Patterns of carbon integration in aclonal species are poorly understood in spite of their potential to influence individual fitness. To provide more information about these patterns, we performed a defoliation experiment with P. aristata. We examined, at the metameric level, the reproductive responses to the removal of the major carbon sources within metamers. Bracts on marked reproductive spikes and leaves subtending these spikes were removed at three stages of reproductive maturity: spike elongation, flowering, and fruiting. Spike dry weight and length, capsule number, seeds per capsule, and seed weight were measured. We tested the hypothesis that seed weight would respond least to defoliation. We also performed a complementary 14C translocation experiment to measure the amount of radioactive carbon moving into the marked spikes from outside the metamer. Defoliation depressed all components of reproduction within marked spikes, and little 14C was translocated from outside the metamer into the reproductive spikes, even those that were defoliated. Both results support the view that reproductive metamers in this species are largely autonomous with respect to their carbon budget. Defoliation during spike elongation most depressed reproduction, and bract removal depressed reproduction more than did leaf removal. The data suggest that bracts compensate for leaf removal by increasing their photosynthetic rate; however, the ability to compensate differs among plant populations. Of all the reproductive components, seed weight was least affected by defoliation. The data show, however, that the time of defoliation relative to reproductive development influences which reproductive components are affected.  相似文献

Two experiments were done in Saxcil growth cabinets in order to investigate the effects of climatic factors and nitrogen nutrition on the growth, reproductive development and seed yield of soyabean cv. TK5. In the first, plants were grown to maturity in eight environments comprising all combinations of two short daylengths (11 h 40 min and 13 h 20 min), two day (27 and 33oC) and two night (19 and 24oC) temperatures. In the second, day temperature was kept at 33oC but the night temperature was varied (19 and 24oC) as was the mineral nitrogen supply (20 and 197 ppm N) to plants which were either inoculated or not with an effective single strain of Rhizobium. Taller, more branched, later flowering plants were produced in the longer daylength but seed yield was hardly affected because the components of yield did not all respond similarly. In the higher day temperature treatments seed yield per plant was reduced by half because all yield components were adversely affected - pods per plant by 34 %, mean seed dry weight by 24 % and seeds per pod just slightly. There was a marked effect of the higher night temperature which promoted early vegetative growth, induced early flowering and although the number of pods per plant was, overall, reduced by 48 %, seed yield per plant was little affected as mean seed dry weight was increased by 37 % and the number of seeds per pod was also increased slightly. Prior to flowering, nodulated plants obtained about two thirds of their total nitrogen requirement via direct uptake and one third through the symbiotic system. Vegetative dry weight and plant nitrogen content were increased by the higher mineral nitrogen level and, although height was slightly diminished, more branches were produced. Seed yield, however, was only slightly increased. These experiments have shown that night temperature is an environmental factor of major importance for the growth of this soyabean cultivar. They have provided, also, a more rational basis for interpreting seasonal variations in growth and seed yield of soyabean in the tropics where, clearly, day and night temperature effects can override those of daylength and nitrogen nutrition.  相似文献

Summary This study examines the effect of different densities and the removal of all neighbours at different stages of development on all components of reproduction in the inbreeding annual Thlaspi arvense L. A 64-fold increase in density significantly reduced all repooductive components. The number of flower buds per plant was decreased most strongly; the order of decreasing plasticity among the other components was number of capsules per flower, individual seed weight, ovule number per capsule, flowers per flower bud and seeds per ovule. Removing neighbours at all stages of development increased seed yield of plants in comparison to the control without density reduction, but patterns of plasticity depended strongly on time of treatment. The main effect of the removal of neighbours at the vegetative stage was to increase the number of flowers per plant, but the number of ovules per capsule and seed weight increased also, and abortion of capsules decreased. Removing neighbours at the onset of flowering initially failed to affect flower number per plant, instead it resulted in a strong reduction of capsule abortion and an increase in seed weight. However, several weeks after flowering had initially ceased, fresh lateral inflorescences were produced, resulting in a second flush of reproduction. Removing neighbours at the stage of fruit ripening resulted at first only in an increase in seed witht, but later a second reproductive phase occurred. Fresh lateral branches were produced, but the apical meristem was also reactivated. The overall pattern of plasticity among all reproductive components in response to a removal of neighbours was the same as in response to density. The position of a capsule along the inflorescence influenced its number of ovules, the rate of seed abortion and the mean weight of seeds, with the type of effect depending on the developmental stage at which neighbours were removed. Significant negative correlations were found between the mean weight of seeds and the number of seeds in a capsule under all treatments.  相似文献

