Brown trout, Salmo trutta, and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, have been introduced to freshwaters in Hokkaido, Japan. Today, it is recognized that these introduced salmonids have negative impacts on native salmonids such as white-spotted charr, Salvelinus leucomaenis, and masu salmon, O. masou. In particular, interspecific competition may be an important mechanism that could contribute to the exclusion for native salmonids. In this study, experimental pairwise contests were conducted to compare interference competitive ability between native and introduced salmonids. We demonstrated that brown trout were competitively superior to white-spotted charr and masu salmon whereas rainbow trout were superior to white-spotted charr. We suggest that introduced brown trout negatively impact both white-spotted charr and masu salmon, and introduced rainbow trout negatively impact white-spotted charr.  相似文献

Synopsis Spawning behaviour, fertilization success and reproductive ecology of stream-resident and lake-run male Miyabe charr, Salvelinus malma miyabei, were studied under natural and artificial conditions. In Shikaribetsu Lake, Japan, the ratio of the two types of males is approximately 1:1, estimated by weir data. The majority of stream-resident males mature sexually at 2+ years of age, while the lake-run males begin to mature at 4+. In contrast to the large-bodied lake-run males, which paired with females, the smaller stream-resident males attempted to fertilize eggs by ‘streaking’ into the nest. We demonstrated through electrophoretic techniques that stream-resident males were able to fertilize eggs by streaking. Under artificial conditions, the estimated maximum proportion of eggs fertilized by a single stream-resident male was about 16.8. The evolutionary stability of the charr's dual mating system may be explained by Gross's theory for alternative life-history evolution, although further testing is necessary.  相似文献

Using an artificial stream, habitat use by two sympatric native salmonids in the presence and absence of introduced salmonid species was investigated experimentally. When only native white‐spotted charr Salvelinus leucomaenis and masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou were sympatric, they occupied different microhabitats. In the presence of introduced brown trout Salmo trutta or rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss , however, white‐spotted charr and masu salmon were observed to use a similar habitat and interspecific competition between white‐spotted charr and masu salmon was initiated. The study suggested that the coexistence of native salmonids was negatively affected through interspecific competition between native and introduced salmonids.  相似文献

1. Endangered native populations of stream salmonids in Japan face three major threats: (i) negative interactions with introduced hatchery‐reared fish, (ii) fragmentation of habitat by impassable dams and (iii) recreational angling. 2. To prevent imminent extinction of many local populations, we evaluated these threats and possible conservation actions for red‐spotted masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae) and white‐spotted charr (Salvelinus leucomaenis japonicus) in the Fuji River system in central Japan. 3. Red‐spotted masu salmon and white‐spotted charr occupied only 0.73 and 2.4% of suitable thermal habitats, respectively, with masu salmon typically occupying habitats closer to human population centres. 4. Population viability analysis resulted in a 100‐year probability of extinction of 78.1% for masu salmon and 48.1% for charr. However, extinction risk of both species was predicted to be <5% if the carrying capacity increased from 141 to 303 for masu salmon and from 94 to 125 for charr, by allowing fish passage at the lower end of the habitat, and if annual adult survival rate increased by 0.04. Adult survival rate was the principal factor associated with population persistence. 5. To conserve isolated populations of stream‐dwelling salmonids, we recommend (i) assessing the distribution of remnant native and non‐native fish populations, (ii) that fishing regulations are modified to improve adult survival and population persistence and (iii) that fragmented reaches be reconnected to adjacent habitat, for example by removing or modifying artificial barriers to increase the carrying capacity of the isolated populations. Reconnection of fragmented reaches should, however, be avoided if it results in non‐native fish invading isolated populations.  相似文献

 The diet and foraging microhabitat of white-spotted charr, Salvelinus leucomaenis, were compared between mountain stream reaches where it occurs with (sympatric) and without (allopatric) masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou masou, a potential competitor, to examine the evidence for interspecific competition between these fish, which commonly co-occur in Japanese mountain streams. In three streams examined, the similarity between the diets of allopatric charr and salmon was much greater than that between the diets of sympatric charr and salmon. Both allopatric charr and sympatric salmon intensively utilized terrestrial invertebrates among stream drifts (52%–65% of the diet), whereas this prey category made up only an intermediate portion of sympatric charr diets (11%–29%). Examination of available prey composition in stream drifts showed that the consumption of terrestrial invertebrates by allopatric charr and sympatric salmon was approximately twice as much as that by sympatric charr. The presence of salmon, a potential competitor, may alter the diet of charr in the sympatric reaches. Charr holding focal points closer to the streambed were considered less efficient than sympatric salmon in their utilization of terrestrial invertebrates drifting primarily on the stream surface, although the foraging microhabitat of the charr was not influenced by the salmon. The mechanisms responsible for the dietary divergence between sympatric charr and salmon are probably the consequence of scramble competition over terrestrial invertebrates drifting on the stream surface. We examined seasonal changes in population densities of stream salmonids (masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou, white-spotted charr Salvelinus leucomaenis, and rainbow trout O. mykiss) in two tributaries of the Shoro River, eastern Hokkaido, Japan. In one small tributary, water temperature was relatively high during the winter, and populations of salmon and trout increased through immigration at this time of the year, becoming dominant components of the salmonid assemblage; the density of charr in this stream decreased during the winter, but charr was dominant during the summer. In another medium-sized tributary, the water temperature fell to close to 0°C during the winter, and densities of salmon and charr decreased in this season, through emigration; trout were very rare in this stream. Seasonal patterns of stream salmonid densities vary among species and between localities, resulting in seasonal changes in species composition. For a comprehensive understanding of population processes, a whole-river survey across seasons will be necessary.  相似文献

