidence is further supported by characteristic anatomical features in early wood. A mean tree-ring series was created from the individual tree-ring series of subfossil oaks even though radiocarbon dating showed completely different ages of samples. This means that the affected tree-ring series cannot be used for dendrochronological dating and dendroclimatological analyses. These series cannot be used without preceding mathematical and statistical modification.  相似文献

The Azores Archipelago, located in the North Atlantic Ridge, experiences heavy rainfall and mild temperatures with weak seasonal differences due to oceanic influence. To our knowledge, there have been no dendrochronological studies in the Azores. The aim of this study is to explore the dendrochronological potential of Pinus pinaster Ait. growing in this archipelago and to determine what limiting factor is regulating tree growth. To do so, we have sampled adult maritime pine trees growing in a plantation, in the Pico island of the Azores.Tree ring boundaries were not always easily distinguished, suggesting that in some years cambial activity did not stop during winter. Despite this, it was possible to successfully crossdate the tree-ring series and to establish a tree-ring width chronology with a strong common signal. Climatic correlations revealed a positive response to spring precipitation but no temperature signal in the tree-ring width chronology. Tree-ring width was also negatively correlated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the sea level pressure (SLP) in May − June.Intra-annual density fluctuations (IADFs), which are anatomical features formed in response to variations in environmental conditions during the growing season, were present in 85% of the tree rings. IADFs were identified based on its position within the ring: type E+, characterized as a transition wood from early- to latewood; type L, the most frequent, characterized as earlywood-like cells within latewood; and type L+, characterized as earlywood-like cells between latewood and earlywood of the next tree ring. Each IADF type presented a unique climatic signal: type E+ was positively correlated with early summer precipitation and early spring temperature; type L was positively correlated with early autumn precipitation and temperature; and type L+ was positively correlated with late autumn precipitation. In conclusion, the tree-ring width chronology established for maritime pine growing in the Pico Island of Azores contains a clear climatic signal for spring precipitation, whereas IADFs frequency correlated better with precipitation later in the growing season. For this reason, we suggest that IADFs should be included in future dendrochronological studies in the Macaronesia Biogeographical region since they can improve the climatic signal present in tree-ring width chronologies.  相似文献

In this study, wood anatomy, tree-ring width and wood density of Pinus sylvestris at the northern timberline in Fennoscandia were used to identify relationships among the parameters and to screen them for their climatic signals. Furthermore we investigated the influence of the juvenile wood section for all parameters developed. The measurements of wood anatomy were conducted with confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) while the density profiles were produced using an Itrax MultiScanner. We developed chronologies of ring width, wood density and anatomy for a period between 1940 and 2010. Correlations between wood density and wood anatomy were strong in the latewood part. For some wood anatomy and density chronologies youth trends were found in the juvenile part. Wood density decreased from the pith up to the 9th ring and stabilized afterwards, while cell lumen diameter and lumen area increased simultaneously up to the 15th ring. All chronologies contained strong summer temperature signals. The wood anatomical variables provided additional information about seasonal precipitation which could not be found in wood density and tree-ring widths. Our study confirmed previous results stating that the parameter maximum density contains the strongest climate signal, that is, summer temperatures at the northern timberline. Nevertheless, the intra-annual data on tracheid dimensions showed good potential to supply seasonal climatic information and improve our understanding of climatic effects on tree growth and wood formation.  相似文献

Successful cross-dating of subfossil wood, ideally in combination with precise information on germination and dieback, requires the accurate detection of tree-ring width (TRW) boundaries along continuous measurement tracks from pith to bark. However, wood decay and the mechanical deformation of cells often challenge the dendrochronological analysis and subsequent paleoclimatic and environmental interpretations. Here, we show that wood anatomical techniques can improve the assessment of heavily degraded and/or deformed material. We apply state-of-the-art sample preparation, thin sectioning and double-staining to a unique collection of Late Glacial pines that were growing ∼13,000 years ago in the vicinity of Zurich, Switzerland. Highly resolved anatomical observations not only reveal detailed insights into the quality of each cell, but also allow the extent of wood deformation to be identified. By improving the detection and cross-dating of particularly narrow rings, TRW series might be extended towards the pith and bark, where decomposition and distortion is usually most severe, thus adding to a better understanding of possible germination and dieback processes, respectively. Moreover, thin sectioning has the potential to manually reconstruct original TRWs by correcting for post-mortem deformed ring structures. Our results suggest that anatomical techniques should be routinely applied in the assessment of historical, archaeological and subfossil wood.  相似文献

