Floral ontogeny of Lespedeza thunbergii was studied with the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The ontogeny varies in all whorls from the undirectional mode, which has been long held to be the rule in Leguminosae. In the sepal whorl, the lateral and the adaxial sepals are formed simultaneously, which is interpreted as a tendency towards whorled organ formation. Whorled organ formation is shown in the petal whorl. The antesepalous stamen whorl varies least from the unidirectional mode. Here, the adaxial stamens are formed successively. This is seen as a remnant of an original helical organ formation in Papilionoideae. Within the antepetalous stamen whorl, the two abaxial stamens and the adaxial stamen are formed first, followed by the two lateral stamens. This is a rarely found phenomenon, which is hard to interpret at the present state of knowledge. Concerning the mature flower, it is shown that nectar stomata are found in a distinct area on the adaxial side of the flower. The presented new characteristics should be an initial step toward further work on taxa of the tribe Desmodieae. These studies will broaden the data set and enable a detailed phylogenetic analysis.

Nine species of Lippia (Verbenaceae) were studied by RAPD markers in order to evaluate the degree of genetic diversity. The following species were collected at the Cadeia do Espinhaço Mountains, Southeast Brazil: L. corymbosa, L. diamantinensis, L. filifolia, L. florida, L. hermannioides, L. lupulina, L. rotundifolia, L. rosella and L. sidoides. The analysis was performed using 18 primers that generated 490 fragments and only one primer was found to be monomorphic in all individuals. The average interspecific genetic distances were similar for all species and higher than the intraspecific genetic distances. Species with narrow occurrence did not show low intraspecific diversity. The molecular data were used to generate an UPGMA dendrogram that showed two major groups with a clear distribution among the species. RAPD analysis was efficient to address the genetic diversity of Lippia species and contributed to understand the adaptation to the environment, conservation and taxonomic implications.

Total DNA was extracted from 67 species (30 genera) of the subfamily Papilionoideae (family Leguminosae). The rbcL gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequenced directly. RbcL sequences were evaluated with character-state (maximum parsimony; PAUP) and distance methods (neighbour-joining; MEGA). Morphology-based classifications of tribes and subtribes are mostly congruent with rbcL phylogeny. Differences occur for members of the genus Sophora and for intratribal relationships within the Genista/Cytisus complex: Sophora appears in two clades; one clade with S. japonica at the base of the Papilionoideae and a second more advanced group (with S. davidii, S. jaubertii, and S.flavescens) which represents a sister clade of the Thermopsideae. The Cytisus complex includes the genera Cytisus, Chamaecytisus, Calicotome and Spartocytisus but not Cytisophyllum which appears as a distinct member of the Genista complex. Chamaespartium sagittale is very close to Genista supporting the view that it does not represent an independent genus but should be treated as Genista sagittalis. Close to Genista are Teline and Spartium, whereas Argyrolobium, Retama, Cytisophyllum, Ulex, Petteria, Adenocarpus, Chamaespartium tridentatum and Laburnum can be considered as “outliers” of the Genista-group sensu stricto. RbcL phylogeny is compared with profiles of alkaloids and other natural products. First results indicate that secondary metabolite profiles, if compared with morphology or rbcL sequences, are of limited value as a taxonomic marker.

Canavanine is a nitrogen-rich non-protein amino acid, with a supposedly dual role of food storage and defence in seeds and seedlings. It seems to be unique to Leguminosae subfamily Papilionoideae although it does not occur in all species or genera. This report extends the previous surveys for canavanine to 1200 species in 240 genera (including first records for 70 genera) and assesses the systematic and ecological significance of its distribution.

Floral organogenesis and development of the bushy perennial legume Astragalus caspicus were studied using epi-illumination light microscopy techniques. Based on our observations, flowers are in axillary two-flowered racemes, initiate all 21 floral organs and show precocious appearance of zygomorphy. The order of floral organ initiation is unidirectional in whorls starting from the abaxial position of the flower with a high degree of overlap. Another important ontogenetic feature is the existence of two successive common primordial stages categorized as primary and secondary. The primary common primordia produce antesepalous stamens and secondary common primordia. In contrast, the five secondary common primordia subdivide into a petal and an antepetalous stamen primordia. Our findings on floral ontogeny of A. caspicus provide new evidence for the complex and variable floral initiation and development in legumes. The floral apex with strong overlapping initiation of different organs illustrates a paradox in which different capabilities must be presumed to exist simultaneously. Moreover, two extraordinary types of common primordia represent possibly an advanced evolutionary trend where time intervals between the initiations of different floral organs in Papilionoideae are shortened.

Inflorescence and floral organogenesis and development of the bushy perennial legume Astragalus lagopoides of the section Hymenostegis were studied by means of epi-illumination light microscopy. Based on our observations, the primordia of lanceolate racemose inflorescences are born in the axils of leaves. Each inflorescence apex initiates acropetally bracts and floral apices for some time and then eventually ceases meristematic activity and forms an oblong-shaped terminal structure. The formation of such atypical terminal protrusion on the inflorescence meristem is judged to be a diagnostic feature for well-organized cessation of meristem morphogenesis. Pentamerous perfect flowers of the plant show strong zygomorphy and marked overlap in time of initiation among different organ primordia. Unexpectedly, sepal initiation is bidirectional starting from the lateral sides of the floral apex. Other significant developmental feature includes the existence of two types of common primordia, which are formed successively. From the primary common primordia there are produced antesepalous stamens and secondary common primordia. In comparison, the five secondary common primordia subdivide into a petal and an antepetalous stamen primordia. Initiation of two different types of common primordia is possibly the result of rising overlap in time of initiation of organs and demonstrates an advanced developmental style in the genus Astragalus.

