Identification of Cladophora species is challenging due to conservation of gross morphology, few discrete autapomorphies, and environmental influences on morphology. Twelve species of marine Cladophora were reported from North Carolina waters. Cladophora specimens were collected from inshore and offshore marine waters for DNA sequence and morphological analyses. The nuclear‐encoded rRNA internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS) were sequenced for 105 specimens and used in molecular assisted identification. The ITS1 and ITS2 region was highly variable, and sequences were sorted into ITS Sets of Alignable Sequences (SASs). Sequencing of short hyper‐variable ITS1 sections from Cladophora type specimens was used to positively identify species represented by SASs when the types were made available. Secondary structures for the ITS1 locus were also predicted for each specimen and compared to predicted structures from Cladophora sequences available in GenBank. Nine ITS SASs were identified and representative specimens chosen for phylogenetic analyses of 18S and 28S rRNA gene sequences to reveal relationships with other Cladophora species. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that marine Cladophorales were polyphyletic and separated into two clades, the Cladophora clade and the “Siphonocladales” clade. Morphological analyses were performed to assess the consistency of character states within species, and complement the DNA sequence analyses. These analyses revealed intra‐ and interspecific character state variation, and that combined molecular and morphological analyses were required for the identification of species. One new report, Cladophora dotyana, and one new species Cladophora subtilissima sp. nov., were revealed, and increased the biodiversity of North Carolina marine Cladophora to 14 species.  相似文献

Although Cladophora species frequently appear in brackish environments, their genetic diversity, phenological patterns and physiological properties have not been well investigated in these environments. Cladophora is distributed throughout Mikata‐goko, an area consisting of five coastal lakes that are directly or indirectly connected to the sea, resulting in a salinity gradient ranging from fully marine to freshwater. To elucidate genetic and ecological variation in Cladophora, we monthly compared ribosomal internal transcribed spacer sequences of Cladophora specimens across six study sites characterized by different salinity regimes for a year. A total of 12 ribotypes were detected and assigned to six species, four of which were restricted to the marine habitat. Ribotype I of C. vagabunda (L.) Hoek was distributed in high‐salinity brackish waters (mean salinity ≤13 psu; maximum salinity ≤31 psu), whereas C. vagabunda ribotype II and C. glomerata were abundant in low‐salinity brackish waters (mean salinity ≤5 psu; maximum salinity ≤10 psu). Although Cladophora albida (Nees) Kütz. and C. glomerata (L.) Kütz. were collected during all four seasons, C. laetevirens (Dillwyn) Kütz., C. oligocladoidea Hoek and Chihara, C. opaca Sakai and C. vagabunda displayed marked seasonal variation. Culture experiments revealed that optimal salinity conditions for vegetative growth vary among ribotypes collected from different salinity regimes, suggesting that Cladophora distributions are controlled by ribotype‐specific ecophysiological adaptations. In contrast, temperature optima and tolerance were similar among ribotypes showing different seasonalities, and thus their phenologies may be controlled by other environmental factors or biotic conditions, such as reproductive maturity and spore germination.  相似文献

Green algal blooms by Cladophora species are primarily reported in freshwater and coastal regions and cause severe ecological problems. A taxonomic report of the geographic distribution of Cladophora blooms is essential to explore the cause and impact of macroalgal blooms and for eco-physiological studies. The identification of blooming species is necessary for monitoring and controlling algal blooms. Genetic information of DNA sequences is useful for identifying species in the genus Cladophora. In the coastal area of Sangrok, Korea, a large-scale Cladophora bloom was reported for the first time in September 2015. In the present study, we identified the taxonomic entity of Cladophora oligocladoidea (Ulvophyceae, Cladophorales) in Korea. We report for the first time a green algal bloom by this species globally. This is the second report about genetic diversity of C. oligocladoidea since the species was established in Japan. Four ribotypes in the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the nuclear ribosomal DNA represent the genetic diversity of Korean C. oligocladoidea. The results from this taxonomic report and our analysis of the green algal bloom of Korean C. oligocladoidea can provide valuable data to understand the geographic distribution and the genetic diversity of the species.  相似文献

