We compared the influence of pollination intensity (PI) on fruit set and seed number per pod in two cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) clones, IFC5 (Forastero Lower-Amazon Amelonado), which is self-compatible and known to produce a high number of seeds per pod under open pollination, and SCA6 (Forastero Upper-Amazon), which is self-incompatible and known to produce a low number of seeds per pod under open pollination. With both clones, PI had a positive effect on fruit set, with the maximum rate requiring more than 150 pollen grains per pod. One-half of the maximum rate of fruit set was reached with 39 pollen grains per pod for SCA6, and 78 for IFC5. With SCA6, a significant positive effect of PI on seed number per pod was also observed, with maximum seed number requiring more than 200 pollen grains per pod. In contrast, seed numbers with IFC5 were approximately equal over the PI range 100–800 pollen grains per pod. Patterns of seed number per pod were compared after: (1) open insect pollination, (2) low-intensity hand pollination and (3) high-intensity hand pollination. The patterns obtained with IFC5 under open pollination showed a peak of 40–50 seeds per pod, whereas the distribution patterns were more even with SCA6. The pattern of seed number under open pollination was similar to that obtained with high-intensity hand pollination for IFC5, and with low-intensity hand pollination for SCA6. We concluded that the high number of seeds per pod observed with IFC5 under natural insect pollination may be explained by a high number of compatible self-pollen grains on the stigma and by a severe drop of low-pollinated flowers eliminating potential lowfilled fruits. With SCA6, however, the number of compatible pollen grains deposited on the stigma was probably low under open pollination, and the flowers required lower pollen quantities to set fruit, which resulted in a high frequency of low seed numbers per fruit. This difference in the capacity to set low-seeded fruits might be considered as an adaptive trait related to the mode of reproduction. 相似文献

It has been proposed that in non-rewarding animal-pollinated plants the pollination intensity should decrease with increasing population size and should increase with increasing local abundance of reward-producing plants. To test these hypotheses, we examined how population size, local abundance of Salix caprea, and tree cover were related to pollen removal and fruit production in 16 populations of the deceptive, early-flowering and bumblebee-pollinated orchid Calypso bulbosa in northern Sweden in 3 consecutive years. To determine whether fruit production was limited by pollinator visitation, supplemental hand-pollinations were performed in three populations in 3 years. Finally, to examine whether increased fruit production was associated with a reduction in future flower production, vegetative growth or survival, supplemental hand-pollination was repeated for 5 years in one population. The levels of pollen export, pollen deposition, and fruit set of C. bulbosa varied considerably among years and among populations. The proportion of plants exporting pollen was negatively related to population size, and positively related to density of S. caprea and to tree cover in 1 of the 3 years. In the other 2 years, no significant relationship was detected between proportion of plants exporting pollen and the latter three variables. In no year was there a significant relationship between fruit set and population size, density of S. caprea and tree cover. There was substantial among-year variation in the extent to which fruit production was limited by insufficient pollen deposition and in the amount of weather-induced damage to flowers and developing fruits. Fruit set was consistently higher in hand-pollinated than in open-pollinated plants, but this difference was statistically significant in only one of 3 years. Supplemental hand-pollination in 5 consecutive years increased cumulative fruit production 1.8 times, but did not affect flower production, plant size, or survival. Tree cover was negatively correlated with the incidence of frost damage in 1 year. The results indicate that life-time seed production may be pollen limited in C. bulbosa, and that variation in population size and local abundance of the early-flowering, nectar-producing S. caprea can only partly explain the extensive variation in pollinator visitation among populations of this species. 相似文献

Synopsis Male beaugregory damselfish,Stegastes leucostictus, were provided with three types of artificial breeding structures to determine if they change habitats based on past or future reproductive payoffs. All three site types quickly lured males away from their natural sites. In comparison to those living on natural sites, those using artificial sites were less likely to move to different areas and had a higher reproductive success. When given no choice, male reproductive success was correlated to structural type. A second experiment provided males with an additional structure after using the intermediate quality type for 2 months. Males would often initially use both sites but would eventually shift their spawning activity to the new site if it was of the same quality or better than the old one. However, males would not move if the new site was of inferior quality. When given a new site identical to the initial one, approximately half of the males shifted to the new site. There was no evidence that reproductive performance influenced a male's decision to use a new site. 相似文献

