Material of small sauropsids from the Otter Sandstone Formation of east Devon (Sherwood Sandstone Group; Middle Triassic; Anisian) includes remains that were formerly attributed to a primitive procolophonid. In the light of new specimens, this material is instead found to contain remains of a diapsid and a procolophonine procolophonid. Among these fossils, the medium-sized procolophonine, Kapes bentoni sp. nov., is the first record of this Russian genus in the British Triassic. Coartaredens isaaci gen. et sp. nov. is a small diapsid tentatively assigned to Lepidosauromorpha. The heterodont lower dentition of Coartaredens comprises a row of large, conical posterior teeth and tightly packed, procumbent incisiforms. Two additional specimens are distinguished on the basis of distinctive dentary remains. One of these is of possible procolophonid affinity, while the dentition of the second resembles that of the aberrant Early Triassic parareptilian genus Sclerosaurus .  相似文献

Middle Triassic marine deposits of the Germanic Basin (Muschelkalk) record a significant proliferation of cementing bivalves from different families. Based on previously undescribed, excellently preserved material from the Willebadessen Member (late Anisian, Illyrian) of the Upper Muschelkalk Trochitenkalk Formation of Willebadessen (Germany), we propose the new genus Noetlingiconcha, type species N. speculostreum sp. nov., for strongly plicate prospondylids lacking auricles. The new genus differs from Terquemia and Enantiostreon in being plicate rather than costate, and from Newaagia in the absence of auricles. We demonstrate that N. speculostreum was invariably attached by its right valve, in contrast to an externally similar species from the Lower Muschelkalk Freudenstadt Formation (lower Anisian, Bithynian) that was exclusively cemented by its left valve and thus represents the geologically oldest known oyster species. Previous reports of amphi-pleurothetic cemented bivalve species from the Muschelkalk probably result from lumping together these two externally similar species. The constancy of sinistral attachment in the geologically oldest Ostreidae suggests that left-pleurothetic valve orientation was already established in the ancestry of this family. Palaeontological data are therefore in accordance with genetic and larval shell morphology analyses that identified Pterioidea as the sister taxon of Ostreoidea, because Pterioidea contains several Permian-Triassic genera with an anatomically lower left valve.  相似文献

Three chirothere footprint sites are documented from the Middle Triassic (Anisian) fluvial Otter Sandstone Formation of Sidmouth, Devon, UK. One site, on the foreshore below Peak Hill, has revealed numerous tracks, including a probable manus imprint, which are recorded here. Another site, also beneath Peak Hill, has produced a single probable manus track from a higher horizon. The third site, on the foreshore below Salcombe Hill Cliff, has yielded a small number of pes tracks similar to those from Peak Hill. The footprints at all sites are interpreted as belonging to a large Chirotherium ichnospecies, perhaps C. barthii Kaup. Unusually, the tracks are preserved in mudstone, often in convex epirelief, and are inferred to have been generated subaqueously. The apparent restriction of the footprints to the higher part of the Otter Sandstone Formation supports other evidence, such as a greater abundance of vertebrate skeletal material, subhorizontal rather than vertical rhizocretions, and a greater frequency of lacustrine facies, for a less arid climate and higher water table than lower in the sequence.  相似文献

