Hazard evaluation of different heavy metal exposure on the crops cultivated around two abandoned metal mine sites was conducted. Bioconcentration Factor (BCF) of nine heavy metals including Cu, Cd, Hg, As, Cr, Zn, Pb, Mn, and Al in the samples of brown rice cultivated at exposed soil were measured. Soil-plant BCF was measured and compared with Korean and US EPA standards. BCF values of analyzed heavy metals except Hg and As were below the limits. BCF of Hg was over 5 times higher than the standard limit. Excess cancer risk (ECR) and hazard quotient (HQ) values of As was higher than the limit and suggested to have carcinogenic as well as non-carcinogenic threat to the public exposed to the sites. The data presented could be utilized in prioritizing abandoned metal mine sites for health effect survey.  相似文献

Heavy metals in soil can affect human health through the exposure pathways of oral ingestion, dermal contact, and inhalation. In this study, to assess the health risk of heavy metals in the agricultural area of Xinglonggang, 52 soil samples were collected and tested to obtain the concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn in the soil. The enrichment factor indicated that the heavy metals of the agricultural soils were enriched, but the degree of enrichment was mild for all of the heavy metals. Coefficient analysis and principal component analysis indicated that V, Cr, Ni, and Pb were mainly from natural sources, As was from irrigation, Cu and Cd tended to be from chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and Zn was from mixed sources including irrigation, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides. A human-health risk assessment indicated that the residents in the study area face high risk from carcinogens and low risk from noncarcinogens; As and Cr are the major heavy metals affecting human health. This study provides a reference and a basis for formulating effective measures to prevent and control heavy metal enrichment in agricultural soils.  相似文献

Risk characterization of agricultural soils in the mining areas of Singhbhum copper belt was done by determining the total concentrations of metals using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and assessing the potential ecological and human health risks. The concentrations were above the average shale values for most of the metals. Principal component analysis showed anthropogenic contributions of Cu, Ni, Co, Mn, Pb, and Cr in the soils. Ecological risk assessment revealed that 50% of the soil samples were at moderate to very high ecological risk. Health risks for adults and children were calculated using hazard quotients (HQs), hazard index (HI), and Cancer risks for the oral, dermal, and inhalation pathways. The HQs for all the metals except As and Co were below 1, which suggested that non-carcinogenic risks due to metal exposure through soils were within the safe limit. However, considering all the metals and pathways, the HI for adults and children was 0.71 and 5.61, respectively, suggesting appreciable risk to local residents. The carcinogenic risks due to As and Cr in the soils were within the acceptable value of 1E–04. For both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks, oral ingestion appeared to be the primary pathway followed by dermal and inhalation pathways.  相似文献

The threat of metal contamination of roadside agricultural soils poses severe ecological risks throughout the globe due to dual contamination by intensive agriculture and traffic-related activities. Therefore, the present study was conducted to assess ecological risks posed by metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn) in intensively cultivated roadside agricultural soils of Punjab, India. The results of the contamination assessment factors i.e. Contamination Factor (CF) and Enrichment Factor (EF) indicated that the studied soils were moderately to highly contaminated with metals. It was observed that the Modified Risk Index (MRI), which is based upon EF, indicated the ecological risks of metals more efficiently than the traditional Ecological Risk Index (RI), which is based upon CF in the present study. The MRI values indicated that the metals posed considerable to high risk in 67.86% samples as compared to only 7.14% samples based upon RI values. Thus, MRI can be considered as a more efficient risk indicator in comparison to RI. Spatial distribution maps of MRI indicated to higher metal contamination in inner urban parts of study area due to higher traffic and industrial activities.  相似文献

In recent years, heavy metal pollution accidents have occurred in many regions of China, and the public has become increasingly concerned about its health. Based on a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency model and using Monte Carlo simulation techniques, this article presents a procedure for health risk assessment of heavy metal pollution. A case study was conducted in the Qixia lead and zinc mining area. Based on the magnitude of heavy metal contamination in the mine factory, vicinal Qixia scenic site and village, the potential health risk calculated for a lifetime of exposure (through ingestion and dermal contact) was determined as the cumulative carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk for workers, tourists, and local residents (including children and adults), respectively. The risk assessment indicated that the carcinogenic risk is not significant. However, Pb poses a significant cumulative non-carcinogenic risk, which tends to be serious for workers. Additionally, local children are more vulnerable than adults to the risks associated with heavy metal contamination. Accordingly, risk alleviation and preventive measures should be taken, especially for children and workers.  相似文献

