Responses of apple leaf stomata to environmental factors   总被引:5,自引:4,他引:1
Abstract. Stomatal conductances ( g s) were measured on the leaves of 3–4 year old Golden Delicious trees and of seedlings of two other cultivars. Measurements were made on container grown trees in the field with a diffusion porometer in 1975 and 1976, and in controlled conditions in a leaf chamber in the laboratory in 1976. Stomatal densities in the Golden Delicious leaves were assessed from scanning electron micrographs. Stomatal density on extension shoot leaves was higher than on other leaf types after June.
The response to irradiance shown by both the porometer and the leaf chamber results could be described by a rectangular hyperbola: where g max is maximum conductance and β indicates the sensitivity of gs to photon influx density ( Q p). The values of β were in the range 60–90 μmol m−2 s−1.
There was no evidence that apple stomata are sensitive to temperature per se, but g s was reduced by increasing leaf to air vapour pressure deficits ( D ). There was a linear relationship between g s and D which was not attributable to feed-back to leaf water potential (ψL) as the latter did not affect g s until a threshold of about −2.0 to −2.5 MPa was reached. Conductance generally declined with increasing ambient CO2 concentration.  相似文献

The effects of sodium fluoride (0.3, 5 and 10 m M NaF) on root hydraulic conductivity, and gas exchange processes were examined in aspen ( Populus tremuloides Michx.) seedlings grown in solution culture. A long-term exposure of roots to NaF significantly decreased root hydraulic conductivity ( L p) and stomatal conductance ( g s). Root absorbed NaF significantly affected electrolyte leakage in leaf tissues and substantially restricted leaf expansion. NaF did not significantly affect leaf chlorophyll contents but decreased net photosynthesis ( P n). A short-term exposure of excised roots to 5 m M NaF and KF significantly decreased root water flow ( Q v) with a concomitant decline in root respiration and reduced g s when applied through intact roots or excised stems. The same molar concentration of NaCl also decreased Q v and g s in intact seedlings, but to a lesser extent than NaF or KF, and did not significantly affect root respiration. The results suggest that fluoride metabolically inhibited Q v or L p, probably by affecting water channel activity. We suggest that the metabolic inhibition of L p by root-absorbed fluoride affected gas exchange and leaf expansion in aspen seedlings.  相似文献

Stomata respond to increasing leaf-to-air vapour pressure difference (LAVPD) ( D ) by closing. The mechanism by which this occurs is debated. A role for feedback and peristomatal transpiration has been proposed. In this paper, we apply a recent mechanistic model of stomatal behaviour, and compare model and experimental data for the influence of increasing D on stomatal conductance.
We manipulated cuticular conductance ( g c) by three independent methods. First, we increased g c by using a solvent mixture applied to both leaf surfaces prior to determining stomatal responses to D ; second, we increased g c by increasing leaf temperature at constant D ; and third, we coated a small area of leaf with a light oil to decrease g c. In all three experiments, experimental data and model outputs showed very close agreement.
We conclude, from the close agreement between model and experimental data and the fact that manipulations of g c, and hence cuticular transpiration, influenced g s in ways consistent with a feedback mechanism, that feedback is central in determining stomatal responses to D .  相似文献

Abstract. Poplar shoots ( Populus euramericana L.) obtained from cuttings were exposed for 6 or 8 weeks to NH3 concentrations of 50 and 100 μgm−3 or filtered air in fumigation chambers. After this exposure the rates of NH3 uptake, transpiration, CO2 assimilation and respiration of leaves were measured using a leaf chamber. During the long-term exposure also modulated chlorophyll fluorescence measurements were carried out to obtain information about the photosynthetic performance of individual leaves. Both fluorescence and leaf chamber measurements showed a higher photosynthetic activity of leaves exposed to 100 μg NH3 m−3. These leaves showed also a larger leaf conductance and a larger uptake rate of NH3 than leaves exposed to 50 μg m−3 NH3 or filtered air. The long-term NH3 exposure did not induce an internal resistance against NH3 transport in the leaf, nor did it affect the leaf cuticle. So, not only at a short time exposure, but also at a long-term exposure NH3 uptake into leaves can be calculated from data on the boundary layer and stomatal resistance for H2O and ambient NH3-concentration. Furthermore, the NH3 exposure had no effect on the relation between CO2-assimilation and stomatal conductance, indicating that NH3 in concentrations up to 100 μg m−3 has no direct effect on stomatal behaviour; for example, by affecting the guard or contiguous cells of the stomata.  相似文献

