Two categories of behaviour involving lateralized posture were observed in semi-natural conditions in ostriches (Struthio camelus). Observing preferences for left or right foot, both in the forward foot posture (the foot standing in front at rest) and the starting foot used to initiate locomotion, a population-level right-foot preference was shown for the whole group and for each of the three age ranges considered (chick, young and adult). Ostriches are known to rely upon a lateralized behaviour during hatching (using their right foot to break the egg shell) suggesting the hypothesis that the precocious motor laterality observed at hatching might stand as a precursor of limb preference later in development, as already observed in other avian species.  相似文献

The use of data-loggers has permitted to explore the biology of free-ranging animals. However, this method has also been reported to reduce reproductive success while the reasons of this deleterious effect remain poorly documented. In this study, we aimed to identify critical periods of the breeding cycle of Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) when the reproductive success may decrease because of instrumentation. For this purpose, we monitored 40 pairs, where one parent was instrumented before egg laying and 30 pairs without devices (controls). These pairs were followed at least during the incubation period but the majority was monitored during the entire breeding season. Reproductive success was affected in pairs where males were instrumented. This was not due to extra chick mortality during chick rearing but to a significantly lower hatching success. Moreover, the use of artificial eggs recording incubation temperatures and egg rotation indicated that in instrumented incubating males, eggs spent as much time at optimal incubation temperatures as control eggs but were rotated at a higher frequency. In Adélie penguins, males initiate incubation and it has been established that the early stage of incubation is one of the most critical periods for embryonic development. The low hatching rate observed in instrumented males was associated with a higher egg rotation rate, perhaps as a stress response to the presence of the instrument. Even though the causal effects remain unclear, instrumentation severely affected hatching success. For these reasons, we recommend equipping birds after the early incubation.  相似文献

Crested penguins (genus Eudyptes) have a peculiar hatching pattern, with the first-laid egg (A-egg) hatching after the second-laid egg (B-egg) and chicks from A-eggs typically having a much lower survival probability. Maternal yolk androgens have been suggested to contribute to the competitive superiority of the B-chick in southern rockhopper penguins Eudyptes chrysocome, given their important role in mediating sibling competition in other species. We therefore increased the yolk androgen levels in freshly-laid eggs and examined the consequences for sibling competition - via effects on embryonic developmental times, chick growth and early survival. We placed one androgen-treated egg and one control egg into each foster nest, matching them for mass, laying date and laying order. The androgen treatment did not significantly affect embryonic developmental times or chick measurements at hatching. However, elevated yolk androgen levels benefitted chick growth in interaction with the number of siblings in a brood. Chicks from androgen-treated eggs had faster growth in the presence of a sibling than chicks from control eggs. Under these circumstances they also had a higher survival probability. Thus maternal androgens appear to reinforce the observed hatching pattern, facilitating brood reduction. This contrasts to most previous studies in other species where yolk androgens have been shown to compensate for the negative consequences of delayed hatching within the brood hierarchy.  相似文献

A series of incubation and broiler growth studies were conducted using one strain of broiler chicken (fast feathering dam line) observing incubation effects on femoral bone ash % at hatch and the ability of the bird to remain standing at 6 weeks of age (Latency-To-Lie). Egg shell temperatures during incubation were consistently recorded. Parsimonious models were developed across eight studies using stepwise multiple linear regression of egg shell temperatures over 3-day periods and both bone ash at hatch and Latency-To-Lie. A model for bone ash at hatch explained 70% of the variation in this factor and revealed an association with lower egg shell temperatures during days 4–6 and 13–15 and higher egg shell temperatures during days 16–18 of incubation. Bone ash at hatch and subsequent Latency-To-Lie were positively correlated (r = 0.57, P<0.05). A model described 66% of the variation Latency-To-Lie showing significant association of the interaction of femoral ash at hatch and lower average egg shell temperatures over the first 15 days of incubation. Lower egg shell temperature in the early to mid incubation process (days 1–15) and higher egg shell temperatures at a later stage (days 16–18) will both tend to delay the hatch time of incubating eggs. Incubation profiles that resulted in later hatching chicks produced birds which could remain standing for a longer time at 6 weeks of age. This supports a contention that the effects of incubation observed in many studies may in fact relate more to earlier hatching and longer sojourn of the hatched chick in the final stage incubator. The implication of these outcomes are that the optimum egg shell temperature during incubation for broiler leg strength development may be lower than that regarded as ideal (37.8°C) for maximum hatchability and chick growth.  相似文献

