Three cases of xylene poisoning occurred after prolonged inhalation of paint fumes. Analysis showed that xylene comprised more than 90% of the solvent in the paint, the total solvent comprising 34% of the paint by weight. One patient was dead on admission, while the other two recovered after at least 15 hours'' loss of consciousness. Both patients had transient liver cell damage, and one temporary impairment of renal function.  相似文献

Cellulose ether polymers are widely used by the paint industry as thickening agents for waterborne paints and any reductions in the degree of polymerisation of these polymers will result in the loss of paint viscosity (paint thinning). Two main mechanisms of waterborne paint thinning are discussed: contamination of paint by microbial cellulolytic enzymes and an excess of oxidising and reducing agents. Different ways of preventing and controlling paint viscosity loss caused by these mechanisms are discussed and evaluated.  相似文献

We have previously reported the use of six- and seven-color paint sets in the analysis of canine soft tissue sarcomas. Here we combine this technique with flow sorting of translocation chromosomes, reverse painting, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of the gene content of the reverse paint in order to provide a more detailed analysis of cytogenetic abnormalities in canine tumors. We examine two fibrosarcomas, both from female Labrador retrievers, and show abnormalities in chromosomes 11 and 30 in both cases. Evidence of involvement of TGFBR1 is presented for one tumor.  相似文献

Latex paint is commonly used by professional and consumer painters. Potential inhalation exposure to chemical vapors from paint has been studied extensively. Potential dermal exposure is not as well studied and existing exposure evaluation methods assume the paint remains wet for the duration of skin contact. However, latex paint may dry quickly and this limits the bioavailability of paint constituents due to the decreased diffusion through a dry film. This study presents a tiered in silico (i.e., computer modeling) approach to evaluate potential dermal exposure to nonvolatile substances using a technique that begins with exposure to a wet paint film and transitions to a dry film. Experiments were performed to help quantify a key parameter, latex paint drying time, and the experimental results were used in a case study to demonstrate the tiered approach. The predicted dermal penetration ranged from 100% of the applied substance for a simple conservative approach to 5% of the applied substance for the refined wet/dry film approach. Assuming the paint film was partially wiped further reduced the predicted penetration to 2%. This study addresses only latex paint but the tiered approach could be modified to evaluate other products.  相似文献

A three-stage chemostat containing a mixed consortium of microorganisms, includingLegionella pneumophila, was used to determine the suitability of a silver-containing paint to control biofouling in water systems. The paint was efficient in controlling total surface colonisation by heterotrophic microorganisms and growth of the pathogen over a 2-week period. Biodiversity was limited in the presence of the silver paint and this was thought to help controlL. pneumophila numbers. Glass control tiles suspended alongside the silver painted tiles also had reduced colonisation for the 2-week period, suggesting that low levels of silver leached from the paint surface. This loss of silver was confirmed since the inhibition of biofouling and inclusion of the pathogen was not maintained after the 2-week period. Although this paint was unsuitable for controlling biofouling over extended time periods, the data suggest that a reformulated paint or electrochemical method of introducing silver ions may be successful.  相似文献

Microorganisms growing on painted surfaces are not only an aesthetic problem, but also actively contribute to the weathering and deterioration of materials. A widely used strategy to combat microbial colonization is the addition of biocides to the paint. However, ecotoxic, non-degradable biocides with a broad protection range are now prohibited in Europe, so the paint industry is considering engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) as an alternative biocide. There is concern that ENPs in paint might be released in run-off water and subsequently consumed by animals and/or humans, potentially coming into contact with cells of the gastrointestinal tract and affecting the immune system. Therefore, in the present study we evaluated the cytotoxic effects of three ENPs (nanosilver, nanotitanium dioxide and nanosilicon dioxide) that have a realistic potential for use in paints in the near future. When exposed to nanotitanium dioxide and nanosilicon dioxide in concentrations up to 243 µg/mL for 48 h, neither the gastrointestinal cells (CaCo-2) nor immune system cells (Jurkat) were significantly affected. However, when exposed to nanosilver, several cell parameters were affected, but far less than by silver ions used as a control. No differences in cytotoxicity were observed when cells were exposed to ENP-containing paint particles, compared with the same paint particles without ENPs. Paint particles containing ENPs did not affect cell morphology, the release of reactive oxygen species or cytokines, cell activity or cell death in a different manner to the same paint particles without ENPs. The results suggest that paints doped with ENPs do not pose an additional acute health hazard for humans.  相似文献