桑寄生植物作为关键种和关键性食物资源在生态系统中扮演着重要角色,其鞘花的繁殖物候特征不仅会影响自身的繁殖适合度而且还会影响依赖于其获取食物资源的动物。为了解鞘花的繁殖物候特征及其影响因素,探究其与寄主植物和种子散布者之间的相互作用关系。该研究以西双版纳地区分布的鞘花为对象,通过定期观测鞘花和其寄主植物木荷的繁殖物候,测量它们的生物学特性和温湿度等环境因子,并分析鞘花在个体水平和种群水平上的繁殖物候特征以及寄主植物和温湿度对其繁殖物候的影响。结果表明:(1)鞘花的开花物候属于集中大量开花模式,整个种群的花期和果期的持续时间分别约为20 d和72 d,花期和果期的同步性指数都较高,6月中旬鞘花果实被取食的数量和速率最大,之后逐渐降低。(2)鞘花的始花期与木荷的始花期相关性较高,花期和果期与木荷的繁殖物候基本重叠。(3)每月开花和果熟的个体数量与同期和前一个月的平均温度和相对湿度的相关关系均不显著。总之,桑寄生植物的繁殖物候特征可能受到较多因素的影响,若想全面了解半寄生植物的繁殖物候特征,就要综合考虑生物和非生物等多种因子的共同作用。  相似文献

Premise

Fire induces flowering in many plant species worldwide, potentially improving reproductive fitness via greater availability of resources, as evident by flowering effort, and improved pollination outcomes, as evident by seed set. Postfire increases in flowering synchrony, and thus mating opportunities, may improve pollination. However, few studies evaluate fire effects on multiple components of fitness. Consequently, the magnitude and mechanism of fire effects on reproductive fitness remain unclear.

Methods

Over multiple years and prescribed burns in a prairie preserve, we counted flowering stems, flowers, fruits, and seeds of three prairie perennials, Echinacea angustifolia, Liatris aspera, and Solidago speciosa. We used aster life-history models to assess how fire and mating opportunities influenced annual maternal fitness and its components in individual plants.

Results

In Echinacea and Liatris, but not in Solidago, fire increased head counts, and both fire and mating opportunities increased maternal fitness. Burned Echinacea and Liatris plants with many flower heads produced many seeds despite low seed set (fertilization rates). In contrast, plants with an average number of flower heads had high seed set and produced many seeds only when mating opportunities were abundant.

Conclusions

Fire increased annual reproductive fitness via resource- and pollination-dependent mechanisms in Echinacea and Liatris but did not affect Solidago fitness. The consistent relationship between synchrony and seed set implies that temporal mating opportunities play an important role in pollination. While fire promotes flowering in many plant species, our results reveal that even closely related species exhibit differential responses to fire, which could impact the broader plant community.  相似文献

The proportion of annual biomass production allocated to various vegetative and reproductive tissues was measured in differently aged individuals of Vaccinium corymbosum from native populations in southern Michigan. The relationship between age and allocation was determined and a lifetime pattern of biomass partitioning was developed. The proportion of biomass allocated to reproduction was higher than many have predicted for woody species, and the relationship between age and reproductive effort did not conform to optimality models. In addition, reproductive performance was not affected by previous growth or reproduction. The basis of this complex reproductive behavior was examined by quantifying the relationships among components of reproduction. In general, yield components behaved independently within a season. A high potential reproductive effort coupled with yield component independence may be an adaptation to fluctuating environments.  相似文献

