Recently, experimental results have demonstrated that the load carrying capacity of the human spine substantially increases under the follower load condition. Thus, it is essential to prove that a follower load can be generated in vivo by activating the appropriate muscles in order to demonstrate the possibility that the stability of the spinal column could be maintained through a follower load mechanism. The aim of this study was to analyze the coordination of the trunk muscles in order to understand the role of the muscles in generating the follower load. A three-dimensional finite element model of the lumbar spine was developed from T12 to S1 and 117 pairs of trunk muscles (58 pairs of superficial muscles and 59 pairs of deep muscles) were considered. The follower load concept was mathematically represented as an optimization problem. The muscle forces required to generate the follower load were predicted by solving the optimization problem. The corresponding displacements and rotations at all nodes were estimated along with the follower forces, shear forces, and joint moments acting on those nodes. In addition, the muscle forces and the corresponding responses were investigated when the activations of the deep muscles or the superficial muscles were restricted to 75% of the maximum activation, respectively. Significantly larger numbers of deep muscles were involved in the generation of the follower load than the number of superficial muscles, regardless of the restriction on muscle activation. The shear force and the resultant joint moment are more influenced by the change in muscle activation in the superficial muscles. A larger number of deep trunk muscles were activated in order to maintain the spinal posture in the lumbar spine. In addition, the deep muscles have a larger capability to reduce the shear force and the resultant joint moment with respect to the perturbation of the external load or muscle fatigue compared to the superficial muscles.  相似文献

The evolution of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and AChE molecular form distribution were studied in slow-tonic anterior latissimus dorsi (ALD) and in fast-twitch posterior latissimus dorsi (PLD) muscles of chickens 2-18 days of age. In ALD as well as in PLD muscles, the AChE-specific activity increased transiently from day 2 to day 4; the activity then decreased more rapidly in PLD muscle. During this period asymmetric AChE forms decreased dramatically in ALD muscle and the globular forms increased. In PLD muscle, the most striking change was the decline in A8 form between days 2 and 18 of development. Denervation performed at day 2 delayed the normal decrease in AChE-specific activity in PLD muscle, whereas little change was observed in ALD muscle. Moreover, A forms in these two muscles were virtually absent 8 days after denervation. Direct electrical stimulation depressed the rise in AChE-specific activity in denervated PLD muscle and prevented the loss of the A forms. Furthermore, the different molecular forms varied according to the stimulus pattern. In ALD muscle, electrical stimulation failed to prevent the effect of denervation. This study emphasizes the differential response of denervated slow and fast muscles to electrical stimulation and stresses the importance of the frequency of stimulation in the regulation of AChE molecular forms in PLD muscle during development.  相似文献

Abdominal muscles are the most important expiratory muscles for coughing. Spinal cord-injured patients have respiratory complications because of abdominal muscle weakness and paralysis and impaired ability to cough. We aimed to determine the optimal positioning of stimulating electrodes on the trunk for the noninvasive electrical activation of the abdominal muscles. In six healthy subjects, we compared twitch pressures produced by a single electrical pulse through surface electrodes placed either posterolaterally or anteriorly on the trunk with twitch pressures produced by magnetic stimulation of nerve roots at the T(10) level. A gastroesophageal catheter measured gastric pressure (Pga) and esophageal pressure (Pes). Twitches were recorded at increasing stimulus intensities at functional residual capacity (FRC) in the seated posture. The maximal intensity used was also delivered at total lung capacity (TLC). At FRC, twitch pressures were greatest with electrical stimulation posterolaterally and magnetic stimulation at T(10) and smallest at the anterior site (Pga, 30 +/- 3 and 33 +/- 6 cm H(2)O vs. 12 +/- 3 cm H(2)O; Pes 8 +/- 2 and 11 +/- 3 cm H(2)O vs. 5 +/- 1 cm H(2)O; means +/- SE). At TLC, twitch pressures were larger. The values for posterolateral electrical stimulation were comparable to those evoked by thoracic magnetic stimulation. The posterolateral stimulation site is the optimal site for generating gastric and esophageal twitch pressures with electrical stimulation.  相似文献