We studied the effect of egg size on chick growth in the chinstrap penguin under natural non-manipulative, conditions. The influence of egg size on chick mass at hatching, 15 and 45 days of age was analysed controlling for the effect of hatching date, as hatching date has been repeatedly associated with chick growth in this species. Egg volume explained 20% of the variation in the body mass of chicks at hatching. Its effect disappeared as chicks grew, being statistically not significant at the age of 15 and 45 days. Egg volume asymmetry also had no role in determining chicks' growth asymmetries. Accepted: 6 June 1998  相似文献

Embryonic calls occur 1–3 d before hatching among precocial and some altricial birds. In precocial species, calls may synchronize hatching among siblings or, in semi-precocial species, elicit parental attention to, and often thermoregulation of, the hatching egg. Much less is known about the functional significance of calls in fully altricial species. In this study, naturalistic observations and laboratory experiments were used to document factors affecting calling and the parental responses to calls in one altricial species, the budgerigar Melopsittacus undulatus. Budgerigar chicks hatch asynchronously and vocalize 24–48 h before hatching. Embryonic calling rates increase at higher egg temperatures, and also as embryos near hatching. Parents easily locate a calling egg in their clutch, even among a large brood of much older, vocalizing nestlings. Furthermore, they actively assist in the last stages of hatching by helping to break the shell along the crack in the egg. Both observational and experimental evidence suggests that embryonic vocalizations are distinctive signals that increase parental attention and care, and may stimulate hatching assistance to a calling egg.  相似文献

The egg tooth of squamates evolved to facilitate hatching from mineralized eggshells. Squamate reptiles can assist their hatching with a single unpaired egg tooth (unidentates) or double egg teeth (geckos and dibamids). Egg tooth ontogeny in two gekkotan species, the leopard gecko Eublepharis macularius and the mourning gecko Lepidodactylus lugubris, was compared using microtomography, scanning electron microscopy, and light microscopy. Investigated species are characterized by different hardnesses of their eggshells. Leopard geckos eggs have a relatively soft and flexible parchment (leathery) shell, while eggshells of mourning geckos are hard and rigid. Embryos of both species, like other Gekkota, have double egg teeth, but the morphology of these structures differs between the investigated species. These differences in shape, localization, and spatial orientation were present from the earliest stages of embryonic development. In mourning gecko, anlagen of differentiating egg teeth change their position on the palate during embryonic development. Initially they are separated by condensed mesenchyme, but later in development, their enamel organs are connected. In leopard geckos, the localization of egg tooth germs does not change, but their spatial orientation does. Egg teeth of this species shift from inward to outward orientation. This is likely related to differences in structure and mechanical properties of eggshells in the studied species. In investigated species, two hatching mechanisms are possible during emergence of young individuals. We speculate that mourning geckos break the eggshell through puncturing action with egg teeth, similar to the pipping phase of chick and turtles embryos. Egg teeth of leopard geckos cut egg membranes similarly to most squamates. Our results also revealed differences in egg tooth implantation between Gekkota and Unidentata: gekkotan egg teeth are subthecodont (in shallow sockets), while those in unidentates are acrodont (attached to the top of the alveolar ridge). © 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLC  相似文献

The biology of resting eggs of monogonont rotifers is reviewed, covering literature published since the last major review by Gilbert (1974). The topics examined include resting egg production, morphology and species specificity, hatching, and evolutionary significance. Four major determinants of resting egg production are identified: mictic female production, male activity and fertility, female susceptibility to fertilization, and fertilized female fecundity. Recent work in these four areas is discussed as well as resting egg production in natural populations. Resting egg morphology, particularly shell structure and internal organization, is compared among species. Recent reports on the control of resting egg hatching in the laboratory are examined and the importance of temperature, light, diet, and salinity is reviewed. Two hatching patterns are contrasted, the first where eggs hatch at regular intervals over extended periods and the second where hatching is synchronized to some environmental cue. A latent period after resting egg formation, during which no hatching occurs, is defined for several species. The adaptive features of resting eggs are outlined including their contribution to genetic variability through recombination, their provision for environmental escape by dormancy, and their colonizing function resulting from their ease of dispersal. The type of cue utilized to initiate mictic female production as well as the pattern of resting egg hatching is related to environmental predictability.  相似文献

This study reports that Corsican blue tit (Parus caeruleus ogliastrae) nests contain between one to five aromatic herb species between the onset of egg laying till the chicks’ finished growth 13 d after hatching. An herb removal experiment during the chick stage shows that blue tits bring fresh aromatic material 1–5 d after herb removal. Nests with a series of distinct odour classes easily perceived by humans have never been reported in birds. A new ‘Potpourri’ hypothesis is proposed that may explain the functional significance of this behaviour.  相似文献

