The seasonal time course of phytoplankton primary productivitywas studied weekly in a hypertrophic, gravel-pit lake closeto Madrid, Spain. Chlorophyll a ranged 22–445 mg m–2.Gross primary productivity attained 0.28±0.14 g C m–2h–1 (range: 0.06–0.60), its yearly value being 900g C m–2, but the shallow euphotic depths and the highplankton respiration ensured that net productivity was generallylow. Respiration losses amounted to 0.31±0.24 g O2 m–2h–1, with phytoplankton respiration roughly attainingone-half of overall plankton respiration. Areal phytoplanktonproductivity and plankton respiration followed a seasonal trendbut this was not the case for photosynthetic capacity. Surfacephotoinhibition was evenly distributed throughout the study.Quantum yields showed an increasing depth trend, but no seasonaltrend. Both Pmax and Ik were both temperature- and irradiance-dependent.As compared with lakes of lesser trophic degree, phytoplanktonprimary production in hypertrophic lakes might be increasednot only by higher nutrient contents but also by low chlorophyll-specificattenuation coefficients and low background, non-algal attenuation, thereby allowing for higher areal chlorophyll contents and hencehigher areal productivity. Our study suggests that physical(irradiance and water column stability) as well as chemicalfeatures (dissolved inorganic carbon and soluble reactive phosphorus)may control seasonality of phytoplankton primary productionin this lake despite recent claims that only physical factorsare of significance in hypertrophic lakes. However, this doesnot explain all the variability observed and so a food web controlis also likely to be operating.  相似文献

Bacterial growth and grazing mortality were estimated from Mayto October in two south Swedish oligotrophic lakes, one beinga clearwater lake (water colour 5–10 mg Pt l–1 DOC2.9–3.4 mg l–1, Secchi disk depth 5.0–9.4m) and the other a humic, brownwater lake (water colour 105–165mg Pt l–1, DOC 13.7–22.7mg l–1, Secchi diskdepth 1.3–2.1 m). Specific rates of growth and grazingmortality were generally similar for both lakes. However, theabundance of bacteria was consistently 2–3 times higherin the water of the humic lake, suggesting that the total productionand consumption of bacterial cells were also higher than inthe dearwater lake. The ratio of bacterial secondary productionto primary production was higher in the humic lake than in theclearwater lake, indicating that the bacterioplankton of thehumic lake utilize allochthonous substrates, in addition tosubstrates originating from autochthonous primary production. Most of the bacterial loss in both lakes could be attributedto small protozoan grazers. This implies that allochthonousand autochthonous organic carbon fixed by bacterioplankton isless important in terms of carbon flow to higher trophic levelsthan would be expected if macrozooplankton were the dominantbacterivores, providing a more direct and efficient transferof carbon to larger organisms.  相似文献

The influence of vertical nutrient transport on epilimnetic phosphorus was studied comparatively in four calcareous Wisconsin lakes during 1972. In the two lakes with steep metalimnetic nutrient gradients (Mendota, Delavan), upward fluxes by entrainment and eddy diffusion exceeded all other influxes combined; here epilimnetic total-P concentrations increased during period of high windpower and thermocline migration, and decreased during comparatively stagnant intervals. In the two lakes lacking upper metalimnetic P gradients (Green, Fish), higher windpower had little or no effect on epilimnetic phosphorus. In each of the four lakes epilimnetic P declined in early summer until a quasi steady-state was achieved between P influxes and P sedimentation. In Mendota and Delavan steady-state featured higher concentrations of total-P, and much higher epilimnetic concentrations of particulate-P and chlorophyll, than in Green and Fish Lakes — mainly on account of the high fluxes of molybdate-reactive, biologically-available P through the seasonal thermocline. The flux analysis illustrates why mean lake TP concentration after ice-out is an inconsistent measure (not sufficient statistic) for estimating nutrient potential and chlorophyll standing crops during the following summer in stratified lakes.  相似文献