A combined magnetostratigraphic and biostratigraphic study has been performed on the Maastrichtian Senpohshi Formation in eastern Hokkaido Island, northern Japan, which is an approximately 1300 m thick section mainly composed of hemipelagic mudstone. The identification of magnetic polarity was possible at 51 horizons, whereby four magnetozones were recognized. These magnetozones were correlatable to geomagnetic polarity chrons C31r to C30n, suggesting that the age of the Senpohshi Formation is spanning from middle to upper part of the Maastrichtian (ca. 69–67 Ma).The magnetostratigraphy of the Senpohshi Formation established in this study enables a direct age correlation to the Maastrichtian successions in other regions. Thus, this detailed chronology of the formation contributes to paleontological studies of the Maastrichtian in the North Pacific region. For instance, this magnetostratigraphic age assessment implies the following: (1) the stratigraphic range of the ammonite Pachydiscus flexuosus contains polarity chrons from the lower part of C31r to the lower part of C31n, (2) the first occurrence (FO) of the calcareous nannofossil Nephrolithus frequens in the North Pacific region is correlatable to polarity chron C30n or below, and (3) the FO of the bivalve “Inoceramusawajiensis is located within polarity chrons from C31r to the upper part of C31n. This suggests that the inoceramid extinction event in the North Pacific region might have occurred during polarity chrons from C31r to the upper part of C31n (ca. 70.5–67.8 Ma), which is 2.3–5.0 Myr prior to the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary. The trend of the Maastrichtian faunal turnover in the North Pacific is well consistent with those of other regions, brings a new evidence for understanding the global faunal turnover in the Maastrichtian, just before Cretaceous/Paleogene mass extinction.  相似文献

In the United Kingdom the base of the Aptian transgression is located at the base of the Perna Beds (on the Isle of Wight), although recent work on the magnetostratigraphy has indicated that this dating may be in error. Micropalaeontological work on the Isle of Wight sections has shown that the Perna Beds represent a complex event at the transition from a non‐marine to a marine succession. Foraminiferal and palynological data agree on this transition, although no biostratigraphically diagnostic taxa are present. The base of the Aptian is tentatively moved downwards to the level of the Barnes, High Sandstone Member (Vectis Formation). If correct, this realignment of the boundary would necessitate a revision of many stratigraphic ranges and diversity calculations.  相似文献

Migmaster angularis n. gen. n. sp. (Trichasteropsiidae, Forcipulatacea, Asteroidea) is described from the German Triassic Lower Muschelkalk of Anisian (Pelsonian) age, and new specimens ofTrichasteropsis bielertorum broaden understanding of this species. Phylogenetic events linking the stem groups, known only from Paleozoic rocks, with the crown group, known only from post-Paleozoic rocks, are problematic; the new fossils partially constrain phylogenetic changes associated with emergence of crown-group asteroids.   相似文献

A palynological study is presented of the open-marine Upper Muschelkalk from the SW Germanic Basin, a succession dominated by lagoonal fine-grained carbonates and terrigenous mudstones. The abundance and taxonomic composition of the marine and terrigenous palynomorphs shows a phase of strong terrigenous input, which interrupted the open-marine evolution. This suggests an important regression during latest Anisian (late Illyrian) to early Ladinian (Fassanian) time, which is approximately coeval with a strong regression in other parts of this basin. The documented sea-level lowstand probably has a strong eustatic component, which was overprinted by the regional tectonics in the Germanic Basin.  相似文献

Middle Triassic conodont assemblages in the semi-closed Peri-Tethyan Germanic Basin comprise endemic forms, which evolved within the basin, and immigrants from the Tethys Ocean. Migration from the Tethys proceeded diachronously through three tectonically predisposed pathways (gates) and was controlled by relative sealevel changes recorded in depositional sequences of the Muschelkalk. In the Early and Middle Anisian predominant were the forms that originated in the Eastern Tethys and in southern basins of the Western Tethys. They migrated through the East Carpathian Gate and Silesian-Moravian Gate. In the late Anisian and early Ladinian forms from the Western Tethyan basins prevailed; their migration pathway led through the Western and East Carpathian Gates. The latter gate was active only at the turn of Illyrian and Fassanian. Episodes of migration of the Tethyan forms and dispersal of conodont fauna throughout the German Basin coincide with the transgressive or highstand phases of a particular depositional sequence (as defined by Szulc, 1999). The most significant proportion of the Tethyan species appears to correlate with the maximum flooding surface of the A3 sequence, (Lower Muschelkalk) later they decrease in diversity. In the Upper Muschelkalk the most numerous Tethyan species correspond to the transgressive phase of the L1 sequence. Above the mfs of the L1 sequence only the Germanic forms remain.  相似文献

