During the preparation of a World Rubiaceae Checklist , numerous unplaced taxa were encountered, including illegitimate and invalid names, and species for which generic placement is uncertain. In this contribution, 35 new combinations and 20 new names are proposed, and the names of three taxa are validated.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 157 , 115–124.  相似文献

Anthoxanthum alpinum Löve & Löve has been described as a diploid perennial distributed in northern Eurasia and the high mountains of central and eastern Europe. Difficulties in finding reliable morphological differences between this taxon and the widespread tetraploid Anthoxanthum odoratum L. have resulted in taxonomists treating them as conspecific, despite the cytological differentiation. The purpose of this study was to use different approaches to assess the relationships between close congeners, such as the pair A. odoratum / A. alpinum . Macromorphological, micromorphological, and molecular data were gathered and analysed for 14 populations representing both taxa from Scandinavia and the Iberian Peninsula. Different cluster analyses were performed to study the relatedness between individuals and populations. Subsequently, a principal components analysis was computed on the basis of macromorphological quantitative traits, and principal coordinates analysis was used to analyse qualitative, micromorphological, and random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) data. An analysis of molecular variance was applied to the molecular data, and the genetic differentiation between samples was measured using the F ST estimator. The results showed that the geographical origin was more important than the ploidy level in explaining the relatedness between specimens and populations. Moreover, a strong correlation was found between the micromorphological traits and environmental parameters. The results of the analyses do not support the assignment of a specific taxonomic rank to A. alpinum .  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 156 , 237–252.  相似文献

Paradoris , traditionally a generic taxon of discodorid sea slugs, is revised for the first time. One hundred and thirty specimens were examined, including all types and most of the nontype specimens available. New records for Paradoris are provided: South Africa, Tanzania, Seychelles, Western Australia, Thailand, Philippines, shallow waters of New Caledonia, southern Japan, and Hawaii. The individual variation of all taxonomic characters is thoroughly evaluated. Prior to the present study, Paradoris included 15 nominal species: 12 valid names and three synonyms. Three additional names, Discodoris erythraeensis , D. lora , and D. cavernae , are re-allocated to Paradoris , based on phylogenetic analysis. A phylogenetic diagnosis is provided for Paradoris : in particular, two new synapomorphies are described. Eight species names are regarded as valid: P. araneosa , P. dubia , P. erythraeensis , P. indecora , P. liturata , P. lopezi , P. mulciber , and P. tsurugensis . However, most of these species are poorly known, i.e. from very few specimens, and their taxonomic status might change when more individuals are available. P. lora is regarded as a nomen dubium . Six new synonymies are proposed, and explained by the fact that: (1) species names were created for one or a few specimens, without considering individual variation; (2) authors have not worked within a phylogenetic framework and have created new species names without considering all the existing species names already available within Paradoris . Three new morphospecies are described, but not formally named because their taxonomic status is still uncertain for several reasons (e.g. lack of knowledge of individual variation for some critical features).  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 147 , 125–238.  相似文献

Dubois recently suggested that Linnean taxa should be quoted with the year of publication only, rather than with the author ± year of publication. This would reduce the perceived artificial nomenclatural inflation produced by new synonyms. We do not consider this inflation a problem and recommend the maintenance of the current methodology. This has several advantages over that suggested by Dubois, including easy identification of taxa introduced by splitters, which are known by name, not year of publication; managers of systematic facilities expect to see their institute's papers cited; most systematists are dead, but recognition of their efforts is fitting; and a complete reference of author and year supports the best scholarship. Present and future systematists would be better served if Dubois' recommendation was not implemented. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 96 , 709–711.  相似文献

Leptolaena Thouars is one of the first described genera within Sarcolaenaceae, but represents the last great species-level taxonomic challenge in this endemic Malagasy plant family. As currently circumscribed, this genus comprises three subgenera, two of which, Mediusella Cavaco and Xerochlamys (Baker) Cavaco, exhibit patterns of morphological variation that have been understood differently and have led to an unstable taxonomy, such that a consensus on the delimitation of species has yet to be reached. Principal component analysis of morphological characters was performed on 211 herbarium specimens in order to evaluate the morphological variation within the two subgenera and to clarify historically problematical species boundaries. The results showed that ten entities could be distinguished on the basis of vegetative, floral, and fruit characters, and that they provide a robust basis for proposing a new species-level taxonomic framework.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 157 , 559–574.  相似文献

