The present study was carried out to determine an optimum honeybee colony’s carrying capacity of selected valleys dominated by Ziziphus spina-christi and Acacia tortilis in the Al-Baha region, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The study was conducted based on the assessment of the number of colonies kept, their productivities and the existing productive bee forage resources in the target valleys with its economic implication. In the existing beekeeping practice, the average number of managed honeybee colonies introduced per square kilometer was 530 and 317 during the flowering period of Z. spina-christi and A. tortilis, respectively. Furthermore, the overall ratios of productive bee forage plants to the number of honeybee colonies introduced were 0.55 and 11.12 to Ziziphus trees and A. tortilis shrubs respectively. In the existing situation the average honey production potential of 5.21 and 0.34 kg was recorded per Ziziphus and A. tortilis plants per flowering season, respectively. The present study, revealed that the number of honeybee colonies introduced in relation to the existing bee forage potential was extremely overcrowding which is beyond the carrying capacity of bee forage resources in selected valleys and it has been observed to affect the productivities and subsequent profitability of beekeeping. The study infers that, by keeping the optimum honeybee colony’s carrying capacity of valleys (88 traditional hives/km2 or 54 Langstroth hives/km2 in Ziziphus field and 72 traditional hives/km2 or 44 Langstroth hives/km2 in A. tortilis field), profitability of beekeeping can be boosted up to 130.39% and 207.98% during Z. spina-christi and A. tortilis, flowering seasons, respectively.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to assess the seasonal population dynamics and evaluate the performance of Apis mellifera jemenitica (local bee) and introduced hybrid honeybee colonies in the lowlands and highlands of southwestern Saudi Arabia. Data regarding the performance and population dynamics parameters such as brood and adult bee population, amounts of stored pollen and nectar were gathered from the two races (25 colonies of each) for one year (April 2013 through March 2014), and statistically tested. The results indicated that at low lands, local bee colonies maintained relatively high brood and adult bee populations (P < 0.05) than introduced honeybee colonies and produced more (P < 0.05) honey. The local bee colonies were able to hoard three times more (P < 0.05) pollen and built more (P < 0.05) queen cells than introduced bees in both the low and highland areas. The annual survival rate of local bee colonies was almost double (P < 0.05) than that of introduced honeybee colonies. Moreover, local bees had greater (P < 0.05) adult bee and brood populations than imported, throughout the year. The relatively good performance of local colonies could be due to their long year’s adaptation to cope with resource scarcity and unpredictable environmental conditions of the regions. The possible reasons for the dwindling of the imported hybrid colonies could be due to continuing to exhibit adaptive characteristics of their original that might not fit well with the new environment.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to study the dynamics of parasitic nematode larvae of sheep (third larval stage), in tropical forage species. The experiment was composed of two different dry matter yield for each plant species, Pensacola grass (Paspalum saurae) and Aruana grass (Panicum maximum). The animals in the experiment were 28 Suffolk lambs that were 6–8 months old. Lambs were left in a naturally contaminated pasture for 86 days. A randomized design was adopted, collection of pasture was made every 15 days, separated into upper and lower portions and made larval enumeration. Lambs were evaluated by faecal egg count (FEC) to monitoring worm infection. The number of parasite larvae in both forages was similar (p > 0.05). However, higher (p < 0.05) infestation by helminth larvae in forage with lower dry matter yield, was observed in the upper portion of both plants studied. Animals with lower forage yield, for both forages, presented superior averages (p < 0.05) of FEC compared to higher forage yield pasture. Lambs grazing on Pensacola grass, with lower dry matter yield, showed increasing FECs over time. Lambs maintained on the pasture with higher yield of dry matter (Aruana) showed decreasing FECs over time. Similar results were observed when each pasture type was analysed for larval contamination. Epidemiologic and management implications are discussed in this work.  相似文献

