The simultaneous influence of the photoperiodic and temperature conditions on pre-diapause and postdiapause larval development of the ringlet Aphantopus hyperantus was studied. At the short day (12 h of light a day) all larvae reached the III instar and entered diapause at all the temperatures tested (18–24°C). At the long day (22 h) the number of diapausing larvae increased with decreasing temperature, and the larvae diapaused at the III and IV instars. The I and II instar larvae (before winter) developed and grew faster under short-day, and the hibernated larvae, under long-day conditions. At the short day the growth rate of the I and II instar larvae did not depend on the temperature, and at the long day it decreased as the temperature increased. After hibernation the growth rate of the IV instar larvae increased with the temperature under long-day conditions, and did not depend on the temperature under short-day ones. Thus, acceleration or deceleration of development, depending on the photoperiodic and temperature conditions, regulated the timing of diapause in the overwintering stage (the III instar larva) and maintained the univoltine seasonal cycle. The males of A. hyperantus developed and grew faster than females while their weight at the larval and pupal stages was smaller. The thermal reaction norms for development (the lower temperature threshold and the coefficient of thermal sensitivity of development) were calculated for the eggs, IV and V instar larvae, and pupae. The coefficient of thermal sensitivity of development for the IV and V instar larvae taken together was lower, and the threshold was higher than the corresponding values for eggs and pupae. The thermal reaction norms for development of the latter stages were the same. The larvae of A. hyperantus retained their sensitivity to the photoperiod after hibernation. Resumption of development after cold reactivation occurred only under long-day conditions, whereas under short-day ones the overwintered larvae entered a repeated diapause. The possibility of photoperiodic reactivation and the absence of spontaneous resumption of development in these larvae were demonstrated.  相似文献

Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was reared on eggs ofRiptortus clavatus (Thunberg) (Heteroptera: Alydidae) at various temperatures under long-day (L16:D8) or short-day (L10:D14) conditions. There was no diapause during egg, larval or pupal stages under any set of conditions examined. However, at 15°C under short-day conditions, vitellogenesis was arrested in all adult females and they entered diapause. At 15°C under long-day conditions, or at 20°C under short-day conditions, some adult females entered diapause. Under the latter set of conditions, the adult females laid eggs but they laid fewer eggs than under long-day conditions, Even at 25°C, under short-day conditions, adult females laid fewer eggs than under long-day conditions, and this low rate of oviposition was attributed to the retarded development of ovaries. Diapause adults reared at 15°C were more resistant to low temperature than nondiapause adults reared at 25°C.  相似文献

Zoophytophagous plant bugs (Heteroptera, Miridae) increasingly attract interest as agents of biological plant protection. In the laboratory experiment, the effects of the day length and temperature on the duration of the pre-adult period and on induction of facultative winter adult diapause were studied in Dicyphus errans (Wolff, 1804) collected in Italy. The experiment demonstrated that at 20°C the duration of the pre-adult period of D. errans significantly depended on the day length. On average, females developed 1.3 days longer than males and, at the same time, the day length equally influenced the duration of the pre-adult period in both sexes. The pre-adult period was the shortest under short-day conditions (10 to 12 h of light per day), reached its maximum at day length of 14 h, but then decreased at 15 h, and at day length of 16 h it was as short as under short-day conditions. Also, a pronounced long-day type photoperiodic response of adult diapause induction was recorded in females of D. errans at 20°C: under short-day conditions (10 to 14 h of light per day) almost all females entered diapause, whereas under long-day conditions (15 and 16 h of light per day) about 90% of females were mature. The threshold of this photoperiodic response was close to 14 h 30 min. The mean (± S.D.) egg load of mature females was 6.3 ± 4.0 eggs per female and did not depend on the day length at which the female was reared before and after the final molt. When photoperiodic response of adult diapause induction was observed at two constant temperatures (20 and 25°C), the proportion of mature females depended significantly on the day length but not on the temperature: the shapes of the photoperiodic response curves of diapause induction were almost the same within the near-threshold zone at 20 and 25°C, i.e., the photoperiodic response was thermostable. The set of two photoperiodic responses manifested at different stages of the species’ life cycle has an obvious adaptive significance. In Central Europe, D. errans has 2 or 3 generations per year and hibernates at the adult stage. Due to the thermostable photoperiodic response, females enter diapause always at the same time at the end of summer, regardless of the weather conditions of a particular year. When oviposition and pre-adult development are extended over a prolonged period in summer, nymphs from the later eggs might not be able to molt to adults in due time and then fully prepare for stable winter diapause. Under such circumstances, the photoperiodic response controlling the rates of pre-adult development acquires apparent adaptive meaning: with an autumnal shortening of the day length to 10–12 h, even under conditions of seasonal decrease in temperature, the rates of nymphal development increase and, thus, the chances of nymphs from the later eggs to molt to adults and properly prepare for overwintering also increase. The new data should be taken into account when analyzing the seasonal cycle of D. errans and developing the programs of mass rearing of this zoophytophagous mirid as an agent of biological plant protection.