脆弱刚毛藻(Cladophora fracta)是一种大型丝状绿藻,生境分布广泛。然而,对于岩溶泉域分布的刚毛藻研究较少,它们的遗传多样性、生物地理亲缘性和生理特性都有待于深入研究。该研究对我国北方地区五个典型岩溶泉域的50个脆弱刚毛藻样本进行了形态学和分子系统学描述。主要研究目标:(1)对我国北方地区五个典型岩溶泉的刚毛藻生境进行描述;(2)根据形态学特征和分子序列对藻体进行鉴定;(3)探究生境对藻体生理特性的影响。结果表明:基于SSU和LSU序列的结果,发现所分析的50株刚毛藻个体为同一种,同时还发现了13个不同的核糖体基因型。基于SSU和LSU的系统发育树,刚毛藻属均未能形成单系分支,分布在三个不同的分支上。13个样本基因型在SSU和LSU树中的位置相似,与Cladophora vagabunda有很高的序列同源性,但是形态特征却差异很大。从显微结构结果来看,五个岩溶泉域采集到的刚毛藻在细胞直径上无显著差异,藻体的形态特征与脆弱刚毛藻相一致。但是,岩溶泉域采集的藻体细胞直径比文献报道中在湖泊和河流中采集的脆弱刚毛藻直径要大。另外,仅在两个地点(XA和ST)采集的标本中发现有假根状分枝。因此,基于形态学和分子序列的结果,将这五个泉域的刚毛藻鉴定为脆弱刚毛藻(Cladophora fracta)。  相似文献

Cladophora is found in a variety of marine and fresh-waters and provides habitat and food for numerous organisms. It may be the most ubiquitous macroalga in fresh-waters worldwide. This filamentous green alga can reach nuisance levels as a result of cultural eutrophication. Taxonomic identification of Cladophora species is difficult. Taxonomy may be clarified by the simultaneous culture of known taxa and material derived from field collections under the same sets of culture conditions. This should eliminate ecotypic variations in morphology. Cladophora is predominantly benthic and is often found in regions of unidirectional flow or periodic wave action. Its metabolism, and morphology are related to hydrodynamic conditions. Nitrogen and phosphorus are the most commonly reported limiting nutrients. Cladophora is a mid- to late successional species in freshwaters where it is grazer resistant. In marine communities, however, it is considered an early opportunist and relatively palatable to invertebrates. Cladophora is colonized by a wide variety of epiphytes and motile animals because it can offer protection from predation, food (in the form of epiphytes or Cladophora itself), or a substrate that is anchored against flow disturbance. Species interactions that occur within Cladophora communities include 1) competition with other primary producers, 2) top-down control of biomass, 3) association with nitrogen-fixing epiphytes, 4) grazing on epiphytes by invertebrates, and 5) complicated foodwebs in marine intertidal and freshwater communities. Because Cladophora is found in many different habitats, its ecology varies significantly with locale.  相似文献

GAMs (Generalized Additive Models) present a growth pattern for the common filamentous algae (FA) taxa in freshwater ecosystems in Poland. Tribonema, Ulothrix taxa are an early spring species. In comparison with Rhzioclonium, Cladophora and Oedogonium taxa, the algae Zygnemataceae (e.g. Zygnema, Spirogyra) occurs in waters with lower levels of nutrients, total dissolved substances and electrical conductivity. Cladophora glomerata shows different responses to environmental gradients than C. rivularis, C. fracta. Furthermore, the algae Cladophora glomerata (Chlorophyta, Ulvophyceae) forms a thick monoalgae mat (from the surface to the bottom) in the shallow and eutrophic Lake Oporzynskie in Wielkopolska Region in Poland (Central Europe). Detailed algal mat characteristics, physical and chemical parameters of water, and pigments in thalli were measured vertically (surface, middle, bottom) and spatially (marginal and central part) in the stationary mat phase during maximal algal growth. Temperature, dissolved oxygen and PAR irradiation significantly declined as the depth of the mat increased. Water turbidity was greater in the surface layer than in deeper parts, in contrast to the concentrations of N-NO3, N-NH4 and TDS. Pigment content in the cells of C. glomerata, cell lengths and diameters of pyrenoids changed throughout the mat, from top to bottom. The obtained data were used for statistical analyses. In conclusion: dense mats of C. glomerata show a vertical stratification while the mats remain spatially homogenous. Our data suggest that mat structure be considered a biological indicator of freshwater eutrophication.  相似文献