Long-term analysis of tree growth using annual tree rings is increasingly in demand for tropical tree species. The basis of these studies has traditionally been the anatomical identification of the annual ring boundary. However, the structure of these annual rings has been sparsely explored for complementary physical and chemical wood traits. Here, we explore the relationships among wood density features and chemical elements (S, K, Ca, Mn) involved in the annual tree ring formation of 12 tropical tree species from non-flooded forest in the southern Amazon basin. Transverse wood sections were used for each species to determine: 1) macroscopic distinction (radial growth and wood density), 2) microscopic analyse of vessels, axial and ray parenchyma (anatomy) and 3) X-ray densitometry (physical) and X-ray fluorescence (chemical). For some species, the profiles of wood density, and Ca and Mn content showed intra- and inter-annual patterns that allowed to define and characterize the growth boundary of tree rings. Ca, K and S were mainly distributed in axial parenchyma cells, and around vessels, whereas, Mn was mainly distributed in fibres. Our results showed significant species-specific correlations between tree-ring width, density and concentrations of Ca, K and Mn. The anatomical characterization and the complementary information provided by the density and chemical profiles in some Amazonian species can represent a valuable proxy to improve the definition of annual ring-boundaries and improve the understanding of long-term growth and physiological patterns.  相似文献

From 1997 to the present, a sustained project in the Maramureș region in Romania was completed with the construction of a 781-year oak tree-ring chronology. A total of 395 samples from living trees and 429 from archaeological wood were analysed with dendrochronological methods. The study aimed to provide the scientific community with a new oak chronology that could be applied in dendroarchaeology, dendroclimatology and dendroecology studies and also for interpreting past socio-economic events. Furthermore, we studied the number of sapwood rings and the growth pattern for different time periods. The chronology covered the continuous period of A.D. 1236‒2016. From the 824 samples collected, we separated 271 tree-ring series into a new chronology (A.D. 1406–2016), which fulfilled all the criteria necessary to reconstruct past climate and environmental changes. The resulting new tree-ring chronology indicated robust signal series intercorrelation (r = 0.55) and an average mean sensitivity of 0.21. Based on an analysis of the sapwood, we recommend estimating a number between 8 and 32 rings to the date of final ring for 95% confidence range of mean on the for felling in the Maramureș region. Additionally, we observed that the number of sapwood rings was not correlated with altitude or oak tree species.  相似文献

For dendrochronology, both high spatial resolution and a wide imaging area are required. However, there has been no study to satisfy these two requirement for a tree-ring measurement method using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In this study, we developed a ring-width measurement method (ultra-high-resolution T2 weighted imaging: uHR-T2WI) using clinical MRI that can scan images at high resolution and over a wide sample area for waterlogged wood, by repeating small fields of view (FOV).Incidentally, until now, the method using X-ray computed tomography (X-CT) has been developed for non-destructive ring-width measurement for analysis of wooden cultural heritage and excavated wooden artifacts, and is mainly successful for dried samples with a low moisture content. However, the contrast of X-CT images tends to reduce as the water content increases, and it has been reported that the attempts to visualize waterlogged and PEG-impregnated archaeological oak wood were unsuccessful owing to a low degree of contrast between the water/PEG and the preserved wood (Bill et al., 2012).Actually, the archaeologically excavated wood generally has very high moisture content (400%–800%), thereby reducing the suitability of X-CT for tree-ring analysis. On the other hand, MRI equipment images the density and state of hydrogen nuclei, and so the expected quality of MRI improves as the moisture content of the wood increases. With these factors, to use both modality complementary will be very useful for dendroarchaeology. However, direct comparison of the suitable range of each modality has not been reported. Therefore, we examined the difference between X-CT and MRI related to moisture content of wood, and examined the range of adaptation for each modality as a function of moisture content.By using the proposed method, we then obtained a tree-ring width series and evaluated the usefulness of the proposed method. The uHR-T2WI method was able to obtain tree-ring width series comparable to those of an optical scanner from images acquired at a spatial resolution of 0.05 mm in high moisture content wood. The results show that wood with a high moisture content (e.g., waterlogged wood measured immediately after excavation, or high-water-content lacquered wooden cultural property) can now be successfully analyzed as non-destructive methods with MRI.In conclusion, the complementarity of both MRI and X-CT will be very useful as non-destructive inspection methods for dendroarchaeology. Although further research should consider more wood species, our study suggests that the proposed method will significantly advance the field of dendrochronology, particularly when related to dendroarchaeology.  相似文献

