Effect of Water Stress on Pigment Formation in Quercus Species   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect of water stress in three Quercus species belongingto different habitats is investigated. Chlorophyll concentrationdecreased in all Quercus species with the greatest decreaseoccurring in Quercus robur. An increase of total carotenoidcontent was observed in Quercus coccifera and Quercus ilex, while in Q. robur water stress effected a carotenoid contentreduction. Anthocyanins increased with decreasing relative watercontent in the three Quercus species, the largest increase occurringin Q. coccifera. A correlation between xerophytic characterand pigment concentration is discussed.  相似文献

The possible role in drought resistance played by sclerophyllywas studied in the Mediterranean oaks Quercus ilex, Q. suberand Q. pubescens. Studies were conducted on leaves at 30, 50and 80% of their final surface area, as well as on mature leavesof the current year's growth in June and September and on 1-year-oldleaves. Leaves of different ages of the three species showed quite differentdegrees of sclerophylly (DS). Q. ilex leaves reached the definitiveDS of 1.75 g dm–2 during leaf expansion; Q. pubescensleaves hardened at the end of their expansion, with a finalDS of 0.93 g dm–2; Q. suber showed the lowest DS of 0.76g dm–2. Leaf conductance to water vapour (g1) of 1-year-old leaves ofQ. ilex, measured in the field, showed a duration of the g1peak values about twice that of the other two species. The minimumleaf relative water content (RWC), however, was near the samein the three species, indicating that water loss was recoveredpartly by Q. ilex leaves. This was apparently due to the higherbulk modulus of elasticity (  相似文献

Individual florets (4–5 mm long) of a purple cultivar(Fandango) of the horticultural chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemummorifolium Ramat) were taken from flower buds just prior toopening and cultured in a sterile liquid medium (containinginorganic salts and sucrose) at 15 °C under a 12-h day.For the first 14 days increase in wet weight was exponential.Anthocyanin appeared on the third day and was then synthesizedrapidly. Chlorophyll and carotenoid were present initially:carotenoid levels rose quickly while chlorophyll remained almostconstant. Highest pigment content and most growth were foundwhen the florets were grown on 3 per cent sucrose. However, the highest anthocyanin concentration was found with 4 per centsucrose, the highest carotenoid concentration with 0.6 per centsucrose. No anthocyanin was produced when the florets were grownat 6 or 30 °C; maximum yield was at 15 °C. Most carotenoidwas formed at 30 °C and most chlorophyll was found at 20–5°C. All florets from 1 to 7 mm long could be cultured. Theseresults are discussed in relation to flower colour and pigmentformation in vivo.  相似文献

It has been suggested that rate of desiccation can influencethe expression of recalcitrant behaviour in seeds, thus complicatingthe task of determining which seeds are truly recalcitrant. The objective of this study was to see if variable rates ofdesiccation influenced such behaviour inQuercus nigra L., atree seed known to be recalcitrant. Acorn moisture content, leachate conductivity, and germinationwere determined at various times during desiccation at threerates at 27 and 40°C. Moisture contents and germinationdecreased as the severity of desiccation increased. Leachateconductivity increased slightly but was not a sensitive indicatorof loss of viability. The critical (lethal) moisture contentfor these acorns was 10–15%, although rehydration within48 h of reaching this level prevented death in about 25% ofthe acorns. At 27°C any desiccation treatment that producedlosses of 30–50mg of moisture per g of acorn dry weightper day should be suitable as a test for recalcitrance in thegenus. Apparent physiological or fungal damage at 40°C rulesout the higher temperature for such a test. The variation in the extent to which autolysis of Aspergillusniger van Tieghem occurs in response to alteration of temperatureand of the length of the period of autolysis has been studied. The degree of autolysis at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 °Cwas 15–8, 23–9, 35–2, 40–8, 49–1and 56–2 per cent, respectively. Autolysis increased sharplywith the length of the period of autolysis reaching a plateautowards the second day at the lowest temperatures (0–20°C) and towards the fourth day at the higher temperatures.Theextent of the increase of autolysis plotted against temperatureindicates a linear relationship between these two parameters. The release of protein from autolysing mycelium of A. nigeris greatly affected by temperature, amounting to 1–9 percent at 10 °C, whereas at 30 °C it reached 5–1per cent. On the other hand, gradual increase of temperatureduring autolysis seems not to alter the content of mycelialcarbohydrates of A. niger.  相似文献