In order to better understand the relative importance of various sources of lead in childhood lead poisoning, high-precision, isotoperatio, solid-source-mass spectrometry of microgram-sized lead samples was applied to three hospitalized cases in Boston, ranging in age from 1.5 to 14 yr, that had blood-lead levels of 0.7–1.2 μg/g. The lead isotopes in the ambient Boston environment (air, soil, and dust) were also measured. In each case, the isotopic composition (IC) of the child's blood lead was identical with the IC of lead paint taken from the child's residence at a site accessible to the child. Fecal lead samples were also identical to that particular paint. Soil lead IC did not always match the IC of local paints. Paint samples vary widely in their IC's (206/204=17.5–19.4, about 200 times analytical reliability). Dust in homes that never had lead paint contained lead that resembled lead in urban soils. Dust lead IC did not necessarily have the same IC as current automobile lead emissions, but appeared to reflect the long-term accumulation of several sources of urban lead fallout. Limitations and implications of this data are discussed.  相似文献

10, 10'-Oxybisphenoxarsine has been found to be outstanding in its activity against bacteria and fungi. Parallel tests with known fungistats for comparison (2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol and phenylmercuric acetate) have demonstrated its superior activity and persistence in an exterior acrylate paint film and in an asphalt coating. In view of its superior antimicrobial activity and its persistence, it can be used in applications in which there is no danger of its ingestion. Further field trials are in progress to evaluate 10, 10'oxybisphenoxarsine in paint, asphalt, wood, and in marine pilings.  相似文献

Satin bowerbirds Ptilonorhynchus violaceus have an elaborate multi-component sexual display, some components of which have been extensively studied. We describe a relatively unstudied component of this display, bower painting, and birds' responses to manipulations of their paint. Males of this species focus their display around a stick bower constructed on the forest floor which they decorate with a variety of objects and paint. Painting involves a male masticating plant material and wiping the plant-saliva mixture onto the inside walls of the bower; during courtship visits to bowers, females nibble at this paint. We found that 93% of 53 males painted their bowers at our study site and the time males spent painting their bowers accounted for 24% of their time at the bower. We experimentally removed and added paint to bowers to test whether males respond to these changes in their paint. Males gave more advertisement calls and spent less time manipulating sticks at the bower when we added fresh wet paint to their bowers compared to older dried paint or a control treatment. They did not respond to the removal of paint from their bowers, perhaps because it was primarily older dried paint that was removed. We also found that males painted more frequently when there was measurable wind in their bowers, which could have degraded the quality of the signal. Our findings indicate that fresh wet paint is more important to males than older dried paint and, together with previous work at this site, suggest that paint may act as a signal to females. Given that females nibble bower sticks during courtship, we suggest that bower paint may function as a chemical sexual signal rather than a visual signal.  相似文献

Benzyladenine (BA) and/or gibberellic acid (GA3) were applied in 20% white exterior latex paint separately at 0, 0.3, 1, 3, 10, or 30 mM; and at 1, 10, or 30 mM of each plant growth regulator (PGR) in a 3 × 3 factorial to 40 cm long stem segments of Acer saccharinum L. Softwood shoots were forced from these stem segments at various times of the year in a greenhouse and in a laboratory, these resulting shoots were surface disinfested and used as explants in vitro on Driver and Kuniyuki Walnut medium with 0 or 0.01 μM thidiazuron (TDZ). There was some response to the plant growth regulators applied in paint for shoot production from the stem segments and in vitro. Explants from softwood shoots forced from stems painted with 3 mM BA and cultured on medium with 0.01 μM TDZ produced more shoots than explants taken from softwood shoots forced with other BA concentrations or controls. Callus also grew significantly more on explants from stems treated with 3 mM BA cultured on 0.01 μM TDZ than explants harvested from stems painted with other concentrations of BA excluding 10 mM BA. When stem segments treated with BA plus GA3 were compared as a group to controls, more and longer softwood shoots grew on the stems painted with PGRs when all four runs were pooled (Sept. 2005 through Feb. 2006). Application of PGRs in paint extends the season of production of softwood shoots that may be used as explant materials and their subsequent performance in vitro.  相似文献

AcT (perhydrolase) containing paint composites were prepared leading to broad-spectrum decontamination. AcT was immobilized onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and then incorporated into latex-based paints to form catalytic coatings. These AcT-based paint composites showed a 6-log reduction in the viability of spores of Bacillus cereus and Bacillus anthracis (Sterne) within 60 min. The paint composites also showed >4-log reduction in the titer of influenza virus (X-31) within 10 min (initially challenged with 107 PFU/mL). AcT-based paint composites were also tested using various perhydrolase acyl donor substrates, including propylene glycol diacetate (PGD), glyceryl triacetate, and ethyl acetate, with PGD observed to be the best among the substrates tested for generation of peracetic acid and killing of bacillus spores. The operational stability of paint composites was also studied at different relative humidities and temperatures to simulate real-life operation.  相似文献

