The pine caterpillar Dendrolimus punctatus (Walker) with a larval facultative diapause is one of the most destructive insect pests of the pine tree Pinus massoniana in China. The larvae feeding on pine trees with different damage levels were studied to determine the induction of diapause under both laboratory and field conditions. Developmental duration of larvae before the third instar was the longest when fed with 75%-90% damaged needles, followed by 25%-40% damaged needles and intact pine needles, whereas mortalities did not differ among different treatments under the conditions of 25℃ and critical photoperiod 13.5:10.5 L:D. At 25 ℃, no diapause was induced under 15:9 L:D, whereas 100% diapause occurred under 12:12 L:D regardless of the levels of needle damage. Incidences of larvae entering diapause when they were fed with intact, 25%-40% and 75%- 90% damaged pine needles were 51.7%, 70.8% and 81% under 13.5:10.5 L:D, respectively. Similar results were obtained in the field experiment. Incidence of diapause was significantly different among the pine needle damage levels of pine trees when the photoperiod was close to the critical day length, indicating that the effect of host plants on diapause induction was dependent on the range of photoperiod. The content of amino acid and sugar decreased and tannin increased in pine needles after feeding by the pine caterpillars, suggesting that changed levels of nutrients in damaged needles or a particular substance emitted by damaged pine trees was perhaps involved in the diapause induction of the pine caterpillar.  相似文献

The temporal dynamics of Pinus halepensis seedling emergence, density and survival were studied in detail during the first postfire year, in five Aleppo pine forests of Attica (Stamata, Villia, Avlona, Kapandriti and Ag. Stefanos; burned in June 1990, July 1990, September 1991, September 1992 and July 1993, respectively). The timing of emergence and establishment of Aleppo pine seedlings was found to be correlated with the prevailing meteorological conditions - mainly rainfall and to a lesser degree temperature. In most cases, seed germination and seedling emergence took place in a ``single massive wave'' (resembling a right-skewed normal distribution), shortly after the onset of the first postfire rainy season, (Stamata, Villia and Avlona; 80-90% of the total cohort emerged during November-December). However, variations in the timing and spread of this pattern were observed in Agios Stefanos and Kapandriti. In the former, there was a considerable delay of seedling emergence (80% by the end of February); in the latter, a bimodal pattern was found (peaks in December-February and March-April). The dynamics of pine seedling mortality (which amounted to a yearly 23-50% of the total cohort) showed two major, discrete peaks of almost equal importance during the first postfire year: at the initial seedling establishment phase (in the winter) and during the dry summer.  相似文献

Volume and stem straightness were the main selection criteria for the first two generations of the French maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) breeding programme. In this article, we investigate the consequences of this selection on wood quality. Wood density, as a predictor of wood quality, is studied both in the breeding populations and in commercial varieties. Phenotypic and genetic correlations between wood density and growth traits are investigated in successive breeding populations with three genetic field experiments of respectively 30, 29 and 12 years old. Correlation estimates were either slightly negative or non-significantly different from zero depending on the test considered. Consequently, a low impact of growth selection on wood quality should be expected in improved seed sources. However, we observed a significant wood density decrease in two improved varieties as compared to unimproved seed sources at age 15. In addition to this first effect on wood density, growth improvement is also expected to reduce the rotation age and thus increase the proportion of juvenile wood, which is known as having a lower density than mature wood. This change was studied and quantified using a growth model. Finally, a wood density decrease reaching up to 6% was predicted in the improved varieties compared to unimproved material, when both the observed decrease in wood density and the predicted increase in juvenile wood proportion were taken into account. Changes in land use patterns and vegetation can trigger ecological change in occupancy and community composition. Among the potential ecological consequences of land use change is altered susceptibility to occupancy by invasive species. We investigated the responses of three introduced mammals (red deer, Cervus elaphus; wild boar, Sus scrofa; and European hare, Lepus europaeus) to replacement of native vegetation by exotic pine plantations in the Patagonian forest‐steppe ecotone using camera‐trap surveys (8633 trap‐days). We used logistic regression models to relate species presence with habitat variables at stand and landscape scales. Red deer and wild boar used pine plantations significantly more frequently than native vegetation. In contrast, occurrence of European hares did not differ between pine plantations and native vegetation, although hares were recorded more frequently in firebreaks than in plantations or native vegetation. Presence of red deer and wild boar was positively associated with cover of pine plantations at the landscape scale, and negatively associated with mid‐storey cover and diversity at the stand scale. European hares preferred sites with low arboreal and mid‐storey cover. Our results suggest that pine plantations promote increased abundances of invasive species whose original distributions are associated with woodlands (red deer and wild boar), and could act as source or pathways for invasive species to new areas.  相似文献

