Question: What is the importance of the seed bank in the maintenance of the restoration potential of a 60‐year‐old abandoned calcareous grassland overgrown by Pinus trees? Location: ‘Les Pairées’, province of Luxembourg, Belgium. Methods: The seed bank and the above‐ground vegetation were surveyed in three adjacent stands, previously forming a unique calcareous grassland: a 60‐year‐old Pinus forest, a four‐year‐old clear‐cutting and a typical calcareous grassland. Floristic diversity was compared among stands and between vegetation and seed bank. Results: The species richness of the vegetation and the seed bank was significantly lower in the Pinus forest. More floristic similarities were found between the clear‐cutting and the calcareous grassland. Seed bank was essentially transient, dominated by annual species. Its correspondence with the above‐ground vegetation was weak. Conclusion: Very few calcareous grassland species have persisted in the Pinus stand. Four years after clear‐cutting, the stand was nearing restoration towards a calcareous grassland. Seed longevity in the soil was not the most explicative factor. Dispersal of propagules from adjacent sources was also important.  相似文献

The study was carried out in two sample plots which were set in two regions where the vegetation was protected for 8 and 3 years.The results of DCA (Detrended Correspondence Analysis) showed that the vegetation on the north or northwest aspects in Yunmeng Mountain (Quercus liaotungensis coppice and Spiraea trilobata scrubs) has no systematic floristic difference from the vegetation which existed in the same area in 1964 with the approximate aspect under human disturbance, no matter whether they were protected for 8 or 3 years. In south and southeast slopes (Vitex negundo var. heterophylla community), the protected shrublands have larger species diversities than that of the shrublands in 1964. In addition, there is no significant difference between the communities which were protected for different periods of time. However, the number of species in protected area is larger than that in unprotected area. Furthermore, the community which is under a longer period of protection developes larger diversity. The north slopes have more species than the south slopes.The protection is helpful for communities to develope their biomass. The biomass of scrubs on the north slope is much greater than that on the south in the site where the vegetation is protected for 8 years, as well as in the site under 3 years protection. In contrast, due to the larger coverage of the scrubs on north slopes, the biomass of herbage on the south slope is much greater than that on the north slope in both sites. When compared with the biomass of the shrublands in unprotected area, the increase of biomass shows the efficiency of protection. The aboveground biomass of scrubs in both site are 2.8 and 2.2 times greater than that in unprotected area. The ratio of the total aboveground biomass of Site 1, Site 2 and the unprotected area is 2.5:2.2:1 on south aspect.  相似文献

 研究了亚高山针叶林不同恢复阶段物种多样性的变化,并用逐步多元回归分析法探讨了17种土壤理化指标对多样性变化的响应。结果表明:人工林物种多样性随着恢复年代的增加呈逐渐增加的趋势,乔、灌、草各层物种组成也发生相应的变化,但多样性的恢复十分缓慢。不同土壤理化性质对物种多样性变化的响应不尽相同,其中土壤容重、土壤含水量等表征土壤水源涵养功能的物理指标,随着物种多样性指数的增加而得到改善;枯枝落叶贮量、有机质含量、水解性酸和Ca、Mg、P含量等土壤营养功能指标也随乔、灌层物种多样性的增加而增加,土壤K2O含量随草本层物种多样性的增加而减少;并建立了上述9项指标与物种多样性的相关数学模型。其余8项指标与多样性指数没有直接的线性关系。保护和提高亚高山人工针叶林群落物种多样性能促进部分土壤养分状况的改善和生态功能的恢复。  相似文献

对宝天曼地区不同恢复阶段栓皮栎林的高等植物物种多样性特征进行了初步分析。结果表明,各层物种丰富度和多样性指数在不同恢复阶段栓皮栎林表现出草本层>灌木层>乔木层的趋势。乔木层物种丰富度和多样性指数基本上随恢复时间的增加而增加;灌木层在未破坏的栓皮栎林内较低,而在其他恢复阶段的栓皮栎林内基本相同;草本层在恢复5年、15年和25年的栓皮栎林中较高,而在恢复45年和未破坏的栓皮栎林内较低。乔木层物种均匀度指数在未破坏的栓皮栎林中较高,在恢复25年的栓皮栎林中较低;灌木层在恢复45年的栓皮栎林中较高,在恢复15年的栓皮栎林较低;草本层在恢复5年的栓皮栎林中较高,在恢复15年的栓皮栎林中较低。不同恢复阶段栓皮栎林各层次间的物种多样性差异大多不显著,只有乔木层和草本层及灌木层和草本层之间的物种丰富度指数有显著差异。不同恢复阶段栓皮栎林在乔木层物种多样性特征上的差异最大,在灌木层物种多样性特征上有一定差异,在草本层物种多样性特征上没有明显的差异。  相似文献

