The effects of three cotton cultivars with low ('ZMZ13'), medium ('HZ401'), and high ('M9101') gossypol contents on the development, reproduction, and survival of Aphis gossypii Glover and its predator Propylaea japonica (Thunberg) were investigated. Developmental duration and immature survivorship did not vary between aphids on the three cultivars, whereas A. gossypii feeding on M9101 (high gossypol cultivar) displayed significantly shorter adult longevity and lower fecundity than aphids fed on 'ZMS13' and 'HZ401'. Free fatty acid content in cotton aphids reared on 'M9101' was greater than in those reared on 'HZ401' and 'ZMS13'. No significant differences in survival and lifetime fecundity of P. japonica were observed between P. japonica fed cotton aphids reared on the three different cultivars. P. japonica fed aphids from 'M9101' showed a significantly shorter developmental period and greater adult weight than those fed aphids from the other two cultivars. The decreased larval developmental duration and increased adult weight of P. japonica fed cotton aphids reared on the high gossypol-containing cultivar might have been caused by the high fatty acid content of the prey aphids. Our results indicate that high gossypol in host cotton had an antibiotic effect on A. gossypii and showed a positive effect on growth and development of P. japonica at the third trophic level. This suggests compatibility between one form of host plant resistance and biological control by predators. The allelochemical contents should be taken into account in integrated pest management for their effects on both herbivores and entomophagous insects.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The number of ovarioles and the potential fecundity in first (fundatrigenia) and second generation emigrants of Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) was investigated.
2. The relationships between weight and host quality on ovariole number were investigated.
3. The first generation of emigrants had a greater number of ovarioles and a higher fecundity than the second.
4. There was a positive relationship between ovariole number and weight.
5. The number of ovarioles and weight decreased with decreasing host quality.
6. The results do not agree with a recently proposed reproductive strategy of aphids where the number of ovarioles are supposed to be independent of weight and host quality.
7. In years with a high initial population on bird cherry, the migration to grasses, e.g. cereals, will be earlier, probably larger and, to a greater extent, consists of aphids which have a higher reproductive rate than in years with a small initial number on bird cherry.  相似文献

Summary Exploiters of short-lived plants have evolved strategies in response to physiological changes that occur during the development of their hosts. The ability to adapt to host quality changes is necessary particularly if the mobility of an animal is poor or risk-constrained. In the plant-aphid system Centaurea jaceae-Uroleucon jaceae, the responses of the aphid to the seasonal changes in its host plant grown in poor and good quality soil were investigated. Coarse- and fine-tuned physiological reactions were observed in discrete aphid generations which were reared on plants grown either in a growth chamber or in a greenhouse. The number of ovarioles and developmental time depended on extrinsic factors (length of photoperiod) not directly related to plant quality. The reproductive investment of the aphids was also independent of their total dry weight. However, within the gonadal system high correlations were found at the embryonic level (e.g. the number of sclerotized embryos or the length of the oldest embryos per ovariole were highly correlated with gonadal dry weight). Aphids which were living on the 4-leaf stage of high-quality host plants showed a significantly higher investment in their gonads than aphids feeding on senescenting hosts. Factor analysis corroborated that aphids reared on poor-quality hosts revealed no grouping of variables measured, whereas those which were reared on high-quality plants showed clustering in respect of somatic (tibia length, dry weight of soma) and gonadal (number of sclerotized and unsclerotized embryos, length of the oldest embryos, ovariole number, gonad dry weight) factors. Three different levels of adaptive response to plant quality are distinguished: individual response to host quality, maternal influences on offspring and response to changes not specific to habitat (photoperiod). These different levels of regulation are thought to enable the aphids to adapt to a host of a given nutritional quality and anticipate deteriorating habitat quality simultaneously. It is concluded that physiological constraints in aphids are only revealed when aphids are exposed to severe nutritional stress for several generations.  相似文献