Within population variation in plant density can affect reproductive success and breeding systems. We examined such effects
in Listera cordata R. Br., a north temperate terrestrial orchid, in a subalpine population in Colorado, USA. Hand pollinations showed that L. cordata was self-compatible as all pollinations produced fruits. Cross-pollinations differed significantly from self-pollinations,
and had a higher number of seeds per capsule and higher % of fertilized ovules. Together they could compensate for the transmission
advantage of self-pollinations. Average number of flowers per inflorescence was 4.2–4.4 and average fruit set was 20.7–23.7%.
By establishing 36 plots with varying plant densities (1, 4, 8 and 16) and emasculating all flowers in target plants of a
set of 20 plots, we estimated density effects on fruit and seed production. Plant density had no effect on the amount of reproduction
except in reduced seed production of highly dispersed plants. Our results suggest that inbreeding depression may be an important
selective factor in L. cordata. Further studies are needed to define its role in the evolution of mating systems in this species.

Disa sankeyi Rolfe was found to be pollinated almost exclusively by Hemipepsis wasps (Pompilidae) at sites across its range in the Drakensberg mountains of South Africa. Wasps of both sexes appear to locate the cryptic yellow-green flowers primarily by using scent cues, as they show a classic zigzag flight pattern when approaching inflorescences. The sweet-spicy fragrance emitted by the flowers is strong enough to be discernable by a human from several metres away and consists of a blend of at least 65 volatile compounds, with (E)- cinnamic aldehyde and eugenol as the major constituents. On settling, wasps lick the exposed droplet of nectar that is secreted from the mouth of the reduced floral spur on each flower. Pollinaria become attached to the front feet of the wasps as they grasp flowers adjacent to those on which they are feeding. Pollen transfer to stigmas similarly takes place on flowers adjacent to those that are used as a nectar source. Almost 100% of flowers in the study populations were found to have been pollinated. Specialized pollination by pompilid wasps appears to be a rare phenomenon that has been reported only in southern African plant species. It appears to be associated with cryptic green-yellow flowers and highly accessible nectar. Behavioural assays are required to determine whether the basis of the specialization in this pollination system lies in a particular chemical composition of the floral fragrance. 相似文献

Pollination modes ecology of a total of 164 plant species was evaluated according to habitats and plant life forms in the Venezuelan Central Plain. Frequency distribution of nine pollination modes showed that, at the community level bee pollination (38.6%) was dominant. Butterfly (13.9%), fly (12.7%), and wasp (10.8%) pollination were the second most frequent. Moth (6.2%) and wind (10.4%) pollination occurred with similar frequency, and the least common were bird (3.1%), beetle (2.3%) and bat (1.9%) pollination. There was a significant interaction effect indicating that pollination mode was affected by the type of habitat. Bee pollination was the most common pollination mode in all habitats with butterfly, fly and wasp pollination being secondary for forest and forest-savanna transition; and butterfly, wasp, wind and fly pollination being secondary for savanna. Wind, butterfly and fly pollination were found in disturbed areas as secondary pollination modes. Pollination modes were significantly associated and affected by life forms. Bee pollination was dominant in all life forms with wasp, butterfly and fly pollination being the secondary for trees, shrubs, and lianas; and butterfly and wind pollination being the secondary for herbaceous species. The number of pollination modes (richness) among life forms ranged between four and nine for epiphytes and perennial herbs respectively. The highest values of diversity indexes among life forms were found in trees and shrubs. The richness and diversity indices of pollination modes were statistically higher for more structured habitats, forest and forest-savanna transition, than herbaceous habitats, savanna and disturbed areas, which is associated with the highest values of diversity indexes in trees and shrubs. Equitability was higher for forest and disturbed areas than forest-savanna transition and savanna. The results of comparative richness, equitability, diversity indices, and the frequency distribution of pollination modes of 19 samples from tropical and temperate communities indicated that richness of pollination modes may be different between tropical and temperate communities. The proportion of each pollination mode suggests four grouping: (1) rain forests and their strata, (2) grassland savanna, and associated disturbed areas, (3) temperate communities, and (4) the most heterogeneous group, contained mostly neotropical communities, including the four habitats of the Venezuelan Central Plain. The frequency of pollination modes, richness, diversity and equitability of communities, habitats, successional stages, and vegetation strata varies with respect to geography, vegetation structure, and plant species richness. 相似文献

