Epicuticular wax from mature plants of Sorghum bicolor SD-102 was compared with that from panicles and seedlings of the same variety at the fourth-fifth leaf stage of growth. The composition of wax from SD-102 panicles was quite different from that of mature leaf blades and sheaths. Free fatty alcohols were the dominant class of wax from SD-102 seedlings and C32 was the major homologue of alcohols and aldehydes. For comparison purposes, the epicuticular waxes from whole plants of two other S. bicolor varieties, Alliance A and Martin A, grown up to the tasseling stage, have been analysed. The major wax components were free fatty acids. The typical chain lengths of aldehydes, free alcohols and free fatty acids were C28 and C30.p-Hydroxybenzaldehyde was not a wax component of the studied varieties of sorghum.  相似文献

Wax esters from the epicuticular wax of juvenile and mature-tree Pinus radiata foliage have been shown by capillary column GC-MS to consist mainly of short chain (C6–C12)alkanols esterified with long chain acids (C24–C32) and long chain alkanols (C24–C32) esterified with short chain acids (C6-C14) in a non-random manner. Mature-tree foliage wax esters also contained nonacosan-10-ol esterified with dodecanoic and tetradecanoic acids.  相似文献

Plants of the carnivorous genus Nepenthes efficiently trap insects in leaf pitchers, mostly employing epicuticular wax crystals on the pitcher walls to make them slippery for the prey. In the present study, the compositions and micromorphologies of the wax crystals of five Nepenthes species and hybrids were analysed in order to test whether the chemical principles underlying this ecological function are widespread within the genus. Three wax layers could be distinguished within the Nepenthes pitcher cuticles: (1) the outermost part of the crystals forming the platelets visible in standard scanning electron microscopy, (2) the bottom portion of the epicuticular wax crystals, and (3) an intracuticular wax layer. The composition of the intracuticular wax differed significantly from that of the neighbouring epicuticular layer. The compositions of corresponding wax mixtures from all five Nepenthes species and hybrids were very similar, with almost equal amounts of very long chain aldehydes and primary alcohols. While triacontanal (C30 aldehyde) was prevailing in the epicuticular crystals of Nepenthes albomarginata and Nepenthes x intermedia, Nepenthes x superba and Nepenthes x henriana were found to have especially high percentages of dotriacontanal (C32 aldehyde). Nepentheskhasiana” had an intermediate aldehyde composition with almost equal amounts of both chain lengths.  相似文献

The epicuticular waxes of the two sorghum varieties Alliance A and SD 102 have been analyzed, after separation of the leaf blades from the sheaths. The major constituents were found to be free fatty acids but small amounts of esters, aldehydes, alcohols, n-alkanes and sterols were also detected. The typical chain lengths of aldehydes, free alcohols and free fatty acids were C28 and C30.  相似文献

Two different mutations in Brassica oleracea, gl5 and gl4 have been re-investigated using acetate-1-14C labelling in an attempt to define more closely the nature of the genetic blocks to wax synthesis. It has been found that gl5 is a mutation which blocks elongation in the Step C28–C30. The mutation gl4 exhibits no elongation block and could be blocked in the decarboxylation Step C30–C29. 0·1 mM TCA supplied in the culture solution of cauliflower seedlings affected the leaf surface by producing a glossy appearance similar to that induced by gl3 and gl4. At this concentration growth was not inhibited and the appearance of the plants was normal except for the surface wax. The amount of surface wax produced was about 40% of that in untreated seedlings on a leaf area basis. Slight, but significant changes in wax composition were noted, mainly involving a reduction in C30 acids and aldehydes, a slight reduction (33–29%) in alkane content, and a marked difference in chain length composition of the alkanes with C27 increased relative to C29. Over a range of concentrations from 0·1–1 mM, TCA inhibited incorporation of label from acetate-1-14C into C30 acids and aldehydes more than into C28 at concentrations 0·4–0·8 mM while label tended to accumulate in C24 and C26 acids; thus elongation C28–C30 was especially sensitive to TCA. TCA also inhibited incorporation into primary alcohols and esters almost as much as into C29 compounds. In spite of relatively specific effects on incorporation of label into longer chain lengths, the resulting block to C30 synthesis is not sufficient to make much difference to the overall rate of C29 synthesis. Both results of analysis of wax from whole plants and experiments with tissue slices in vitro indicated that the effect of TCA in reducing the glaucousness of the leaf surface is a combination of overall reduction of wax synthesis together with slight but significant changes in wax composition.  相似文献