Abstract. After abandonment many limestone grasslands have been overgrown by trees and shrubs; as a result, species-rich communities with many regionally rare and endangered species are vanishing. Some studies suggest that, in cases where grassland is being restored, the species composition and rate of change is strongly dependent on the initial conditions, i.e. the earlier presence of grassland species and the opportunity for colonization of new sites by grassland species. These hypotheses were tested in a five-year restoration experiment after the clearing of a 35-yr-old secondary pine wood developed on abandoned grassland. Tree cutting induced rapid changes in the floristic composition and species cover. The number of grassland species from the class Festuco-Brometea increased significantly in the restored grassland, but their cover was much lower than in the old grassland. Canonical Correspondence Analysis showed significant differences in species composition between the grassland restored in former wood gaps and that developed in former closed wood. In wood gap sites the cover of species from the class Molinio-Arrhenatheretea and tufted perennials was much higher, whereas the cover of Festuco-Brometea species was lower. Significantly more shrubs, woodland species, ruderal and nitrophilous species as well as annual and biennial species occurred in the former closed wood site. It was found that richness and composition of the restored grassland depended strongly on the community composition before tree cutting, as well as on the presence of grassland species in the neighbourhood. Periodical tree cutting enables the maintenance of a temporal-spatial mosaic of scrub-grassland communities in isolated habitats and the preservation of local species diversity.  相似文献

The restoration of degraded wetland ecosystems and the recovery of wetland biodiversity are important global issues. Generally, wetland restoration projects include activities to recover vegetation. A promising revegetation technique is one in which soil seed banks are utilized as the source of plant recolonization. Using such a technique, a pilot project to restore lakeshore vegetation was launched at Lake Kasumigaura, Japan, in 2002. In the project, lake sediments containing the seed banks were spread thinly (∼10 cm) on the surfaces of artificial lakeshores, which were constructed in front of concrete levees and had microtopographic variations. In total, 180 species, including six endangered or vulnerable species and 12 native submerged plants that had disappeared from the above-ground vegetation of the lake, were recorded in five recreated lakeshores (total area, 65,200 m2) during the first year of the restoration. The distribution of each restored species at the sites suggested the importance of microtopographic relief for recolonizing species-rich lakeshore vegetation. Furthermore, the origin of the source seed banks affected the species composition of the restored vegetation. On the other hand, the restoration sites were subject to exotic plant invasions. Here, we report lessons learned from the Lake Kasumigaura restoration project as a contribution to the establishment of ecologically sound revegetation techniques.  相似文献

Parks, as one specific type of urban open space, play important roles in the conservation of urban biodiversity and provision of recreational services for local residents. As there is a lack of specific insight into park plant species composition in relation to park features, 24 sample parks within the inner city of Beijing, the capital of China, were studied by stratified random plot sampling of their tree, shrub, and herbaceous communities, respectively, in order to investigate how human activities have influenced park green cover configuration and floristic characteristics. The quantitative correlation of species richness and the park green cover indices (patch size, shape, etc.) were studied. The importance value index for plant species (trees, shrubs, and herbaceous species) of each park was calculated. The two-way indicator species analysis approach (TWINSPAN) was applied to classify the 24 parks into different groups based on their species assemblages. Two-hundred and eighty-eight species were recorded within the 24 study parks, belonging to 184 genera and 72 families dominated by Gramineae, Compositae, and Leguminosae. Among all the recorded species, 41% are exotic. The species occurrence, abundance and diversity vary significantly among different parks. Besides the positive correlation (R=0.505, P<0.05) between herbaceous species abundance and the park green cover size, no other significant relations were found between the species abundance and other indices of park green cover configuration. Remarkably, the TWINSPAN classification resulted in a good discrimination between park functional types and the variation in their species assemblage. For the parks of similar age (development history) or landscape design, their species assemblages show more similarity. The methodology adopted and results can be employed to improve baseline information on urban plant ecology and support the setting of priorities for future park management and vegetation protection.  相似文献