We examined variations in age at seaward migration and sea age for the anadromous form of red-spotted masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae) in two Japanese rivers. The anadromous form of red-spotted masu salmon expressed only two sea migration patterns in the two rivers: (a) the majority of the salmon (95%, n = 81) were of age-0, and age-1 migrants were rare (n = 4); and (b) all the salmon examined (n = 22) made a return migration within a year, with 23% of the salmon exhibiting potamodromy in the river. Owing to low variation in their sea migratory patterns, the anadromous form of red-spotted masu salmon is likely vulnerable to environmental fluctuations.  相似文献

 In lacustrine masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou, originated from anadromous fish and inhabiting an artificial lake (Shumarinai Lake), we examined the relationship between individual growth during the juvenile stage and phase differentiation under artificial rearing conditions. In females, the mean fork length of potential (subsequent) 1+ smolts and potential 1+ parr (1+ parr show fish that neither smolted nor matured until 1+ autumn) always differed after their first summer (0+ summer), the former being larger. In males, the juveniles that grew faster during their first spring became 0+ mature male parr. After their first summer, potential 1+ smolts were always larger in body length than potential 1+ mature parr and potential 1+ parr. These results were similar to previous reports of anadromous masu salmon, suggesting that the lacustrine masu salmon studied seems to have maintained the phase differentiation as in the original fish, likely because only 60 years have passed since the formation of the lacustrine population.  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation by damming can affect the persistence of single species population and also coexistence of two or more species through intensified competition. This study examined the effects of habitat fragmentation by damming on the coexistence of two stream-dwelling salmonids: the southern form of white-spotted charr (Salvelinus leucomaenis japonicus) and the red-spotted masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae). We examined charr, salmon, and dam distributions in 27 streams of the Fuji River basin, central Japan. In the 1970s, there were streams with five sympatric and 22 allopatric populations (n = 13 for charr, n = 9 for salmon). However, from the 1970s to 2004, 356 impassable dams were constructed in the surveyed streams, and four of the five sympatric streams became allopatric. In the extant sympatric stream, more than 20 dams fragmented habitat. Species distributions were separated by dams (with decreasing altitude) in the following order: extirpation area, charr-dominant area, and salmon-dominant area. Within the uppermost sympatric section (i.e., situated between the dams), salmon congregated in the largest uppermost pool just below the dam; despite these conditions, salmon frequency increased in the downstream direction at the stream scale. The results suggest that habitat fragmentation threatens the coexistence of stream-dwelling charr and salmon at both the basin and stream scales. We believe that exclusion of one species by another is likely in extremely fragmented habitats with minimal gradients and little variation in physical conditions (through reduced stream gradient and increased sand sedimentation caused by damming). In addition, multiple sites of damming ensure that there are no salmonid refuges from the collapse of metapopulation structure. In such fragmented habitats, even small tributaries serve important roles, as they are used mainly by salmonid fry and juveniles. We propose that habitats of native salmonids should be maximized by reconnecting fragmented habitats as part of a broader management plan.  相似文献

Movement of the fluvial form of red-spotted masu salmon (1+ and older),Oncorhynchus masou rhodurus, was studied using mark-recapture methods in a Japanese mountain stream. Most (63–91%) adult salmon were recaptured in the pool in which they were marked. The rest of the salmon moved upstream or downstream <20m during the non-breeding period. The proportion of the salmon moving increased slightly during the breeding period, but did not exceed 66%. The distance moved was also more variable during this period. The proportion of the smaller salmon which moved was larger than that of the larger fish during the non-breeding period. Conversely, during the breeding period, larger fish moved more frequently. Sedentary behaviour and local movements of adult salmon seem to be affected by their social relationships.  相似文献

