Studies involving substantially lengthy rat surgeries require extended anesthesia periods and often involve use of sodium pentobarbital (PENT). Results of previous experiments from our laboratory and elsewhere suggest that the duration of anesthesia and the need for anesthetic supplementation may differ between male and female rats. In the study reported here, we induced anesthesia in male and female Sprague Dawley rats (n = 10 for each sex), using a three-step procedure: brief induction with 5% isoflurane inhalation, PENT (50 mg/kg of body weight, i.p.), combined with 50 mg of PENT/kg given intragastrically. Adequate anesthesia depth was confirmed by absence of a response to a toe pinch. Plasma PENT concentration was measured at sequential 20-min periods and was found, on average, to be lower (P = 0.03) in male (13.28 +/- 1.13 microg/ml) than in female (20.27 +/- 0.66 microg/ml) rats, and decreased more rapidly (P = 0.003) in male rats. Distribution to a fractionally greater lean body mass and more rapid metabolism in males may account for these differences and explain the need for anesthetic supplementation in male, but not female rats. 相似文献

Sex differences in the brain are real and clinically important but often grossly distorted in popular discourse. Considering the public's deep fascination with sex difference research and its impact on issues from mental health to education and workplace equity, neuroscientists should pay greater heed to its misappropriation and to studying how gender enculturation shapes neural function. 相似文献

Early in development, steroid hormones structurally organize various regions of the CNS. However, steroid hormones continue to affect the structure and function of the CNS throughout the life of the individual. In this review, we discuss sex differences and similarities in steroid-induced synaptic plasticity in the adult brain. Particular emphasis is placed on steroid-induced plasticity in the hippocampus, a brain region important in learning and memory. This topic is relevant to the growing evidence for the actions of sex hormones outside of the reproductive neuroendocrine axis. It also tells an important and emerging story about non-genomic and genomic actions of steroids at the cellular and molecular levels. Specifically, the effects of estrogen and progesterone as well as the androgens and glucocorticoids are discussed. The influence of steroids on hippocampal structure and function can differ vastly between the sexes. However, there are certain similarities that might aid in our understanding of how steroids affect CNS plasticity in general. Although future studies will undoubtedly lead us to a greater understanding of these phenomena, the data reviewed indicate that when studying synaptic plasticity, the sex and hormonal milieu of the individual might significantly influence the outcome and interpretation of the research. 相似文献

Although genetic factors are recognised as major contributors to otitis media, the presence of sex differences in heritability needs clarification. The aim of this study was to estimate the relative contribution of genetic and environmental effects in otitis media liability with particular focus on sex differences. Data from a cohort of Norwegian twins born between 1967 and 1979 with repeated measures on recurrent childhood otitis media were analysed. Altogether the sample included 4247 twin pairs. The tetrachoric correlations for monozygotic twins were .71 and .65 for males and females respectively. In dizygotic twins the correlations were .35 and .25 for males and females, respectively, and was.34 in opposite sexed pairs. The contribution of genetic and environmental effects was analyzed using structural equation modeling. The best fitting model showed that additive genetic effects explained 72% and 61% of the variance in males and females, respectively. The remaining variance was attributed to individual environmental effects. A model specifying equal heritability estimates for males and females yielded an almost equivalent fit. We found substantial genetic effects for liability to otitis media. There is no evidence that different sets of genes influence liability in males and females, but there may be sex differences in the relative importance of genetic effects. 相似文献

Studies on 2d:4d, the ratio between the second and the fourth digit, as a possible indicator of prenatal androgen exposure, have failed to produce consistent results. This paper analyzes the relation between 2d:4d, sex steroids and well-documented sex differences in characteristics such as depression, dominance, and aggressive (ART) and non-aggressive adolescent risk-taking (NART) in a comparatively large sample of adolescent boys (N = 301, mean age: 14.4 years) and girls (N = 298, mean age: 14.3 years). Boys had on average a lower 2d:4d than girls (F = 42.15; p < 0.001). With respect to boys, controlling for age and pubertal development (PD), a small but marginally significant positive association was found between 2d:4d and total testosterone (TT) (r = 0.11; p < 0.05). In girls a significant association was found between 2d:4d and SHBG (r = 0.18; p < 0.01). However, relationships between 2d:4d and hormones depended on the phase of the menstrual cycle, with 2d:4d being negatively associated with FT (B = − 0.013; p < 0.05) once a positive association between 2d:4d and FT for girls in the mid-cycle group (B = 0.019; p < 0.01) is taken into account. With respect to sex differences in characteristics, we found evidence of a relationship between 2d:4d and depression in boys (r = − 0.14; p < 0.05) but not between 2d:4d and dominance, ART or NART. No relationships were found between 2d:4d and any of these variables in girls. 相似文献

Sex biases in immunity have generated much interest because of their possible connection with sex differences in reproductive strategies. Researchers have often argued that males should invest less in immunity than should females. In a recent paper, Stoehr and Kokko challenge this reasonably substantiated view of 'susceptible males'. Their model, and another by Medley, helps highlight relevant tests that could explain other important sources of within-species variation in immunity and its importance to parasitism. 相似文献

