Possible causes of the increased algal blooms in Lake Victoria in the 1980s have been disputed by several authors; some suggested a top-down effect by the introduced Nile perch, whereas others suggested a bottom-up effect due to eutrophication. In this article the potential impact is established of grazing by fish on phytoplankton densities, before the Nile perch upsurge and the concomitant algal blooms in the Mwanza Gulf. The biomass and trophic composition of fish in the sublittoral area of the Mwanza Gulf were calculated based on catch data from bottom trawls, and from gill nets covering the whole water column. Estimates of phytoplankton production in the same area were made from Secchi values and chlorophyll concentrations. The total phytoplankton intake by fish was estimated at 230 mg DW m−2 day−1. The daily gross production ranged from 6,200 to 7,100 mg DW m−2 day−1 and the net production from 1,900 to 2,200 mg DW m−2 day−1. Thus, losses of phytoplankton through grazing by fish were about 3–4% of daily gross and 10–12% of daily net phytoplankton production. As a consequence it is unlikely that the phytoplankton blooms in the second half of the 1980s were due to a top-down effect caused by a strong decline in phytoplankton grazing by fish.  相似文献

1. Phytoplankton carbon assimilation and losses (exudation, dark carbon losses) as well as oxygen release and dark community respiration were measured regularly for 2 years at four stations along the lower Spree (Germany). Carbon balance of river phytoplankton was estimated using measured assimilation, metabolic losses and variations in algal carbon along a stretch of river. 2. The light/dark bottle method was modified to simulate vertical mixing. 3. Waxing and waning of phytoplankton populations dominated the load of particulate organic carbon as well as the oxygen budget of the river. 4. Phytoplankton assimilated 310–358 g C m?2 yr?1. A mean value of 586 mg C m?3 day?1 was fixed in photosynthesis, with 16.7 mg C being exuded during the day and 20.1 mg lost at night. The measured dark respiration was equivalent to only 28% of the daily gross oxygen production of the plankton community. Phytoplankton washed from upstream lakes and reservoirs was not measurably damaged by turbulent transport. 5. In spring, 18–22% of assimilated carbon was used for net biosynthesis of phytoplankton along the river course. At this time, the carbon balance of this part of the Spree was dominated by autochthonous net production. During summer, however, total carbon losses exceeded the intensive carbon assimilation. The decline of algal biomass along the river course in summer was not explicable by measurable physiological losses. The importance of sedimentation and grazing losses is discussed.  相似文献

We report here the results of an experimental study designed to compare algal responses to short-term manipulations of zooplankton in three California lakes which encompass a broad range of productivity (ultra-oligotrophic Lake Tahoe, mesotrophic Castle Lake, and strongly eutrophic Clear Lake). To assess the potential strength of grazing in each lake, we evaluated algal responses to a 16-fold range of zooplankton biomass. To better compare algal responses among lakes, we determined algal responses to grazing by a common grazer (Daphnia sp.) over a range ofDaphnia densities from 1 to 16 animals per liter. Effects of both ambient grazers andDaphnia were strong in Castle Lake. However, neither ambient zooplankton norDaphnia had much impact on phytoplankton in Clear Lake. In Lake Tahoe, no grazing impacts could be demonstrated for the ambient zooplankton butDaphnia grazing had dramatic effects. These results indicate weak coupling between phytoplankton and zooplankton in Clear Lake and Lake Tahoe, two lakes which lie near opposite extremes of lake trophic status for most lakes. These observations, along with work reported by other researchers, suggest that linkages between zooplankton and phytoplankton may be weak in lakes with either extremely low or high productivity. Biomanipulation approaches to recover hypereutrophic lakes which aim only to alter zooplankton size structure may be less effective if algal communities are dominated by large, inedible phytoplankton taxa.  相似文献

