SUMMARY.
  • 1 A choice chamber experiment was performed in the laboratory to quantify the selection of benthic algae as food and substrata by Nais elinguis.
  • 2 Most worms actively chose filamentous algae and/or diatoms as substrata whereas unicellular or colonial chiorophycean algae were discriminated against. Diatoms were selected in preference to latex beads but the worms could not discriminate between living filaments and nylon monofilaments. A thigmotactic response to filaments and a chemotactic response to diatoms may be implicated.
  • 3 The worms ingested unicellular algae at a greater rate than colonial and filamentous algae. The rates at which the algae were ingested were negatively correlated with the lengths of the algae. A filament 200 μm long was the largest item ingested, representing about 63% of the length of the pharynx of the worm.
  • 4 Ivlev's electlvity indices were positive when the rates at which the algae were ingested exceeded about 20 individuals h-1. The index was negatively correlated with the lengths of the algae, but the time periods spent by the worms in association with the algae were unrelated to the electivity index.
  • 5 The data confirmed previous observations on the selection of algae as food and substrata by Nais elinguis in a natural habitat.

Grazing of fluorescent latex beads, bacteria, and various species of phytoplankton by Poterioochromonas malhamensis (Pringsheim) Peterfi (about 8.0 μm in diameter) was surveyed. The alga ingested fluorescent beads and various live or killed and nomnotile or motile organisms including bacteria, blue-green algae, green algae, diatoms, and chrysomonads. The size range of grazed prey was from 0.1 to 6.0 μm for latex beads and from 1.0 μm (bacteria) to about 21 μm (Carteria inverse) for organisms. As many as 17 latex beads (2.0 μm) or more than 10 Microcystis cells (5–6 μm) were ingested by a single P. malhamensis cell. Following such grazing, the cell increased in volume by up to about 30-fold. The range of cell volume of ingested prey was from 0.52 μm3 (bacteria) to about 3178 μm3(Carteria inversa). This study demonstrates for the first time that P. malhamensis is capable of grazing algae 2–3 times larger in diameter than its own cell and of grazing intact motile algae. Poterioochromonas malhamensis is an omnivorous grazer. Food vacuole formation and digestion processes were examined. The membrane that was derived from the plasma membrane and surrounded the prey disappeared sometime after ingestion. The food vacuole was then formed by successive fusion of numerous homogeneous vesicles accumulated around the prey. The prey was enclosed in a single membrane-bound food vacuole and then digested.  相似文献

On sedimentary tidal flats in the Wadden Sea near the Island of Sylt, the periwinkleLittorina littorea occurred preferentially on clusters and beds of mussels and on shell beds (100 to 350 m−2), achieved moderate densities on green algal patches or mats (20 to 50 m−2), and remained rare on bare sediments (<5 m−2). Green algae covering>10% of sediment surface appeared in summer on approximately one third of the tidal zone, mainly in the upper and sheltered parts and almost never on mussel and shell beds. In feeding experiments,L. littorea ingested more of the dominant alge,Enteromorpha, than ofUlva, irrespective of whether or not algae were fresh or decaying. The tough thalli ofChaetomorpha were hardly consumed. Snails feeding onEnteromorpha produced fecal pellets from which new growth ofEnteromorpha started. In the absence of periwinkles,Enteromorpha developed on mussels and the attached fucoids. Experimentally increased snail densities on sediments prevented green algal development, but the snails were unable to graze down established algal mats. It is concluded that natural densities ofL. littorea hardly affect the ephemeral mass development of green algae on sediments. However, where the snails occur at high densities, i.e. on mussel beds, green algal development may be prevented.  相似文献