The freshwater sculpins, genus Cottus (Teleostei; Cottidae), comprise bottom-dwelling fishes that exhibit various life-history styles, having radiated throughout Northern Hemisphere freshwater habitats. The phylogenetic relationships among Cottus and related taxa were estimated from mitochondrial DNA 12S rRNA and control region (CR) sequences, the freshwater sculpins examined falling into five lineages (A-E). Lineage A consisted of Trachidermus fasciatus and C. kazika, both having a catadromous life-history. The remaining species (lineages B-E) spawn in freshwater habitats regardless of life-history (amphidromous, lacustrine or fluvial), suggesting that the various life-history types post-dated a common ancestor of lineages B-E. Molecular clock estimates suggested a Pliocene-Pleistocene radiation (or Miocene-Pliocene from the alternative clock) of lineages B-E. In eastern Eurasia, speciation with life-history changes to amphidromous or fluvial styles has apparently occurred independently in some lineages, as a general pattern. Mitochondrial DNA CR phylogeny showed the monophyletic Baikalian cottoids (Cottoidei) to be nested within Cottus and Trachidermus, suggesting that the former ecologically and morphologically divergent cottoids may have originated from a single lineage which invaded the ancient lake.  相似文献

Background  

Nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) genes and transcribed spacers are highly utilized as taxonomic markers in metazoans despite the lack of a cohesive understanding of their evolution. Here we follow the evolution of the rDNA second internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) and the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase I subunit in the malaria mosquito Anopheles longirostris from Papua New Guinea (PNG). This morphospecies inhabits a variety of ecological environments indicating that it may comprise a complex of morphologically indistinguishable species. Using collections from over 70 sites in PNG, the mtDNA was assessed via direct DNA sequencing while the ITS2 was assessed at three levels - crude sequence variation through restriction digest, intragenomic copy variant organisation (homogenisation) through heteroduplex analysis and DNA sequencing via cloning.  相似文献

Changes in growth forms frequently accompany plant adaptive radiations, including páramo–a high‐elevation treeless habitat type of the northern Andes. We tested whether diverse group of Senecio inhabiting montane forests and páramo represented such growth form changes. We also investigated the role of Andean geography and environment in structuring genetic variation of this group. We sampled 108 populations and 28 species of Senecio (focusing on species from former genera Lasiocephalus and Culcitium) and analyzed their genetic relationships and patterns of intraspecific variation using DNA fingerprinting (AFLPs) and nuclear DNA sequences (ITS). We partitioned genetic variation into environmental and geographical components. ITS‐based phylogeny supported monophyly of a LasiocephalusCulcitium clade. A grade of herbaceous alpine Senecio species subtended the LasiocephalusCulcitium clade suggesting a change from the herbaceous to the woody growth form. Both ITS sequences and the AFLPs separated a group composed of the majority of páramo subshrubs from other group(s) comprising both forest and páramo species of various growth forms. These morphologically variable group(s) further split into clades encompassing both the páramo subshrubs and forest lianas, indicating independent switches among the growth forms and habitats. The finest AFLP genetic structure corresponded to morphologically delimited species except in two independent cases in which patterns of genetic variation instead reflected geography. Several morphologically variable species were genetically admixed, which suggests possible hybrid origins. Latitude and longitude accounted for 5%–8% of genetic variation in each of three AFLP groups, while the proportion of variation attributed to environment varied between 8% and 31% among them. A change from the herbaceous to the woody growth form is suggested for species of high‐elevation Andean Senecio. Independent switches between habitats and growth forms likely occurred within the group. Hybridization likely played an important role in species diversification.  相似文献

The Aegagropila clade represents a unique group of cladophoralean green algae occurring mainly in brackish and freshwater environments. The clade is sister to the species‐rich and primarily marine Cladophora and Siphonocladus lineages. Phylogenetic analyses of partial LSU and SSU nrDNA sequences reveal four main lineages within the Aegagropila clade, and allow a taxonomic reassessment. One lineage consists of two marine ‘Cladophora’ species, for which the new genus Pseudocladophora and the new family Pseudocladophoraceae are proposed. For the other lineages, the family name Pithophoraceae is reinstated. Within the Pithophoraceae, the earliest diverging lineage includes Wittrockiella and Cladophorella calcicola, occurring mainly in brackish and subaerial habitats. The two other lineages are restricted to freshwater. One of them shows a strong tendency for epizoism, and consists of Basicladia species and Arnoldiella conchophila. The other lineage includes Aegagropila, Pithophora and a small number of tropical ‘Cladophora’ species. The latter are transferred to the new genus Aegagropilopsis. Previously, polypyramidal pyrenoids had been suggested to be apomorphous for this clade, but we report the finding of both polypyramidal and bilenticular pyrenoids in members of the Pithophoraceae, and thus show that this character has no diagnostic value.  相似文献