The potential of dendrochronological analysis of wood found in prehistoric and historic mining areas in Tyrol has remained unattended for a long time. For the first time, systematically analysed wooden artefacts from a prehistoric mining area in Tyrol (Kelchalm near Kitzbühel) can be presented here. The investigated artefacts, related to mining and everyday life, were found in the course of archaeological excavations, which were carried out between 1932 and 1953 by Richard Pittioni and Ernst Preuschen. Taking an adequate number of tree rings and well-preserved wood wane into account, 21 pieces of mining timber were pre-selected for a dendrochronological analysis. The identified wood species are spruce (Picea abies, n=18) and fir (Abies alba, n=3). The length of the established tree-ring series ranges from 13 to 145. We cross-dated the tree-ring series of seven wooden artefacts among each other, which resulted in a spruce-fir tree-ring record of 153 values (Kelchalm mean curve). The last tree ring measured of the Kelchalm spruce-fir mean curve dates back to 1237 BC. This accurate dendro-result dates the Bronze Age mining activities at the Kelchalm to about two centuries earlier than the long-lasting assumption proposed by Richard Pittioni. His assumption was based on the typology of ceramic and metal artefacts. The established dendro-date for the Bronze Age mine at the Kelchalm matches with available 14C results from other important copper-mining areas in the north-eastern Alps (NE Alps). The activities at these other sites are dated between the 17th and 6th century BC. Furthermore, the radiocarbon dating, as well as the dendro-result from the Kelchalm, suggests a transition from earlier mined copper-ore deposits in the eastern areas of the NE Alps, to the later mined ore deposits in the western section. This has led to both parallel and sequential mining activities in several ore districts during the last two millennia BC in the NE Alps.  相似文献

We developed chronologies based on the width of tree rings, total area of vessels, and the number of vessels per tree ring of the Prosopis flexuosa wood samples from the xerophytic woodlands of central Argentina. We evaluated the influence of climate on these tree-ring characteristics considering the period from 1940 to 2004 (65 years). The width of the rings, the number of vessels, and the total area of vessels were positively influenced by regional precipitation corresponding to the seasonalized November to December period, which reflects the importance of the water availability in the initial stage of the formation of the wood. The width of the rings and the total area of vessels were negatively influenced by temperature during the same period, while the number of vessels was not significantly correlated with temperature. The high temperatures in spring increase evapotranspiration, which reduces water availability to plants and results in an inverse growth response. This study was the first to develop chronologies based on anatomical characters of wood from the arid and semiarid regions of South America and with significant applications in ecological and climatic studies.  相似文献

