The use of Jatropha curcas oil as a source of biofuel has been well-explored. However, the physiological and growth studies of J. curcas have received considerably lesser attention. In this study, leaf gas exchange measurements and leaf nitrogen content were determined for four varieties of J. curcas, grown in the field or in pots. Based on stable carbon isotope analysis (δ13C) and gas-exchange studies, J. curcas is a C3 sun plant and the range of leaf photosynthetic rates (or CO2 assimilation rates, P Nmax) were typically between 7 and 25 μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1 and light saturation generally occurred beyond 800 μmol(quanta) m−2 s−1. Higher rates of leaf photosynthesis were generally obtained with the mature leaves. In addition, increased foliar P Nmax were recorded in potted J. curcas variety Indiana with increasing nitrogen (N) nutrition levels. These plants also showed greater growth, increased leaf N content, higher maximum CO2 assimilation capacity (P NhighCO2) and chlorophyll (Chl) content, indicating the potential of optimizing the growth of Jatropha by varying fertilizer nutrient levels. A rapid assessment for leaf N using a nondestructive and portable Chl meter had been established for J. curcas. This approach will allow repeated sampling of the same plant over time and thus enable the monitoring of the appropriate levels of soil fertility to achieve good Jatropha plantation productivity. High N nutrition improved the overall plant oil yield by increasing the total number of fruits/seeds produced per plant, while not affecting the intrinsic seed oil content.  相似文献

The photosynthetic rates and various components of photosynthesis including ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (Rubisco; EC 4.1.1.39), chlorophyll (Chl), cytochrome (Cyt) f, and coupling factor 1 (CF1) contents, and sucrose-phosphate synthase (SPS; EC 2.4.1.14) activity were examined in young, fully expanded leaves of rice (Oryza sativa L.) grown hydroponically under two irradiances, namely, 1000 and 350 μmol quanta · m−2 · s−1, at three N concentrations. The light-saturated rate of photosynthesis measured at 1800 μmol · m−2 · s−1 was almost the same for a given leaf N content irrespective of growth irradiance. Similarly, Rubisco content and SPS activity were not different for the same leaf N content between irradiance treatments. In contrast, Chl content was significantly greater in the plants grown at 350 μmol · m−2 · s−1, whereas Cyt f and CF1 contents tended to be slightly smaller. However, these changes were not substantial, as shown by the fact that the light-limited rate of photosynthesis measured at 350 μmol · m−2 · s−1 was the same or only a little higher in the plants grown at 350 μmol · m−2 · s−1 and that CO2-saturated photosynthesis did not differ between irradiance treatments. These results indicate that growth-irradiance-dependent changes in N partitioning in a leaf were far from optimal with respect to N-use efficiency of photosynthesis. In spite of the difference in growth irradiance, the relative growth rate of the whole plant did not differ between the treatments because there was an increase in the leaf area ratio in the low-irradiance-grown plants. This increase was associated with the preferential N-investment in leaf blades and the extremely low accumulation of starch and sucrose in leaf blades and sheaths, allowing a more efficient use of the fixed carbon. Thus, morphogenic responses at the whole-plant level may be more important for plants as an adaptation strategy to light environments than a response of N partitioning at the level of a single leaf.  