Biological invasions are a global issue with far‐reaching consequences for single species, communities and whole ecosystems. Our understanding of modes and mechanisms of biological invasions requires knowledge of the genetic processes associated with successful invasions. In many instances, this information is particularly difficult to obtain as the initial phases of the invasion process often pass unnoticed and we rely on inferences from contemporary population genetic data. Here, we combined historic information with the genetic analysis of resting eggs to reconstruct the invasion of Daphnia pulicaria into Lower Lake Constance (LLC) in the 1970s from the resting egg bank in the sediments. We identified the invader as ‘European D. pulicaria’ originating from meso‐ and eutrophic lowland lakes and ponds in Central Europe. The founding population was characterized by extremely low genetic variation in the resting egg bank that increased considerably over time. Furthermore, strong evidence for selfing and/or biparental inbreeding was found during the initial phase of the invasion, followed by a drop of selfing rate to low levels in subsequent decades. Moreover, the increase in genetic variation was most pronounced during early stages of the invasion, suggesting additional introductions during this period. Our study highlights that genetic data covering the entire invasion process from its beginning can be crucial to accurately reconstruct the invasion history of a species. We show that propagule banks can preserve such information enabling the study of population genetic dynamics and sources of genetic variation in successful invasive populations.  相似文献

Life history divergence between populations inhabiting ecologically distinct habitats might be a potent source of reproductive isolation, but has received little attention in the context of speciation. We here test for life history divergence between threespine stickleback inhabiting Lake Constance (Central Europe) and multiple tributary streams. Otolith analysis shows that lake fish generally reproduce at two years of age, while their conspecifics in all streams have shifted to a primarily annual life cycle. This divergence is paralleled by a striking and consistent reduction in body size and fecundity in stream fish relative to lake fish. Stomach content analysis suggests that life history divergence might reflect a genetic or plastic response to pelagic versus benthic foraging modes in the lake and the streams. Microsatellite and mitochondrial markers further reveal that life history shifts in the different streams have occurred independently following the colonization by Lake Constance stickleback, and indicate the presence of strong barriers to gene flow across at least some of the lake-stream habitat transitions. Given that body size is known to strongly influence stickleback mating behavior, these barriers might well be related to life history divergence.  相似文献

The introduction of invasive species that can replace native species is one of the most critical threats to the biodiversity of aquatic systems. Here we investigated the potential contribution of one factor to the coexistence of the indigenous amphipod Gammarus roeselii and the invasive amphipod Dikerogammarus villosus in the same ecosystem (Lake Constance) within different microhabitats. We quantitatively studied the influence of ambient ammonia concentrations on the distributions of the two amphipod species. We also assessed the ammonia tolerance ranges of both species in laboratory experiments by measuring mortality rate, precopula disruption, egg mortality, and microhabitat choice. The proportion of G. roeselii among the two amphipod species was significantly positively related to the ammonia concentration in the water, which indicated that the distribution of the invasive D. villosus was limited at high ammonia concentrations. Although the mortality rates of the two species did not significantly differ, G. roeselii was more tolerant to ammonia with regard to precopula disruption, egg mortality, and microhabitat choice. The effective ammonia concentrations that led to a significantly reduced direct reproductive success in D. villosus were within the range of the highest field concentrations measured, where only G. roeselii occurred. D. villosus may have a smaller range than the indigenous G. roeselii partially because of its lower tolerance to higher ammonia concentrations, which lead to reduced reproductive success. Beside other habitat parameters differences on ammonia tolerance between the two amphipods might allow their coexistence along a gradient of microhabitats in Lake Constance.  相似文献

The unusual yellow‐finned morph of European perch Perca fluviatilis found in Lake Constance suffers more severely from macroparasite infections, including the tapeworm Triaenophorus nodulosus and the gill worm Ancyrocephalus percae, than conspecifics elsewhere. Microsatellite analysis of yellow‐finned P. fluviatilis and red‐finned variant recently discovered in Lake Constance revealed significant genetic differentiation. Red‐finned P. fluviatilis and fish with mixed fin colour, suggested backcrosses between red and yellow‐finned colour morphs, exhibit better resilience to parasite infection, suggesting that the inability of the yellow‐finned morph to reject macroparasites may have a genetic basis.  相似文献