Flowering synchrony is essential for plant reproductive success, especially in the case of small‐sized populations of self‐incompatible species. Closely related to synchrony, flowering intensity influences pollinator attraction and pollinator movements. Thus, a high flowering intensity may increase pollinator attraction but, at the same time, may also increase the probability of geitonogamous pollinations. Depending on the mating system, the female fitness of plants in small populations may be affected by both the positive effects of higher flowering synchrony and pollinator attraction and the negative effects of geitonogamous pollinations induced by a high flowering intensity. It was hypothesized that different‐sized plants in a population would show contrasting flowering patterns, resulting in differences in pollinator behaviour. These influences could result in differences in mating and female reproductive success. This hypothesis was tested by studying the flowering pattern of Erodium paularense (Geraniaceae), a rare and endangered endemic of central Spain. The temporal distribution of flower production was explored throughout the reproductive season, and the probability of xenogamy and geitonogamy and their relationship to plant size and fitness components were calculated. The analysis of this partially self‐compatible species showed diverse flowering patterns related to different plant sizes. Small plants produced a larger number of seeds per fruit in spite of having lower values of flowering synchrony. By contrast, large plants produced a larger number of seeds from geitonogamous pollinations. The effect of different flower displays and outcrossing rates on seed set varied throughout the season in the different groups. Summary Reproductive success and growth rate data were collected for individually marked crab spiders Misumena vatia (Clerck) in 1980, 1981, and 1982. All measures of reproductive success were found to be quite variable between individuals within years, but did not differ between years. Reproductive effort (mass of clutch/prereproductive mass of female) was the least variable measurement and was not correlated with female weight at reproduction. Clutch weight and number of eggs per clutch were highly correlated with female reproductive weight. Egg weight was not correlated with the number of eggs per clutch. Hatching success did not vary with clutch size and averaged 94.5%. Growth rates of spiders were highly variable, indicating large variation in feeding rate. In 1981 and 1982, approximately 20% of female spiders were unable to capture enough prey to grow and reproduce. Primary prey species differed in weight and in their contribution to spider egg production. Spiders attacked a larger percentage of bumblebees but captured a larger percentage of honeybees. There was no simple relationship between diet choice and reproductive success. Spiders which selected suboptimal umbels to forage on some or all of the time, however, had significantly lower reproductive success than spiders choosing the best umbels.  相似文献

In grain crops, total sink capacity is usually analysed in terms of two components, seed number and individual seed weight. Seed number and potential individual seed weight are established at a similar timing, around the flowering period, and seed weight at maturity is highly correlated with the potential established earlier. It is known that, within a species, available resources during the seed set period are distributed between both yield components, resulting in a trade-off between seed number and seed weight. Here we tested if this concept could apply for interspecific comparisons, where combinations of numbers and size across species could be related to the total available resources being either allocated to more seed or larger potential individual seed weight during the seed set period. Based on this, species differences in seed weight should be related to resource availability per seed around the period when seed number is determined. Resource availability per seed was estimated as the rate of increase in aboveground biomass per seed around the period of seed set. Data from 15 crop species differing in plant growth, seed number, seed weight and seed composition were analysed from available literature. Because species differed in seed composition, seed weight was analysed following an energy requirement approach. There was an interspecific trade-off relationship between seed number per unit of land area and seed weight (r = 0.92; F(1, 13) = 32.9; n = 15; P < 0.001). Seed weight of different species was positively correlated (r = 0.90; F(1, 13) = 52.9; n = 15; P < 0.001) with resource availability per seed around the seed set period. This correlation included contrasting species like quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa; ∼100000 seeds m−2, ∼4 mg equivalent-glucose seed−1) or peanut (Arachis hypogaea; ∼800 seeds m−2, ∼1000 mg equivalent-glucose seed−1). Seed number and individual seed weight combinations across species were related and could be explained considering resource availability when plants are adjusting their seed number to the growth environment and seeds are establishing their storage capacity. Available resources around the seed set period are proportionally allocated to produce either many small seeds or few larger seeds depending on the particular species.  相似文献

Greengram or mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek), which originated in the Indian sub-continent, is an important pulse crop in India. Genetic diversity and patterns of variation among 111 accessions representing the better agronomic types from the entire collection of the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources were studied. Wide variation in morphological and agronomic traits viz. number of pods per plant, yield per plant, 100-seed weight, fruit setting capacity, flowering period, maturity, number of pod bearing peduncles, plant height, number of primary branches, length of branch, nodulation and leafiness was observed. Grain yield was found to be significantly correlated with 100-seed weight and pod length. The data were subjected to cluster and principal components analysis. The accessions were grouped into six discrete and well-defined clusters. The study demonstrated the patterns of variation at the population level. The multivariate analysis was useful in identifying a group of accessions with yield enhancing traits within a highly diverse group of accessions and their potential value in greengram improvement is suggested.  相似文献