Although both nutrient inputs and zooplankton grazing are importantto phytoplankton and bacteria in lakes, controversy surroundsthe relative importance of grazing pressure for these two groupsof organisms. For phytoplankton, the controversy revolves aroundwhether zooplankton grazers, especially large cladocerans likeDaphnia, can effectively reduce phytoplankton populations regardlessof nutrient conditions. For bacteria, little is known aboutthe balance between possible direct and indirect effects ofboth nutrients and zooplankton grazing. However, there is evidencethat bacteria may affect phytoplankton responses to nutrientsor zooplankton grazing through direct or apparent competition. We performed a mesocosm experiment to evaluate the relativeimportance of the effects of nutrients and zooplankton grazingfor phytoplankton and bacteria, and to determine whether bacteriamediate phytoplankton responses to these factors. The factorialdesign crossed two zooplankton treatments (unsieved and sieved)with four nutrient treatments (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 µgphosphorus (P) l–1 day–1 together with nitrogen(N) at a N:P ratio of 20:1 by weight). Weekly sieving with 300µm mesh reduced the average size of crustacean zooplanktonin the mesocosms, decreased the numbers and biomass of Daphnia, and increased the biomass of adult copepods. Nutrient enrichmentcaused significant increases in phytoplankton chlorophyll a(4–5x), bacterial abundance and production (1.3x and 1.6x,respectively), Daphnia (3x) and total zooplankton biomass (2x).Although both total phytoplankton chlorophyll a and chlorophylla in the <35 µm size fraction were significantly lowerin unsieved mesocosms than in sieved mesocosms, sieving hadno significant effect on bacterial abundance or production. There was no statistical interaction between nutrient and zooplanktontreatments for total phytoplankton biomass or bacterial abundance, although there were marginally significant interactions forphytoplankton biomass <35 µm and bacterial production. Our results do not support the hypothesis that large cladoceransbecome less effective grazers with enrichment; rather, the differencebetween phytoplankton biomass in sieved versus unsieved zooplanktontreatments increased across the gradient of nutrient additions.Furthermore, there was no evidence that bacteria buffered phytoplanktonresponses to enrichment by either sequestering P or affectingthe growth of zooplankton.  相似文献

In meso-eutrophic Lake Constance (Germany-Austria-Switzerland),phytoplankton bioraass, pigments and water transparency, aswell as primary productivity, have been followed between 1980and 1989. During this period, municipal phosphorus loading declinedsignificantly. Since 1981, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP)concentrations during deep lake mixing have decreased from 3.0to currently 1 6 mmol m3 at a rate of 7% year1.Nitrate concentrations, by contrast, continued to rise. Duringthe period of maximum phosphorus loading, flushing through theoutlet and sedimentation were about equally important sinksof phosphorus from the euphotic zone. Recently, however, sedimentationand subsequent burial of P in the bottom deposits contributedabout three-quarters to the overall P-losses from the systemMain reasons for this shift are unchanged settling fluxes ofphosphorus out of the euphotic zone and decreasing concentrationsof total phosphorus in the water. Only during spring, do concentrations of soluble reactive phosphoruswithin the euphotic zone decrease in proportion to the formationof particulate organic matter. Later during the season, euphoticSRP concentrations continue to be low but are no longer matchedby high plankton biomass because phosphorus is efficiently removedby settling of particles In spite of the observed dramatic decreasein phosphorus loading since 1980, chlorophyll concentrationsand water transparency, as well as annual phytoplankton productivity(300 g C m2), have not shown a consistent downward trend. However, the intensity of phosphorus regeneration within theeuphoric zone, which can be used as a measure of the degreeof nutrient limitation, is likely to have increased significantlyThe most probable explanation for the insensitivity of importanttrophic state indicators to reduced nutrient loading is that,in Lake Constance, biomass accumulation to a greater extentis controlled by losses, mainly grazing by zooplankton and sedimentation, than by primary resources. This is concluded from the observationthat phytoplankton biomass always falls far short of the nutrient-dependentcarrying capacity of the system.  相似文献