Invasive species often influence existing biocenoses by altering their environment or facilitating the ecology of other species. Here we combined stable isotope analysis with quantitative benthic community sampling to investigate temporal variation in the influence of biodeposition of organic material (biodeposits) by the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) on the benthic food web in hard substrate habitats of Lake Constance, Germany. The accumulation of organic material excreted by zebra mussels (faeces and pseudofaeces) is hypothesised to implement a biodeposition based food web. By means of stable isotope analyses, we found that the feeding strategy of amphipods was dependent on the availability of zebra mussel biodeposits. The proportion of pelagic resources contributing to the diet (by ??13C) and trophic position (by ??15N) of amphipods were significantly and positively correlated to the production of zebra mussel biodeposits. Also, the benthic community in Lower Lake Constance showed a shift towards higher densities of the mayfly Caenis spp., Chironominae, and the caddisfly Ecnomus tenellus, which might act as links to higher trophic levels when more zebra mussel biodeposits were available. These results demonstrate that temporal variation in zebra mussel density, and thus in organic biodeposition, have a strong impact on the benthic communities and food web structure associated with hard substrates to the extent that there may be dependence on zebra mussel occurrence in such habitats in Lake Constance.  相似文献

The existence of egg banks not only ensures the survival of zooplankton through harsh periods, but could also affect microevolutionary dynamics. Whether zooplankton at high latitudes can build up an egg bank in sediments, as occurs at lower latitudes, is still unknown. The distribution and age of viable resting eggs of the calanoid copepod Boeckella poppei Mrázek in sediments of two small freshwater lakes on King George Island were determined by slicing sediment cores at 1-cm intervals. Most viable resting eggs were found near the sediment surface, with abundance sharply declining to very low values at the depth of 5?cm, although eggs were present as deep as 9?cm in the sediments of Yanouhu Lake. The egg abundances in Xihu Lake and Yanouhu Lake were estimated to be 9.2?×?104 and 7.2?×?104?eggs?m?2, respectively. 210Pb dating indicated a relatively constant sedimentation rate (0.023?cm?year?1) in Xihu Lake, which was used to estimate the mean age (46.8?year), the maximum age (195.7?year), and the mortality rate (1.64?% year?1) of resting eggs of B. poppei in Xihu Lake. The accumulation of resting eggs with long-term viability in sediments provided the first evidence for the existence of egg banks in two Antarctic maritime lakes. An egg bank may serve as an overwintering strategy for B. poppei in Antarctica, enhance their ability to cope with random extreme changes, and contribute to their broad distribution.  相似文献

Chondrostoma nasus is a cyprinid fish with highly specialized, ecologically and geographically distinct, ontogenetic trophic niches. Nase population numbers across their Swiss range have shown massive declines and many localized extinctions. In this study, we integrate genetic data (AFLP, microsatellite, mtDNA sequence) with phenotypic and demographic analyses to survey patterns of neutral and adaptive genetic diversity in all extant (and one extinct) Swiss nase populations, with the aim to delineate intraspecific conservation units (CUs) and to inform future population management strategies. We discovered two major genetically and geographically distinct population groupings. The first population grouping comprises nase inhabiting rivers flowing into Lake Constance; the second comprises nase populations from Rhine drainages below Lake Constance. Within these clusters there is generally limited genetic differentiation among populations. Genomic outlier scans based on 256 to 377 polymorphic AFLP loci revealed little evidence of local adaptation both within and among population clusters, with the exception of one candidate locus identified in scans involving the low genetic diversity Schanzengraben population. However, significant phenotypic differentiation in body shape between certain populations suggests a need for more intensive future studies of local adaptation. Our data strongly suggests that the two major population groups should be treated as distinct CUs, with any supplemental stocking and reintroductions sourced only from within the range of the CU concerned.  相似文献

Diapausing embryos of Malacosoma americanum, the eastern tent caterpillar, collected in Kentucky were infected by a microsporidan. Of the egg masses sampled from several central Kentucky counties during 1972–1973, 56–90% of the egg masses contained infected embryos. Studies on the life cycle demonstrated that this microsporidan belongs in the genus Nosema. The M. americanum egg masses, embryos, larvae, and adults were paraffin-sectioned to reveal host-pathogen relationships. Frozen sections were also prepared from certain eggs dissected from infected virgin females. These studies demonstrated that the Nosema sp. is transovarially transmitted. Two phases in the infection process were noted in the pre- and postdiapausing embryos. The first phase (prediapause) involved light infections in midgut, hypodermis, and fat body which were manifest at embryonic tissue differentiation. The second phase (postdiapause) of the infection process occurred after the termination of host diapause. General infections intensified within larvae after hatch. Variation in the intensity of infections among individuals from the same colony suggests that sublethally infected individuals assure the prepetuation of Nosema sp. infections in subsequent generations via transovarial transmission.  相似文献