Drought effects on leaf photosynthesis of A. germinans growing under two contrasting salinities were studied in a Venezuelan fringe mangrove. During both wet and dry seasons, severe chronic-photoinhibition at predawn was not observed but strong down regulation occurred at midday during both seasons. Carbon assimilation rates (A, μmol CO2 m−2 s−1) declined during the dry season from 11.9±1.8 to 7.0±1.5 and from 9.6±2.0 to 4.7±2.5 in plants from low and high salinity sites, respectively. Changes in carbon assimilation per unit of chlorophyll (A/Chl, mmol CO2 mol−1 Chl) were from 31.6±4.7 to 20.5±4.3 and from 21.9±4.7 to 15.2±8.2 in the low and high salinity plants, respectively. Therefore, neither changes in Chl nor seasonal differences in photoprotective down regulation could account fully for the decrease in leaf photosynthesis during drought. A reduction in CO2 diffusion due to lowered stomatal conductance was not large enough to explain such a dramatic effect of drought on leaf photosynthesis. Stomatal response could be mitigated by the capability of A. germinans for osmotic adjustment under high salinity and/or drought. However, this intracellular salt accumulation may reduce carbon assimilation capacity further by decreasing the metabolism of leaf cells, increasing dark respiration and/or photorespiration. The aim of this work was to assess the effect of leaf thickness, leaf succulence (LS), specific leaf area (SLA), specific leaf mass (Ws) and leaf water content (LWC) on chlorophyll (Chl) meter values in six Amazonian tree species (Carapa guianensis, Ceiba pentandra, Cynometra spruceana, Pithecolobium inaequale, Scleronema micranthum and Swietenia macrophylla). We also tested the accuracy of a general calibration equation to convert Minolta Chl meter (SPAD-502) readings into absolute Chl content. On average, SPAD values (x) increased with fresh leaf thickness (FLT [μm] = 153.9 + 0.98 x, r 2 = 0.06**), dry leaf thickness (DLT [μm] = 49.50 + 1.28 x, r 2 = 0.16**), specific leaf mass (Ws [g (DM) m−2] = 6.73 + 1.31 x, r 2 = 0.43**), and leaf succulence (LS [g(FM)] m−2 = 94.2 + 1.58 x, r 2 = 0.19**). However, a negative relationship was found between SPAD values and either specific leaf area [SLA (m2 kg−1) = 35.1 − 0.37 x, r 2 = 0.38**] or the leaf water content (LWC [%]= 80.0 − 0.42 x, r 2 = 0.58**). Leaf Chl contents predicted by the general calibration equation significantly differed (p<0.01) from those estimated by species-specific calibration equations. We conclude that to improve the accuracy of the SPAD-502 leaf thickness and LWC should be taken into account when calibration equations are to be obtained to convert SPAD values into absolute Chl content.  相似文献

We employed chlorophyll a fluorometry in order to measure the evolution of turgor threshold (intracellular osmolality) during the adaptation of two genetic transformants of the freshwater cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC7942 to unfavorable external salinity: PAMCOD cells which oxidize imported choline and accumulate approx. 0.06–0.08 M glycine betaine; and PAM cells which do not oxidize choline [Deshnium et al. (1995a) Plant Mol Biol 29: 897–909]. Turgor thresholds increased linearly (a) with the NaCl concentration in the culture, and (b) with the molar sucrose/chlorophyll a ratio in the cell. PAMCOD cells could proliferate in culture medium containing 0.4 M NaCl (external osmolality, 0.815 Osm kg−1), after a lag period, during which intracellular sucrose rose to 10 mol (mol Chl a)−1, or more, and turgor threshold (cytoplasmic osmolality) exceeded 1 Osm kg−1. At comparative conditions, PAM cells accumulated approx. half as much sucrose, and attained approx. half as high turgor thresholds as the PAMCOD cells, but they did not proliferate. These results indicate that glycine betaine improved the salinity tolerance of the PAMCOD cells synergistically, by means of two effects that implicate sucrose, the main organic osmolyte of Synechocccus: enhancement of sucrose biosynthesis, and/or alleviation of sucrose toxicity. