Carbonate eolian dunes can form huge sand bodies along the coasts but are seldom described in the pre-Quaternary record. The study of more than 600 thin-sections collected in present-day, Holocene and Pleistocene dunes from Sardinia, Crete, Cyprus, Tunisia, Morocco, Australia and Baja California confirms that these deposits can be easily misinterpreted as shallow marine at core or thin-section scale. The classical eolian criteria (fine-grained and well-sorted sands) are exceptional in carbonate dunes because the diversity of shapes and densities of carbonate particles lowers the critical shear velocity of the sediment thus blurring the sedimentary structures. Wind carbonate deposits are mainly heterogeneous in size and often coarse-grained. The paucity of eolianites in the pre-Quaternary record could be due to misinterpretation of these deposits. The recognition should be based on converging sedimentological and stratigraphic elements at core scale, and diagenetic (vadose diagenesis, pedogenetic imprints) and petrographical (grain verticalization, scarcity of micritic envelopes, broken and/or reworked foraminifera) clues in thin-section. Bioclastic or oolitic grainstones showing evidence of vadose diagenesis or pedogenetic imprints, should always be suspected of having an eolian origin.  相似文献

The Holocene sedimentary record of Sabkha Boujmel (SE Tunisia) is expressed by a shallowing-upward carbonate lagoon-tidal flat cycle (2.3 m thick) unconformably overlying continental silt-sandy sediment, Late Würmian in age. The sedimentary package of this cycle starts with transgressive marginal shallow marine (intertidal to subtidal) bioclastic sands grading upwards to black mudstone, rich in organic matter (T.O.C. up to 1.3%) deposited within a lagoon protected from the sea by Upper Pleistocene lithified sand spits. The uppermost part of the cycle is represented by oobioclastic carbonate sands covered with dead biodegraded microbial mats and/or reddish sands of aeolian origin deposited in intertidal to supratidal environments. The facies arrangement, particularly the spatial distribution of the ancient and the more recent microbial mats, records the progressive infilling of the lagoon as well as the progradation of the shoreline during the last 2000 years. The organic-rich facies which provide an age varying between 4130 and 6800 yr B.P. were deposited when the Boujmel lagoon started to be progressively separated from the Mediterranean Sea.The main factors controlling the facies and the thickness variation are the local topographic sea-floor irregularities most likely controlled by the inheritance morphology resulting from an important fluviatile digging that occurred during the last glacial maximum, the relative sea-level fluctuations, the hydro-isostatic rebound and the climate.  相似文献

We investigated the geographical distribution of genetic variation in 67 individuals of Triglochin maritima from 38 localities across Europe using AFLP markers. Analysis of genetic variation resulted in the recognition of two major genetic groups. Apart from few geographical outliers, these are distributed (1) along the Atlantic coasts of Portugal, Spain and France and (2) in the North Sea area, the Baltic Sea area, at central European inland localities, the northern Adriatic Sea coast and the Mediterranean coast of southwest France. Considering possible range shifts of T. maritima in reaction to Quaternary climatic changes as deduced from the present-day northern temperature limit of the species, Quaternary changes of coastline in the North Sea area and the very recent origin of the Baltic Sea, we conclude that the coastal populations of T. maritima in the North Sea and Baltic Sea areas originated from inland populations.  相似文献

The direction of sediment transport in the aeolian sandstones of the Botucatu Formation (latest Jurassic–earliest Cretaceous of the Paraná Basin) has been interpreted on the basis of cross-strata dip directions, which allowed the reconstruction of regional wind patterns in midwestern Gondwana. Regionally, cross-strata dip directions indicate variations of palaeowind directions across the outcrop area of the Botucatu palaeoerg. The northern portion of the palaeoerg was characterized by palaeowinds blowing from the NNE, whereas the southern portion was under the influence of palaeowinds coming from the SW. A wind convergence zone occurred at palaeolatitudes around 24° to 26°S. The identified wind pattern agrees with general circulation models for the Late Jurassic, which predict that, during the summer months (December through February), strong monsoonal winds to the S existed at low latitudes in Gondwana. Southerly winds converged at the ITCZ (at around 24°S) with winds blowing toward the northeast.  相似文献