Our objective was to evaluate the usefulness of the germination vs. the X-ray test in determining the initial viability of seeds of five wild species (Moringa peregrina, Abrus precatorius, Arthrocnemum macrostachyum, Acacia ehrenbergiana and Acacia tortilis) from Saudi Arabia. Usually several days were required to determine the viability of all five species via germination tests. However, X-ray test will give immediate results on filled/viable seeds. Seeds of all species, except Acacia ehrenbergiana and Acacia tortilis showed high viability in both germination (96–72% at 25/15 °C, 94–70% at 35/25 °C) and X-ray (100–80%) test. Furthermore, there was a general agreement between the germination (19%, 14% at 25/15 °C and 17% and 12% at 35/25 °C) and X-ray (8%, 4%) tests in which seed viability of Acacia ehrenbergiana and Acacia tortilis was very low due to insect damaged embryo as shown in X-ray analysis. Seeds of Abruspreca torius have physical dormancy, which was broken by scarification in concentrated sulfuric acid (10 min), and they exhibited high viability in both the germination (83% at 25/15 °C and 81% at 35/25 °C) and X-ray (96%) tests. Most of the nongerminated seeds of the five species except those of Acacia ehrenbergiana and Acacia tortilis, were alive as judged by the tetrazolium test (TZ). Thus, for the five species examined, the X-ray test was proved to be a good and rapid predictor of seed viability.  相似文献

Varroa mite is the most destructive pest to bee colonies worldwide. In Saudi Arabia, preliminary data indicated high infestation levels in the exotic honeybee colonies; such as Apis mellifera carnica and Apis mellifera ligustica, compared to native honeybee subspecies Apis mellifera jemenitica, which may imply higher tolerance to Varroasis. In this study, fertility and reproductive rate of Varroa mite, Varroa destructor, in capped brood cells of the native honeybee subspecies were investigated and compared with an exotic honeybee subspecies, A. m. carnica. Mite fertility was almost alike (87.5% and 89.4%) in the native and craniolan colonies respectively. Similarly, results did not show significant differences in reproduction rate between both subspecies (F = 0.66, Pr > F = 0.42). Number of adult Varroa daughters per fertile mother mite was 2.0 and 2.1 for native and craniolan honeybee subspecies respectively. This may indicate that mechanisms of keeping low infestation rates in the native honeybee colonies are not associated with Varroa reproduction. Therefore, potential factors of keeping lower Varroa infestation rates in native honey bee subspecies should be further investigated.  相似文献

This study aimed at evaluating forage intake and digestibility in ruminants using fecal nitrogen content, as well as validating a non-linear model to estimate digestibility in ruminants. A total of 58 conventional metabolism trials, carried out with sheep fed 27 forages (offered pure or in mixture) used in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) during the period 1969–1989 was analyzed. OM intake and OM digestibility (OMD) results were regressed linearly against fecal N, and OMD was also estimated from fecal crude protein (N × 6.25) content by a non-linear regression model. Fecal nitrogen excretion estimated forage intake in sheep with an R2 = 0.73, whereas a low R2 value of 0.36 was observed for OMD estimates. The equation obtained using the non-linear model was OMD = 0.7326 ? 0.3598 exp [(?0.9052 CP (g/kg OM))/100]. The parameters a (0.7326) and b (0.3598) estimated by the equation for all forages were significant (P<0.00001) and there was no effect of type of forage (P=0.38). The mean prediction error (MSPE), was 0.2379, indicating that the equation fit well to the data. The difference between estimated and observed organic matter digestibility was mainly caused by random variation (0.9765). The results indicated that the equation using the non-linear model developed with all forages can be used with enough precision to estimate the OM digestibility of forage consumed by sheep in Rio Grande do Sul.  相似文献