Mountain pine beetles from lodgepole and limber pine in western Canada were crossbred. We compared data about reproductive success and fecundity of parents as well as development, mortality, and fertility of their progeny to determine whether there was reproductive isolation among beetle populations in these hosts. Three factors, directly or indirectly related to the host, influenced reproductive performance of parents (reproductive success, egg gallery length, fecundity, and number of eggs laid per centimeter of gallery) as well as the mortality, dry weight, and fat content of the progeny: (1) the host species in which progeny were reared, (2) the host species in which the female parent was reared, and (3) whether both parents originated from the same or different host species. Limber pine appears to be a better host for Dendroctonus ponderosae reproduction and survival than lodgepole pine. Nonetheless, beetles reared from lodgepole and limber pine can reproduce in either host and will mate with each other. Progeny of all crosses were fertile. Thus, there is no apparent barrier to prevent beetles from the two host species from interbreeding in the field.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Direct observations of Aphidius colemani foraging for Aphis glycines demonstrated that A. colemani attacks large aphid size classes selectively, in contrast to other Aphidiinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) species that generally prefer small or medium-sized nymphs of different host species.
2. To determine the effect of this size preference on the potential ability of A. colemani to control A. glycines outbreaks, the stage-dependent survival and fecundity of A. glycines were measured to parameterise a stage-structured demographic model for the density-independent population growth rate of the aphid.
3. Compared with hypothetical parasitoids that show either no size preference or preference for medium-sized host nymphs, the preference of A. colemani for large hosts caused a greater reduction in the population growth rate of A. glycines . This occurs in the model because, by attacking reproductive adults, A. colemani kills those aphids that have the greatest immediate effect on the population growth rate.
4. The strong effect of size preference by A. colemani is diminished somewhat by the continued reproduction of A. glycines adults, which can reproduce for up to 3 days following parasitism. Nonetheless, reproduction by parasitised aphids is not enough to compensate for the stronger, negative effect of the preference of A. colemani for large aphids, which removes individuals with the greatest reproductive value from the A. glycines population.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Transgenic crops have shown great promise for the control of target pest insects, but in some cases they can also influence non-target species. This study investigated the impact of Bt and Bt+CpTI transgenic cottons on the non-target cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, by comparing life-table parameters, feeding behaviour, and the fluctuating asymmetry of morphological traits of aphids reared on transgenic cotton and those on untransformed control plants.
2. Aphids on the Bt+CpTI cotton showed a shorter reproductive duration and maximum lifespan, lower survival rates and potential maximum fecundity, and an earlier occurrence of peak daily mortality in the first or second generation. However, the aphid population soon developed fitness and overcame the negative effect in the second or third generation. The aphids on the Bt cotton had significantly longer reproductive durations in the first generation, higher survival rates in the third generation, and apparently larger potential maximum fecundity in all three generations.
3. The percentages of accumulated duration of feeding waveforms E1 and E2 were significantly lower in aphids on the Bt+CpTI cotton than in those on the Bt or control cotton, whereas the frequencies of moving and finding feeding sites, and probe behaviour were significantly higher.
4. Fluctuating asymmetry in three morphological characters of aphids reared on transgenic and control cotton was detected. The fluctuating asymmetry value of the third segment of antenna in aphids on Bt+CpTI cotton was significantly higher than that of aphids on Bt or control cotton. Based on the fluctuating asymmetry value, the stress of cotton on the aphids could be ranked as Bt+CpTI cotton > Bt cotton > control cotton.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Reciprocal transfer experiments were undertaken using four different hosts to examine the effects of a change in host at adult moult on the probing behaviour of the cowpea aphid Aphis craccivora Koch.
2. The highest intrinsic rate of increase r m was achieved by aphids born and reared on cowpea, followed by those born and reared on broad bean, then Larissa, and finally Huia.
3. Mean probing time, time to first probe, number of probes per time allocation, and non-probing time were all examined. Host quality r m did not affect the instantaneous probability of probing, and aphids that did not find a probing site within 200 s did not settle and did not probe further on that leaf/stem.  相似文献