In the pre-alpine region of Europe numbers and sizes of populations of the clonal lake shore plant Ranunculus reptans have declined because of the regulation of lake water levels. We investigated genetic variation among and within 17 populations of different size (cover 1–10 000 m2) in R. reptans with RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA) profiles. We sampled 127 rosettes in 14 populations at Lake Constance and three populations at or near Lake Como. There was significant genetic variation between plants from the two lake regions (5.9%, analysis of molecular variance [AMOVA], P < 0.001), among populations within lake regions (20.4%, P < 0.001), and within populations (73.7%, P < 0.001). Under the assumptions of Wright's island model the variation among populations corresponds to a gene flow of Nem = 0.70. Within the 14 Lake Constance populations we detected significant genetic variation among subpopulations separated by only a few metres (4.0% of the within-population variation; P < 0.05). Molecular variance was 24% smaller in small populations covering <100 m2 area than in larger ones (P < 0.03), indicating that samples from large populations were genetically more variable than samples representing comparable areas of smaller populations. We conclude that gene flow among populations is very limited and that genetic drift has caused reduced genetic variability of smaller populations. Conservation of genetic variability in R. reptans requires persistence of large and also of small populations (because of population differentiation), and it could be enhanced by increasing the size of small populations (to counter genetic drift).  相似文献

The seasonal variability of the temperature dependence of embryonic development in Daphnia galeata, D. hyalina and Eudiaptomus gracilis of Lake Constance was investigated. We found a significant correlation between the adult size and the variability of the temperature function in all three species, and only in case of D. hyalina a significant influence of egg weight on the temperature function. We could demonstrate no general trend in the influence of the thermal adaptation of parent animals on the temperature function, but some specifically different responses among the investigated species.  相似文献

1. We investigated whether Daphnia galeata × hyalina hybrids of Lake Constance and Lake Greifensee show the same pattern of life history parameters as previously reported for D. galeata × cucullata hybrids and whether such a pattern is consistent between Daphnia populations from those two lakes. 2. Hybrids in Lake Constance were intermediate in size compared with the parental species. Hybrids in Lake Greifensee were smaller than D. galeata. The intrinsic growth rate (r) of hybrids from Lake Constance was not significantly different from the faster growing parental taxon D. galeata. However, r of hybrids from Lake Greifensee was significantly lower than that of D. galeata. 3. The observed juvenile body length differences between the taxa varied with the clutch number. The first clutch juvenile lengths of the three taxa did not differ for Lake Constance. First clutch juveniles of Lake Greifensee D. galeata were smaller than hybrid first clutch juveniles. The third clutch juvenile length did not differ between taxa from Lake Greifensee, but D. galeata juveniles from Lake Constance were bigger than those of D. hyalina. 4. The life history pattern found in Lake Constance corresponds to previous findings from other studies. The hybrids in this lake combine the faster population growth of one parental species with a relatively small size. In the case of Lake Greifensee hybrids, the relatively large size of first clutch juveniles and the small size of the adults could be interpreted as dual adaptations to invertebrate and fish predation. We speculate that the lower population growth rate of the hybrids is a trade‐off for this twofold protection.  相似文献

Bacterial communities associated with sheaths of Thioploca spp. from two freshwater lakes (Lake Biwa, Japan, and Lake Constance, Germany) and one brackish lake (Lake Ogawara, Japan) were analyzed with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of 16S rRNA gene fragments. The comparison between the DGGE band patterns of bulk sediment and Thioploca filaments of Lake Biwa suggested the presence of specific bacterial communities associated with Thioploca sheaths. As members of sheath-associated communities, bacteria belonging to Bacteroidetes were detected from the samples of both freshwater lakes. A DGGE band from Thioploca of Lake Biwa, belonging to candidate division OP8, was quite closely related to another DGGE band detected from that of Lake Constance. In contrast to the case of freshwater lakes, no bacterium of Bacteroidetes or OP8 was detected from Thioploca of Lake Ogawara. However, two DGGE bands from Lake Ogawara, belonging to Chloroflexi, were quite closely related to a DGGE band from Lake Constance. Two DGGE bands obtained from Lake Biwa were closely related to phylogenetically distant dissimilatory Fe(III)-reducing bacteria. Cloning analyses for a dissimilatory sulfite reductase gene were performed on the same samples used for DGGE analysis. The results of the analyses suggest that sheaths of freshwater/brackish Thioploca have little ecological significance for the majority of sulfate reducers.  相似文献