Seasonal and diurnal measurements of leaf water potential (ψ1), relative water content (RWC) and stomatal conductance (gs) were made in the field on 19-year old Prunus salicina (L.) cv. Santa Rosa, a deciduous fruit tree species, irrigated with 3 different concentrations of saline water over a 3 year period (1985-1987). With the exception of stage III of fruit growth, little or no treatment difference in Φ1, leaf turgor potential (Φp), or RWC was noted during the day. Seasonal averages of morning (0700-0900) and afternoon (1500-1700) Φp did not decline with increasing salinity, indicating long-term osmotic adjustment in this species. Maintenance of leaf water status under saline conditions was in part a consequence of increased stomatal closure, with a subsequent reduction in leaf transpiration rate. However, during stage III of fruit growth, an increase in mean afternoon (1200-1700) stomatal conductance of 26-117%, independent of salinity treatment, was observed in 1985 and again in 1987. Higher conductance values during this period may be associated with rapid fruit expansion and greater assimilate demand. The observed increase in conductance resulted in greater leaf water loss and larger measured differences in midday ψ1 between salinity treatments. This research indicates that for Prunus salicina in the field, salinity stress resulted in leaf water deficits only during the final period of fruit expansion and ripening.  相似文献

The study examined the relationships between whole tree hydraulic conductance ( K tree) and the conductance in roots ( K root) and leaves ( K leaf) in loblolly pine trees. In addition, the role of seasonal variations in K root and K leaf in mediating stomatal control of transpiration and its response to vapour pressure deficit ( D ) as soil-dried was studied. Compared to trunk and branches, roots and leaves had the highest loss of conductivity and contributed to more than 75% of the total tree hydraulic resistance. Drought altered the partitioning of the resistance between roots and leaves. As soil moisture dropped below 50%, relative extractable water (REW), K root declined faster than K leaf. Although K tree depended on soil moisture, its dynamics was tempered by the elongation of current-year needles that significantly increased K leaf when REW was below 50%. After accounting for the effect of D on g s, the seasonal decline in K tree caused a 35% decrease in g s and in its sensitivity to D , responses that were mainly driven by K leaf under high REW and by K root under low REW. We conclude that not only water stress but also leaf phenology affects the coordination between K tree and g s and the acclimation of trees to changing environmental conditions.  相似文献

Stomatal response to humidity: implications for transpiration   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Abstract. Transpiration rates from apple leaves are analysed in terms of the ratio of latent heat flux (λ E ) to leaf net radiation ( Q 1) and the climatological resistance ( ri ). Increases in stomatal resistance with increasing leaf to air vapour pressure gradient ( D ), described by an empirical model, are incorporated in the analysis. This humidity effect causes the proportion of energy dissipated as latent heat to fall as Q 1 increases, so that leaf transpiration rates in high energy environments are likely to be similar to those in lower energy environments. Boundary layer resistance ( r a) exerts an increasingly important effect on transpiration rates as Q 1 increases. At constant Q 1 stomatal closure in response to increasing D results in very small changes in leaf temperature ( T 1) across a wide range of ambient vapour pressure deficits (δ e ); r a is then the major factor determining T 1. The implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献

Drought and salinity (i.e. soil water stress) are the main environmental factors limiting photosynthesis and respiration and, consequently, plant growth. This review summarizes the current status of knowledge on photosynthesis and respiration under water stress. It is shown that diffusion limitations to photosynthesis under most water stress conditions are predominant, involving decreased mesophyll conductance to CO2, an important but often neglected process. A general failure of photochemistry and biochemistry, by contrast, can occur only when daily maximum stomatal conductance ( g s) drops below 0.05–0.10 mol H2O m−2 s−1. Because these changes are preceded by increased leaf antioxidant activities ( g s below 0.15–0.20 mol H2O m−2 s−1), it is suggested that metabolic responses to severe drought occur indirectly as a consequence of oxidative stress, rather than as a direct response to water shortage. As for respiration, it is remarkable that the electron partitioning towards the alternative respiration pathway sharply increases at the same g s threshold, although total respiration rates are less affected. Despite the considerable improvement in the understanding of plant responses to drought, several gaps of knowledge are highlighted which should become research priorities for the near future. These include how respiration and photosynthesis interact at severe stress, what are the boundaries and mechanisms of photosynthetic acclimation to water stress and what are the factors leading to different rates of recovery after a stress period.  相似文献