Concentrations of dissolved silicate and particulate biogenic silicate were measured in three branches of the lower river Rhine in The Netherlands in order to analyse the role of this element in the eutrophication of the river basin. Particulate silicate followed the seasonal development of the phytoplankton, which was dominated by diatoms. The concentration of dissolved silicate fell during blooms (< 0.1 mg.l–1 ), but the amounts of biogenic silicate measured ( 1 mg.l–1) were insufficient to explain the seasonal decrease in the dissolved fraction; this indicates retention of silicate upstream. Some particulate biogenic silicate in river water settled in man-made sedimentation areas in the Rhine delta. The observations suggest that changes in silicate fixation in the Rhine may have contributed to the incidence of non-diatom phytoplankton blooms in receiving waters.  相似文献

Outbreak of blue-green algal blooms, with associated unsightly scum and unpleasant odor, occurs frequently in eutrophic lakes. We conducted feeding experiments to study ingestion and digestion of Microcystis aeruginosa by tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) under laboratory conditions and field testing to reduce Microcystis blooms by stocking tilapia in Lake Yuehu and other eutrophic waters in Ningbo, China between 2000 and 2003. Our results show that tilapia was capable of ingesting and digesting a large quantity of Microcystis. Digestion efficiency ranged from 58.6 to 78.1% at water temperature of 25 °C. Ingestion rate increased with increasing fish weight and water temperature. Intensive blooms occurred in Lake Yuehu in both 1999 and 2000. The lake was stocked with silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), bighead (Aristichthys nobilis) and a freshwater mussel (Hyriopsis cumingii) at a total biomass of 9.8 g m−3 in early 2001, and tilapia at 3–5 g m−3 in April of 2002. From June to October, average phytoplankton density decreased from 897.6×106 cells l−1 in 2000 to 291.7×106 cells l−1 in 2001 and 183.0×106 cells l−1 in 2002. Compared to 2000, the annual average phytoplankton biomass in 2001 and 2002 decreased by 48.6% and 63.8%, respectively. The blue-green algal biomass which made up 70% of the total phytoplankton biomass in 2000 was reduced to 22.1% in 2001 and 11.2% in 2002. Meanwhile, Secchi depth increased from 20–50 cm to 55–137 cm during the same time period. Similar results were observed in some other eutrophic waters. For example, algal bloom disappeared about 20 days after tilapia fingerlings were stocked (8–15 g m−3) to a pond in Zhenhai Park. Chlorophyll a concentration and phytoplankton production declined dramatically whereas water transparency increased substantially. However, the impacts of tilapia on nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics in natural lakes need further investigation. Our studies revealed that stocking tilapia is an effective way to control algal blooms in eutrophic waters, especially in lakes where nutrient loading cannot be reduced sufficiently, and where grazing by zooplankton cannot control phytoplankton production effectively.  相似文献

The species composition, biomass, abundance and species diversity of zooplankton were determined for samples collected from 12 stations in Sanmen Bay, China, in four cruises from August 2002 to May 2003. Growth of phytoplankton and grazing rates of microzooplankton were measured using the dilution technique. The spatial and temporal variation of zooplankton and its relationship with environmental factors were also analyzed. The results showed that a total of 89 species of zooplankton belonging to 67 genera and 16 groups of pelagic larvae were found in Sanmen Bay. The coastal low-saline species was the dominant ecotype in the study area, and the dominant species were Calanus sinicus, Labidocera euchaeta, Tortanus derjugini, Acartia pacifica, Pseudeuphausia sinica and Sagitta bedoti. Maximum biomass was recorded in August, followed by November and May, and the lowest biomass was recorded in February. Similarly, the highest abundance of zooplankton was observed in August, followed by May, November, and February. Grazing pressure of microzooplankton on phytoplankton in Sanmen Bay existed throughout the year, although the grazing rate of microzooplankton on phytoplankton varied with the season. Estimates for growth rate of phytoplankton ranged from 0.25 d?1 to 0.89 d?1, whereas grazing rate of microzooplankton ranged between 0.18 d?1 and 0.68 d?1 in different seasons. The growth rate of phytoplankton exceeded the grazing rate of microzooplankton in all the seasons. Grazing pressure of microzooplankton on phytoplankton ranged from 16.1% d?1 to 49.1% d?1, and the grazing pressure of microzooplankton on primary production of phytoplankton ranged from 58.3% d?1 to 83.6% d?1 in different seasons.  相似文献