Interspecific introgression is a well-known phenomenon in oaks whose ecological and evolutionary consequences, although relevant, are still unclear. We investigated molecular variation and any evidence for hybridisation in nine natural populations of kermes oak (Quercus coccifera L.) from the Iberian Peninsula. Additive patterns in 59 nrDNA ITS sequences revealed that hybrid individuals showing intermediate genotypes between kermes and holm (Q. ilex L.) oaks are very frequent, although intermediate morphotypes are uncommon. Bayesian analysis of ISSR fingerprinting patterns indicated extensive gene-flow among Q. coccifera populations and neighbouring Quercus taxa. Introgression appeared to be an active mechanism in the pair Q. cocciferaQ. ilex, but no conclusive evidence supporting hybridisation between Q. coccifera and other co-occurring Quercus species was found. The role of canalisation in the maintenance of stable morphological characters in the face of extensive introgression is discussed.  相似文献

Gas exchange and organic acid accumulation of the C3-CAM intermediateClusia minor L. were investigated in response to various day/nighttemperatures and two light regimes (low and high PAR). For bothlight levels equal day/night temperatures between 20°C and30°C caused a typical C3 gas exchange pattern with all CO2uptake occurring during daylight hours. A day/ night temperatureof 15°C caused a negative CO2 balance over a 24 h periodfor low-PAR-grown plants while high-PAR-grown plants showeda CAM gas exchange pattern with most CO2 uptake taking placeduring the dark period. However, there was always a considerablenight-time accumulation of malic acid which increased when thenight-time temperature was lowered and had its maximum (54 mmolm–2) at day/night temperature of 30/15°C. A significantamount of malic acid accumulation (23 mmol m–2) in low-PAR-grownplants was observed only at 30/15°C. Recycling of respiratoryCO2 in terms of malic acid accumulation reached between 2·0and 21·5 mmol m–2 for high-PAR-grown plants whilethere was no significant recycling for low-PAR-grown plants. Both low and high-PAR-grown plants showed considerable night-timeaccumulation of citric acid. Indeed under several temperatureregimes low-PAR-grown plants showed day/night changes in citricacid levels whereas malic acid levels remained approximatelyconstant or slightly decreased. It is hypothesized that lowand high-PAR-grown plants have different requirements for citrate. In high-PAR-grown plants, the breakdown of citrate preventsphotoinhibition by increasing internal CO2 levels, whereas inlow-PAR-grown plants the night-time accumulation of citric acidmay function as an energy and carbon saving mechanism. ABSTRACT

Six species of the Quercus genus (Quercus ilex L., Q. coccifera L., Q. suber L., Q. trojana Webb, Q. macrolepis Kotschy, Q. cerris L.) have been screened for cytosolic ascorbate peroxidase (APX) by means of native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). A single isozyme was found in five species (Q. trojana, Q. suber, Q. cerris, Q. macrolepis and Q. coccifera), while Q. ilex shows two different APX proteins. The data showed marked similarities among Q. trojana, Q. suber, Q. cerris and Q. macrolepis with respect to the electrophoretic mobility. The validity of APX electrophoretic patterns in systematic studies is discussed.  相似文献

Plants of the C4 sedge Cyperus longus L. were grown at 10, 20and 30 °C. An asymptotic growth curve, the Richards function, was fitted to growth data for successive leaves. The mean rateof leaf appearance was a linear function of temperature with0.014 leaves appearing per day for every 1 °C increase intemperature. The instantaneous relative rate of leaf extensionshowed a marked ontogenetic drift which was most rapid at 30°C and slowest at 10 °C. The mean absolute extensionrate for foliage had a temperature coefficient of 0.16 cm d–1° C–1 in the range from 10 to 30 °C. The durationof leaf growth was independent of leaf number at 10 and 20 °Cbut increased linearly with leaf number at 30 °C. The smalldifferences in relative growth rate at the three temperaturesresulted in large differences in foliage area produced at theend of a 30 d growth period. The final foliage areas at 20 and10 °C were 51 and 9% respectively of that at 30 °C. Cyperus longus, temperature, leaf growth, Richards function, growth analysis  相似文献