Die aus Länge, Breite und Grundform der Faeces berechneten durchschnittlichen Volumina liegen zwischen 13 × 103 µm3 für beide Geschlechter der ArtOithona similis und 348 × 103 µm3 für die Kotballen der Weibchen der ArtAcartia bifilosa.3. Die Dimensionen der Faeces der vier untersuchten Arten zeigen in mindestens einem der untersuchten Parameter signifikante Unterschiede. Im Falle der ArtenAcartia bifilosa undCentropages hamatus sind auch die Größen der Kotballen beider Geschlechter signifikant verschieden.4. Ein Vergleich von Labor- und Freilanduntersuchungen zeigt, daß die in sedimentiertem Seston gefundenen Faeces planktischer Copepoden sich mit Hilfe der experimentell gefundenen Charakteristika den dominierenden Arten zuordnen lassen.
Species-characteristics of the fecal pellets of four dominating copepod species of Kiel bight
Mean length, width and shape of the fecal pellets of the four planktonic copepod species,Acartia bifilosa, Centropages hamatus, Oithona similis andPseudocalanus elongatus, were studied. Mean volumes of the fecal pellets of the different species vary between 13 × 103 µm3 (males and females ofOithona similis) and 348 × 103 µm3 (females ofAcartia bifilosa). The dimensions of the fecal pellets of the four species examined reveal significant differences in at least one of the criteria studied. InAcartia bifilosa andCentropages hamatus even the length and width of the fecal pellets of the two sexes are different. With respect to the characteristics described, a comparison made between fecal pellets found in cultures with those obtained from sediment of the Baltic Sea (Kiel Bight) has shown that the latter may be attributed to the copepod species under consideration.

Kinetics of nitrate uptake by freshwater algae   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
The kinetics of nitrate (NO3 ) uptake, the maximum uptake velocity (Vm) and the half-saturation constant (Ks), were determined for 18 species of batch-cultured freshwater algae grown without nitrogen limitation. Values of Ks ranged from 0.25 to 6.94 µM l–1 Chlorella pyrenoidosa Chick, and Navicula pelliculosa (Breb.) Hilse, respectively. Values of Vm ranged from 0.51 to 5.07 µM l–1 h–1 for Anabaena A7214 and Nitzschia W-32 O'Kelley, respectively. The mean positive values of Ks for Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta and Chrysophyta were 1.89, 3.67 and 4.07 µM l–1, respectively. The mean values of Vm for the same phyla were 1.61, 1.02 and 2.97 µM l–1 h–1 105 cells–1, respectively. The ranges of these kinetic parameters encompass values of kinetic parameters for marine and freshwater species in batch culture, for freshwater algae grown in N-limited chemostats and for natural populations of freshwater phytoplankton. Thus, in spite of variability between species, uptake parameters for both marine and freshwater algae are identical.  相似文献

The factors influencing the composition, structure and density of benthic invertebrate communities in Yellowknife Bay in the Canadian subarctic were determined between June 1975 and April 1977. Attached algae, primarily Fragilaria vaucheriae, Fragilaria pinnata, Cymbella ventricosa and Cocconeis placentula were ingested in large numbers by several dominant species including the oligochaetes Rhyacodrilus sodalis, Lumbriculus variegatus and Limnodrilus claparendeianus and the mollusc Valvata sincera helicoidea. Although up to 7 × 105 cells/oligochaeta, representing 65% by volume of the gut contents, were recorded for littoral zone populations, specimens in the profundal zone contained < 7.5 × 104 cells in their guts. V. sincera helicoidea also ingested large numbers of attached algae (up to 2.3 × 104 cells/animal), these representing 15–18% by volume of the gut contents. Consequently, multiple regression analysis indicated that the availability of attached algae was the major factor influencing the benthic communities. While 31–64% of the population variability could be accounted for by this factor, other parameters such as phytoplankton availability, water depth, temperature, dissolved oxygen levels, total amount of food in the gut, and the organic content of the sediments had little if any direct effect on the benthic populations.  相似文献

Summary Nais elinguis was offered equal densities of three algal species under controlled conditions. Colonies of Scenedesmus quadricauda were ingested at significantly lower rates than cell of Nitzschia kutzingiana and Chlorella vulgaris. Labelled cells of N. kutzingiana were more rapidly and more efficiently assimilated than those of the other algae. Cells of S. quadricauda were viable in the faeces.This work confirmed conclusions from other studies with respect to the role of algae in the nutrition of Nais elinguis and other freshwater benthic herbivores.  相似文献