Skeletal muscles are surrounded by other muscles, connective tissue and bones, which may transfer transversal forces to the muscle belly. Simple Hill-type muscle models do not consider transversal forces. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine and model the influence of transversal muscle loading on contraction dynamics, e.g. on the rate of force development and on the maximum isometric muscle force (Fim). Isometric experiments with and without transversal muscle loading were conducted on rat muscles. The muscles were loaded (1.3 N cm? 2) by a custom-made plunger which was able to move in transversal direction. Then the muscle was fully stimulated, the isometric force was measured at the distal tendon and the movement of the plunger was captured with a high-speed camera. The interaction between the muscle and the transversal load was modelled based on energy balance between the (1) work done by the contractile component (CC) and (2) the work done to lift the load, to stretch the series elastic structures and to deform the muscle. Compared with the unloaded contraction, the force rate was reduced by about 25% and Fim was reduced by 5% both in the experiment and in the simulation. The reduction in Fim resulted from using part of the work done by the CC to lift the load and deform the muscle. The response of the muscle to transversal loading opens a window into the interdependence of contractile and deformation work, which can be used to specify and validate 3D muscle models.  相似文献

Strips of isolated rat diaphragm muscle were attached to a servomotor-transducer apparatus, and the muscle length was cycled in a sinusoidal fashion about the length at which maximum isometric twitch force was developed, Lo. The amplitude of the length displacement (excursion amplitude) and rate of cycling were varied between 3 and 13% Lo and 1-4 Hz respectively. The muscle was tetanically stimulated (100 Hz, supramaximal voltage, stimulus duration (duty cycle) 20% of the length cycle period) during the shortening stage of the imposed length cycle at the phase that yielded maximum net positive work. The force and displacement of the muscle were recorded. Work per cycle was calculated from the area of the loop formed by plotting force against length for one full stretch-shorten cycle. Work per cycle decreased, but power increased, as cycle frequency was increased from 1 to 4 Hz. Maximum work done per cycle was about 12.8 J/kg at a cycle frequency of 1 Hz. Maximum mean power developed was about 27 W/kg and occurred at a cycle frequency of 4 Hz. Work and power were maximum at an excursion amplitude of 13% of Lo (i.e., Lo +/- 6.5%). Measured work and power output are considerably less than values estimated from length-tension and force-velocity curves.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of eccentric exercise on the ability to exert steady submaximal forces with muscles that cross the elbow joint. Eight subjects performed two tasks requiring isometric contraction of the right elbow flexors: a maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) and a constant-force task at four submaximal target forces (5, 20, 35, 50% MVC) while electromyography (EMG) was recorded from elbow flexor and extensor muscles. These tasks were performed before, after, and 24 h after a period of eccentric (fatigue and muscle damage) or concentric exercise (fatigue only). MVC force declined after eccentric exercise (45% decline) and remained depressed 24 h later (24%), whereas the reduced force after concentric exercise (22%) fully recovered the following day. EMG amplitude during the submaximal contractions increased in all elbow flexor muscles after eccentric exercise, with the greatest change in the biceps brachii at low forces (3-4 times larger at 5 and 20% MVC) and in the brachialis muscle at moderate forces (2 times larger at 35 and 50% MVC). Eccentric exercise resulted in a twofold increase in coactivation of the triceps brachii muscle during all submaximal contractions. Force fluctuations were larger after eccentric exercise, particularly at low forces (3-4 times larger at 5% MVC, 2 times larger at 50% MVC), with a twofold increase in physiological tremor at 8-12 Hz. These data indicate that eccentric exercise results in impaired motor control and altered neural drive to elbow flexor muscles, particularly at low forces, suggesting altered motor unit activation after eccentric exercise.  相似文献

