Fluctuations in plant and frond characteristics are described for Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Agardh (Laminariales, Phaeophyta) forming a fringing zone in the Falkland Islands. Giant kelp plants were sampled along a transect in the austral autumn (May 1986) and late spring (December 1986) which, according to previous frond weight analysis, were the times when extremes in population parameters were expected. Plant density and holdfast wet weights were similar for both seasons, but plants had more fronds and the fronds weighed more in spring than in autumn. Consequently, in autumn the frond biomass (1·1 wet kg m?2) and productivity (34·1 wet g m?2 d?1) were lower than in spring, when a biomass of 5·0 wet kg m?2 and a productivity of 72·4 wet g m?2 d?1 were recorded. Production of new fronds and loss of old fronds were determined at monthly intervals between April 1986 and March 1987. New frond production rates followed fluctuations in the quantity of light and varied between 0·08 and 0·48 fronds per plant per day. Frond loss rates did not show a seasonal pattern and fluctuated between 0·05 and 0·42 fronds per plant per day. It is suggested that the Falkland Islands Macrocystis population is more stable than most other giant kelp beds at high latitudes, because of the absence of winter storms.  相似文献

The importance that frond crowding represents for the survival of fronds of the clonal intertidal alga Mazzaella cornucopiae (Postels et Ruprecht) Hommersand (Rhodophyta, Gigartinaceae) was investigated in Barkley Sound, British Columbia, Canada. Frond density is high for this species, up to 20 fronds·cm?2 in the most crowded stands. Frond crowding imposes a cost in the form of reduced net photosynthetic rates when fronds are fully hydrated as a result of reduced irradiance compared with experimental (not found naturally) low-density stands. However, the interaction between desiccation and irradiance alters this relationship between net photosynthetic rates and frond density. During a typical daytime low tide in spring, irradiance is 10–30 μmol·m?2·s?1 below the canopy of fronds, and frond desiccation (relative to total water content) can reach 43% at the end of the low tide. In contrast to natural stands, fronds from experimentally thinned stands are subjected to irradiances up to 2000 μmol·m?2·s?1 because of the spatial separation among fronds and can desiccate up to 81% at the end of the same low tide. Laboratory experiments showed that negative net photosynthetic rates occur between 40% and 80% desiccation at an irradiance of 515 μmol·m?2·s?1, and the literature suggests that strong bleaching could occur as a result. At 20 μmol·m?2·s?1 of irradiance and desiccation levels up to 40%, simulating understory conditions of natural stands, net photosynthetic rates are never negative. Experimental thinning of stands of M. cornucopiae done during spring effectively resulted in a stronger extent of frond bleaching compared with natural stands. Therefore, the cost of reduced net photosynthetic rates at high frond densities when fronds are fully hydrated is counterbalanced by the protective effects of frond crowding against extensive bleaching, essential for survival at the intertidal zone. Future research will have to demonstrate the possible relationship between the frequency and duration of negative net photosynthetic rates and the extent of frond bleaching.  相似文献

Survival of the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera (Linnaeus) C. Agardh, in its natural habitat is governed by abiotic and biotic factors such as temperature, light, nutrients, current velocity, and predators. Factors affecting the survival of the alga in an aquarium setting, however, have not been investigated. The National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium (NMMBA), in subtropical Taiwan, is the only aquarium in the world that displays giant kelp that does not have naturally occurring specimens in nearby waters. Giant kelp displayed in aquaria often deteriorates within a 3-month period, yet the cause of this mortality is unknown. We investigated abiotic and biotic parameters affecting survival of giant kelp in aquaria over a 3-month period. The results indicated that temperature, salinity, pH, light, and nutrient concentrations did not affect giant kelp survival. However, the massive proliferation of epiphytic diatoms on kelp blades (from 7?×?102 cells cm?2 initially to 3?×?104 cells cm?2 after 1 month) was identified as being the most likely candidate affecting survival of giant kelp in an aquarium setting. Potential factors that may stimulate epiphyte proliferation include lack of epiphytic algae control via predation, high nutrient concentrations, a weak current, and a generally stable environment.  相似文献