Several studies have reported sex differences in the relation between early experience and later pair formation. These differences are usually ascribed to sex differences in ‘imprintability’. This interpretation has given rise to various functional explanations. In this article the evidence for both the existence of sex differences in imprintability (i.e. learning of plumage characteristics during juvenile life) and the functional explanations of these differences are critically examined. It is concluded that the existence of sex differences in imprintability has not been proved. Recent studies indicate that sex differences may be the result of a difference in the way both sexes weigh multiple criteria on which mate choice is based. It is suggested that more attention should be given to a causal and ontogenetic analysis of these criteria for an understanding of sex differences in mate choice. The function of sex differences found in imprinting studies seems not to be related to plumage differences between sexes but may be related to sex differences in optimal mate choice. 相似文献

Ten subjects (five males, five females) were studied in resting conditions. Ventilation (VT, f, TI, TE), heart rate (HR) and RR interval were recorded or measured. Each subject voluntarily breathed with spontaneous frequency at different ratios of his spontaneous tidal volume (VrT). The results show that sinus arrhythmia increases with lung volume but without effect on mean heart rate. When VT is increased by two times its spontaneous value, the ventilatory drive (VT/TI) is raised in both sexes; the relative duration of inspiration (TI/Ttot) is modified (+20%) in females only. Thus with the cardiac effects of increasing lung volume being similar in both sexes, we conclude that sinus arrhythmia is not generated by sensory inputs from pulmonary structures, but that its origin is at the CNS level. Moreover, there may be a sex difference in the control of voluntary ventilation, a suggestion requiring further investigation. 相似文献

Ethanol-induced sleeping time was determined in mice of both sexes at ages ranging from 3 weeks to just over 1 year. A progressive increase in sleeping time was seen in both sexes up to 26 weeks of age; no subsequent changes were observed, except for a modest decrease in the oldest female group. In the majority of age groups, sleeping time values were higher in females, but few statistically significant sex differences were found. 相似文献

This article is part of a Special Issue "Neuroendocrine-Immune Axis in Health and Disease." Clinical evidence has indicated that women are more susceptible to stress-related and autoimmune disorders than men. Although females may be more susceptible to some disease states, males do not escape unscathed and are more susceptible to metabolic dysfunction. The hypothalamic-pituitary-axis plays a pivotal role in the sexually dimorphic effects of chronic stress through alterations in negative feedback. Recent evidence has implicated the glucocorticoid receptor and its co-chaperones in the etiology of psychiatric and somatic diseases. Gonadal hormones heavily interact with both glucocorticoid receptor expression and glucocorticoid receptor action either through direct or indirect effects on proteins in the chaperone and co-chaperone complex. Diverse systems including the hypothalamic-pituitary-axis, the immune system, and metabolism are affected differently in males and females, possibly through the glucocorticoid receptor system. New considerations of glucocorticoid regulation through the co-chaperone complex in the brain will be vital to the development of treatment strategies for men and women afflicted by neuropsychiatric and somatic disorders. 相似文献

In May 2000, a General Accounting Office (GAO) report revealed that although women are now participating in clinical trials in numbers proportionate to their numbers in the general population, data collected in these trials are not routinely analyzed by sex.[1] Without such sex analysis, clinically relevant information about potentially lifesaving treatments could be lost. In July 2001, the Society for Women's Health Research convened a workshop to address strategies for conducting subgroup analyses to detect sex differences. Workshop participants concluded that understanding sex differences will enable medical researchers to design healthcare interventions for both men and women more effectively and that one can plan for and conduct sex analysis without compromising the quality of the study or making the study prohibitively expensive. 相似文献

Anthropometric variation and sex differences were investigated among the Yanadi tribe, who live in different regions and show
differences in population structure variables and form regional breeding populations. In case of within population variation
in anthropometric characters, both males and females show greater variation in a few specific characters (e.g., HB, LL) and
almost no variation in FB, but least variation in HL and NB in males and in ZB, LB in females and show sex differences. Overall,
females showed greater variation in more number of characters than males. In case of between population variation a few traits
show clinal trend between male-female comparisons. Each character shows a specific pattern (e.g., HB, ZB, EL, GB) which vary
according to the spatial distribution of the regional populations. The curves also indicate least average differences corresponding
to within regional homogeneity among males and females (e.g., HB, ECD, EB) and increasing differences with males and females
of other regions. A comparison of anthropometric profiles of the five populations show significant sex differences in IY subpopulation.
The three mainland subpopulations show wide morphological differentiation with two coastal subpopulations, who also differ
in subsistence pattern and geographically isolated. A comparison of anthropometric profiles between males and females across
five populations show positive association between P1, HF and P2 populations, whereas significant negative association with CY and HF. The correllelographs based on the male-female comparisons
also indicate greater morphological similarity between sexes in cases of within regional population. They also show clinal
changes of either decreasing or increasing trends of morphological variation between populations in association with spatial
distribution and population structure differences. The results obtained are in agreement with the expectations from the population
structure of the tribe. 相似文献