The cricket, Modicogryllus siamensis, shows clear photoperiodic responses at 25 degrees C in nymphal development. Under long-day conditions (LD16:8), nymphs became adults about 50 days after hatching, while under short-day conditions (LD8:16) the duration of nymphal stage extended to more than 130 days. Under constant dark conditions, two developmental patterns were observed: about 60% of crickets became adults slightly slower than under the long-day conditions, and the rest at later than 100 days after hatching, like those under the short-day conditions. When the compound eye was unilaterally removed on the 2nd day of hatching, an increase of molting and an extension of the nymphal period were observed under the long-day conditions, while under the short-day conditions, some crickets developed faster and others slower than intact crickets. These results suggest that this cricket receives photoperiodic information through the compound eye, that a pair of the compound eyes is required for a complete photoperiodic response, and that interaction between bilateral circadian clocks may be also involved in the response.  相似文献

Abstract.  Eggs laid by adult female Dianemobius nigrofasciatus , reared under long-day (LD 16 : 8 h, 25 °C) or short-day (LD 12 : 12 h, 25 °C) conditions from the nymphal stage, are kept at several constant temperatures. At 22.5–30.0 °C, eggs laid by long-day adults show lower incidences of diapause than those laid by short-day adults. In both eggs laid by adults under long-day conditions and those under short-day conditions, the higher the temperature at which the eggs are kept, the lower the incidence of diapause. When eggs of long-day adults are exposed to a low-temperature pulse (10 °C, 24 h) on the day of deposition (day 0), the incidence of diapause increases. The low-temperature pulse on day 1 does not increase the incidence of diapause. By contrast, when the eggs of short-day adults are exposed to a high-temperature pulse (35 °C, 24 h) on day 0 or day 1, the incidence of diapause decreases. The temperature pulses on day 0 are more effective at diapause prevention. Staining of diapause eggs by the Feulgen–Rossenbeck method shows that the eggs enter diapause at the blastoderm stage, which is on day 1 or day 2 at 25 °C. The exposure of adults to long days and higher temperatures prevents the eggs from entering diapause. In D. nigrofasciatus , embryonic diapause is controlled by maternal effects, adult photoperiod and temperature, and egg temperature before or at diapause.  相似文献

Abstract. The effect of photoperiod and temperature on the duration of the nymphal period, diapause induction and colour change in adults of Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) from Japan was studied in the laboratory. At 20 °C, the developmental period for nymphs was significantly shorter under LD 10 : 14 h (short day) and LD 16 : 8 h (long day) than under intermediate photoperiods, whereas at 25 °C it was slightly shorter under intermediate than short- and long-day conditions. It is assumed that photoperiod-mediated acceleration of nymphal growth takes place in autumn when day-length is short and it is unlikely that nymphal development is affected by day-length under summer long-day and hot conditions. Nezara viridula has an adult diapause controlled by a long-day photoperiodic response. At 20 °C and 25 °C in both sexes, photoperiodic responses were similar and had thresholds close to 12.5 h, thus suggesting that the response is thermostable within this range of temperatures and day-length plays a leading role in diapause induction. Precopulation and preoviposition periods were significantly longer under near-critical regimes than under long-day ones. Short-day and near-critical photoperiods induced a gradual change of adult colour from green to brown/russet. The rate of colour change was significantly higher under LD 10 : 14 h than under LD 13 : 11 h, suggesting that the colour change is strongly associated with diapause induction. The incidences of diapause or dark colour did not vary among genetically determined colour morphs, indicating that these morphs have a similar tendency to enter diapause and change colour in response to short-day conditions.  相似文献

