Previous studies that have looked at the aversive properties of simple, predator-related, eye-like patterns presented in an artificial context, have yielded conflicting results. The aim of the present series of experiments was to investigate whether such stimuli had potential for use as bird scarers. The starling (Sturnus vulgaris) was the subject species. The experimental procedure was designed to provide a relevant and objective, interval scale of aversiveness based upon the ability of eye patterns to deter hungry birds from a feeding area. Each subject was deprived of food for 5 h and then tested in an apparatus which exposed an eye pattern over a food trough immediately after the bird alighted on that trough. 10 measures of the starlings' feeding behaviour were monitored over a 1-h trial. It was predicted that five of these variables would be positively and five negatively correlated with an increase in the fear evoking properties of the stimulus. The 10 measures were analysed using principal component analysis and the first component in every experiment had the signs of the latent vectors of the variables exactly in the predicted pattern and therefore appeared to be an ‘aversiveness index’. The scores from this first component were then used in a Latin square ANOVA to distinguish subject, test order and stimulus effects. The main findings from the eight experiments are as follows. Simple eye-like patterns can indeed deter hungry starlings from feeding in their vicinity. The presence of a pair of eyes painted on a white card caused an 88% reduction in time spent on the nearby food trough and a 65% reduction in actual feeding time. The presence of ‘pupils’ in the patterns is essential for simple circles alone are not significantly more aversive than the control card. Once a pattern has the ‘pupil/iris’ distinction then a circular outline becomes important although the shape of the ‘pupil’ appears relatively unimportant. Eyes with coloured irises are more effective than black and white patterns but the degree of contrast between the ‘pupil’ and ‘iris’ appears irrelevant. Increasing the number of simultaneously presented eyes from one to three is correlated with an increasing trend in aversiveness which is destroyed if the same stimuli are presented within the context of a simple head outline. Changing the orientation of a pair of eyes from horizontal to vertical only slightly reduces their aversiveness. The size of the patterns appears to be unimportant within the range tested. The aversive properties of eyespots and of broadcast starling distress calls are positively additive. The effectiveness of a stimulus combining all the important features mentioned is as aversive as is a realistic model of the head of an owl.  相似文献

People are more cooperative when explicitly observed, and simply exposing people to images of eyes or faces has been shown to increase cooperation of various types and in various contexts, albeit with notable, if controversial, exceptions. This ‘eyes effect’ is important both for its potential real-world applications and for its implications regarding the role of reputation in the evolution and maintenance of human cooperation. Based on the general principle that organisms eventually cease responding to uninformative stimuli, we predicted that the eyes effect would be eliminated by prolonged exposure. A novel experiment confirmed that participants exposed briefly to an eye-like image gave more money in an economic game than those in a longer exposure condition and those in a control condition. There was no generosity difference between the long exposure and control conditions. Furthermore, a meta-analysis of 25 eyes effects experiments confirmed that the effect emerges reliably after short exposures to eye images, but not after long exposures. An understanding of the limits of false cues on behaviour helps resolve empirical discrepancies regarding the eyes effect and exonerates the importance of reputation even in anonymous, one-shot interactions.  相似文献

Many species of lepidoptera bear conspicuous circular patterns on their wings, known as eyespots, that are hypothesised to protect their bearers against predatory birds. In this study, we focus on a small but ubiquitous feature occurring naturally in lepidopteran eyespots, namely the so‐called ‘sparkle’. The ‘pupil’ in an eyespot is often highlighted by a ‘sparkle’, which is hypothesised to mimic a natural corneal total light reflection evident as a highlight, twinkle, or sparkle in the vertebrate eye. In a study exploring the presence of such sparkles, we found that 53% of lepidopteran eyespots exceeding 1 mm in diameter have a central, pinpoint‐like ‘sparkle’, 12% have a marginal, crescent‐shaped ‘sparkle’, 13% have a semi‐circular ‘sparkle’, and 22% have an intermediate semi‐circular to crescent‐shaped ‘sparkle’. In the lepidopterans’ natural resting position, the marginal ‘sparkles’ are positioned in the upper part of the eyespots’‘pupil’ and thus may create the illusion of a spherical eyeball. The ‘sparkles’ in lepidopteran eyespots do not only appear white to humans, but also reflect ultraviolet light. White and UV‐reflecting ‘sparkles’ also appear ‘white’ for UV‐sensitive viewers such as birds, and thus may effectively mimic the natural highlight in vertebrate eyes as an area of total light reflection. In field experiments using lepidopteran dummies baited with a mealworm, we show that the ‘sparkle’ is one of several components of eyespots eliciting a deterrent effect and that eyespots with a ‘sparkle’ in a natural position have a stronger deterrent effect than those with a ‘sparkle’ in an unnatural position. These findings support the eye mimicry hypothesis that better vertebrate eye mimicry improves the deterrent effect of eyespots.  相似文献