The relationships between egg size, chick size at hatching and chick survival in Whimbrels Numenius phaeopus were studied over a three-year period in the Shetland Isles. Three measurements of chick size at hatching were all positively correlated with egg volume, though the relationship was strongest with hatchling body-weight. In two of the three years the proportion of chicks from a brood which survived to fledging increased significantly with the mean hatching weight of chicks in the brood. Within broods, a significant effect of hatching weight on survival was detectable only up to 7 days after hatching. Between years the egg volumes and hatchling weights of individual female Whimbrels showed relatively little variability, indicating that these attributes could be controlled to a large extent by inheritance.  相似文献

Sea birds with long incubation periods are identified, togetherwith the features of their incubation physiology which distinguishthem from birds in general. Most sea birds with prolonged incubationare members of the order Procellariformes. The majority of Pelecaniformesand Charadniformes with long incubation periods are tropicalspecies. The total amount of water lost from the egg duringincubation is a similar fraction of the initial egg weight insea birds with prolonged incubation as in other birds. The oxygenconsumption of the newly hatched chick is similarly relatedto the chick weight, regardless of the duration of incubation.Within the constraints imposed by these similarities, sea birdswith prolonged incubation display a number of adaptations. Thedaily rate of water loss from the egg, the water vapor conductanceof the egg shell, and the total functional pore area of theegg are all relatively low in sea birds with prolonged incubation. The eggs of sea birds with long incubation times are large inrelation to the size of the adult bird in the two species thathave been studied, the high energy content of the egg is paralleledby the greater total amount of oxygen consumed during incubation. However, the growth of the embryo is relatively slow in at leastone sea bird with a long incubation time so that prolonged incubationprobably entails a comparatively high allocation of energy resourcesto maintenance requirements. In some species with prolongedincubation, the interval between pipping and hatching is alsolong and it appears to be a period of great physiological importance.Ecologically prolonged incubation is associated with eitherpelagic feeding habits or a tropical environment, both factorsmay be related to food supply.  相似文献

The initial eggs produced by broiler breeder hens are relatively small compared with later in the production cycle. An evaluation of indices related to hatchability is required when these eggs are to be used for the production of broiler chicks. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate characteristics related to the hatchability of eggs from pullet-to-breeder transition phase, at 25 and 27 weeks of age, and from the peak of production period and five weeks later, at 32 and 37 weeks of age. Eggs from birds 25 weeks had a lesser fertility in Experiment 1. Mortality occurred unevenly in early (1–5 days), middle (6–17 days) and late (18–21 days) incubation, and greater mortality was observed after the internal membrane was ruptured. The younger the hen, the lighter the egg, chick, and shell, and the longer the time required to complete the hatching process. In Experiment 2, greater mortalities were observed at the early period (1–5 days) and after “pipping” of the internal and external membranes. Embryos from heavy eggs of breeder hens 37 weeks of age took less time to complete the hatching process. Results indicated the larger the egg, the heavier the chick and shell, and the lesser the shell percentage. As breeder age advanced, characteristics related to egg fertility and hatchability improved.  相似文献

The paper describes the relationships between adult age, hatching date, egg volume, brood size, hatching sequence, chick weight at hatching, chick growth rate and chick body size for a population of Great skuas in Shetland. The relative importance of these factors, and food availability, is assessed in determining chick size, weight, and growth rate.  相似文献

Clutches of Red Grouse eggs were collected from the wild and subsequent hatching and rearing done in standard conditions in captivity. Variations in chick survival from one clutch to another in the same year were related to differences in hatch weight. Hatch weight was determined only partly by egg size. Weight loss between laying and hatching was related to survival independently of egg size. Variation in this weight loss obscured any simple relationship between egg size and survival, except in eggs laid by captive hens. Intrinsic differences amongst hens caused some variations in laying date, egg size, hatch weight and chick survival. Variations in egg size and hatch weight accounted for less than half the variation in survival; other unmeasured intrinsic factors were also important. Big clutches hatched earlier than small ones. The commonest clutches were of seven and eight eggs, with six and nine frequent. Very big clutches of ten or more eggs were infrequent and chicks from them sometimes survived worse than from smaller clutches. As in other species, the commonest clutch sizes were not the most productive. There was no simple relationship between egg size and clutch size.  相似文献

Summary In the gentoo penguin, Pygoscelis papua, we examined the effects of intra-clutch egg size differences and hatching asynchrony on differential chick growth and survival (including post-fledging survival), in five years for which indices of food supply were available. An initial size hierarchy within-broods at hatching was due to hatching asynchrony not intra-clutch egg size differences. In 1988 only (a poor food year), the weight advantage gained by the first-hatched (A) chick persisted to the end of brooding (30 days), with more second-hatched (B) chicks dying. There was no difference between A- and B-chick weights at fledging (60 days) or in overall chick survival between synchronous and asynchronous broods in any year. Postfledging survival (measured in one year) was not related to fledging weight or hatching order. These results provide only partial support for the hypothesis that gentoo penguins operate a brood reduction strategy to optimise chick survival in years of low food availability. We suggest that hatching asynchrony in gentoo penguins may result from selection to keep the first egg warm as soon as it is laid, due to extreme low ambient temperatures.  相似文献