In this field investigation the two cyclopeptides, isolated from the marine sponge Geodia barretti Bowerbank (Geodiidae, Astrophorida), are shown to be very efficient in preventing recruitment of the barnacle Balanus improvisus (Cirripedia, Crustacea) and the blue mussel Mytilis edulis (Protobranchia, Lamellibranchia) when included in different marine paints. These brominated cyclopeptides, named barettin and 8,9-dihydrobarettin were incorporated in different non-toxic coatings. The substances were used in the concentrations 0.1 and 0.01% in all treatments. The most efficient paint was a SPC polymer. This paint, in combination with barettin and 8,9-dihydrobarettin, reduced the recruitment of B. improvisus by 89% (barettin, 0.1%) and by 67% (8,9-dihydrobarettin, 0.1%) as compared to control panels. For M. edulis, the reduction of recruitment was 81% with barettin (0.1%) and 72% with 8,9-dihydrobarettin (0.1%) included in the SPC paint. This indicates that the two compounds from G. barretti could provide non-toxic alternatives as additives in antifouling paints, since the heavy metal-based marine paints are to be replaced.  相似文献

Abstract

Environmental dust lead and other lead measures were highly intercorrelated for the wide range of housing in the Cincinnati prospective study. The causal pathway revealed by the data (soil and paint lead to surface dust lead to hand lead to blood lead) has been used to develop intervention strategies to reduce blood lead and hand lead levels which are currently being implemented in the Cincinnati Soil Lead Abatement Demonstration Project. These interventions, soil lead abatement, exterior dust abatement, and interior dust abatement, are being applied in various combinations in an examination of data for children residing in a single type of housing from birth, blood lead levels were compared according to three paint lead categories (low: < 2 mg cm?2; medium: 2.1 to 6.0 mg cm?2, and high: > 6.0mg cm?2). Geometric mean blood lead values were 14.1 and 12.1 μg dL?1, respectively, for the low and medium paint lead categories and much greater for children living in housing in the highest paint lead category, 24.8 μg dL?1. These data suggest that for situations similar to those in Cincinnati, priority for lead-based paint abatement should be considered for the housing with paint lead above 6 mg cm?2. A Ln—Ln relationship between environmental lead and blood lead for children in the Cincinnati study was found to represent the data much more closely than did a linear relationship such as that used in the current US EPA Lead Uptake/Biokinetic Model.  相似文献

Nitrocellulose is one of the most commonly used compounds in ammunition and paint industries and its recalcitrance to degradation has a negative impact on human health and the environment. In this study the capability of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans ATCC 13541 to degrade nitrocellulose as binder in paint was assayed for the first time. Nitrocellulose-based paint degradation was followed by monitoring the variation in nitrate, nitrite and ammonium content in the culture medium using Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy. At the same time cell counts and ATP assay were performed to estimate bacterial density and activity in all samples. Infrared spectroscopy and colorimetric measurements of paint samples were performed to assess chemical and colour changes due to the microbial action. Microscope observations of nitrocellulose-based paint samples demonstrated the capability of the bacterium to adhere to the paint surface and change the paint adhesive characteristics. Finally, preliminary studies of nitrocellulose degradation pathway were conducted by assaying nitrate- and nitrite reductases activity in D.?desulfuricans grown in presence or in absence of paint. We found that D.?desulfuricans ATCC 13541 is able to transform nitrocellulose as paint binder and we hypothesised ammonification as degradation pathway. The results suggest that D.?desulfuricans ATCC 13541 is a good candidate as a nitrocellulose-degrading bacterium.  相似文献

目的 探讨氧化酶和尿素酶对幽门螺杆菌(HP)感染的检出率和鉴别诊断。方法 采用氧化酶和尿素酶和涂片对1738例胃病患者进行HP检测。结果 1738例中氧化酶试验、尿素酶试验试验阳性检出率分别为47.41%、89.99%,阳性预测值为89.76%,阴性预测值为95.3%;尿毒酶试验的敏感性为99.72%,特异性为96.02%,阳性预浊值为95.36%,阴性预测值为9.76%,两者相比较各个参数间均无明显差(P>0.05)。结论 氧化酶试验和尿毒酶试验一样对检测HP快速有效,两者联合应用可提供对HP感染诊断和鉴别诊断的准确性。  相似文献

We report on a 16-month-old boy presenting with psychomotor retardation, craniofacial anomalies and severe vision deficit. Analysis of GTG-banded chromosomes showed that the patient had extra chromosomal material in the long arm of one chromosome 20. This chromosome aberration was further characterized with FISH using a chromosome 20 specific paint and band-specific probes. A partial trisomy 20q was shown to be present, the karyotype being 46, XY, dup (20) (q11.2q12). The cytogenetic and clinical findings are compared with cases previously reported in the literature.  相似文献

We report here two cases of trisomy 13 in acute myeloid leukemia M1 subtype. short-term unstimulated bone marrow and peripheral blood lymphocyte culture showed 47, XY, +13 in all metaphase plates and trisomy 13 was confirmed with whole chromosome paint probes. Trisomy 13 in AML-M1 is a rare numerical abnormality. This is the first Indian report of sole trisomy 13 in AML-M1. Here, we present two cases of elder male patients, which may constitute a distinct subtype.  相似文献