The invasive cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii is increasingly spreading in temperate freshwater habitats worldwide and is of major concern due to its ability to produce potent toxins. It is, therefore, important to understand the mechanisms behind the dispersal of this species. Different hypotheses have been proposed to explain the phylogeography and mechanisms underlying the recent expansion of C. raciborskii into temperate latitudes, but there is still no conclusive evidence whether the obvious ecological success of C. raciborskii is due to selection mechanisms, physiological tolerance, climatic change or radiation after the last ice age. In the present study, new isolates of C. raciborskii from Europe and Africa were genetically characterised by sequencing the ITS1, PC-IGS, nifH and rpoC1 genes and compared to corresponding sequences of C. raciborskii available in GenBank in order to test different phylogeographical hypotheses. The strains were also morphologically examined and screened for production of the hepatotoxic cylindrospermopsin (CYN). We clearly demonstrate a variation among the populations of C. raciborskii from different geographical regions. The phylogenetic analyses revealed a clustering of the strains due to geographic origin. The ITS1 and nifH genes separated into American, European and Australian–African groups, whereas the PC-IGS and rpoC1 separated into American and European/Australian/African groups. An analysis of concatenated data supported the division into American, European and African/Australian groups, and even indicated a subdivision into an African and an Australian group. Our findings do not strongly support any of the existing hypotheses on the phylogeography of C. raciborskii, and most likely a combination of these hypotheses is the best approach to understand the evolution and dispersal of this species.  相似文献

Cordyceps is one of the target genera for modern mycological studies. Among themCordyceps sinensis is the most famous but poorly defined species because the fungus is endemic in districted regions of east Eurasia. We have explored the various growing regions and habitats where the fungus grows in the wild. We also examined authentic cultures for the species. We analyzed the sequences of ITS1, 2 and 5.8 S rDNA regions ofC. sinensis materials collected from 11 localities of southwestern China. Phylogenetic analyses were performed with these sequences and with additional sequences obtained from GenBank. All sequences formed a single cluster, which comprised two subgroups. Our results strongly suggested that intraspecific variation was rather small and that some species that are morphologically similar toC. sinensis but with different names might be synonymous withC. sinensis. The difference in the pharmaceutical activity among these collectedC. sinensis from different regions will be studied in the future.  相似文献

Some species of the freshwater bryozoans (Bryozoa, Phylactolaemata) belonging to the genus Plumatella are remarkably difficult to identify because of the large similarity of superficial architecture of their statoblasts. The examination of statoblasts by scanning electron microscope (SEM) has in fact resolved only some taxonomic questions. In this article, the authors report on novel morphological and molecular traits to discriminate among ten species of Plumatellidae (P. viganoi, P. repens, P. geimermassardi, P. rugosa, P. reticulata, P. casmiana, P. fungosa, P. emarginata, P. vaihiriae, and Hyalinella punctata). The former traits are based on shape, number, and position of annular chamber pores, whereas the latter reside on amplification and sequence analysis of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region of nuclear rDNA. The successful amplification of ITS region from statoblasts and zooidial tubules allowed us to sequence this region on all the species investigated. The ITS sequences showed the presence of sufficient and informative polymorphisms to discriminate among morphologically similar species. It is noteworthy that the resulting ITS phylogenetic tree largely corroborated the distinction of at least two groups of freshwater bryozoans inferred on the basis of the annular chamber pore morphology. This study provides innovative approaches to reliably characterize freshwater bryozoans species and gain more insight into their taxonomy, phylogenetic relationship, and biodiversity.  相似文献

Paxillus involutus is a model species for ecological or physiological studies of ectomycorrhizal agaricomycetes. Three to six groups or species linked to it have been ecologically and morphologically distinguished. Phylogenetic studies have revealed the existence of four species in Europe: Paxillus ammoniavirescens, Paxillus obscurisporus, P. involutus, and a fourth as yet not described species. We studied 47 collections from 24 French and Italian locations, supplemented with GenBank data, in order to genetically and taxonomically delineate these species. Phylogenetic analyses of three nuclear DNA regions (rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS), tef1-α, and gpd) confirmed the four European species. Morphology, culture, and ecology features allowed us to delineate species boundaries and to describe the fourth species we named Paxillus cuprinus since it turns coppery with age. As there is no existing original herbarium specimen for P. involutus, one of our collections was chosen as the epitype. The low genetic diversity found in P. cuprinus correlates with stable morphological traits (basidiome colour, ovoid–amygdaliform spores with an apical constriction) and with ecological preferences (association with Betulaceae in open and temperate areas). In contrast, P. ammoniavirescens is characterized by a high genetic diversity and a high variation of its morphological and ecological features.  相似文献