The objective was to identify legume shrub species for development of agroforestry technologies based on seed and forage (leaves and twigs < 10 mm diameter) yield, and determinants of forage quality. Ten individual plants of Bituminaria bituminosa ‘Ecotypes 1’, B. bituminosa ‘Ecotypes 2’, Medicago citrina, and M. arborea from Spain; Colutea istria and Onobrychis aurantiaca from Syria; C. istria from Jordan; Chamaecytisus mollis from Morocco; and Coronilla glauca from France were randomly selected from plots established in a non-tropical dryland environment in northwest Syria in 2000. Five individual plants of each species were cut back to 0.5 m above ground in March 2004. Coppice regrowths were pruned in December 2004 and April 2005 to determine forage yield and proportion of forage in the total above ground biomass (PEFB). Forage samples were analyzed for concentrations of crude protein (CP), lignin(sa), acid detergent fibre (ADFom), neutral detergent fibre (aNDFom), in vitro organic matter (OM) digestibility (IVOMD), and in vitro 24 h gas production (IVGP24h). Matured seeds were hand harvested from the remaining five plants of each species to estimate seed yield. Forage (21–250 kg DM/ha) and seed (0–200 kg DM/ha) yields; PEFB (0.22–0.96); and concentrations of CP (85–115 g/kg DM), lignin(sa) (14–42 g/kg DM), ADFom (94–170 g/kg DM), aNDFom (122–217 g/kg DM), IVOMD (456–617 g/kg OM), and IVGP24h (27–42 ml 200 mg/DM) varied (P<0.05) among shrub species. The IVOMD and IVGP24h were positively correlated (r = 0.75, P<0.032), whereas IVOMD and IVGP24h were negatively correlated with ADFom, lignin(sa) and aNDFom. In terms of forage and seed yields and determinants of forage quality, C. istria from Jordan, M. arborea, B. bituminosa ‘Ecotype-2’, C. istria and O. aurantiaca have higher potential than C. mollis, C. glauca and B. Bituminosa ‘Ecotype-1’ for the development of agroforestry technologies in non-tropical dry areas.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS), applied to forage and/or faeces, to estimate the in vivo organic matter digestibility (OMD) and the organic matter voluntary intake (OMVI, g/kg metabolic weight [BW0.75]) for a wide range of temperate forages. Two different databases, in terms of forage species and development stages were studied. The first one included two grass species and two forage mixtures for which OMD and OMVI were continuously measured during the grass-growing seasons (spring and summer). The second one contained a large set of grass and legume species and forage mixtures (142 trials) for which OMD and OMVI were measured.Forage and faeces samples were submitted to NIRS analysis and predictive calibrations were developed from forage spectra, faeces spectra, forage and faeces subtracted spectra, and faeces and forage concatenated spectra. Working on faecal spectra (alone or concatenated) enabled us to develop the best calibration equations for both OMD and OMVI estimation. The coefficient of determination (R2) was greater than 0.8. The standard error of cross validation (SECV) for OMD and OMVI was 0.021 and 4.51 g/kg BW0.75, respectively, and the accuracy was similar to that obtained with other predictive methods. With regard to the faecal spectra (second derivative mode), the fat absorbency at wavelengths of 1730, 2310 and 2350 nm was higher when the corresponding forage was highly digestible and ingestible. In conclusion, applying NIRS to faeces is a rapid and easy analytical method that could be an interesting tool for managing grazing ruminants and optimising their performance.  相似文献

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), oat (Avena sativa L.) and rye (Secale cereale L.) were overseeded into a dormant bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) sod and harvested on six dates throughout the spring. Plant growth stage was documented for each forage on each harvest date, and harvested forages were subsequently evaluated for forage quality characteristics. Four ruminally cannulated steers were used to evaluate disappearance kinetics of nitrogen (N) by an in situ method. All forages had high concentrations of N (≥31.1 g kg−1 DM) throughout harvest dates in March. By 15 April, rye had reached a substantially more advanced growth stage than either wheat or oat. This trait, coupled with the concurrent taller growth habit, caused concentrations of N in rye to decline (P<0.05) rapidly between the 24 March and 4 May harvest dates. The effective ruminal disappearance of N remained high (≥790 g kg−1 N) for all forages harvested through mid-April, thereby indicating that these cereal-grain forages exhibit the same characteristics of high N disappearance and low potential ruminal escape that are commonly observed in other high-quality cool season grasses harvested at similar growth stages. The effective disappearance of N reached a minimum (P<0.05) for all forages immediately before grain fill. Generally, substantial increases (P<0.05) in effective ruminal disappearance of N were observed as these forages partitioned N into the filling grain head. Fractional rates of N disappearance for wheat and rye were extremely rapid (≥0.383 h−1) during grain fill. However, rye also exhibited an extremely rapid disappearance rate (0.548 h−1) immediately prior to the onset of grain fill that was not observed for wheat (0.085 h−1) at an identical growth stage. Parameters associated with disappearance kinetics can be related to growth stage at harvest by linear and polynomial regression techniques, although the best fit model was dependent on forage type.  相似文献