Stomatal density (SD) and stomatal conductance ( g s) can be affected by an increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration. This study was conducted on 17 species growing in a naturally enriched CO2 spring and belonging to three plant communities. Stomatal conductance, stomatal density and stomatal index (SI) of plants from the spring, which were assumed to have been exposed for generations to elevated [CO2], and of plants of the same species collected in a nearby control site, were compared. Stomatal conductance was significantly lower in most of the species collected in the CO2 spring and this indicated that CO2 effects on g s are not of a transitory nature but persist in the long term and through plant generations. Such a decrease was, however, not associated with changes in the anatomy of leaves: SD was unaffected in the majority of species (the decrease was only significant in three out of the 17 species examined), and also SI values did not vary between the two sites with the exception of two species that showed increased SI in plants grown in the CO2-enriched area. These results did not support the hypothesis that long-term exposure to elevated [CO2] may cause adaptive modification in stomatal number and in their distribution.  相似文献

Recent research in whole-plant stomatal physiology, conducted largely with potted plants in controlled environments, suggests that stomatal conductance ( g s) might be more closely linked to plant chemical variables than to hydraulic variables. To test this in a field situation, seasonal g s was examined in relation to a number of plant and environmental variables in 11 temperate, deciduous forest tree species. Stomatal conductance was generally better correlated with environmental variables (air temperature, vapor pressure deficit, PPFD) than with plant variables, and slightly better correlated with plant hydraulic variables (shoot water and osmotic potentials) than with plant chemical variables (xylem sap ABA concentration, xylem sap pH). We examined a model, developed previously for maize, which describes regulation of g s by xylem sap ABA concentration with leaf water status acting to modify stomatal sensitivity to the ABA signal. This model explained slightly more variation in seasonal g s in the forest trees than did single plant variables but not more variation than most single environmental variables. Response surface models, especially those incorporating environmental variables, were more consistently successful at explaining g s across species.  相似文献

The responses of steady-state CO2 assimilation rate (A), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (gs) to changes in leaf-to-air vapour pressure difference (δW) on one hand and to increasing soil drought on the other hand were examined in 2-year-old seedlings of Pseudotsuga menziesii, Pseudotsuga macrocarpa and Cedrus atlantica. Analysing the data through A vs intercellular CO2 molar fraction (ci) graphs, we could determine stomatal and mesophyll contributions to changes in A as δW or soil drought were increased. Increasing soil drought affected gs and mesophyll photosynthesis independently, since clearly distinct predawn leaf water potential (ψp) regions appeared in which either stomatal or mesophyll effects prevailed for explaining the changes in A. The two Pseudotsuga species exhibited a large ψP range (between ca -0.8 and -1.5 to -1.9 MPa) in which only stomata were responsible for the decrease in A. A dramatic decline in mesophyll photosynthesis was noticed starting from values as high as -1.2 MPa ( C. atlantica ), -1.5 MPa ( P. macrocarpa ) and -1.9 MPa ( P. menziesii ). Increasing ΔW at high soil water content led to a sharp decline in A primarily due to an alteration of mesophyll photosynthesis. Stomatal conductance for CO2 diffusion was affected in a lesser extent and in close correlation with the changes in mesophyll photosynthesis, which could suggest the existence of a functional linkage between mesophyll photosynthesis and stomata. Surprisingly, the drought resistant P. macrocarpa exhibited the least conservative water use efficiency in response to the two types of drought. In this species drought adaptation seems to be mainly due to its high root growth and soil prospection ability.  相似文献

Abstract Acetobacterium woodii was continuously grown on 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoate as pure culture or in commensalistic combination with Pelobacter acidigallici and Desulfobacter postgatei . Under pure culture conditions the following growth parameters were determined: μ max= 0.112 h−1, K s= 1.07 mM, Y max= 35 g/mol, and m = 0.22 mmol·g−1·h−1. In coculture with P. acidigallici the affinity for the substrate increased and the K s value was found to be 135 μM. Under batch culture conditions mixed populations of A. woodii, P. acidigallici , and D. postgatei completely mineralized 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoate to CO2, whereas under continuous culture conditions more than 3 mM acetate remained unused.  相似文献