Inorganic phosphorus uptake and regeneration in the OkhotskSea waters were investigated in July–August 1994 withthe use of radioisotopic techniques. The rates of PO4-P uptakeby microplankton in the upper mixed layer were between 1.5 and6.6 µg P l-1 day-1 (average 2.75) in areas of diatom dominance, and between 0.68 and 1.68 µg P l-1 day-1 (average 1.16)in areas of intense warming and summer phytoplankton minimum. The residence time of PO4-P standing stock in water at differentstations varied between 1.5 and 24 days (mean 9 days). The shareof bacterioplankton contributing to total PO4-P uptake was 50%in areas of the summer phytoplankton minimum and 20–30%in areas of diatom dominance. The PO4-P regeneration rate wasmeasured first time experimentally in the temperate sea. Itsrates varied from 0.30 to 1.65 µg P l-1 day-1. In areasof diatom dominance, it compensated with 30–60% of PO4-Puptake. In zones of summer phytoplankton minimum and in thelayers of deep chlorophyll maxima at 10–25 m depths, thePO4-P regeneration rate often exceeded its uptake. Primary phytoplanktonproduction correlated well with PO4-P uptake values in the uppermixed layer, while no correlation was found between primaryproduction and the ambient PO4-P content in water.  相似文献

Phytoplankton photosynthesis parameters in central Canadian lakes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Values for two biological parameters — (i) PBm, the lightsaturated rate of photosynthesis per unit of chlorophyll and(ii) , the slope of the light limited part of the photosynthesisversus light curve per unit of chlorophyll — must be knownin order to be able to estimate rates of phytoplankton primaryproduction from chlorophyll data. These parameters were measuredfor periods of up to 9 years in central Canadian lakes locatedin temperate, subarctic and arctic climatic zones. Regardlessof their geographic locations, lakes where integral photosynthesiswas nutrient limited had lower values of these parameters thandid lakes where integral photosynthesis was light limited. Temperatureset an upper limit to the variability of PBm but was not a goodpredictor of its actual value. Year-to-year variability of photosynthesisparameters in the most intensively studied group of lakes waslarge: annual means varied by a factor of three over a 9-yearperiod. Until the sources and extent of this variability areknown, accurate production estimates can be obtained from chlorophylldata only if PBm and are measured in each water body and inevery year. Implications for estimating primary production fromremotely-sensed chlorophyll data are discussed.  相似文献

The impact of fish-mediated changes on the structure and grazingof zooplankton on phytoplankton and bacterioplankton was studiedin Lake Søbygaard during the period 1984–92 bymeans of in vitro grazing experiments (14C-labelled phytoplankton,3H-labelled bacterioplankton) and model predictions. Measuredzooplankton clearance rates ranged from 0–25 ml l–1h–1 on phytoplankton to 0–33 ml l–1 h–1on bacterioplankton. The highest rates were found during thesummer when Daphnia spp. were dominant. As the phytoplanktonbiomass was substantially greater than that of bacterioplanktonthroughout the study period, ingestion of phytoplankton was26-fold greater than that of bacterioplankton. Multiple regressionanalysis of the experimental data revealed that Daphnia spp.,Bosmina longirostris and Cyclops vicinus, which were the dominantzooplankton, all contributed significantly to the variationin ingestion of phytoplankton, while only Daphnia spp. contributedsignificantly to that of bacterioplankton. Using estimated meanvalues for clearance and ingestion rates for different zooplankters,we calculated zooplankton grazing on phytoplankton and bacterioplanktonon the basis of monitoring data of lake plankton obtained duringa 9 year study period. Summer mean grazing ranged from 2 to4% of phytoplankton production and 2% of bacterioplankton productionto maxima of 53 and 88%, respectively. The grazing percentagedecreased with increasing density of planktivorous fish caughtin August each year using gill nets and shore-line electrofishing. The changes along a gradient of planktivorous fish abundanceseemed highest for bacterioplankton. Accordingly, the percentagecontribution of bacterioplankton to the total ingestion of thetwo carbon sources decreased from a summer mean value of 8%in Daphnia-dominated communities at lower fish density to 0.7–1.1%at high fish density, when cyclopoid copepods or Bosmina androtifers dominated. Likewise, the percentage of phytoplanktonproduction channelled through the bacteria varied, it beinghighest (5–8%) at high fish densities. It is argued thatthe negative impact of zooplankton grazing on bacterioplanktonin shallow lakes is highest at intermediate phosphorus levels, under which conditions Daphnia dominate the zooplankton community.  相似文献

