This paper reports the successful excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) through 1D metallic grating on higher refractive index GaP substrate. Coupling efficiency (η) of a free-space transverse-magnetic (TM) plane-wave mode into a SPP mode is crucial for many plasmonic devices. This η predominantly depends on the fabrication (milling) parameters and the factors (under- and over-milling) affecting the η is investigated experimentally and numerically. First of all, η is estimated by measuring the transmission spectra obtained through the plasmonic grating structures by varying the slit width (a) for a fixed period (Λ) and the thickness (t) of the gold (Au) film in which the grating is formed. The wave vector of the incident light is tuned to match the wave vector of the SPP, to get maximum η. For an optimum Au film thickness, a slit width of half of the periodicity of 770 nm in the grating device yields a maximum η. Such grating devices support only a fundamental plasmonic mode because the profile/shape of the slit in the grating device is more like a sinusoidal nature. Furthermore, such grating offers intermediate scattering to the incident light and the SPP as well which in-truns couple more incident energy to the SPPs. Moreover, over-milling results in decreased η where the crystalline plane of the substrate is disturbed. Finite element method (FEM) in COMSOL modeling is used to understand the underlying physics. This paper reports the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and associated plasmonic band gap (PBG) while using TM plane wave interacting with 1D metallic grating on higher refractive index GaP substrate. A simple method is introduced to estimate the PBG which is crucial for many plasmonic devices. The PBG is estimated by measuring the transmission spectra obtained through the plasmonic grating structures when slit width is varied while periodicity and the thickness of the gold (Au) film remained fixed. The PBG is observed for the grating devices whose slit width is less than one third of the periodicity which is caused by the presence of a higher plasmonic mode. The PBG is absent for the grating device whose slit width is slightly less than half and greater than one third of the periodicity. Such grating devices support only a fundamental plasmonic mode because the profile/shape of the slit in the grating device is more like a sinusoidal nature. Furthermore, such grating offers intermediate scattering to the incident light and the SPP as well which in turn couple more incident energy to the SPPs. Far-field modelling results also support the results obtained through experiment.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a hybrid technique which results from combining intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) for the treatment of cervical cancer patients. Plans made with the hybrid technique and pure IMRT and VMAT were retrospectively compared in 20 patients with cervical cancer at different stages. All plans were made using the same contours based on the original computed tomography (CT) scans. Conformity (CI) and homogeneity (HI) indices of the planning target volumes (PTVs) were calculated for each technique in order to evaluate plan quality. All techniques were compared in terms of dose to organs at risk (OARs), number of monitor units (MUs) and treatment time. It turned out that plans made with the hybrid technique had improved dose conformity and homogeneity compared to plans made only with IMRT and VMAT (p < 0.001). Regarding the OARs, the maximum dose (Dmax) delivered to the bladder, rectum and femoral heads was lower for the hybrid plans compared to the IMRT and VMAT plans (p < 0.001). The volumes irradiated to doses of 50 Gy (V50Gy) for rectum, bladder and bowel were lower for the hybrid plans (p < 0.001, p = 0.002). Furthermore, the treatment time and MU values for the hybrid plans were found to be between of the values for the IMRT and VMAT plans. It is concluded that, as compared to IMRT and VMAT plans, the hybrid plan technique allowed a better conformity and homogeneity for the dose distribution in the PTV and a dose reduction to the OARs.

Introduction

An increased body mass index (BMI) (>25 kg/m2) is associated with a wide range of electrocardiographic changes. However, the association between electrocardiographic changes and BMI in healthy young individuals with a normal BMI (18.5–25 kg/m2) is unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between BMI and electrocardiographic parameters.

Methods

Data from 1,290 volunteers aged 18 to 30 years collected at our centre were analysed. Only subjects considered healthy by a physician after review of collected data with a normal BMI and in sinus rhythm were included in the analysis. Subjects with a normal BMI (18.5–25 kg/m2) were divided into BMI quartiles analysis and a backward multivariate regression analysis with a normal BMI as a continuous variable was performed.

Results

Mean age was 22.7 ± 3.0 years, mean BMI was 22.0, and 73.4% were male. There were significant differences between the BMI quartiles in terms of maximum P-wave duration, P-wave balance, total P-wave area in lead V1, PR-interval duration, and heart axis. In the multivariate model maximum P-wave duration (standardised coefficient (SC) = +0.112, P < 0.001), P-wave balance in lead V1 (SC = +0.072, P < 0.001), heart axis (SC = −0.164, P < 0.001), and Sokolow-Lyon voltage (SC = −0.097, P < 0.001) were independently associated with BMI.