Floral initiation in seedlings of Stylosanthes guianensis var.guianensis cv. Schofield grown at a photoperiod marginal forflowering (12–11.75 h) was promoted by a combination oflow day (25 °C) and low night (16 or 21 °C) temperatures, and completely inhibited by a 35 °C day temperature. Additionally, earliness of floral initiation under naturally decreasing daylengthwas negatively related to temperature regime over the range35/30 to 20/15 °C (day/night). Seed conditioning and germination in witchweed (Striga asiatica(L.) Kuntze) were temperature-dependent. With higher conditioningtemperatures, shorter conditioning time was required for germinationwith terminal dl-strigol (strigol) treatment at 30 °C. Maximumgermination (80–100%) was obtained by conditioning inwater at 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C for 14, 7, 5 and 3 d, respectively, and terminally treating with 10–6 M strigol at 30 °C.Seeds conditioned in 10–8 M strigol instead of water germinatedmuch less with the same terminal strigol treatment. Generally, conditioning was slower when seeds were conditioned in strigolrather than water. The reduction in germination rate by pretreatmentin strigol or pretreatment at low temperatures could be overcomeby increasing the terminal strigol concentration in the germinationtest. Conditioned seeds did not germinate at 10 and 15 °Cwith a terminal 10–6 M strigol treatment but yielded closeto maximum germination at 25, 30 and 35 °C with the sameterminal strigol treatment. To obtain maximum germination, boththe minimum conditioning temperature and the minimum germinationtemperature for conditioned seeds were 20 °C. Factors suchas conditioning time, and strigol concentration and temperatureduring conditioning and/or germination determine whether seedsremain in the conditioning phase or shift to a germination phase. dl-Strigol, germination stimulation, parasitic plants, seed conditioning, seed germination, Striga asiatica, temperature, weed control  相似文献

We analyzed the physiological response of the Mediterranean evergreen species (Arbutus unedo L., Cistus incanus L., Erica arborea L., Erica multiflora L., Phillyrea latifolia L., Pistacia lentiscus L., Quercus ilex L., and Rosmarinus officinalis L.) to winter low air temperatures. In occasion of two cold events, in February 2005 (T min = 1.8 °C), and January 2006 (T min = 3.1 °C and minimum T air = −0.40 °C during the nights preceding the measurements), R. officinalis, C. incanus, and E. multiflora had the highest net photosynthetic rate (P N) decrease (73 %, mean value) with respect to the winter P N maximum, followed by A. unedo (62 %), P. latifolia and P. lentiscus (54 %, mean value), E. arborea (49 %), and Q. ilex (44 %). Among the considered species, Q. ilex was able to maintain P N near the maximum for 150 min during the day, A. unedo, P. lentiscus, E. arborea, P. latifolia, E. multiflora, and R. officinalis for 60 min, and C. incanus for 30 min. The calculated mean winter daily P N ranged from 7.9±0.6 (Q. ilex) to 2.8±0.5 (R. officinalis) μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1. During the study period, chlorophyll (Chl) content decreased by 36 % on an average in the two cold events, and the carotenoid (Car) to Chl ratio increased by 133 % in Q. ilex, having the highest value in January 2006. Principal component analysis underlined the highest cold resistance of Q. ilex by high P N and high Car/Chl ratio. On the contrary, R. officinalis and C. incanus had the lowest cold resistance by the highest P N decrease and the lowest Car/Chl (C. incanus). Thus, winter stress could be an additional limitation to Mediterranean evergreen species production, and the capacity of the species to maintain P N near 90–100 % during winter is determinant for biomass accumulation.  相似文献

Sun and shade leaves of two Mediterranean Quercus species, Quercus ilex subsp. ballota (Desf.) Samp. and Quercus coccifera L., were compared by measuring leaf optical properties, photosynthetic pigment composition and photosystem II efficiency. The presence of trichomes in the adaxial (upper) leaf surface of Q. ilex subsp. ballota seems to constitute an important morphological mechanism that allows this species to maintain a good photosystem II efficiency during the summer. Q. coccifera has almost no trichomes and seems instead to develop other physiological responses, including a smaller light-harvesting antenna size, higher concentrations of violaxanthin cycle pigments and a higher (zeaxanthin + antheraxanthin)/(violaxanthin + antheraxanthin + zeaxanthin) ratio. Q. coccifera was not able to maintain a good photosystem II efficiency up to the end of the summer. In Q. ilex subsp. ballota leaves, natural loss or mechanical removal of adaxial-face leaf trichomes induced short-term decreases in photosystem II efficiency. These changes were accompanied by de-epoxidation of violaxanthin cycle pigments, suggesting that the absence of trichomes would trigger physiological responses in this species. Our data have revealed different patterns of response of Q. ilex subsp. ballota and Q. coccifera facing the stress conditions prevailing in the Mediterranean area.  相似文献