The purpose of this experiment was to determine if different methods of forage conservation influenced horse preference for conserved forages. Silage, haylage with two different dry matter (DM) levels and hay was produced from the same grass crop at the same botanical maturity stage. Four horses were simultaneously offered the four forages (1 kg DM of each forage) once daily for four consecutive experimental periods, each period consisting of 5 days. On each experimental day, the horses were observed for 2 h and their first choice, eating time and forage consumption was registered for every forage. The number of times each horse depleted individual forages and the number of times each horse tasted or smelled a forage, but left it in favour of another forage, was also recorded. Silage had the highest rate of consumption (0.90 kg DM/day, S.D. 0.14) and longest eating time (28.4 min/day, S.D. 5.16). Hay had the lowest rate of consumption (0.23 kg DM/day, S.D. 0.14) and shortest eating time (6.8 min/day, S.D. 4.08), while the haylages were intermediate. Silage was the first choice 72 of 84 times (85%). Hay was never completely consumed and silage was never left in favour of another forage after smelling or tasting it. We conclude that the forage conservation methods had an impact on horse preference in favour of silage, even if the reason for silage preference remains to be explained.  相似文献

Considering the potentiality of honey in combating diseases, the present study was carried out aiming to assess the in vitro antiprotozoal activity of several honeys (Ziziphus spina-christi, Acacia nilotica, Acacia seyal, and Cucurbita maxima) against Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia by employing the sub-culture method. All the tested honeys inhibited the growth of trophozoites, and the level of inhibition varied according to the assayed concentrations and incubation times. Acacia seyal honey had completely stopped motility of E. histolytica trophozoites at a concentration  50 µg/ml after incubation for 72 h. Ziziphus spina-christi, Acacia seyal, and Acacia nilotica honeys had completely inhibited the growth of Giardia lamblia trophozoites at concentration  200 µg/ml after 72 h. These inhibitory activities were similar to that of Metronidazole? which showed IC50 = 0.27. The mammalian cytotoxicity of these honeys against normal Vero cell line which determined by applying MTT method verified the nontoxicity of the examined honeys. Also the proximate composition of the samples indicated compliance with the natural honey standards. The findings of the study indicate the need for in vivo studies and further investigations to identify active principles with antiprotozoal activities from natural honeys.  相似文献

The diet selection, ingestive and digestive responses of goats and sheep offered a single forage, which was prepared with three staple lengths: long (L), medium (M) and short (S) (mean particle size (mm): 13.29, 7.26 and 0.69, respectively) were studied in three experiments. The sheep (Scottish Blackface wethers) increased their dry matter intake (sheep DMI: 60.1, 61.1 and 66.2 g DM/(kg W0.75) per day for L, M and S) and reduced mean retention time (MRT) of the undigested residues (sheep MRT: 54.6, 52.9 and 45.9 h for L, M and S) and digestive efficiency (sheep DM digestibility: 0.524, 0.522 and 0.493 for L, M and S) with the reduction in forage particle size. The respective responses of goats (feral crosses) were not modified with forage staple length (goat DMI: 68.1, 65.9 and 67.3 g DM/(kg W0.75) per day for L, M and S); (goat MRT: 38.7, 39.3 and 41.1 h for L, M and S); (goat DM digestibility: 0.495, 0.475 and 0.480 for L, M and S). However, both species had similar intakes of digestible dry matter (DDMI) on all staple lengths (mean DDMI: 32.0 and 32.6 g DDM/(kg W0.75) per day for sheep and goats). On the longer staple lengths (L and M) goats masticated the fibre into smaller particles than did sheep and had (P<0.01) a greater proportion of small particles in their boli (mean: 0.45 and 0.30 for goats and sheep). The selection of components within the forage offered was different for the two species. Goats consumed forage of lower nitrogen (N) (P<0.01) and in vitro organic matter digestibility (OMD) (P<0.05) and higher neutral detergent fibre (NDF) (P<0.01) contents than sheep. This was associated with the residues from sheep having a coarser texture than those of goats. When the forages of different staple lengths were offered in pairs to the animals, there was no evidence for selection of forage types by either species. It would appear that the greater ability of goats to chew efficiently provides a reason for the different responses to staple length in intake, digestibility and MRT by the two species.  相似文献