We investigate the characteristics of individual tree response to competition on source–sink balance through the functional–structural plant model GreenLab. Four Chinese pine (Pinus tabulaeformis Carr.) trees were destructively sampled and were divided into two groups: high-density group and low-density group. First, the effects of density on organ dimensions and on organ relative mass were analysed based on experimental measurements. These were primary indicators of the plant response to competition. Second, the hidden parameters of the GreenLab model, as well as a tree-specific characteristic surface, were estimated using the data of total tree biomass for needle and wood compartments, for each of the four trees in parallel. The quality of the fitting is finally validated using data of individual organ mass at shoot level for the sampled branches. The Mann–Whitney Student’s t test showed that there were significant differences between the shoot attributes of the two groups for shoot diameter, shoot biomass and needle biomass. No significant difference was found for current year shoot lengths of the two groups. The parametric identification of the model allowed estimating and comparing the amount of biomass that was allocated to primary growth and to secondary growth in the two density conditions. It showed that biomass allocated to secondary growth (ring compartment) was the most strongly affected by density, and that the organ demand satisfaction ratio profiles of each of these trees were a relevant, integrated indicator of the tree state.  相似文献

Background and Aims Although extreme climatic events such as drought are known to modify forest dynamics by triggering tree dieback, the impact of extreme cold events, especially at the low-latitude margin (‘rear edge’) of species distributional ranges, has received little attention. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of one such extreme cold event on a population of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) along the species’ European southern rear-edge range limit and to determine how such events can be incorporated into species distribution models (SDMs).Methods A combination of dendrochronology and field observation was used to quantify how an extreme cold event in 2001 in eastern Spain affected growth, needle loss and mortality of Scots pine. Long-term European climatic data sets were used to contextualize the severity of the 2001 event, and an SDM for Scots pine in Europe was used to predict climatic range limits.Key Results The 2001 winter reached record minimum temperatures (equivalent to the maximum European-wide diurnal ranges) and, for trees already stressed by a preceding dry summer and autumn, this caused dieback and large-scale mortality. Needle loss and mortality were particularly evident in south-facing sites, where post-event recovery was greatly reduced. The SDM predicted European Scots pine distribution mainly on the basis of responses to maximum and minimum monthly temperatures, but in comparison with this the observed effects of the 2001 cold event at the southerly edge of the range limit were unforeseen.Conclusions The results suggest that in order to better forecast how anthropogenic climate change might affect future forest distributions, distribution modelling techniques such as SDMs must incorporate climatic extremes. For Scots pine, this study shows that the effects of cold extremes should be included across the entire distribution margin, including the southern ‘rear edge’, in order to avoid biased predictions based solely on warmer climatic scenarios.  相似文献