The Palaeozoic–Mesozoic transition is characterized not only by the most massive Phanerozoic mass extinction at the end of the Permian period, but also its extensive aftermath and a prolonged period of major biotal recovery during the succeeding Middle to Late Triassic. Particularly, Anisian insect species from units of the Lower to Middle Muschelkalk from the Central European Basin are rare. The specimens described here originated from the Anisian Wellenkalk facies (Lower Muschelkalk), Vossenveld Formation of the Winterswijk quarry, The Netherlands, and from the orbicularis Member (lowermost Middle Muschelkalk, Anisian) of Esperstedt near Querfurt (Saxony-Anhalt). Thus, the described insect remains from Winterwijk and Esperstedt expand our knowledge about Middle Triassic terrestrial arthropod communities and their palaeodiversity. A new species of Chauliodites (C. esperstedti sp. nov) is introduced.  相似文献

Summary After the end-Permian crisis and a global ‘reef gap’ in the early Triassic, reefs appeared again during the early Middle Triassic. Records of Anisian reefs are rare in the Tethys as well as in non-Tethyan regions. Most Anisian reefs are known from the western part of the Tethys but there are only very few studies focused on biota, facies types and the paleogeographical situation of these reefs. From the eastern part of the Tethys, Anisian reefs, reefal buildups or potential reef-building organisms have been reported from different regions of southern China. Most of the Anisian reefs known from western and central Europe as well as from southern China seem to be of middle and late Pelsonian age. The study area is situated in the northern Dolomites (South Tyrol, Italy) southeast of Bruneck (Brunico). It comprises the area between Olang (Valdaora) and Prags (Braies). The study is based on detailed investigations of the regional geology, stratigraphy and lithofacies (R. Zühlke, T. Bechst?dt) as well as on a comprehensive inventory of Anisian reef organisms (B. Senowbari-Daryan, E. Flügel). These data are used in the discussion of the controls on the recovery of reefs during the early Middle Triassic. Most late Anisian reef carbonates studied are represented by allochthonous talus reef blocks of cubicmeter size. Small biostromal autochthonous mounds are extremely rare (Piz da Peres). The reef mounds as well as most of the reef blocks occur within the middle to late Pelsonian Recoaro Formation. They were formed on the middle reaches of carbonate ramps in subtidal depths, slightly above the storm wave base with only moderate water energy. Most lithotypes observed in the reef blocks correspond to sponge and/or algal bafflestones. Low-growing sessile organisms (Olangocoelia (sponge, alga?), sphinctozoan sponges, bryozoans, soleno-poracean algae, corals) and encrusting epibionts (sponges, porostromate algae, cyanophycean crusts, foraminifera, worms, microproblematica) created low cm-sized biogenic structures (bioconstructions) which baffled and bound sediment. Organic framework was only of minor importance; it is restricted to theOlangocoelia lithotype. Framework porosity was small in these reef mounds. Submarine carbonate cements, therefore, are only of minor importance s compared with Permian or Ladinian reefs. The relatively high number of lithotypes encountered in the reef blocks indicates a high biofacies diversity. Regarding the relative frequency, the diverse biota consist in descending order ofOlangocoelia, sponges (sphinctozoans, inozoans, siliceous sponges), bryozoans, porostromate algae and worm tubes. The sphinctozoans are characterized by small, mostly incrusting forms. The numerical diversity (species richness) is low compared with late Permian or Ladinian and late Triassic sphinctozoan faunas occurring within reefs. Following the sponges, monospecific bryozoans (Reptonoditrypa cautica Sch?fer & Fois) are the most common organisms in the reef limestones. Porostromate algae were restricted to areas within the bioconstructions not inhabited by sponges. The low-diverse corals had no importance in the construction of an organic framework. Surprisingly, microbial crusts are rare or even lacking in the investigated Anisian bioconstructions. This is in contrast to late Permian and Ladinian as well as Carnian reefs which are characterized by the abundance of specific organic crusts. The same comes true for‘Tubiphytes’ which is a common constituent in Permian, Ladinian and Carnian reef carbonates but is very rare in the Anisian of the Olang Dolomites. Instead of‘Tubiphytes’ different kinds of worm tubes (spirorbid tubes, Mg-calcitic tubes and agglutinated tubes) were of importance as epifaunal elements. Macrobial encrustations consisting of characteristic successions of sponges, bryozoans, algae, worm tubes and microproblematica seem to be of greater quantitative importance than in Ladinian reefs. Destruction of organic skeletons (predominantly of bryozoans) by macroborers (cirripedia?) is a common feature. The Anisian reef organisms are distinctly different from late Permian and from most Ladinian reef-builders. No Permian Lazarus taxa have been found. New taxa: Sphinctozoan sponges—Celyphia? minima n.sp.,Thaumastocoelia dolomitica n. sp.,Deningeria tenuireticulata n. sp.,Deningeria crassireticulata n. sp.,Anisothalamia minima n.g. n.sp., Inozoan sponges-Meandrostia triassica n.sp. Microproblematica-Anisocellula fecunda n.g. n.sp., Porostromate alga-Brandneria dolomitica n.g. n.sp. Most of our data are in agreement with the model described byFois & Gaetani (1984) for the recovery of reef-building communities during the Ansian but the biotic diversity seems to be considerably higher than previously assumed. Anisian deposition and the formation of the reef mounds within the Pelsonian Recoaro Formation of the Dolomites were controlled by the combined effects of synsedimentary tectonics and eustatic changes in sea-level. During several time intervals, especially the early Anisian (northern and western Dolomites: tectonic uplift), the early Pelsonian (eastern Dolomites: drowning) and the late Illyrian (wide parts of the Dolomites: uplift and drowning), the sedimentation was predominantly controlled by regionally different tectonic subsidence rates. The amount of terrigenous clastic input associated with synsedimentary tectonics (tectonic uplift of hinterlands) had a major influence on carbonate deposition and reef development. The re-appearance of reef environments in the Olang Dolomites was controlled by a combination of regional and global factors (paleogeographic situation: development of carbonate ramps; decreasing subsidence of horst blocks; reduced terrigenous input; moderate rise in sea-level).  相似文献