European larch trees grown outside their natural range were intensively studied in terms of their adaptability to increased late winter temperature. A total of 264 cores of larch were taken from 12 sites throughout northern Poland at sites outside of its natural range. Clustering of de-trended chronologies reveal that research sites are grouped geographically. The mean ring widths, however, are similar amongst the four regions. In total, 21?% of the single correlations for all months for tree-ring widths were significant at the 5?% error level. For earlywood and latewood, the figures are 18 and 19?%, respectively. A generally positive precipitation effect was found, however, no significant negative effect was observed. Temperature had mixed effects on ring width. Higher temperatures in late winter and early spring increased ring width in region 2. High summer temperatures in both the previous and the current year, on the other hand, generally had a negative impact on tree-ring width during the growing season. On most of the sites, the observed long-term trend for increasing temperatures in March had no significant negative influence on tree growth. The visual condition of European larch together with the lack of any negative response of tree rings to observed March temperature increase suggest that it may be beneficial to introduce this species into new areas.  相似文献

Tree-ring width, wood density, anatomical structure and 13C/12C ratios expressed as δ13C-values of whole wood of Picea abies were investigated for trees growing in closed canopy forest stands. Samples were collected from the alpine Renon site in North Italy, the lowland Hainich site in Central Germany and the boreal Flakaliden site in North Sweden. In addition, Pinus cembra was studied at the alpine site and Pinus sylvestris at the boreal site. The density profiles of tree rings were measured using the DENDRO-2003 densitometer, δ13C was measured using high-resolution laser-ablation-combustion-gas chromatography-infra-red mass spectrometry and anatomical characteristics of tree rings (tracheid diameter, cell-wall thickness, cell-wall area and cell-lumen area) were measured using an image analyzer. Based on long-term statistics, climatic variables, such as temperature, precipitation, solar radiation and vapor pressure deficit, explained <20% of the variation in tree-ring width and wood density over consecutive years, while 29–58% of the variation in tree-ring width were explained by autocorrelation between tree rings. An intensive study of tree rings between 1999 and 2003 revealed that tree ring width and δ13C-values of whole wood were significantly correlated with length of the growing season, net radiation and vapor pressure deficit. The δ13C-values were not correlated with precipitation or temperature. A highly significant correlation was also found between δ13C of the early wood of one year and the late wood of the previous year, indicating a carry-over effect of the growing conditions of the previous season on current wood production. This latter effect may explain the high autocorrelation of long-term tree-ring statistics. The pattern, however, was complex, showing stepwise decreases as well as stepwise increases in the δ13C between late wood and early wood. The results are interpreted in the context of the biochemistry of wood formation and its linkage to storage products. It is clear that the relations between δ13C and tree-ring width and climate are multi-factorial in seasonal climates.

Above-ground forest productivity can be reliably estimated from tree-ring width measurements. In doing so, annual growth is linked to the tree’s basal area increment (BAI), which is the change in cross-sectional area associated with each annual ring. When BAI is estimated from ring-width series, a value for the diameter of the tree is required. This diameter is ideally measured in the field, but can also be estimated as the sum of the annual ring widths. Tree biomass can also be estimated directly from the diameter estimates derived from tree-rings. Summing the ring widths, however, typically underestimates the tree’s true diameter. To evaluate this potential bias in diameter, we compared field-measured diameter and diameter estimated from the sum of the ring widths using tree-ring chronologies for seven common species in the eastern United States. We then evaluated the impacts of using the biased diameter estimates on derived BAI and biomass values. To simulate field-sampling error (i.e., failure to reach the pith when obtaining a core sample), we re-calculated BAI and biomass after removing a portion of the innermost rings from each tree. Comparisons of these various methods quantify the substantial and consistent underestimations in forest productivity estimates. To reduce the bias in diameter when using ring widths, we developed a regression model to adjust the diameter using core samples. This model is predicated on having some field-measured diameter values available at a site to calibrate and validate the model, but it can then be used to produce estimates at similar sites with similar species where no field-measured diameter values are available. Values of BAI and biomass derived from model-estimated diameter were more accurate at representing absolute growth than values produced by using the sum of the ring widths. Assessing the interannual variations in tree-growth is dependent on having metrics that accurately reflect the area and mass of wood produced. Our results suggest that published estimates of BAI and biomass using the sum of the ring widths to estimate diameter have substantially underestimated these productivity metrics. Our new procedure allows for more reliable estimates of productivity metrics that use diameter-at-breast height derived from tree rings.  相似文献