Growth, age structure, sexual maturation, and peculiarities of the life history strategy adoption were studied for the population of masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou inhabiting the Kol River, Western Kamchatka. The growth rate and gametogenesis depended on the peculiarities of masu salmon generations in certain years and were the limiting factors for the juvenile differentiation and the direction of its ontogenetic development. The adoption of the resident or anadromous life history strategy in masu salmon is the epigenetic process, and the bifurcation during the life span of a single specimen is observed only once in a life, but twice in the generation, at the age of 1+ or 2+. The diversity of the life history strategy patterns was less at the northern boundary of the geographical range of masu salmon compared to the area of ecological optimum (the basin of the Sea of Japan). In the Kol River basin, nearby the northern boundary of its geographical range, the reproductive success and formation of the life history strategy diversity in the population depended strictly on the temperature regime of the water bodies, where the spawning and the freshwater period of life cycle of masu salmon take place. In Kamchatka, all the breeders were monocyclic, i.e. anadromous and resident precocious males spawned only once in a life.  相似文献

Genetic differentiation of two sympatric charr species, the Dolly Varden charr (Salvelinus malma Walbaum) and the Taranetz charr (S. taranetzi Kaganovski), has been studied. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis has been used to compare three mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) fragments (ND1/ND2, ND5/ND6, and Cytb/D-loop) amplified via polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The divergence between S. malma and S. taranetzi inferred from mtDNA nucleotide sequences is 2.8%; between S. leucomaenis and S. taranetzi, 7.1%; and between S. malma and S. leucomaenis, 7.5%. The absence of common haplotypes and the degree of divergence indicate that the Dolly Varden charr and the Taranetz charr are genetically isolated and confirm that S. taranetzi may be regarded as a separate species.  相似文献

Distribution of nitroxidergic and H2S-producing neurons in the brain of the masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou was studied by methods of histochemical labeling of NADPH-diaphorase and by immunohistochemical labeling of the neuronal nitric oxide synthase and cystathionine β-synthase (CBS). The established distribution of CBS and nNOS/NADPH-d of neurons and fibers in the masu salmon telencephalon, optic tectum, and cerebellum allows suggesting that the NO- and H2S-producing systems represent individual, non-overlapping neuronal complexes performing specialized functions in the activity of local neuronal networks. In the medullar part, the nNOS-ir and NADPH-d-positive neurons were detected in the composition of viscerosensory (V, VII, and IX–X) and visceromotor (III, IV, and VI) nuclei of craniocerebral nerves, octavolateral afferent complex, reticulospinal neurons, and medial reticular formation. CBS in the masu salmon medulla was revealed in neurons of the nerve X nucleus, reticulospinal neurons, and ventrolateral reticular formation. Distribution of NO-ergic and H2S-producing neurons in the masu salmon medullar nuclei indicates that NO in masu salmon is the predominant neuromodulator of the medullar viscerosensory systems, while H2S seems to modulate only the descending motor systems. The results of the performed study allow suggesting that NO in the masu salmon medulla periventricular area can act as a regulator of postnatal ontogenesis.  相似文献

Aggressive interactions, foraging behaviour and microhabitat use were observed among four sympatric stream fishes inhabiting the water column: ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis), white-spotted charr (Salvelinus leucomaenis), masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) and Japanese dace (Tribolodon hakonensis), each species being categorised into five body-size classes (species-size groups; SSG's). Aggressive interactions were observed between most pairs of SSG's, an almost linear dominance order being apparent throughout the three-month study period. Ayu were relatively subordinate in June, but became the second most dominant in July and the most dominant in August, as a consequence of a reversal in dominance order with salmon. In contrast, smaller-sized dace, which continually suffered from intra- and interspecific aggression, occupied the most subordinate ranks throughout the study period. Intensive aggression was observed among various SSG's, exhibiting same microhabitat propensity throughout the three months. The direction and frequency of aggressive interactions varied month by month due to a reversal in dominance order between ayu and masu salmon, and/or changes in density, body size and resource use of the component members. Opponent selectivity was higher within SSG's, where resource use was assumed to be highly overlapping, rather than among SSG's throughout the study period. Correlation analysis indicated that opponent selectivity in aggressive interactions among SSG's was positively correlated with similarity in microhabitat selectivity in June, but not in other months or with that in foraging habits, suggesting that intensive aggressive behaviour reflected overlapping habitat use among assemblage members during a certain period.  相似文献

This study compared the growth rates of female masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou, who possessed a male‐specific gene marker, the growth hormone pseudogene (GHp), and normal females, as estimated from their scale growth. There was a difference between the growth rates of GHp‐positive females and those of normal females of the same age during the ocean period, although their growth rates during the river period were similar. These results suggest that GHp‐positive salmonid females exhibit male‐like characteristics such as reduced feeding activity during the ocean period, which depresses their growth.  相似文献