The Pleistocene dune field of Tufia, located on the east of Gran Canaria (Spain), contains different stratigraphic levels of indurated pillar-like structures that are interpreted as megarhizoliths. The megarhizoliths occur at the top of different aeolian sets and reach 31.5 cm in diameter and over 1 m in height. These scattered, free-standing, vertical, cylindrical-to-slightly conical columns usually appear as hollow cylinders, displaying elliptical cross-sections aligned with the prevailing wind. On the leeward side of some specimens the external wall shows a tail of rock matrix resembling a sort of “wind shadow”. These tails and other remains of the associated rock matrix show a texture composed of long, horizontal, parallel cylinders orientated with the wind.Internally the most complete structures show five concentrically arranged zones: Zone (a), is a central pore corresponding to the cavity originally occupied by the root; Zones (b) and (c), which include alveolar and laminated carbonate textures indicating that carbonate precipitation was mostly induced by the roots and their associated microorganisms; and Zones (d) and (e), consisting mostly of aeolian sands. In (d) the sand grains show thin micritic coatings whereas in (e) vadose aragonite cements can be seen on the grain surface suggesting a less biogenic influence in their formation. The degree of cementation and the time of the precipitation of carbonate around the roots controlled the preservation of these zones. Thus, in some cases, Zones b, c and/or d are not preserved. Cylinders are up to 30× the diameter of the root that nucleated them. The presence of the megarhizoliths at the top of the aeolianite beds indicates that aeolian sedimentation halted several times, allowing soil formation and plant colonisation during slightly more humid periods. The occurrence of megarhizoliths is further proof of the alternation of arid and slightly more humid climates in the north Atlantic during the last glacial period. It is also noted that they may be misinterpreted as animal trace fossils or tree trunk casts, resulting in incorrect ichnological or palaeoenvironmental interpretations.  相似文献

A new species of rail is described from a Pleistocene and Holocene cave deposit on the island of Eivissa, Pityusic Islands (western Mediterranean Sea). Rallus eivissensis sp. nov. was an insular relative of the European Water Rail Rallus aquaticus . Compared with the extant Water Rail, the new species was smaller and stouter, had shorter and more robust hind limbs and shorter wings, with probably reduced flight ability. The Pityusics were the only Mediterranean islands with a vertebrate Quaternary fauna lacking terrestrial mammals, and this absence is no doubt related to the Eivissan rail evolution. The chronology of the Rallus eivissensis sp. nov. extinction overlaps broadly with a period of uncertainty for the arrival of humans at Eivissa, suggesting a relationship between the two events.  相似文献

Although eolian deposits are known to record the dominant winds, secondary conditions such as wind reversals during wintertime can also be observed in the petrographic composition and facies succession. Thus, eolian deposits are used here as a local paleoclimatic proxy. The spatial distribution of the depositional facies, early diagenetic imprints, and early fracture network of a coastal Pleistocene eolian ridge in southeastern Tunisia is described using a small-scale GIS model. Facies analysis indicates that coastal dune systems record seasonal cycles. The fracture density and directions are strongly influenced by the depositional facies type. Laminated facies present a higher fracture density compared to more homogeneous facies and show only one major fracture direction, while the more homogeneous facies display a bimodal distribution. Such a difference between these two groups is explained by the heterogeneous distribution of the early calcite cement within the laminated facies. No tectonic activity or overlying strata have affected the Pleistocene dunes under study. Therefore, the mechanism responsible for the fractures could only be related to the own weight of the eolianite and to its internal or underlying lithologic heterogeneity.  相似文献