Within Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, Zostera marina populations have declined by 62% over the last 20 years, and restoration efforts have met with mixed success. We have completed a microsatellite-based genetic investigation of eight populations of Z. marina within Barnegat Bay to determine whether the genetic stock origins of the plants used in management projects may affect restoration success. Additionally, we assessed the genetic diversity of Z. marina in Barnegat Bay to better understand its population structure. Clonal diversity ranged from 0.70 to 0.95 for the populations studied. Individually, Barnegat Bay populations are not genetically diverse, and there is also little divergence among populations. The Atlantic populations had mean Hobs values (0.20–0.34) that were far lower than the Hexp values (0.69–0.83). Also, the F IS values in all of the eastern populations indicate a surfeit of homozygotes over heterozygotes, suggesting a low degree of outcrossing in the Barnegat Bay populations. Six of the ten populations studied (Ham Island, Manahawkin Bay, Shelter Island, Marsh Elder, Harvey Cedar Sedge, and Long Island) show evidence of historical bottlenecks. Mean estimated F ST values would suggest that most alleles are undergoing moderate genetic differentiation, with values that range from 0.06 to 0.13. Oyster Creek and Sedge Island demonstrate the largest estimated effective population sizes and may be the most appropriate populations for use in future eelgrass restoration projects.  相似文献

Within Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, eelgrass (Zostera marina) populations have declined by 62 % over the last 20 years. To better understand the consequences of this devastation, we have previously employed microsatellite DNA polymorphisms to analyze the population structure of Z. marina within Barnegat Bay, as well as along the eastern United States seaboard. We have restored populations of Z. marina in Barnegat Bay over the last 10 years to help assess the best planting conditions and ecotypes that might be used in long-term restoration strategies. In this study, we examined the genetic health of the restored populations compared to that of the donor eelgrass populations within the bay. Using microsatellites, we can identify which parental founding ecotypes survived the restoration process over multiple generations. The frequency of observed heterozygotes, although higher than in the natural populations, still indicates reduced levels of diversity and connectivity. The inbreeding frequency is high in the restored populations, but lower than what is seen in the native populations. All restored populations have effective population values >50, suggesting a high probability of survival in the short term.  相似文献

Community-level studies with finches have traditionally viewed local resources as the primary constrainst on local diversity. Patches have been considered to be self-contained and embedded in landscapes that were neutral with respect to the ecological processes under investigation. This study uses a factorial design to examine the relative roles of patch content and patch context in determining patterns of species richness. Sparrows were surveyed in small fallow patches that varied in both weed cover and the type of adjacent habitat. Species richness and total sparrow abundance were significantly influenced by both factors. Individual species were also influnced by both factors; however, responses were species-specific. Because occupation of particular plot types was conditional on their association with specific habitat types, the spatial patterning of species assemblages results from the configuration of patch types within the landscape.  相似文献

Dry grasslands are among the most threatened plant communities of Central Europe. We explore the time scale of spontaneous regeneration of dry grasslands on abandoned fields in an area of Central Europe, where also ancient grassland communities occur (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany). On three permanent plots with shallow soils we monitored during 10 years change of species composition and analysed whether spontaneous succession leads to assemblages similar to the ancient dry grassland communities in the direct surroundings. We found that dry grassland species are able to invade the permanent plots and during the 10 years of succession the number of dry grassland species increased. But even after 10 years there was a clear difference between ancient dry grassland communities and the assemblages on the permanent plots. Our findings suggest two important conclusions: First, spontaneous succession on abandoned fields is a cheap possibility for the conservation of some dry grassland species, at least on shallow soils. Second, the time scale of the regeneration process, however, is rather long. Hence, conservation of remnants of ancient grassland communities needs special attention.  相似文献

通过对不同林龄(10~70年)的人工云杉(Picea asperata)林及自然恢复的桦木(Betula utilis var. sinensis)林和天然原始冷杉(Abies faxoniana)林的调查研究,采用Margalef指数、Simpson指数、McIntosh指数、Shannon-Wiener指数、Pielou的均匀度指数、Hurlbert均匀度指数等多样性指数及物种数、个体数和盖度分析了群落乔木层、灌木层、草本层及总体的物种多样性,结果发现1)人工云杉林的物种多样性随着林龄的增加逐渐上升,林冠郁闭前后上升最快,在50~70年间下降;其中乔木层物种多样性先上升,郁闭后下降;灌木层物种多样性郁闭前下降,郁闭后骤然上升,后来缓慢下降;草本层物种多样性在早期阶段很高,随着郁闭度的增大而下降,郁闭后又缓慢回升.2)均匀度的变化幅度不大,变化的趋势基本上与物种多样性相反. 3)次生桦木林与同林龄的人工云杉林及天然原始林相比,原始冷杉林的物种丰富度、群落总体、乔木层、草本层优势度(Simpson指数和MacIntosh指数)和多样性(Shannon-Wiener指数)最高,灌木层均匀度最低;人工云杉林的物种丰富度、优势度、群落总体、乔木层、草本层多样性最低,但灌木层的均匀度和多样性最高. 4)物种多样性的变化与群落盖度特别是乔木层盖度呈负相关,影响人工云杉林物种多样性恢复的主要因素是其乔木层的盖度过大. 5)人工云杉林的物种多样性不仅低于同龄的自然恢复的桦木林,远远低于天然原始林,而且经过70年的发育,灌木层和草本层的盖度很低,水土保持和水源涵养的生态效益很差.迫切需要调整人工云杉林的群落结构,以恢复其生物多样性,增强其生态效益的发挥.建议在人工云杉林郁闭以后,采取适当的人工干扰如间伐等,降低乔木层的盖度,以促进林下灌草层的发育,既可增强水土保持功能,又可加速物种多样性的恢复.  相似文献

