Cytology of pseudomyxoma peritonei
The cytology of five cases of pseudomyxoma peritonei is described. It is characterized by large masses of mucinous material, some of which is wrapped up in a network of elongated fibroblast-like cells. Irregular clusters of flat branching vimentin-positive fibroblast-like cells may be found as the disease progresses. Goblet or tumour cells were not found in the cytology preparations, although they were seen in the histological sections of the one case which was biopsied. The appendiceal origin of pseudomyxoma peritonei could not be traced in three of four male patients, and the cause of the disease remained undetermined. Autopsy of the fourth case demonstrated a complete replacement of the appendix by mucus. 相似文献

The development and progression of lung adenocarcinoma, one of the most common cancers, is driven by the interplay of genetic and epigenetic changes and the role of chromatin structure in malignant transformation remains poorly understood. We used systematic nucleosome distribution and chromatin accessibility microarray mapping platforms to analyze the genome-wide chromatin structure from normal tissues and from primary lung adenocarcinoma of different grades and stages. We identified chromatin-based patterns across different patients with lung adenocarcinoma of different cancer grade and stage. Low-grade cancers had nucleosome distributions very different compared with the corresponding normal tissue but had nearly identical chromatin accessibility. Conversely, nucleosome distributions of high-grade cancers showed few differences. Substantial disruptions in chromosomal accessibility were seen in a patient with a high-grade and high-stage tumor. These data imply that chromatin structure changes during the progression of lung adenocarcinoma. We have therefore developed a model in which low-grade lung adenocarcinomas are linked to changes in nucleosome distributions, whereas higher-grade tumors are linked to large-scale chromosomal changes. These results provide a foundation for the development of a comprehensive framework linking the general and locus-specific roles of chromatin structure to lung cancer progression. We propose that this strategy has the potential to identify a new class of chromatin-based diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic markers in cancer progression. 相似文献

The cytologic findings in five cases of pseudomyxoma peritonei associated with ovarian mucinous tumors are reported. The evidence suggests that if mucinous or gelatinous ascitic fluid is received in the laboratory and is shown to contain a dual cell population of round cells of mesothelial origin and spindle-shaped cells of fibroblastic origin together with lakes of fibrillar mucin, a cytologic diagnosis of pseudomyxoma peritonei can be made with confidence. It will usually indicate mucinous neoplasia of the appendix or ovary. In the case of ovarian neoplasia, the tumor is most likely to be a low-malignant-potential mucinous tumor. The patient's prognosis, however, will be that of mucinous carcinoma rather than of usual borderline tumors of the ovary. 相似文献

Androgen receptors (AR) have been identified in the human endometrium, but their role in endometrial function and development towards endometrial receptivity remains poorly understood. In an effort to study the regulation and possible function in endometrial epithelium, we utilized the well-differentiated endometrial adenocarcinoma cell line, Ishikawa, as a model system. This cell line has proven to be stable, hormonally responsive, contains both estrogen and progesterone receptors, and has been shown to express endometrial proteins in a hormone responsive manner. In the present study, we demonstrate that Ishikawa cells also express AR, based on immunohistochemical staining, radioactive binding studies, RT-PCR and Northern blot analysis. The expression of AR is induced in Ishikawa cells by estrogens, similar to that reported for normal endometrium. Further, using an estrogen-responsive gene that has been characterized in this cell line, alkaline phosphatase, we show that androgens act as antiestrogens in diethylstilbestrol (DES) treated cells, inhibiting enzymatic activity in a dose-dependent manner. These data support a physiologic role for AR in the endometrium. Elevations in endometrial AR in certain clinical situations such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) may amplify the effects of androgens on the endometrium leading to suspected defects in uterine receptivity, higher than expected infertility and high miscarriage rates observed in patients with this disorder. 相似文献

This paper reports the finding of benign foreign-body-type multinucleated giant cells and clumps of adenocarcinoma cells in gastric brushing cytology specimens of a case confirmed by radiology and histology as pneumatosis cystoides gastrica associated with an ulcerated carcinoma. Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) plays a key role in the lipid metabolism and transporting. It can catalyze the hydrolysis of chylomicron
and very low-density lipoprotein triglyceride. Moreover, the abnormality of LPL associates with many pathophysiological conditions.
Herein cDNA microarray and Northern blots analysis were used to study the expression of lipoprotein lipase in lung adenocarcinoma
tissues. There were 113 genes of all tested blots in cDNA microarray expressed lowly. LPL gene is expressed lowly at the average
ratio 0.26 (Cy5/Cy3) in lung adenocarcinoma tissues over controls. Northern blots confirmed those changes detected from the

A 71-year-old woman with uveitis was referred to our hospital for further examination of the possible underlying diseases.
In roentgenological examination with plain X-ray and CT scan, hilar and mediastinal lymphadenopathy and a mass shadow in the
right upper lung field was observed, whereas fibrotic changes were not obvious in both lung fields. Transbronchial lung biopsy
with fiberoptic bronchoscope revealed granulomatous interstitial pneumonia. CD4-positive lymphocytes were increased in bronchoalveolar
lavage. The patient was diagnosed as having sarcoidosis. Subsequently, right upper lobectomy was performed, and Stage I lung
adenocarcinoma was diagnosed. The patient is under follow up without medication and the disease has been stable for two years.
A relationship between epithelioid granulomatosis and malignant diseases is discussed and a review of the literature is given.
Since it is still controversial as to the incidence of malignant diseases in sarcoidosis patients, it is important to accumulate

OBJECTIVE: To investigate mean nuclear volume of cells in well-differentiated adenocarcinomas (20 cases) and carcinoma in situ (20 cases) of the gallbladder by the principle of estimation of the volume of particles with arbitrary shapes. STUDY DESIGN: Hematoxylin and eosin-stained, 4-micron-thick, vertical sections from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue blocks were analyzed by using a projection microscope with a 100:1 oil immersion objective (NA 1.3); the final magnification was 2,500:1. The measurements were carried out in 10 microscopic fields for each slide. Mean nuclear volume was obtained by the stereologic method of point-sampled intercepts for vertical sections. RESULTS: Mean nuclear volume in well-differentiated adenocarcinomas (127.67 +/- 46.95 micron 3) was significantly larger than in carcinoma in situ (69.17 +/- 15.74 micron 3) (P < .000001). CONCLUSION: Stereologic estimation of mean nuclear volume may be helpful in the discrimination of malignant and borderline lesions of the gallbladder. 相似文献