The hexane extract of Wyethia mollis contains the n-alkanes C15-C18, C20-C25, C27 and C29. Linoleic acid was the only detectable acidic component. A mass spectral analysis of the wax ester fraction indicated that it was a mixture of homologues, the saturated even-carbon acids n-C16-C30 esterfield with the saturated even-carbon alcohols n-C18-C26. The chloroform extract yielded the known isoflavones santal and 3′-O-methylorobol along with a new lanostane-type triterpene, 22,25-epoxy-lanosta-7:9(11)-dien-3-one. The wide distribution of n-alkanes and the decreased odd-even carbon ratio are consistent with the proposed primitive nature of this plant.  相似文献

Epicuticular and intracuticular waxes from both adaxial and abaxial surfaces of the leaves of Kalanchoe daigremontiana were analyzed. All wax mixtures were found to contain approximately equal amounts of triterpenoids and very long chain fatty acid (VLCFA) derivatives. The triterpenoid fraction consisted of glutinol (8-19% of the total wax) and friedelin (4-9%), together with smaller amounts of glutanol, glutinol acetate, epifriedelanol, germanicol and β-amyrin. The VLCFA derivatives comprised C27-C35 alkanes (19-37% of the total wax), C32-C34 aldehydes (3-7%), C32 and C34 fatty acids (0.2-3%), C26-C36 primary alcohols (4-8%), and C42-C52 alkyl esters (2-9%). The wax layers were found to differ in triterpenoid amounts, with the intracuticular wax containing higher percentages of most triterpenoids than the epicuticular wax. Friedelin, the only triterpenoid ketone present, showed the opposite distribution with higher proportions in the epicuticular wax. VLCFA derivatives also accumulated to higher percentages in the epicuticular than in the intracuticular wax layer. Epicuticular wax crystals were observed on both the adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces.  相似文献

Sedum album is a succulent plant, with phenotypic variability resulting in delimitation of a number of taxa with diverse taxonomic recognition. We analyzed the taxa from Sedum album in broad sense (S. album, S. micranthum, S. athoum and S. serpentini) from Balkan Peninsula, to check whether the variability of their epidermal structures and epicuticular wax composition corresponds to their taxonomic reliability. Epidermal structures and epicuticular waxes were analyzed using light and scanning electron microscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-flame ionization detector chromatography and multivariate statistical techniques. Analyses of studied taxa have shown that significant systematic characters include adaxial epidermal and guard cell length, stomatal frequency and subsidiary cells area on abaxial epidermis. The content of n-alkanes C29, C30, C27, C32 and C33 was shown to be valuable criterion for their phytochemical delimitation. The comparison of epicuticular wax microstructures has shown no significant differences. Results indicate presence of two (micromorphology) or three (phytochemistry) well-defined groups of populations, with S. serpentini manifesting a considerable level of separation toward the others. Sedum athoum have shown weak to moderate degree of differentiation, while S. micranthum has shown general resemblance to S. album.  相似文献

The leaf cuticle is covered by epicuticular wax consisting mainly of straight-chain aliphatic hydrocarbons with a variety of substituted groups. Studies have been concentrated on n-alkanes in epicuticular wax of Winged bean [Psophocarpus tetragonolobus (Stickm.) DC.]. Hydrocarbon constituents especially n-alkane analyses of seven cultivars of Winged bean [Psophocarpus tetragonolobus (Stickm.) DC.] have been undertaken. All the n-alkanes in between C14–C18 and C20–C38 are present in each of the species. Among the species, amount of n-alkanes is maximum in IC112417 and relatively low in EC38825. Scanning electron microscopic views were also taken for epicuticular layers and their hydrocarbons of the leaves of all the genotype species of the plant. Qualitative and quantitative characterization of n-alkanes present in the epicuticular wax extracted from the mature leaves can be used as an effective tool in chemo taxonomical work and also for the study of genotypic variation of the different cultivars.  相似文献