The dilution technique was used to estimate chlorophyll and pheopigment, net and gross production as well as zooplankton grazing over a 12-month period in a coastal lagoon in Southern France. Chlorophyll a (Cha) based gross growth rates of phytoplankton ranged from undetectable in February to 2.6 day−1 in June, corresponding to 3.8 divisions per day. Cha-based grazing rates ranged from undetectable in February to 1.1 d−1 in June. The seasonal growth pattern of picoplankton was similar to that of the whole community, with a peak in July, corresponding to four divisions per day. Grazing processes represented from 20 to 150% of the phytoplankton daily growth, and the grazing pressure was stronger on small phytoplankton cells than on larger cells. Gross growth rates of phytoplankton were related to zooplankton grazing rates, and both were related to water temperature. Mesozooplankton which escaped sampling or oysters had to be also invoked as additional sinks for the primary production. In the fall, pheopigment concentrations greater than chlorophyll concentrations coincided with high ammonium levels in the water column. Pheopigment a production rates were highly correlated to chlorophyll -based microzooplankton grazing rates. The pheopigment a to chlorophyll a ratio was correlated with ammonium concentrations and could be used an index of the balance between ammonium supply (degradation) and demand (uptake by phytoplankton). In addition, pheopigment degradation rates in absence of grazing could be related to irradiance, indicating photo-degradation of these compounds.  相似文献

1. The taxonomic composition and biomass of the phytoplankton and the taxonomic composition of the phytobenthos of the San Joaquin River and its major tributaries were examined in relation to water chemistry, habitat and flow regime. Agricultural drainage and subsurface flow contribute to a complex gradient of salinity and nutrients in this eutrophic, ‘lowland type’ river. 2. Because of light‐limiting conditions for growth, maintenance demands of the algae exceed production during summer and autumn in the San Joaquin River where there is no inflow from tributaries. In contrast to substantial gains in concentration of inorganic nitrogen and soluble reactive phosphorus during the summer of normal‐flow years, net losses of algal biomass (2–4 μg L?1 day?1 chlorophyll a) occurred in a mid‐river segment with no significant tributary inflow. However, downstream of a large tributary draining the Sierra Nevada, a substantial net gain in algal biomass (6–11 μg L?1 day?1) occurred in the summer, but not in the spring (loss of 1–6 μg L?1 day?1) or autumn (loss of 2–5 μg L?1 day?1). 3. The phytoplankton was dominated in summer by ‘r‐selected’ centric diatoms (Thalassiosirales), species both tolerant of variable salinity and widely distributed in the San Joaquin River. Pennate diatoms were proportionally more abundant (in biomass) in the winter, spring and autumn. Abundant taxa included the diatoms Cyclotella meneghiniana, Skeletonema cf. potamos, Cyclostephanos invisitatus, Thalassiosira weissflogii, Nitzschia acicularis, N. palea and N. reversa, and the chlorophytes Chlamydomonas sp. and Scenesdesmus quadricauda. Patterns in the abundance of species indicated that assembly of the phytoplankton is limited more by light and flow regime than by nutrient supply. 4. The phytobenthos was dominated by larger, more slowly reproducing pennate diatoms. Few of the abundant species are euryhaline. The diatoms Navicula recens and Nitzschia inconspicua and cyanophytes, Oscillatoria spp., were the principal late‐summer benthic species upstream in the mainstem and in drainages of the San Joaquin Valley. Many of the other abundant diatoms (Amphora veneta, Bacillaria paxillifer, Navicula symmetrica, Nitzschia amphibia, N. fonticola, N. palea, Pleurosigma salinarum) of late‐summer assemblages in these segments also are motile species. While many of these species also were abundant in segments downstream of confluences with rivers draining the Sierra Nevada, the relative abundance of prostrate (Cocconeis placentula var. euglypta, Navicula minima) and erect or stalked (Achnanthidium deflexum, Achnanthes lanceolata, Gomphonema kobayasii, G. parvulum var. lagenula) diatoms and Stigeoclonium sp. was greater in these lower San Joaquin River segments. 5. A weighted‐averaging regression model, based on salinity and benthic‐algal abundance in the San Joaquin River and segments of its major tributaries within the San Joaquin Valley, yielded a highly significant coefficient‐of‐determination (r2=0.84) and low prediction error between salinity inferred from the species and that observed, indicating that salinity tolerance is a primary constraint on growth and assembly of the phytobenthos. The same measures of predictability indicated poor performance of a model based on inorganic nitrogen. However, with a greater representation of tributaries (including segments within the Sierra Nevada foothills) in the sample set, an inorganic nitrogen model also yielded a highly significant coefficient‐of‐determination (r2=0.87) and low prediction error between the species‐inferred and the observed concentration. As with the salinity model (r2=0.94) for the enlarged data set, a systematic difference (increased deviation of residuals) existed at high inorganic nitrogen concentrations. These results indicate substantial interaction between salinity and inorganic nitrogen as constraints on the structure of benthic‐algal communities of the San Joaquin River basin.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of pelagic mysids (Mysis mixta and M. relicta) on the biomass and size-structure of the phytoplankton community during the period following the spring bloom. Mysids excreted phosphate (4.5 ± 0.7 nmol ind−1 h−1) and ammonium (123.6 ± 31.6 and 45.0 ± 3.2 nmol ind−1 h−1) and increased the total chlorophyll-a concentration of phytoplankton slightly. However, the presence of mysids affected different size-classes of phytoplankton differently. Mysids mainly grazed on large-sized (>10 μm) phytoplankton cells. Small-sized (<10 μm) algal cells avoided grazing, gained a competitive advantage and were able to utilize the nutrients excreted by mysids. According to this study, both top-down and bottom-up mechanisms simultaneously mould the structure of the phytoplankton community. A large zooplankton biomass might promote the increase of small flagellates by a combination of repleting nutrient stores, selective grazing on large algal cells and heavy predation on protozoa which, consequently, might have a cascading effect on the most favoured protozoan food source, small flagellates.