Conclusion

Increased BMI was related with discrete electrocardiographic alterations including an increased P-wave duration, increased P-wave balance, a leftward shift of the heart axis, and decreased Sokolow-Lyon voltage on a standard twelve lead electrocardiogram in healthy young individuals with a normal BMI.

A strain of Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) BYS2 was previously isolated from Mount Tai, which is located in Tai’an City in the Shandong Province of China. The strain was then stored in the Environmental Microbiology Laboratory at Shandong Agricultural University. To evaluate the effect of the bacterium preparation in broiler production, we fed the bacterium (106 CFU/g) to 1-day-old broilers and continued this feeding for 6 weeks to analyze its effect on growth and immune performance. We found that the average weight of the bacterium-fed group increased by 17.19% at weeks 5 compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The height of the villi in the duodenum and jejunum and the ratio of villi to crypt were significantly increased in the bacterium-fed group at weeks 5 (P < 0.05). Also, the IgG in the serum of broilers in the experimental group increased by 31.60% (P < 0.05) and IgM 30.52% (P < 0.05) compared with those in the control group. The expressions of the major pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), antiviral proteins, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and β-defensins were significantly higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the bursa immune organ indices of broilers in the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05). Also, after 5 weeks of continuous feeding, when infected with Escherichia coli (E. coli) O1K1 and Newcastle disease virus (NDV) F48E8, the content of bacteria and virus in tissues and organs of the experimental group decreased significantly, and the survival rate of infected chickens increased by 31.1% and 17.7%, respectively (P < 0.05). These results show that the anti-infective B. subtilis BYS2 could, to some extent, replace antibiotics to promote growth, improve innate immunity, and enhance disease resistance in broilers.

We are proposing graphene (G)-based multilayered plasmonic spatial switch, operating at 10 THz. It is composed of hBN/Ag/hBN/G/hBN/G/hBN/SiO2/p+-Si multilayers. When a 10-THz transverse magnetic (TM)-polarized signal is normally incident upon the structure top surface, the nanoaperture devised in the Ag nanolayer, acting as a grating, excites surface plasmons at the top graphene micro-ribbons/hBN interface. These surface plasmons depending on the graphenes chemical potentials can be coupled to the lower-right or left graphene micro-ribbons and continue to propagate laterally towards the corresponding output port. Numerical simulations show that a change of ∆VG ≈ ± 2.7 V in the voltage, applied to the gated micro-ribbons, can modulate their chemical potentials sufficiently to switch the right (left) output port from ON (OFF) to OFF(ON) and vice versa. Besides its low power consumption, the switch ultra-small dimensions make it a potential spatial router suitable for THz-integrated circuit applications.

The present study was conducted to assess the effects of combined and singular dietary administration of PrimaLac® and potassium diformate (KDF) on growth performance, feed utilization, digestive enzymes activity, and some physiological parameters of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) juvenile. Three hundred sixty rainbow trout juveniles (25 ± 1.8 g) were randomly stocked in 300-L tanks (30 fish/tank), and fed three times daily on a basal diet (control), diets incorporated with 12 g kg−1 KDF (FT1), 1.5 g kg−1 PrimaLac® (FT2), and combination of 1.5 g kg−1 probiotic and 12 g kg−1 KDF (FT3) in triplicates, for 8 weeks. At the end of feeding trial, growth performance, body composition, digestive enzymes, liver enzymes, and biochemical parameters were measured. Our results revealed that combined administration of PrimaLac® and KDF (FT3) exhibited significantly higher weight gain and specific growth rate (SGR) compared to other groups (P < 0.05). Glucose and cortisol levels showed no significant differences between fish fed different test diets (P > 0.05). The highest lipase, protease and amylase activity were observed in group of fish fed FT3 followed by FT2 and FT1. Besides, the diets FT2 and FT3 led to significantly lower of ALP, ALT, and AST compared to control group. The present results indicated that combined administration of PrimaLac® and KDF can be considered as a beneficial feed additive and growth promotor for O. mykiss juvenile.