Influence of lung volume on oxygen cost of resistive breathing   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We examined the relationship between the O2 cost of breathing (VO2 resp) and lung volume at constant load, ventilation, work rate, and pressure-time product in five trained normal subjects breathing through an inspiratory resistance at functional residual capacity (FRC) and when lung volume (VL) was increased to 37 +/- 2% (mean +/- SE) of inspiratory capacity (high VL). High VL was maintained using continuous positive airway pressure of 9 +/- 2 cmH2O and with the subjects coached to relax during expiration to minimize respiratory muscle activity. Six paired runs were performed in each subject at constant tidal volume (0.62 +/- 0.2 liters), frequency (23 +/- 1 breaths/min), inspiratory flow rate (0.45 +/- 0.1 l/s), and inspiratory muscle pressure (45 +/- 2% of maximum static pressure at FRC). VO2 resp increased from 109 +/- 15 ml/min at FRC by 41 +/- 11% at high VL (P less than 0.05). Thus the efficiency of breathing at high VL (3.9 +/- 0.2%) was less than that at FRC (5.2 +/- 0.3%, P less than 0.01). The decrease in inspiratory muscle efficiency at high VL may be due to changes in mechanical coupling, in the pattern of recruitment of the respiratory muscles, or in the intrinsic properties of the inspiratory muscles at shorter length. When the work of breathing at high VL was normalized for the decrease in maximum inspiratory muscle pressure with VL, efficiency at high VL (5.2 +/- 0.3%) did not differ from that at FRC (P less than 0.7), suggesting that the fall in efficiency may have been related to the fall in inspiratory muscle strength. During acute hyperinflation the decreased efficiency contributes to the increased O2 cost of breathing and may contribute to the diminished inspiratory muscle endurance.  相似文献

Electromyographic electrodes were implanted in forelimb muscles of male American toads (Bufo americanus). Toads then were allowed to clasp an artificial clasp object incorporating a pair of solenoids that, when activated, produced a stimulus simulating the side vibrations normally associated with release signalling by conspecific males. Electromyographic activity, in response to the release stimulus, was recorded. The adductor muscle contracted immediately after stimulus onset (causing intensified clasping), responding to the stimulus as a displacement threat. Then the abductor muscle contracted (causing rapid unclasping, or releasing), responding to the stimulus as a release signal. These techniques have provided a better understanding of releasing than has been possible with natural objects (i.e., living males).  相似文献

The use of optimization techniques to predict individual muscle forces in redundant biomechanical systems implies the formulation of a criterion for load sharing between the muscles. In part I of this paper, the characteristics and performance of several linear and non-linear criteria reported in the literature have been compared for static-isometric knee flexion. The results show that linear criteria inherently predict discrete muscle action (orderly recruitment of muscles) whereas non-linear criteria can predict synergistic action. All criteria predict that relatively more force is allocated to muscles with large moment arms. When muscle stresses (or ratios of muscle force to maximum muscle force) are used as the decision variables in the objective function, then relatively more force is allocated to muscles with large maximum possible force as well. Future formulations of the optimization should consider the differences in fiber type composition among the muscles. Such an approach is presented in part II of the paper.  相似文献

We developed a powered ankle-foot orthosis that uses artificial pneumatic muscles to produce active plantar flexor torque. The purpose of this study was to quantify the mechanical performance of the orthosis during human walking. Three subjects walked at a range of speeds wearing ankle-foot orthoses with either one or two artificial muscles working in parallel. The orthosis produced similar total peak plantar flexor torque and network across speeds independent of the number of muscles used. The orthosis generated approximately 57% of the peak ankle plantar flexor torque during stance and performed approximately 70% of the positive plantar flexor work done during normal walking. Artificial muscle bandwidth and force-length properties were the two primary factors limiting torque production. The lack of peak force and work differences between single and double muscle conditions can be explained by force-length properties. Subjects altered their ankle kinematics between conditions resulting in changes in artificial muscle length. In the double muscle condition greater plantar flexion yielded shorter artificial muscles lengths and decreased muscle forces. This finding emphasizes the importance of human testing in the design and development of robotic exoskeleton devices for assisting human movement. The results of this study outline the mechanical performance limitations of an ankle-foot orthosis powered by artificial pneumatic muscles. This orthosis could be valuable for gait rehabilitation and for studies investigating neuromechanical control of human walking.  相似文献