Terrestrial slugs (Lehmannia valentiana) collected from a field in Osaka, southwestern Japan, were reared under long-day (16-h light and 8-h darkness, LD 16:8) or short-day conditions (LD 12:12) at 15, 20, or 25 degrees C for 60 days. Slugs reared under short-day conditions were heavier than those reared under long-day conditions; however, slugs reared at 15 degrees C gained more weight regardless of the photoperiodic condition. Gonads were significantly heavier under short-day conditions than under long-day conditions, and oogenesis and spermatogenesis were also induced under short-day conditions. Under short-day conditions, reproductive maturation was suppressed at 25 degrees C as compared with 15 and 20 degrees C, whereas under long-day conditions, lower temperatures induced reproductive maturation. In contrast, slugs reared under short-day conditions at 20 degrees C from the time of hatching gained more weight than those reared under long-day conditions at the same temperature. Moreover, short-day conditions induced reproductive maturation, similar to that observed in the field-collected slugs. In conclusion, short-day and low-temperature conditions promoted growth and reproductive maturation, whereas long-day and high-temperature conditions suppressed them in L. valentiana. Thus, L. valentiana reproduces from late autumn to spring in Osaka.  相似文献

Abstract. Effects of temperature and photoperiod on the induction and re-induction of adult diapause were examined in Dybowskyia reticulata (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae). Adults collected from the field after overwintering in early summer continued oviposition under long-day conditions of LD 16:8 h at 20 or 25°C, while they re-entered diapause under short-day conditions of LD 12:12 h at 25, 27.5 or 30°C. By contrast, adults reared in the laboratory from eggs at 20 or 25°C entered diapause under both long-day and short-day conditions, whereas those reared at 27.5 and 30°C entered diapause only under short-day conditions. Under quasi-natural conditions in 1993, when summer temperature was low, most adults of the first generation entered diapause in late July. However, in the warmer summer of 1996, oviposition was recorded in many females that ecdysed into adults from July to early August. Even though the seeds of the host plants occur in a restricted period from early summer to early autumn, in warmer years D. reticulata may produce a second generation. The response to temperature with a threshold between 25 and 27.5°C in D. reticulata brings about a switch between the univoltine and bivoltine life cycles.  相似文献

In the laboratory, blood feeding rates, oögenesis and fat body development were utilized to assess the effects of photoperiod and temperature in the conditioning of adult female Culiseta inornata for aestivation. Long-day (16L:8D) and short-day (8L:16D) photoperiods were examined in combination with temperatures of 15°C, 20°C, and 25°C. All tested individuals were reared from egg to adult under one of six possible regimes.Blood feeding occurred in approximately 60% of the females subjected to short-day conditions. Females subjected to long-day regimes exhibited gonotrophic concordance (the inhibition of blood feeding), evidenced by a decrease in overall blood-feeding rate to 20%. Inhibition of blood feeding by long-day females decreased in a linear fashion with increasing temperature. No interaction of the effects of photoperiod and temperature upon blood feeding was apparent. Examination of the ovarioles of post-blood feeding females, reared under each of the above conditions, revealed no evidence of gonotrophic dissociation (the inhibition of oögenesis despite continued blood feeding).Fat body hypertrophy occurred in females reared under long-day conditions, whereas hypotrophy of this tissue was apparent in short-day females. No significant difference in fat body development occurred between parous and nulliparous females reared under long-day photoperiod conditions. Short-day blood-fed females reared at 15°C deposited a significantly greater amount of fat than short-day blood fed females reared at 20° and 25°C, and short-day nonbloodfed females reared at 15°, 20°, and 25°C. The primary stimulus for fat body hypertrophy appears to be long-day photoperiod conditions. Temperature exerted little discernible effect upon this process, and there was no interaction between the effects of photoperiod and temperature upon the degree of fat body development.  相似文献