The reproductive biology and pollination mechanisms of Govenia utriculata (Sw.) Lindl. were studied in a mesophytic semideciduous forest at Serra do Japi, south-eastern Brazil. The floral visitors and pollination mechanisms were recorded, and experimental pollinations were carried out to determine the breeding system of this species. Populations of G. utriculata growing at Serra do Japi are exclusively visited and pollinated by two species of hoverflies in the genus Salpingogaster (Diptera: Syrphidae) that are attracted by deceit to the flowers of this orchid species. The lip apex and the column base present small brownish and yellow to orange spots that mimic pollen clusters. Govenia utriculata is self-compatible, but pollinator dependent. Natural fruit set was low (10%), but similar to that of other non-obligatorily autogamous sympatric orchid species that occur at Serra do Japi and of other fly-pollinated orchid species pollinated through deceptive mechanisms. 相似文献

In addition to reducing fitness by consuming reproductive structures, florivores may also reduce plant fitness by altering interactions with pollinators. To date, the effects of florivore activity on the volatile profile of flowers and subsequent attractiveness to pollinators have not been extensively investigated. In this study, we had three specific objectives: to determine the impact of florivory by the parsnip webworm Depressaria pastinacella on the floral volatile profile of the wild parsnip Pastinaca sativa, to ascertain the mechanisms by which florivory changes the volatile profile, and to estimate the consequences of florivory on visitation by pollinators and eventual seed set. An overall indirect effect of webworms on seed set, that is, the effect of infestation on pollination success, was not detected. However, this overall lack of indirect effect masks the heterogeneity among individual plants. For seven of 14 plants examined, pollination success was altered by webworms, and in four of these plants the alteration in pollination success was consistent with webworm-altered visitation. Webworms significantly altered floral fragrance, in particular causing disproportionate increases in the emissions of octyl esters. Additionally, volatiles from webworm frass, which contains large amounts of the octyl ester metabolite n-octanol, may alter the floral fragrance in ways that change attractiveness of flowers to pollinators. This study suggests that the effects of florivores on plant fitness are not limited to the removal of floral units but may also involve alterations in floral volatile composition, through damage-induced release and detoxification of particular constituents, that affect visitation and pollination success. Anthropogenic linear developments, such as trails and firebreaks, also called soft linear developments (SLD), can influence animal behavior, altering the ecological interactions in which animals are involved. For example, SLD can affect the behavior of pollinators and herbivores, but little is known about the combined effect of these three elements on plant reproduction.We evaluated the combined effect of SLD, insect pollinators and herbivores (ungulates) on three reproductive output variables (fruit set, seed set, and seed mass) of a Mediterranean shrub (Halimium halimifolium). We considered two different habitats (SLD verges vs. adjacent scrublands), two scenarios of herbivory (with and without ungulates), and three scenarios of pollinator activity (without pollinators, with manual pollination and with natural pollination).SLD had contrasting effects on H. halimifolium reproduction. In the absence of herbivores, overall fruit set was lower in the verges of SLD than in adjacent scrublands, probably due to lower flower pollination rates. Where herbivores were present, overall fruit set was similar between habitats, because ungulate browsing was lower in SLD verges than in adjacent scrublands. The quantity and weight of seeds per fruit was similar in both habitats, probably because all fertilized flowers received similar amounts of pollen.SLD can alter the interaction among pollinators, herbivores and plants, leading to changes in the reproductive performance of the latter. These changes can have strong negative impacts on endangered plants that rely on fruit and seed production to persist. 由于黑果枸杞(Lycium ruthenicum)果实具有重要的保健价值,近年来倍受关注,但其野生资源正遭受着前所未有的采伐压力。目前关于影响黑果枸杞果实产量的有性生殖过程研究较少,本实验对新疆库尔勒地区6个不同生境的野生黑果枸杞居群开展了繁殖生态学观察,并对各居群的访花频率、访花昆虫种类、柱头花粉落置、胚珠数、座果率、结实率和单株果实产量等指标进行了比较分析。结果表明,访花频率与结实率、座果率具有显著正相关关系,说明传粉者是限制黑果枸杞有性生殖的关键因素之一;传粉者种类越丰富的居群其有性生殖产出越高,揭示了传粉昆虫的多样性和丰富度是影响黑果枸杞繁殖成功的重要限制因子。此外,和静县华侨农场和焉耆县霍拉山河沟的黑果枸杞居群生殖产出明显与其传粉成功率相偏离,进一步分析表明,风沙侵蚀和人为采伐对植株的破坏是影响这两个居群果实产量的重要原因。本研究结果对于野生黑果枸杞居群的保护及其人工规模栽培提供了重要的参考依据。 相似文献