Deep chlorophyll layers (DCL) are a common feature of oligotrophiclakes, yet the mechanisms that form and maintain them are notunderstood fully. These phytoplankton populations occur in themetalimnia of lakes where light levels are moderate to low,and where nutrient levels and zooplankton grazing pressure aredifferent than in the epilimnion. To test the importance ofnutrients and grazing pressure for algal growth in differentlake strata, microcosm experiments and monitoring were conductedin two oligotrophic lakes in the Rocky Mountains of North Americathat contain DCL. In situ microcosm experiments with naturalphytoplankton communities from three depth strata were conductedwith macronutrient additions and with and without the naturalzooplankton grazing communities. Alkaline phosphatase assaysand the in situ microcosm experiments indicated less nutrientlimitation in the metalimnia than in the epilimnia of both lakes.Zooplankton grazing in the experiments decreased algal populationgrowth rates by as much as 6% day–1, with impacts shiftingto progressively deeper strata over the summer. Zooplanktongrazing losses, however, were partially offset by nutrient recyclingthat increased algal growth rates. Depth-differential nutrientdeficiency and zooplankton grazing and recycling interactedto maintain the DCL in these lakes.  相似文献

Physical–chemical variables, phytoplankton biomass, speciescomposition and photosynthesis–irradiance (P-I) parameterswere analysed during 1 year in the Santo André Lagoon,SouthwestPortugal – a land-locked coastal ecosystem withtemporary connections with the sea. When the lagoon stayed closedthe observed phytoplankton blooms were mainly caused by Prorocentrumminimum, a potentially toxic dinoflagellate. It was dominantduring most of the year but the seawater inflow to the lagoontriggered a decrease in phytoplankton biomass and an abruptshift in species composition. The maximum photosynthetic rate(Pmax) ranged from 2.0 to 22.5 mg C (mg chlorophyll a)–1h–1 and the light saturation index (Ik), ranged from 5.2to 335.0 µE m–2 s–1, with winter minima andsummer maxima. Pmax and Ik were both positively correlated totemperature. Abundance ofP. minimum was associated with highnitrate concentrations whereas diatoms appear when ammonium, salinity and wind velocity are high. A mathematical model todescribe photosynthetic rate as a function of irradiance andtemperature [P (I, t)] was applied to the samples in which P.minimum was the dominant species  相似文献

The relationship between chlorophyll a (Chl a) and primary productivity(PP) in the uppermost water layer and the water column-based(0–15 m) integral values of those variables were examinedusing measurements taken in Lake Kinneret (Israel) from 1990to 2003. In 81% of all Chl a profiles examined, the distributionwas fairly uniform within the entire 0–15 m water column, and 12.3% of instances showed a prominent subsurface maximum, when the lake phytoplankton was dominated by the dinoflagellatePeridinium gatunense. Chl a can be reliably estimated by remotesensing techniques in the productive and turbid water of LakeKinneret, since Chl a concentration at surface layers can beextrapolated to the entire water column. Light vertical attenuationcoefficient average for wavelengths from 400 to 700 nm, Kd,ranged from 0.203 to 1.954 m–1 and showed high degreeof temporal variation. The maximal rate of photosynthetic efficiency,PBopt [average 3.16 (±1.50)], ranged from 0.25 to 8.85mg C m–3 h–1 mg Chl a–1. Using measured dataof Chl a, PBopt, and light as an input, a simple depth-integratedPP model allowed plausible simulation of PP. However, a lackof correlation between photosynthetic activity and temperature(or other variable with remotely sensed potential) renders theuse of models that require input of photosynthetic efficiencyto calculate integrated PP of little value in the case of productiveand turbid Lake Kinneret.  相似文献