Suspended and benthic algal communities from a mildly acidic, third-order Rhode Island stream were examined to determine the seasonal distribution, abundance and diversity of the lotic desmids. Within a one-year sampling period, 148 species and 202 subspecific taxa of desmids were identified, representing 23 genera. Species of Cosmarium and Closterium accounted for approximately 70% of the desmids present, and were the most diverse and abundant taxa during all seasons except spring, when Hyalotheca dissiliens was the dominant desmid species. Average abundance and species richness generally were greatest during summer for both suspended and benthic desmids. Most desmids occurred in benthic habitats, and were randomly distributed among substrata. Average seasonal abundance was 7.4 × 104 cells·g?1 dry wt substratum, among 13 types of substrata. Highest desmid abundance was measured among substrata with intricate morphologies, such as Fontinalis spp., which was associated with 1.2 × 106 desmid cells·g?1 dry wt substratum, or 1.7 × 103 cells·cm?2 substratum. Cell division was observed for 70 desmid taxa, and average seasonal reproduction (based on cell numbers) among all substrata ranged from 4% in winter to 20% during summer. In addition, sexually produced zygospores were found occasionally for H. dissiliens. Desmids were distributed among most substrata examined in this stream, with abundance comparable to reported estimates from softwater lakes and acid bogs. In contrast to established dogma, lotic desmids are not incidental drift organisms, but rather comprise a viable and persistent component of the stream periphyton.  相似文献

A population of Laminaria longicruris de la Pylaie was followed for a year at Bic Island, Quebec, Canada where nutrient levels in the seawater were elevated throughout the year. Tagged kelp were measured each month for growth and analyzed for alginic acid, laminaran, mannitol, carbon, nitrogen, and nitrate. Maximum growth (3.5 cm · d?1) was observed in June, and minimal growth (0.18 cm · d?1) from December to February, when ice cover limited light levels. No reserves of carbon or nitrate were formed. Laminaran levels remained below 2.7% dry weight while tissue nitrate did not exceed 0.75 μmol · g?1 dry weight. Total carbon produced per plant was 40 g C · yr?1. Nutrient availability enables the kelp to take advantage of summer light and temperature conditions to grow rapidly.  相似文献

We studied the hypothesis that diatom immigration abilities are related to their fitness for colonizing stream substrates. Diatom abundances on artificial substrates exposed for 24 h (the measure of immigration rate) and abundances of stream plankton were determined in six habitats. Diatom immigration varied among habitats from 50–2500 cells·cm?2·d?1. Immigration rates decreased 10-fold with increases in current from 10 to 30 cm·s?1 but changed little during a 40-d summer period. Immigration abilities of diatom taxa were characterized as ratios of either their abundances or relative abundances in immigration assemblages versus in the plankton. Immigration abilities varied over 100-fold among different species. Immigration of some species could be characterized as slower than others in different streams; however, variation in immigration abilities of other species among streams indicated that environment also affected immigration. Diurnal variation in abundance and species composition of the immigration pool (stream plankton) can be important in assessing immigration abilities. Immigration ability may affect benthic diatom fitness. Monoraphid diatoms had a lower probability of immigrating from the plankton than araphid diatoms.  相似文献

Intertidal Egregia menziesii (Turner) Aresch. populations were studied at three Southern California sites to determine temporal and spatial patterns of reproduction and morphology. The timing of sporophyll production and sporophyte recruitment was similar at all sites. Sporophyll production was much greater during winter periods of colder seawater temperatures and shorter day lengths. Sporophyte recruitment occurred from spring through midsummer, ~5 months following maximal sporophyll production. Lateral blade morphologies varied in a consistent manner, suggesting a developmental mechanism for form variation in Egregia thalli. Spatulate blades dominated shorter axes and the bases of longer axes, whereas filiform laterals became abundant toward the tips of longer axes. Filiform laterals (9.8 mg O2·g?1·h?1) had higher light‐saturated net photosynthetic rates than spatulate laterals (6.8 mg O2·g?1·h?1), resulting in a 12% increase in the productivity of Egregia per meter of filiform frond.  相似文献