Sedimentary facies of seven Posidonia oceanica meadows of western Mediterranean Sea were investigated. Five meadows are located in the Tyrrhenian coast, two are placed in the western coast of Sardinia and Corsica. These meadows develop on soft and hard substrates, often forming “mattes”, in areas characterized by different oceanography, morphology, and terrigenous inputs produced by coastal erosion and fluvial runoff. A total of five sedimentary facies have been recognized ranging from pure terrigenous to bioclastic: terrigenous sand to gravelly sand, bioclastic sands, skeletal gravelly sands, mixed siliciclastic–carbonate sands, well to moderately sorted skeletal siliciclastic sands. All of the sedimentary facies associated with P. oceanica are in the sand grain size. The gravelly fraction is generally subordinated and variable, whereas the muddy fraction is generally low. The very low frequencies of the muddy fraction can be attributed to re-suspension processes and to the lack of carbonate mud production. The rate of epiphytic carbonate production obtained by two of the investigated meadows averages 400 g m?2 year?1. This value is in the range of temperate Mediterranean as well as of tropical and subtropical seagrasses. The epiphytic carbonate production plus the calcareous biota living on seagrass substrate contributes to form mixed siliciclastic–carbonate sediments of the nearshore environment of the Mediterranean. Lastly, the carbonate production associated with seagrass was derived by biota belonging to the heterozoan assemblage, where aphotic organisms are dominant, together with oligophotic biota such as coralline algae and symbiont-bearing foraminifera. Consequently, in the well-illuminated seagrass settings, the prevalent skeletal assemblages is represented by the heterozoan association while the components of the photozoan assemblages are absent or subordinate. This a key point for the paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the photic zone in the fossil record. Because the skeletal components of many seagrass dwellers greatly contribute to the carbonate sediment production of photic shallow-water environments, the seagrass meadows became substantial places of carbonate production and C (organic and inorganic) sequestration during the Cenozoic.  相似文献

The Mediterranean region as a whole has the highest dung beetle species richness within Europe. Natural coastal habitats in this region are among those which have suffered severe human disturbance. We studied dung beetle diversity and distinctiveness within one of the most important coastal protected areas in the west Euro‐Mediterranean region (the regional Park of Camargue, southern France) and made comparisons of dung beetle assemblages with other nearby Mediterranean localities, as well as with other coastal protected area (Doñana National Park, Spain). Our finding showed that: (1) The species richness of coastal habitats in the Camargue is low and only grasslands showed a similar level of species richness and abundance to inland habitats of other Mediterranean localities. The unique habitats of the coastal area (beaches, dunes and marshes) are largely colonized by species widely distributed in the hinterland. (2) In spite of their low general distinctiveness, dune and marsh edges are characterized by the occurrence of two rare, vulnerable, specialized and large roller dung beetle species of the genus Scarabaeus. As with other Mediterranean localities, current findings suggest a recent decline of Scarabaeus populations and the general loss of coastal dung beetle communities in Camargue. (3) The comparison of dung beetle assemblages between the Camargue and Doñana shows that, in spite of the low local dung beetle species richness in the Camargue, the regional dung beetle diversity is similar between both protected areas. Unique historical and geographical factors can explain the convergence in regional diversity as well as the striking divergence in the composition of dung beetle assemblages between both territories.  相似文献