SUMMARY. 1. Spatial and temporal variations in exoenzymatic proteolysis and alkaline phosphatase activity in the River Rhine were measured fluorometrically using L-leucyi (ß-naphthylamide and methylumbelliferyl phosphate (MUFP), respectively, as test substances.
2. Extracellular proteolytic activity measured in the lower 150-km reach of the river during 1988 followed the changes in the concentration of particulate nitrogen associated with the occurrence of phytoplankton blooms. Alkaline phosphatase activity was not related to the concentration of particulate phosphate and correlated weakly with particulate nitrogen and phytoplankton concentrations.
3. Seasonal observations (1989) in the lower River Rhine and transport studies in a 660-km-long reach of the river (1990) indicated that the variations in the exoenzyme activities were unrelated (or not closely related) to fluctuating bacterial numbers. Exoproteolytic activity correlated well with thymidine incorporation and algal density, confirming indications in the literature that the exoenzyme activity is related to the overall metabolic rate of the bacterial populations.
4. The exoproteolytic activities in the Rhine are similar to the highest observed in eutrophic freshwaters, indicating a rapid turnover of proteins in the river. Bacterial phosphatase activities, measured with MUFP, were similar to those in the few marine and inland waters studied so far. However, phosphate-limited algal blooms, such as reported for the plume of the Rhine in the North Sea, are likely to contribute substantially to hydrolysis of natural organic phosphates.  相似文献

1. The Ponto‐Caspian invader, Hemimysis anomala, was recently found in large numbers in a gravel‐pit lake connected to the Lower Rhine. Mysids were sampled with Perspex traps between September 2002 and April 2003 to study the population dynamics, vertical migration and feeding. 2. The abundance (as catch per unit effort, CPUE) of H. anomala declined from 270 individuals (ind.) trap?1 (4 h)?1 in December to below 4 ind. trap?1 (4 h)?1 in April. Average lengths ranged from 4.9 mm in autumn to 9.9 mm in March. The length–weight relationship of virgin females changed throughout the sampling period, from a size‐corrected wet weight of 5.1 mg in September to 16.6 mg in April for a female of 7.8 mm. 3. Successive monthly samples taken over 24 h revealed that H. anomala preferred the surface at twilight and night. During dawn the mysids migrated to the middle and bottom layers and were hardly found during day. Diel vertical migration clearly depends on the proximate factor light. 4. Stomach analyses revealed that larger H. anomala preferred zooplankton, whereas small individuals fed more on phytoplankton. The seasonal comparison showed an increasing percentage of zooplankton with increasing length. The proportion of zooplankton in the stomachs of large H. anomala individuals was highest during night and lowest during day. 5. The results suggest that H. anomala may become an important link between primary/secondary production and higher trophic levels in the food web of its new environments at the Lower Rhine.  相似文献