Abstract

To understand distribution, toxicity, and health risk assessment of Cu, Ni, Cr, Pb, Zn, Fe, and Mn, 33 surface dust samples were collected during June 2015 from Bhiwadi Industrial Area (BIA) in north India. Average metal concentrations exceeded their corresponding values in upper continental crust depending upon metal(s) and sampling site(s). Industrial emissions resulted in high contamination factors and high pollution load index for metals. The BIA falls under least to moderately for Mn, unpolluted to heavily and extremely for Ni and Cu, Pb, and Zn and moderately to extremely polluted region for Cr. Inter-metal correlations and PCA indicated common and mixed sources for metals such Ni–Cr electroplating and alloys, battery recycling, stainless-steel, electrical wires, galvanizing, vehicular emissions, and wear and tear of vehicle parts. Non-carcinogenic health risk due to metals in surface dust was high in children compared to adults and major pathways were ingestion followed by dermal and inhalation. Surface dust in BIA falls under hazardous category as metals leached in toxicity characteristics leaching procedure and waste extraction test exceeded their prescribed regulatory limits. Leaching of metals can cause contamination of surface water, groundwater, and soils in surrounding areas, and can pose risk to human health and ecology.  相似文献

A total of 32 road dust samples were collected from mining areas and a control area in Nandan County, Guangxi, in order to investigate the contamination characteristics of heavy metals and associated health risks to local residents. The results indicated that elevated concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Sb, and Zn were found in road dust in mining areas compared with control areas and background values. Pearson's correlation analysis and principal component analysis indicated that As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Sb, and Zn in road dust mainly originated from anthropogenic sources (e.g., vehicles emission, mining activities, and smelting activities), whereas Cr, Co, and Ni were associated with natural sources (e.g., soil weathering). Furthermore, noncarcinogenic hazards to both adults and children were found in mining areas, while noncarcinogenic health risks in the control area were negligible. The health hazard was mostly ascribed to the ingestion, followed by the dermal contact, and the inhalation. The cancer risks from As, Cd, Co, Cr, and Ni in all studied areas were within safe levels as the R values were below the threshold of 1 × 10?6.  相似文献

Heavy metal pollution is becoming a serious issue in developing countries such as China, and the public is increasingly aware of its adverse health impacts in recent years. We assessed the potential health risks in a lead-zinc mining area and attempted to identify the key exposure pathways. We evaluated the spatial distributions of personal exposure using indigenous exposure factors and field monitoring results of water, soil, food, and indoor and outdoor air samples. The risks posed by 10 metals and the contribution of inhalation, ingestion and dermal contact pathways to these risks were estimated. Human hair samples were also analyzed to indicate the exposure level in the human body. Our results show that heavy metal pollution may pose high potential health risks to local residents, especially in the village closest to the mine (V1), mainly due to Pb, Cd and Hg. Correspondingly, the residents in V1 had higher Pb (8.14 mg/kg) levels in hair than those in the other two villages. Most of the estimated risks came from soil, the intake of self-produced vegetables and indoor air inhalation. This study highlights the importance of site-specific multipathway health risk assessments in studying heavy-metal exposures in China.  相似文献

Heavy metal speciation and the associated ecological risks were investigated, using a European Community Bureau of Reference sequential extraction procedure, in sediments from the residential, mixed (residential and industrial), and agricultural areas of rural rivers in southern Jiangsu Province, China. Compared with the background values in Jiangsu Province soils, Cd was the metal with the highest contamination level, especially in the mixed area, followed by Cu and Zn. In the sediment samples from the agricultural area, the heavy metal concentrations were no more than two times greater than the background values. There were higher proportions of Cd in the acid-soluble fraction, Cr in the residual fraction, and Pb in the reducible fraction in the three areas. The heavy metal mobility was mainly controlled by the acid-soluble and reducible fractions. Cd could pose extremely high risks to the environment. In addition, the risks of heavy metal to the environment in the three areas followed the order: mixed area > residential area > agricultural area. Furthermore, a risk assessment code analysis showed that most of the sediment samples were classified as being of high to very high risk in the residential and mixed areas because of their Cd, Ni, and Zn concentrations. Heavy metal pollution in the residential and mixed areas is generally serious, and immediate remediation measures need to be taken.