Microbial potential uptake and regeneration rates of ammonium(NH4+) were studied along a salinity gradient (salinities 0.2–34.4)in the Mississippi River plume during an extreme drought inspring 2000. Chlorophyll concentrations up to 30 µg L–1were highest in the low- and mid-salinity regions (salinities8.5–28.2) and comparable to records of other years butextended over smaller areas than during periods of normal riverflow. Bacterial biomass (5.1–28.3 µg C L–1)was at the low end of the range observed in normal flow years, decreased with distance from the river mouth and did not peakwith chlorophyll. Heterotrophic nanoflagellate abundance (1.4–4.0µg C L–1) did not reflect phytoplankton and bacterialspatial distribution but peaked at 9.2 µg C L–1at salinity 8.5. Microbial NH4+ regeneration rates were estimatedby 15NH4+ isotope dilution experiments for the whole microbialcommunity, under light and dark conditions, and for the <2µm bacterium-dominated size fraction. Microbial NH4+ regenerationrates (0.018–0.124 µmol N L–1 h–1) werelow relative to previous reports and peaked at salinity 28.Total NH4+ regeneration rates were higher than those in the<2 µm size fraction at only four stations, suggestingthat bacterial mineralization was a significant component ofNH4+ recycling in some parts of the river plume. Higher NH4+regeneration in whole-water samples versus <2 µm fractionsprovided evidence for microbial grazing in regions where chlorophylland regeneration rates peaked and at two full-salinity stations.  相似文献

The distribution and characteristics of phytoplankton in theSkagerrak in August–September 2000 were analysed in orderto evaluate the importance of subsurface phytoplankton peaksto water column ecology and primary production. In areas affectedby outflow from the Baltic, enhanced chlorophyll concentrationswere found in the warm surface waters (i.e. upper 10–20m). However, for the central Skagerrak, the major part (50–80%)of the chlorophyll in the water column was found below the warmsurface waters. The highest chlorophyll concentrations (up to>18 µg l-1) in the study area were also found belowthe warm surface waters and up to 95% of total water columnprimary production was recorded below the warm surface waterlayer. Measurements of variable fluorescence (Fv/Fm) indicatedthe greatest potential capacity for electron flow in photosystemII in phytoplankton was located below the warm surface waters.Spectrophotometrically determined pigment ratios suggest thatthe enhanced capacity for photosynthesis in the deeper watersmay be related to greater nutrient availability here than insurface waters. Subsurface chlorophyll distributions seen inrelation to the different water masses identified in the area,as well as community analysis of the phytoplankton present inthe subsurface peaks, indicate the presence of at least threedistinct subsurface phytoplankton blooms in the Skagerrak duringthe study period. Local oxygen saturation maxima recorded immediatelyabove the subsurface peaks provide in situ evidence that thesepeaks are photosynthetically active. This suggests that newproduction is taking place in these peaks, although quantificationof this production is hampered due to a lack of informationconcerning the initial conditions in and lifetime of the subsurfacepeaks. The subsurface phytoplankton peaks were, generally, foundimmediately above an oxygen minimum that covered the entirestudy area. In the relatively cold deep Atlantic water foundbelow the oxygen minimum layer, no or very little chlorophyllwas recorded and oxygen concentrations increased. Thus, it isargued that the respiration of the organic material producedin the upper part of the water column during late summer mayprimarily occur in the intermediate layers of the water column.  相似文献

The Lake Michigan deep chlorophyll maximum during July 1977was a broad band of phytoplankton –15 m thick rather thanthe thin layers observed in smaller lakes. The maximum concentrationof chlorophyll was typically four times surface values. 14Cuptake incubations showed that the deep plankton layer was aviable component of the pelagic ecosystem accounting for upto 60% of primary production on an areal (m2) basis. The LakeMichigan chlorophyll maximum was composed primarily of largediatoms, filaxnentous green algae, and flagellates. Althoughlarge scale physical processes such as seiches had some effecton the chlorophyll maximum, the basic integrity of the layerwas maintained by biological processes. In particular, epilinmeticnutrient depletion was apparently a major factor affecting thevertical distribution of phytoplankton. Application of a diffusionmodel to the chemical and chlorophyll data indicated that nutrientuptake and primary production by phytoplankton were more importantin determining chemical and chlorophyll vertical profiles thandiffusivity. 1Contribution No. 389 from the Great Lakes Research Division,University of Michigan.  相似文献