Birds display a rainbow of eye colours, but this trait has been little studied compared with plumage coloration. Avian eye colour variation occurs at all phylogenetic scales: it can be conserved throughout whole families or vary within one species, yet the evolutionary importance of this eye colour variation is under-studied. Here, we summarize knowledge of the causes of eye colour variation at three primary levels: mechanistic, genetic and evolutionary. Mechanistically, we show that avian iris pigments include melanin and carotenoids, which also play major roles in plumage colour, as well as purines and pteridines, which are often found as pigments in non-avian taxa. Genetically, we survey classical breeding studies and recent genomic work on domestic birds that have identified potential ‘eye colour genes’, including one associated with pteridine pigmentation in pigeons. Finally, from an evolutionary standpoint, we present and discuss several hypotheses explaining the adaptive significance of eye colour variation. Many of these hypotheses suggest that bird eye colour plays an important role in intraspecific signalling, particularly as an indicator of age or mate quality, although the importance of eye colour may differ between species and few evolutionary hypotheses have been directly tested. We suggest that future studies of avian eye colour should consider all three levels, including broad-scale iris pigment analyses across bird species, genome sequencing studies to identify loci associated with eye colour variation, and behavioural experiments and comparative phylogenetic analyses to test adaptive hypotheses. By examining these proximate and ultimate causes of eye colour variation in birds, we hope that our review will encourage future research to understand the ecological and evolutionary significance of this striking avian trait.  相似文献

In Wolffian lens regeneration, lentectomized newt eye can produce a new lens from the dorsal marginal iris, but the ventral iris has never shown such capabilities. To investigate the difference of lens regenerating potency between dorsal and ventral iris epithelium at the cellular level, a transplantation system using cell reaggregates was developed. Two methods were devised for preparing the reaggregates from pigmented iris epithelial cells. One was rotating cells in an agar-coated multiplate on a gyratory shaker and the other was incubating cells in a microcentrifuge tube after slight centrifugation. Reaggregates made of dorsal iris cells that had been completely dissociated into single cells were phenotypically transformed into a lens when placed in the pupillary region of the lentectomized host eye. None of the ventral reaggregates produced a lens. Even dorsal reaggregates could not transdifferentiate into lens when they were placed away from the pupil. The produced lenses from the reaggregates were morphologically and immunohistochemically identified. To obtain evidence whether produced lenses really originated from singly dissociated cells, we labeled dissociated cells with a fluorescent dye (PKH26) before reaggregate formation and then traced it in the produced lens.  相似文献

Sixteen experimentally naive adult Barbary doves (S. risoria) learned a successive discrimination between a simple and a complex shape and were then tested for transfer of training in a generalization test with seven unfamiliar shapes. It was found that the degree of equivalence between shapes was correlated with two physical measures of shape based on contour length and on the number of sides of the shape. These results are in general agreement with other comparative data including those for humans. Results of the generalization test showed an ‘asymmetrical’ response in that judgments of shape similarity were not elicited with equal frequency in all subjects. This was interpreted as evidence for an internal standard in that subjects compared test stimuli to the positive training shape.  相似文献

In video sequence-based iris recognition system, the problem of making full use of relationship and correlation among frames still remains to be solved. A brand new template level multimodal fusion algorithm inspired by human cognition manner is proposed. In that a non-isolated geometrical manifold, named Hyper Sausage Chain due to its sausage shape, is trained using the frames from a pattern class for representing an iris class in feature space. We can classify any input iris by observing which manifold it locates in. This process is closer to the function of human being, which takes 'matter cognition' instead of 'matter classification' as its basic principle. The experiments on self-developed JLUBR-IRIS dataset with several video sequences per person demonstrate the effectiveness and usability of the proposed algorithm for video sequence-based iris recognition. Fur- thermore, the comparative experiments on public CASIA-I and CASIA-V4-Interval datasets show that our method can also achieve improved performance of image-based iris recognition system, provided enough samples are involved in training stage.  相似文献