Aims

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a treatment for patients with refractory angina pectoris (RAP) who remain symptomatic despite optimal medical therapy and without revascularisation options. Previous studies have shown that SCS improves the quality of life in this patient group and reduces the severity of the angina pectoris. The aim of this prospective, single-arm observational study is to show this effect in a single-centre cohort using a multidisciplinary team approach to the selection process, with a follow-up period of 1 year.

Methods and results

Between July 2010 and March 2017, 87 patients with RAP referred to our centre received SCS. The Seattle Angina Questionnaire (SAQ) and RAND 36-Item Health Survey (RAND-36) were completed at baseline, prior to implantation, and 1 year post-implantation. After 1 year of follow-up there was a statistically significant decrease in the frequency of angina pectoris attacks from more than 4 times a day to 1–2 times a week (p < 0.001). The SAQ showed statistically significant improvement in four of the five dimensions: physical limitation (p < 0.001), angina frequency (p < 0.001), angina stability (p < 0.001) and quality of life (p < 0.001). The RAND-36 showed statistically significant improvement in all nine dimensions: physical functioning (p = 0.001), role/physical (p < 0.001), social functioning (p = 0.03), role/emotional (p < 0.05), bodily pain (p < 0.001), general health (p < 0.001), vitality (p < 0.001), mental health (p = 0.02) and health change (p < 0.001).

Conclusion

This study showed a significant improvement in quality of life and reduction of angina pectoris severity after 1 year of follow-up in patients treated with SCS for RAP.

The effects of enterocin (Ent) M and sage extract applied separately and in combination were investigated. EntM (E 50 μL/animal/day in water) and sage extract (S 10 μL/animal/day in water) were applied individually and in combination (E+S) to rabbits during 21 days of treatment. The rabbits’ growth was not significantly influenced by the additives. Lower feed conversion (FC) was noted in the experimental groups compared with controls, with the lowest data detected in E. The antimicrobial activity of EntM was noted (in E+S: lactic acid bacteria—P < 0.01; in E, E+S: enterococci, enterobacteria—P > 0.05; in E: clostridia—P > 0.05). The most significant changes in fermentation between weaned and older rabbits were noted in amylolytic activity at day 21 (E P < 0.05; E + S P < 0.05); prolonged reduction effect of sage extract on amylolytic activity was observed. The activity of cellulase, pectinase and xylanase was higher in older than in younger animals. Decrease in lactic acid and volatile fatty acids was noted during EntM administration, with significant effect on propionic acid concentration (E P < 0.05; E+S P < 0.001). The sage extract reduced propionic acid (S P < 0.001) and butyric acid levels (S P < 0.05) and increased the concentrations of butyric, iso-valeric, valeric, caproic acids and lactic acid (P < 0.001). It seems to be that EntM and sage supplementation may improve the economy of rabbit farms (increased FC) and the health status of rabbits (reduction of spoilage microbiota, enhanced enzymatic activities in caecum).