The reproduction of apterous and alate morphs of the aphids Sitobion avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum is compared on the basis of fecundity in 5- and 10-day periods of adult life. Apterae of both species are consistently more fecund than alatae of comparable weight, producing about three more nymphs on average in any 5-day period. The reproductive differences are related to the number and quality of embryos at eclosion and to ovulation rates, both of which in turn appear to be linked to wing-muscle maintenance. These relationships between weight, embryos and reproduction may be used to predict a newly moulted adult aphid's fecundity, a method which may facilitate the assessment of resistance to aphids in new cereal varieties, by obviating lengthy recording of reproduction. The strategies by which alatae of these and other aphid species minimize the difference between their fecundity and that of apterae are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. When first instar nymphs and adults of the grain aphid Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Aphidiae) were maintained in long-term cultures (>6 months) at 20 °C and 10 °C, the LT50 decreased from −8 and −8.8 °C to −16.0 and −13.5 °C, respectively.
2. When aphids from the 20 °C culture were transferred to 10 °C, there was a progressive increase in cold tolerance through three successive generations. Transfer of newly moulted pre-reproductive adults reared at 10 °C for three generations back to 20 °C resulted in a rapid loss of cold hardiness in their nymphal offspring.
3. In all generations reared at 10 °C, first born nymphs were more cold hardy than those born later in the birth sequence. The LT50 of nymphs produced on the first day of reproduction in the first, second and third generations maintained at 10 °C were −14.8, −17.0 and −16.6 °C, respectively. Thereafter, nymphal cold hardiness decreased over the subsequent 14 days of reproduction in each generation at 10 °C with mean LT50 values of −10.3, −12.6 and −14.8 °C, respectively. By contrast, the cold tolerance of first born nymphs of aphids reared continuously at 20 °C did not differ in comparison with later born siblings. The LT50 of adult aphids was also unaffected by ageing.
4. The ecological relevance of these findings is discussed in relation to the overwintering survival of aphids such as S. avenae .  相似文献

Variation in the life history traits of cotton aphids, Aphis gossypii Glover, reared on four widely distributed weeds, Ageratum houstonianum Mill., Bidens pilosa L. var. radiata Sch. Bip., Solanum nigrum L. and Spermacoce latifolia Aubl., were investigated. Cotton aphids were reared in the laboratory at 25°C. Each host plant had a distinct effect on aphid life history traits. Cotton aphids reared on S. nigrum had a significantly shorter developmental period, and age-specific fecundity peaked early. In contrast, cotton aphids reared on S. latifolia had a long developmental period and low age-specific fecundity. Cotton aphids that fed on B. pilosa and A. houstonianum displayed intermediate rates of growth and age-specific fecundity. Because the curves of age-specific fecundity ( mx ) and age-specific net maternity ( lx  m x ) on each host plant were close together, development time and the pattern of age-specific fecundity were the major factors determining the population growth potential of the cotton aphid on each weed. As a result, the intrinsic rate of population growth for aphids reared on S. nigrum was significantly higher ( rm =0.527 ± 0.011) than it was for aphids reared on S. latifolia ( rm =0.194 ± 0.012).  相似文献

Abstract. To determine patterns of resource allocation among ascidians, we studied 16 colonial and solitary species. We measured investment in reproductive vs. structural material (tunic) both in terms of weight and caloric content, as well as fecundity and degree of larval complexity in the colonial species. Measurements in weight and caloric content were highly correlated in the species studied. A wide range of investment in reproduction was found. Tunic production was related to the growth form of the species, stolonic and solitary species investing less in tunic than massive species, but no significant relationship was found between investment in tunic production vs. reproduction. In colonial species we found that in species with small zooid size, the reproductive investment per zooid was significantly higher. There was a significant negative relationship between investment in reproduction and fecundity. We also found a significant relationship between reproductive investment and larval complexity. The overall trend was that species with low fecundity had large complex larvae and invested the most energy in reproduction.  相似文献

