Aglaia bourdillonii is a plant narrowly endemic to the southern portion of the Western Ghats (WG), in peninsular India. To understand its ecological
and geographic distribution, we used ecological niche modeling (ENM) based on detailed distributional information recently
gathered, in relation to detailed climatic data sets. The ENMs successfully reconstructed key features of the species’ geographic
distribution, focusing almost entirely on the southern WG. Much of the species’ distributional potential is already under
protection, but our analysis allows identification of key zones for additional protection, all of which are adjacent to existing
protected areas. ENM provides a useful tool for understanding the natural history of such rare and endangered species.

Gray slender lorises (Loris lydekkerianus) are 1 of 2 nocturnal primate genera occurring in India. Although the distribution and abundance of the species is known
for some parts of southern India, the relative distribution of the 2 subspecies, Loris lydekkerianus lydekkerianus and L. l. malabaricus, and their comparative densities and extent of overlap between their distributions remains largely unknown. We investigated
the distribution pattern and relative density of slender lorises in the Western Ghats mountain range in the state of Kerala
in southern India. We surveyed 36 forest ranges in 17 forest divisions of northern and central Kerala from February to November
2009 for the presence of lorises. We sighted slender lorises in 22 forest ranges in a variety of vegetation types, and the
relative abundance of the species ranged from 0.02 to 1.44 lorises/km. Our results confirm that both loris subspecies are
present in Kerala: Mysore slender lorises have a narrow patchy distribution on the eastern edges of the Western Ghats mountain
range, and Malabar slender lorises have a fairly contiguous distribution on the western slopes of the Western Ghats. We recommend
more detailed surveys in southern Kerala to identify the distribution patterns of the subspecies in these areas. 相似文献

We studied the feeding ecology of the Mysore slender loris (Loris lydekkerianus lydekkerianus) for 10.5 mo in a dry scrub forest at Ayyalur Interface Forestry Division, Tamil Nadu, South India. We recorded and analyzed 1240 feeding incidents, which indicate that the lorises were almost exclusively faunivorous, with 96% of all feeding events representing animal prey. Of prey items that could be identified (n = 605), 62.9% were ants and termites. Lorises fed on 9 orders and 17 families of insects, plus spiders, molluscs, and small vertebrates. Lorises infrequently fed on gums and a legume pod. They usually grabbed prey with one hand, while other appendages firmly held the substrate. Many of the identifiable prey items belong to insect taxa likely to contain toxic chemicals. Consumption of insects inferred to be toxic was accompanied by an elaborate behavioral repertoire of sneezing, slobbering and urine-washing. A high proportion of insects eaten by slender lorises (71%) occurred in patches or aggregations. The utilization of aggregated social insects may have implications for understanding the unusually high degree of gregarious behavior exhibited by the lorises. 相似文献

A new freshwater oligochaete species (Clitellata: Enchytraeidae) from Livingston Island,Antarctica 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The new enchytraeid species Lumbricillus healyae sp. n. is described from freshwater streams, with well-oxygenated and poorly mineralised waters, situated in Byers Peninsula
(Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica). Lumbricillus healyae sp. n. is morphologically close to L. antarcticus and L. incisus, and it is mainly distinguished by the structure of the spermatheca with a short, distinct ectal duct, the oval penial bulb
(greatest diameter in the transverse body axis) associated with strong dorso-ventral muscular fibres, and a protrusible pseudopenis.
A second undetermined Lumbricillus species is described from a small stream. Study specimens are not fully mature; however, the highly irregular form and size
of the testis-sac lobes and the absence of a penial bulb encapsulated under a muscular layer are remarkable. It is probably
related to a small group of Lumbricillus species reported from the Antarctic maritime region (L. colpites, L. griseus and L. aestum), characterised by the structure of the male duct, which ends in a simple pore surrounded by glands.

The sexual pattern and sexual development of the leopard grouper, Mycteroperca rosacea, were investigated from 483 specimens collected from the Gulf of California, Mexico. Histological and population data indicated
a gonochoric sexual pattern. Some juveniles passed through an immature bisexual phase of gonadal development, but no evidence
of post-maturational sex change was found. The immature bisexual phase is believed to be associated only with male development.
The size distribution and size at sexual maturity were similar for both males and females. In accordance with predictions
of the size-advantage model, the gonochoric sexual pattern of M. rosacea is likely influenced by its group-spawning mating system.

Mycena aphanes and Mycena exilis, belonging to section Filipedes and section Polyadelphia, are proposed as new species. They are described and illustrated and compared to other species in the two sections. Mycena aphanes is a strikingly characteristic Mycena with fulvous or yellowish brown colours of both pileus and stipe. Mycena exilis is characterized by its occurrence on fallen Salix leaves, a pale brown pileus, occasionally with a pale pink tinge, narrowly adnate lamellae, four-spored basidia, and the
presence of clamp connections.

