Lepidopteran pest populations and crop yields in row intercropped broccoli   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract
  • 1 To determine how the presence of non‐host plants impact populations of lepidopteran pests and yield of broccoli, Brassica oleracea var. italica L., broccoli was intercropped with tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum Miller, or yellow sweetclover (YSC), Melilotus officinalis L., and compared with broccoli monoculture grown at two densities (high and low).
  • 2 During a 1997 study, numbers of early instar imported cabbageworm, Artogeia rapae L., were greater in broccoli monoculture compared with intercropped plantings. In contrast, late instar A. rapae numbers were significantly higher in intercropped broccoli during most of the season, indicating greater survival of early instar stages in intercropped habitats.
  • 3 Cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni Hübner, eggs and larvae were more abundant in broccoli monoculture than intercropped broccoli in 1997. In addition, T. ni populations were found at significantly lower levels in broccoli‐YSC compared with broccoli‐tomato habitat throughout the season.
  • 4 During a 1998 study, numbers of early and late A. rapae instars were greater in intercropped broccoli on most sampling dates.
  • 5 The mean percentages of harvested broccoli heads infested with insects and associated frass were higher in monocultures than intercropped treatments in 1997. Additionally, a significantly lower number of contaminants were found in the crowns of broccoli harvested from broccoli‐YSC (YSC) compared with broccoli‐tomato (tomato) habitat. However, broccoli heads were significantly smaller in intercropped habitats.
  • 6 Variations in insect responses and challenges to using crop diversification as a management tool are discussed.

The impact of host age on the number of hosts killed, survival of progeny, progeny allocation, and sex allocation was examined for several Trichogrammatidae (Hymenoptera) species in laboratory choice tests. Individual female parasitoids were provided with young, medium-aged and old eggs of one of three lepidopterous host species: Trichoplusia ni (Hübner) (Noctuidae), Pieris rapae (L.) (Pieridae), or Plutella xylostella (L.) (Plutellidae). Trichogrammatid species behaved as gregarious parasitoids with the first two host species, and as solitary parasitoids with eggs of the smaller latter one. They mostly preferred young eggs of T. ni, but did not discriminate among P. rapae eggs of different ages, and often preferred young or medium-aged P. xylostella eggs over old eggs. Survival of progeny did not vary constantly with host age, although it was often very low in P. rapae eggs of any age. Clutch size frequently decreased with host age in both T. ni and P. rapae. Offspring sex ratio did not change with age of T. ni and P. rapae eggs, and rarely did so in P. xylostella eggs. In regard to host age, the results with T. ni are the ones which are the most in agreement with optimal foraging theoretical predictions, as clutch size was the highest in preferred younger eggs.  相似文献

We assessed the potential of annual buckwheat, Fagopyrum esculentum Moench, to lead to improved parasitism of lepidopteran cabbage pests over four years. Pest, parasitism, and hyperparasitism rates were monitored in replicated cabbage plots (12 × 20 m) with or without 3 m wide buckwheat borders from 2000 to 2003. Floral borders did not significantly increase egg, larval, or pupal densities of cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni (Hübner), imported cabbageworm, Pieris rapae (L.), or diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.). Buckwheat increased parasitism rates by Voria ruralis (Fallen) on T. ni larvae and Cotesia rubecula (Marshall) on P. rapaelarvae over four years. Parasitism by Diadegma insulare (Cresson) on P. xylostella larvae was higher in buckwheat than control plots in the first year, and parasitism by Euplectrus plathypenae (Howard) on T. ni larvae was lower in buckwheat than control plots in the second year. The hyperparasitoid Conura side (Walker) attacked D. insulare all four years, but buckwheat did not affect hyperparasitism rates. The effect of spatial scale on pest densities and parasitism in 2001 was evaluated by comparing plots separated at least 67 m (nearby) versus 800 m apart (isolated). T. ni pupae and P. rapae eggs and pupae were more abundant in plots in closer proximity, whereas P. xylostella densities did not vary by the spatial separation of plots. Tachinids and Pteromalus puparum (L.) attacked more P. rapae in nearby plots. E. plathypenae responded to the treatment × scale interaction, parasitizing more in control than buckwheat when plots were isolated but not when plots were nearby.  相似文献

