We previously reported that the dried peel powder of Citrus kawachiensis, one of the citrus products of Ehime, Japan, exerted anti-inflammatory effects in the brain of a lipopolysaccharide-injected systemic inflammation animal model. Inflammation is one of the main mechanisms underlying aging in the brain; therefore, we herein evaluated the anti-inflammatory and other effects of the dried peel powder of C. kawachiensis in the senescence-accelerated mouse-prone 8 (SAMP8) model. The C. kawachiensis treatment inhibited microglial activation in the hippocampus, the hyper-phosphorylation of tau at 231 of threonine in hippocampal neurons, and ameliorated the suppression of neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. These results suggest that the dried peel powder of C. kawachiensis exert anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects.  相似文献

We previously reported that the dried peel powder of Citrus kawachiensis exerted anti-inflammatory effects in the brain in several animal models. Hyperglycemia induces inflammation and oxidative stress and causes massive damage in the brain; therefore, we herein examined the anti-inflammatory and other effects of the dried peel powder of C. kawachiensis in the streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemia mice model and in the type 2 diabetic db/db mice model. The C. kawachiensis administration inhibited microglial activation in the hippocampus in the streptozotocin-injected mice. Moreover, The C. kawachiensis treatment inhibited astroglial activation in the hippocampus and the hyperphosphorylation of tau at 231 of threonine and 396 of serine in hippocampal neurons, and also relieved the suppression of neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus in the db/db mice. It was suggested that the dried peel powder of C. kawachiensis exerts anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects in the brain.  相似文献

Hemp (Cannabis sativa) produces phloem fibres, which are formed in bundles towards the periphery of the stem. This study investigated one aspect of the retting process, the dissociation of these fibres from the core of the stem, which is influenced by the action of micro-organisms. Peel tests were used to investigate the work required to remove a tissue peel, rich in fibres, from the core of the stem. Two separate experiments studied (1) the effects of tissue dehydration as stems were dried out in the oven; and (2) the progress of retting in stems that were dew-retted in the field. A comparison between two different types of peel tests, where the stems were clamped either vertically or horizontally in the jaws of a tensile testing machine and the load applied vertically, showed that the work required to peel stems in the vertical position was over 20% greater than that for the horizontal position. Freshly harvested stems were dehydrated in an oven at 40°C over a period of 42 h and as the moisture content decreased there was a significant increase in the work to peel. In contrast, stems that had been dew-retted in the field showed a significant decrease in work to peel. When the moisture content of stems dried in the oven decreased below 12%, the work to peel rapidly decreased. As the plant tissues dehydrated their fracture characteristics changed and this was reflected in the increase in the work to peel seen in the oven-dried samples. This, however, was not evident in the field-retted samples, in which there was a decrease in work to peel. The field-retted samples were exposed to the activity of micro-organisms for a prolonged period of time compared with the oven-dried samples; this increased the potential degradation caused by microbial enzymes. Thus, the reduced work to peel in dew-retted stems is thought to be due to the colonisation of the stem by micro-organisms and the subsequent retting process. The dramatic decrease in work to peel at low moisture content in the oven-dried stems is thought to result from mechanical changes leading to brittle fracture characteristics. This study indicates that peel tests can be used to objectively monitor the reduction in work to peel for dew-retted stems and relate this reduction to the progress of retting. Thus, peel tests may be used to monitor the effects of different factors on the process of retting in hemp.  相似文献

Summary As the hydrolysis of mandarin orange peel with macerating enzyme (40°C, 24 h) produced 0.59 g g–1 reducing sugar per dry peel compared to 0.36 by acid-hydrolysis (15 min at 120°C with 0.8 N H2SO4), the production of single cell protein (SCP) from orange peel was studied mostly using enzymatically hydrolyzed orange peel. When the enzymatically hydrolyzed peel media were used, the utilization efficiency of reducing sugars (%) and the growth yield from reducing sugars (g g–1) were: 63 and 0.51 for Saccharomyces cerevisiae; 56 and 0.48 for Candida utilis; 74 and 0.69 for Debaryomyces hansenii and 64 and 0.70 for Rhodotorula glutinis. SCP production from orange peel by D. hansenii and R. glutinis were further studied. Batch cultures for 24 h at 30°C using 100 g dried orange peel produced 45 g of dried cultivated peel (protein content, 33%) with D. hansenii and 34 g (protein content, 50%) with R. glutinis, and 38 g (protein content, 44%) with a mixture of both yeasts.  相似文献