Abstract. Factors affecting stomatal conductance (g1) of pearl millet ( Pennisetum americanum [L.] Leeke), cultivar BJ 104, were examined in the field in India during the dry season.
Diurnal changes in g1 were evaluated for upper expanded leaves at flowering on two occasions using plants subjected to varying degrees of water stress. Except for the most severely stressed treatment, diurnal changes in g1 closely matched changes in irradiance ( I ), the promotive effect of which largely overcame opposing influences on g1 of increasing atmospheric vapour pressure deficit, and decreasing leaf water and turgor potentials (Ψ, Ψp).
Two main effects of water stress on g1 were evident: (i) a decrease in the amplitude of the mid-day peak in g1, and (ii) a decrease in the time over which high g1 was maintained, resulting in early (mid-day) closure and hysteresis in the relationship between g1 and I .
Leaf conductance was greatest for upper leaves and decreased down the canopy. At equivalent depths in the canopy g1 was higher in flowering than in photoperiodically-retarded plants of the same age. The magnitude of water stress-induced stomatal closure increased down the plant, and was more marked in retarded than in flowering plants.
Within individual stress treatments Ψ of upper leaves decreased linearly as transpiration flux increased. It is concluded that stomatal behaviour of upper leaves of pearl millet at flowering largely operates to maximize assimilation rather than to minimize water loss.  相似文献

Standard metabolic rate ( R s) at 2°C of eight East Siberian cod Arctogadus borisovi , caught in West Greenland, body mass of 601.5 ± 147.6 g (mean ± s.D.), was 40.9 ± 5.9 mg O2 kg-1 h-1 and 59.0 ± 6.6mg O2 kg-1 h-1 when extrapolated to a standardized 100 g fish. R s was compared with three other Gadidae, to test the theory of metabolic cold adaptation (MCA). There was no evidence of MCA in the family.  相似文献

Leaf water potentials below threshold values result in reduced stomatal conductance (gs). Stomatal closure at low leaf water potentials may serve to protect against cavitation of xylem. Possible control of gs by leaf water potential or hydraulic conductance was tested by drying the rooting medium in four herbaceous annual species until gs was reduced and then lowering the [CO2] to determine whether gs and transpiration rate could be increased and leaf water potential decreased and whether hydraulic conductance was reduced at the resulting lower leaf water potential. In all species, low [CO2] could reverse the stomatal closure because of drying despite further reductions in leaf water potential, and the resulting lower leaf water potentials did not result in reductions in hydraulic conductance. The relative sensitivity of gs to internal [CO2] in the leaves of dry plants of each species averaged three to four times higher than in leaves of wet plants. Two species in which gs was reputed to be insensitive to [CO2] were examined to determine whether high leaf to air water vapor pressure differences (D) resulted in increased stomatal sensitivity to [CO2]. In both species, stomatal sensitivity to [CO2] was indeed negligible at low D, but increased with D, and low [CO2] partly or fully reversed closure caused by high D. In no case did low leaf water potential or low hydraulic conductance during drying of the air or the rooting medium prevent low [CO2] from increasing gs and transpiration rate.  相似文献

Abstract. Gas exchange measurements were made on single leaves of three C3 and one C4 species at air speeds of 0.4 and 4.0 m s−1 to determine if boundary layer conductance substantially affected the substomatal pressure of carbon dioxide. Boundary layer conductances to water vapour were 0.4 to 0.5 mol m−2 s−1 at the lower air speed, and 1.2 to 1.5 mol m−2 s−1 at the higher air speed. Substomatal carbon dioxide pressures were about 5 Pa lower at low boundary layer conductance in the C3 species, and about 3 Pa lower in the C4 species when measurements were made at high and moderate photosynthetic photon flux densities. No evidence of stomatal adjustment to altered boundary layer conductance was found. Photosynthetic rates at high photon flux densities were reduced by about 20% at the low air speed in the C3 species. The commonly reported values of substomatal carbon dioxide pressure for C3 and C4 species were found to occur only when measurements were made at the higher air speed.  相似文献