The primary aim of our study was to determine the influence of taking chromium plus carnitine on insulin resistance, with a secondary objective of evaluating the influences on lipid profiles and weight loss in overweight subjects with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In a 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 54 overweight women were randomly assigned to receive either supplements (200 μg/day chromium picolinate plus 1000 mg/day carnitine) or placebo (27/each group). Chromium and carnitine co-supplementation decreased weight (− 3.6 ± 1.8 vs. − 1.0 ± 0.7 kg, P < 0.001), BMI (− 1.3 ± 0.7 vs. − 0.3 ± 0.3 kg/m2, P < 0.001), fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (− 5.1 ± 6.0 vs. − 1.1 ± 4.9 mg/dL, P = 0.01), insulin (− 2.0 ± 1.4 vs. − 0.2 ± 1.2 μIU/mL, P < 0.001), insulin resistance (− 0.5 ± 0.4 vs. − 0.04 ± 0.3, P < 0.001), triglycerides (− 18.0 ± 25.2 vs. + 5.5 ± 14.4 mg/dL, P < 0.001), total (− 17.0 ± 20.3 vs. + 3.6 ± 12.0 mg/dL, P < 0.001), and LDL cholesterol (− 13.3 ± 19.2 vs. + 1.4 ± 13.3 mg/dL, P = 0.002), and elevated insulin sensitivity (+ 0.007 ± 0.005 vs. + 0.002 ± 0.005, P < 0.001). In addition, co-supplementation upregulated peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (P = 0.02) and low-density lipoprotein receptor expression (P = 0.02). Overall, chromium and carnitine co-supplementation for 12 weeks to overweight women with PCOS had beneficial effects on body weight, glycemic control, lipid profiles except HDL cholesterol levels, and gene expression of PPAR-γ and LDLR. Relations are given allowing the calculation of intrinsic viscosity, diffusion constant, and related molecular weights of monodisperse subfractions of polydisperse samples from the measured averages of the hydrodynamic quantities and the individual (reduced) sedimentation constant distribution. The peculiarities resulting from the special behavior of semirigid polymers like DNA are treated. Expressions are derived which describe the dependence of the exponents as(aηs = aη/as), and aη of the relations so = ksMas [η] = kηs(so)aηs, and [η] = kηMaη on so and [η], respectively, and which are useful for practical and theoretical discussions of the wormlike chain. Furthermore, a generalized exponent rule for aη and as has been suggested, considering the dependence of the Mandelkern-Flory-Scheraga parameter β(?Φ1/3P?1) on molecular weight. Sixty-week-old Hy-Line brown laying hens were randomly divided into five groups and fed different diets over a period of 84 days. Experimental treatments included a basal diet (control); the basal diet supplemented with 1.0 × 106B. licheniformis yb-214245; the basal diet supplemented with 1.0 × 106B. subtilis yb-114246; a combination of both strains in a 2:1 ratio (6.6 × 105:3.3 × 105B. licheniformis yb-214245:B. subtilis yb-114246); and the latter, added with 5 mg/kg flavomycin. Basal diet supplementation with the combined Bacillus species improved egg-laying performance in aging hens significantly (P < 0.05). Eggshell strength improved significantly with this treatment, compared to the control or the antibiotic-supplemented groups (P < 0.05). The levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in egg yolk declined significantly more in the Bacillus-treated group than in the control or the antibiotic-supplemented groups (P < 0.01). Small intestinal morphology was better in the hens treated with the Bacillus combination than in the hens in the control group (P < 0.05). The total number of aerobic bacteria (Bacillus, Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacterium) in the cecum was significantly higher in all the Bacillus-supplemented hens than either in the control or the antibiotic-supplemented hens (P < 0.01); additionally, the number of E. coli and Salmonella was significantly lower than in the control group (P < 0.01). In conclusion, diet supplementation with the combination of Bacillus species used here for aging laying hens improved their growth performance, cecal bacterial composition, egg quality, and small intestine morphology.

The interactions between sodium caseinate (NaCas) and basil seed gum (BSG) in the presence of calcium chloride (CaCl2) were investigated. The phase behavior of the mixed aqueous dispersions and their gels revealed a homogeneous mixture, obtained at the higher concentrations of both CaCl2 and BSG. The Herschel-Bulkley model sufficiently fitted the flow behavior of the mixture solution data. Apparent viscosity increased significantly (p < 0.05) by increasing the concentration of BSG, where the addition of CaCl2 had no significant effect on the viscosity of the samples (p > 0.05). Furthermore, there was an increase in thixotropy due to the higher concentrations of BSG and CaCl2. Based on the frequency sweep test, at the low frequencies, a more gel-like behavior was observed in the case of the higher concentrations of either BSG or CaCl2. The rheological and SEM data suggested that the stronger structure of NaCas-BSG gel in the presence of the higher concentrations of CaCl2 was related to the induction of complex formation between the two biopolymers.

The effect of dietary supplementation with a synbiotic mixture of galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) and Bacillus spp. was examined in Caspian salmon, Salmo trutta caspius (Kessler, 1877) fingerlings. Caspian salmon fed with the synbiotic diet had significantly higher weight gain rate, protein efficiency ratio, and survival rate, as well as lower feed conversion ratio, compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The serum protein, albumin, globulin, and lactate dehydrogenase levels of the fish fed with the synbiotic diet were significantly higher than the control group (P < 0.05), while the serum alkaline phosphatase levels were significantly lower (P < 0.05). The activities of the innate immune response parameters, including lysozyme, superoxide dismutase, and catalase were significantly higher in the Caspian salmon fed with the synbiotic diet (P < 0.05). The gut microbiota of the Caspian salmon fed with the synbiotic diet contained significantly elevated total viable aerobic bacterial counts (TVABCs), lactic acid bacteria (LAB) levels, and LAB/TVABCs ratio (P < 0.05). Additionally, the gut activities of amylase, trypsin, and chymotrypsin in the gut, as well as the trypsin/chymotrypsin ratio, were significantly increased in the fish that received the synbiotic diet (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the combined GOS and Bacillus spp. supplement positively affected the growth, survival rate, immunobiochemical parameters, digestive activity, and beneficial microbial density in the gut of Caspian salmon fingerlings.