Parasitism of the cabbage root fly, Delia radicum (L.) by the staphylinid Aleochara bilineata Gyllenhal and the cynipid Trybliographa rapae Westwood was examined in a cabbage monoculture and a mixed stand of cabbage undersown with white clover. Number of overwintering cabbage root fly pupae per plant was consistently reduced in the mixed stand, and the incidence of plants attacked by cabbage root fly was either reduced or not different in the mixed stand compared to cabbage monoculture. For both parasitoids, the probability of D. radicum attacked plants having at least one parasitized pupa increased with density of cabbage root fly pupae around the plant. For A. bilineata, this positive relation between presence of parasitism and host density was consistently stronger in cabbage monoculture than in cabbage undersown with clover. Location of a host plant by T. rapae was not consistently affected by the presence of clover. D. radicum attacked plants situated in the cabbage and clover mixture were found by T. rapae as easily as in cabbage monoculture. Overall, the total risk of parasitism for a cabbage root fly pupa by A. bilineata was reduced in the mixed stand compared to the cabbage monoculture, whereas the risk of parasitism by T. rapae was not consistently affected by clover. For both parasitoids, intensity of parasitism showed a variable relationship with host density on individual plants attacked by the cabbage root fly. Overall, in spite of consistently lower total density of pupae in the mixed cabbage—clover than in cabbage monoculture, the density of unparasitized pupae was reduced by the presence of non-host plants only in two of the four experiments. The results emphasize the need to include not only herbivore and crop, but also other plant species as well as natural enemies when evaluating management methods.  相似文献

The impacts of interplanting broccoli, Brassica oleracea var. italica L., with chili pepper, Capsicum annuum L., or yellow sweetclover (YSC), Melilotus officinalis L., on broccoli growth parameters and levels of lepidopteran head infestations were studied during two field seasons (winter & summer). During both seasons, several broccoli growth characteristics (e.g. plant vertical area, whole plant biomass, etc.) were significantly reduced in broccoli‐YSC habitats. However, broccoli heads in broccoli‐YSC habitats did not differ significantly in size from other treatment habitats. Additionally, these heads contained the lowest mean lepidopteran contaminants per broccoli crown during the winter season. During this period, the average number of lepidopteran contaminants per broccoli head was more than twice that in monoculture and pepper intercropped broccoli than in broccoli‐YSC habitats. During the summer experiment, the average number of lepidopteran contaminants per broccoli head was greater in pepper intercropped broccoli than in both monoculture and YSC interplanted broccoli. Potential causes of broccoli growth differences and their relationship to lepidopteran ovipositional behavior are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The capacity of two Trichoplusia ni (TN-368 and BTI-Tn-5bl-4) and a Spodoptera frugiperda (IPLB-SF-21A) cell lines to glycosylate recombinant, baculovirus-encoded, secreted, placental alkaline phosphatase was compared. The alkaline phosphatase from serum-containing, cell culture medium was purified by phosphate affinity column chromatography. The N-linked oligosaccharides were released from the purified protein with PNGase F and analyzed by fluorophore-assisted carbohydrate electrophoresis. The majority of oligosaccharide structures produced by the three cell lines contained two or three mannose residues, with and without core fucosylation, but there were structures containing up to seven mannose residues. The oligosaccharides that were qualitatively or quantitatively different between the cell lines were sequenced with glycosidase digestions. The S. frugiperda cells produced more fucosylated oligosaccharides than either of the T. ni cell lines. The smallest oligosaccharide produced by S. frugiperda cells was branched trimannose. In contrast, both T. ni cell lines produced predominantly dimannose and linear trimannose structures devoid of α 1–3-linked mannose.  相似文献

The yeast extract (of unknown origin) present in the commercially available serum-free medium ‘Express Five’ contains factors (‘yeast extract factors’) up to 35 kDa which are essential for growth of Trichoplusia ni insect cells. A yeast extract brand lacking these components could not support growth of T. ni cells. However, cell proliferation was restored by adding chromatographic fractions containing the yeast extract factors. The yeast extract factors were not solely responsible for the growth enhancing effect of yeast extract but some other components, which seem to be generally present in yeast extracts, are also required for T. ni proliferation.  相似文献