The oldest record of Cyamodus is a skull of Cyamodus tarnowitzensis (Gürich 1884, Zt dt Geol Ges. 36:125–144) from Pelsonian shallow marine deposits. During the middle Illyrian, placodonts disappeared from the Germanic Basin. With renewed upper Illyrian transgression, Cyamodus rostratus (Münster 1839, Über einige ausgezeichnete fossile Fischzähne aus dem Muschelkalk bei Bayreuth. Birner, Bayreuth, p. 14) appeared which was found in terebratulid shell-rich shallow marine deposits. Abundant remains of Cyamodus muensteri (Agassiz 1839), traditionally referred to as Cyamodus hildegardis and here synonymised with C. muensteri, have been reported from the upper Illyrian/middle Fassanian. Skeletal remains of this species are from the Grenzbitumenzone of the Monte San Giorgio lagoons. The youngest species, Cyamodus kuhnschnyderi (Nosotti and Pinna 1993 Nosotti, S and Pinna, G. 1993. Cyamodus kuhnschnyderi n. sp. novelle espèce de Cyamodontidae (Reptilia, Placodontia) du Muschelkalk supérieur allemande. Compt Rend Acad Sci Paris, 317: 847850.  [Google Scholar], Compt Rend Acad Sci Paris. 317:847–850), has been found in the upper Fassanian/lower Longobardian of the southern Germanic Basin or Burgundian Gate when marine facies in the Germanic Basin had nearly disappeared. These successive species provide evidence of monophylogenetic development with a trend towards anterior upper and lower jaw teeth reduction, along with a shortening of the rostrum, over an interval of five million years (243–238 Ma). This evolutionary trend most probably reflects adaptation to specialised feeding on seaplants. The Cyamodus osteoderm carapace was not fused to the vertebral column, and appears to have been primarily a body enhancement that produced neutral or negative buoyancy to facilitate long-period diving.  相似文献