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The effects of changes in tropical land use on soil emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO) are not well understood. We examined emissions of N2O and NO and their relationships to land use and forest composition, litterfall, soil nitrogen (N) pools and turnover, soil moisture, and patterns of carbon (C) cycling in a lower montane, subtropical wet region of Puerto Rico. Fluxes of N2O and NO were measured monthly for over 1 year in old (more than 60 years old) pastures, early- and mid-successional forests previously in pasture, and late-successional forests not known to have been in pasture within the tabonuco (Dacryodes excelsa) forest zone. Additional, though less frequent, measures were also made in an experimentally fertilized tabonuco forest. N2O fluxes exceeded NO fluxes at all sites, reflecting the consistently wet environment. The fertilized forest had the highest N oxide emissions (22.0 kg N · ha−1· y−1). Among the unfertilized sites, the expected pattern of increasing emissions with stand age did not occur in all cases. The mid-successional forest most dominated by leguminous trees had the highest emissions (9.0 kg N · ha−1· y−1), whereas the mid-successional forest lacking legumes had the lowest emissions (0.09 kg N · ha−1· y−1). N oxide fluxes from late-successional forests were higher than fluxes from pastures. Annual N oxide fluxes correlated positively to leaf litter N, net nitrification, potential nitrification, soil nitrate, and net N mineralization and negatively to leaf litter C:N ratio. Soil ammonium was not related to N oxide emissions. Forests with lower fluxes of N oxides had higher rates of C mineralization than sites with higher N oxide emissions. We conclude that (a) N oxide fluxes were substantial where the availability of inorganic N exceeded the requirements of competing biota; (b) species composition resulting from historical land use or varying successional dynamics played an important role in determining N availability; and (c) the established ecosystem models that predict N oxide loss from positive relationships with soil ammonium may need to be modified. Sandy clay loam soil was contaminated with 5000 mg kg−1 diesel, and amended with nitrogen (15.98 atom% 15N) at 0, 250, 500, and 1000 mg kg−1 to determine gross rates of nitrogen transformations during diesel biodegradation at varying soil water potentials. The observed water potential values were −0.20, −0.47, −0.85, and −1.50 MPa in the 0, 250, 500, and 1000 mg kg−1 nitrogen treatments respectively. Highest microbial respiration occurred in the lowest nitrogen treatment suggesting an inhibitory osmotic effect from higher rates of nitrogen application. Microbial respiration rates of 185, 169, 131, and 116 mg O2 kg−1 soil day−1 were observed in the 250, 500, control and 1000 mg kg−1 nitrogen treatments, respectively. Gross nitrification was inversely related to water potential with rates of 0.2, 0.04, and 0.004 mg N kg−1 soil day−1 in the 250, 500, and 1000 mg kg−1 nitrogen treatments, respectively. Reduction in water potential did not inhibit gross nitrogen immobilization or mineralization, with respective immobilization rates of 2.2, 1.8, and 1.8 mg N kg−1 soil day−1, and mineralization rates of 0.5, 0.3, and 0.3 mg N kg−1 soil day−1 in the 1000, 500, and 250 mg kg−1 nitrogen treatments, respectively. Based on nitrogen transformation rates, the duration of fertilizer contribution to the inorganic nitrogen pool was estimated at 0.9, 1.9, and 3.2 years in the 250, 500, and 1000 mg kg−1 nitrogen treatments, respectively. The estimation was conservative as ammonium fixation, gross nitrogen immobilization, and nitrification were considered losses of fertilizer with only gross mineralization of organic nitrogen contributing to the most active portion of the nitrogen pool.  相似文献

An ecotype of brake fern (Pteris vittata) was assessed for arsenic tolerance and accumulation in its biomass under in vivo and in vitro condition; using soil, and agar-gelled Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with different concentrations of arsenic. The plants were raised in soil amended with 100–1000 mg arsenic kg−1 soil, and MS medium was supplemented with 10–300 mg arsenic 1−1 medium using Na2HAsO4 · 7H2O. The spores and haploid gametophytic-prothalli were raised in vitro on MS medium supplemented with arsenic. The field plants showed normal growth and biomass formation in arsenic amended soil, and accumulated 1908–4700 mg arsenic kg−1 dry aerial biomass after 10 weeks of growth. Arsenic toxicity was observed above >200 mg arsenic kg−1 soil. The concentrations of arsenic accumulated in the plant biomass were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Normal plants were developed from spores and gametophyte prothalli on the MS media supplemented with 50–200 mg arsenic 1−1 medium. The in vitro raised plants were tolerant to 300 mg arsenic kg−1 of soil and accumulated up to 3232 mg arsenic kg−1 dry aerial biomass that showed better growth performance, biomass generation and arsenic accumulation in comparison to the field plants. 