The effects of different nitrogen (N) fertilization rates (0, 45, 90, and 168 kg N/ha), plant nitrogen concentration, and plant biomass on abundance and population growth of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni (Hübner), cabbage budworm, Hellula phidilealis (Walker), imported cabbageworm, Artogeia rapae (L.), and cross-striped cabbageworm, Evergestis rimosalis (Guenée), were investigated in Homestead and Sanford, Florida in 1987. The effects of these factors on the parasitization of P. xylostella were also examined. In Homestead, abundance of most insect pests and parasitized P. xylostella increased with an increase in the level of N applied and with an increase in plant biomass. Similar results were found in Sanford, although results were not consistently significant. Abundance of most insect pests was significantly positively correlated with plant N concentration. Multiple regression analyses indicated that foliar biomass was significantly more important than N fertilization rate and subsequent plant N concentration at predicting abundance of insect pests and parasitized P. xylostella on cabbage.  相似文献

We investigated the role of experience with several antifeedants on the feeding behavior of a generalist herbivore, Trichoplusia ni. Second-, third-, and fifth-instar larvae of T. ni were examined for their feeding responses to plant extracts (Melia volkensii, Origanum vulgare) and individual plant allelochemicals (cymarin, digitoxin, xanthotoxin, toosendanin, and thymol), after being exposed to them continually beginning as neonates. All tested instars of T. ni were capable of showing a decreased antifeedant response following prolonged exposure to most of the antifeedants tested compared with their naive conspecifics. Cardenolides (digitoxin and cymarin) were the exceptions. The response to oregano was affected as a result of previous exposure to different concentrations of oregano, unlike M. volkensii, leading us to conclude that T. ni sensitivity varies between stimuli and cannot be generalized. To demonstrate that decreased deterrence following prolonged exposure to M. volkensii was the result of learned habituation, three aversive stimuli were used. A high concentration of the particular antifeedant, xanthotoxin, acted as a noxious stimulus and dishabituated (reversed) the decrement in the antifeedant response to M. volkensii. Cold shock or CO2 was marginally effective in dishabituating the response. The fact that the decrease in antifeedant response can be dishabituated has implications for pest management.  相似文献

The vertical positioning of benthic invertebrates should be a trade-off between the risky, but productive, sediment surface and the safer, but physiologically harsher, conditions deeper down in the sediment. This is because the foraging efficiency of benthic fish decreases with sediment depth, whereas the sediment surface is generally better oxygenated and has a higher resource quality than lower layers. We studied how two benthic fish predators, bream (Abramis brama) and ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus), affected the community composition and vertical distribution of benthos, and their indirect effects on algae and suspended material, in field enclosures. Whereas bream had significant effects on the density, composition and distribution of the benthos, ruffe had no such effects. The total benthos biomass in bream treatments was an-order of magnitude lower in the upper sediment layer (0–1 cm) and three times lower in the middle layer (1–3 cm) than in the controls, whereas there were no significant effects in the deepest layer (3–10 cm). Bivalves persisted in the deepest layer although their density was reduced in shallow sediment, whereas gastropods faced the risk of local extinction in the presence of bream. As indirect effects, small-bodied cladocerans, phytoplankton, periphyton and both organic and inorganic suspended material were higher in the bream treatments. We␣conclude that the impact of bream diminished substantially with increasing sediment depth, enabling invertebrates to survive in the sediment and to persist in the presence of bream. However, there were␣no␣indications of any group adjusting their vertical position behaviourally as a response to predation threat.  相似文献

