The influence of food abundance on red fox feeding habits was studied in the Swiss Jura Mountains between November 1990 and February 1992, during a low density period in the water vole population cycle. Six food categories–water voles, small mammals, domestic stock, earthworms, wild fruits and exploitable scraps–were censused during the present research and their seasonal abundances were estimated in fixed plots. Fox scats were collected and analysed at regular monthly intervals.
The diet of foxes was found to be correlated with seasonal food supply. A positive significant correlation between seasonal abundances and relative proportions in the diet was found for food categories showing a clear seasonality (earthworms, wild fruits and exploitable scraps), whereas no correlation was recorded for the other food resources. Diet composition observed in the present study was compared with that recorded in the same study area between 1988 and 1990 by Weber & Aubry (1993), when water voles were very common and accounted for more than 50% of the diet. A significant change was recorded in red fox feeding habits: the most important aspects of this modification of the diet was the decrease in water vole importance accompanied by the increase in the frequency of occurrence of other food categories, such as wild fruits and scavengeable items.  相似文献

Research on the feeding habits of mammalian carnivores relies mainly on the analysis of stomach contents and faecal samples, but the outcomes of these two methods have only been compared in a few studies, with contrasting conclusions. In an Alpine area of NW Italy, we analysed both fox faeces collected along standardised transects, and the stomach contents of road-killed individuals. Faecal analysis involved the identification of macroscopic fragments, the identification of earthworm chaetae, and the assessment of relative volumes using Kruuk and Parish’s technique. Use of both methods indicated that the diet of the red fox included mainly fruit and mammals, but quantitative differences emerged. Garbage, birds, and cultivated fruit were overrepresented in the stomach contents, while earthworms, mammals, and wild fruit prevailed in the faecal samples. Logistic Regression Analysis suggested that the method of analysis was the main factor in determining the occurrence of food items in fox diet. Nonetheless, evidence suggests that road-killed foxes may include a disproportionately high percentage of synanthropic individuals and therefore be biased towards anthropogenic food. Results suggest that by using Kruuk and Parish’s technique, the main limitation of faecal analysis, i.e. the inaccurate estimation of the relative volume of each food item, can be overcome.  相似文献

Data on the spatial structure of an Arctic fox (Alopex lagopus beringensis) colony were obtained in July-August 1995, using walk counts and observations near living dens around the Northern rookery of the northern fur seals located on Bering Island (Commander Islands). The home ranges of 31 Arctic fox families (61 adults and 145 pups inhabiting 66 dens) were found over 27 km of the coastline. Sixty individuals (3 adults and 57 pups) were marked by color ear-tags. Among adult foxes, 24 (39.3%) were recognized as females and 12 (19.7%) as males; the sex of 25 (41.0%) foxes was not recognized. Among 57 marked cubs, 26 (45.6%) were females and 31 (54.4%) were males. The best studied families (13) had 3–11 pups (6.7 ± 0.7, on average). The survival of cubs at an age younger than 2.0–2.5 months was 82.5%; 30.8% of the families consisted of more than two adults. The distribution of the Arctic fox dens and home ranges along the coastline has been studied; specific features of the location of dens have been described. In the studied area, Arctic foxes have been foraging on birds (67.6% of dens with food remains), northern fur seals (40.5), other marine mammals (13.5), Pacific salmon (29.7), and reindeer (2.7%), as well as on amphipods and voles. Rich constant food sources (rookeries, marine bird colonies, and spawning places of the blueback salmon) were found in 7 home ranges of the Arctic fox; 6 home ranges included temporary food sources (spawning streams of the humpback salmon); and 18 home ranges were poor in food resources. Arctic foxes whose home ranges lie within 6–7 km around a “food patch” used the concentrated food resources together. Food resources are supposed to become important only after the raised pups turn to self-feeding. Differences in the use of space, foraging and breeding of the two Arctic fox subspecies (A. l. beringensis and A. l. semenovi), and arrangement of colonies around the northern fur seal rookeries are discussed.  相似文献