氮沉降处理分4个水平,分别为N0(0 kg N·hm-2·a-1)、N1(60 kg N·hm-2·a-1)、N2(120 kg N·hm-2·a-1)、N3(240 kg N·hm-2·a-1),每处理重复3次。

Summary Nitrogen balance studies were made on rice (Oryza sativa) grown in flooded soil in pots. A low rate of fertilizer (5.64 mg N. kg−1 soil) did not depress the N gain, but a high rate (99.72 mg N. kg−1 soil) elminated the N gain. Soil N loss was negligible since15N applied as ammonium sulfate and thoroughly mixed with the soil was recovered from the soil-plant system after 3 crops. The observed N gain, therefore, was caused by N2-fixation, not by a reduction of soil N loss. Straw enhanced N gain at the rate of 2–4 mg per g straw. However, this gain was not observed when soil N availability was high. Dry fallow between rice crops decreased the N gain.  相似文献

Glasshouse experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of L-methionine (L-MET) and L-ethionine (L-ETH) added to soil on the growth of corn (Zea mays L.) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), respectively. The application of L-MET and L-ETH stimulated C2H4 production in soil by 299- and 313-fold, respectively, over an unamended control. An L-MET treatment of 1.85 mg kg−1 soil was the most effective in increasing shoot height, shoot fresh weight, internodal distance, and stem diameter in two corn cultivars, Kandy Korn and Miracle, while shoot and root dry weights, leaf width, uppermost leaf collar base distance and resistance to stem breaking were increased in the case of Kandy Korn only. A significant epinastic response was observed in the second and third leaves of tomato plants when soil was treated with L-ETH. An L-ETH treatment of 0.2 mg kg−1 soil resulted in the maximum fresh fruit yield, while 0.02 and 2.0 mg kg−1 gave the most fruit and greater average weight of fresh fruit, respectively. Concentrations ranging from 0.002 to 2.0 mg L-ETH kg−1 soil initiated early fruit formation. Early fruit ripening was observed with an application rate of 20 mg L-ETH kg−1 soil. The mechanism of action of these chemicals could either be attributed to i) substrate-dependent C2H4 production in soil by the indigenous microflora, ii) uptake directly by plant roots followed by metabolism within the tissues, and/or iii) a change in the balance of rhizosphere microflora affecting plant growth.  相似文献

Functional aspects of biodiversity were investigated in a lowland tropical rainforest in French Guyana (5°2′N, annual precipitation 2200 mm). We assessed leaf δ15N as a presumptive indicator of symbiotic N2 fixation, and leaf and wood cellulose δ13C as an indicator of leaf intrinsic water-use efficiency (CO2 assimilation rate/leaf conductance for water vapour) in dominant trees of 21 species selected for their representativeness in the forest cover, their ecological strategy (pioneers or late successional stage species, shade tolerance) or their potential ability for N2 fixation. Similar measurements were made in trees of native species growing in a nearby plantation after severe perturbation (clear cutting, mechanical soil disturbance). Bulk soil δ15N was spatially quite uniform in the forest (range 3–5‰), whereas average leaf δ15N ranged from −0.3‰ to 3.5‰ in the different species. Three species only, Diplotropis purpurea, Recordoxylon speciosum (Fabaceae), and Sclerolobium melinonii (Caesalpiniaceae), had root bacterial nodules, which was also associated with leaf N concentrations higher than 20 mg g−1. Although nodulated trees displayed significantly lower leaf δ15N values than non-nodulated