Clearance rates of sessile rotifers: in vitro determinations   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
We measured laboratory clearance rates of 10 rotifer and one unidentified bryozoan species from 3 different lakes using 32P labeled algae (Chlamydomonas) or yeast (Rhodotorula). Clearance rates for all rotifers fed yeast ranged from < 2.0 to > 260 µl · animal–1 · h–1 depending on species. The in vitro clearance rates of two sessile rotifers (Ptygura crystallina and P. pilula) were not significantly different from previously measured in situ rates (Wallace and Starkweather 1983). Clearance rates for 5 rotifers fed algae ranged from < 5.0 to > 90.0 µl · animal–1 · h–1. Ptygura beauchampi, P. crystallina, P. pilula, Floscularia conifera, and F. melicerta ingested both cell types but their clearance rates varied substantially among species and between cell types. There was a substantial time-dependent loss of 32P from formalin-fixed animals (Sinantherina socialis) awaiting processing. This loss stabilized at approximately 20 hours and was estimated to be about 40% of the initial ingested label. Clearance rates for the bryozoan fed yeast or algae were highly variable, ranging from < 1.0 to > 3 000 µl · animal–1 · h–1.  相似文献

Phyto- and bacterioplankton biomass and activity were simultaneously measured during the course of one year in the shallow Créteil Lake (France).Phytoplankton was dominated, during the whole year, by small-sized organisms (10 to 25 µm). Bacteria were in a majority small coccoids (<0.3 µm). Phyto -and bacterioplankton abundances averaged respectively 3.3 × 106 cells l–1 and 6 × 109 cells l–1.The phasing of the activity and biomass periods suggest a close coupling between phyto- and bacterioplankton. There were two distinct periods of high activity and biomass. Maximal values were observed in summer but an early increase occurred also in winter. Low or undetectable phytoplankton excretion rates, when heterotrophic activity was maximum, indicated a bacterial uptake of up to 100% of the released algal products during the incubation period. Heterotrophic uptake measurements with both glucose and amino acids revealed a seasonal change of the substrates in the lake, glucose uptake being associated more with the maximum activity of the algae, while the amino acids uptake was relatively higher during their decline.The maximal photosynthetic rate averaged 21.5 mgC m–3 h–1 and mean Vmax values were 0.056 and 0.050 mgC m–3 h–1 respectively for glucose and amino acids uptake.  相似文献

Summary Results of testing a total of 145 hamsters in 2 separate trials (a total of 90 challenged animals) suggest the potentiality of HIF-coatedHistoplasma yeast cells as a vaccine. Animals challenged with 5×105 Histoplasma yeast cells in saline 3 weeks after initial inoculation with 5 × 104 Histoplasma yest cells in 1) saline or 2) crude HIF in kidney homogenate or 3) the active 280 mµ fraction thereof were protected by the 280 mµ fraction > the crude HIF > saline suspensions ofHistoplasma, based on analysis of tissue sections and cultures.It is suggested that since HIF has also been found in experimental blasomycosis it should be sought in other mycoses, perhaps in all infectious diseases, and its potential use in a vaccine preparation should be more extensively tested.Supported in part by Public Health Service Grant No. 1-SO-IFR-05359-01 to the senior author at The George Washington University.  相似文献

Cnida discharge in the actinian Anemonia starts with the extrusion of the capsule from the cnidocyte followed by the eversion of the tubule. As the tubule everts, it maintains a tightly closed tip until fully everted. This is considered to be essential for a capsule to discharge as a result of an increase in intracapsular pressure. Venom volumes were measured in 3 types of nematocyst: 408 µm3, 98 µm3, and 9 µm3. Venom flow rates were estimated to range from >43 to 324 µm3 s–1. It is suggested that the intracapsular pressures required for these flow rates range from 9.7 × 105 to 1.9 x 106 Pa.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of heterotrophic bacteria and four ultraphytoplanktonic (<10 µm) groups (Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus, pico- and nanoeukaryotes) was investigated by flow cytometry at three process stations located in three different sub-systems belonging to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current frontal zone and to the Southern Indian Ocean (60–66°E, 43–46°S; ANTARES 4 cruise, January-February 1999): the Subtropical Zone (STZ), the Convergence Zone and the Polar Frontal Zone (PFZ). In each sub-system, short-term variability of cell abundance and flow cytometric parameters (right-angle light scatter and chlorophyll autofluorescence) was assessed through a times series of up to 24 h with a 2 h sampling frequency. The ultraphytoplankton vertical distribution exhibited a high spatial variability, with dominance of Prochlorococcus in the STZ (mean: 762.85×1010 cells m–2), whereas picoeukaryotes (<3 µm) were dominant in the PFZ (55.46×1010 cells m–2), a typically high-nutrient low-chlorophyll zone. Heterotrophic bacteria abundance was maximum (9.84×1013 cells m–2) in the frontal zone, between the Agulhas Front and the Subtropical Front. Nanoeukaryotes showed the largest (up to 80%) variations between two consecutive sampling periods (2 h). Abundance variations could not be assigned to the same water mass during the time series due to the highly variable hydrodynamics of the study area. Trends of short-term abundance variations were opposite between the PFZ (lowest at night) and north of the Subtropical Front (highest at night). The observed spatial and short-term variations illustrate the complexity of the water masses in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, and highlight the challenge of extrapolating discrete measurements over space and time for use in evaluating carbon budgets in such dynamic areas.  相似文献