Influence of different physiological stages (young, mature and senescent) of Calotropis gigantea leaves on growth and reproductive ability of A. nerii and feeding, prey utilization, fecundity and lipid content of its predator M. sexmaculatus were investigated. Increased reproductive period, total life span and reproduction of nymphs per female of A. nerii were observed when reared on mature leaves. This relative preference of A. nerii and maximum utilization of mature leaves as compared to other physiological aged leaves are mainly due to changes in the chemical composition such as protein, carbohydrate, lipid, amino acid, nitrogen and phenolic of C. gigantea. Further, aphids reared on mature leaves influenced its predator's (M. sexmaculatus) growth, prey utilization and reproductive performances. Fecundity and longevity were high, while developmental time of predator was shorter on mature leaves fed aphid. Maximum prey utilization and increased efficiency of ingested and digested food of predator was observed on mature leaves reared aphid. The results are interpreted and discussed in relation to plant aphid and predator interaction (tritrophic).  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Reproductive costs associated with flight capability were evaluated in the wing dimorphic planthopper, Prokelisia dolus Wilson, by comparing the life history of traits of winged (macropterous) and flightless (brachypterous) females under controlled laboratory conditions.
2. Macropters with large thoraces and fully developed wings maintain a greater investment in flight apparatus than brachypters with small thoraces and reduced wings.
3. Associated with greater flight capability in the macropter of P.dolus are shorter adult life, decreased total fecundity, and delayed age at first reproduction compared to brachypterous females.
4. Under field conditions where mortality is high, the difference in realized fecundity between the two wing forms living on similar resources is further exaggerated with the brachypter having the greater advantage.
5. When the life history traits of the wing forms of P. dolus are compared with traits for nine other species of planthoppers, two similarities emerge. First, the preoviposition period of the macropterous wing form is always longer than that for the brachypter resulting in a reproductive delay. Second, most studies show that macropters are less fecund than brachypters.
6. There is no general tendency among planthopper species for macropterous adults to live fewer days or develop more slowly as nymphs compared to their flightless counterparts.
7. The reproductive delay and reduced fecundity of the volent wing form of planthoppers supports the notion that flight capability is costly and that phenotypic trade-offs between flight and reproduction exist.  相似文献

First instar nymphs and adults of the grain aphid Sirobion auenae that had been reared at 10°C and 20°C over a number of generations, were cooled to -5°C and -10°C for 1 h and 6 h and returned to 20°C to assess the effects of brief exposures to low temperatures (cold-pulses) on their survival. rate of development, longevity and fecundity. A strong acclimation response was observed in first instar nymphs, with significantly less mortality in groups reared to 10°C compared to 20°C. Mean development time from first instar to adult was not significantly affected by low temperature exposure at the first nymphal stage. Longevity in all groups cooled as first instars was reduced by the sub-zero cold-pulses, and was also dependent on temperature and exposure time. Acclimated aphids survived longer than non-acclimated individuals. Reproductive rate, in terms of the number of nymphs born per aphid per day, was unaffected by cold stress applied at the first instar stage. Total fecundity was however reduced, being a function of the number and longevity of the survivors. Adult aphids were less cold hardy than nymphs; mortality was higher at -10°C than -5°C increasing with duration of exposure from 1 h to 6 h. Mean fecundity was reduced significantly in aphids cooled at the adult stage, the number of aphids born per day decreasing as the exposure period of the cold-pulse increased, suggesting that low temperature had affected embryogenesis. All the nymphs born to adults surviving exposure to -5°C for 6 h died within 48 h of birth, indicating that low temperature has a pre-natal effect on mortality.  相似文献

The effects of two bacterial endosymbionts, designated PASS and PAR, were evaluated on the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) (Hemiptera:Aphididae), in which they occur facultatively, and on the blue alfalfa aphid, A. kondoi Shinji, in which these bacteria have not been found in natural populations. Subclones of pea aphids and blue alfalfa aphids, derived from parent aphid clones that did not contain PASS or PAR, were infected with one or both bacteria, generating PASS- and/or PAR-positive subclones with minimal genetic differences from the parent clones. Under laboratory conditions at 20 °C, PAR consistently reduced the fecundity (by between 19 and 60%) of subclones derived from three different parent pea aphid clones on bur clover, Medicago hispida Gaertn. PAR had intermediate effects on pea aphids reared on sweet pea, Lathyrus odoratus L., and had no significant effect on pea aphids on alfalfa, Medicago sativa L. The effect of PASS was either neutral or negative, depending on parent clone as well as host plant. Also at 20 °C, PASS reduced fecundity (70–77%) and longevity (40–48%), and increased the age of first reproduction (by up to 1.5 days) of blue alfalfa aphid reared on alfalfa and clover. PAR had a less dramatic effect (e.g., 30–39% reduction in fecundity) on these traits of blue alfalfa aphid. In contrast, PAR and PASS increased the fitness of pea aphid subclones of one parent clone reared for three generations at 25 °C on each of the three test plants. Without facultative bacteria, fecundity of the parent clone was reduced to a mean total of < 6 offspring per adult at this elevated temperature, but with PASS or PAR, mean total fecundity of its subclones was > 35. However, this ameliorative effect of facultative bacteria at 25 °C was not found for two other sets of parent clones and their derived subclones. Alate production in pea aphids was significantly increased in large populations of two PASS- and PAR-positive subclones relative to their parent clones. Attempts to transmit PASS or PAR horizontally, i.e., from aphid to aphid via feeding on host plants (bur clover), were unsuccessful.  相似文献