The iris of the eye shows striking color variation across vertebrate species, and may play important roles in crypsis and communication. The domestic pigeon (Columba livia) has three common iris colors, orange, pearl (white), and bull (dark brown), segregating in a single species, thereby providing a unique opportunity to identify the genetic basis of iris coloration. We used comparative genomics and genetic mapping in laboratory crosses to identify two candidate genes that control variation in iris color in domestic pigeons. We identified a nonsense mutation in the solute carrier SLC2A11B that is shared among all pigeons with pearl eye color, and a locus associated with bull eye color that includes EDNRB2, a gene involved in neural crest migration and pigment development. However, bull eye is likely controlled by a heterogeneous collection of alleles across pigeon breeds. We also found that the EDNRB2 region is associated with regionalized plumage depigmentation (piebalding). Our study identifies two candidate genes for eye colors variation, and establishes a genetic link between iris and plumage color, two traits that vary widely in the evolution of birds and other vertebrates.  相似文献

In this study, we present a new quantitative method to measure iris colour based on high‐resolution photographs. We applied this method to analyse iris colour variation in a sample of individuals of East Asian, European and South Asian ancestry. We show that measuring iris colour using the coordinates of the CIELAB colour space uncovers a significant amount of variation that is not captured using conventional categorical classifications, such as ‘brown’, ‘blue’ or ‘green’. We tested the association of a selected panel of polymorphisms with iris colour in each population group. Six markers showed significant associations with iris colour in the European sample, three in the South Asian sample and two in the East Asian sample. We also observed that the marker HERC2 rs12913832, which is the main determinant of ‘blue’ versus ‘brown’ iris colour in European populations, is also significantly associated with central heterochromia in the European sample.  相似文献

Most vertebrate groups exhibit eye shapes that vary predictably with activity pattern. Nocturnal vertebrates typically have large corneas relative to eye size as an adaptation for increased visual sensitivity. Conversely, diurnal vertebrates generally demonstrate smaller corneas relative to eye size as an adaptation for increased visual acuity. By contrast, several studies have concluded that many mammals exhibit typical nocturnal eye shapes, regardless of activity pattern. However, a recent study has argued that new statistical methods allow eye shape to accurately predict activity patterns of mammals, including cathemeral species (animals that are equally likely to be awake and active at any time of day or night). Here, we conduct a detailed analysis of eye shape and activity pattern in mammals, using a broad comparative sample of 266 species. We find that the eye shapes of cathemeral mammals completely overlap with nocturnal and diurnal species. Additionally, most diurnal and cathemeral mammals have eye shapes that are most similar to those of nocturnal birds and lizards. The only mammalian clade that diverges from this pattern is anthropoids, which have convergently evolved eye shapes similar to those of diurnal birds and lizards. Our results provide additional evidence for a nocturnal ‘bottleneck’ in the early evolution of crown mammals.  相似文献

Abstract. Lensectomized Xenopus laevis larvae are capable of regenerating a lens from the cells of the outer cornea. Unlike the outer cornea, the iris of larval Xenopus exhibits a high degree of phenotypic stability, even when it has been damaged to various degrees in order to stimulate its latent transdifferentiative competence. However, when isolated from its surrounding tissues and implanted in an appropriate site, the dorsal iris of larval Xenopus is capable of following a differentiative pathway different to that normally followed in situ. Our results show that, when such an implant is placed in the vitreous chamber of a lensectomized eye, the pigmented epithelial cells of the iris transdifferentiate into neural retina regardless of whether the iris stroma is present or not. Unlike the vitreous chamber, the environment of the anterior chamber of a lensectomized eye does not promote the transdifferentiative process of the iris. We suggest the existence of eye factors that promote retina-forming transformation of the iris and that are distributed in a gradient in lensectomized eyes.  相似文献

The Stiles-Crawford (S.-C.) function, a measure of the directional sensitivity of the retina, was used to infer the alignment characteristics of the sampled retinal elements. One assumes that the peak of the photopic S.-C. function reflects the central alignment tendency of renal elements sampled, and that the shape of the function reflects, among other factors, distributive qualities. Here two tests were performed to determine whether the function sampled reflected positive phototropic activity. The natural eye pupil was dilated and artificial pupils were substituted having specified eccentricity from the centre of the natural pupil. This was achieved with a displaced iris contact lens. After a series of complex experiments, it was finally shown that the peaks of the S.-C. function shifted towards the displaced aperture of the contact lens. As a second test, individuals were occluded uniocularly with a black patch for periods of time up to 10 days. This caused remarkable flattening of the measured S.-C. function. That flattening occurred in determinations of both photopic and scotopic S.-C. functions. Comparable effects were not seen in the second eye or if a diffuser was substituted for the black patch. Change and recovery in both experiments occurred within 3-5 days. On the basis of these experiments it is inferred that there is an active mechanism behaving in a positive phototropic manner present in the human retina.  相似文献