trees, leaf δ15N did not prove a straightforward indicator of symbiotic fixation, since there was a clear overlap of δ15N values for nodulated and non-nodulated species at the lower end of the δ15N range. Perturbation did not markedly affect the difference δ15Nsoil δ15Nleaf, and thus the isotopic data provide no evidence of an alteration in the different N acquisition patterns. Extremely large interspecific differences in sunlit leaf δ13C were observed in the forest (average values from −31.4 to −26.7‰), corresponding to intrinsic water-use efficiencies (ratio CO2 assimilation rate/leaf conductance for water vapour) varying over a threefold range. Wood cellulose δ13C was positively related to total leaf δ13C, the former values being 2–3‰ higher than the latter ones. Leaf δ13C was not related to leaf δ15N at either intraspecific or interspecific levels. δ13C of sunlit leaves was highest in shade hemitolerant emergent species and was lower in heliophilic, but also in shade-tolerant species. For a given species, leaf δ13C did not differ between the pristine forest and the disturbed plantation conditions. Our results are not in accord with the concept of existence of functional types of species characterized by common suites of traits underlying niche differentiation; rather, they support the hypothesis that each trait leads to a separate grouping of species. Nitrogen relations of natural and disturbed tropical plant communities in northern Australia (Kakadu National Park) were studied. Plant and soil N characteristics suggested that differences in N source utilisation occur at community and species level. Leaf and xylem sap N concentrations of plants in different communities were correlated with the availability of inorganic soil N (NH+ 4 and NO 3). In general, rates of leaf NO 3 assimilation were low. Even in communities with a higher N status, including deciduous monsoon forest, disturbed wetland, and a revegetated mine waste rock dump, levels of leaf nitrate reductase, xylem and leaf NO 3 levels were considerably lower than those that have been reported for eutrophic communities. Although NO 3 assimilation in escarpment and eucalypt woodlands, and wetland, was generally low, within these communities there was a suite of species that exhibited a greater capacity for NO 3 assimilation. These “high- NO 3 species” were mainly annuals, resprouting herbs or deciduous trees that had leaves with high N contents. Ficus, a high-NO 3 species, was associated with soil exhibiting higher rates of net mineralisation and net nitrification. “Low-NO 3 species” were evergreen perennials with low leaf N concentrations. A third group of plants, which assimilated NO 3 (albeit at lower rates than the high-NO 3 species), and had high-N leaves, were leguminous species. Acacia species, common in woodlands, had the highest leaf N contents of all woody species. Acacia species appeared to have the greatest potential to utilise the entire spectrum of available N sources. This versatility in N source utilisation may be important in relation to their high tissue N status and comparatively short life cycle. Differences in N utilisation are discussed in the context of species life strategies and mycorrhizal associations. Received: 5 July 1997 / Accepted: 13 July 1998  相似文献

The effect of elevated CO2 concentration (CE) on leaf chlorophyll (Chl) and nitrogen (N) contents and photosynthetic rate (PN) was evaluated during the post-flowering stages of rice grown at CE (570 ± 50 μmol mol−1) in open top chamber (OTC), at ambient CO2 concentration (∼ 365 μmol mol−1) in OTC and at open field. Thirty-five day old seedlings were transplanted in OTCs or in field and allowed to grow till maturity. Chl and N contents were highest at the time of flowering and thereafter it started to decline. The rate of decline in Chl and N contents was faster in plants grown under CE mostly in later part of growth. Irrespective of treatment difference, flag leaf contained the highest amount of Chl and N than penultimate and third leaf. The higher PN was observed in leaves under CE than in the leaves in other two growing conditions. Considering growth stage, PN was the highest at flowering which reduced at the later part of growth due to degradation of Chl and N content of the leaf. Under CE it was 40.02 μmol m−2 s−1 at flowering and it reduced to only 14.77 μmol m−2 s−1 at maturity stage. The beneficial effect of CE in increasing leaf PN may be maintained by applying extra dose of nitrogen at the later stages of plant growth.