Background

Patients after aortic coarctation (CoA) repair show impaired aortic bioelasticity and altered left ventricular (LV) mechanics, predisposing diastolic dysfunction. Our purpose was to assess aortic bioelasticity and LV properties in CoA patients who underwent endovascular stenting or surgery using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging.

Methods

Fifty CoA patients (20.5 ± 9.5 years) were examined by 3-Tesla CMR. Eighteen patients had previous stent implantation and 32 had surgical repair. We performed volumetric analysis of both ventricles (LV, RV) and left atrium (LA) to measure biventricular volumes, ejection fractions, left atrial (LA) volumes, and functional parameters (LAEFPassive, LAEFContractile, LAEFReservoir). Aortic distensibility and pulse wave velocity (PWV) were assessed. Native T1 mapping was applied to examine LV tissue properties. In twelve patients post-contrast T1 mapping was performed.

Results

LV, RV and LA parameters did not differ between the surgical and stent group. There was also no significant difference for aortic distensibility, PWV and T1 relaxation times. Aortic root distensibility correlated negatively with age, BMI, BSA and weight (p < 0.001). Native T1 values correlated negatively with age, weight, BSA and BMI (p < 0.001). Lower post-contrast T1 values were associated with lower aortic arch distensibility and higher aortic arch PWV (p < 0.001).

Conclusions

CoA patients after surgery or stent implantation did not show significant difference of aortic elasticity. Thus, presumably other factors like intrinsic aortic abnormalities might have a greater impact on aortic elasticity than the approach of repair. Interestingly, our data suggest that native T1 values are influenced by demographic characteristics.

A 42-day experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of dietary copper (Cu) concentrations on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and serum parameters in broilers aged from 1 to 42 days. Five hundred forty 1-day-old broilers were randomly assigned into 1 of the following 6 dietary treatments: (1) control (basal diet without supplemental Cu), (2) 15 mg/kg supplemental Cu (Cu15), (3) 30 mg/kg supplemental Cu (Cu30), (4) 60 mg/kg supplemental Cu (Cu60), (5) 120 mg/kg supplemental Cu (Cu120), and (6) 240 mg/kg supplemental Cu (Cu240), Cu as copper methionine. A 4-day metabolism trial was conducted during the last week of the experiment feeding. The results showed that dietary Cu supplementation increased the average daily gain and the average daily feed intake (P < 0.01). The feed gain ratio, however, was not affected by dietary Cu (P > 0.10). Additionally, dietary Cu supplementation increased the digestibility of fat and energy (P < 0.05). The concentration of serum cholesterol, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased with dietary Cu supplementation (P < 0.05). The activities of serum Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase (P < 0.05), glutathione peroxidase (P < 0.05), and ceruloplasmin (P = 0.09), on the contrary, were increased by Cu addition. For immune indexes, dietary Cu supplementation increased serum IgA and IgM (P < 0.05). In addition, the activities of serum ALT increased with increasing dietary Cu supplementation (P < 0.05). In conclusion, our data suggest that Cu supplementation can increase fat digestibility and promote growth. Additionally, dietary Cu supplementation can reduce serum cholesterol and enhance antioxidant capacity in broilers.