The presence of several types of allelochemicals has been reported from Ajuga, a Labiatae genus comprising more than 40 species of wide distribution in extratropical regions of both hemispheres. The
genus is of great medicinal and economic importance and among the biological properties of the secondary metabolites, the
antifeedant activity against pest insects appears to be related to the presence of neo-clerodane type diterpenes. This review focuses on the isolation and structural elucidation of this type of compounds from
Ajuga species and the hemisynthetic compounds of closely related structure obtained. The reported biological activity of crude
extracts and isolated diterpenes will be briefly commented.

In 2001 Carijoa riisei, an octocoral native to the tropical Western Atlantic, was discovered overgrowing black corals in the Au’au Channel in Hawaii.
In this paper data from a 2001 survey are reanalyzed and combined with new data from 2003 and 2004 to assess the ecological
impact in greater detail. C. riisei differentially affected reproductively mature black coral colonies with maximum impact between 80 and 105 m. The pattern
of C. riisei overgrowth on black corals and C. riisei on the substrata appears to be bounded by high irradiance in shallow water and cold temperature in deep water. Evidence suggests
that the C. riisei settlement on black corals is facilitated by other epifauna. Once established, C. riisei spreads vegetatively and smothers the coral. The success of the C. riisei invasion appears to be unaided by anthropogenic disturbance and is at least partially attributable to Hawaii’s depauperate
shallow-water (<100 m) octocoral fauna.

Large-scale scientific computing applications frequently make use of closely-coupled distributed parallel components. The
performance of such applications is therefore dependent on the component parts and their interaction at run-time. This paper
describes a methodology for predictive performance modelling and evaluation of parallel applications composed of multiple
interacting components. In this paper, the fundamental steps and required operations involved in the modelling and evaluation
process are identified—including component decomposition, component model combination, M×N communication modelling, dataflow analysis and overall performance evaluation. A case study is presented to illustrate the
modelling process and the methodology is verified through experimental analysis.

The breeding population of the sandwich tern (Sterna sandvicensis) on the German North Sea coast has undergone substantial fluctuations throughout the last 100 years. Numbers of breeding
birds were fluctuating quite strongly in the first 30 years of the twentieth century. From 1930 to the mid-1950s, a relatively
steady decrease occurred. A minimum was reached in 1965 with 2,243 pairs. Around 1970, numbers increased quite markedly up
to the mid-1990s and reached a centurial maximum with 10,138 pairs in 1996. Most recently, the numbers have dropped to only
5,681 pairs in 2005, the lowest number over the last 30 years. Some colonies have existed over long periods, others only for
short periods, with often substantial and sudden changes. The distribution at sea was studied by transect counts from ships.
During the reproductive period, high totals were found between the mainland coast and the islands, up to 30 km from the outer
coast/island line. The seaward extent of the sandwich tern distribution coincided quite well with the 20-m depth line. Maximum
foraging ranges for single colonies were estimated to be ca. 45 km for Trischen, ca. 35 km for Norderoog and ca. 30 km for
both Scharh?rn/Nigeh?rn and Juist. Overall flight ranges for all colonies were estimated at 33.8 km for 95% of the birds.
Germany has a high international responsibility for the protection of this species. Only a few colonies exist every year,
making this species very vulnerable to anthropogenic disturbance, pollution events and fishing activities.

The abundance of two main pelagic fish species in Lake Tanganyika (Stolothrissa tanganicae and Lates stappersii) has always been observed to fluctuate considerably at different time scales. The inverse correlation between the abundance
of these species has often been interpreted as the consequence of predator−prey relations (avoidance behaviour by the prey).
However, currently the two species often appear spatially segregated in the lake, S. tanganicae dominating in the north while L. stappersii is generally abundant in the south where it feeds mostly on shrimps. A fluctuating abundance of the species is nevertheless
observed. As these fish species have a major importance for the fisheries, we investigated the limnological variability in
relation to the short-term variability of fish catches. The abundance of S. tanganicae was positively correlated to plankton biomass (r = 0.65), while water transparency (r = 0.56), depth of mixed layer (r = −0.70) and oxygenated water appeared important drivers for the abundance of L. stappersii. Alternating “mixing” and “stable” states of the epilimnion related to seasonal and internal waves variability are probably
determinant for the short-term variability in abundance of S. tanganicae and L. stappersii. In the framework of this study, remote sensing has shown a potentially interesting application for fisheries research at
Lake Tanganyika. We observed a close correspondence between phytoplankton blooms at the time of trade winds changes and increased
catches of S. tanganicae in the south. The anti-correlated abundance of S. tanganicae and L. stappersii probably mainly reflects the underlying fluctuating limnological environment. Fisheries studies need to integrate limnological
and planktonic monitoring to better understand large and complex ecosystems such as Lake Tanganyika.

The reaction of N-demethylation plays an important role in the degradation of some alkaloids in a number of organisms. This review presents
how our understanding of the N-demethylation of nicotine in plants has been improved through studies in cell cultures of Nicotiana plumbaginifolia and N. glutinosa using a variety of isotopic techniques. The overall aim is to understand how metabolism recycles the alkaloid skeleton, both
in terms of the metabolic route(s) exploited and the reaction mechanisms of the enzymes involved. The former has been approached
using high-resolution 2-dimensional NMR and GC-MS methods; the latter by determining kinetic isotope effects and modelling
the potential reaction steps. It appears that the mechanism for nicotine demethylation in plants is similar to but has significant
differences from that described for mammals and Pseudomonas bacteria. These differences are discussed.