Hybrids between shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata Mill.) and loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) have increased since the 1950s throughout the southeastern USA. Previously, greater sprouting capacity and the formation of a basal crook that lowers the height of dormant buds may have favored pure shortleaf pine populations on fire prone sites. The objective of this study was to determine how seasonal timing of topkill by both fire and topclipping affect sprouting of shortleaf × loblolly pine F1 hybrids compared to their parent open-pollinated populations during their third growing season. A factorial combination of top-clipping (hand pruners) and girdling by fire (propane torch) was conducted on November 2010, January, March, and April 2011 and sprouting response was measured after the growing season. Survival of topkilled shortleaf pine (94 %) was greatest followed by hybrid (78 %) and loblolly pine (35 %). However, species effects varied with topkill treatment and treatment date because survival was relatively lower for loblolly and hybrid pines in the burn-only as well as the November and April treatment dates while survival of shortleaf pine was consistently high. The number of sprouts was greatest for shortleaf (32.3) intermediate for hybrid (23.8) and lowest for loblolly pine (12.0). Overall, 83 % of shortleaf pine, 35 % of hybrid pine, and 5 % of loblolly pine exhibited a basal crook. The height from ground line to the lowest sprout was shortest for shortleaf (3.5 mm), intermediate for hybrids (7.7 mm), and largest for loblolly pine (21.3 mm). While the hybrid saplings exhibited intermediate performance in survival, sprouting capacity, and crooking, pure shortleaf pine were superior and are probably better suited to recover from fire.  相似文献

Acoustic communication is taxonomically widespread in bark beetles and is proposed to play an important role in a variety of social and defensive behavioural contexts. Yet our understanding of how signals vary between contexts is currently limited. The present study tests the hypothesis that acoustic signals vary between behavioural contexts in the female pine engraver beetle Ips pini (Say) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae). Female Ips pini produce acoustic chirps using a vertex‐pronotal stridulatory organ. Randomly sampled chirps generated under three contexts (i.e. distress, predation and premating) are compared for their duration, number of pulses, interpulse intervals, pulse rate and amplitude envelope shapes. The results obtained show that, during premating events, chirps are significantly longer in duration and tend to have a higher proportion of descending amplitude envelopes than chirps occurring during distress and predation events. Chirps produced during distress and predation conditions are indistinguishable from one another. By contrast to the results from previous bark beetle studies, no support is found for categorizing chirps as ‘interrupted’ or ‘uninterrupted’ types based on temporal patterns. The functional significance of context‐dependent variation in chirp characteristics is discussed. Previous studies on acoustic communication in bark beetles are limited as a result of a general lack of objective sampling and measurement criteria for characterizing signals. Recommendations are outlined for future studies on the functions and evolution of acoustic communication in bark beetles.  相似文献

1 The pine beauty moth Panolis flammea has two main host plants in Britain: Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine), which is the ancestral food plant where the insect is never abundant enough to cause tree mortality, and Pinus contorta (lodgepole pine), an introduced host tree that has experienced periodic widespread tree mortality due to this pest.
2 We review the recent literature, published mostly after the year 2000, regarding the impact of natural enemies on the population dynamics of P. flammea in Britain.
3 The natural enemies of P. flammea are more diverse and abundant in Scots pine habitat than in lodgepole pine habitat and some of them show differential selection for P. flammea larvae in Scots pine habitat over those located in lodgepole pine habitat.
4 It is concluded that the difference in the population dynamics of this insect in the two different habitats was probably the result of the P. flammea finding enemy-free space in lodgepole pine habitat.
5 Recent evidence on the diversity and impact of natural enemies on lodgepole pine has demonstrated that they currently have a much more significant impact on this pest than they did in the 1970s and 1980s, when outbreaks were frequent.  相似文献