The effect of skeletal muscle glycogen content on in situ glycogenolysis during short-term tetanic electrical stimulation was examined. Rats were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: normal (N, stimulated only), supercompensated (S, stimulated 21 h after a 3-h swim), and fasted (F, stimulated after a 20-h fast). Before stimulation, glycogen contents in the white (WG) and red gastrocnemius (RG) and soleus (SOL) muscles were increased by 13-25% in S and decreased by 15-27% in F compared with N. Hindlimb blood flow was occluded 60 s before stimulation to produce a predominantly anaerobic environment. Muscles were stimulated with trains of supramaximal impulses (100 ms at 80 Hz) at a rate of 1 Hz for 60 s. Muscle glycogenolysis was measured from the decrease in glycogen content and estimated from the accumulation of glycolytic intermediates in the closed system. The resting glycogen content had no effect on measured or estimated glycogenolysis in all muscles studied. Average glycogenolysis in the WG, RG, and SOL muscles was 98.4 +/- 4.3, 60.9 +/- 4.0, and 11.2 +/- 3.6 mumol glucosyl U/g dry muscle, respectively. Hindlimb tension production was similar across conditions. The results suggest that in vivo glycogen phosphorylase activity in skeletal muscle is not regulated by the content of its substrate glycogen (range 80-165 mumol/g) during short-term tetanic stimulation in an anaerobic environment.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate disuse atrophy of skeletal muscle using a hind-limb suspension model, with special reference to energy metabolism. Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: control group (C), hind-limb suspended for 3 days (HS-3), for 7 days (HS-7) and for 14 days (HS-14). The gastrocnemius-plantaris-soleus (GPS) muscles in each group were subjected to the following measurements. After a 2-min rest, contraction of the GPS muscles was induced by electrical stimulation of the sciatic nerve at 0.25 Hz for 10 min, then the frequency was increased to 0.5 and 1.0 Hz every 10 min. During the stimulation, twitch forces were recorded by a strain gauge, and 31P-MRS was performed simultaneously. Maximum tension was measured at the muscle contraction induced at 0.25 Hz; the wet weight of the whole and each muscle in the GPS muscles was also measured. From the 31P-MR spectra during muscle contraction, the oxidative capacity was calculated and compared among the groups. The weights of the whole GPS muscles in C, HS-3, HS-7 and HS-14, were 2.66 +/- 0.09, 2.39 +/- 0.21, 2.34 +/- 0.21 and 2.18 +/- 0.14 (g) respectively. Thus, the muscle mass significantly decreased with time (p < 0.05). Among the GPS muscles, the decrease in weight of the soleus muscle was especially remarkable; in the HS-14 group its weight decreased to 60% of that in the C group. We evaluated maximum tension and oxidative capacity as the muscle function. The maximum tensions in C, HS-3, HS-7 and HS-14 were 519 +/- 43, 446 +/- 66, 450 +/- 23 and 465 +/- 29 (g), respectively. This was significantly greater in the C group than in any other groups, however there were no significant differences among the three HS groups. The oxidative capacity during muscle contraction in the C group was higher than in any HS group and it did not further decrease even if the suspension of the limbs was prolonged beyond 3 days. The present study showed that in disuse atrophy, muscle mass and muscle function did not change simultaneously. Thus, it is necessary to develop countermeasures to prevent muscle atrophy and muscle function deterioration independently.  相似文献

The maximum stresses to which a wide range of mammalian limb tendons could be subjected in life were estimated by considering the relative cross-sectional areas of each tendon and of the fibres of its muscle. These cross-sectional areas were derived from mass and length measurements on tendons and muscles assuming published values for the respective densities. The majority of the stresses are low. The distribution has a broad peak with maximum frequency at a stress of about 13 MPa, whereas the fracture stress for tendon in tension is about 100 MPa. Thus, the majority of tendons are far thicker than is necessary for adequate strength. Much higher stresses are found among those tendons which act as springs to store energy during locomotion. The acceptability of low safety factors in these tendons has been explained previously (Alexander, 1981). A new theory explains the thickness of the majority of tendons. The muscle with its tendon is considered as a combined system which delivers mechanical energy: the thickness of the tendon is optimized by minimizing the combined mass. A thinner tendon would stretch more. To take up this stretch, the muscle would require longer muscle fibres, which would increase the combined mass. The predicted maximum stress in a tendon of optimum thickness is about 10 MPa, which is within the main peak of the observed stress distribution. Individual variations from this value are to be expected and can be understood in terms of the functions of the various muscles.  相似文献