A comparative study has been carried out with FDP aldolases fromEscherichia coli 518 andLactobacillus casei ATCC 7469, which had been purified 17.6- and 65-fold, respectively. The aldolase ofL.casei was stable only in the presence of mercaptoethanol, whereas that ofE.coli was strongly inhibited at low (1.0×10–4 m) and activated at high concentrations (2.0×10–1 m) of the same compound.p-Chloromercuric benzoic acid inhibited both aldolases, with 40% inhibition at 2×10–5 m withE.coli aldolase against at 2×10–4 m withL.casei aldolase. Significant differences were also observed in pH optima and Km values.E.coli aldolase exhibited a maximal activity at pH 9.0 and gave a Km value of 1.76×10–3 m FDP with strong substrate inhibition above 7×10–3 m, against pH 6.8–7.0 and a Km of 7.04×10–3 m FDP forL.casei aldolase. Strong resistance ofL.casei aldolase against inhibition by EDTA, Ca2+ and Mn2+ was observed compared with complete inhibition at concentrations of 20mm, 40mm and 20mm, respectively, withE. coli aldolase. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis did not reveal any differences between the two enzyme preparations.The differences of the properties of FDP aldolases from different bacterial genera are discussed in relation to other Class II aldolases.  相似文献

The epiphytic algae on surfaces of the macrophyte Ranunculus penicillatus (Dumort.) Bab. var. calcareus (R. W. Butcher) C. D. K. Cook and on Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kütz growing in the River Itchen at Otterbourne near Southampton were studied between February 1984 and June 1985. The river at this site has a mean flow rate of 0.33 m s–1, and is about 16 m wide and on average 20 cm deep, with a discharge ranging through the year between 0.34 and 2.46 m3 s–1. The pH of the river varies little around 8.2, with a mean alkalinity of 236 mg HCO inf3 sup1 l–1, because of its origin from chalk springs. Ranunculus grows throughout the year, with peaks of biomass in spring and autumn. It forms a very large surface for attachment of epiphytes, and covers on average 40% of the stream bed. Numbers of epiphyte cells removed from Ranunculus ranged through the year between 52 × 103 and 271 × 103 cells mm–2 stream floor, with maximum numbers in April, and a secondary peak in October. This pattern partly reflects fluctuations in the biomass of Ranunculus; the number of cells per unit area of plant surface showed a broader spring peak and lower fluctuations in other seasons. Diatoms formed 65 to 98% of these epiphyte cells, with chlorophytes reaching their peak (10%) in summer and cyanophytes (25%) in autumn. Estimates of biomass of these epiphytic forms, derived from measurements of chlorophyll c, indicate a range between 30 and 100 g dry weight m–2 of weed bed. Colonisation studies showed that the algae grow and reproduce throughout the year, with a mean generation time of about 5 days, suggesting an annual production of about 3 kg dry weight m–2 of weed bed, which makes epiphytic algae the principal primary producers in the stream. The numbers and biomass of epiphytic algae on Cladophora are considerably less.The species of epiphytic algae found on Ranunculus were generally similar to those growing on Cladophora, and to epilithic algae on pebbles of the stream bed, but different species were dominant on the different substrata. Algal cells in the water column were all derived from benthic habitats, although their relative abundance was very different.  相似文献