Dormant stages (“resting eggs”) produced by cladocerans can persist for long periods of time in sediments and restore populations once the environmental conditions become favorable again. Lake Blanca, a subtropical shallow eutrophic lake, hosts a cladoceran community dominated by small-sized species. Previous studies on zooplankton resting eggs suggested that the cladoceran genera Daphnia and Simocephalus were present, but they had never been found before in water samples. In the present study, we compared a biweekly active community sampling with the resting egg bank (passive cladoceran community) from littoral and pelagic zones. Moreover, we tested the amount of samples required to have a representative reconstruction of the diversity in both compartments (water and sediment). Lake Blanca showed a relatively high cladoceran species richness (24) in the water column, with rapid temporal replacement. Several species were present in water samples during short temporal windows; therefore, to detect these species a strong sampling effort in terms of temporal frequency and spatial distribution was required. Contrary to our expectations, resting egg community showed a lower diversity than the active community; however, we demonstrated that the analysis of resting egg bank composition can help detect general community structure patterns.  相似文献

The burbot, Lota lota, is the only freshwater species of the codfish family and has a Holarctic distribution. Pleistocene glaciations caused significant geographical differentiation in the past, but its life history characterized by winter spawning migrations over large distances is likely to homogenize populations by contemporary gene flow. We investigated the population genetic structure of 541 burbots from Lake Constance and adjacent Rhine and Danube tributaries in Europe using the entire mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region and 11 microsatellites. Microsatellites revealed considerable population divergence (F(ST) = 0.26) and evidenced recent bottlenecks in two Central European rivers. In accordance to previous evidence two main phylogeographic lineages (Atlantic and Danubian) were found co-occurring at similar frequencies in Lake Constance, where they currently undergo random mating as indicated by microsatellites. The Danubian lineage contributed only a small proportion to the lake's mtDNA diversity, and probably expanded within the lake shortly after its formation approximately 10,000-15,000 BP. The larger Atlantic haplotype diversity suggested a population expansion older than the lake itself. Levels of admixture at microsatellite loci were less obvious due to their high variability, and coalescence methods were used to estimate past admixture proportions. Our results reinforce a model of a two-step colonization of Europe by burbot from an ancestral Danubian refuge, and confirm the persistence of a secondary Atlantic refuge, as proposed to exist for other freshwater fish. We conclude that the present-day burbot population in Lake Constance bears the genetic signature of both contemporary gene flow and historical separation events.  相似文献

Filamentous, gliding, sulfide-oxidizing bacteria of the genus Thioploca were found on sediments in profundal areas of Lake Biwa, a Japanese freshwater mesotrophic lake, and were characterized morphologically and phylogenetically. The Lake Biwa Thioploca resembled morphologically Thioploca ingrica, a brackish water species from a Danish fjord. The diameters of individual trichomes were 3 to 5.6 μm; the diameters of complete Thioploca filaments ranged from 18 to 75 μm. The cell lengths ranged from 1.2 to 3.8 μm. In transmission electron microscope specimens stained with uranyl acetate, dense intracellular particles were found, which did not show any positive signals for phosphorus and sulfur in an X-ray analysis. The 16S rRNA gene of the Thioploca from Lake Biwa was amplified by using newly designed Thioploca-specific primers (706-Thioploca, Biwa160F, and Biwa829R) in combination with general bacterial primers in order to avoid nonspecific amplification of contaminating bacterial DNA. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis of the three overlapping PCR products resulted in single DGGE bands, indicating that a single 16S rRNA gene had been amplified. With the same method, the Thioploca from Lake Constance was examined. The 16S rRNA sequence was verified by performing fluorescence in situ hybridization targeted at specific motifs of the Lake Biwa Thioploca. Positive signals were obtained with the bacterial probe EUB-338, the γ-proteobacterial probe GAM42a, and probe Biwa829 targeting the Lake Biwa Thioploca. Based on the nearly complete 16S rRNA sequence and on morphological similarities, the Thioploca from Lake Biwa and the Thioploca from Lake Constance are closely related to T. ingrica and to each other.  相似文献

The replacement of native species by invasive species is one of the most critical threats to the biodiversity of aquatic systems today. However, little is known about potential effects of species invasions on the genetic diversity of indigenous species in cases where the latter coexist with the invader. Here we present an example of the indigenous amphipod Gammarus roeselii, which has been partly replaced by the invasive Dikerogammarus villosus in Lake Constance (C-Europe) and now mostly exists in small, isolated populations. We compared the genetic diversity, population structure, indicators for bottlenecks and migrations rates of G. roeselii before and after the invasion event from samples collected between 1999 and 2013. We expected a genetic impoverishment in the reduced and segregated populations of G. roeselii. However, no genetic measure on G. roeselii differed temporally or spatially over the investigated period, which indicates that D. villosus has not yet had an impact on G. roeselii at the genetic scale. Hence, even though a decline in population size of G. roeselii was found in Lake Constance, our results on the genetic scale contribute to recent findings that the overall impact of D. villosus on native species is not as strong as often discussed.