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) and energy (E) requirements of the phyllostomid fruit bat, Artibeus jamaicensis, and the pteropodid fruit bat Rousettus aegyptiacus, were measured in adults that were fed on four experimental diets. Mean daily food intake by A. jamaicensis and R. aegyptiacus ranged from 1.1–1.6 times body mass and 0.8–1.0 times body mass, respectively. Dry matter digestibility and metabolizable E coefficient were high (81.1% and 82.4%, respectively) for A. jamaicensis and (77.5% and 78.0%, respectively) for R. aegyptiacus. Across the four diets, bats maintained constant body mass with mean metabolizable E intakes ranging from 1357.3 kJ · kg−0.75 · day−1 to 1767.3 kJ · kg−0.75 · day−1 for A. jamaicensis and 1282.6–1545.2 kJ · kg−0.75 · day−1 for R. aegyptiacus. Maintenance E costs were high, in the order of 3.6–5.4 times the basal metabolic rate (BMR). It is unlikely that the E intakes that we observed represent a true measure of maintenance E requirements. All evidence seems to indicate that fruit bats are E maximizers, ingesting more E than required and regulating storage by adjusting metabolic output. We suggest that true maintenance E requirements are substantially lower than what we observed. If it follows the eutherian norm of two times the BMR, fruit bats must necessarily over-ingest E on low-N fruit diet. Dietary E content did affect N metabolism of A. jamaicensis. On respective low- and high-E diets, metabolic fecal N were 0.492 mg N · g−1 and 0.756 mg N · g−1 dry matter intake and endogenous urinary N losses were 163.31 mg N · kg−0.75 · day−1 and 71.54 mg N · kg−0.75 · day−1. A. jamaicensis required 332.3 mg · kg−0.75 · day−1 and 885.3 mg · kg−0.75 · day−1 of total N on high- and low-E diets, respectively, and 213.7 mg · kg−0.75 · day−1 of truly digestible N to achieve N balance. True N digestibilities were low (29% and 49%) for low- and high-E diets, respectively. For R. aegyptiacus, metabolic fecal N and endogenous urinary N losses were 1.27 mg N · g−1 dry matter intake and 96.0 mg N · kg−0.75 · day−1, respectively, and bats required 529.8 mg · kg−0.75 · day−1 (total N) or 284.0 mg · kg−0.75 · day−1 (truly digestible N). True N digestibility was relatively low (50%). Based on direct comparison, we found no evidence that R. aegyptiacus exhibits a greater degree of specialization in digestive function and N retention than A. jamaicensis. When combined with results from previous studies, our results indicate that all fruit bats appear to be specialized in their ability to retain N when faced with low N diet. Wheat leaf growth is known to be spatially affected by salinity. The altered spatial distribution of leaf growth under saline conditions may be associated with spatial changes in tissue mineral elements. The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial distributions of mineral elements and their net deposition rates in the elongating and mature zones of leaf 4 of the main stem of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Lona) during its linear growth phase under saline soil conditions. Plants were grown in an illitic-chloritic silty loam with 0 and 120 mM NaCl. Three days after emergence of leaf 4, sampling was begun at 3 and 13 h into the 16-h light period. Spatial distributions of fresh weight (FW), dry weight (DW), and Na+, K+, Cl, NO 3, Ca2+, Mg2+, total P, and total N in the elongating and mature tissues were determined on a millimeter scale. The patterns of spatial distribution of Na+, Cl, K+, NO3 , and Ca2+ in the growing leaves were affected by salinity, while those of Mg2+, total P, and total N were not. Sodium, K+, Cl, Ca2+, Mg2+, and