Stress analysis in the individual parts of the scapula under normal physiological conditions is necessary to understand the load transfer mechanism, its relation with morphology of bone and to analyse the deviations in stress patterns due to implantation of the glenoid. The purpose of this study was to obtain stress distribution in the scapula during abduction of the arm and to obtain a qualitative estimate of the function of coracoacromial ligament. An accurate three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model of the natural scapula has been developed for this purpose, using computed tomography data and shell-solid modelling approach. The model was experimentally validated. A musculoskeletal shoulder model of forces that calculates all muscle, ligament and joint reaction forces, in six load cases (30-180 degrees) during unloaded humeral abduction was used as applied loading conditions for the 3D FE model. High tensile and compressive stresses (15-60 MPa) were generated in the thick bony ridges of the scapula, like the scapular spine, lateral border, glenoid and acromion. High compressive stresses (45-58 MPa) were evoked in the glenoid and at the connection of glenoid-scapular spine-infraspinous fossa. The stresses in the infraspinous fossa and supraspinous fossa were low (0.05-15 MPa). These results indicated that the transfer of major muscle and joint reaction take place predominantly through the thick bony ridges, whereas the fossa area act more as attachment sites of large muscles. During humeral abduction, coracoacromial ligament was stretched, and presumably will be under tension.  相似文献

Effects of a constant magnetic field (CMF) of 0.65 T on muscle tension over 9 h were studied in the neuromuscular preparation of the bullfrog sartorius muscle. Tension was developed every 30 min by stimulation of the sciatic nerve (nerve stimulation) or of the sartorius muscle itself (muscle stimulation). In sciatic nerve stimulation, tension decreased rapidly for the first 3-4 h at a similar rate in both test (exposed to CMF) and control muscles. However, the rate of decrease became smaller and almost leveled off after 3-4 h in the test muscles, whereas tension continued to decrease monotonically in control muscles. The slope of the decrease for these later periods was significantly different between the test and the control conditions. Accordingly, tension was larger in test than in control muscles. In muscle stimulation, tension decreased monotonically from the start of experiments in control muscles, while tension in test muscles maintained their initial values for almost 3 h. Thereafter they started to decrease with a similar rate to the control. Hence, tension was always larger in test than in control muscles. A similar pattern of temporal change was observed for the rate of rise of the maximum tension for nerve or muscle stimulation. However, a significant difference was detected only in the case of muscle stimulation. The present results showed that a strong CMF of 0.65 T had biological effects on tension development of the bullfrog sartorius muscle by stimulation of the sciatic nerve as well as by stimulation of muscle itself. The presence of a small AC magnetic field component leaves open the possibility of an AC, rather than a CMF effect.  相似文献