The impact of hydrological manipulation of an unfertilised, Dutch peat grassland area on plant species composition on ditch banks and in ditchwater was studied. The hydrological manipulation involved raising the groundwater level by admitting nutrient-poor, Ca-rich groundwater in one compartment, and by retaining precipitation in another compartment. A third compartment served as control.The plant species composition showed significant correlations with the following hydrochemical parameters: in bank vegetation with K+ concentration, and winter and summer groundwater levels, water depth and elevation; in aquatic vegetation with pH, the concentrations of Cl- organic-C and NH4 + water temperature and elevation.The number of terrestrial plant species increased after compartmentation from 97 to 122; 16 submerged and floating species were found. Most new terrestrial species probably emerged in response to cessation of fertilization and biomass removal, since they showed no preference for any compartment. Five species showed preference for the groundwater compartment and two for the rainwater compartment. Of the new terrestrial plants, seven were relatively rare: Carex panicea, C. oederi, C. pallescens, C. vesicaria, Galium uliginosum, Juncus acutiflorus and Stellaria uliginosa. Of the aquatic plants, eight were relatively rare: Chara globularis, two Callitriche spp., four potamogetonaceae and Ranunculus circinatus.This study indicates that hydrological manipulation of grassland systems in which fertilisation has ceased has profound effects on the vegetation in the ditches of these systems. Bank vegetation responds more slowly and to other hydrochemical factors than aquatic vegetation. Short-term responses in terms of increase in diversity of vegetation pattern and species richness are promising. Long-term responses are not yet known.  相似文献

In an outdoor mesocosm experiment of 80 weeks, the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus addition was tested on growth of Typha domingensis Presl. rhizomes in a matrix of Schoenoplectus americanus (Pers.) Volkart ex Schinz and Keller, under loading rates of 0.23 gm−2 d−1 of nitrogen, 0.17 gm−2 d−1 of P, both nutrient together and control conditions, to assess the potential expansion of T. domingensis in response to nutrient inputs.  相似文献

We studied evenness and species richness in two assemblages of soil arthropods at six contiguous study plots in Mediterranean ecosystems of central Italy, three of these plots being burnt and three unburnt. We analysed these aspects of community structure by diversity–dominance diagrams comparisons made through analysis of covariance on respective slopes and ordinate intercepts. We observed consistent patterns in both Collembola and Oniscidea assemblages, either in burnt and unburnt plots. Evenness did not change among study plots and across habitats, either before or after fire, whereas species' composition was significantly altered by fire. Results from our study implied that evenness and species diversity are clearly affected in a different and independent way by fire. Hence, it is not acceptable to focus on only the evenness when looking at the effects of controlled fires for environmental management reasons.  相似文献

Thelow nutrient status of semi-natural grasslands, pastures and meadows,reflects a continuity of nutrient reduction by grazing and hay-making. Ithas been hypothesized that the nutrient depletion itself may reduce competitionbetween individuals, and that mycorrhiza smooths out differences in nutrientuptake and competitive ability, so that competition for nutrients is evenfurther reduced. This interaction between site history, nutrient status andmycorrhiza could thus be one explanation for a high species diversity usuallyfound in semi-natural grasslands. To determine variation in colonizationof arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AM), three species(Achillea millefolium L., Ranunculusacris L. and Anthriscus sylvestris L.) weresampled at sites with different management history. All three species hadmycorrhizal colonization. Correlations between species diversity patterns atdifferent spatial scales (0.04,1 and total species number in the site) andmycorrhizal colonization were examined. In addition, soil samples were analysedconcerning P, K, N and pH. When combining measures for the three speciestogether there were significantly higher AM colonization at sites with a longcontinuous management regime, compared to sites with short or interruptedmanagement regime. A significantly positive correlation was also found betweenplant species diversity and colonization of mycorrhiza. Soil nutrient status androot weight density did not differ among the sites with different managementregime. This indicates that increasing nutrient status, or root competition, arenot likely causal mechanisms behind a reduced AM colonization rate at sites withshort or interrupted management regime. The correlation with species diversityis more likely a result of management continuity itself. A long continuousmanagement is associated with an increasing likelihood of successful dispersalof plant species as well as of fungal species.  相似文献