We conducted this study to determine the diversity patterns, community structures, and seasonality of ground beetle assemblages along an altitudinal gradient (437–1420 m) on Mt. Sobaeksan, Korea. Ground beetles were collected by pitfall traps installed along an altitudinal gradient (437, 757, 1100, and 1420 m). A total of 32 species belonging to seven subfamilies were identified from 3259 collected ground beetles. The diversity pattern of the ground beetle assemblage according to altitude was neither monotonic decreased nor hump-shaped. However, subfamily assemblages and wing form diversity patterns differed according to altitude and may be correlated with altitude or some other environmental variables. The dominant species were Synuchus cycloderus (29.4%) and Eucarabus sternbergi sobaeksanensis (15.4%) and their seasonal activities according to altitude were similar. According to non-metric multidimensional scaling, ground beetles and altitudes could be divided into two distinct groups: a low altitude group (437–757 m) and a high altitude group (1100–1420 m). Some species were particularly abundant at high altitudes, such as Aulonocarabus koreanus kwonileeique and Poecilus nitidicollis, while others were highly abundant at low altitudes, such as Pterostichus audax, Pterostichus ishikawai, and Synuchus species.  相似文献

Long-term in situ incubations were performed to verify the likelihood of the heterogeneity concept of the potentially digestible fraction of the insoluble fiber (NDFom) by fitting both heterogeneous and homogeneous potentially digestible NDFom versions of a generalized compartmental model of digestion (GCMD). Corn silage and eleven tropical grasses and alfalfa hay were studied. Data were gathered from a study in which forage samples in nylon bags were incubated in rumen cannulated steers so that three profiles per forage were generated. The incubation endpoint was used to form sets of time profiles. The original set consisted of profiles ending at 1440 h, and the other two were formed by using 96 and 240 h as the incubation endpoints, respectively. The indigestible residue was estimated using nonlinear least squares or by assuming it to be 2.4 times lignin determined by the sulphuric acid method (Lignin (sa)). Therefore, eight different models were evaluated by combining end points of digestion, and the homogeneous and heterogeneous versions of GCMD with the two ways of estimating the indigestible residue. The likelihood of the models was assessed by computing Akaike information criteria. The effects of forage, model, and their interaction were analyzed by taking model as a repeated measurement. Heterogeneity of the potentially degradable fraction for NDFom was detected with long-term incubation trials (up to 1440 h) for some forages, and the introduction of the 2.4×Lignin (sa) as a direct measure of the indigestible residue improved the likelihood of the heterogeneous version of GCMD. The forage by model interaction was significant for many comparable parameter estimates, which means that specific and inconsistent results for models within forages were produced depending on the definition of the incubation end-point. The indigestible residue was overestimated with short-term incubation profiles, but the overestimation was lower for the profiles ending at 240 h whether compared to profiles ending at 96 h. Given the likelihood of the heterogeneous version of GCMD fitted to profiles ending at 1440 h and at 240 h for some forages, the heterogeneity concept should be investigated whenever the research interest relies on estimating the kinetic attributes of the degradation profiles of the NDFom in situ.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate how level of forage and oils in ruminant animals’ diet affect selected strains of ruminal bacteria believed to be involved in biohydrogenation (BH). Four continuous culture fermenters were used in 4 × 4 Latin square design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement over four consecutive periods of 10 days each. The experimental diets used in this study were: high forage diet (700:300 g/kg (DM basis) forage to concentrate; HFC), high forage with oil supplement (HFO), high forage diet (300:700 g/kg (DM basis) forage to concentrate; LFC), and high forage with oil supplement (HFO). The oil supplement was a blend of fish oil (FO) and soybean oil (SBO) added at 10 and 20 g/kg DM, respectively. Acetate concentration was greater (P<0.01) with the high forage diets whereas propionate concentration was greater (P<0.02) with the low forage diets and both decreased (P<0.05) with oil supplementation. The concentrations of t11 C18:1 (vaccenic acid, VA) and c9t11 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) were greater (P<0.01) with the high than the low forage diets and concentrations increased (P<0.01) with oil supplementation particularly when added with the high forage diet. The concentrations of t10 C18:1 and t10c12 CLA were greater (P<0.01) with the low than the high forage diets and concentrations increased (P<0.01) with oil supplementation particularly when added with the low forage diet. The DNA abundance of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens, Ruminococcus albus, Ruminococcus flavefaciens, Anaerovibrio lipolytica and Butyrivibrio proteoclasticum were greater (P<0.03) with the high than the low forage diets. Oil supplementation reduced (P<0.05) the DNA abundance only for R. flavefaciens, B. fibrisolvens and R. albus especially when added with the high forage diet. Results from this study suggest that the greater trans fatty acids (FA) production seen with the high forage diets may be related to greater activity of B. fibrisolvens, R. flavefaciens and R. albus, and B. proteoclasticum appears to play a minor role in the production of C18:0 from trans C18:1.  相似文献