Meco, J., Muhs, D.R., Fontugne, M., Ramos, A.J.G., Lomoschitz, A. & Patterson, D. 2010: Late Pliocene and Quaternary Eurasian locust infestations in the Canary Archipelago. Lethaia, Vol. 44, pp. 440–454. The Canary Archipelago has long been a sensitive location to record climate changes of the past. Interbedded with its basalt lavas are marine deposits from the principal Pleistocene interglacials, as well as aeolian sands with intercalated palaeosols. The palaeosols contain African dust and innumerable relict egg pods of a temperate‐region locust (cf. Dociostaurus maroccanus Thunberg 1815 ). New ecological and stratigraphical information reveals the geological history of locust plagues (or infestations) and their palaeoclimatic significance. Here, we show that the first arrival of the plagues to the Canary Islands from Africa took place near the end of the Pliocene, ca. 3 Ma, and reappeared with immense strength during the middle Late Pleistocene preceding MIS (marine isotope stage) 11 (ca. 420 ka), MIS 5.5 (ca. 125 ka) and probably during other warm interglacials of the late Middle Pleistocene and the Late Pleistocene. During the Early Holocene, locust plagues may have coincided with a brief cool period in the current interglacial. Climatically, locust plagues on the Canaries are a link in the chain of full‐glacial arid–cold climate (calcareous dunes), early interglacial arid–sub‐humid climate (African dust inputs and locust plagues), peak interglacial warm–humid climate (marine deposits with Senegalese fauna), transitional arid–temperate climate (pedogenic calcretes), and again full‐glacial arid–cold climate (calcareous dunes) oscillations. During the principal interglacials of the Pleistocene, the Canary Islands recorded the migrations of warm Senegalese marine faunas to the north, crossing latitudes in the Euro‐African Atlantic. However, this northward marine faunal migration was preceded in the terrestrial realm by interglacial infestations of locusts. □Locust plagues, Canary Islands, Late Pliocene, Pleistocene, Holocene, palaeoclimatology.  相似文献

OSL dating of weakly consolidated, root-bound, non-calcareous quartz arenites in northeast Jordan, currently assigned to the Plio-Pleistocene Azraq Formation, suggests a Middle Pleistocene (652 ± 47 ka) age. The sandstones are up to 15.5 m thick and overlain by a 2.5 m thick Holocene gypcrete caprock. Facies and textural analyses suggest that the sandstones are predominantly aeolian in origin, mainly derived from Tertiary sediments exposed close to the depositional site. The sands were transported by the prevailing NW winds and deposited in a broad, relatively flat sand sheet environment. Rhizoliths occur throughout the sandstones, mainly as long, downward tapering, vertical tap roots, rarely branched and with few laterals. Microscopic examination of root cores replaced by carbonate reveals the presence of alveolar fabrics, possible needle fibre calcite, calcified organic filaments of fungal, root vessel and root hair origins, characteristic of low magnesium beta calcretes, typical of humid climates.Morphologically the roots resemble modern shrub-like species typical of desert environments where water availability at the surface and in the subsurface was sufficient to support an effective vegetation cover. Plots of stratigraphic variations in root length, root spacing and root frequency reflect temporal variations in the water table level and precipitation during sand deposition. All three parameters show a similar crude cyclicity consistent with fluctuations in the level of the water table with the most moist phase beneath the predominantly waterlain Holocene gypcrete when trees appeared for the first time. The gypcrete signifies a change to temporary wetter conditions and may mark the boundary between the Pleistocene and Holocene in this area. Although pedogenic horizonation is poorly developed, especially in desert sands, the beta calcretes and rhizocretions typically form within active soil zones. Soils do not form where rainfall is < 150 mm per year, and above 350 mm complete leaching of the edaphon occurs. However, above 300 mm per year shrubs are replaced by grassland, hence rainfall is inferred to have been 150-300 mm per year, much higher than the < 50 mm in the area today. The age of the sandstones may correlate with isotopic event 17, dated at 659 ka, when the Pleistocene climate in Jordan was characterised by arid to semi-arid phases interrupted by shorter more humid phases, when the water table was higher and the precipitation/evaporation balance greater than today.  相似文献