Myzus persicae transferred to rape produced offspring with higher survival, larger weight and faster development than aphids transferred to beet, irrespective of whether they had been reared on rape or beet. Aphids transferred from rape to beet produced fewer offspring than those reared continuously on rape. On beet, rape-reared adults produced progeny with lower survival, slower development, smaller adult size and lower fecundity than the progeny of beet-reared individuals, but there were no differences in these characteristics associated with host plant after one generation. Aphids from rape were less than half as efficient in transmitting beet yellows virus as aphids reared continuously on beet but after one subsequent generation on beet this difference had disappeared completely. These results are discussed in relation to field conditions.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Larval rearing densities of Hemipyrellia ligurriens (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in standardized carrion were manipulated in order to investigate changes in life-history parameters in response to larval competition for food.
2. Competition was of the typical scramble type. Survivorship remained high at densities up to 32 larvae g liver-1 but decreased rapidly as larval density increased further.
3. Emergent adults were undersized with reduced fecundity and longevity. Variations in adult body size apparently reduced the effects of competition on larval mortality.
4. Females of dry weight corresponding to only 10.4% of the potential maximum emerged at the highest rearing densities of 128 larvae g liver-1. However, these females had a nearly four-fold increase in reproductive investment (per unit weight) when compared to the largest individuals.
5. The duration of larval development declined when competition was intense (i.e. at high larval densities).
6. The short adult life of H.ligurriens, combined with the unpredictability of larval habitat availability, may reduce the value of long-range dispersal so that females 'do better' by maintaining reproductive investment despite a concomitant decline in dispersal ability.  相似文献

Summary In the wing dimorphic milkweed-oleander aphid,Aphis nerii, winged aphids begin reproducing about 1.5 days after wingless aphids. The longer maturation period is primarily due to slower development since even adult eclosion by winged aphids takes place after wingless aphids begin reproducing. The delay is not due to a post-eclosion, pre-reproductive flight since, beginning with the fourth instar, larval winged aphids were reared at a density of one per plant and the vast majority were not stimulated to fly under such low-density conditions. Thus, the ability to fly incurs a fitness cost in terms of delayed reproduction, irrespective of whether flight actually occurs. We did not observe a difference between morphs for lifetime fecundity, even though wingless aphids have larger abdomens than winged aphids and for both morphs there is a significant correlation between abdomen width and fecundity. Offspring produced by wingless aphids over the first four days of reproduction are larger than those produced by winged aphids, and the size difference at birth is maintained into adulthood. However, there are no differences in life history traits between these offspring, including maturation period and lifetime fecundity. Thus, reduced body size does not increase the cost of being able to fly, at least under the conditions of these experiments. The cost of being able to fly in this species should favor reduced production of winged individuals in populations that exploit more permanent host plants.  相似文献

We determined the age-specific fecundity and survival of the solitary parasstoid wasp,Aphidius ervi Haliday (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae), under constant laboratory conditions. Wasps were reared in each of the four nymphal instars of apterous pea aphids,Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) (Homoptera: Aphididae): L1 (age 24h), L2 (48 h), L3 (72 h), and L4 (120 h). Age-specific survival (lx) and fecundity (mx) differed between parasitoids developing in different aphid instars. The wasps’ life-time reproductive success, as indexed by the intrinsic rate of population increase (rm), varied non-linearly with adult biomass and host size at parasitization. A close agreement between larval growth rates in different host instars and adult reproductive performance suggests that, inA. ervi, fitness correlates may be significantly influenced by larval ontogeny and trade-offs in resource allocation.  相似文献