1. The responses of the pupil of a nocturnal gecko (Gekko gekko) to external light stimulus were studied. 2. The responses of the pupil are determined by light entering the pupil and not by light acting directly on the iris. 3. The responses of the pupil are very uniform in sensitivity including spectral sensitivity for light coming in different directions to the eye. 4. The possible change in area of the pupil is more than 300-fold and probably represents an effort to shield the pure rod retina from saturating light intensities. 5. The pupil continues to contract sharply for changes in external light intensity which give retinal illuminations corresponding to 106 quanta/sec. striking a retinal rod. 6. There is a large degree of spatial summation of the response; circular external light fields subtending 5 and 140° giving the same illumination at the pupil give approximately the same pupil response. 7. The spectral sensitivity curve agrees with the absorption curve of an extracted pigment from a closely related gecko described by Crescitelli in the followig paper. It is similar to the human scotopic curve but its maximum is displaced about 20 to 30 mµ towards the red end of the spectrum. The fall in sensitivity towards the red end of the spectrum is described by the equation See PDF for Equation  相似文献

Adult newts (Notophthalmus viridescens) were lentectomized and at intervals from 4 to 21 days after lentectomy iridocorneal complexes from these animals were examined by scanning electron microscopy to allow a full appreciation for the shape of the regenerating lens. Until around day 12 after lentectomy the posterior surface of the iris is covered by a dense mat of fibrous material which cannot be removed without damage to the iris and which obscures the events of cytoplasmic shedding. The regenerate becomes visible first around stage IV (day 12). A small but clear groove demarcates the regenerate from the rest of the iris. As regeneration progresses there is a marked reduction in debris on the iris surface and the regenerate appears as a U-shaped thickening occupying about one-third of the dorsal half of the iris. During later stages (VI–X) the regenerate protrudes into the pupil inferiorly and posteriorly towards the retina, but does not encroach laterally on the remaining pigmented iris tissue. Prior to secretion of the lens capsule the outline of individual cells is visible on the surface of the regenerate and some regenerates exhibit a prominent dimple on their posterior aspects. Following secretion of the capsule the surface of the regenerate becomes smooth. Quantitative studies show that volume and maximum section area of the regenerate are both more strongly correlated with developmental stage of regeneration than with time after lentectomy.  相似文献

The word ‘envy’ directs attention to feelings and cognitions that are especially important sources of information in our complicated sociality. As it is delimited by philosophers, economists, psychologists and others, envy is conceptually nested within a family that includes evil eye beliefs, inequity aversion, strong reciprocity and social comparison. Although the accumulation of work in these areas is substantial, anthropological treatments of envy are rare. Given repeated assertions of envy's universality and its potential importance for understanding widespread aspects of the human condition, a comparative eye seems essential. I present an account of ‘jealous’ in Aboriginal Australia via a framework that casts emotions as emerging from the interaction of psychobiological and sociocultural processes. According to this perspective, ‘envy’ should not be regarded as an invariant human condition but rather as a Western version of what, in a more generic human form, may both defend the individual and the larger sociality.  相似文献

Despite the large body of literature on ecomorphological adaptations to foraging in waterfowl, little attention has been paid to their sensory systems, especially vision. Here, we compare eye shape and retinal topography across 12 species representing 4 different foraging modes. Eye shape was significantly different among foraging modes, with diving and pursuit-diving species having relatively smaller corneal diameters compared to non-diving species. This may be associated with differences in ambient light intensity while foraging or an ability to tightly constrict the pupil in divers in order to facilitate underwater vision. Retinal topography was similar across all species, consisting of an oblique visual streak, a central area of peak cell density, and no discernible fovea. Because the bill faces downwards when the head is held in the normal posture in waterfowl, the visual streak will be held horizontally, allowing the horizon to be sampled with higher visual acuity. Estimates of spatial resolving power were similar among species with only the Canada goose having a higher spatial resolution. Overall, we found no evidence of ecomorphological adaptations to different foraging modes in the retinal ganglion cell layer in waterfowl. Rather, retinal topography in these birds seems to reflect the ‘openness’ of their habitats.  相似文献