The diet of jackals was studied in the Mediterranean lowlands of Fokida and Samos island, Greece, by analyzing 127 scats collected between January 2002 and May 2003. Across all seasons frequencies of food items show that the most common items were mammals (frequency 42.7%, biomass 69.8%) and birds (12.0%, biomass 27.7%). Although the frequencies of plant material (27.3%) and insects (18.0%) were quite high, their biomass contribution was low (1.7%, 0.8% respectively). Most of the biomass consumed composed of mammals of domestic livestock origin (55.9%) which were presumably scavenged. This reveals the importance of this food item to the opportunistic jackals in wildlife-poor ecosystems like the anthropogenic Mediterranean lowlands. The occurrence of small mammals in the scats was very low while very few traces of grass and human refuse (such as leftovers of meals, plastic, pieces of paper etc.) were found in the diet of jackals. Furthermore, the findings support the opportunistic nature of a species capable to exploit any easily available food source.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The present study explored sex-specific differences in the Big Five factors of personality between different pet ownership groups, in order to understand individual differences in the choice of companion animals. A total of 250 pet owners completed a German version of the NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). For the first analysis, participants were divided into four broad groups: those owning traditional pets (e.g., cats, dogs), those owning cold-blooded exotic pets, those owning warm-blooded exotic pets, and those not owning animals. For the second analysis, participants were subdivided into nine groups, based on species of animal owned: cats, dogs, birds, fish, reptiles, spider/insect, small mammals, owners of many different animals, and non-owners. In both analyses, separate analyses of variance were applied to the scores of the NEO-FFI scales. Interaction effects between sex and several ownership groups on the traits Openness to Experience and Agreeableness were found in both analyses. Female owners of traditional pets scored, for example, significantly lower on openness to experience than female owners of cold-blooded exotic pets as well as male owners of traditional pets. Furthermore, female owners of cold-blooded exotic pets scored significantly higher on openness to experience than their male counterparts. Regarding agreeableness, male owners of cold-blooded exotic pets scored significantly lower than their female counterparts as well as male owners of traditional pets. These and other results indicate that personality may affect choice of pets—but in different directions for the two sexes.  相似文献

Milk intake of fox cubs (2-16 days of age; body weight, 96-649 g) in ten blue fox litters and ten silver fox litters were measured by the water isotope dilution (WID) technique following a single intraperitoneal injection of tritiated water (3HHO). Litter size varied from four to 14 in blue foxes and from three to eight in silver foxes. Silver fox cubs had higher birth weights than blue foxes. Inter-species body weights and growth rates were apparently dependent on litter size and the dam's constitution. In both species growth rate increased with age and body weight (7-35 g per day). In the cubs, the biological half-life of body water turnover (BWT) rose from 1.5 days at 2-3 days of age to 2.5 days at 13-16 days of age, although a considerable scatter was seen. The mean daily milk intake of the cubs varied with body weight, from 31 to 193 g per day, whereas daily milk intake per unit of body mass remained stable at 30-35 g per 100 g body weight. The ratio of milk intake to body weight gain varied considerably among cubs, averaging 4.5 g/g during the 3-week experimental period. In suckling fox cubs, the calculated daily intake of metabolically energy (ME) corresponded fairly with the estimated energy requirements for growth and maintenance of the young. Finally, the applicability and the accuracy of the WID technique was evaluated in ten 3-week-old fox cubs, by tube-feeding with a milk replacer for 48 h, which documented that the daily rates of milk intake and water turnover can be accurately measured in suckling fox cubs by the WID technique following a single injection of 3HHO.  相似文献

1. Two adult female badgers were water-deprived and/or fasted during the last one-half to two-thirds of pregnancy while a third pregnant female received water ad libitum and was fed meat and dog food. 2. The litter size, birth weights, post partum energy consumption, growth rate, development of homeothermy, tooth eruption and date of weaning, as well as other developmental characteristics, were not significantly different between cubs born to the fed or fasted mothers. 3. The energy demands for gestation are apparently small and are accommodated by fat reserves during periods of food deprivation. However, the calculated energy for lactation is 16 times that of gestation, which is quadruple the expenditure for most mammals. 4. As a result of delayed implantation, the length of gestation and litter weights of badgers are considerably below those predicted from allometric equations. 5. The period of lactation is therefore extremely critical to the survival of both the cubs and lactating adults which require heavy fat stores and possibly torpor to ensure sufficient energy availability during prolonged winter food shortage.  相似文献

Camera traps deployed at a badger Meles meles set in mixed pine forest in north-eastern Poland recorded interspecific killing of red fox Vulpes vulpes cubs by pine marten Martes martes. The vixen and her cubs settled in the set at the beginning of May 2013, and it was abandoned by the badgers shortly afterwards. Five fox cubs were recorded playing in front of the den each night. Ten days after the first recording of the foxes, a pine marten was filmed at the set; it arrived in the morning, made a reconnaissance and returned at night when the vixen was away from the set. The pine marten entered the den several times and killed at least two fox cubs. It was active at the set for about 2 h. This observation proves that red foxes are not completely safe from predation by smaller carnivores, even those considered to be subordinate species in interspecific competition.  相似文献