A study was conducted in the Sahelian zone of Burkina Faso of the behaviour of cattle, sheep and goats on natural pasture and their preference for browse species. Concurrently, a survey was undertaken on a sample of farmers (herders, women and livestock owners) in the study area to estimate the indigenous knowledge of browse species and their utilisation by ruminants. A herd of cattle and flocks of sheep and goats belonging to farmers were followed on pasture, each species during three consecutive days each month, from May 2003 to April 2004, and their activities were recorded regularly every 15 min, as well as the browse species selected and the height reached while browsing. The farmers had good knowledge of the browse species present in the area and their preferential classification depended on the availability of the species, their nutritive value and also other ways of utilising the species concerned. However, some divergence existed in the knowledge of farmers compared to the result from the behaviour study, e.g. some species were mentioned by farmers but not found in the inventory. There was a decline in the feeding activities of all animal species from rainy to dry season, while resting and ruminating activities were increasing at the same time. This decline in time spent feeding was more important for cattle (from 72 to 39% of total time) as they relied on the herbaceous biomass for feeding, while sheep and goats made a shift in the feeding activities from grazing to browsing when the herbaceous biomass decreased. Cattle browsed (leaves and litter) during all the study period for around 4.5% of the time spent on pasture. Sheep and goats showed a peak in browsing activity in the dry season, 28 and 52% of the time, respectively. During the whole observation period, cattle browsed 10 species, with Guiera senegalensis most often selected, with 59, 54 and 84% of browsing time, respectively, in the rainy, post rainy and dry season. G. senegalensis, Combretum micranthum and Balanites aegyptiaca were the most important species browsed by sheep among the 20 browse species selected. Goats browsed more than 20 species daily but the most preferred species were Acacia senegal, B. aegyptiaca and Pterocarpus lucens. The mean height reached by goats when browsing was higher (1.65 m) than that of cattle (1.47 m) and sheep (0.87 m). The result from this study can be used to select species for regeneration and to advice farmers on the importance of herd composition.  相似文献

This research is the first record of the infection of Apis florea by Nosema ceranae, a newly identified pathogen of honeybee in Thailand which was initially isolated from A. florea workers. Each Nosema free-bee was fed 2 μl of 50% (w/v) sucrose solution containing 0, 10,000 20,000 or 40,000 Nosema spores/bee. The survival rates of treated bees were significantly lower compared to control bees. Infectivity was not statistically different among the three spore concentrations, whereas no infection was found in control bees. Protein content of control bee hypopharyngeal glands 14 days post inoculation (p.i) was significantly higher (21.47 ± 0.17 mg/bee) compared to all treatments. The infection ratio of bees treated with 40,000 spores/bee increased with time after inoculation. These results suggest that N. ceranae has a significant negative effect on honeybee hypopharyngeal gland protein production and contributes to their shortened life span.  相似文献