A novel technique is proposed to predict force reduction in skeletal muscle due to fatigue under the influence of electrical stimulus parameters and muscle physiological characteristics. Twelve New Zealand white rabbits were divided in four groups (\(n=3\)) to obtain the active force evolution of in vitro Extensor Digitorum Longus muscles for an hour of repeated contractions under different electrical stimulation patterns. Left and right muscles were tested, and a total of 24 samples were used to construct a response surface based in the proper generalized decomposition. After the response surface development, one additional rabbit was used to check the predictive potential of the technique. This multidimensional surface takes into account not only the decay of the maximum repeated peak force, but also the shape evolution of each contraction, muscle weight, electrical input signal and stimulation protocol. This new approach of the fatigue simulation challenge allows to predict, inside the multispace surface generated, the muscle response considering other stimulation patterns, different tissue weight, etc.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Electrical activity from individual mandibular closer muscle fibres of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria was monitored during three feeding conditions: chewing soft grass, chewing soft grass against an artificial load, and chewing an incompressible grass. Spiking frequency during bursts of activity was found to increase under conditions of increased artificial, and natural load. These increases in spiking frequency occurred over a frequency range much lower than that necessary to produce a maximal tetanic contraction, and therefore correspond to increases in power output by the closer muscles in response to increases in load. The increase in nuclear magnetic resonance transverse relaxation time (T(2)) of muscle water measured by magnetic resonance imaging after exercise has been correlated with work rate in human subjects. This study compared the T(2) increase in thigh muscles of trained (cycling VO(2 max) = 54.4 +/- 2.7 ml O(2). kg(-1). min(-1), mean +/- SE, n = 8, 4 female) vs. sedentary (31.7 +/- 0.9 ml O(2). kg(-1). min(-1), n = 8, 4 female) subjects after cycling exercise for 6 min at 50 and 90% of the subjects' individually determined VO(2 max). There was no significant difference between groups in the T(2) increase measured in quadriceps muscles within 3 min after the exercises, despite the fact that the absolute work rates were 60% higher in the trained group (253 +/- 15 vs. 159 +/- 21 W for the 90% exercise). In both groups, the increase in T(2) of vastus muscles was twofold greater after the 90% exercise than after the 50% exercise. The recovery of T(2) after the 90% exercise was significantly faster in vastus muscles of the trained compared with the sedentary group (mean recovery half-time 11.9 +/- 1.2 vs. 23.3 +/- 3.7 min). The results show that the increase in muscle T(2) varies with work rate relative to muscle maximum aerobic power, not with absolute work rate.  相似文献

After 3 wk of incrementallyapplied stretch the LD muscles were 36% heavier, but absolute poweroutput (195 mW/muscle) was not significantly changed relative to thatof external control muscle (206 mW). In contrast, continuous 10-Hzelectrical stimulation reduced power output per kilogram of muscle>75% after 3 or 6 wk and muscle mass by 32% after 6 wk. Whencombined, stretch and 10-Hz electrical stimulation preserved orincreased the mass of the treated muscles but failed to prevent an 80%loss in maximum muscle power. However, this combined treatmentincreased fatigue resistance to a greater degree than electricalstimulation alone. These stretched/stimulated muscles, therefore, aremore suitable for cardiomyoplasty. Nonetheless, further work will benecessary to find an ideal training program for this surgicalprocedure.

Recent work has employed video and sonometric analysis combined with hydrodynamic modeling to estimate power output by the feeding musculature of largemouth bass in feeding trials. The result was an estimate of approximately 69 W kg(-1) of power by the epaxial muscle during maximal feeding strikes. The present study employed in vitro measurements of force, work and power output by fast-twitch epaxial muscle bundles stimulated under activation conditions measured in vivo to evaluate the power output results of the feeding experiments. Isolated muscle bundles from the epaxial muscle, the sternohyoideus and the lateral red or slow-twitch muscle were tied into a muscle mechanics apparatus, and contractile properties during tetanic contractions and maximum shortening velocity (Vmax) were determined. For the epaxial muscles, work and power output during feeding events was determined by employing mean stimulation conditions derived from a select set of maximal feeding trials: 17% muscle shortening at 3.6 muscle lengths/s, with activation occurring 5 ms before the onset of shortening. Epaxial and sternohyoideus muscle displayed similar contractile properties, and both were considerably faster (Vmax approximately 11-13 ML s(-1)) than red muscle (Vmax approximately 5 ML s(-1)). Epaxial muscle stimulated under in vivo activation conditions generated approximately 60 W kg(-1) with a 17% strain and approximately 86 W kg(-1) with a 12% strain. These values are close to those estimated by hydrodynamic modeling. The short lag time (5 ms) between muscle activation and muscle shortening is apparently a limiting parameter during feeding strikes, with maximum power found at an offset of 15-20 ms. Further, feeding strikes employing a faster shortening velocity generated significantly higher power output. Power production during feeding strikes appears to be limited by the need for fast onset of movement and the hydrodynamic resistance to buccal expansion.  相似文献