Extract from yuzu fruit peel (Citrus junos Sieb. ex Tanaka) strongly suppressed the germination of lettuce seeds while that from the peel of other citrus fruits such as navel orange (C. sinensis) and lemon (C. limon Burm. f.) had very little or no effect. The highest inhibitory activity was located in the peel followed by the segment but no significant activity was found in the seed extract of yuzu fruit. The effect of yuzu peel extract was tested on a variety of major crops including 38 crop species. Germination of seeds of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), celery (Apium graveolens L. var. dulce) and watercress (Nasturtium officinale R. Br.) was completely blocked by 27.8 mg dry peel equivalent ml–1 of yuzu peel extract, while that of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) and pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata [Duch. ex Lam.] Duch. ex Poir.) seeds was not affected at this concentration, showing a broad variation in the sensitivity of crop seeds to the extract. The effectiveness of yuzu peel was also tested on some harmful weeds. The extract inhibited the elongation of both radicle and hypocotyl in summer weed quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) grown on agar plates. Yuzu peel powder added to the soil was also effective in suppressing the growth of C. quinoa, Sonchus oleraceus L. and Digitaria ciliaris, while it had little effect on the spring weed Alopecurus aequalis Sobol. A strong growth inhibitory activity of yuzu peel was found in the aqueous phase after solvent extraction and most of the activity was recovered in the neutral fraction that passed through cation and anion exchange resins.  相似文献

A study was conducted to examine the protectability of nine Nigerian medicinal plants against Callosobruchus maculatus at an ambient temperature of 28?±?2?°C and relative humidity of 70?±?5%. The nine plants used were dried and milled into fine powder before application. Among the nine plant powders used, Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides effected highest mortality rate of 73.40 and 100% at 5% (wt/wt) concentration within two and three days of application, respectively. The effect of this plant at this level of concentration was significantly (p?<?0.05) different from other plants. However, all the plant powders effected high mortality rate as they all achieved more than 50% beetle mortality within four days of application at 20% (wt/wt) concentration. Only the powder of Z. zanthoxyloides at 10% (wt/wt) concentration was able to achieve 0% adult emergence, 0% seed damage and 100% damage reduction. Moreover, powder of Z. zanthoxyloides, Aristolochia ringens and Colocasia esculenta at 20% (wt/wt) was also able to prevent the emergence of adult C. maculatus, prevent seed damage and achieve 100% damage reduction. All the powders had low weevil perforation index when compared to the control which had above 50% weevil perforation index. At all levels of concentration, the effect of the powders was significantly (p?<?0.05) different from the control. However, Z. xanthoxyloides appeared to be the most effective; therefore, the effective utilisation of Z. xanthoxyloides as a botanical pesticide could minimise the use of hazardous chemicals in stored product pest control since it is of a botanical source.  相似文献

The influence of dried cell powder and culture filtrates of endophytic fungi on production of inophyllum in cell suspension cultures of leaf- and stem-derived callus of Calophyllum inophyllum was investigated. Two fungi, Nigrospora sphaerica and Phoma spp., endophytic to C. inophyllum, were isolated from leaf tissues, and were identified by both 18S rRNA gene amplification and sequencing. Elicitation of suspension cultures of both callus types of C. inophyllum with dried cell powder and culture filtrates of both fungi consistently elicited production of inophyllum A, B, C, and P. In comparison to stem-derived callus, suspension cultures of leaf-derived callus enhanced production of most inophyllum. Of the four inophyllum studied, the highest production of inophyllum A, C, and P was achieved in elicited suspension cultures of leaf-derived callus. Suspension cultures of stem-derived callus enhanced production only of inophyllum B. When suspension cultures of leaf-derived callus were elicited with 40 mg dried cell powder of Phoma spp., a level of 751-fold (6.84 mg/100 g elicited biomass) of inophyllum A was produced, compared to control. Whereas, a level of 414-fold (6.22 mg/100 g elicited biomass) of inophyllum B was produced when suspension cultures of stem-derived callus were elicited with 20 mg dried cell powder of N. sphaerica. When compared to control, a 10% culture filtrate of N. sphaerica in suspension cultures of leaf-derived callus elicited inophyllum C and P production by 928-fold (7.43 mg/100 g elicited biomass) and 750-fold (1.5 mg/100 g elicited biomass), respectively.  相似文献