S-ethyldipropylthiocarbamate (EPTC) applied as a soil treatment or over-the-top spray on cabbage plants (Brassica oleracea L.) caused the leaves to turn ‘glossy’ for as long as 30 days. EPTC-induced glossy plants were damaged significantly less than untreated plants by diamondback moth,Plutella xylostella (L.), imported cabbage worm,Pieris rapae (L.), and cabbage looper,Trichoplusia ni (Hbn.). Reductions in damage were equivalent to those obtained from treatment with permethrin. When used in combination with permethrin, EPTC provided additive control of damage by these pests. Our calculations show EPTC-induced resistance to be cost-effective. This use of EPTC has several limitations, however. Younger plants (<9 leaves) were killed or injured by the herbicide. The growth of older plants was not affected, but plants did not become glossy for ca. 10 days after they were treated with EPTC. The crop must be protected with insecticides until the plants are mature enough to treat with EPTC, and until treated plants become glossy. In addition, since the glossy trait is only effective against first instar larvae, populations of later instars on glossy plants must be reduced with an application of insecticide. Finally, EPTC formulations are water-soluble and can be washed away from the plants by heavy rains and irrigation, which may make this use of EPTC impractical in some situations. Where its use is practical, and the indicated precautions are taken, EPTC-induced resistance could reduce dependence on chemical insecticides and reduce selection for insecticide resistance in diamondback moth.  相似文献

Prey utilization by the generalist predator Coleomegilla maculata lengi Timb. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) of three sympatric lepidopterous species was quantified in relation with prey size (age) and prey species. Based on optimal foraging theory, we argued that costs associated with the utilization of small and large prey are higher than those of intermediate prey size. As a result, we expected a higher prey consumption rate on intermediate prey size leading to a convex prey consumption curve. Laboratory experiments showed that, within a given prey instar, Coleomegilla maculata lengi preyed more on Plutella xylostella (L.) compared to Artogeia rapae (L.) and Trichoplusia ni (Hübner). Generally, prey consumption rate by Coleomegilla maculata lengi on the three prey species decreased with increasing immature prey size (age). The predation efficacy of Coleomegilla maculata lengi adults and fourth instar larvae was higher compared to younger coccinellids (L2). Although, Coleomegilla maculata lengi showed a higher level of predation on smaller immature prey, we demonstrated that it is not the optimal size range for this predator. As predicted, prey weight consumption rate by Coleomegilla maculata lengi was higher at intermediate prey size leading to a convex prey utilization curve. The beneficial impact of Coleomegilla maculata lengi predation on the host plant was also estimated by using a Protection Index that considers the differential predation caused by the coccinellids and the relative importance of each pest species in terms of plant injury. Coleomegilla maculata lengi has a more significant beneficial impact when it preys on T. ni immatures.  相似文献

Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii and C. gattii were repeatedly isolated from decaying wood of trunk hollows in living trees growing in Jabalpur City in Central India. The isolation of C.␣gattii has been reported from decayed wood inside trunk hollow of Tamarindus indica (15.6%), Mangifera indica (2.2%), Pithecolobium dulce (12.5%), Syzygium cumini (14%), and one from bark of S.␣cumini. C. n. var. grubii was isolated from decaying wood debris of T. indica (4.4%), M. indica (13.3%), Terminalia arjuna (25%), S. cumini (2%), Cassia fistula (4.5%), and two from bark of S. cumini. The two varieties never co-occurred in the same hollow. C. gattii and C. n. var. grubii isolates belonged to serotype B and serotype A respectively. The data strongly supported the colonization of the pathogen in␣decaying wood hollow of all six-tree species. Evidence of this was found by repeated isolation up to 820 days. P. dulce is being reported for the first time as natural habitat of C. gattii and T.␣arjuna and C. fistula as natural habitat for C. n. var. grubii. M. indica is being reported for the second time as the natural habitat of both varieties (C. n. var. grubii and C. gattii). The population density of these pathogens from decaying wood debris of various tree species ranged between 0.5 × 103 cells/g and 6 × 105 cells/g. The seasonal variation has been seen in isolation of this yeast. Our result further reinforce the recently emerging evidence that the natural habitat of C. n. var. grubii and C. gattii is more generalized.  相似文献

Two ecologically and morphologically distinct forms of Furcellaria lumbricalis and loose form of Coccotylus truncatus were experimentally tested to obtain information on the growth rates and influence of the habitat depth on their eco-physiological activity. Incubations were carried out in the area inhabited by a loose F. lumbricalisC. truncatus community in Kassari Bay of the West-Estonian Archipelago Sea, the NE Baltic Sea. During the incubation period (20.04–21.10.2002) loose forms of F. lumbricalis and C. truncatus showed similar dynamics of both growth rate of biomass and primary production while attached form of F.␣lumbricalis had, as a rule, significantly lower growth rate and primary production values. The highest eco-physiological activity was recorded from the shallowest incubation depth (4 m) for all three algal forms. All three tested algal forms had similar pattern of growth during the incubation period – highest growth rates were detected in spring and early summer while during the rest of the incubation period algal biomass was in a steady state when production balanced degradation processes.  相似文献