Growth responses of the red tide flagellates, Heterocapsa circularisquama(Dinophyceae) and Chattonella verruculosa (Raphidophyceae),were examined with 36 different combinations of temperature(5–30°C) and salinity (10–35 PSU). Heterocapsacircularisquama did not grow at or below a temperature of 10°C.The maximum growth rate of H.circularisquama (1.3 divisionsday–1) was obtained with a combination of 30°C and30 PSU. In contrast, C. verruculosa did not grow at 10 PSU andat temperatures of 25°C or more. The maximum growth rateof C. verruculosa (1.74 divisions day–1) was obtainedwith a combination of 15°C and 25 PSU. A significant temperature-salinityinteraction on growth was found by factorial analysis. Basedon the physiological characteristics obtained in the presentstudy, these novel flagellates have a potential for future outbreaksof red tides in pre viously unaffected waters.  相似文献

A strong selection for acorn characteristics is expected to have evolved in the mutualistic relationship between the European jay (Garrulus glandarius) and the oak (Quercus spp.). Bossema's pioneer work suggested that jays do not select acorns randomly, but rather they preferentially select some size and species. Preference for some seeds over others may have implications on plant community dynamics by conferring advantages (or disadvantages) on the selected (avoided) seed characteristics. In this paper we test to what extent jays select acorns by species and/or by size and the relation between these two traits in Mediterranean oak species. The experiments consist of a set of field tests in which acorns from four different coexisting Mediterranean oak species (Quercus ilex, Quercus faginea, Quercus suber, and Quercus coccifera) were placed in artificial feeders accessible to wild jays. The acorns were previously measured to control individual acorn characteristics. Using video-recording techniques, we followed jay activity and the fate of each acorn (sequence of acorn selection and method of transport). Q. ilex acorns were preferred over other acorns, and Q. coccifera acorns were avoided when other acorns were available. Preference for Q. faginea and Q. suber acorns was intermediate, that is, they were preferred over Q. coccifera acorns but not over Q. ilex acorns. Large acorns were also preferred although acorn species selection was stronger than size selection. Jays selected species and size both by visual means and by using acorn area as an indicator of size. Acorns wider than 17–19 mm were carried in the bill because of throat limitation. Our results confirm Bossema's study on temperate oaks and extend it to Mediterranean oak species, revealing implications on mixed oak forest dynamics.  相似文献

Cold hardiness in actively growing plants of Saxifraga caespitosaL., an arctic and subarctic cushion plant, was examined. Plantscollected from subarctic and arctic sites were cultivated ina phytotron at temperatures of 3, 9, 12 and 21 °C undera 24-h photoperiod, and examined for freezing tolerance usingcontrolled freezing at a cooling rate of 3–4 °C eitherin air or in moist sand. Post-freezing injury was assessed byvisual inspection and with chlorophyll fluorescence, which appearedto be well suited for the evaluation of injury in Saxifragaleaves. Freezing of excised leaves in moist sand distinguishedwell among the various treatments, but the differences werepartly masked by significant supercooling when the tissue wasfrozen in air. Excised leaves, meristems, stem tissue and flowerssupercooled to –9 to –15 °C, but in rosettesand in intact plants ice nucleation was initiated at –4to –7 °C. The arctic plants tended to be more coldhardy than the subarctic plants, but in plants from both locationscold hardiness increased significantly with decreasing growthtemperature. Plants grown at 12 °C or less developed resistanceto freezing, and excised leaves of arctic Saxifraga grown at3 °C survived temperatures down to about –20 °C.Exposure to –3 °C temperature for up to 5 d did notsignificantly enhance the hardiness obtained at 3 °C. Whenwhole plants of arctic Saxifraga were frozen, with roots protectedfrom freezing, they survived –15 °C and –25°C when cultivated at 12 and 3 °C, respectively, althougha high percentage of the leaves were killed. The basal levelof freezing tolerance maintained in these plants throughoutperiods of active growth may have adaptive significance in subarcticand arctic environments. Controlled environment experiments were performed to determinethe effects of temperature and water potential on germination, radicle elongation and emergence of mungbean (Vigna radiata(L.) Wilczek cv. IPB-M79-17-79). The effects of a range of constant temperatures (15–45°C) and water potentials (0 to –2.2 MPa) on germinationand radicle elongation rates were studied using an osmoticumtechnique, in which seeds were held against a semi-permeablemembrane sac containing a polyethylene glycol solution. Linearrelationships were established between median germination time(Gt50) and water potential at different temperatures, and betweenreciprocal Gt50 (germination rate) and temperature at differentwater potentials. Germination occurred at potentials as lowas –2.2 MPa at favourable temperatures (30–40 °C),but was fastest at 40 °C when water was not limiting, withan estimated base temperature (Tb) of about 10 °C. Subsequentradicle elongation, however, was restricted to a slightly narrowertemperature range and was fastest at 35 °C. The conceptof thermal time was used to develop an equation to model thecombined effects of water potential and temperature on germination.Predictions made using this model were compared with the actualgermination obtained in a related series of experiments in columnsof soil. Some differences observed suggested the additionalimportance of the seed/soil/water contact zone in influencingseed germination in soil. Seedling emergence appeared to reflectfurther the radicle elongation results by occurring within anarrower range of temperatures and water potentials than germination.Emergence had an estimated Tb of 12.6 °C and was fastestat 35 °C. A soil matric potential of not less than about–0.5 MPa at sowing was required to obtain 50% or moreseedling emergence. Key words: Germination, temperature, water potential  相似文献