The Australian Weed Risk Assessment protocol (WRA) is often considered the standard approach for pre-border screening of new plant introductions. Here we assess its robustness against three key criteria: ability to discriminate success or failure of species at three stages of the invasion process (introduction, naturalisation and spread); sensitivity to taxonomic range and target region; and dependence on knowledge of invasive behaviour elsewhere. We address these issues by retrospectively testing the WRA using pine (Pinus) introductions to New Zealand and Great Britain. For both regions we calculated WRA scores for 115 species, and classified all species according to whether they had been introduced, which of these had naturalised, and the extent of their naturalised distribution (spread). Using regression models, we assessed whether WRA scores could predict success at each stage. We repeated this procedure using WRA scores calculated without information on species naturalisation behaviour elsewhere. In both regions, the WRA could discriminate among species in the same genus at the introduction and naturalisation stages, but not at the spread stage. The outcome at the naturalisation stage depended on prior knowledge of naturalisation behaviour elsewhere. Without this information the WRA may be unable to distinguish among closely related species, and should be used cautiously where data on invasive behaviour elsewhere is lacking. Human selection played a strong role in the invasion process both through introducing pine species likely to naturalise in New Zealand and Great Britain in the first instance, and subsequent use of many of these species for forestry in the target regions.  相似文献

Resin tapping could affect water and nutrient transport processes in Chinese pine trees, rendering them more vulnerable to extreme climatic events, such as drought, and affecting the ecological function of forests in semi-arid regions. This study evaluated how resin tapping affects the tree-ring growth and climate sensitivity of Chinese pine in the Loess Plateau. We compared tree-ring growth patterns between the tapped and untapped faces of tapped trees, and investigated tree-ring growth and its response to climate between tapped and untapped trees in a forest stand during the 1967–2017 period. Tapped trees showed asymmetrical growth patterns after resin tapping, with narrower rings near the tapped face and wider ones near the untapped face. Furthermore, tapped trees had inter-annual variations consistent with those of untapped trees except for the years 2000 and 2001, with significantly lower values following resin tapping, and tree-ring growth then returning to normal. The climate response analysis indicated that the tree-ring growth of both tapped and untapped trees was negatively affected by monthly mean temperatures during the early growing season (May to July) in the post-resin-tapping period. Furthermore, tree-ring growth in tapped trees also revealed significant correlation with water vapour deficit and the Palmer drought index, which indicates that tapped trees are more vulnerable to drought. Further studies based on stable isotopes (i.e. δ13C, δ18O, and δ15N) could improve our understanding of the physiological mechanisms that regulate the effects of resin tapping on tree-ring growth.  相似文献

We examined the effects of wind speeds on pollen capture by megastrobili of jack pine (Pinus banksiana). We found that, when wind speed increased from 1.3 to 7.5 m/s, the relative capture efficiency (E(r)) did not change significantly (P ≤ 0.206) and remained below 12%. However, total capture rates increased linearly with wind speed and atmospheric pollen density. Because theoretical models of capture efficiency predict the E(r) to increase to ~80% asymptotically, our findings suggest that receptive megastrobili are equally adept at capturing pollen at all naturally occurring wind speeds.  相似文献

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were employed to map the genome and quantitative trait loci controlling the early growth of a pine hybrid F1 tree (Pinus palustris Mill. 2 P. elliottii Engl.) and a recurrent slash pine tree (P. elliottii Engl.) in a (longleaf pine 2 slash pine) 2 slash pine BC1 family consisting of 258 progeny. Of the 150 hybrid F1 parent-specific RAPD markers, 133 were mapped into 17 linkage groups covering a genetic distance of 1,338.2 cM. Of the 116 slash pine parent-specific RAPD markers, 83 were mapped into 19 linkage groups covering a genetic distance of 994.6 cM. A total of 11 different marker intervals were found to be significantly associated with 13 of the 20 traits on height and diameter growth using MAPMAKER/QTL. Nine of the eleven marker intervals were unique to the hybrid parent 488 genome, and two were unique to the recurrent parent 18-27 genome. The amount of phenotypic variance explained by the putative QTLs ranged from 3.6% to 11.0%. Different QTLs were detected at different ages. Two marker intervals from the hybrid parent 488 were found to have QTL by environment interactions.  相似文献

Invasive exotic woody species, including conifers escaped from plantations, are usually regarded as serious threats to native biodiversity. Becerra & Montenegro (Applied Vegetation Science, 16, 2013, 2) present an interesting example of invasive Pinus radiata facilitating native woody regeneration in semi‐arid central Chile. However, the positive value of invasive conifers for restoration and conservation will not necessarily apply in all situations.  相似文献