Mango peel is one of the major wastes from fruit processing industries, which poses considerable disposal problems and ultimately leads to environmental pollution. The objective of the current research was to determine the significant parameters on the production of polygalacturonase from mango peel which is a major industrial waste. Solid state culture conditions for polygalacturonase production by Fusarium moniliforme from dried mango peel powder were optimized by Taguchi’s L-18 orthogonal array experimental design methodology. Eight fungal metabolic influencing variables, viz. temperature, mango peel, inoculum, peptone, ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3), magnesium sulphate (MgSO4), zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) and potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4) were selected to optimize polygalacturonase production. The optimized parameters composed of temperature (30°C), mango peel (6.5%, g, w/v), inoculum (8%, ml, v/v), peptone (1%, g, w/v), NH4NO3 (0.60%, g, w/v), MgSO4 (0.05%, g, w/v), ZnSO4 (0.06%, g, w/v) and KH2PO4 (0.4%, g, w/v). Based on the influence of interaction of fermentation components of fermentation, these could be classified as the least significant and the most significant at individual and interaction levels. The temperature, inoculum level, mango peel substrate and KH2PO4 showed maximum production impact at optimized conditions. From the optimized conditions the polygalacturonase activity was maximized to 43.2 U g−1.  相似文献

Summary The effects of collagenous substrata, fibronectin, and fetal bovine serum on the adhesion, proliferation, and adipogenesis of rat stromal-vascular cells are reported. There was no effect on initial stromal-vascular cell-attachment by fetal bovine serum or fibronectin. The number of cells attached to a hydrated collagen-gel was almost twice (P<0.04) the number attached to dried collagen-gel or dried denatured collagen-gel. Total number of cells after 5 days in culture was similar among the collagenous substrata and among the treatments with or without fibronectin in the growth media. Total number of cells increased significantly (P<0.02) with 10% FBS. Adipocytic formation was inhibited by hydrated collagen-gel (P<0.02) compared to dried collagen-gel or dried, denatured collagenous substrata. An interaction occurred between dried, denatured gel and fetal bovine serum so that total formation of adipocytes increased by increasing the level of fetal bovine serum (P<0.07). Adipocytic formation was inhibited by hydrated collagen-gel at all levels of fetal bovine serum. The percentage of cells that converted to adipocytes was significantly lower (P<0.01) on hydrated collagen-gel compared to dried, denatured or dried collagen-gel. Percentage of conversion was not significantly different among levels of fetal bovine serum, although this percentage increased as fetal bovine serum level increased. Adipocytic conversion was not different between fibronectin-treated or untreated cells. Morphology of stromal vascular cells was similar on dried collagen and dried, denatured collagen-gel, but tended to remain bipolar on hydrated collagen-gel. These studies indicate that fetal bovine serum in combination with the extracellular matrix (dried, denatured collagen) increased the differentiation of rat stromal-vascular cells into adipocytes, and that hydrated collagen inhibited differentiation.  相似文献

Tolerance of photosystem 2 (PS2) to high temperature in apple (Malus domestica Borkh. cv. Cortland) leaves and peel was investigated by chlorophyll a fluorescence (OJIP) transient after exposure to 25 (control), 40, 42, 44, and 46 °C in the dark for 30 min. The positive L-step was more pronounced in a peel than in leaves when exposed to 44 °C. Heat-induced K-step became less pronounced in leaves than in peel when exposed to 42 °C or higher temperature. Leaves had negative L-and K-steps relative to the peel. The decrease of oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) by heat stress was higher in the peel than in the leaves. OJIP transient from the 46 °C treated peel could not reach the maximum fluorescence (Fm). The striking thermoeffect was the big decrease in the relative variable fluorescence at 30 ms (VI), especially in the leaves. Compared with the peel, the leaves had less decreased maximum PS2 quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm), photochemical rate constant (KP), Fm and performance index (PI) on absorption basis (PIabs) and less increased minimum fluorescence (F0) and non-photochemical rate constant (KN), but more increased reduction of end acceptors at PS1 electron acceptor side per cross section (RE0/CS0) and per reaction center (RE0/RC0), quantum yield of electron transport from QA to the end acceptors (ϕ R0) and total PI (PIabs, total) when exposed to 44 °C. In conclusion, PS2 is more thermally labile than PS1. The reduction of PS2 activity by heat stress primarily results from an inactivation of OEC. PS2 was more tolerant to high temperature in the leaves than in the peel.  相似文献