Summary The limestones of the Wadi Nasb Formation of the uppermost Lower Cambrian of Jordan are under- and overlain by massive sandstones of a near-shore facies. Facies analysis is based on samples from an outcrop at the northeastern shore of the Dead Sea and two oil test wells in the Wadi Sirhan Depression in eastern Jordan. Limestones were deposited in the shallow sea and within the coastal tidal area. Cyanobacteria, algae, echinoderms, trilobites and hyoliths have contributed the bulk of the carbonate and phosphatic material composing the Wadi Nasb limestone. Fine-grained facies types are composed of peloidal carbonate muds with laminar and nodular algal and cyanobacterial mats. They formed within a quiet tidallagoonal environment. The coarse grained facies types consist of carbonate sands with layers of sheell debris deposited in crossbeds in an environment with a rich endobenthic fauna. Here most particles were coated by cyanobacterial crusts. Ooids, oncoids and various coated grains are present. Consolidated sediments were commonly eroded within or near to this environment and their remains were integrated within the sands. Diagenesis is reconstructed step by step with deposition, first cementation, aragonite dissolution, compaction, pore filling, formation of pressure solution, growth of dolomite and anhydrite within the calcitic limestone and final fissure formation and filling.  相似文献

Aim The Pleistocene glaciations were the most significant historical event during the evolutionary life span of most extant species. However, little is known about the consequences of these climate changes for the distribution and demography of marine animals of the north‐eastern Atlantic. The present study focuses on the phylogeographic and demographic patterns of the sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus (Teleostei: Gobiidae), a small marine demersal fish. Location North‐eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean, Irish, North and Baltic seas. Methods Analysis was carried out by sequencing the mtDNA cytochrome b gene of sand gobies from 12 localities throughout the species’ range, and using this information in combination with published data of allozyme markers and mtDNA control region sequences. Several phylogenetic methods and a network analysis were used to explore the phylogeographic pattern. The historical demography of P. minutus was studied through a mismatch analysis and a Bayesian skyline plot. Results Reciprocal monophyly was found between a Mediterranean Sea (MS) clade and an Atlantic Ocean (AO) clade, both with a Middle Pleistocene origin. The AO Clade contains two evolutionary significant units (ESUs): the Iberian Peninsula (IB) Group and the North Atlantic (NA) Group. These two groups diverged during Middle Pleistocene glacial cycles. For the NA Group there is evidence for geographic sorting of the ancestral haplotypes with recent radiations in the Baltic Sea, Irish Sea, North Sea and Bay of Biscay. The demographic histories of the Mediterranean Clade and the two Atlantic ESUs were influenced mainly by expansions dated as occurring during the Middle Pleistocene glaciations and post‐Eem, respectively. Main conclusions The pre‐LGM (Last Glacial Maximum) subdivision signals were not erased for P. minutus during the LGM. Middle Pleistocene glaciations yielded isolated and differently evolving sets of populations. In contrast to the case for most other taxa, only the northern Atlantic group contributed to the post‐glacial recolonization. The historical demography of Mediterranean sand gobies was influenced mainly by Middle Pleistocene glaciations, in contrast to that of the Atlantic populations, which was shaped by Late Pleistocene expansions.  相似文献

The Taurus Mountain range separates the central Anatolian steppe and the Eastern Mediterranean Region. The Amanos Mountains lie to the east, playing a significant role in forming this region which is strongly influenced by the Mediterranean Sea. Between the Taurus Mountains and the sea, there is a diversity of terrestrial, limnic and marine ecosystems. These contain a number of differing biotopes such as grassland above the timberline, evergreen and deciduous forests, scrubland, river beds, lagoons, coastal saltmarshes, coastal woodlands and sand dunes. Due to intensive land use, the ecological diversity is threatened, and so governmental and scientific bodies have combined resources to implement conservation measures. This paper emphasizes the importance of these conservation activities and discusses realistic proposals for conservation in the region.  相似文献