total N concentrations (mmol · kg−1 FW) were consistently higher at 120 mM NaCl than at 0 mM NaCl along the leaf axis from the leaf base, whereas NO3 concentration was lower at 120 mM NaCl. Deposition rates of all nutrients were greatest in the elongation zone. The elongation zone was the strongest sink for mineral elements in the leaf tissues. Local net deposition rates of Na+, Cl, Ca2+, and Mg2+ (mmol · kg−1 FW · h−1) in the most actively elongating zone were enhanced by 120 mM NaCl, whereas for NO3 this was depressed. The lower supply of NO 3 to growing leaves may be responsible for the inhibition of growth under saline conditions. Higher tissue concentrations of Na+ and Cl may cause ion imbalance but probably did not result in ion toxicity in the growing leaves. Potassium, Ca2+, Mg2+, total P, and total N are less plausibly responsible for the reduction in leaf growth in this study. Higher tissue K+ and Ca2+ concentrations at 120 mM NaCl are probably due to the presence of high Ca2+ in the soil of this study. Received: 13 March 1997 / Accepted: 9 June 1997  相似文献

Photosynthetic parameters, growth, and pigment contents were determined during expansion of the fourth leaf of in vitro photoautotrophically cultured Nicotiana tabacum L. plants at three irradiances [photosynthetically active radiation (400–700 nm): low, LI 60 μmol m−2 s−1; middle, MI 180 μmol m−2 s−1; and high, HI 270 μmol m−2 s−1]. During leaf expansion, several symptoms usually accompanying leaf senescence appeared very early in HI and then in MI plants. Symptoms of senescence in developing leaves were: decreasing chlorophyll (Chl) a+b content and Chl a/b ratio, decreasing both maximum (FV/FM) and actual (ΦPS2) photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2, and increasing non-photochemical quenching. Nevertheless, net photosynthetic oxygen evolution rate (P N) did not decrease consistently with decrease in Chl content, but exhibited a typical ontogenetic course with gradual increase. P N reached its maximum before full leaf expansion and then tended to decline. Thus excess irradiance during in vitro cultivation did not cause early start of leaf senescence, but impaired photosynthetic performance and Chl content in leaves and changed their typical ontogenetic course.  相似文献

The present experiment was designed to study the importance of strength and muscle mass as factors limiting maximal oxygen uptake (O2 max ) in wheelchair subjects. Thirteen paraplegic subjects [mean age 29.8 (8.7) years] were studied during continuous incremental exercises until exhaustion on an arm-cranking ergometer (AC), a wheelchair ergometer (WE) and motor-driven treadmill (TM). Lean arm volume (LAV) was estimated using an anthropometric method based upon the measurement of various circumferences of the arm and forearm. Maximal strength (MVF) was measured while pushing on the rim of the wheelchair for three positions of the hand on the rim (−30°, 0° and +30°). The results indicate that paraplegic subjects reached a similar O2 max [1.23 (0.34) l · min−1, 1.25 (0.38) l · min−1, 1.22 (0.18) l · min−1 for AC, TM and WE, respectively] and O2 max /body mass [19.7 (5.2) ml · min−1 · kg−1, 19.5 (6.14) ml · min−1 · kg−1, 19.18 (4.27) ml · min−1 · kg−1 for AC, TM and WE, respectively on the three ergometers. Maximal heart rate f c max during the last minute of AC (173 (17) beats · min−1], TM [168 (14) beats · min−1], and WE [165 (16) beats · min−1], were correlated, but f c max was significantly higher for AC than for TM (P<0.03). There were significant correlations between MVF and LAV (P<0.001) and between the MVF data obtained at different angles of the hand on the rim [311.9 (90.1) N, 313.2 (81.2) N, 257.1 (71) N, at −30°, 0° and +30°, respectively]. There was no correlation between O2 max and LAV or MVF. The relatively low values of f c max suggest that O2 max was, at least in part, limited by local aerobic factors instead of central cardiovascular factors. On the other hand, the lack of a significant correlation between O2 max and MVF or muscle mass was not in favour of muscle