The potential of stem cell (SC) therapies for eye diseases is well‐recognized. However, the results remain only encouraging as little is known about the mechanisms responsible for eye renewal, regeneration and/or repair. Therefore, it is critical to gain knowledge about the specific tissue environment (niches) where the stem/progenitor cells reside in eye. A new type of interstitial cell–telocyte (TC) ( www.telocytes.com ) was recently identified by electron microscopy (EM). TCs have very long (tens of micrometres) and thin (below 200 nm) prolongations named telopodes (Tp) that form heterocellular networks in which SCs are embedded. We found TCs by EM and electron tomography in sclera, limbus and uvea of the mouse eye. Furthermore, EM showed that SCs were present in the anterior layer of the iris and limbus. Adhaerens and gap junctions were found to connect TCs within a network in uvea and sclera. Nanocontacts (electron‐dense structures) were observed between TCs and other cells: SCs, melanocytes, nerve endings and macrophages. These intercellular ‘feet’ bridged the intercellular clefts (about 10 nm wide). Moreover, exosomes (extracellular vesicles with a diameter up to 100 nm) were delivered by TCs to other cells of the iris stroma. The ultrastructural nanocontacts of TCs with SCs and the TCs paracrine influence via exosomes in the epithelial and stromal SC niches suggest an important participation of TCs in eye regeneration.  相似文献

Environmental conditions induce phenotypic responses (behavioural, morphological and physiological) in many marine species. The boring mytilid Leiosolenus patagonicus inhabits different types of substrata, such as sandstone intertidal and hard subtidal substrata (here called ‘lifeless-substratum’) and shells of bivalve species (here called ‘live-substratum’), where they are exposed to different restrictions in their growth. We used geometric morphometric methods to compare the contour shell shapes from each type of substratum (live and lifeless) since we expected the body shape to differ between individuals from these different substrata. The results showed that the shell shape depends on the type of substratum where the larvae recruit. The mean shell shapes of individuals from the live-substratum are more slender than those of the individuals growing inside the lifeless-substratum. Individuals from live-substratum can adapt their phenotype depending on the oyster’s anti-parasitism responses, while in lifeless-substratum they are able to build their own refuges.  相似文献

Islands are often considered to be natural laboratories where repeated ‘evolutionary experiments’ have taken place. Consequently, islands have been key model systems in our understanding of evolutionary theory. The greater white‐toothed shrew (Crocidura russula) is of interest as it has invaded French Atlantic islands within the last few thousand years and is considered to be morphologically and genetically stable in this area. In this article, we study the shape of the mandible of the greater white‐toothed shrew on four islands and compare it with that of individuals from populations on the mainland to quantify the effects of insularity. The degree of insularity (i.e. island size and distance to the continent) is thought to be linked to differences in ecological characteristics of islands compared with the mainland. We used geometric morphometric analyses to quantify differences in size and shape between populations and employed a simple biomechanical model to evaluate the potential effects of shape differences on bite force. Specimens from island populations are different from continental populations in shape and mechanical potential of the mandible. Among islands, the mandible shows various shapes that are correlated with both the distance from the coast and island area. The shape differences are located on different parts of the mandible, suggesting different ecological constraints on each island. Moreover, these shapes are linked to the ‘mechanical potential’, which is markedly different between islands. Mechanical potential has been suggested to evolve in response to prey size and or mechanical properties. In conclusion, our results show that, in spite of the relatively recent colonization of the Atlantic Islands, the mandible of C. russula possesses a distinct shape. Moreover, the shape differs among islands and is probably linked to the consumption of different prey. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, ?? , ??–??.  相似文献

Although it is generally assumed that the lens regenerated in the newt eye after complete lentectomy is formed by cells derived from the dorsal iris epithelium, experimental evidence so far obtained for this transformation does not rule out participation of cells from the dorsal iris stroma. When the normal dorsal iris epithelium of adult Notophthalmus (Triturus) viridescens was isolated and cultured in the presence of frog retinal complex, newt lens tissue was produced in 88% of cultures. These lens tissues were positive for immunofluorescence for lens-fiber-specific gamma crystallins as well as for total lens protein. On the basis of a study of stromal cells contaminating the samples of dorsal iris epithelium and a test for the lens-forming capacity in vitro of the dorsal iris stroma in the presence of frog retinal complex, it is concluded that lens formation observed in the above experiment is not dependent on the contaminating stromal cells. This implies that, in Wolffian lens regeneration, fully differentiated adult cells completely withdrawn from the cell cycle are transformed into another cell type. An additional culture experiment demonstrated that lens-forming capacity is not restricted to the dorsal half of the iris epithelium, but extends into its ventral half.  相似文献