Incorporation of dried leaves of Azadirachta indica, Cannabis sativa, Eucalyptus tereticornis and Ricinus communis at 3 kg per 100 kg of dry wheat straw prior to composting had several effects. When compared with controls, treated composts exhibited a higher temperature during composting, a higher nitrogen content and a neutral pH. The treatments resulted in enhanced populations of thermophilic fungi and mesophilic antibiotic-producing fungi, but reduced numbers of mesophilic competitor/pathogenic moulds. Populations of the mycophagous nematode, Aphelenchoides composticola were reduced below economic injury level in dried leaf treated composts. Compost obtained from C. sativa and R. communis treatments were more rapidly colonised by the mushroom mycelium (Agaricus bisporus) than that from any other treatment. When compared with compost treated with carbofuran R. communis, C. sativa and A. indica treatments significantly increased mushroom yield by 19.4, 8.1 and 6.5% and by 108.5, 88.7 and 85.9% when compared with the control. Yield from the E. tereticornis treatment was also higher than the control but lower than that of the nematicide treatment.  相似文献

N-(p-Coumaroyl)serotonin (C) and N-feruroylserotonin (F) with antioxidative activity are present in safflower oil. The protective effects of C and F were investigated in perfused guinea-pig Langendorff hearts subjected to ischemia and reperfusion. Changes in cellular levels of high phosphorous energy, NO and Ca2+ in the heart together with simultaneous recordings of left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP) were monitored by an nitric oxide (NO) electrode, fluorometry and 31P-NMR. The rate of recovery of LVDP from ischemia by reperfusion was 30.8% in the control, while in the presence of C or F a gradual increase to 63.2 or 61.0% was observed. Changes of transient NO signals (TNO) released from heart tissue in one contraction (LVDP) were observed to be upside-down with respect to transient fura-2-Ca2+ signals (TCa) and transient O2 signals detected with a pO2 electrode. At the final stage of ischemia, the intracellular concentration of Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) and the release of NO increased with no twitching and remained at a high steady level. The addition of C increased the NO level at the end of ischemia compared with the control, but [Ca2+]i during ischemia decreased. On reperfusion, the increased diastolic level of TCa and TNO returned rapidly to the control level with the recovery of LVDP. By in vitro EPR, C and F were found to directly quench the activity of active radicals. Therefore, it is concluded that the antioxidant effects of two derivatives isolated from safflower play an important role in ischemia-reperfusion hearts in close relation with NO.  相似文献

Abstract Chemical‐treated soil or physical barriers have been the most commonly used approach for termite management. We hypothesized that a barrier of soil incorporated with oven‐dried Lantana camara L. tissues could prevent termite infestation. We first examined the antitermitic effects of the dried tissues from two cultivars (‘Mozelle’ and ‘New Gold’) on the subterranean termite, Reticulitermes virginicus (Banks) (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae). Results show that all of the tissues of Mozelle had greater antitermic activity than corresponding tissues of New Gold, and leaves had greater termiticidal effects than flowers and stems. When termites were exposed to the test materials in a no‐choice bioassay, the 24‐day test resulted in a significant reduction of survival (52.5%–88.6%), running speed (18.2%–37.3%), live weight (21.8%–53.5%) and body water content (33.2%–56.2%) compared to the control. The consumption of leaves and flowers was exiguous. When used as 25% tissue mulch‐barrier, the oven‐dried lantana tissues decreased termite tunneling and wood consumption and increased termite mortality. The decreased survival, vigor, and low consumption indicate a toxic and anti‐feeding property of the materials tested. The results therefore support our hypothesis that the dried lantana tissues possess antitermitic activities.  相似文献

Aqueous methanol extracts of Citrus junos, C. unshiu and C. hassaku fruit peel inhibited the growth of the roots and hypocotyls of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seedlings. Significant reductions in the root and hypocotyl growth were observed as the extract concentration increased in all bioassays. The inhibitory activity of C. junos extract on the growth of lettuce roots and hypocotyls was about 13- and 24-fold greater than that of C. unshiu and C. hassaku extracts, respectively. The concentration of abscisic acid--D-glucopyranosyl ester (ABA-GE) in fruit peel of C. junos, C. unshiu and C. hassaku was determined since ABA-GE had been found to be a possible cause of the growth inhibitory effect of C. junos. The concentration was 132, 10.6 and 5.0 µg g–1 dry weight in C. junos, C. unshiu and C. hassaku fruit peel, respectively. Thus, there was a good correlation between ABA-GE concentrations in C. junos, C. unshiu and C. hassaku fruit peel and the inhibitory activities of their aqueous extracts, which suggests that ABA-GE may be involved in the growth inhibitory effect of C. junos, C. unshiu and C. hassaku fruit peel.  相似文献