Primary production of phytoplankton and secondary production of a daphnid and a chaoborid were studied in a small eutrophic pond. The gross primary production of phytoplankton was 290 gC m−2 per 9 months during April–December. Regression analysis showed that the gross primary production was related to the incident solar radiation and the chlorophylla concentration and not to either total phosphorus or total inorganic nitrogen concentration. The mean chlorophylla concentration (14.2 mg m−3), however, was about half the expected value upon phosphorus loading of this pond. The mean zooplankton biomass was 1.60 g dry weight m−2, of whichDaphnia rosea and cyclopoid copepods amounted to 0.69 g dry weight m−2 and 0.61 g dry weight m−2, respectively. The production ofD. rosea was high during May–July and October and the level for the whole 9 months was 22.6 g dry weight m−2.Chaoborus flavicans produced 10 complete and one incomplete cohorts per year. Two consecutive cohorts overlapped during the growing season. The maximum density, the mean biomass, and the production were 19,100 m−2, 0.81 g dry weight m−2, and 11.7 g dry weight m−2yr−1, respectively. As no fish was present in this pond, the emerging biomass amounted to 69% of larval production. The production ofC. flavicans larvae was high in comparison with zooplankton production during August–September, when the larvae possibly fed not only on zooplankton but also algae.  相似文献

Summary Methods have been used for monitoring either volume flows or pressure changes, simultaneously with membrane potentials, in giant algal cells ofChara australis during an action potential. The volume flows were measured from the movement of a mercury bead in a capillary tube recorded by a photo-transducer. The pressure changes were measured by monitoring the deflection of a thin wedge, resting transversely across a cell, and using the same photo-transducer, the deflection of the wedge being directly related to the cell's turgor pressure. The average maximum rate of volume flow per unit area during an action potential was 0.88±0.11 nliter·sec–1·cm–2 in the direction of an outflow from the cell (total volume outflow being about 3 nliter·cm–2 per action potential). Similarly, the maximum rate of change of pressure was 19.6±3.8×10–3 atm·sec–1 (peak change being 19.3±2.9×10–3 atm equivalent to 14.7±2.2 mm Hg). The volume flow and pressure changes followed the vacuolar potential quite closely, the peak rate of volume flow lagging behind the peak of the action potential by 0.17±0.08 sec and the peak rate of pressure change leading it by 0.09±0.07 sec.  相似文献

Phosphate concentration of the growth medium was found to affect the growth rate and agar yield of a clone of Gelidium robustum grown in the laboratory. To study differences in growth we used phosphate concentrations from 0 to 200 µM. To determine the effect of phosphate on agar yield and its properties we used concentrations from 0 to 20 µM. Growth rates generally increased with increasing phosphate concentration, with the highest growth rate (21% d–1) obtained at 150 µM. Agar yield as percentage of fresh weight was highest (10%) in the algae grown with low phosphate concentrations, but agar yield as percentage of dry weight was highest(43%) at 20 µM of phosphate. Gel strength increased with phosphate concentration with a maximum of 160 g m–2 for 0.75% gels for the cultures at 20 µM. Melting and gelling temperatures of the gels were also affected by phosphate concentration of the growth medium. Starch yield was highest in algae grown in low phosphate concentrations.  相似文献

Summary The green parameciumParamecium bursaria has many endosymbiotic algae in its cytoplasm. Here, we cloned and characterized endosymbiotic algae fromP. bursaria and examined in detail the interaction between the cloned algae and algae-free paramecia. Homogenates ofP. bursaria were cultured on agar plates containing various kinds of media to establish clones of the endosymbiotic algae. Many algal colonies were obtained from poorly nutritious medium (CA medium) after one month in culture. Algae were picked up from these colonies and inoculations were repeated 9 times on agar plates containing CA medium. On enriched media including bacto-peptone, glucose, proteose-peptone and/or yeast extract, however, bacteria and mold grew rapidly and no algal colonies were formed. When the cloned algae were cultured in liquid CA medium, they grew faster than on agar plates and the numbers stayed constant at 1 × 107 algae/ml after 7 days in culture. They revealed high infectivity to algae-free paramecia, and an incubation period of 24 h and at least 1 × 103 algae/paramecium were required to achieve successful infection (80–90%). The growth and infection rate did not change through 74 repeated inoculations of algae in liquid CA medium. Optical microscopic observations revealed marked morphological similarity between endosymbiotic algae and free-livingChlorella, but the latter showed no infectivity to algae-free paramecia. The cloned endosymbiotic algae presented here will provide an excellent opportunity to examine the mechanism of symbiont-host interaction.  相似文献