Interaction of the photoperiodic conditions of development of maternal females (day lengths of 2 to 22 h at 20°C) with the thermal regime of development of their progeny (temperature of 12 to 15°C at day length of 12 h) in determination of prepupal diapause in Trichogramma piceum was studied under laboratory conditions. At 15°C the diapause was practically absent. At lower temperatures, the proportion of diapausing prepupae was maximal (25% of larvae at 14°C, 70% of larvae at 13°, and 80% of larvae at 12°C) if the maternal females developed under short day conditions (10–12 h). When maternal females developed at day lengths of 18–20 h, diapause was rarely recorded at all temperatures, while ultra-short (less than 8–10 h) days also caused a decrease in the proportion of diapausing progeny. The right (ecologically important) threshold of this maternal long-day photoperiodic response was about 14–15 h independently of the temperature during the progeny development. These results make it possible to clarify the mechanism of the “maternal photoperiodic correction of the progeny thermal response.” Although the impact of the maternal photoperiodic response can be revealed only within a very narrow thermal range, the relative strength of the diapause-inducing effect of different day lengths is independent of the temperature regimen of the progeny development.  相似文献

Abstract  Photoperiodic sensitivity for diapause induction of the green lacewing, Chrysoperla sinica (Tjeder) was examined at 22°C. The adult diapause of C. sinica was induced by short-day photoperiods, and the critical photoperiod for its induction was between 12.5L-11.5D and 13L-11D.
Adults developed without diapause under long-day conditions, and entered diapause under short-day conditions. The adult stage was the uppermost sensitive stage for adult diapause induction, adults could go into diapause only when the emerging adults were under diapause-inducing short-day photoperiods. The short-day photoperiodic experience by transferring between 15L: 9D and 9L: 15D at preimaginal stages did not result in adult diapause under 15L: 9D photo regime, although some treatments extended the pre-oviposition period in adult stage. The results showed that the 3rd instar larvae and pre-pupae were more sensitive to the photoperiodic change from 15L: 9D to 9L: 15D photo regime than the other preimaginal stages.  相似文献

Female adults of the rice leaf bug Trigonotylus caelestialium (Kirkaldy) (Heteroptera: Miridae) produce non-diapause eggs under long-day conditions, whereas they produce diapause eggs under short-day conditions. These egg-production modes change following a photoperiodic change from long-day to short-day conditions or vice versa, with individual variations in responsiveness shown in the time from the photoperiodic change to the mode change. Strains of this insect with higher or lower responsiveness to photoperiodic change were established after several generations of selection, indicating that the individual variation has a genetic basis. The selected strains that were more responsive and less responsive to one photoperiodic change were found to be less responsive and more responsive to the opposite photoperiodic change, respectively, indicating a significant negative correlation between responsiveness to reciprocal photoperiodic changes. The selected strains also had a significantly different incidence of diapause-egg producers in stationary photoperiods compared to a non-selected strain, showing that selections for responsiveness to photoperiodic change were essentially the same as selections for a higher or lower incidence of diapause-egg producers. These results indicate that responsiveness to photoperiodic change is one aspect of the tendency to produce diapause or non-diapause eggs.  相似文献

Amara communis larvae were found to develop significantly faster and to have higher growth rate at short-day (12 h) as compared to long-day (22 h) photoperiods at all used temperatures (16, 18, 20, and 22°C). The coefficient of linear regression of larval development rate on temperature was significantly higher at the short day than at the long day. The thermal developmental thresholds appeared similar at both photoperiods. Body weight of young beetles reared under different photoperiods was almost the same. Thus, photoperiod does not simply accelerate or decelerate insect development, but modifies the thermal reaction norm. At short days, larval development becomes faster and more temperature-dependent, which provides a timely completion of development at the end of summer. The analysis of literature data has allowed us to find the photoperiodic modification of thermal requirements for development in 5 insect orders: Orthoptera, Heteroptera, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, and Diptera. Modification may result in significant changes in the slope of the regression line, and hence the sum of degree-days, and in the thermal developmental threshold. Consequently, the thermal requirements for development in many insects gradually vary during summer under the effect of changing day-length, which may have adaptive significance. Thus, the photoperiodic modification of thermal reaction norms acts as a specific form of seasonal control of insect development.  相似文献