Summary In three model reservoirs (LUND, 1975) a method reducing bluegreen algal blooms in lakes was studied. Iron or aluminium were added to inlet waters for chemically binding the inflowing phosphorus. The research program, started in 1975, includes intensive monitoring of many chemical and hydrobiological variables, the determination of water and mass balances and since 1977 measurements or primary production rates with14C. In this paper only the results found in 1977 are discussed. An attempt is made to describe quantitatively how growth rates and changes in biomass are interconnected and how phosphorus precipitation changes these variables. In all reservoirs a large discrepancy was observed between the actual rate of increase in the algal population and the relative production rate. The latter appeared to be higher by one order of magnitude. The relative death rate due to grazing can account for the large difference between these growth rates only when selective grazing of zooplankton on phytoplankton is assumed. It can be concluded that treatment of inlet water with AVR, an aluminium salt, is unsuccessful in reducing algal development. Treatment with ironsulphate may be successful, but a reduction of the relative growth rates was not observed. The effects of grazing of zooplankton andDreissena polymorpha need further investigation.  相似文献

To assess the effects of fluctuating prey availability on predator population dynamics and grazing impact on phytoplankton, we measured growth and grazing rates of three heterotrophic dinoflagellate species—Oxyrrhis marina, Gyrodinium dominans and Gyrodinium spirale—before and after depriving them of phytoplankton prey. All three dinoflagellate species survived long periods (> 10 d) without algal prey, coincident with decreases in predator abundance and cell size. After 1–3 wks, starvation led to a 17–57% decrease in predator cell volume and some cells became deformed and transparent. When re‐exposed to phytoplankton prey, heterotrophs ingested prey within minutes and increased cell volumes by 4–17%. At an equivalent prey concentration, continuously fed predators had ~2‐fold higher specific growth rates (0.18 to 0.55 d?1) than after starvation (?0.16 to 0.25 d?1). Maximum specific predator growth rates would be achievable only after a time lag of at least 3 d. A delay in predator growth poststarvation delays predator‐induced phytoplankton mortality when prey re‐emerges at the onset of a bloom event or in patchy prey distributions. These altered predator‐prey population dynamics have implications for the formation of phytoplankton blooms, trophic transfer rates, and potential export of carbon.  相似文献

1. Grazer and nutrient controls of phytoplankton biomass were tested on two reservoirs of different productivity to assess the potential for zooplankton grazing to affect chlorophyll/phosphorus regression models under Australian conditions. Experiments with zooplankton and nutrients manipulated in enclosures, laboratory feeding trials, and the analysis of in-lake plankton time series were performed. 2. Enclosures with water from the more productive Lake Hume (chlorophyll a = 3–17.5 μg l–1), revealed significant zooplankton effects on chlorophyll a in 3/6, phosphorus limitation in 4/6 and nitrogen limitation in 1/6 of experiments conducted throughout the year. Enclosures with water from the less productive Lake Dartmouth (chlorophyll a = 0.8–3.5 μg l–1), revealed significant zooplankton effects in 5/6, phosphorus limitation in 5/6 and nitrogen limitation in 2/6 of experiments. 3. While Lake Hume enclosure manipulations of the biomass of cladocerans (Daphnia and Diaphanosoma) and large copepods (Boeckella) had negative effects, small copepods (Mesocyclops and Calamoecia) could have positive effects on chlorophyll a. 4. In Lake Hume, total phytoplankton biovolume was negatively correlated with cladoceran biomass, positively with copepod biomass and was uncorrelated with total crustacean biomass. In Lake Dartmouth, total phytoplankton biovolume was negatively correlated with cladoceran biomass, copepod biomass and total crustacean biomass. 5. In both reservoirs, temporal variation in the biomass of Daphnia carinata alone could explain more than 50% of the observed variance in total phytoplankton biovolume. 6. During a period of low phytoplankton biovolume in Lake Hume in spring–summer 1993–94, a conservative estimate of cladoceran community grazing reached a maximum of 0.80 day–1, suggesting that Cladocera made an important contribution to the development of the observed clear-water phase. 7. Enclosure experiments predicted significant grazing when the Cladocera/Phytoplankton biomass ratio was greater than 0.1; this threshold was consistently exceeded during clear water phase in Lake Hume. 8. Crustacean length had a significant effect on individual grazing rates in bottle experiments, with large Daphnia having highest rates. In both reservoirs, mean crustacean length was negatively correlated with phytoplankton biovolume. The observed upper limit of its variation was nearly twice as high compared to other world lakes.  相似文献