Summary 1. On the seaward face of Port Erin breakwater large algae do not occur on the lowest three metres. Here the density ofEchinus esculentus is high.2. Over a three year period allEchinus were removed from a 10 m wide strip at about monthly intervals. The total number of individuals removed approached 3000.3. One year after initial clearance the mean density ofLaminaria hyperborea sporelings on the strip was 22.7/m2 and 5.1/m2 to one side of it. By the winter these had almost disappeared outside the strip and in the succeeding years second and third year plants were found only on the strip or close to its edge. Other algae were similarly affected.4. It is concluded that the lower limit ofL. hyperborea is determined at least in part by the grazing pressure ofEchinus and that the urchins exercise some control over the numbers of other algae.

Hier herrscht eine große Besiedlungsdichte des SeeigelsEchinus esculentus (3,6 Individuen pro m2). Über eine Zeitspanne von 3 Jahren wurden nun sämtlicheE. esculentus von einem 10 m breiten und 12 m langen Felsstreifen allmonatlich entfernt; insgesamt wurden dabei etwa 3000 Individuen abgesammelt. Ein Jahr nach Beginn des Absammelns betrug die mittlere Siedlungsdichte der jungenLaminaria hyperborea auf dem von Seeigeln freigehaltenen Felsstreifen 22,7/m2. In den folgenden Jahren wurden zwei- und dreijährigeL. hyperborea nur auf diesem Felsstreifen oder in der Nähe seiner Begrenzungen gefunden. Andere Algenarten reagierten in ähnlicher Weise. Aus den Befunden wird gefolgert, daß die untere Verbreitungsgrenze vonL. hyperborea zumindest zum Teil durch Seeigelfraß bestimmt wird, und daßE. esculentus die Siedlungsdichte der anderen Algenarten beeinflußt.

Biomass and production of plankton communities were investigated in two Chinese integrated fish culture ponds in August, Dianshanhu Pond (with high density of planktivorous carp) and Pingwang Pond (with low density of planktivorous carp). The plankton communities were composed of rotifers, protozoans, phytoplankton (<40 µm) and bacteria. The large phytoplankton (>40 µm), cladocerans and copepods were rare because of grazing pressure by the carp. The density or biomass of bacteria (1.93 × 107 and 2.20 × 107 cells ml–1 on average in Dianshanhu and Pingwang Ponds, respectively), picophytoplankton (24.6 and 18.5 mg m–3 Chla on average) and rotifers (5372 and 20733 ind. 1–1 on average) exceeded the maximum values reported for natural waters.The average [3H]thymidine uptake rates were 694 and 904 pmoles 1–1 h–1 (13.4 and 20.6 µgC 1–1) and the bacterial production by the >2 µm fraction amounted 21–28% of total [3H] thymidine uptake rate in both ponds. The mean chlorophylla concentrations were 59.1 and 183 mg m–3 in Dianshanhu and Pingwang Ponds, respectively. 82.4% and 65.3% of the total Chla was contributed by the <10 µm nano- and picophytoplankton in each pond, respectively. In particular, the picophytoplankton contribution amounted 41.2% of thtal Chla in Dianshanhu Pond. Primary production was 2.5 and 3.4 gC m–2 d–1 in each pond, respectively, and >50% of production was contributed by picophytoplankton. The mean biomasses of protozoa were 168 µg 1–1 and 445 µg 1–1 and those of rotifers were 763 µg 1–1 and 1186 µg 1–1 in Dianshanhu and Pingwang Ponds, respectively. The ecological efficiencies expressed in terms of the ratios of primary production to zooplankton production were 0.22 and 0.31, for the two ponds.  相似文献