Stevia rebaudiana (Bert.) Bertoni has sporophytic self-incompatibility and this may lead to poor seed yield and quality, which are obstacles to large-scale crop establishment. This research investigated the influence of insect pollinators and the harvesting time on the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the ripe seeds. A pot trial under open field conditions was established to evaluate the abundance of insect pollinators and three harvesting times on the production of ripe seeds, germination percentage, mean germination time and thousand seed weight (TSW) in 36 F1 open-pollinated genotypes. Large variability in the number of corymbs of capitula, flowering time, reproductive period and seed yield was observed among the genotypes. Genotypes with promising phenological and reproductive properties were identified. The worst germination percentage and TSW were recorded in the latest harvest. Significant linear regressions were found among the investigated parameters (insect number, germination percentage, TSW, seeds yield per plant and cycle length), confirming complex interactions on the yield and quality of stevia seeds. Results indicate that earlier flowering genotypes produced higher seed quantity, due to favourable weather conditions during the reproductive phase. Moreover, cross-pollination and the insect abundance, as Apidae and Syrphidae, play a crucial role for enhancing the stevia seed yield and quality.  相似文献

Summary Dry weight allocation to vegetative and reproductive structures in six perennial herbs was studied at three successional sites (quarry, grassland and scrub) on the magnesian limestone in County Durham, England, during the summer of 1978. Two species showed little difference between sites but the other four all displayed the same pattern. Population reproductive effort was highest in the quarry and lowest in the grassland. Reproductive effort of flowering individuals however was the same at all three sites, so that between-site differences in population reproductive effort were entirely a consequence of variation in the proportion of plants which flowered. Indirect evidence suggests that initiation of flowering may be triggered by the attainment of a critical leaf weight. It is suggested that the between-site differences can be explained in terms of the levels of competition at each site and that reproductive effort does not necessarily decline uniformly during succession.  相似文献

Drought accounts for significant yield losses in crops. Maize (Zea mays L.) is particularly sensitive to water stress at reproductive stages, and breeding to improve drought tolerance has been a challenge. By use of a linkage map with 121 single sequence repeat (SSR) markers, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for grain yield and yield components were characterized in the population of the cross X178×B73 under water-stressed and well-watered conditions. Under the well-watered regime, 2, 4, 4, 1, 2, 2, and 3 QTLs were identified for grain yield, 100-kernel weight, kernel number per ear, cob weight per ear, kernel weight per ear, ear weight, and ear number per plant, respectively, whereas under the water-stressed conditions, 1, 5, 2, 6, 1, 3, and 2 QTLs, respectively, were found. The significant phenotypic correlations among yield and yield components to some extent were observed under both water conditions, and some overlaps between the corresponding QTLs were also found. QTLs for grain yield and kernel weight per ear under well-watered conditions and ear weight under both well-watered and water-stressed conditions over-lapped, and all were located on chromosome 1.03 near marker bnlg176. Two other noticeable QTL regions were on chromosome 9.05 and 9.07 near markers umc1657 and bnlg1525; the first corresponded to grain yield, kernel weight per ear, and ear weight under well-watered conditions and kernel number per ear under both water conditions, and the second to grain yield and cob weight per ear under water-stressed conditions and ear number per plant under both water conditions. A comparative analysis of the QTLs herein identified with those described in previous studies for yield and yield components in different maize populations revealed a number of QTLs in common. Summary The reproductive effort of the limpet, Cellana tramoserica was investigated in high, mid, and low intertidal areas of the rocky shore as well as in a subtidal population. The reproductive effort of individuals within a population was independent of age. There was, however, a noticeable difference among populations with respect to the relative amount of gonad material spawned per year. The individuals from the subtidal population had the greatest reproductive effort, spawning the equivalent of 101% of their somatic weight per year, while the low, mid and high intertidal populations spawned the equivalent of 66%, 20%, 51%, respectively.Experimental transplants showed that individuals from all three intertidal populations increased their reproductive effort to match that of subtidal individuals. It was unlikely, therefore, that the observed patterns were the result of genetic differences among the populations. The reproductive effort of the populations was also not correlated with the rate of mortality of the adults in the four populations. The observed differences could be explained by a combination of the availability of food and intraspecific competition. The flexibility in the reproductive pattern of Cellana is hypothesised to be a result of this species having a dispersive larval stage, which may result in selection for plasticity of reproductive allocation, depending upon the environmental conditions at the site of settlement and growth to adult size.  相似文献