In the Middle Anisian, extensional tectonic movements led to the development of a small isolated carbonate platform in the middle part of the Balaton Highland, Transdanubian Range, Hungary. In the Late Illyrian, a condensed pelagic carbonate succession with phosphorite horizons was formed on the top of the already drowned platform. These strata contain an extraordinarily diverse ammonite fauna. This unit is overlain by radiolarian-rich carbonates, locally with radiolarite interbeds. We suggest that the drowning process and the post-drowning sediment deposition were controlled partly by regional factors, i.e., the onset of opening of the Neotethys Ocean, and partly by local factors such as the bottom topography and related current activity, which may also be connected with the opening of the ocean. The predominance of the radiolarian-rich sediments suggests eutrophic surface water, which may be explained by a monsoon-driven upwelling model. The segmented sea-floor topography together with the high-fertility surface water conditions may have provided favorable habitats for the ammonites, which may have adapted to various ecological conditions, leading to extreme diversification of this group. Since similar Middle to Late Anisian evolution was reported from many other units of the western Neotethys margin, regional factors such as the establishment of an extensional tectonic regime and related marginal basin formation, monsoon-driven upwelling, and related high surface water productivity seem to be of critical importance in controlling the depositional conditions.  相似文献

A new Middle Triassic ichnofauna recovered nearby the town of Tisens (Bozen) in the Adige Valley (Trentino, Northern Italy) is described. A relatively large ichnoassociation, in which various ichnogenera can be recognized, comes from the basal inter-supratidal layers of a mixed carbonate siliciclastic unit of Pelsonian (Middle Anisian) age. Most of the isolated footprints and trackways pertain to lizard-like reptiles referable to Rhyncosauroides and, subordinately, to archosaurian reptiles. In particular, the ichnogenera Rotodactylus, Synaptichnium and Chirotherium have been recognized. Many tracks are at present unidentified; among them a lizard-like morphotype (morphotype A). The site also yelded numerous fossil plant horizons and some scattered vertebrate remains referable to Placodontidae (cf. Placodus gigas). The site shows the continuity in the Pelsonian of the “chirothere ichnofauna” and the dominance of Rhynchosauroides in carbonate, tidal flat environments.  相似文献

The thick red mudstone unit that crops out at Laguna Umayo (Puno department, southern Peru), here referred as LURMU, has yielded in different levels a fossil assemblage with plants and vertebrates (including mammals). On the basis of charophytes, the unit was initially assigned to the Vilquechico Formation (Maastrichtian-Danian), of regional extension, and the dinosaurian structure of egg fragments was interpreted as consistent with that age. Revision of the regional stratigraphy leads to reassignment of this unit to the Lower Muñani Formation (Early Tertiary). Mammals from the LU-3 and Chulpas levels present affinities with forms from the Upper Paleocene of South America (Patagonia, Brazil). A bunodont marsupial, Chulpasia, is evidence for chronologic proximity to a transantarctic interchange with Australia at the end of the Paleocene. Furthermore, magnetostratigraphy of the LURMU reveals a single reverse polarity zone of 300 m thickness. Because of the new stratigraphic and paleomammalogic data, this long reverse polarity zone is likely correlative to Chron 26r (early Late Paleocene) or Chron 24r (latest Paleocene-earliest Eocene), or, less likely, to Chron 29r (latest Cretaceous-earliest Paleocene). The arguments previously invoked in favor of a Cretaceous age (charophytes, dinosaurian eggs) are critically evaluated, and correlation to Chron 24r is favored.  相似文献