Sexually selected infanticide (SSI) is often presumed to be rare among seasonal breeders, because it would require a near immediate return to estrus after the loss of an entire litter during the mating season. We evaluated changes in reproductive strategies and the reproductive fate of females that experienced litter loss during the mating season in a seasonal breeder with strong evidence for SSI, the brown bear. First, we used a long‐term demographic dataset (1986–2011) to document that a large majority of females (>91%) that lose their entire litter during the mating season in fact do enter estrus, mate, and give birth during the subsequent birthing season. Second, we used high‐resolution movement data (2005–2011) to evaluate how females changed reproductive strategies after losing their entire litter during the mating season. We hypothesized that females would shift from the sedentary lifestyle typical for females with cubs‐of‐the‐year to a roam‐to‐mate behavior typical for receptive females in no more than a few (~3) days after litter loss. We found that females with cubs‐of‐the‐year moved at about 1/3 of the rate and in a less bimodal diurnal pattern than receptive females during the mating season. The probability of litter loss was positively related with movement rate, suggesting that being elusive and sedentary is a strategy to enhance cub survival rather than a relic of cub mobility itself. The movement patterns of receptive females and females after litter loss were indistinguishable within 1–2 days after the litter loss, and we illustrate that SSI can significantly reduce the female interbirth interval (50–85%). Our results suggest that SSI can also be advantageous for males in seasonally breeding mammals. We propose that infanticide as a male reproductive strategy is more prevalent among mammals with reproductive seasonality than observed or reported.  相似文献

Red fox Vulpes vulpes predation on roe deer Capreolus capreolus fawns has the potential to strongly affect prey population dynamics, but it is unclear whether this relationship is symmetrical or not. We analysed the spring–summer diet of adult foxes and of their cubs in a fragmented agricultural area of southeastern Norway, where a parallel study showed that the predator kills annually 25% of the radio-monitored roe deer fawns. The overall diet was highly varied and was dominated by small mammals (33% volume), especially Microtus agrestis, and medium-large mammals (25%), largely represented by fawns. The frequency of occurrence (FO) of fawns in the diet of adult foxes was highest in early spring, thus, supporting previous studies showing that the predator started actively hunting for fawns from the very beginning of the birth season. During the summer, the FO of both fawns and small mammals markedly declined, while that of berries and invertebrates increased. As expected for central-place foragers, cubs consumed a higher proportion of large prey items compared to adults. In particular, 25% of scats from cubs—versus 9% from adults—contained roe deer remains, suggesting a high profitability of fawns for vixens raising offspring. However, considering the wide food spectrum and the availability of several large prey items in our study area, it seems unlikely that the importance of fawns to the diet and population dynamics of red foxes could be as great as the impact of the predator on roe deer populations. This asymmetrical relationship implies that there are unlikely to be any stabilising feedback mechanisms in the predator–prey relationship.  相似文献

The aim of our study was to assess the effects of aviation noise on reproduction and cub mortality in farmed blue foxes. Eighty artificially inseminated blue fox vixens (45 primiparous and 35 multiparous) were exposed to aviation noise on 5 days when they were pregnant or had cubs. The noise during the exposures varied from 85 to 121 dB (L(AFmax)). Vixens (45 primiparous and 34 multiparous) on a farm without flight action acted as controls. Cubs were counted 1, 3, 7, 14 and 49 days postpartum and at the beginning of July. Litter size (cubs per whelped vixen), reproductive performance (cubs per mated vixen) and cub losses (lost cubs per whelped vixen) were analyzed from both experimental farms (A and C). The flight action had no effect on reproductive success. Reproductive performance in primiparous vixens was 4.2+/-3.8 and 4.3+/-3.6 cubs (ns, Mann-Whitney U-test) in the control and aviation group, respectively, while in multiparous vixens the corresponding figures were 7.1+/-4.4 and 7.3+/-3.8 cubs (ns). In general, litter size declined from birth to weaning (in primiparous vixens from 8.1+/-3.8 to 5.4+/-3.2 cubs, and in multiparous from 9.7+/-3.8 to 7.2+/-3.8 cubs, P<0.001, GLM for repeated measures). The decline was greater in primiparous than in multiparous vixens (P<0.01). There were no differences in total cub losses between the experimental groups (ns). Accordingly, the present results show that exposure to severe and repeated aviation noise does not impair the reproductive success of farmed blue foxes.  相似文献

Five hundred and thirteen fleas, of eight different species, were collected from a sample of 252 foxes killed in suburban London. 25–8% of foxes carried fleas, with a mean of 204 fleas per fox. Levels of infestation of male and female hosts did not differ significantly. Possible sources of the fleas infesting foxes are discussed with respect to their seasonal occurrence and fox prey composition. No evidence was found to support the suggestion that foxes obtain the majority of their fleas from prey items, although occasional heavy infestations of some flea species were probably derived from recent meals. Although Pulex irritans, Paraceras m. melis and Ctenocephalides canis , which contributed 35 % of the flea epifauna, could be considered parasitic on the fox, it seems probable that foxes pick up the majority of their fleas from the habitat through which they move. Thus, two particularly heavily infested categories of foxes were found: (1) juveniles during July-September, their fleas probably being accumulated during exploratory and play activities, and (2) all animals during the period October-December.  相似文献