Xikuangshan is located in Lengshuijiang City, Hunan province, China. With intensive mining and metallurgical activities, large amounts of tailing containing heavy metals (in this study, the term “heavy metals” is used for both metals and metalloids) were introduced to the soils around the mine area. Those heavy metals including antimony and other heavy metals would pose huge risk to human health and ecological environment. With a view to providing information on the extent of contamination and potential ecological risk of heavy metals in the soils of this mine area, the total contents of antimony (Sb), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in the soils were examined. The results revealed that the predominant pollutants in this area were Sb, Cd, and Zn with mean concentrations being 356.58, 9.98, and 486.42 mg kg?1, 119.66, 117.41, and 5.17 times of the corresponding background values respectively. The pollution indices (Ps) indicated that the pollution levels of all sampling zones were serious including the control zones. The ecological risk levels of all heavy metals were very high on all the sampling zones except sampling zone 7 (as considerable), and Sb, Cd, and As were regarded as making great contribution to the risk indices (RI).  相似文献

Present research work was carried out in Sahiwal, Sargodha, Pakistan. Diverse treatments of domestic wastewater were used for ascertaining the contamination level in grains of wheat crop. Food crop exposure to heavy metals has been a subject of great concern due to potential health risks to humans. It was observed that increased proportion of wastewater resulted in elevation of heavy metals both in soil and wheat grains. The iron was found to be higher in comparison to all other studied metals in soil. Similarly, wheat grains had high Cd level. Cadmium had the highest values for daily metal intake, health risk index, and pollution load index. Except Co, all metals were positively and significantly correlated between wheat grains and soil. Zinc had the highest bioavailability due to its highest bioconcentration factor. Value of enrichment factor was highest for Mn. It was thus concluded, on the basis of this study, that wastewater-irrigated crops accumulate more metals. Treatment of wastewater prior to application to plants must be commonly practiced to save crops from contamination.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the levels of Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn in the environment and several important food sources grown and consumed in the vicinity of Dabaoshan mine in Southern China, and evaluate potential health risks among local residents. The Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn concentrations of arable soils and well water near the mines exceeded the quality standard values. The concentrations of Cd and Pb in some food crops (rice grain, vegetable and soybean) samples were significantly higher than the maximum permissible level. The Cd and Pb concentrations in half of the chicken and fish meat samples were higher than the national standard. The residents living near Dabaoshan mine had higher Cd and Pb levels in hair than those of a non-exposed population. The intake of rice was identified as a major contributor to the estimated daily intake of these metals by the residents. The hazard index values for adults and children were 10.25 and 11.11, respectively, with most of the estimated risks coming from the intake of home-grown rice and vegetables. This study highlights the importance of multiple pathways in studying health risk assessment of heavy metal exposure in China.  相似文献

The risk assessment process planned for the S. Domingos mine, an abandoned cupric pyrite mine (Southeast Portugal), established as a task the assessment of soil microbial parameters to evaluate the long-term effects of heavy-metal contamination on the microbial community activity and subsequently on some important soil functions (e.g. nutrients cycling, decomposition of organic matter). Total metal contents as well as physical and chemical parameters (e.g. organic matter, moisture, pH and conductivity) were measured. In the study area, the levels of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb were above soil quality criteria defined by some European countries. Nevertheless, sub-areas from the mining area with high concentrations of As, Cu and Pb and low soil pH levels were separated from the rest, along the first axis of a principal component analysis (PCA). The most sensitive microbial parameters were dehydrogenase activity (DHA) and potential nitrification (POTNI), which were highly depressed in the mining area. According to the redundancy analysis (RDA) of the microbial parameters and environmental variables, and Spearman rank order correlations, pH was positively correlated with these microbial parameters (DHA: rs = 0.733, p < 0.01; POTNI: rs = 0.676, p < 0.01). These results suggested that the contamination with some of the most toxic elements and low pH values adversely affected the biomass and the activity of soil microorganisms in the mining area. Therefore, the results of this study provided evidence about the importance of the assessment of microbial parameters, as a tool for the evaluation of direct impacts of heavy metals in contaminated sites.  相似文献