Electrical impedance spectra (80 Hz–1 MHz) in Scots pine needles were found to be characterized by spectrum skewness in the Cole-Cole plot. These spectra were subjected to analysis with two distributed models: (i) the Cole-Cole function and (ii) an equivalent circuit which takes account of the presence of air spaces within the needles (Model-A). In analysis with untreated needles (without artificial infiltration with water), Model-A fitted better than the Cole-Cole function to the experimental data. After infiltration of water into the needles, the extent of spectrum skewness was substantially decreased compared with the pre-infiltration condition and the Cole-Cole function fitted better than Model-A to the measured impedance data. The Cole-Cole decreased from 0.47 in non-infiltrated needles to 0.42 in the infiltrated needles. The exceptionally large value of in non-infiltrated needles can be explained by the presence of air spaces, which produce transmission line properties in the mesophyll. In support of the validity of Model-A, this new model provided specific membrane resistances of 1190 ± 83 cm2 in cold hardened and non-hardened needles respectively. These specific membrane resistance are comparable with previous reports of membrane resistances in other biological systems. It is concluded that in this exceptionally spongy tissue, Cole-Cole is likely to be due to the effects of the transmission line properties of cells which are surrounded by air spaces and only thin cell walls outside the insulating cell membranes. Pine rocklands are deeply imperiled habitats restricted to South Florida and the Caribbean. In South Florida, more than 98% of pine rockland habitat has been destroyed in the past century (outside of Everglades National Park). Due to their proximity to human populations, management options in the remaining fragments are sometimes limited, and fires that are necessary to maintain healthy habitat structure are often excluded. Despite these pressures, conservation initiatives in pine rocklands have been surprisingly successful, and plant extinction has been avoided. In the coming decades, however, sea-level rise threatens to all but eliminate the pine rocklands, and efforts to preserve their many endemic species will likely fail. We synthesize the results of numerous ecological studies and review the successes and failures of conservation in South Florida’s pine rocklands. Further, we illustrate the value of continued conservation efforts, and provide direction in the light of the habitats long-term fate. We advocate the increased use of prescribed fire and, as the effects of climate change become more apparent, the translocation of some endemic species. Finally, we acclaim pine rocklands as a model system for studying how plant communities respond to environmental change. South Florida’s fragmented landscape, with shifting gradients of elevation, salinity, inundation and nutrient availability, should continue to inspire ecologists to address important questions, and better prepare the region, and the world, for the challenges of the coming decades.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted in a dry heath forest dominated by Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and a mat-forming lichen (Cladina stellaris (Opiz) Brodo) to assess the effect of wet-deposited nickel (Ni) on pine seedlings and soil microorganisms, and to explore whether an intact lichen mat could act as a buffer against heavy metal deposits. Pine seedlings were planted in quadrats covered by a natural lichen layer and in quadrats from which the lichen layer had been completely removed. The quadrats were exposed to four levels of Ni deposition: 0 (i.e., distilled water), 10, 100 and 1000 mg m–2 year–1 in two growing seasons. Increasing Ni deposition led to an increase in the Ni content of the needles, roots and the soil organic layer. The lichen mat reduced Ni flow to the organic soil layer, but had no significant, reducing effect on needle or root Ni concentration. The most severe Ni treatment had detrimental effects on seedling growth and increased peroxidase activity in the previous years needles. Removal of the lichen layer did not increase susceptibility of seedlings to Ni. Values of maximal carbon use efficiency (Max) and metabolic quotient (qCO2) of the soil microorganisms indicated protective value of the lichen mat to soil microorganisms at the highest Ni treatment. Skimming per se decreased basal respiration, qCO2 and concentrations of potassium in the soil and also increased the lag period of the microorganisms as a response to in situ substrate addition.  相似文献