Nematodes that parasitize salmonids are found in both seawater and freshwater. Unlike seawater species such as those in family Anisakidae, freshwater species have not been well studied. In particular, the influences of these nematodes on the body condition of salmonids remain unclear. We studied the effects of Salmonema cf. ephemeridarum on the body condition of masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou. We found a positive relationship between the number of parasites and fish fork length. In contrast, we found a negative relationship between the body condition (condition factor) of fish and the number of parasites. These results suggest that nematode infection could affect host energy reserves for future growth.  相似文献

  1. Climate oscillations during the Pleistocene had profound effects on the evolutionary history of freshwater fishes now distributed across northern temperate regions. The extent of continental glaciation on the western side of the North Pacific, including areas of East Asia, was more limited as compared with regions of North America, Europe and high-latitude areas of the North Pacific. Therefore, the effects of climate oscillations might have influenced species in dissimilar ways depending on the species' distribution.
  2. We used mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and microsatellite DNA (msDNA) markers to clarify the evolutionary history of masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou subspecies-complex (family Salmonidae) distributed in historically non-glaciated regions in the western North Pacific.
  3. No marked regional or subspecies-specific mtDNA haplotype associations were recognised, except for O. masou subsp., a lacustrine form endemic to Lake Biwa, an ancient lake in central Honshu. The landlocked subspecies O. masou formosanus, with a disjunct distribution on Taiwan Island, exhibited no diagnostic population features differing from the other subspecies, in either mtDNA or msDNA markers. Mismatch distribution and Bayesian skyline plot analyses indicated relatively recent range expansion and rapid population growth for masu salmon during the last glacial period (c. 0.1–0.15 Ma).
  4. Contrary to the mtDNA genealogy, Bayesian clustering using msDNA showed two main genetic clusters, mainly northern populations of the subspecies O. m. masou and populations of the subspecies O. m. ishikawae in southern areas of the Japanese Archipelago. Notably, O. m. formosanus on Taiwan Island was included in the O. m. masou group, and O. masou subsp. was included in the O. m. ishikawae group.

Our results suggest that the masu salmon subspecies-complex in historically non-glaciated regions of the Temperate Northern Pacific is characterised by weak population structuring and shallow genetic differentiation among the subspecies, except for O. masou subsp. owing to its long isolation in Lake Biwa. Incomplete lineage sorting and historical inter-subspecies hybridisation, possibly due to secondary contact, seem to be plausible explanations for discrepancies in the mitochondrial DNA genealogy and nuclear DNA genetic structure.

Genetic differentiation of Dolly Varden char Salvelinus malma Walbaum from the Asian and North American Pacific coasts was studied. We examined restriction fragment length polymorphism of three mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) fragments amplified in polymerase chain reaction, which encoded four NADH dehydrogenase subunits, the cytochrome b gene, and a D-loop segment. The mtDNA haplotypes were shown to form three phylogenetic groups, whose geographic distribution corresponded to three Dolly Varden subspecies: S. malma malma, S. malma krascheninnikovi, and S. malma lordi. The nucleotide sequence divergence between S. malma malma and S. malma krascheninnikovi was 3.8%; between S. malma malma and S. malma lordi, 3.1%; and between S. malma krascheninnikovi and S. malma lordi, 2.5%. Individual growth patterns in red-spotted masu salmon,Oncorhynchus masou rhodurus, were examined by mark and recapture in a mountain stream, central Japan. The growth pattern varied substantially among individuals of the same age cohort in the stream. Mean absolute growth rates of the individuals were neither significantly different between years, study sections along the stream course, or sexes, but showed significant differences between seasons. No correlation was found between the individual growth rate of fish and the area of pools they inhabited. However, there was considerable growth variation among inhabitants of the same pool. Within a pool, larger individuals grew more rapidly than smaller ones, despite there being no significant relationship between individual growth rates and initial body weights in the stream overall. Individual growth differences probably resulted from growth depensation caused by intraspecific competition within individual pools.  相似文献

Masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou masou, is an economically important fish species in the Far East and occurs in two life history forms: sea-run migratory (anadromous) and freshwater resident (non-anadromous). The non-anadromous form has recently become a popular freshwater food and game fish during a well-known Korean winter festival. However, the genetic background of this species remains largely unknown, partly due to a lack of molecular genetic markers. In this study, we developed new polymorphic microsatellite markers for masu salmon using next-generation sequencing technology. From 40 primer sets, 11 primer sets (27.5% of the primer sets selected) were successfully amplified with 106 alleles (range 2–9) in 64 individuals from different populations: two wild and one hatchery. Observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.304 to 0.947 and 0.278 to 0.865, respectively. Significant departures from the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium were detected for four markers (OMM11, OMM17, OMM28, and OMM33) in a single population. All pair-wise FST values were highly significant between the wild and hatchery populations (range 0.084–0.183, P < 0.0001). We identified a set of robust microsatellite markers that worked well even in formalin-fixed samples, which will be suitable for biogeographical and population structure analyses of the masu salmon.  相似文献