The ubiquitous, biogenic trace gas dimethylsulfide (DMS) represents the largest natural source of atmospheric sulfur. Given DMS involvement in cloud formation and climate, understanding and parameterizing the oceanic DMS source and cycling processes is a necessary challenge. We report DMS cycling rates from microzooplankton dilution grazing experiments conducted monthly during 1 year in coastal northwestern Mediterranean waters. Concentrations of DMS, its algal precursor dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSPt) and chlorophyll a (Chla) ranged 0.9–11 nmol L?1, 10–71 nmol L?1, and 0.2–1.5 µg L?1, respectively. By comparing the growth and stock production rates of the DMSP-producing algae to those of total phytoplankton, we estimated that 3?±?4% (range 0.4–12%) of the carbon primary production was invested in DMSP biosynthesis. Microzooplankton grazing rates on DMSP-producing phytoplankton (0.46–1.45 day?1) were generally higher than those on the bulk assemblage (0.08–0.99 day?1), except in midsummer months. This could have been due to the smaller size of most DMSP producers. There was no indication of micrograzer selection against DMSP-containing phytoplankton, since they were not grazed at lower rates than the bulk phytoplankton assemblage. A proportion of 6–20% of the grazed DMSP was converted into DMS, and this grazing-derived production accounted for 32–96% of dark gross DMS production by the total community. Bacteria consumed daily?≤?14–100% of the gross DMS production, which resulted in biological DMS turnover times of 1 to?≥?10 days. Throughout the year, grazing-mediated DMS production explained 73% of the variance in the DMS concentration, implying that microzooplankton grazing plays a major role in controlling DMS concentration in surface waters across a broad range of environmental and productivity conditions in the Mediterranean Sea. These findings should help improve the representation of herbivore grazing in prognostic models to predict the distribution and dynamics of the global DMS emission and its feedback response to changing climate.  相似文献

Studies have shown a strong linkage between zooplankton and fisheries' potential in tropical lakes. High zooplankton production provides the basis for fish production, but knowledge of zooplankton production dynamics in African lakes is extremely limited. Crustacean zooplankton production and the biomass of dominant rotifers in Lake Bosumtwi were assessed over a 2‐year period. The crustaceans comprised an endemic and extremely abundant cyclopoid copepod, Mesocyclops bosumtwii and the cladoceran Moina micrura. Mean standing stock of the crustaceans was 429 mg dw m?3, whilst annual production averaged 2.1 g dw m?3 y?1. Production doubled from 1.4 g dw m?3 y?1 in 2005 to 2.8 g dw m?3 y?1 in 2006. Copepods accounted for 98.5% of crustacean production. The biomass of the dominant rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus and Hexarthra intermedia was less than 1% of total zooplankton biomass. Daily turnover rate and turnover time of the crustaceans was 0.19 day?1 and 6.2 days respectively. Crustacean production yielded no statistical relationship with phytoplankton biomass. Production was well within the range of tropical lakes. Peak crustacean production synchronized maximum rainfall, lake mixing and phytoplankton production. Most importantly, no one year's set of dynamics can be used to characterize zooplankton production in the lake.  相似文献