In three experiments, each with three species of newly transformed juvenile fishes, the immediate mortality was determined after electrical exposure to 60 Hz pulsed DC in waters of different conductivity (Cw). With a constant applied power density (Da; 1·0–4·9 mW cm?3 depending on species) over a range of Cw(10–1020 μS cm?1), the results predicted that the highest fish mortality would occur at Cw of 65 μS cm?1 for bluegill Lepomis macrochirus, 74 μS cm?1 for largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides and at 140–175 μS cm?1 for channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus. In experiment 2, the voltage gradient (E) was maintained constant (2·5–8·0 peak V cm?1 depending on species) over the same range of Cw, and fish mortality increased with current density (J) or Da, which are directly related to Cw. In experiment 3, fish mortality did not differ when peak E(3 or 8 V cm?1 depending on species) and mean J(0·09 or 0·24 mA cm?2 depending on species) were held constant by changing pulse width in waters with different Cw(99, 165 or 495 μS cm?1). Fish mortality in this experiment was not significantly related to peak or mean transferred power density, and the ‘power transfer theory for electrofishing’ was not useful for predicting electrofishing mortality. Overall, the results of the present study indicated that mortality caused by exposure to electricity can be predicted more accurately with the variables peak E and mean J than with models requiring determination of effective conductivity of the fish.  相似文献

The brown tide picoalga Aureococcus anophagefferens Hargraves et Sieburth was present in approximately equal numbers in 12 large scale (13,000 L) mesocosms at the start of a nutrient addition experiment in June 1985. Increases in abundance in untreated systems mimicked the pattern of bloom development in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, the seawater source for the experiment. Aureococcus increased to maximal values of 2.6 × 109 cells. L?1 and persisted at high numbers (108 cells·L?1) for 7–8 weeks. In nutrient addition tanks, the picoalgae bloomed briefly (1–3 weeks) but rapidly declined to the usual level (~107 cells·L?1) for eukaryotic algae in Narragansett Bay. The decline in picoalgae abundance was followed by an increase in total diatoms in all nutrient treated tanks. Mean picoalgae abundance in the mesocosms and the bay was significantly (P < 0.05) and inversely correlated (r =–0.93) with mean concentration of dissolved inorganic nitrogen. The persistence of the brown tide species in control mesocosms and Narragansett Bay appears related to its ability to grow at very low concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen, levels previously shown to limit diatom growth.  相似文献

Measurements of net photosynthesis (PS, O2 evolution), dark respiration (R, O2 consumption), and light and dark carbon fixation (14C) were conducted on whole blades, isolated blade discs, sporophylls, apical scimitars and representative portions of stipe and holdfast of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera L.C. Ag. On a dry weight basis, highest net PS rates were observed in apical scimitar segments and whole blades (3.81 and 3.07 mgC · g dry wt?1· h?1, respectively), followed by sporophylls (1.42 mgC·g dry wt?1· h?1) and stipe segments (0.15 mgC·g dry wt?1· h?1). No PS capacity was observed in holdfast material. Respiration rates showed similar ranking ranging from 1.22 mgC·g dry wt?1·h?1 for apical scimitar to 0.18–0.22 mgC·g dry wt?1· h?1 for holdfast material. Considerable within blade variability in both PS and R was also found. Steepest PS and R gradients on both an areal and weight basis were found within immature blades followed by senescent and mature blade material. Highest net PS rates were associated with the blade tips ranging from 3.08 (mature blades) to 10.3 mgC·dry wt?1·h?1 (immature blades). Highest rates of R generally occurred towards the basal portions of blades and ranged from 1.03–1.80 mgC·g dry wt?1·h?1 for immature blades. The variability within and between blades was high, with coefficients of variation approaching 50%. The observed patterns can be related to the decreasing proportionment of photosynthetic tissue and increasing proportionment of structural tissue as occurs from the blade tip to the blade base. Rates of light carbon fixation (LCF) revealed longitudinal profiles similar to oxygen measurements for the different blade types, with the absolute rates being slightly lower. Patterns of dark carbon fixation (DCF) were less easily interpreted. Highest rates of DCF (0.04–0.06 mgC·g dry wt?1·h?1) occurred at the basal portions of immature and senescent blades. Longitudinal profiles of total chlorophyll (a + c) on both an areal and weight basis were very similar to the profiles of PS. Normalized to chlorophyll a, PS displayed an unusual longitudinal profile in immature tissue; however, such profiles for mature and senescent tissues were similar to those for PS on an areal basis. It was demonstrated that it is difficult, if not impossible, to select single tissue discs that are representative of whole blades. The metabolic longitudinal profiles reveal a characteristic developmental pattern; the previous working definitions of immature, mature, and senescent blades, based on morphology and frond position thus have a physiological basis.  相似文献