This study relates to the ecology of Dictyosphaerium pulchellum Wood in Delamere Lake in Cheshire, UK. Dictyosphaerium pulchellum is a cosmopolitan, green colonial phytoplankton species that occasionally forms dense, monospecific populations in lakes. Delamere Lake is a small, shallow, acid lake (mean pH, 4.5) with very high phytoplankton biomass (annual mean chlorophyll a, 290 μg l−1) and devoid of any significant cladoceran population, the efficient grazers of phytoplankton. A predominantly unicellular form of D. pulchellum was the dominant species in Lake Delamere, and it comprised on average ca. 80% (maximum >99%) of the lake phytoplankton biovolume. Laboratory and lake experiments were conducted on this species showed that its pH tolerance varied between 2.4 and 10.7, and its optimum tolerance range between 3.3 and 8.5 depending on other environmental variables. Low pH was not responsible for the unicellular habit of this alga, but a very high nutrient regime could be an important factor. Bioassays revealed that in Delamere Lake this species was limited by nitrogen, but nitrogen did not hamper high growth in the lake. Dictyosphaerium pulchellum can persist at low light levels, tolerate CO2-deficiency and can grow in polyhumic water with water colour around 300 mg Pt l−1, but probably not in darker waters. The dominance of D. pulchellum in Delamere Lake is apparently due to a combination of several factors: its ability to tolerate both low pH and high turbidity, exploit high nutrient conditions, absence of effective grazing pressure by zooplankton and being a superior competitor.  相似文献

Phytoplankton and zooplankton development in a lowland, temperate river   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The longitudinal and seasonal patterns of plankton developmentwere examined over 2 years in a lowland, temperate river: theRideau River (Ontario, Canada). Following an initial decreasein phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass as water flowed fromthe headwaters into the Rideau River proper, there was an increasein chlorophyll a (chl a) and zooplankton biomass with downstreamtravel. At approximately river km 60, both phytoplankton andzooplankton reached their maximum biomass of 27 µg l–1(chl a) and 470 µg l–1 (dry mass), respectively.Downstream of river km 60, the biomass of both planktonic communitiesdeclined significantly despite increasing nutrient concentrationsand favorable light conditions. These downstream declines maybe due to the feeding activity of the exotic zebra mussel (Dreissenapolymorpha) which was at high density in downstream reaches(>1000 individuals m–2). There was no evidence forlongitudinal phasing of phytoplankton and zooplankton, as increasesand decreases in chl a and zooplankton biomass appeared to coincide.Overall, chl a was best predicted by total phosphorus (R2=0.43),whereas zooplankton biomass was best predicted by chl a (R2=0.20).There was no evidence for significant grazing effects of zooplanktonon phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

Primary production was measured for 7 years, using the in situ14C-method in hypertrophic Hartbeespoort Dam, South Africa,to examine the influence of light and water temperature on theupper limit of Microcystis aeruginosa production. Water temperaturesvaried from 11 to >25°C and chlorophyll concentrationsreached 6500 mg m–3. The maximum volumetric rate of production(Amax) was 12->8800 mg C m–3 h–1 with areal productions(A) of 69->3300 mg C m–2 h–1 for euphotic zonedepths of <0.5–8.4 m. The intrinsic parameters of phytoplanktonproduction (, Amax/B, Ik) indicated that the phytoplankton populationwas adapted to high light levels. Both Amax/B and Ik were correlatedwith temperature. Under optimal conditions, , the theoreticalupper limit of A, was calculated to be 2.8 g Cm–2 h–1,while the measured rate was 2.5 g Cm–2 h–1. Measuredareal rates exceeding were overestimated due to methodologicalproblems when working with Microcystis scums. Light and watertemperature interacted to yield high production rates: watertemperature through its direct effect on photosynthetic ratesand indirectly in the formation of diurnal mixed layers; lightindirectly through water temperature and directly through itsattenuation and induction of light-adapted physiology in Microcystis.  相似文献