The composition of the epicuticular n‐alkanes isolated from the leaves of ten populations of Juniperus communis L. var. saxatilis Pallas from central (continental) and western (coastal) areas of the Balkan Peninsula was characterized by GC‐FID and GC/MS analyses. In the leaf waxes, 14 n‐alkane homologues with chain‐lengths ranging from C22 to C35 were identified. All samples were dominated by n‐tritriacontane (C33), but differences in two other dominant n‐alkanes allowed separating the coastal from the continental populations. Several statistical methods (ANOVA, principal component, discriminant, and cluster analyses as well as the Mantel test) were deployed to analyze the diversity and variability of the epicuticular‐leaf‐n‐alkane patterns of the ten natural populations of J. communis var. saxatilis and their relation to different geographic and bioclimatic parameters. Cluster analysis showed a high correlation of the leaf‐n‐alkane patterns with the geographical distribution of the investigated samples, differentiating the coastal from the continental populations of this taxon. Several bioclimatic parameters related to aridity were highly correlated with this differentiation.

The mosses Andreaea rupestris, Pogonatum aloides and P. urnigerum contain surface waxes in amounts of 0.05–0.12% dry wt. The waxes consisted of esters (C38-C54), primary alcohols (C20-C32), free fatty acids (C16-C30), and alkanes (C21-C31). Additionally, aldehydes (C22-C30) were major constituents in the wax of P. urnigerum. The classes and their chain length distributions in the surface waxes of these mosses are comparable to those of epicuticular waxes of higher plants.  相似文献

The epicuticular wax covering on plant surface plays important roles in protecting plants against UV radiation. However, the role of epicuticular wax in affecting leaf gas exchange under enhanced ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation remains obscure. In the present study, different aged leaves of Brassica napus were used to analyze the responses of crystal structure and chemical constituents of epicuticular wax to UV-B radiation and the effects of such responses on gas exchange indices. Enhanced UV-B radiation significantly decreased the amount of esters in all leaves except the first leaf, amount of secondary alcohols in the second, third and fourth leaves, and amount of primary alcohols in the second and third leaves, while increased the amounts of ketones and aldehydes in the first leaf. Enhanced UV-B level had no significant effect on the amounts of alkanes and total wax in all leaves. Exposure to UV-B radiation resulted in wax fusion on adaxial leaf and stomata opening on abaxial leaf. Fusions of plates and rods on adaxial leaf surface covered most of the stomata, thereby influencing the photosynthesis in the upper mesophyll of leaves. Enhanced UV-B level significantly reduced the net photosynthesis rate (P N) but increased the stomata conductance (g s), concentrations of intercellular CO2 (C i ), and transpiration rate (E) in all leaves. Both UV-B radiation and the wax fusion induced by enhanced UV-B radiation resulted in different stomata status on abaxial and adaxial leaf surface, causing decrease of P N, and increase of g s, C i and E in leaves.  相似文献