A blue protein present in the mucus coating blue forms of walleye, Sander vitreus, was purified to homogeneity by a combination of ion exchange and hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The purified protein
has a molecular mass of 87,850 and is a homotetramer with a subunit molecular mass of 21,836. Solutions of the protein are
deep blue in color and show absorbance maxima at 383 and 633 nm, respectively. Acetone treatment of the protein releases a
blue chromophore with the spectral characteristics of biliverdin IXα. The results suggest that the blue protein is a new biliprotein
that we have termed Sandercyanin. The function of Sandercyanin is unknown, but limited amino acid sequence analysis suggests
it is a lipocalin that may be involved in the transport of heme degradation products.

Bitter lupins (Lupinus spp.) are not used as a protein source because of their toxicity. However, they may have alternative uses as potential sources
of natural insecticides. Quinolizidine alkaloids (QA) of three Mexican Lupinus species (Fabaceae): L. montanus (HBK),
L. stipulatus (Agardh) and L. aschenbornii (Schauer), were analyzed by capillary Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. Sparteine was found in high amounts in both L. montanus and L. aschenbornii while the major alkaloids in L. stipulatus extract were aphylline and an epiaphylline-like compound. Alkaloid extracts were tested for their insecticidal activity using
larvae of the Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith); (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) as a model pest. We compared LD50 values and mean weight of caterpillars fed with alkaloid extracts of the three species studied with those of sparteine, a
widespread QA found in various lupin species. Extracts of L. montanus and L. aschenbornii were found to be as effective as sparteine and extracts L. stipulatus were found to be the most toxic against the larvae of S. frugiperda. This suggests that the various QA act differently on caterpillars, and could be used to control Spodoptera populations.

We tested the pathogenicity of 18 Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschn.) Sorokin isolates and 22 Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin isolates against Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) larvae and adults. The efficacy of the most virulent isolate—M. anisopliae K—was evaluated in containers with a concrete bottom covered with wood shavings, under simulated poultry house conditions.
Application of conidia of this isolate to the shavings or directly to the concrete bottom reduced the yield of larvae in 8–15
time compared with the control. In another test, the mortality of mature larvae placed on previously inoculated shavings or
bottom reached 80–90% within 14 days, compared with 14% in the control. The residual activity of conidia kept at 28°C retained
its initial level during 14 days post-inoculation, but declined after three weeks. Based on our data M. anisopliae has considerable potential for the control of A. diaperinus.

The insect-pathogenic fungus Ophiocordyceps sinensis (better known as Cordyceps sinensis) is harvested over much of the Himalayan plateau as a highly prized remedy in traditional Oriental medicine. Over the past
10 years its financial value has increased dramatically, with collectors paid as much as US $12,500 kg−1 for top-quality material. This is causing significant distortion to local economies, and there is widespread concern that
the current rate of collection is unsustainable. This paper introduces the fungus and its insect hosts, documents some of
the biological and social constraints to achieving sustainability, describes the socioeconomic climate within which harvest
and sale occurs in Bhutan, and details the measures put in place by the Royal Government of Bhutan to promote wise management
of this valuable natural resource.

A total of 23 whale sharks were identified over a 5 d period in the Arta Bay region of the Gulf of Tadjora, Djibouti. Most
of the sharks aggregating in this area were small (<4 m TL) males. Individuals were identified using photographs of distinctive
scars and spot and stripe patterns on the sides of the animals. Of these, 65% had scarring that was attributable to boat or
propeller strikes. Most of the whale sharks we encountered were feeding on dense accumulations of plankton in shallow water
just off (10–200 m) the shoreline. This food source may account for the aggregation of sharks in this area. One 3 m male shark
was tagged with an ARGOS (Splash) satellite tag for 9 d. During this time the shark traversed to the shoreline on the opposite
side of the Gulf (a distance of 14 km) and then returned to the Arta Bay area before retracing his path to the other shore.
The shark spent most of the daylight hours at the surface, while at night dives were more frequent, deeper and for longer
durations.

The interconnection network is one of the key architectural components in any parallel computer. The distribution of the traffic
injected into the network is among the factors that greatly influences network performance. The uniform traffic pattern has
been adopted in many existing network performance evaluation studies due to the tractability of the resulting analytical modelling
approach. However, many real applications exhibit non-uniform traffic patterns such as hot-spot traffic. K-ary n-cubes have been the mostly widely used in the implementation of practical parallel systems. Extensive research studies have
been conducted on the performance modelling and evaluation of these networks. Nonetheless, most of these studies have been
confined to uniform traffic distributions and have been based on software simulation. The present paper proposes a new stochastic
model to predict message latency in k-ary
n-cubes with deterministic routing in the presence of hot-spot traffic. The model has been validated through simulation experiments
and has shown a close agreement with simulation results.