Planktonic primary production in the German Wadden Sea   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
By combining weekly data of irradiance, attenuation and chlorophylla concentrations with photosynthesis (P) versus light intensity(E) curve characteristics, the annual cycle of planktonic primaryproduction in the estuarine part of the Northfrisian WaddenSea was computed for a 2 year period. Daily water column particulategross production ranged from 5 to 2200 mg C m–2 day–1and showed a seasonal pattern similar to chlorophyll a. Budgetcalculation yielded annual gross particulate primary productionsof 124 and 176 g C m–2 year–1 in 1995 and 1996,respectively. Annual amounts of phytoplankton respiration, calculatedaccording to a two-compartment model of Langdon [in Li,W.K.W.and Maestrini,S.Y. (eds), Measurement of Primary Productionfrom the Molecular to the Global Scale. International Councilfor the Exploration of the Sea, Copenhagen, 1993, pp. 20–36],and dissolved production in 1996, were both in the range of24–39 g C m–2 year–1. Annual total net productionwas thus very similar to particulate gross production (127 and177 g C m–2 year–1 in 1995 and 1996, respectively).Phytoplankton growth was low or even negative in winter. Inspring and summer, production/biomass (Pr/B) ratios varied from0.2 up to 1.7. Phytoplankton growth during the growth seasonalways surpassed average flushing time in the area, thus underliningthe potential of local phytoplankton bloom development in thispart of the Wadden Sea. The chlorophyll-specific maximum photosyntheticrate (PBmax) ranged from 0.8 to 9.9 mg C mg–1 Chl h–1and was strongly correlated with water temperature (r2 = 0.67).By contrast, there was no clear seasonal cycle in B, which rangedfrom 0.007 to 0.039 mg C mg–1 Chl h–1 (µmolphotons m–2 s–1)–1. Its variability was muchless than PBmax and independent of temperature. The magnitudeand part of the variability of PBmax and B are presumably causedby changes in species composition, as evidenced from the rangeof these parameters found among 10 predominant diatom speciesisolated from the Wadden Sea. The ratio of average light conditionsin the water column (Eav) to the light saturation parameterEk indicates that primary production in the Wadden Sea regionunder study is predominantly controlled by light limitationand that nutrient limitation was likely to occur for a few hoursper day only during 5 (dissolved inorganic nitrogen) to 10 (PO4,Si) weeks in the 2 year period investigated.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. In oligotrophic lakes, phytoplankton and bacteria growing in the deep chlorophyll maximum in the cool metalimnion of lakes often dominate biomass and production, but the importance of this source of food for zooplankton is unknown.
2. During much of the day, Daphnia rosea in two mountain lakes inhabited deep chlorophyll layers where food availability was at least equal to that in the epilimnion.
3. To determine the importance of the two strata (epilimnion and metalimnion) for Daphnia , we used a cross-classified factorial experiment to measure how epilimnetic and metalimnetic food and temperature (10 and 16 °C) influenced survival, growth and reproduction.
4. Daphnia survived and grew better when fed seston from the epilimnion of one lake, although chlorophyll, particulate nitrogen and particulate carbon were 2–2.5 times greater in the metalimnion.
5. Temperature had no significant influence on Daphnia survival or growth. Similar results were obtained with food from the second lake, with Daphnia surviving and reproducing better when provided with epilimnetic, rather than metalimnetic food, although the quantities of chlorophyll and carbon in the two strata were similar.
6. Food quality, rather than quantity or temperature, appeared to be the most important determinant influencing survival, growth and reproduction, and the greater food quantity in the metalimnia was not used effectively by the Daphnia .  相似文献