In the Julian Alps (Mt. Prisojnik, NW Slovenia) and in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps (Mt. Kri?evnik, N Slovenia), both of which form part of the eastern Southern Alps, several meters of Upper Anisian pelagic red nodular, radiolarian-rich limestone (Loibl Formation) were deposited on the drowned platform carbonates of the Contrin Formation. The time of the platform drowning is dated with radiolarians and conodonts to the Illyrian, more precisely to the upper part of the Paraceratites trinodosus Ammonoid Zone. The red limestone is overlain by pyroclastics and volcanics (rhyolites) or carbonate (mega)breccia (Uggowitz Formation). The following unit consists of thin-bedded limestone, grainstone and subordinate marl (Buchenstein Formation) deposited during the final filling of the basin from the adjacent prograding carbonate platform (Schlern Formation) in the Ladinian. Map-scale geometry, neptunian dykes, the onset of volcanism, the presence of (mega)breccia and related paleo-escarpments, the lateral variations in thickness and the wedge-shaped geometry of the lithological units provide evidence of syn-sedimentary block faulting and the formation of small-scale, relatively shallow half-grabens within the previously uniform Slovenian Carbonate Platform. This analysis indicates a clear tectonic control over the development of the Middle Triassic stratigraphy. The described extensional event is well correlated and genetically connected with the syn-rift formation of the neighboring Slovenian Basin and other Southern Alpine basins that formed in connection with the opening of the Meliata-Maliac branch of the Neotethys Ocean.  相似文献

Fluvio-lacustrine post-Miocene deposits of the Bolivian Altiplano have been sampled in 400 m of section in the La Paz and Avo Avo basins in order to provide a magnetostratigraphic scheme for chronostratigraphic interpretations. Stable characteristics components were isolated after stepwise AF or thermal demagnetizations. The directions of cleaned magnetization were compared to the normal and reverse dipole field directions at the site. The plot of the mean directions calculated for each stratigraphic level define successive magnetozones which can be identified on the standard geomagnetic polarity scale with the help of the K/Ar ages obtained on tuff layers. The deposition of the middle and upper part of the La Paz Formation covers the Gauss epoch. The Gauss/Matuyama (2.48 Ma) and the Gilbert/Gauss (3.4 Ma) limits are located in the top and the middle of the formation. The occurrence of the first glacial/interglacial oscillation can be placed in the early Matuyama (ca 2.2 Ma) in agreement with the oxygen isotopic record from the equatorial ocean.

New Late Triassic–earliest Jurassic magneto-biostratigraphic data have been obtained from three overlapping sections in the Southern Alps, Italy (Costa Imagna, Brumano, Italcementi Quarry), composed of ~ 520 m of shallow-marine carbonates outcropping in stratigraphic continuity. Characteristic magnetic components of presumed depositional age record a sequence of 9 normal and reverse polarity magnetozones (as defined by at least three stratigraphically superposed samples) linked by conodont and palynofloral evidence from this study and the literature to Rhaetian to Triassic–Jurassic boundary age. This represents a significantly larger number of polarity zones than previously recognized in more condensed Rhaetian sections from the literature, and by inference represents more time. These data are placed in a broader Late Triassic temporal framework by means of correlations to published magneto-biostratigraphic data from the Tethyan marine Pizzo Mondello section and the Newark astronomical polarity time scale (APTS). This framework is consistent with a position of the Norian–Rhaetian boundary (as defined at Brumano and Pizzo Mondello by the first appearance of Misikella posthernsteini) within Newark magnetozones E17r–E19r in the ~ 207–210 Ma time interval, in basic agreement with the position originally estimated in the Newark using pollen biostratigraphy (E18 at 208–209 Ma). This framework is also consistent with the position of the Triassic–Jurassic boundary interval (placed at Italcementi Quarry at the acme of Kraeuselisporites reissingeri coincident with a negative carbon isotope excursion) correlative to just above Newark magnetozone E23r and just below the oldest CAMP lavas dated at ~ 202 Ma. Hence, we estimate the duration of the Rhaetian to be ~ 5.5–8.5 Myr (or even longer if the Triassic–Jurassic boundary is instead placed above the negative carbon isotope excursion as at Kuhjoch, which is the designated GSSP for the base of the Hettangian), and encompassing 9 magnetozones. This duration contrasts with a duration of ~ 2 Myr and only ~ 4 magnetozones in several alternative published magneto-biostratigraphic schemes.  相似文献