A distributional survey of the large branchiopod crustaceans of the rice paddies of Shiga Prefecture, Japan, was conducted by the Lake Biwa Museum in May and June of 1999 and 2000. Collecting kits were issued to over 100 lay Field Reporters, who returned all samples, usually dried, to the museum for processing. Their 242 species-lots were augmented by 146 from Grygier, 46 from Ida, and 41 from other museum staff. Apart from this survey, 50 additional records in 1997–2000 were also taken into account. Seven species were recorded in the prefecture's southern half: Branchinella kugenumaensis (Ishikawa), Caenestheriella gifuensis (Ishikawa), and Lynceus biformis (Ishikawa) with wide distributions; Triops longicaudatus (LeConte) and Leptestheria kawachiensis Uéno limited to paddy areas around the south end of Lake Biwa; and Eulimnadia sp. mostly in remnant paddy areas threatened with urban development in Otsu city, with Triops granarius (Lucas) at a single such site in Otsu. In the prefecture's northern half, only B. kugenumaensis and C. gifuensis occurred to a limited degree. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed. Data pertaining to species co-occurrence and occurrence relative to the ongoing program of paddy field consolidation in the prefecture are presented and discussed. Success of the survey was due to the use of Field Reporters, who were able to provide a high degree of coverage of the study area, as well as the clearly defined habitat, the low number and easy recognizability of species, and the collection of voucher material from all sites. Conservation-related results included the listing of Eulimnadia sp. as a `rare' species by Shiga Prefecture.  相似文献

Aqueousmethanol extracts of Cit rus junos, C. unshiu and C. sudachi fruit peel in hib ited the growth of the roots and hypocotyls of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), cress (Lepidiumsativum L.) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seedlings. Signifi cantreductions in the root and hypocotyl growth were observed as the extract concentration in creased in all bioassays. The in hibitory activity of C. junos ex tract on the growth of test plants was 3.3-to 17.9-fold and 3.6- to 20.6-fold greater than that of C. unshiu and C. sudachi extracts, respectively. Theconcent rationin C. junos was 3.5- and 4.9-fold greater than that in C. unshiu and C. sudachi, re spectively. Thus, there was a good correlation-between abscisic acid-b-D-glucopyranosylester (ABA-GE) concentrationsin C. junos, C. unshiu and C. sudachi fruit peel and theinhibito ryactivities of the irextracts. The concentration of ABA-GE in C. junos fruit peel was in creased with fruit maturityasgrowthinhibit oryactivity of C. junos fruit peel was reported to be in creased with fruit maturity, in dicating that the concentrations of ABA-GEin C. junos fruit peel was correlated withgrowthinhibit oryactivity of C. junos fruit peel in time course of fruit maturation. These findings suggest that ABA-GE may be involved in the growth inhibitory effect of C. junos, C. unshiu and C. sudachi fruit peel.  相似文献

Casearia sylvestris is an endemic tree of the Latin America that the essential oil (EO) has anti-inflammatory and gastroprotective actions. This study evaluates the chemical composition of the EO from the volatile fractions of in natura, fresh, and dried C. sylvestris var. sylvestris and var. lingua leaves. For both varieties, the dried leaves presented higher EO yield as compared to fresh leaves. The major EO chemical components were (E)-caryophyllene, α-humulene, germacrene D, bicyclogermacrene, spathulenol, caryophyllene oxide, and humulene epoxide II. In both varieties, the content of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons decreased and oxygenated sesquiterpenes increased on going from in natura to fresh and dried leaves, which indicated that leaf drying and hydrodistillation modified the volatile composition. The results also suggested that bicyclogermacrene and (E)-caryophyllene were oxidized during processing, to generate spathulenol and caryophyllene oxide, respectively. C. sylvestris varieties and in natura, fresh, and dried leaves differed in terms of the chemical composition of volatiles, which could affect the EO biological activities.  相似文献

A method to produce dried granules of Cryptococcus flavescens (formerly Cryptococcus nodaensis) OH 182.9 was developed and the granules evaluated for storage stability. Small spherical granules were produced and dried using a fluidized-bed dryer. A drying and survival curve was produced for the process of fluidized-bed drying at 30°C. The granules were dried to different moisture contents (4, 7, 9 and 12%) and evaluated for storage stability at 4°C for up to a year. These different moisture contents granules had the following respective water activities (0.22, 0.38, 0.47 and 0.57 a w). The results show the storage stability varied significantly across this moisture content range. The 9% moisture content sample had the best short-term stability (up to 4 months), while 4% moisture content had the best long-term survival (1 year). A desorption isotherm of C. flavescens was determined and modeled. The results of the storage stability and drying studies are interpreted in context of the desorption isotherm.  相似文献