Gametophytes of three Laminaria species occurring near Helgoland, North Sea, were cultivated 4 wk in a 12:12 LD regime at different temperatures in artificial light fields, and in the sea at different water depths. In the artificial light fields underwater spectral distribution was simulated according to Jerlov water Types 5, 7, 9. Blue light in the simulated light fields amounted to 17, 12 or 4% of total quanta. The rate of vegetative growth did not depend on spectral distribution, was light-saturated at 4–6 W · m?2, and increased with temperature up to 15 C. L. saccharina (L.) Lamour. exhibited the highest tolerance towards temperature, light and UV. Gametophytes survived 1 wk at 21 C ± 0.1, but not 22 C ± 0.1. Gametophytes of L. hyperborea (Gunn.) Fosl. and L. digitata (Huds.) Lamour. survived 1 wk at 20 C ± 0.1, but not at 21 C ± 0.1. In sunlight, and in the light field of a xenon lamp, 50% of L. saccharina gametophytes were killed by a quantum dose of 50 μEin · cm?2, and 100% of the plants by 90 μEin · cm?2. Approximately half of these quantum doses killed the corresponding percent of the other species gametophytes. Appreciably higher quantum doses were survived in visible light, with red being the most detrimental. Fertility depended on a critical quantum dose of blue light which decreased almost exponentially with decreasing temperature. The quantum dose (400–512 nm) required for induction of fertilization of 50% of the female gametophytes (males react similarly) was 90 μEin · cm?2 at 5 C, 110 μEin · cm?2 at 10 C, 230 (560 in L. digitata)μEin · cm?2 at 15 C, and 560 (L. hyperborea) or about 850 (other 2 species) μEin · cm?2 at 18 C. In the sea the gametophytes survived the dark winter months in the unicellular stage, with almost no vegetative growth of the primary cell, due to lack of light. In early spring the female gametophytes matured in the unicellular, and the males in a few-celled stage at the depth of 2 m, as did the laboratory cultures under conditions inducing maximal fertility.  相似文献

A very broad circular dichroism band is observed in reduced spinach ferredoxin at 3600 cm?1. The maximum Δε is +1.1 M?1 · cm?1. The rotational strength is if+1.0 · 10?39 merg · cm3 (+0.11 Debye-Bohr magneton); the minimum magnetic transition dipole moment is 0.14 Bohr magneton. These values are roughly consistent with expectations for a d → d transition of tetrahedrally coordinated Fe2+.No CD is detected in the oxidized protein between 5000 and 2800 cm?1.  相似文献

Community structure of benthic diatoms in two sandy streams was studied for two summers to assess differences in abundances and species composition among habitats and between years and streams. The greatest differences in abundances (cells·cm?2) were lower abundances on rocks than on sand, whether the sand was clean or covered with flocculent organic material. Relatively little variation in abundances occurred between years and streams. Species composition of diatom communities varied more among habitats and between streams than from year to year. Species composition was most unique in floc-covered sand when communities in clean and floc-covered sand, rock, plant, and plankton were compared. Diatom species composition in these sandy streams was most similar on sand and rocks.  相似文献