Many factors may affect reproduction of animal-pollinated species. In this study, the effects of pollen limitation, attractive traits (flower number, plant height and flower width) and flowering phenological traits (flowering onset, duration and synchrony) on female reproduction, as well as the patterns of variation in fruit and seed production within plants, were investigated in Paeonia ostii “Feng Dan” over two flowering seasons (2018 and 2019). Fruit set was very high (90%), and pollen supplementation did not increase fruit and seed production in either year, indicating no pollen limitation. Fruit set, ovule number per fruit and mean individual seed weight per fruit were not affected by any of the six attractive and phenological traits in either year, whereas seed number per fruit was related to the three attractive traits in one or both years. Seed number per plant was positively affected by the three attractive traits and best explained by flower number in both years, but the effect of each of the three phenological traits on seed number per plant differed between years. Within plants, the fruit set, ovule number, seed set and seed number per fruit declined from early- to late-opening flowers, presumably because of resource preemption, but the mean individual seed weight did not vary across the flowering sequence. Our study shows that attractive traits of Paeonia ostii “Feng Dan” are more important than flowering phenological traits in the prediction of total seed production per plant.  相似文献

Background: There have been few studies on the effects on alpine flora and vegetation of an increase in nutrient availability. Two main potential sources of increased nutrient availability in alpine ecosystems are enhanced mineralisation caused by climate warming and atmospheric nitrogen deposition. Little is known on how life history traits of different species are related at individual and community levels to enhanced nutrient availability.

Aims: We investigated the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus addition on the modular growth, flowering and germination of four species: two snowbed specialists and two alpine generalists.

Methods: We established in a late snowbed at the Gavia Pass, Italian Alps, a factorial experiment with four fertiliser treatments (N, P, Low N+P, and High N+P) and an unfertilised control. Nutrients were applied in 2003–2006 and we recorded the number of modules per individuals, total number of flowers, number of flowers per flowering module, and calculated the percentage of flowering modules in 2005 and 2006, and counted the number of seedlings in 2006.

Results: The modular growth and flowering effort of the species appeared to be co-limited by N and P. The alpine generalists showed greater responses to fertilization in vegetative growth and flowering compared with snowbed specialists. The number of seedlings recorded indicated species-specific responses to nutrient addition.

Conclusions: Our results suggest that enhanced nutrient availability stimulates modular growth and flowering effort in responsive alpine generalist species. This, in turn, could lead to an increase in their abundance, leading to changes in community structure in snowbeds with enhanced nutrient availability.  相似文献

The effects of soil texture and grazing by cattle on the production of seeds of Bouteloua gracilis were evaluated for a semiarid grassland in northeastern Colorado. Ten locations were chosen to represent the range in soil textures and grazing intensities found at the Central Plains Experimental Range research site. Number of flowering culms, inflorescences and seeds, length of each flowering culm, total biomass of reproductive structures (culms, inflorescences, and seeds), and basal area were assessed for 96 B. gracilis plants at each location. Community-level estimates of density of flowering culms and density of viable seeds were made for each location. Both soil texture and grazing by cattle were important to spatial variability in seed production and other indicators of reproductive effort by B. gracilis. Grazing was important in mediating effects of soil texture. On locations protected from grazing, soil texture had significant effects on seed production; the largest number of seeds was produced on the coarsest-textured soil and the fewest number on the finest-textured soil. Relationships between seed production and clay content and between seed production and other indicators of reproductive effort by B. gracilis were different for grazed and ungrazed locations. Spatial variability in seed production of B. gracilis as a result of spatial variability in soil texture and grazing may be important to the continued dominance of this species in the presence of disturbances that vary in time and space.  相似文献