Abstract In order to elucidate the mechanism regulating its seasonal life cycle, the photoperiodic response of Achaearanea tepidariorum has been analysed. Nymphal development was faster in long-day and slower in short-day photoperiods. The combined action of low temperature, poor food supply and short daylength induced diapause at an earlier developmental stage than short days alone. Thus, photoperiod is a primary factor inducing nymphal diapause, but the diapausing instar is influenced by both temperature and food supply. Hibernating nymphs became unresponsive to photoperiod in late December. After hibernation, however, sensitivity was restored and the nymphs remained sensitive to photoperiod throughout their life. This spider could also enter an imaginal or reproductive diapause. Photoperiod was again a primary inducing factor and temperature modified the photoperiodic response to some extent. The induction of the reproductive diapause was almost temperature-compensated whereas development was not. So the involvement of a photoperiodic counter system was suggested. Irrespective of whether the nymph had experienced diapause or not, the imaginal diapause was induced in response to a short-day photoperiod after adult moult. Based on these observations, the seasonal life cycle and the adaptive significance of nymphal and imaginal diapause are discussed.  相似文献

The suboesophageal ganglion of the silkworm, Bombyx mori synthesizes sufficient diapause hormone to produce diapause eggs, regardless of the photoperiodic conditions experienced during the larval stages. When larvae destined to produce non-diapause eggs are implanted with the brain-suboesophageal ganglion complex from larvae which have been reared under short-day conditions, the resulting adults lay diapause eggs. The larvae receiving the complex from larvae reared under long-day conditions gave rise to adults which did not produce any diapause eggs. The brains from pupae which have been reared under long-day conditions show an activity inhibiting the secretion of diapause hormone by the suboesophageal ganglion. The mechanism through which the brain controls the secretion of diapause hormone from the suboesophageal ganglion can be modified by photoperiodic conditions during the larval stages.  相似文献

This is the first report on the effects of temperature (from 17 to 30°C), photoperiod (from 10 to 16 h of light), and diet (the wheat aphid Schizaphis graminum and the green peach aphid Myzus persicae) on preimaginal developmental rates, adult body mass, preoviposition period, and female fecundity of the predatory lady beetle Harmonia quadripunctata (Pontoppidan) under the laboratory conditions. A constant temperature of 30°C was lethal to the embryos. Judging from the data obtained at 17, 20, and 25°C, the lower temperature threshold for total egg-to-adult development equaled 12.0°C and the respective sum of effective temperatures was 274 degree-days. Preimaginal development was somewhat faster under short-day conditions, the threshold for this quantitative photoperiodic response being approximately 14 h at the rearing temperatures of 20 and 25°C. At a temperature of 25°C, the mean body mass of newly emerged adults was greater for those individuals that during the larval stage had been fed on the green peach aphid (16.4 mg in males and 18.4 mg in females) than in those fed with the wheat aphid (13.8 mg in males and 15.3 mg in females). The preoviposition period (measured from adult emergence to the first egg laid) also depended on temperature and had a lower threshold of 13.4°C and a sum of effective temperatures of 152 degree-days. Maximum fecundity was observed at 25°C and 16-h day length; under these conditions, the oviposition period lasted over 100 d, and the average lifetime fecundity was about 800 eggs per female. Under short-day conditions, females of H. quadripunctata entered reproductive diapause. The photoperiodic threshold for this qualitative response at the temperatures of 20 and 25°C was about 14 h when fed on the peach aphid and 15 h when fed on the wheat aphid. Relatively small body size, low fecundity, and a strong photoperiodic response that hinders rapid adaptation to novel climates probably explain the fact that H. quadripunctata, in contrast to H. axyridis, has not become an aggressive invader.  相似文献