In this study we investigate the composition of the potential honeyeater pollinator community, patterns of honeyeater visitation,
pollination and the mating system in a range of population fragments for the bird-pollinated mixed mating system shrub Calothamnus quadrifidus R.Br. Specifically, we aimed to answer the following questions. For smaller and more isolated population fragments are honeyeater
species lost from the pollinator community, patterns of visitation different, levels of pollination lower and rates of selfing,
biparental inbreeding and correlated paternity higher. The composition of the honeyeater community was similar across population
fragments and there was no relationship between the abundance of birds and population fragment size. Honeyeaters were most
commonly observed visiting numerous inflorescences within single plants in all populations, but as population fragments became
larger movements between plants were more commonly observed. Our observations of honeyeater visitation were generally consistent
with our measurements of pollination and patterns in the mating system across population fragments. We found no significant
relationship between population fragment size and levels of pollination. Mating system studies showed outcrossing rates (t
m) comparable to those found in other bird-pollinated Myrtaceae, and ranged from 0.54 to 0.90 across populations. Outcrossing
rates were not significantly correlated with log population size, but correlations of outcrossed paternity indicate a clear
trend from low correlated paternity in larger populations to significantly higher correlated paternities in smaller populations.
As a consequence mating in small populations will occur between much smaller groups of plants, and this may affect population

Cypripedium macranthos var. rebunense, was preliminarily studied on Rebun Island, Hokkaido, Japan, for conservation of this threatened orchid. The functional longevity of individual flowers varied from 0 to 18 days, a determining factor being the wind conditions at the growing sites. The flower was self-compatible but needed a pollen vector for fruit production. It lacked nectar and adopted a deceptive pollination system. Queens of a bumblebee, Bombus pseudo-baicalensis, were found to be pollinators but their visits were infrequent. Fruit set was 8.3% at one study site but only 1.2% at another, probably due to interference from the many visitors who came to see the flowers. Based on the results, conservation and management of lady's slipper were discussed. The need for less human interference and for preservation of the interactions between lady's slipper and its pollinator or other plant species with floral rewards is stressed. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although numerous angraecoid orchids in Madagascar display typical sphingophilous syndrome (i.e. white, nectariferous, long-spurred flowers, producing a strong scent at the crepuscule that is attractive to moths), three species of Angraecum in Reunion, belonging to the endemic section Hadrangis, have atypical unscented and short-spurred flowers. The aim of the study was to investigate the implication of plant-pollinator interaction on the evolution of floral morphology of these peculiar island floral forms. METHODS: The flower morphology of A. striatum (one of the three section Hadrangis species) was investigated by performing a set of floral measures, and the reproductive biology was investigated by a set of hand pollination experiments. Natural pollinators were observed by means of a digital video camera. Pollinator efficiency (pollen removal and deposition) and reproductive success (fruit set) were quantified once a week in natural field conditions during the 2005 flowering season (i.e. from January to March). KEY RESULTS: The orchid is self-compatible but requires a pollinator to achieve fruit set. Only one pollinator was observed, the endemic white-eye Zosterops borbonicus (Zosteropidae). These birds perched on inflorescences, and probed most fresh-looking flowers on each plant for nectar. Nectar was both abundant (averaging 7.7 microL) and dilute (averaging 9.7 % sugar in sucrose equivalents). Birds were mostly active between 0830 and 0930 h. Visits to plants were extremely short, lasting from 9 to 27 s. At the study site, 60.9 % of flowers had pollen removed, and 46.4 % had pollinia deposited on stigmas. The proportion of flowers that initiated a fruit averaged 20.6 % in natural conditions. CONCLUSIONS: For the first time, a bird-pollinated orchid is described from a sub-tribe that is mainly specialized for moth pollination. Foraging organisms (like bumble bees) move between resource points (like flowers) whose natural distributions vary enormously:
from hyperdispersed to random to clumped. These differences in habitat structure may significantly influence the fitness of
both plant and pollinator. To examine the effect of habitat structure on pollinator movement and fitness, we observed captive
worker bumble bees collecting nectar from artificial flowers containing equal volumes of reward and arranged in two spatial
configurations: a hexagonal array with constant distances between flowers (“constant”), and an “exploded hexagonal” array,
with variable distances between flowers (“variable”). The mean nearest-neighbour distance was the same in both arrays, as
was the general hexagonal appearance. The experiment therefore compares how resource dispersion, independent of nearest-neighbour
distance, influences bee behaviour. Bees in the variable array showed decreased directionality, higher revisitation frequencies,
and greater inter-flower flight distances than shown in the constant array. As a consequence, bees in the variable array had
a 19% lower gross rate of nectar collection. Our results suggest that wild-foraging bees should prefer regularly spaced flowers
(when all else, including mean nearest-neighbour distance, is equal), and that plants can decrease self-pollination by regular
spacing between flowers, inflorescences, or individuals.