A procedure has been developed to successfully micropropagate the IV-8 selection, an adult avocado rootstock. Cultures were
initiated from basal shoots obtained after pruning a tree back to ground level. Buds sprouted in Murashige and Skoog solid
medium with macroelements at half strength and a 1.3 μM benzyladenine supplement. To induce proliferation, shoots were cultured
for 2 weeks in liquid medium in a rollordrum with the Gamborg salt formulation and 1.3 μM benzyladenine, followed by 6 weeks
in double phase conditions (solid medium with a layer of liquid medium on the top) using the same salt formulation and two
different benzyladenine supplements, 2.8 μM in the solid phase and 0.4 μM in the liquid phase. Ninety percent of the shoots
rooted after a 3-day culture in liquid medium in a rollordrum with MS macroelements at 0.3× and 4.9 μM indolebutyric acid,
followed by transfer to solid medium in the absence of auxin but with 1 g l−1 activated charcoal. Survival rate during the acclimatization in the greenhouse was 70%.

Four types of floral breeding systems—(i) chasmogamy, (ii) aerial pseudocleistogamy, (iii) subterranean pseudocleistogamy and (iv) obligate subterranean true cleistogamy—are observed in the populations ofVigna minima inhabiting the Western Ghats (India). Five categories of phenotypes are recognized based on the number and kinds of floral breeding systems found in a given individual. The frequencies of different categories of phenotypes not only show intra- and interpopulation variation, but also fluctuate from generation to generation suggesting differences in the genetic structure of populations. This polymorphism in the breeding system of a single species is unique and may be adaptive. Obligate subterranean true cleistogamy and amphicarpy appear to be adaptations to jungle fires and soil erosion.—The flowers are of the flag-blossom type and insect visitors act as tripping agents. The tripping mechanism together with the polymorphic floral breeding system result in a balanced mixture of selfing and outcrossing. Such a recombination system may enhance the fitness ofV. minima which is essentially a colonizing species.

Paraveinal mesophyll (PVM) is a distinctive anatomical feature of the leaf mesophyll of some plant taxa that may represent a specialized physiological compartment. A comprehensive review of the 42 published references that mention PVM or similar cell layers and a survey of 121 of the 272 species of all nine genera of thePhaseoleae subtribeErythrininae demonstrate that PVM is nearly exclusively found inLeguminosae. InLeguminosae, PVM is either rare or absent in subfamilyCaesalpinioideae, uncommon inMimosoideae, and extensively distributed amongPapilionoideae. In subtribeErythrininae, PVM is ubiquitous inErythrina, and occurs in four other genera. ThreeErythrininae genera (Apios, Mucuna, andCochlianthus) lack PVM. Unique chloroplast-poor, enlarged conical cells (pellucid palisade idioblasts) occur in 80 species ofErythrina but not in any other genus ofErythrininae.

Summary The development and distribution of calcium oxalate crystals, stomates and hairs were studied in the first trifoliolate leaf ofRhynchosia caribaea (Leguminosae: Papilionoideae, Phaseoleae). Using light and transmission electron microscopy, the crystals were shown to occur in both bundle sheath and mesophyll cells. Crystal distribution and shapes are characteristic forRhynchosia. Crystals develop late in leaf development in contrast to the stomates and hairs. As these latter two structures decrease in number per unit area with leaf age, crystal number increases.

Summary Recently collected material of Sesbania (Leguminosae subfam. Papilionoideae) from western Ethiopia shows variation and character combinations not recorded in J.
B. Gillett’s revision of Sesbania from Africa and tropical Arabia from 1963 and combines three taxa in his revision, S. sudanica J. B. Gillett, S. sudanica subsp. occidentalis J. B. Gillett and S. hepperi J. B. Gillett. The three taxa are therefore united into one more variable species, S. sudanica, that can still be distinguished from other Sesbania species with no or hardly any free tips on the appendages on the standard by having the style pilose or tomentose and a long
sterile rostrum on a non- or only faintly torulose pod. The amended S. sudanica is distributed throughout the Sudanian woodland zone from near the Atlantic to the foothills of the Ethiopian highlands.
The distribution area agrees well with the Sudanian region in Frank White’s classification of African phytochoria.

Inflorescence and floral development of two tropical legume trees, Dahlstedtia pinnata and Dahlstedtia pentaphylla, occurring in the Atlantic Forest of south-eastern and southern Brazil, were investigated and compared with other papilionoids. Few studies have been made of floral development in tribe Millettieae, and this paper is intended to fill that gap in our knowledge. Dahlstedtia species have an unusual inflorescence type among legumes, the pseudoraceme, which comprises axillary units of three or more flowers, each with a subtending bract. Each flower exhibits a pair of opposite bracteoles. The order of flower initiation is acropetal; inception of the floral organs is as follows: sepals (5), petals (5), carpel (1) plus outer stamens (5) and finally inner stamens (5). Organ initiation in sepal, petal and inner stamen whorls is unidirectional; the carpel cleft is adaxial. The vexillum originates from a tubular-shaped primordium in mid-development and is larger than other petals at maturity, covering the keels. The filament tube develops later after initiation of inner-stamen primordia. Floral development in Dahlstedtia is almost always similar to other papilionoids, especially species of Phaseoleae and Sophoreae. But one important difference is the precocious ovule initiation (open carpel with ovules) in Dahlstedtia, the third citation of this phenomenon for papilionoids. No suppression, organ loss or anomalies occur in the order of primordia initiation or structure. Infra-generic differences in the first stages of ontogeny are rare; however, different species of Dahlstedtia are distinguished by the differing distribution pattern of secretory cavities in the flower.