Plant-derived extracts and phytochemicals have long been a subject of research in an effort to develop alternatives to conventional insecticides but with reduced health and environmental impacts. In this review we compare the bioactivities of some plant extracts with those of commercially available botanical insecticides against two important agricultural pests, the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni and the armyworm, Pseudaletia unipuncta. Test materials included extracts of Azadirachta indica (neem), A. excelsa (sentang), Melia volkensii, M. azedarach (Chinaberry) and Trichilia americana, (all belonging to the family Meliaceae) along with commercial botanical insecticides ryania, pyrethrum, rotenone and essential oils of rosemary and clove leaf. Most of the extracts and botanicals tested proved to be strong growth inhibitors, contact toxins and significant feeding deterrents to both lepidopteran species. However, there were interspecific differences with T. ni generally more susceptible to the botanicals than the armyworm, P. unipuncta. All botanicals were more inhibitory to growth and toxic (through feeding) to T. ni than to P. unipuncta, except for M. azedarach which was more toxic to P. unipuncta than to T. ni. Athough, pyrethrum was the most toxic botanical to both noctuids, A. indica, A. excelsa, and M. volkensii were more toxic than ryania, rotenone, clove oil and rosemary oil for T. ni. As feeding deterrents, pyrethrum was the most potent against T. ni, whereas A. indica was the most potent against the armyworm. Based upon growth inhibition, chronic toxicity, and antifeedant activity, some of these plant extracts have levels of activity that compare favorably to botanical products currently in commercial use and have potential for development as commercial insecticides.  相似文献

Summary The production of recombinant secreted alkaline phosphatase protein in virally infected insect cells was studied in shaker flask and high aspect rotating-wall vessel (HARV) culture. Two commonly used cell lines, Spodoptera frugiperda Sf-9 (Sf-9) and a nonaggregating isolate of the Trichoplusia ni BTI-Tn-5B1-4 (Tn-5B1-4) cell line, Trichoplusia ni Tn-5B1-4-NA (TN-5B1-4-NA), were used and monitored for 120-h postinfection. Different responses to culture in the HARV were seen in the two cell lines. While the Sf-9 cell line was able to produce slightly greater amounts of recombinant protein in the HARV than in shaker flask controls, the Tn-5B1-4-NA cell line produced significantly lesser amounts in the HARV than in the shaker flasks. Both cell lines exhibited longer life spans and longer periods of protein production in HARV culture than in shaker flask culture, presumably due to lower levels of shear encountered in the HARV. The important difference was in the protein production rate responses of the two cell lines. While the protein production rates of Sf-9 cells were comparable in both HARV and shaker flask cultures, the protein production rates of Tn-5B1-4-NA cells were much lower in HARV culture than in shaker flask cultures. The conclusion is drawn that cell line-specific adaptation to the HARV strongly influences recombinant protein production.  相似文献