The seasonal cycle of Picromerus bidens L. (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) is usually considered to be univoltine with an obligatory winter egg diapause. Seasonal adaptations of the species were studied in the laboratory and in field experiments. When reared under short-day photoperiodic conditions (L12:D12 and L14:D10), all females began to lay eggs synchronously soon after their emergence. However, in the females reared under long-day conditions (L18:D6 and L20:D4) and outdoors in June–July, oviposition was significantly delayed. This delay in reproduction induced by photoperiodic conditions and then spontaneously terminated was considered to be aestivation. Egg batches laid by females in the laboratory and in the field were kept at 25 °C for two months. From 30.8 to 93.8% of batches contained eggs which hatched without cold treatment between day 14 and 60 after oviposition. The proportion of eggs hatched was 17.7 to 20.9% in the short-day regimes, while it was significantly less (5.7 to 6.0%) under long-day conditions. It is concluded that in some eggs diapause is of low intensity and that if under natural conditions the first batches had been laid at the end of June, nymphs would have hatched at least from some eggs during the same season even without cold treatment. Such untimely hatching would have resulted in the death of nymphs and adults unprepared for overwintering. A photoperiodic response which induces aestivation in the early emerging adults in June–August may prevent early oviposition and occurrence of a second generation and thus maintains univoltinism in P. bidens.  相似文献

Extrinsic control of developmental diapause in nymphs of prostriate ticks of the subgenus Ixodes sensu stricto (Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus from Eurasia and Ixodes scapularis from North America) appears to be based on a complex two-step photoperiodic reaction of a short-day/long-day type. Diapause control in the subgenus Afrixodes (the South African tick Ixodes rubicundus) appears to be based on a simple long-day reaction. The option between non-diapause development and diapausing arrest in engorged nymphs is determined by both pre- and post-feeding photoperiodic regimes. Consequently diapausing arrest in engorged nymphs of Ixodes sensu stricto can be induced either by a short-day (after their engorgement) or by a long-day regime (in unfed nymphs), while active, non-diapause development is possible only when the short-day pre-feeding regime is followed by a long-day post-feeding regime. The photoperiodic response in I. (Afrixodes) rubicundus nymphs seems to be of the long-day type both before and after feeding. Consequently this non-diapause development is enabled by a long-day regime, while diapause is induced by a short-day regime of exposure. Nevertheless, there are some indications that the control of nymphal diapause in the latter species is also of a complex nature. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Two isolates of Nemalion helminthoides from the west coast of Ireland showed a heteromorphic life history in which tetraspores formed under short-day conditions on uniaxial, prostrate tetrasporophytes gave rise to uniaxial, prostrate growths similar in morphology to the tetrasporophytes. The induction of multiaxial, erect axes on tetraspore-derived plants was a long-day photoperiodic response. At 11°C, 16:8 h LD, nitrate concentration in the enriched seawater medium had little effect on the numbers of erect exes formed. Induction of erect axes occurred only in daylengths ≥ 12 h, mainly between 7–13° C, and the critical daylength, which generally lies between 14 and 16 h, changed with temperature. Night-breaks (NB) of 1 h light in the middle of 16 h night were ineffective in the promotion of erect axis formation, and day-breaks (DB) of 1 h darkness in the middle of a 16 h day did not inhibit axis formation. Neither continuous light nor NB of 1–1.5 h given at various times during the dark period of an 8:16 h LD cycle promoted the formation of erect axes. At 9° C, equivalent photon exposures (0.69 and 0.34 mol·m?2) at two different instantaneous photon flux densities resulted in erect axis formation only in the 14 h, 16 h and DB regimes. Photoregimes of 16 h light in combination with dark cycles of various lengths resulted in the maximal promotion of the formation of erect axes in diurnal (22–24 h) and bi-diurnal (44–48 h) cycles, a diminishing response in non-diurnal cycles greater than 24 and 48 h, and a minimal response at 32 h. These data show that the formation of erect axes is a long-day photoperiodic response and provide further evidence for a connection between endogenous circadian rhythms and long-day photoperiodic responses.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism in body mass was studied in prepupae, pupae and immature adults of the green dock leaf beetle Gastrophysa viridula under a constant temperature of 24°C and two photoperiods (12L:12D and 22L:2D). Females were significantly heavier compared to males at all the three developmental stages; just after emergence from pupae they weighed, on average, 11.4 mg, while males—10.3 mg. Sex differences in photoperiodic body mass plasticity were revealed: under short-day conditions pupal and adult mass in females was significantly higher compared to long day, but not in males. Such a response to short day (the factor inducing reproductive diapause in this species) is likely to promote accumulation of greater amount of nutrients by females which is necessary for earlier oviposition after overwintering.  相似文献