Spectrophotometric titrations of slightly substituted carboxymethylamylose (CM-Amy) and diethylaminoethylamylose (DEAE-Amy) with iodine in the presence of iodide (I2/I?) were carried out as a function of iodide concentration, temperature, and polymeric charge. Binding isotherms for the polymer-I2/I? complex are reported in terms of an apparent binding constant (Ka) plotted versus degree of saturation of the complex (θ). The dependence of Ka upon polymeric charge is interpreted as evidence for the negatively charged character of the bound species. The cooperative nature of the binding process is evident in the positive slope of Ka vs (θ). Whereas the apparent binding constants and binding cooperativities for the derivatives are smaller than for the amylose-I2/I? complex, the binding enthalpies deduced from the temperature dependence of Ka at θ = 0.5 appear to be the same for amylose and CM-Amy. A viscometric titration of fully charged CM-Amy with I2/I?, conducted at dialysis equilibrium between the CM-Amy-I2/I? solution and the polymer-free solvent phase, disclosed a maximum in the plot of intrinsic viscosity ([η]) vs θ. The increase in [η] at small θ was interpreted as a reflection of polyelectrolyte expansion provoked by absorption of the negatively charged bound species; the subsequent decline in [η] is attributed to stabilization by I2/I? of compact helical sequences or to the formation at higher θ of intermolecular aggregates.  相似文献

Bioactive peptides derived from chia (Salvia hispanica) seed with antioxidant, antihypertensive, and anti-inflammatory activities have been well documented; however, few studies describe the antimicrobial properties of these peptides, which is of great interest not only in the prevention of food-borne diseases but also food spoilage. The aim of this study was to generate chia seed peptides using microwave-assisted hydrolysis with sequential (alcalase + flavourzyme) enzymes (AF-MW), fractionate them into 3–10 and < 3 kDa fractions, and evaluate their potential antimicrobial activity towards Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, and Listeria monocytogenes. Overall, the peptide fraction < 3 kDa showed higher antimicrobial activity than both chia seed hydrolysate and peptide fraction 3–10 kDa. Furthermore, the < 3 kDa fraction showed remarkable increase in membrane permeability of E. coli (71.49% crystal violet uptake) and L. monocytogenes (80.10% crystal violet uptake). These peptides caused a significant extension in the lag phase, decreases in the maximum growth, and growth rate in the bacteria and promoted multiple indentations (transmembrane tunnels), membrane wrinkling, and pronounced deformations in the integrity of the bacterial cell membranes. Finally, a select group of peptides in the AF-MW < 3 kDa fraction contained 16 sequences with cationic and hydrophobic character, with seven of them sharing the exact same sequence (GDVIAIR) and eight of them having the amino acid K as either N- or C-terminal or both. In conclusion, our results indicate that bioactive peptides obtained from chia seed proteins by microwave and enzymatic hydrolysis could be employed as antimicrobial agents in foods and therapeutic applications.

The present study focused on developing a wild-type actinomycete isolate as a model for a non-pathogenic filamentous producer of biosurfactants. A total of 33 actinomycetes isolates were screened and their extracellular biosurfactants production was evaluated using olive oil as the main substrate. Out of 33 isolates, 32 showed positive results in the oil spreading technique (OST). All isolates showed good emulsification activity (E24) ranging from 84.1 to 95.8%. Based on OST and E24 values, isolate R1 was selected for further investigation in biosurfactant production in an agitated submerged fermentation. Phenotypic and genotypic analyses tentatively identified isolate R1 as a member of the Streptomyces genus. A submerged cultivation of Streptomyces sp. R1 was carried out in a 3-L stirred-tank bioreactor. The influence of impeller tip speed on volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient (k L a), growth, cell morphology and biosurfactant production was observed. It was found that the maximum biosurfactant production, indicated by the lowest surface tension measurement (40.5 ± 0.05 dynes/cm) was obtained at highest k L a value (50.94 h−1) regardless of agitation speed. The partially purified biosurfactant was obtained at a concentration of 7.19 g L−1, characterized as a lipopeptide biosurfactant and was found to be stable over a wide range of temperature (20–121 °C), pH (2–12) and salinity [5–20% (w/v) of NaCl].

Interaction behavior between surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and Hankel-distributed diffracted waves (DWs) on a silver concentric circular grating film is studied using a rigorous coupled-wave technique for circular structure. It is shown that the numerical technique reveals the excitation characteristics of SPPs in the circular metal grating as well as provides an accurate calculation of SPP intensities for further optimization designs. Results show that the SPPs can be excited by various DWs through the control of wavelength and angle of the incident light. The most efficient excitation of SPPs from this circular metal grating structure can be obtained from the +1st-order DW under a normal incidence with wavelength close to the grating period, and the optimal thickness and duty cycle of the grating are found to be 370 and 0.5 nm, respectively. It is shown that the optimized intensity of SPPs excited from circular metal grating can be higher than that from strip metal grating by over one order of magnitude.  相似文献