Abstract

High levels of arsenic (As) contamination in soils from thermal power plants pose a great threat to human health. This study aimed to evaluate the As contamination levels and assess the possible health risk of As in soils from three typical thermal power plants in Southwest China. The concentration of As was detected by using novel collision/reaction cell technology (CCT) with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS, collectively ICP-CCT-MS) after aseptic digestion of soil samples. The carcinogenic risk and hazard quotient were estimated for health risk to workers in the study area by using “Chinese Technical Guidelines for Risk Assessment of Contaminated Sites (HJ 25.3-2014)”. Results showed that the concentration of As was between 3.65 and 33.80?mg/kg, and the comprehensive carcinogenic risk level of As was 3–28 times over the maximum acceptable level (10?6), indicating that workers in the study area are facing serious threat of As. Oral ingestion (76.65%) was the main exposure pathway to carcinogenic risk, followed by skin contact (13.15%) and inhalation of soil particles (10.20%). After calculating the safety threshold values under three different exposure pathways (oral ingestion, skin contact and inhalation of soil particles), the minimum safety threshold value (1.59?mg/kg) was selected as the reference safety threshold value of As in the study area. These results provide basic information of health risk assessment of As and environmental management in thermal power plant areas.  相似文献

Ecological risk assessments (ERAs) have largely ignored exposure to wildlife via inhalation on the assumption that it is negligible compared to the ingestion route of exposure. The assessment of inhalation risk also has been limited due to a paucity of relevant ecotoxicity data. This article presents toxicity reference values (TRVs) for small mammals based on chronic or subchronic exposure studies for a range of organic and trace metal contaminants and ecologically relevant inhalation endpoints. Potential risk to small mammals due to ingestion and inhalation exposure were compared in two hypothetical air emission scenarios for a point source (incinerator) and non-point source emissions (vehicular emissions). Using two screening-level ERAs, we conclude that it may now be time to reconsider inhalation risk to wildlife in the case of atmospheric emissions of some metals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In the case of birds, the toxicological database remains too small to assess risks via this pathway. However, for mammals, we suggest that inhalation exposures to contaminants such as cadmium, benzene, and other VOCs could be important.  相似文献

Mining activities produce waste tailings that can be a significant source of pollution in the surrounding ecosystem. This study was designed to estimate the magnitude of Fe, As, Pb, Cd, Mn, Ni, Zn, and Cr in soil impacted by activities in the Moeil iron ore mine area of northwestern Iran and initially assess the potential risk to nearby residents and ecological habitats. For this, concentrations of elements in 24 samples from 8 locations were analyzed by inductivity coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Concentrations of heavy metals reported for samples collected from the area ranged from 50,247–466,200 mg/kg for Fe, 40–10,827 mg/kg for As, 9–84 mg/kg for Pb, 0.2–58.4 mg/kg for Cd, 32–424 mg/kg for Mn, 4–32 mg/kg for Ni, 37–60 mg/kg for Zn, and 32–337 mg/kg for Cr. Reported levels of Fe and As in particular are indicative of severe contamination and imply a high risk to ecological receptors. Reported levels of arsenic also imply elevated cancer and non-cancer health risks to residents who work in or pass through the area. Reported levels of Cd and Cr in soil samples also indicate an elevated cancer risk posed by these metals. The result of this study indicates it is important to estimate potential contamination of soils and drinking water wills in the vicinity of Moeil village to arsenic and heavy metals.  相似文献

Soil contamination with heavy metals is one of the main environmental concerns in China, mainly owing to rapid industrialization and mining activities in certain areas. The current study aimed at monitoring the levels of heavy metals in soils of the industrial areas along the Jinxi River and surrounding Lake Qingshan. In addition, a health risk assessment for humans in contact with these soils was also conducted. The results revealed that the soils of the studied areas were contaminated with Cr, Cu, As, Se, Cd, Pb, and Zn and that the industrial activities were the main source of soil contamination therein. Furthermore, soils of the sites adjacent to Lin’an city exhibited higher levels of heavy metals than the upstream and Lake Qingshan sites. Most of the studied heavy metals tended to concentrate in the fine soil fractions (PM100, PM10, and PM2.5). Calculation of the hazard index (HI) revealed that humans, especially children, have potential health risks. Moreover, As was found to contribute to more magnitude of cancer risks. Thus, we concluded that the unmanaged development negatively affects the Chinese environment and human health. Furthermore, fine fractions of soil particles should be considered for risk assessment.  相似文献