By using the static correlations of fluctuations in the dihedral angles of the α-helices of polyglycine and poly(L -alanine) calculated previously, geometrical fluctuations of a section (consisting of up to 18 peptide units) of the α-helices of infinite length are calculated. These fluctuations are found to differ in some respects (e.g., the dependence of amplitudes on the length of section) from those of a circular rod made of homogeneous continuous material. However, the moduli of the mechanical strengths (tensile Young's modulus, bending Young's modulus, and the shear modulus) of a circular rod are calculated, whose geometrical fluctuations are approximately equal to the fluctuations of a section consisting of 18 peptide units. They are of the order of 1011 dyn/cm2. The tensile rigidity, flexural rigidity, and torsional rigidity are calculated to be 1.20 × 10?3 dyn, 2.46 × 10?19 dyn·cm2 and 1.79 × 10?19 dyn·cm2 for polyglycine, and 1.96 × 10?3 dyn, 4.05 × 10?19 dyn·cm2 and 3.28 × 10?19 dyn·cm2 for poly(L -alanine), respectively.  相似文献

The electrophoretic mobility of L5178Y cells in 0.0145 M NaCl, 4.5% sorbitol, 0.6 mM NaHCO3, pH 7.2, at 25°C was — 1.78 μ·s?1·V?1·cm?1 while that of an L-asparaginase resistant subline, L5178Y/ASN, was — 1.11 μm·s?1·V?1·cm?1. Both cell lines were characterized by terminal sialic acid residues on their surfaces. Treatment of L5178Y cells for 90 min with 10 units of L-asparaginase per ml in saline decreased the electrophoretic mobility of the cells to — 1.65 μm·s?1·V?1·cm?1 while treatment in Fischer's medium decreased the mobility to — 1.25 μm·s?1·V?1·cm?1; neither treatment had a significant effect on the L5178Y/ASN electrophoretic mobility. The results suggest that L-asparaginase has an immediate and specific effect on synthesis of cell surface asparaginyl glycoproteins.  相似文献

Grazing and growth of Pfiesteria piscicida (Pfiest) were investigated using batch and cyclostat cultures with Rhodomonas sp. (Rhod) as prey. Observed maximum growth rates (1.4 d?1) and population densities (2 × 105 cells·mL?1) corresponded to values predicted by Monod functions (1.76 d?1; 1.4 × 105 cells·mL?1). In batch cultures under a range of prey‐to‐predator ratios (0.1:1 to 180:1) and prey concentrations (1000–71,000 cells·mL?1), Rhodomonas sp. was always depleted rapidly and P. piscicida concentrations increased briefly. The rate of Rhodomonas sp. depletion and the magnitude of P. piscicida population maxima depended on the prey‐to‐predator ratio and prey concentration. Starvation resulted in cell cycle arrest at G1 and G2+M and ultimately the demise of both P. piscicida and Rhodomonas sp. populations, demonstrating the dependence of P. piscicida on the supply of appropriate prey. The depletion of Rhodomonas sp. populations could be attributed directly to grazing, because P. piscicida did not exert detectable inhibitory effects on the growth of Rhodomonas sp. but grazed intensely, with maximum grazing rates>10 Rhod·Pfiest?1·d?1 and with no apparent threshold prey abundance for grazing. The results suggest that 1) the abundance of appropriate prey may be an important factor regulating P. piscicida abundance in nature, 2) P. piscicida may control prey population, and 3) high growth and grazing potentials of P. piscicida along with cell cycle arrest may confer survival advantages.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were used to examine how variation in the density of spore settlement influences gametophyte growth, reproduction, and subsequent sporophyte production in the kelps Pterygophora californica Ruprecht and Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Ag. In still (non-aerated) cultures, egg maturation in both species was delayed when spores were seeded at densities 300 · mm?2. Although the density at which this inhibition was first observed was similar for both species, the age at which their eggs matured was not. P. californica females reached sexual maturity an average of 4 days (or ~ 30%) sooner than did M, pyrifera. As observed previously in field experiments, per capita sporophyte production was negatively density dependent for both species when seeded at spore densities of 10 · mm?2. Total sporophyte production (i.e. number · cm?2) for both species, however, was greatest at intermediate densities of spore settlement (~ 50 spores · mm?2). In contrast, total sporophyte production by P. californica steadily increased with increasing spore density in aerated cultures; highest sporophyte density was observed on slides seeded at a density of 1000 spores · mm?2. Preliminary experiments with P. californica involving manipulation of aeration and nutrients indicate that inhibition of gametophyte growth and reproduction at higher densities of spore settlement in non-aerated cultures was probably caused by nutrient limitation.  相似文献