Citrus pulp is an important by-product for sub-tropical and tropical ruminant animal production. In this study, three steers (average body weight = 324 ± 16 kg) were randomly assigned to three levels of pelleted citrus pulp (PCP) supplementation (0, 1.25, and 2.5 kg animal−1 d−1; as-fed) in a 3 × 3 Latin square design to evaluate its effects on forage intake, digestion, and ruminal pH. The basal diet was stargrass (Cynodon nlemfuensis) harvested and chopped every day and fed fresh. Supplementation with increasing amounts of PCP tended (P≤0.10) to result in a linear increase in digestibility of total diet dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM), but no effects were noticed for digestibility of forage DM or total diet neutral detergent fiber. Forage DM intake decreased linearly (P=0.03) with increasing PCP supplementation, although the decrease tended (quadratic; P=0.08) to be of greater magnitude at the highest level of supplementation. Both a linear increase (P<0.01) and a quadratic trend (greatest increase with first level of supplementation; P=0.09) were also observed for intake of total digestible OM. Average ruminal pH was between 6.6 and 7.2 and was not affected (P=0.29) by supplementation treatment. Although supplementation with PCP depressed forage consumption somewhat, little effect on forage digestion was observed. The provision of digestible OM in the form of supplement was greater than that lost via depressed forage consumption, resulting in an overall increase in energy supply. Our results suggest that high levels of citrus pulp to beef cattle can lower forage intake, but increase total energy intake. High levels of citrus pulp supplementation could be beneficial in combination with forages high in rumen dagradable protein. Systems using grasses with higher ruminally degradable protein content than we used, may benefit from this extra supply of energy which should be tested in a further experiment.  相似文献

Leaves and twigs from shrub species consumed by range goats: Acacia berlandieri, Acacia farnesiana, Acacia greggii, Acacia rigidula, Celtis pallida, Cercidium macrum, Condalia obovata, Cordia boissieri, Desmanthus virgathus, Leucaena leucocephala, Leucophyllum texanum, Opuntia lindehimieri, Porlieria angustifolia, Prosopis glandulosa, and Ziziphus obtusifolia were evaluated for comparative seasonal contents of Ca, P, Mg K, Zn, Mn, Cu and Fe. Plants were collected in summer (September 12, 1992), fall (November 20, 1992), winter (February 20, 1993) and spring (May 22, 1993) in Marı́n, County, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. During spring and summer mineral concentrations were higher in general. Only Ca, Mg, K, and Fe were in substantial amounts in all seasons to meet adult goat requirements. With the exception of spring, shrubs had extremely low P concentrations. Manganese, Cu and Zn in most plants had low marginal levels to meet adult goat requirements. Moreover, potential intake of P, Mn, Cu and Zn in shrub species by goats weighing 50 kg BW consuming 2.0 kg per day DM was low. However, plants such as D. virgathus, L. texanum, P. glandulosa, L. leucocephala and C. macrum can be considered prominent components in diets of range goats because of their high mineral concentrations. It appears that ration formulations for range goats in northeastern Mexico should include P, Mn, Cu and Zn in all seasons of the year.  相似文献

The contribution of a bee plant species to honey production depends on the plant’s nectar secretion quality and quantity, which is mainly governed by biotic and abiotic factors. The aim of the current study, was to investigate the nectar secretion dynamics and honey production potential of 14 major bee plant species of the target area. We examined the quantity and dynamics of nectar sugar per flower five times a day using a nectar sugar washing technique and direct measuring of nectar with calibrated capillary tubes. The average nectar sugar amount of the species varied from 0.41 mg/flower to 7.7 mg/flower (P < 0.0001). The honey sugar per flower was used to extrapolate the honey production potential per plant and per hectare of land. Accordingly the honey production potential of the species observed to vary from 14 kg/hectare in Otostegia fruticosa to 829 kg/hectare in Ziziphus spina-christi. The nectar secretion dynamics of the species generally showed an increasing trend early in the morning, peaking toward midday, followed by a decline but different species observed to have different peak nectar secretion times. Generally, the tree species secreted more nectar sugar/flower than the herbs. The nectar secretion amount of the species was positively correlated with the ambient temperature, indicating the adaptation of the species to hot climatic conditions. However, different species were observed to have a different optimum temperature for peak nectar secretion. Despite the limited rainfall and high temperature of the area, many plants were found to have good potential for honey production. The monetary value of honey per hectare of the studied honeybee plant species can be of equal or greater than the per-hectare monetary value of some cultivated crops that require numerous inputs. In addition, the information generated is believed to be useful in apiary site selection and to estimate the honey bee colony carrying capacity of an area.  相似文献