strength being the main factor limiting O2 max in our subjects. Seedlings of Bidens cernua L. emerged when mean air temperature was 17.0±1.3 °C. The highest net photosynthetic rate (P N), 13.8±0.8 μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1, was monitored during the vegetative period (May–August), decreasing on an average by 50 % during flowering (August–September) and during fruiting (September–November) phases. The senescence phase (October–November) was characterised by 79, 58, and 18 % decrease of P N, chlorophyll content, and leaf area (LA), respectively, from the maximum values. The time span from seedling emergence to the end of fruiting phase was 202 d. The total plant biomass was 1.58±0.05 g of which 81 % was aboveground plant portion. The total dry mass relative growth rate averaged over the assimilation period was 0.0804±0.0002 kg kg−1 d−1, and it was correlated to both the net assimilation rate (NAR) and the leaf area ratio (LAR).  相似文献

Seasonal leaf water relations characteristics were studied in fully irrigated spring barley (Hordeum distichum L. cv. Gunnar) fertilized at low (50 kg K ha−1) or high (200 kg K ha−1) levels of potassium applied as KCl. The investigation was undertaken from about 14 days before anthesis until the milk ripe stage in leaves of different position and age. Additionally, the effects of severe water stress on leaf water relations were studied in the middle of the grain filling period in spring barley (cv. Alis). The leaf water relations characteristics were determined by the pressure volume (PV) technique. Water relations of fully irrigated plants were compared in leaf No 7 with the water relations of slowly droughted plants (cv. Alis). Leaf osmotic potential at full turgor (ψ π 100 ) decreased 0.1 to 0.3 MPa in droughted leaves indicating a limited osmotic adjustment due to solute accumulation. The leaf osmotic potential at zero turgor (ψ π 0 ) was about −2.2 MPa in fully irrigated plants and −2.6 MPa in droughted plants. The relative water content at zero turgor (R0) decreased 0.1 unit in severely droughted leaves. The ratio of turgid leaf weight to dry weight (TW/DW) tended to be increased by drought. The tissue modulus of elasticity (ε) decreased in droughted plants and together with osmotic adjustment mediated turgor maintenance during drought. A similar response to drought was found in low and high K plants except that the R0 and ε values tended to be higher in the high K plants. Conclusively, during drought limited osmotic adjustment and increase in elasticity of the leaf tissue mediated turgor maintenance. These effects were only slightly modified by high potassium application. The seasonal analysis in fully irrigated plants (cv. Gunnar) showed that within about 14 days from leaf emergence ψ π 100 decreased from about −0.9 to −1.6 MPa in leaf No 7 (counting the first leaf to emerge as number one) and from about −1.1 to −1.9 MPa in leaf No 8 (the flag leaf) due to solute accumulation. A similar decrease took place in ψ π 0 except that the level of ψ π 0 was displaced to a lower level of about 0.2 to 0.3 MPa. Both ψ π 100 and ψ π 0 tended to be 0.05 to 0.10 MPa lower in high K than in low K plants. R0 was about 0.8 to 0.9 and was independent of leaf position and age, but tended to be highest in high K plants. The TW/DW ratio decreased from about 5.5 in leaf No 6 to 4.5 in leaf No 7 and 3.8 in leaf No 8. The TW/DW ratio was 4 to 10% higher in high K than in low K plants indicating larger leaf cell size in the former. The apoplastic water content (Va) at full turgor constituted about 15% in leaf No 7. ε was maximum at full turgor and varied from about 11 to 34 MPa. ε tended to be higher in high K plants. Conclusively, in fully watered plants an ontogenetically determined accumulation of solutes (probably organic as discussed) occurred in the leaves independent of K application. The main effect of high K application on water relations was an increase in leaf water content and a slight decrease in leaf ψπ. The effect of K status on growth and drought resistance is discussed.  相似文献