Ion chromatographic methods determined organic acids and mainnutrient minerals in the apoplastic solution from leaves ofseveral Fagaceae (Quercus ilex L., Quercus cerris L., Quercusvirgiliana (Ten.) Ten, and Fagus sylvatica L.). The anions oforganic acids found in high amounts (250 to 650 µM) werequinate, malate, and oxalate. Lactate, pyruvate, formate andacetate were detected in relatively low amounts with concentrationsbetween 20 and 200 µM. The total concentration of organicacids in the apoplastic sap ranged between 1.5 and 2 mM. Thetotal concentration of inorganic cations (K+, Mg2+, NH4+, Ca2+,Na+) and anions (C1, NO3, SO2–4 and PO3–4)in the apoplastic sap varied between 5 and 10 mM, and 0.35 and1.8 mM, respectively. We conclude that the concentration oforganic acid ions in the leaf apoplast depends mainly on theexchange with the leaf cells and is influenced by the electrochemicalgradient between the symplast and the apoplast in relation tothe water potential of the leaf. The determination of formateand acetate in the apoplastic compartment of leaves lend weightto the argument that the production of these acids by treesis a important emission source to the atmosphere. The present study deals with structure and functioning of threeareas of Himalayan oak forest. Low- and mid-altitude oaks, namelyQuercus leucotrichophora, and Quercus floribunda, form predominantevergreen forests in Central and Western Himalaya. The totaltree basal cover ranged between 33·89 m2 ha–1 (Q.floribunda site) to 36·83 m2 ha–1 (Q. leucotrichophorasite). The density ranged between 570 and 760 individuals ha–1.Allometric equations relating biomass of different tree componentsto GBH (girth at breast height) were significant with the exceptionof leaf biomass in Q. leucotrichophora and Rhododendron arboreum.Total vegetation biomass (29·40–467·0 tha–1) was distributed as 377·1 t ha–1 intrees, 5·40 t ha–1 in shrubs and 1·23 tha–1 in herbs. Total forest floor biomass ranged between4·6 and 6·2 t ha–1. Of the total annuallitter fall (4·7–4·8 t ha–1), 77·5% was contributed by leaf litter, 17·8 % by wood litterand 4·7 % by miscellaneous litter. Turnover rate of treelitter varied from 0·66 to 0·70. Net primary productionof total vegetation ranged between 15·9 and 20·6t ha–1 yr–1, of which the contribution of trees, shrubs and herbs was 81·2 %, 8·6 % and 10·2%, respectively. A compartment model of dry matter on the basisof mean data across sites was developed to show dry matter storageand flow of dry matter within the system. Following acclimation to 5°, 15° or 25°C for 14days, samples of 30 Dreissena polymorpha (zebra mussels) andCorbicula fluminea (Asian clams) were held in either aerated(control) or extremely hypoxic N2 gassed water (PO2 < 3%of full air saturation). Mortality was negligible in all aeratedcontrols. Mean hypoxia tolerance in D. polymorpha ranged from3–4 days at 25°C to 38–42 days at 5°C. Hypoxiatolerance time of zebra mussels increased significantly withdeclining test temperature (P < 0.001) and increasing acclimationtemperature (P < 0.001). Larger zebra mussels were more tolerantthan smaller individuals. Asian clams were 2–7 times moretolerant of hypoxia than zebra mussels, surviving a mean of11.8 and 35.1 days at 25°C and 15°C, respectively, andwithout mortality for 84 days at 5°C, and were not influencedby temperature acclimation. At 25°C, larger specimens ofAsian clams were less tolerant of hypoxia than smaller individuals. Both species are amongst the least hypoxia tolerant freshwaterbivalve molluscs, reflecting their prevalence in well-oxygenatedshallow water habitats. Prolonged exposure to extreme hypoxiamay provide an efficacious control strategy, particularly forD. polymorpha (Received 12 January 1998; accepted 30 September 1998)  相似文献