Efforts to increase the productivity of microalgal cultures have been focused on the improvement of photobioreactors, but little attention has been paid to the nutritional requirements of microalgae in order to improve culture media formulation. In this study, the main goal was obtaining a high productivity for Tetraselmis suecica (Chlorophyta) in semicontinuous culture by adding magnesium (Mg), silicon (Si), and strontium (Sr) at concentrations from 0.01 to 10 mM; at the time, the effect on steady-state cell density, biochemical composition, and antioxidant activity of T. suecica was evaluated. Because productivity is higher in high-density cultures, the work was focused many times to cell density. Mg (3 mM) and Sr (0.1 mM) added separately reached the highest steady-state cell density (7.0?×?106?±?0.4 cells mL?1) in comparison to control (4.2?±?0.1 cells mL?1), but simultaneous addition had a synergic effect, achieving 8.7?×?106?±?0.6 cells mL?1. Silicon (3 mM) significantly affected the steady-state cell density, reaching 6.0?±?0.3 cells mL?1 and increased the cell ash-free dry weight, reaching 127?±?7.9 pg cell?1 in comparison to control (102.7?±?5.0 pg cell?1), resulting in an ash-free dry weight productivity of 0.75?±?0.07 g?L?1 day?1. The highest fatty acids content and antioxidant activity, measured by 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method were obtained with Sr 10 mM. Sr treatments showed a high correlation (R 2?=?0.98) between DPPH inhibition and polyphenolic content, explaining its high antioxidant activity. Therefore, the addition of Mg, Si, and Sr to culture medium of T. suecica is recommended to achieve high steady-state cell density in semicontinuous cultures.  相似文献

A study was made with a modulated oxygen electrode of the effect of variations of oxygen concentration on photosynthetic oxygen evolution from algal cells. When Chlorella vulgaris is examined with a modulated 650 nm light at 22°C, both the oxygen yield and the phase lag between the modulated oxygen signal and the light modulations have virtually constant values between 800 and 120 ergs · cm?1 · s?1 if the bathing medium is in equilibrium with the air. Similar results are obtained at 32°C between 1600 and 120 ergs · cm?2 · s?1. Under anerobic conditions both the oxygen yield and the phase lag decrease if the light intensity is lowered below about 500 ergs · cm?2 · s?1 at 22°C or about 1000 ergs · cm?2 · s?1 at 32°C. A modulated 706 nm beam also gives rise to these phenomena but only at significantly lower rates of oxygen evolution. The cells of Anacystis nidulans and Porphyridium cruentum appear to react in the same way to anaerobic conditions as C. vulgaris. An examination of possible mechanisms to explain these results was performed using a computer simulation of photosynthetic electron transport. The simulation suggests that a backflow of electrons from a redox pool between the Photosystems to the rate-limiting reaction between Photosystem II and the water-splitting act can cause a decrease in oxygen yield and phase lag. If the pool between the Photosystems is in a very reduced state a significant cyclic flow is expected, whereas if the pool is largely oxidized little or no cyclic flow should occur. It is shown that the effects of 706 nm illumination and removal of oxygen can be interpreted in accordance with these proposals. Since a partial inhibition of oxygen evolution by 3-(3.4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (10?8 M) magnifies the decreases in oxygen yield and phase lag, it is proposed that the pool which cycles back electrons is in front of the site of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea inhibition and is probably the initial electron acceptor pool after Photosystem II.  相似文献

The small (< 15 μm) hypnozygote of an autotrophic athecate dinofiagellate found in association with Antarctic sea ice had an external covering composed of approximately 60 plates, each of which was bounded by sutural ridging and possessed an intratabular process. A cingulum and sulcus were also evident. The ultrastructure of the cyst was increasingly dominated by storage bodies as the cyst matured, and the cell wall thickened from 0.2 to 0.8 μm over 2 months. This cyst has been encountered often but usually at low abundances (103?104 cells·L?1); however, the maximum abundances observed (106 cells·L?1) indicate that the formation of this cyst may play an important part in the ecology of sea ice communities.  相似文献