A study on lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) play behaviour was conducted on four exhibits at three different zoological parks so that 19 gorillas were observed. Juvenile
gorillas played the most, but play continued at fairly high frequencies through adolescence. Most social play occurred between
dyads. Triadic groups usually chased each other. No sex differences in type of play were observed, but gender differences
in partner preferences were observed. Males played with both other males and females, while females seldom played together.
These data support the social skills hypothesis (Baldwin & Baldwin, 1974) of play.
Data were gathered while the author was a graduate student at Tulane University and a visiting lecturer at the University
of California, Riverside. 相似文献

Sex-specific differences are apparent in the methylation patterns of H19 and Igf2 imprinted genes in embryonic germ cells (EGCs) derived from 11.5 or 12.5 days post coitum (dpc) primordial germ cells (PGCs). Here we studied whether these differences are associated either with the sex chromosome constitution of the EGCs or with the sex of the genital ridge (testis versus ovary) from which the PGCs were isolated. For this purpose we derived pluripotent EGC lines from sex-reversed embryos, either XY embryos deleted for Sry (XY(Tdym1)) or XX embryos carrying an Sry transgene. Southern blotting of the EGC DNA was used to analyze the differentially methylated regions of Igf2 and H19. The analysis revealed that both genes were more methylated in EGCs with an XY sex chromosome constitution than in those with an XX sex chromosome constitution, irrespective of the phenotypic sex of the genital ridge from which the EGCs had been derived. We conclude that the sex-specific methylation is intrinsic and cell-autonomous, and is not due to any influence of the genital ridge somatic cells upon the PGCs. 相似文献

To understand the evolution of parental care, one needs to estimatethe
payoffs from providing care for the offspring and the payoffsfrom terminating
care and deserting them. These payoffs arerarely known. In this study we
experimentally estimated therewards from brood desertion in a species that
has a variablepattern of parental care. In particular, either the female or
themale parent may desert the brood in Kentish plover Charadrius
alexandrinus,so some broods are attended by one parent of either sex,
whereasin other broods both parents stay with the brood until the chicks
fledge. We created single males and single females by experimentallyremoving
the other parent and the clutch. The expected rematingtime of males was
significantly higher (median: 25.4 days) thanthat of the females (5.3 days,
p <.0001). The expected rematingtime tended to increase over the
breeding season in both sexes, although the increase was significant only in
females. The newnest of remated males was closer to their previous territory
(mean± SE, 46 ± 8 m) than that of the remated females(289
± 57 m, p <.001). Hatching success of new nestswas not
different between remated males and females. Our resultsdemonstrate that the
remating opportunities are different formale and female Kentish plovers and
these opportunities varyover the season. We propose that the remating
opportunitieswere influenced by the male-biased adult sex ratio and the
seasonaldecrease in the number of breeders. However, we stress thatmeasuring
remating times is a more direct measure of matingopportunities than
calculating the operational sex ratio. 相似文献

Recent studies have shown that females have improved myocardial functional recovery, TNF receptor 1 (TNFR1) signaling resistance, and increased STAT3 phosphorylation following acute ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) compared with males. We hypothesized that 1) STAT3 deficiency in endothelial cells (EC) impairs myocardial functional recovery in both sexes, 2) EC STAT3 deficiency equalizes sex differences in functional recovery, and 3) knockout of EC STAT3 decreases activation of myocardial STAT3 and increases p38 MAPK activation following acute I/R. Isolated male and female mouse hearts from WT and EC STAT3 knockout (STAT3KO) were subjected to 20-min ischemia/60-min reperfusion, and +/- dP/dt were continuously recorded. Heart tissue was analyzed for the active forms of STAT3 and p38 MAPK as well as expression of caspase-8 (Western blot) following I/R. EC STATKO had significantly decreased myocardial functional recovery in both sexes (%recovered +dP/dt: male 51.6 +/- 3.1 vs. 32.1 +/- 13.1%, female 79.1 +/- 3.6 vs. 43.6 +/- 9.1%; -dP/dt: male 52.2 +/- 3.3 vs. 28.9 +/- 12%, female 75.2 +/- 4.1 vs. 38.6 +/- 10%). In addition, EC STAT3KO neutralized sex differences in myocardial function, which existed in WT mice. Interestingly, EC STAT3 deficiency decreased myocardial STAT3 activation but increased myocardial p38 MAPK activation in both sexes; however, this was seen to a greater degree in females. We conclude that EC STAT3 deficiency resulted in decreased recovery of myocardial function in both sexes and neutralized sex differences in myocardial functional recovery following I/R. This observation was associated with decreased activation of myocardial STAT3 and increased activation of p38 MAPK in EC STAT3KO heart after I/R. 相似文献