Rotifers are cyclical parthenogens that produce sexual diapausing eggs at some stage in their life cycle. These eggs are encysted embryos that remain viable for extended periods in lake and pond sediments, thus acting as an egg bank with many ecological and evolutionary consequences. Despite its importance to rotifer evolution, there are no studies on resting egg deterioration and associated processes in natural environments. In this study, more than 4000 diapausing eggs of species from the Brachionus plicatilis complex, which includes several closely related cryptic species, were collected from different sediment depths in 15 ponds in eastern Spain and were classified according to three features thought to be related to their viability: shell integrity, embryo size, and embryo colour. A positive association was found between embryo size and hatching success in those eggs having an intact shell. Diapausing eggs that showed good shell integrity and no more than a 25% reduction of multinuclear embryo maximum size were classified as healthy and 98.9% hatched. Darkening of diapausing egg embryo was an indicator of viability loss. A decreasing frequency of healthy-looking diapausing eggs was observed with increasing sediment depth, although some exceptions were found.  相似文献

We present an ostracod record covering the past two millennia from an 8.25-m core taken from Lake Qarun, in the Faiyum Depression of Egypt. The occurrence of ostracod species in the lake is controlled primarily by variations in solute composition, which are in turn related to shifts in catchment land use. At times when the Faiyum Depression supported thriving agriculture, lake water contained Na+–Cl? brine, and Cyprideis torosa dominated the ostracod assemblage. When the Faiyum Depression experienced periods of environmental and economic decline, lake water contained Na+–HCO3 ? brine, and Limnocythere inopinata dominated. The relative abundance of other ostracod species provides additional information about past conditions in Lake Qarun including salinity and lake level changes. Overall, the ostracod assemblages provide evidence for human influences in the Faiyum, which extend back before instrumental or detailed observational records began.  相似文献

This article presents data on the genetic variability of the northern red-backed vole and the bank vole that live sympatrically in West Siberia. The two species of voles have comparable, relatively high indices of genetic variability of inter simple sequences repeats DNA. The proportion of polymorphic DNA markers is 95–98%, and the Nei’s genetic diversity index is 0.33–0.35. A total of 47–58% of allozyme loci in the voles are polymorphic, and the average heterozygosity per locus is 0.058 in the northern red-backed vole and 0.054 in the bank vole. Interpopulation differentiation is less pronounced in the red-backed vole (F ST 0.293) compared to the bank vole (F ST 0.475). Individuals of the hybrid line of the bank vole with the mitochondrial haplotype of the red-backed vole have been found by PCR typing of cytochrome b gene fragment of mtDNA. The distribution boundary of the hybrid line of bank voles goes farther to the northeast than was shown in earlier works. The proportion of hybrid specimens range from 2 to 34%. The indices of genetic variability in the hybrid line of the bank vole are lower than those of the parental species.  相似文献

The autotrophic picoplankton of the pelagic zone of the mesotrophic Lake Constance is dominated by phycoerythrin-rich unicellular cyanobacteria phylogenetically related to the marine Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus cluster. In Lake Constance, the abundance of picocyanobacteria shows a recurrent pattern of seasonal variations. Evidence of diverse subpopulations was obtained by electron-microscopic examination of natural water samples and isolated strains that unveiled different surface structures of picocyanobacteria. Further evidence was obtained by DNA analysis of 26 clonal isolates representing 12 different genotypes. Variations in light and nutrient supply revealed distinct abilities of the genetically different strains to cope with these stress situations. Furthermore, cultured heterotrophic nanoflagellates exhibited differential feeding preferences for certain Synechococcus strains. The findings imply that growth and loss rates of the natural cyanobacterial community may be influenced by its genetic composition. Phylogenetic analyses of isolated strains indicated that the physiological diversification of pelagic Synechococcus spp. has occurred during a recent adaptive radiation. An example for genetic mechanisms underlying physiological diversification is indicated by mobile DNA elements found in a Synechocystis strain also isolated from the pelagic zone of Lake Constance. The observations suggest that dominance of Synechococcus spp. was achieved by evolutionary adaptation and coexistence of numerous genotypes generating a physiologically highly diversified population.