Forty-eight-hour experimental manipulations of zooplankton biomass were performed to examine the potential effects of zooplankton on nutrient availability and phytoplankton biomass (as measured by seston concentration) and C : N : P stoichiometry in eutrophic nearshore waters of Lake Biwa, Japan. Increasing zooplankton, both mixed-species communities and Daphnia alone, consistently reduced seston concentration, indicating that nearshore phytoplankton were generally edible. The zooplankton clearance rates of inshore phytoplankton were similar to rates measured previously for offshore phytoplankton. Increased zooplankton biomass led to increased concentrations of nutrients (NH4-N, soluble reactive phosphorus [SRP]). Net release rates were higher than those found in previous measurements made offshore, reflecting the nutrient-rich nature of inshore seston. Zooplankton nutrient recycling consistently decreased TIN : SRP ratios (TIN = NH4 + NO3 + NO2). This effect probably resulted from the low N : P ratios of nearshore seston, which were lower than those commonly found in crustacean zooplankton and thus resulted in low retention efficiency of P (relative to N) by the zooplankton. Thus, zooplankton grazing inshore may ameliorate algal blooms due to direct consumption but tends to create nutrient supply conditions with low N : P, potentially favoring cyanobacteria. In comparison with previous findings for offshore, it appears that potential zooplankton effects on phytoplankton and nutrient dynamics differ qualitatively in inshore and offshore regions of Lake Biwa. 1. Monitoring at fortnightly to monthly intervals of a very shallow, lowland lake over 24 years has enabled the time course of recovery from nutrient enrichment to be investigated after high external P loading of the lake (>10 g P m?2 year?1) was reduced between 1977 and 1980. 2. The lake showed a relatively rapid response during the spring and early summer, with a reduction in phytoplankton biomass occurring after 5 years when soluble reactive phosphorus concentration was <10 μg L?1. 3. However, during the later summer the response was delayed for 15 years because of sustained remobilisation of phosphorus from the sediment. The greater water clarity in spring and a gradual shift from planktonic to benthic algal growth may be related to the reduction in internal loading after 15 years. 4. Changes in the phytoplankton community composition were also observed. Centric diatoms became less dominant in the spring, and the summer cyanobacteria populations originally dominated by non‐heterocystous species (Limnothrix/Planktothrix spp.) almost disappeared. Heterocystous species (Anabaena spp. and Aphanizomenon flosaquae) were slower to decline, but after 20 years the phytoplankton community was no longer dominated by cyanobacteria. 5. There were no substantial changes in food web structure following re‐oligotrophication. Total zooplankton biomass decreased but body size of Daphnia hyalina, the largest zooplankton species in the lake, remained unchanged, suggesting that the fish population remained dominated by planktivorous species. 6. Macrophyte growth was still largely absent after 20 years, although during the spring water clarity may have become sufficient for macrophytes to re‐establish.  相似文献

Biomanipulation, through the reduction of fish abundance resulting in an increase of large filter feeders and a stronger top-down control on algae, is commonly used as a lake restoration tool in eutrophic lakes. However, cyanobacteria, often found in eutrophic ponds, can influence the grazing capacity of filter feeding zooplankton. We performed grazing experiments in hypertrophic Lake Blankaart during two consecutive summers (1998, with and 1999, without cyanobacteria) to elucidate the influence of cyanobacteria on the grazing pressure of zooplankton communities. We compared the grazing pressure of the natural macrozooplankton community (mainly small to medium-sized cladocerans and copepods) with that of large Daphnia magna on the natural bacterioplankton and phytoplankton prey communities. Our results showed that in the absence of cyanobacteria, Daphnia magna grazing pressure on bacteria was higher compared to the grazing pressure of the natural zooplankton community. However, Daphnia grazing rates on phytoplankton were not significantly different compared to the grazing rates of the natural zooplankton community. When cyanobacteria were abundant, grazing pressure of Daphnia magnaseemed to be inhibited, and the grazing pressure on bacteria and phytoplankton was similar to that of the natural macrozooplankton community. Our results suggest that biomanipulation may not always result in a more effective top-down control of the algal biomass.  相似文献