Soil, fungi, including species forming endomycorrhizae, appear to be important to pioneer plants colonizing coastal sand-dunes in the subtropics. In three mobile dunes at Cooloola, Queensland, networks of fungal hyphae were very common in the surface 0-20 cm of bare sand of the colonizing zones. These networks, consisting of long threads of hyphae, extend out into the bare sands from the roots of pioneer seedlings, most of which are endomycorrhizal. The fungi intermesh sand-grains to form aggregates which appear to be an important factor in stabilizing these loose sands. The sands are dominantly quartz grains partly covered by thin sesquioxide coatings which contain some phosphorus. Phosphorus held by sesquioxide is generally regarded as being unavailable to most plants. However, the close attachment of hyphae to these coatings, the lack of alternative sources of phosphorus and the prominence of endomycorrhizal fungi are consistent with these fungi obtaining phosphorus from these surfaces. These fungi appear to be important in plant colonization of these dunes and could have appliction in revegetaton of disturbed areas.  相似文献

Extensive systems of fixed linear dunes occur in the Kalahari region of southern Africa, from 28°S to 16°30′S. They provide evidence for large-scale expansion of arid climates in the subcontinent during the Quaternary. On the basis of differing dune morphologies and alignments, three periods of Upper Pleistocene aridity are recognised.Patterns of dune alignments reflect paleosand flow regimes and permit deduction of past winds and circulation patterns, leading to the conclusion that arid episodes were associated with, and probably caused by, greater strength and persistence of the South African anticyclone.A tentative chronology of the arid periods tends to support the hypothesis that subtropical aridity was contemporaneous with glacial conditions in high latitudes.  相似文献

Tracks and trackways of the ruminant goat, Myotragus balearicus Bate, 1909 are abundant in the Late Pleistocene aeolianites of the south coast of Mallorca, Spain. The carbonate aeolianites form impressive dunes and related sand ramps that were initiated as echo dunes in front of a 20–40 m high paleocliff of Miocene reefal limestone. Where the dunes built up to the cliff top, they covered it as an aeolian ramp. The dunes and sand ramps were active during the dry summer months but were passive during the wet winter period. The small, goat-like animals were abundant on the island, and for unknown reasons crossed the aeolian accumulations in large numbers. This study deals with the tracks formed in the dune deposits. All preserved trackways indicate impression into moist sand. Special features of the tracks include the structure produced by the withdrawal of the foot, here called the ‘axis’, and a disturbance zone of plastic deformation around this. On dune crests, the disturbance zone surrounds the axis more or less symmetrically. However, in addition, a ‘pressure pad’ of dislocated, slightly rotated sediment bound by curved microfaults is commonly produced posterior to the axis by propulsive pressure of the foot. On steep stoss and lee slopes, the pressure pad becomes oriented in a down-slope position as a result of gravitational slip of the walking animal. Combination of disturbance of the sediment in this way by manus followed by overprinting of similar disturbance by pes produces highly complicated track structure. This structure may be characteristic of artiodactylous mammals in soft sand, particularly aeolian deposits. The structure is designated as Bifidipes aeolis isp. nov.  相似文献

The wood warbler (Phylloscopus sibilatrix) is a migratory species in the western Mediterranean wintering in the Gulf of Guinea region, West Africa. In autumn and spring, this species, along with the populations breeding in Ireland and Britain, uses the Italian peninsula as its main axis of migration. From the data of captured birds at several ringing stations in the western Mediterranean (Balearic Islands and coastal Iberian Peninsula), we analyzed capture rates of the species during spring migration from 1993 to 2007. Based on the selection of days with a significant number of captures and those without captures, we analyzed the effect of wind direction over the western Mediterranean to determine a relationship between winds and the number of captures. From a total of 663 wood warblers captured between 1993 and 2007, a total of 31 days have been selected as significant days with a high number of captures, and 31 days have been selected as no-capture days. On days of maximum captures, winds coming from an easterly direction, i.e. Algeria and Tunisia, were dominant, indicating days with a clear eastern component. Contrary to expected results, captures were also made on days when the wind direction was predominantly from a northerly direction. Analysis of the origin of the winds in north eastern Spain (western Mediterranean) revealed that the majority of northerly winds originated from Africa and not from Europe as is usual for this region. Days or periods selected as no-capture days were characterized by winds coming from a northerly (European origin) or westerly direction.  相似文献