We developed and applied an ecosystem-scale model that calculated leaf CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance, chloroplast CO2 concentration and the carbon isotope composition of carbohydrate formed during photosynthesis separately for sunlit and shaded leaves within multiple canopy layers. The ecosystem photosynthesis model was validated by comparison to leaf-level gas exchange measurements and estimates of ecosystem-scale photosynthesis from eddy covariance measurements made in a coastal Douglas-fir forest on Vancouver Island. A good agreement was also observed between modelled and measured δ 13C values of ecosystem-respired CO2 ( δ R). The modelled δ R values showed strong responses to variation in photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), air temperature, vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and available soil moisture in a manner consistent with leaf-level studies of photosynthetic 13C discrimination. Sensitivity tests were conducted to evaluate the effect of (1) changes in the lag between the time of CO2 fixation and the conversion of organic matter back to CO2; (2) shifts in the proportion of autotrophic and heterotrophic respiration; (3) isotope fractionation during respiration; and (4) environmentally induced changes in mesophyll conductance, on modelled δ R values. Our results indicated that δ R is a good proxy for canopy-level C c/ C a and 13C discrimination during photosynthetic gas exchange, and therefore has several applications in ecosystem physiology.  相似文献

The immission-response effect of five low levels of sulfur dioxide on net photosynthesis and transpiration was studied during continuous measurements in near-complete life cycles of whole bean plants ( Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Processer) grown in a controlled environment. Sixteen plants were grown in individual water cultures in each of five 100 1 glass assimilation chambers with a new type of exposure system with separate root aeration. SO2 immission ranged from 10 μg m−3 to 950 μg m−3 during 12-h day-time exposure periods, five days a week, while a low, natural background of NOx was accepted.
The SO2-induced photosynthetic reductions were in the short term, but in particular on the long-term level very closely related with stomatal conductance (significance level better than 0.0005). However, a causal coherence was not inferred. Physiological inhibitions were composed of: (1) A reversible component (night and week-end recovery) and (2) an irreversible component (related to reduced green leaf area). The pattern of leaf growth was studied, with the conclusion that SO2 reduced leaf area by promoting senescence, rather than by interfering with leaf emergence and development.  相似文献

The transpiration of a mature beech ( Fagus sylvatica L.) forest was measured over a whole season by the heat pulse velocity technique and the results analysed in terms of a new analytical canopy conductance model, which takes into account the effects of partial decoupling from the atmosphere on the local humidity environment experienced by the canopy. Stand daily transpiration ranged from 0·62 to 2·97 mm d–1, with a seasonal mean value of 1·97 mm d–1. Maximum canopy conductance was 18·5 mm s–1, with a mean estimated value of 5·0 mm s–1; computed values were little affected by the assumption of neutral atmospheric conditions. The decoupling coefficient Ω varied greatly on a daily and seasonal basis, with an average value of 0·28. As a result of partial decoupling, the estimated vapour pressure deficit at the notional canopy surface exceeded the values measured above the canopy by 380 Pa on average. When correctly expressed in terms of humidity at the canopy surface, the model explained 80% of the variance in half-hourly transpiration measurements. Upon cross-validation it still explained 72% of the variance, as compared to only 40% when correction for partial decoupling was not introduced. A baseline canopy conductance of 0·7 mm s–1, not modulated by the environment, was estimated. The implications of the model are discussed for the representation of canopy conductance and transpiration of broad-leaf forests.  相似文献

Using a laboratory-constructed system that can measure the gas exchange rates of two leaf surfaces separately, the light responses of the adaxial and abaxial stomata in intact leaves of sunflower ( Helianthus annuus L.) were investigated, keeping the intercellular CO2 concentration ( C i) at 300  µ L L−1. When evenly illuminating both sides of the leaf, the stomatal conductance ( g s) of the abaxial surface was higher than that of the adaxial surface at any light intensity. When each surface of the leaf was illuminated separately, both the adaxial and abaxial stomata were more sensitive to the light transmitted through the leaf (self-transmitted light) than to direct illumination. Relationships between the whole leaf photosynthetic rate ( A n) and the g s for each side highlighted a strong dependence of stomatal opening on mesophyll photosynthesis. Light transmitted through another leaf was more effective than the direct white light for the abaxial stomata, but not for the adaxial stomata. Moreover, green monochromatic light induced an opening of the abaxial stomata, but not of the adaxial stomata. As the proportion of blue light in the transmitted light is less than that in the white light, there may be some uncharacterized light responses, which are responsible for the opening of the abaxial stomata by the transmitted, green light.  相似文献