Pelagophycus porra (Leman) Setchell has a narrow distribution confined to deep water from the Channel Islands off the southern California coast to central Baja California, Mexico. Distinct morphotypes are consistently correlated with distinctive habitats, that is, windward exposures characterized by strong water motion and rocky substrates, and sheltered areas with soft substrates found on the lee sides of the islands. We tested the hypothesis that morphologically and ecologically distinct forms reflect genetically distinct stands. Individuals representing populations from three islands and the mainland were compared using RFLP analyses of the nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2), chloroplast trn L (UAA) intron sequences, and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPDs). No variation was found in a survey of 20 restriction sites of ITS1 (ca. 320 base pair [bp]) and ITS2 (ca. 360 bp) among individuals from six populations. Likewise, comparisons of trn L intron (241 bp) sequences among nine individuals from seven populations were identical with the exception of a CATAGT insert in two adjacent stands. A RAPD analysis of 24 individuals from nine populations (4 windward and 5 leeward) using 16 primers generated 166 bands. Thirty-eight percent of the bands did not vary, 16% were unique to a given individual, and 46% were variable. Neighbor joining analysis produced a well-resolved tree with moderately high bootstrap support in which windward and leeward populations were easily distinguished. The lack of divergence in both the fast evolving nuclear rDNA-ITS and the chloroplast trn L intron does not support the morphotypes as different species. However, the compartmentalized differentiation shown in the RAPD data clearly points to isolation. This, and previous ecological studies that demonstrate habitat specificity suggest that leeward stands probably comprise a species in statu nascendi.  相似文献

The putative harmful algal bloom dinoflagellate, Pfiesteria piscicida (Steidinger et Burkholder), frequently co‐occurs with other morphologically similar species collectively known as Pfiesteria‐like organisms (PLOs). This study specifically evaluated whether unique sequences in the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions, ITS1 and ITS2, could be used to develop PCR assays capable of detecting PLOs in natural assemblages. ITS regions were selected because they are more variable than the flanking small subunit or large subunit rRNA genes and more likely to contain species‐specific sequences. Sequencing of the ITS regions revealed unique oligonucleotide primer binding sites for Pfiesteria piscicida, Pfiesteria shumwayae (Glasgow et Burkholder), Florida “Lucy” species, two cryptoperidiniopsoid species, “H/V14” and “PLO21,” and the estuarine mixotroph, Karlodinium micrum (Leadbetter et Dodge). These PCR assays had a minimum sensitivity of 100 cells in a 100‐mL sample (1 cell·mL?1) and were successfully used to detect PLOs in the St. Johns River system in Florida, USA. DNA purification and aspects of PCR assay development, PCR optimization, PCR assay controls, and collection of field samples are discussed.  相似文献

Diplostomoid metacercariae parasitize freshwater fishes worldwide and cannot be identified to species based on morphology. In this study, sequences of the barcode region of cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) were used to discriminate species in 1088 diplostomoids, most of which were metacercariae from fish collected in the St. Lawrence River, Canada. Forty‐seven diplostomoid species were detected, representing a large increase in known diversity. Most species suggested by CO1 sequences were supported by sequences of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of rDNA and host and tissue specificity. Three lines of evidence indicate that physiological incompatibility between host and parasite is a more important determinant of host specificity than ecological separation of hosts and parasites in this important group of freshwater fish pathogens. First, nearly all diplostomoid species residing outside the lens of the eyes of fish are highly host specific, while all species that occur inside the lens are generalists. This can be plausibly explained by a physiological mechanism, namely the lack of an effective immune response in the lens. Second, the distribution of diplostomoid species among fish taxa reflected the phylogenetic relationships of host species rather than their ecological similarities. Third, the same patterns of host specificity were observed in separate, ecologically distinctive fish communities.  相似文献