入侵植物繁殖性状的研究可为揭示植物入侵机制提供重要的科学依据。为研究土壤养分对入侵植物和本地植物繁殖性状的影响, 并进一步研究养分添加是否更能促进入侵植物的繁殖能力, 我们设置了低、高两个养分水平, 通过同质园实验比较了不同土壤养分对假臭草(Praxelis clematidea)、胜红蓟(Ageratum conyzoides)、三叶鬼针草(Bidens pilosa) 3种菊科一年生入侵种和夜香牛(Vernonia cinerea)、一点红(Emilia sonchifolia)、墨旱莲(Eclipta prostrata) 3种本地种繁殖性状的影响。研究结果显示, 养分添加提高了6种菊科植物的开花株高、株高、地上生物量、单粒种子重量、总花序数、每花序种子数、总种子数量、总种子重量, 并使开花时间提前、花期延长。养分添加对入侵种的开花株高和单粒种子重量的提高幅度要比本地种更显著。相对于部分本地植物(夜香牛、墨旱莲), 养分添加更能促进部分入侵植物(假臭草、胜红蓟)的繁殖能力。三叶鬼针草和一点红的总种子数量和总种子重量在两种土壤养分水平下均较小。本地种墨旱莲的总种子数量和总种子重量在低养分条件下高于3个入侵种。这些结果表明, 高土壤养分仅能促进部分入侵植物相对于部分本地植物的繁殖能力。  相似文献

Plants from three Lobelia cardinalis populations were grown under common garden conditions to assess intra- and interplant variation in seed and pollen production. Seed number per flower and mean seed weight varied systematically with floral position on the inflorescence (lowest values were from terminal flowers) but pollen grain number per flower did not vary systematically with floral position. Most of the remaining variance in seed and pollen grain number per flower and mean seed weight was distributed among plants; clones produced very similar amounts of pollen and seed. Seed yield was positively correlated with seed production per flower and with total flower production, but not with mean seed weight; pollen yield was also positively correlated with pollen grain production per flower and total flower production. Seed and pollen yield were simple linear functions of plant size but only pollen yield was a simple linear function of flower production; seed yield was a quadratic function in which the second order term was negative. This quadratic relationship resulted from a negative correlation between seed number per flower and total flower production. This correlation, in addition to the wide variation among plants in pollen number per flower, accounts for the weak correlation of seed and pollen yield. I conclude from these data that it is unlikely that plants in natural L. cardinalis populations transmit genes to the population's seed crop equally through pollen and ovules—emphasizing the importance of measuring both male and female components of reproductive success.  相似文献

Studies of inbreeding depression in plant populations have focused primarily on comparisons of selfing versus outcrossing in self-compatible species. Here we examine the effect of five naturally occurring levels of inbreeding (f ranging from 0 to 0.25 by pedigree) on components of lifetime fitness in a field population of the self-incompatible annual, Raphanus sativus. Pre- and postgermination survival and reproductive success were examined for offspring resulting from compatible cross-pollinations. Multiple linear regression of inbreeding level on rates of fruit and seed abortion as well as seed weight and total seed weight per fruit were not significant. Inbreeding level was not found to affect seed germination, offspring survival in the field, date of first flowering, or plant biomass (dry weight minus fruit). The effect of inbreeding on seedling viability in the greenhouse and viability to flowering was significant but small and inconsistently correlated with inbreeding level. Maternal fecundity, however, a measure of seed yield, was reduced almost 60% in offspring from full-sib crosses (f = 0.25) relative to offspring resulting from experimental outcross pollinations (f = 0). Water availability, a form of physiological stress, affected plant biomass but did not affect maternal fecundity, nor did it interact with inbreeding level to influence these characters. The delayed expression of strong inbreeding depression suggests that highly deleterious recessive alleles were not a primary cause of fitness loss with inbreeding. Highly deleterious recessives may have been purged by bottlenecks in population size associated with the introduction of Raphanus and its recent range expansions. In general, reductions in total relative fitness of greater than 50% associated with full-sib crosses should be sufficient to prohibit the evolution of self-compatibility via transmission advantage in Raphanus.  相似文献