Using cub growth as an index, I examine the influence of maternalnutrition, litter size, and cub sex on maternal care in cheetahs(Acinonyx jubatus) and compare cub and litter growth rates withthose of other large feilds. Seventy-nine free-living cheetahcubs in 21 litters from 15 mothers were weighed at least oncebetween 6 and 48 days of age. Eleven litters were weighed atthe beginning and end of a 5-day observation of their mothers. The mean cub growth rate varied significantly between litters, due primarily to differences in maternal food intake. Growthdeclined sharply when maternal food intake was less than 1.5kg/ day, but did not increase with greater levels of food intake.Lower limits of growth rates may therefore have been set bythe mother's food intake, whereas upper limits may be set bythe intrinsic physiological ability of cubs to grow. Althoughmale cubs were heavier than female cubs in the same litter whenfirst weighed, major differences in growth rate between thesexes were not apparent at this stage. Both cheetah cubs andlitters grow fast relative to other large felids, and I arguethat this may be an adaptation to the high rate of cheetah juvenilemortality from predation.  相似文献

The diversity and seasonal abundance of birds at Christchurch Airport, their food and feeding habits, and the phenology of the food resource were studied in 1968–69 as part of an investigation of the bird hazard to aircraft. The birds either fed and roosted on the airport or flew over or close to it. Seasonal trends in the diet of black‐backed gulls (Larus dominicanus), black‐billed gulls (L. bulleri), starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), and magpies (Gymnorhina tibicen hypoleuca) were determined by examining the gizzard contents of birds shot while they were feeding on the airfield. Marked food preferences were noticeably lacking, except that black‐backed gulls fed exclusively on earthworms. Black‐billed gulls, starlings, and magpies took a variety of insects, earthworms, arachnids, and, to a less extent, seeds. Species diversity, seasonal distribution, and abundance of invertebrates and seeds showed that the birds were opportunist feeders on a succession of temporarily abundant food, and their presence on the airfield was determined largely by the availability of invertebrates and seeds.  相似文献

Diet of arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) in Iceland   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Arctic foxes, Alopex lagopus , live in low productivity arctic and northern tundra habitats, where they generally prey heavily on lemmings. In Iceland, however, no lemmings are present, and the foxes have a very varied diet, including plants such as seaweed and black crowberries, a wide range of birds and invertebrates, and carcasses of large mammals such as seals, reindeer, and sheep. Marked seasonal, geographical and inter-annual differences confirm arctic foxes in Iceland as opportunistic feeders. There are coastal and inland foxes: coastal foxes feed mainly on prey derived directly or indirectly from the ocean, particularly various seabirds and seals, while inland foxes feed largely on migrant birds, such as geese, waders and passerines in summer, and ptarmigan in winter. Despite their reputation for killing lambs, in this study, lamb carcasses were found at only 19.4% of 1125 fox dens, 44% of which had only one carcass. The distance to the nearest farm and the physical condition of lambs were major determinants of the number of carcasses found at a den. We discuss the implications of arctic foxes' diet for population dynamics and group formation, and for management practices.  相似文献

Abstract

Pets are immensely popular in this country. However, the complex nature of human-animal interactions and the importance of these animals in everyday lives are not yet thoroughly understood. The human psychological needs that pet birds fulfill are even less understood than the role of other pets, such as dogs and cats. To compile a list of psychological needs filled by avian companions, 80 bird owners were asked to complete a survey that explored the nature of their relationships with their birds in everyday situations. Results revealed that avian companions most often filled human social needs, followed to a lesser degree by esteem and cognitive needs. The profile of human psychological needs filled by pet birds provides additional rationale and criteria for the use of pet birds in animal-assisted therapy and pet visitation programs.  相似文献

The arctic fox Alopex lagopus L population in Sweden is small and its numbers fluctuate widely with food availability, l e rodent populations This fluctuation is mediated through differences in recruitment rates between years The recruitment can be divided into three phases number of litters born, number of cubs per litter and cub survival rates The number of litters and their sizes have been shown to depend on food availability during winter and spring To examine cub survival during the summer and how it relates to food availability, we conducted a feeding experiment m northern Sweden during 1990, a year of low rodent density, involving six occupied arctic fox dens Feeding at dens lowered cub mortality rates However, condition and growth rates of juveniles were not influenced by supplementary feeding at dens, nor were they related to the probability of survival for an individual Thus arctic foxes seem to minimize risks rather than maximize growth The juvenile mortality from weaning and over the next 6 wk was 21%, mostly due to starvation Only 82% survived from weaning to the first breeding season Of the one-year-old foxes, 50% survived their second year Supplementary feeding of juveniles had no effect on the final survival rates over these two years However, the immediate, positive effect on cub survival could be used in a long-term, extensive management programme if combined with winter feeding  相似文献