The new species Nonea dumanii, endemic to the mountains of the western Taurus in south Turkey (C4 Antalya), is described an illustrated based on original collections by the authors. Karyological observations and analysis of ITS1 DNA sequences showed that the species is probably hexaploid with 2n = 6x = 60 and has phylogenetic affinity to the diploid N. monticola from the Paphlagonian mountains as well as to the tetraploid N. anchusoides from northwest Iran and southeast Turkey. From these allopatric species it is morphologically distinct in characters of the indumentum, flower and fruit. Polyploidy is supported as a major driving force for speciation in Nonea, especially in the group of Anatolian mountain species with primary base number x = 10.  相似文献

In this study, the competing hypotheses of single vs. double colonisation events for freshwater Pachyurinae (Sciaenidae) in South America is tested and the historical biogeography of the expansion of this clade within the continent is reconstructed based on phylogenetic analysis. Parsimony and Bayesian inference (BI) for 19 marine and freshwater species assigned to Sciaenidae, Haemulidae and Polypteridae were determined based on partial sequences of the mitochondrial 16S and cytochrome b genes and fragments of the nuclear Tmo‐4C4 and rhodopsin genes. A parsimonious ancestral character reconstruction of euryhalinity was performed on a clade of families of closely related fishes to evaluate the role of ecological fitting in the colonisation of freshwater by a marine sciaenid. The parsimony and BI phylogenetic hypotheses for the concatenated sequences supported the monophyly of the freshwater Sciaenidae. Divergence of the two freshwater clades of Sciaenidae, Pachyurinae and Plagioscion, occurred within the Amazon Basin. Within Pachyurinae, two clades were recovered: one composed of species from the Amazon and the Paraná Basin and a second with representatives from the São Francisco and south‐eastern Atlantic basins. The results were compatible with the hypothesis of a single colonisation event of South American freshwater habitats by a marine lineage. The hypothesis of gradual adaptation to freshwater was rejected in favour of the hypothesis of ecological fitting. Sciaenidae, or a subordinate lineage within the family, is ancestrally capable of withstanding exposure to low‐salinity habitats, which putatively facilitated the colonisation of freshwater habitats. The subsequent diversification and expansion of Pachyurinae across South America followed this colonisation and replicated the general pattern of the area relationships of South American river basins for several other fish groups.  相似文献

The following biomasses per dm2 rock surface have been estimated:Cladophora (dry weight): 0.78 g, diatoms (dry weight): 1.15 g, animals (number of individuals): 12 544.6. The fauna of theCladophora-belt has been subdivided according to feeding types.7. Some herbivores have been studied in laboratory experiments. The epiphytic diatoms are important for survival of the first postmarsupial stages of the isopodIdotea baltica as well as for maximum growth rates of the gastropodHydrobia ulvae and chironomid larvae.8. The daily consumption ofCladophora-filaments has been determined for juveniles of the isopodIdotea baltica and the amphipodGammarus oceanicus by microscope examinations of faecal pellets.9. The diatom diet of the rotiferProales reinhardti has been listed according to genera or species. Among the animals living in theCladophora-belt,P. reinhardti attains the highest numbers of individuals.10. Examples of food-chains within theCladophora community are presented.
Die Nahrungskette der Fauna derCladophora-Zone
Kurzfassung In der Ostsee bildet die GrünalgeCladophora glomerata große, gürtelförmige bestände in Ufernähe. Diese Bestände und ihre Fauna sind für die ökologischen Verhältnisse in der Ostsee von großer Bedeutung. Es wurde daher das Artengefüge dieser Fauna analysiert und Trockengewichtsbestimmungen anC. glomerata durchgeführt. Die Produktivität dieser Alge beträgt 3105 m Algenfilamente pro Quadratdezimeter pro Monat (mittleres Trockengewicht eines 1000 mm langen Algenfilamentes: 0,25 mg). Pro Quadratdezimeter Felsenoberfläche ergeben sich folgende Werte für die Hauptorganismengruppen: Trockengewicht fürCladophora: 0,78 g, für Diatomeen: 1,25 g; Anzahl Tiere: 12 544 Individuen. In Laboratoriumsexperimenten konnte nachgewiesen werden, daß epiphytische Diatomeen derCladophora für die ersten postmarsupialen Stadien des IsopodenIdotea baltica lebensnotwendig und für den GastropodenHydrobia ulvae sowie für Chironomidenlarven zur Erzielung maximaler Wachstumsraten erforderlich sind. Der tägliche Konsum anCladophora-Filamenten wurde für jungeIdotea baltica undGammarus oceanicus an Hand der ausgeschiedenen Faeces ermittelt. Die Nahrungskette innerhalb der Fauna derCladophora-Zone wird an Hand von Beispielen illustriert.