A treatment of the Rubiaceae of Angola is presented based on herbarium collections kept at BM, BR, COI, K, LISC, LISU, LUA, LUAI, P, and PRE. The basionyms, relevant synonyms, and types from Angola are cited. For each taxon, one collection is cited for each province. An exsiccata list with over 3300 collections examined and identified during this work is provided. There are 108 genera, 422 species, and 40 infraspecific taxa of Rubiaceae in Angola. Fourteen genera and 126 species and infraspecific taxa are restricted to Cabinda. The rate of endemism of the family is c. 19%, with 86 taxa endemic to Angola (16 of which are restricted to Cabinda). Two genera are endemic. A new subspecies and a new variety are described. There are 21 unnamed entities requiring further research. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 156 , 537–638.  相似文献

The species of Goniothalamus (Annonaceae) occurring in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore are revised, updating the previous taxonomic treatment by James Sinclair, published in 1955. A total of 18 species is recognized, including a new species, G. tomentosus . Collections referrable to G. tomentosus were previously determined as ' G. marcanii '; examination of the types of G. marcanii reveals that the two taxa are not conspecific, however, and a new name is accordingly validated here. Goniothalamus tomentosus has closest affinities with the Javan/Sumatran species G. costulatus . Other important nomenclatural changes include the reduction of G. umbrosus to synonymy with G. tapis .  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2003, 142 , 321−339.  相似文献

Although physical features of the environment are known to influence shape, to date, the effects of many environmental conditions on asymmetry remain unexamined. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between asymmetry and the fluid media (air versus water) that an organism inhabits and, subsequently, to use these findings to test a novel hypothesis that fluid environments can impose selective forces acting to constrain asymmetry to maintain or enhance biomechanical function. We examined carapace asymmetry in 114 species (69 aquatic and 45 terrestrial) from the chelonian superfamily Testudinoidea. The results obtained indicate that environment is correlated with the degree of asymmetry, but in different directions for the two clades that comprise the Testudinoidea. Within the Testuguria, aquatic turtles have lower levels of asymmetry than terrestrial turtles, which is consistent with our proposed biomechanical hypothesis. This pattern was not observed within the Emydidae, possibly due to the much shorter time that terrestrial taxa in this clade have existed. Nevertheless, the present study provides the first evidence for a relationship between fluid media and asymmetry in any taxonomic group.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 483–489.  相似文献

A new species of Betulaceae, Betula fujianensis , is described and illustrated from Luoboyan Reserve, Fujian Province, south-eastern China. Betula fujianensis is distributed in subtropical evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved mixed forest at elevations above 500 m, mostly as scattered individuals and occasionally as populations alone or with B. luminifera . Betula fujianensis belongs to section Betulaster and differs from other species in general morphology and phenology. A key to all species currently recognized in this section is presented, and the relationships between the new species and its closely related taxa are discussed.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 156 , 523–528.  相似文献

A treatment of the Rubiaceae of Cabinda (Angola) is presented based on various herbarium collections. There are 67 genera and 169 species of Rubiaceae represented in the flora of Cabinda. Eight entities are unnamed and could represent new taxa. Identification keys are provided for species and infraspecific taxa. A new combination is made in Rothmannia and two are made in Psychotria. A new name is provided in Psychotria . Eighteen taxa are endemic to Cabinda, two of which are also endemic to Angola. The conservation status of the endemic taxa is unknown due to the lack of collections over the last 40 years. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 154 , 455–495.  相似文献

A comprehensive taxonomic revision of Goniothalamus species (Annonaceae) occurring in Thailand is presented for the first time. Twenty-five species are recognized, including three that are described as new to science ( Goniothalamus aurantiacus from South-Western Thailand, Goniothalamus maewongensis from Northern Thailand, and Goniothalamus rongklanus from Northern and North-Eastern Thailand). Several taxonomic and nomenclatural misunderstandings are corrected. The name G. griffithii is shown to be widely misapplied for populations in Northern Thailand, for which the name G. calvicarpus should be applied; 'true' G. griffithii is restricted to South-Western Thailand and Myanmar. In addition, the widely used name G. marcanii is shown to be a synonym of G. tamirensis , and the name G. latestigma , previously regarded as a synonym of G. undulatus , is reinstated. Goniothalamus cheliensis is furthermore newly recorded from Thailand. Most species are restricted to Peninsular Thailand and represent a Malesian floristic component.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 156 , 355–384.  相似文献