Naturally occurring macromolecules present at the epicuticular wax/stalk tissue interface of sugarcane were investigated using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Investigations of water, cellulose, and wax‐cellulose interrelationships were possible using NIRS methods, where in the past many different techniques have been required. The sugarcane complex interface was used as an example of typical phenomena found at plant leaf/stalk interfaces. This detailed study showed that sugarcane cultivars exhibit spectral differences in the CHn, water OH, and cellulose OH regions, reflecting the presence of epicuticular wax, epidermis, and ground tissue. Spectrally complex water bands (5276 cm?1 and 7500–6000 cm?1) were investigated via freeze‐drying experiments which revealed sequentially a complex band substructure (7500–6000 cm?1), a developing weak H‐bonding system (~7301 cm?1), and strong H‐bonding (~7062 cm?1) assigned to water—cellulose interactions. Principal component analysis techniques clarified complex band trends that developed during the desorption experiment. Bands from wax‐free stalk were minimized in the 4327–4080 cm?1 region (C? Hn vibrational modes associated with long chain fatty compounds), while bands from the stalk tissue (particularly lignin and moisture) became more pronounced. Nocardomycolic acids from Nocardia rubra were fully separated and characterized by a combination of argentation thin-layer chromatography and gas chromatography — mass spectrometry (GCMS). The occurrence of 20 or more different molecular species of mycolic acids was demonstrated. GCMS analysis of each subclass of mycolic acids after separation on AgNO3 thin-layer chromatography revealed that in general the major species consisted of the even-carbon mycolic acids ranging from C38 to C52. However, the most abundant species differed by the subclasses; C44 being in saturated, C46 in monoenoic and C46 in dienoic mycolic acids, respectively. All these acids were shown to possess C12 or C14 alkyl branch at 2 position, while double bonds were located in longer straight chain alkyl unit.By using this method, distinctive changes in mycolic acid composition by growth temperature were observed. The ratios of saturated, monoenoic to dienoic mycolic acids in a mixture of certain carbon numbered mycolic acids varied greatly, according to the shift of growth temperature. The mass fragmentographic analysis, monitoring M-15 ions derived from the loss of methyl group from the molecular ions showed the lower temperature (15°C) grown cells contained more unsaturated (especially dienoic) mycolic acids, while the higher temperature (40°C) grown cells contained more saturated mycolic acids in both extractable and cell-wall bound lipids. These changes in mycolic acid composition occurred shortly after shifting up the growth temperature from 20°C to 43°C at a logarithmic stage of the bacterial growth.  相似文献

Sixty-seven compounds were characterized in the wax of Sargassum fulvellum. Characteristic components were the 5-methylhexyl esters of octanoic, decanoic, lauric, myristic, palmitic, palmitoleic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic, and the 2-ethylhexyl esters of the same acids. The wax of S. fulvellum contains hydrocarbons (1.6%), esters (21.8%), free acids (74.9%) and free alcohols (0.3%). The principal free alcohols range in chain length only from C6 to C7.  相似文献

The composition of the epicuticular waxes from the adaxial and abaxial surfaces of peach leaves varies considerably during one season's growth. Triterpenoid acids are major components 84–95% of the waxes from the youngest leaves but the proportions of these constituents decrease as the leaves expand. The waxes from the abaxial surfaces of fully expanded leaves consist primarily of hydrocarbons (C22–C34) and triterpenoid acids, whereas the adaxial surface waxes also contain large proportions of primary alcohols (C26-C34) and esters (C42-C52). The latter include sitosteryl esters of hexacosanoic, octacosanoic and eicosanoic acids. Variations were also noted between fully expanded leaves of different ages, the abaxial surface waxes of the oldest leaves containing the highest proportions of hydrocarbons, whilst the wax from the adaxial surface of the corresponding leaves contained the largest amounts of esters, sitosterol and hydrocarbons.  相似文献

The major components of Sporobolus airoides wax were hydrocarbons (37%, C27–C33), those of Bouteloua curtipendula and Eragrostis trichoides waxes esters (28% and 31%, respectively) and those of Muhlenbergia wrightii wax free alcohols (57%, almost entirely C28). Free alcohols formed 22% of the wax from B. curtipendula, 19 % of the wax from E. trichoides and 10% of the wax from S. airoides; the compositions ranged from C26 to C32 with C32 the major component. These alcohol compositions are similar to those found for other species in the subfamily Eragrostoideae. The esters contain 32–46% of acylated triterpenols, principally α- and β-amyrins. Aldehydes were present in all the waxes except for that from S. airoides.  相似文献