Epiphanes senta is a littoral rotifer species that occurs in temporary waters and displays a mating behaviour which has not, to my knowledge, so far been described for monogonont rotifers. Monogonont rotifers show distinctive periods within their life cycle during which mictic females appear. Mictic females produce haploid eggs that develop into males or into diapausing eggs if fertilized. The females of E. senta are mostly stationary on the substrate while males are more active swimmers. If they encounter eggs with female embryos of their own species, they attend them and mate with the hatching female. Experiments showed that males are able to discriminate between male, female and diapausing eggs. They exhibit a strong preference for female eggs that are only a few hours away from hatching compared with eggs in early developmental stages. Further experiments did not show any significant differences in male attendance of mictic and amictic eggs. It is hypothesized that males judge the age of a female egg by sensing a chemical that is produced by the growing embryo and diffuses through the egg shell. The male mating behaviour is similar to precopulatory mate guarding known from arthropods but it lacks the monopolization of the female by the male.  相似文献

The egg mass of Hydrobia neglecta contains a single egg, whilethat of H. ventrosa contains up to three eggs. At hatching H.neglecta has a significantly greater shell length than H. ventrosaand the late embryos and young snails of the two species canbe separated according to the pigmentation of the head region. The young snails can also be separated on the basis of surfaceornamentation of the shell and comparisons with the closelyrelated H. ulvae and Potamopyrgus jenkinsi show how the basicpattern of shell sculpturing differs in the four species. Thesedifferences are discussed in relation to the mode of development. (Received 14 February 1980;  相似文献

Parents affect offspring fitness by propagule size and quality, selection of oviposition site, quality of incubation, feeding of dependent young, and their defence against predators and parasites. Despite many case studies on each of these topics, this knowledge has not been rigorously integrated into individual parental care traits for any taxon. Consequently, we lack a comprehensive, quantitative assessment of how parental care modifies offspring phenotypes. This meta‐analysis of 283 studies with 1805 correlations between egg size and offspring quality in birds is intended to fill this gap. The large sample size enabled testing of how the magnitude of the relationship between egg size and offspring quality depends on a number of variables. Egg size was positively related to nearly all studied offspring traits across all stages of the offspring life cycle. Not surprisingly, the relationship was strongest at hatching but persisted until the post‐fledging stage. Morphological traits were the most closely related to egg size but significant relationships were also found with hatching success, chick survival, and growth rate. Non‐significant effect sizes were found for egg fertility, chick immunity, behaviour, and life‐history or sexual traits. Effect size did not depend on whether chicks were raised by their natural parents or were cross‐fostered to other territories. Effect size did not depend on species‐specific traits such as developmental mode, clutch size, and relative size of the egg, but was larger if tested in captive compared to wild populations and between rather than within broods. In sum, published studies support the view that egg size affects juvenile survival. There are very few studies that tested the relationship between egg size and the fecundity component of offspring fitness, and no studies on offspring survival as adults or on global fitness. More data are also needed for the relationships between egg size and offspring behavioural and physiological traits. It remains to be established whether the relationship between egg size and offspring performance depends on the quality of the offspring environment. Positive effect sizes found in this study are likely to be driven by a causal effect of egg size on offspring quality. However, more studies that control for potential confounding effects of parental post‐hatching care, genes, and egg composition are needed to establish firmly this causal link.  相似文献

Morphological development, allometric growth and behaviour of hatchery-reared California halibut Paralichthys californicus were studied from hatching to metamorphosis (42 days post hatch, dph) at 187° C. Mean standard length ( L S) of larvae and juveniles increased from 2.1 mm at hatching to 10.5 mm at metamorphosis with the increase in length being approximately linear. Stages of morphological development were described using the alphabetic staging (A–I) used for other flatfish species. Organogenesis and differentiation were more rapid and complex in yolk-sac (hatching, stage A–3 dph, stage B), preflexion (3–19 dph, stages B–C), and flexion larvae (from 20 to 23 dph, stages D–E), as larvae developed most of their sensory, feeding, respiratory and swimming systems. After notochord flexion at 24–25 dph (stage F), most morphological changes were related to the progressive transformation from a bilateral symmetrical larva to an asymmetrical benthic juvenile (42 dph, stages G–I).  相似文献