The lifespan of an individual flower is often affected by pollination success. Species differ regarding whether male function (pollen removal), female function (pollen deposition), or both trigger floral senescence. We studied senescence in the singleflowered, deceptive orchid Calypso bulbosa by manipulating the degree of male and female reproductive success. We found that deposition of any amount of pollen resulted in dramatic changes in shape and color within 4 d, whereas unmanipulated flowers and those that had had pollinia removed remained unchanged for 8-11 d after treatment. Selection may favor the reproductive function that is less easily satisfied as the trigger for senescence, because a flower that senesces after accomplishment of this function is likely to have already succeeded at the more easily satisfied one. Deceptive (i.e., rewardless) flowers are more likely to satisfy male than female function since the latter requires that a pollinator be fooled twice, first to pick up pollen and second to deposit it. A survey of naturally pollinated Calypso showed that male function, pollinium removal, was more likely to occur than female function, deposition (95% vs. 66% of visited flowers); thus floral senescence in Calypso is triggered by achievement of the function less likely to succeed. Studies of senescence triggers in species in which female function is more likely to be achieved than male are necessary to further test this hypothesis. 相似文献

Summary The pollination biology of a group of European orchids (Dactylorhiza, Ophrys, Orchis, Platanthera, Goodyera, andSerapias species) are investigated, and their anthecological characteristics considered in relation to natural levels of reproductive success. Pollen ovule (P O) ratios of the European orchids surveyed range from 10 1 (Goodyera repens) to 24 1 (Platanthera chlorantha). Average pollen-load ovule ratios are consistently lower than P O ratios. Naturally occurring pollen loads range from 1 massula to >1 pollinium. Even the smallest pollen load is sufficient to stimulate embryogenesis in experimentally pollinatedDactylorhiza purpurella flowers, although more seeds are set with larger loads. Pollen tubes grow rapidly through the stylar canal and into the top of the ovary within 2 or 3 days of pollination, and grow down either side of the 3 parietal ridges in the ovary. Fertilisation occurs throughout the length of the ovary but its distribution is non-random, especially when pollen loads are limiting, with more seeds being set at the stylar end. All species ofDactylorhiza, Ophrys, andOrchis studied are highly self-compatible. In the absence of pollination,Ophrys andOrchis flowers remain open and fertile for at least 3 weeks. Pollinated flowers remain receptive to further pollinations for at least 8 days. Some fruits can even be obtained on selfing 20-day-old unpollinatedOrchis morio flowers. Excised pollinia retain germinability for a long time, up to 51 days inDactylorhiza purpurella. The arrival of pollen on the stigma hastens floral senescence, but post-pollination changes are relatively slow when compared with those reported for tropical orchid species. It is concluded that characteristics of the pollination biology of European orchids act to maximise reproductive success by (1) prolonging the opportunity for effective pollen deposition both pre- and post-pollination, (2) increasing the likelihood of widespread dispersal, (3) reducing pollen wastage, and (4) increasing seed quality by promoting some pollen competition. As most European orchids are xenogamous and require pollen to arrive on the stigma before seed can be set, reproductive maximisation is of particular adaptive advantage because many of them are infrequently visited by insects so that the probability of successful pollination can be very low.Abbreviations P O