Diterpenoid alkaloids are compounds of pharmacological interest. Forty four C19 norditerpenoid (NDAs) and 23 C20 diterpenoid (DAs) alkaloids isolated from Aconitum, Delphinium and Consolida species were tested for their insecticidal effects (antifeedant and toxic) on Spodoptera littoralis and Leptinotarsa decemlineata, their cytotoxicity on tumoral cell lines with several multidrug resistance mechanisms, and their antiparasitic effects against Trypanososma cruzi and Leishmania infantum. Overall, C19 norditerpene alkaloids (NDAs) resulted better insect antifeedants and post-ingestive toxicants than the related C20 diterpene alkaloids (DAs). Their antifeedant or insecticidal potencies did not parallel their reported nAChR binding activity, but did correlate␣with the␣agonist/antagonist insecticidal/ antifeedant model proposed for nicotininc insecticides.␣Among the most potent antifeedants (EC50 < 0.2 μg/cm2) are␣the NDAs 1,14 diacetylcardiopetaline (10),␣18-hydroxy-14-O-methylgadesine (34) and 14-O-acetyldelectinine (28) (to CPB) and the DA 19-oxodihydroatisine (55) (to S.␣littoralis). DAs had strong antiparasitic effects with molecular selectivity while NDAs were inactive. Delphigraciline (53), 15,22-O-Diacetyl-19-oxo-dihydroatisine (56), azitine (64) and isoazitine (65) were active against L. infantum promastigotes and had a moderate effect on T. cruzi epimastigotes, while atisinium chloride (59) and 13-oxocardiopetamine (48) had a potent effect on T. cruzi epimastigotes. These compounds were not toxic to the host cell, significantly reduced parasite infection capacity and severely affected the multiplication of their extracellular forms. Several NDAs exhibited selective cytotoxicity to cancerous cells and some of these had irreversible effects on SW480, HeLa and SkMel25 cell lines (neoline 5, pubescenine 16, 14-deacetylajadine 26, lycoctonine 27, dehydrotakaosamine 35, and ajadelphinine 38). These cytotoxic effects could be related to the inhibition of ATP production.  相似文献

TwoApium graveolens var.rapaceum (L.) cultivars that differ in their suitability for the survival and growth ofSpodoptera exigua (Hübner) andTrichoplusia ni (Hübner) were used to examine the effect of genetic and seasonal environmental variation in host plant suitability on the efficacy ofBacillus thuringiensis subsp.kurstaki (Berliner). The effects of host plant genotype andB. thuringiensis were generally independent, so thatB. thuringiensis efficacy was greatest on the resistant host plant cultivar. Host plant suitability varied within growing season for both insect species but, while host plant suitability decreased with increasing plant age forT. ni, the response ofS. exigua to plant age was not as clear. Within season variation in host plant suitability affectedB. thuringiensis efficacy and the interaction betweenB. thuringiensis and host plant cultivar forS. exigua but not forT. ni. Soluble protein and Folin-Denis phenolic concentrations of host plant tissue were not correlated with changes in host plant suitability to either insect species.  相似文献

In previous work, cabbage loopers (Trichoplusia ni) evolved 22-fold resistance to the single nucleocapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus of T. ni (TnSNPV) after 26 generations of selection with the virus. The goal of the present study was to determine if T. ni could evolve resistance to the recombinant Autographa californica multiple nucleocapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV-AaIT) that expresses an insect specific neurotoxin and to determine if it was influenced by prior development of resistance to TnSNPV. To answer these questions, the T. ni line that had been exposed to TnSNPV was divided into two sublines at generation 27. One of them was serially selected for resistance to AcMNPV-AaIT (subline TnSNPV/AcMNPV-AaIT), while the other one was mock infected with distilled water (subline TnSNPV/H2O). The same was done with the line that was used as a control from generations 1 to 26 (subline H2O/AcMNPV-AaIT and subline H2O/H2O). After 17 generations of selection with AcMNPV-AaIT, T. ni that had not been previously exposed to TnSNPV evolved only twofold resistance to AcMNPV-AaIT. However, those that had been selected with TnSNPV evolved fourfold resistance to AcMNPV-AaIT. Exposure to AcMNPV-AaIT conferred cross-resistance to TnSNPV in only one subline, subline H2O/AcMNPV-AaIT. Resistance to AcMNPV-AaIT did not affect the developmental time, pupal weight, egg production, or percentage of egg hatch of T. ni.  相似文献

Baculovirus, Spodoptera litura granulovirus (SlGV) was isolated from the infected S. litura larvae, and was characterized. The granule of SlGV was ovoidal shape with an approximate size of 240∼340 nm× 140∼180 nm. Each granule contained one single rod-shape virion with a mean size of 180∼200 nm×20∼40 nm. Restriction endonuclease fragment analysis estimated that the total genome size of SlGV is about 115 kb. Necleotide sequence analysis of the granulin gene showed that the gene encodes 249 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of 29 kDa. When the phylogenic relationship was analyzed using the nucleotide sequence of the granulin gene, SlGV was most closely related to Trichoplusia ni granulovirus (TnGV) and Xestia c-nigrum granulovirus (XcGV) which belong to Type I granulovirus.  相似文献
