Knowledge of factors influencing the timing of reproduction is important for animal conservation and management. Brown bears (Ursus arctos) are able to vary the birth date of their cubs in response to their fat stores, but little information is available about the timing of implantation and parturition in free-ranging brown bears. Body temperature and activity of pregnant brown bears is higher during the gestation period than during the rest of hibernation and drops at parturition. We compared mean daily body temperature and activity levels of pregnant and nonpregnant females during preimplantation, gestation, and lactation. Additionally we tested whether age, litter size, primiparity, environmental conditions, and the start of hibernation influence the timing of parturition. The mean date of implantation was 1 December (SD = 12), the mean date of parturition was 26 January (SD = 12), and the mean duration of the gestation period was 56 days (SD = 2). The body temperature of pregnant females was higher during the gestation and lactation periods than that of nonpregnant bears. The body temperature of pregnant females decreased during the gestation period. Activity recordings were also used to determine the date of parturition. The parturition dates calculated with activity and body temperature data did not differ significantly and were the same in 50% of the females. Older females started hibernation earlier. The start of hibernation was earlier during years with favorable environmental conditions. Dates of parturition were later during years with good environmental conditions which was unexpected. We suggest that free-ranging pregnant brown bears in areas with high levels of human activities at the beginning of the denning period, as in our study area, might prioritize investing energy in early denning than in early parturition during years with favorable environmental conditions, as a strategy to prevent disturbances caused by human.  相似文献

It has been documented in the many-lined sun skink (Mabuya multifasciata) that pregnant females select lower body temperatures (27.6–30.8 °C) than do nonpregnant females and adult males (29.7–35.7 °C). We therefore used the skink to test the hypothesis that the maximization of reproductive benefits should be achieved in pregnant females by shifting thermal preferences towards the levels optimal for embryonic development but entailing relatively small costs of reproduction. Data on adult males showed that temperatures maximizing swimming stamina (indicative of locomotor endurance) fell within the range of body temperatures selected by nonpregnant females and adult males. Data on swimming stamina and feeding performance of pregnant females, nonpregnant females and adult males measured at 26 and 30 °C showed that: (1) pregnancy impaired locomotor and feeding performances, but such impairments did not persist after parturition; (2) the degree of locomotor impairment during pregnancy was greater at 26 °C than at 30 °C, but the degree of feeding impairment during pregnancy was greater at 30 °C than at 26 °C. Pregnant females of M. multifasciata selecting body temperatures at about 29 °C could not only produce good-quality offspring in a relatively short gestation length but also reduce reproductive costs associated with locomotor and feeding impairments to some extent. Offspring birth mass and growth rate represent important life history traits, which influence many vital population and individual characteristics, while offspring survival is a key factor in variation in female reproductive success. For a threatened population of pinnipeds, such as New Zealand sea lions, Phocarctos hookeri, (Grey, 1844, NZ sea lions), understanding individual life history parameters and population dynamics is vital for their management and conservation. This is the first study of the behaviour of females during parturition, pup birth mass and growth, and pre-weaning survival of NZ sea lions, Enderby Island, Auckland Islands during austral summer breeding seasons, 2001/2002 to 2003/2004. Pregnant females arrived ashore 2.1 ± 0.16 days prior to giving birth. After parturition, mothers suckled their pups for 8.6 ± 0.16 days before leaving on their first foraging trip. Male pups were born significantly heavier than female (males 10.6 ± 1.4 kg, females 9.7 ± 0.9 kg). Pups lost on average 48 ± 0.14 g per day mass during the early postpartum period (between birth and mothers first foraging trip). Pup mortality did not vary by pup sex, birth mass, date of birth or any maternal characteristics however it varied significantly between years due to a bacterial infection epidemic (Pup mortality at 60 days: 2001 32%; 2002 21%; 2003 12%). The absolute growth rate per day for pups was 151 g/day over all years. Pup growth rate measured as the slope of linear line fitted to pup mass by age was consistently higher for pups with heavier birth mass, male pups and during the 2002 season. High offspring mortality and slow growth rates coupled with maternal foraging behaviour at their physiological limits may reflect a threatened species which has limited ability for population growth in an environment which is at the extreme of their historical range and impacted upon by fisheries.  相似文献

We examined changes in the concentrations of serum progesterone (P4), estradiol-17beta (E2), FSH, LH, prolactin (PRL), and inhibin to determine their interaction and their effect on the reproductive endocrine controls of pregnant and nonpregnant female Japanese black bears. Fourteen female bears were used in this study over a 2-yr period. In the first year, six of the bears were divided into two groups; a pseudopregnant group and a nonpregnant group. In the second year, the remaining eight bears were also divided into two groups; a pregnant group and a nonpregnant group. Pregnant and pseudopregnant bears had similar P4 trends with both groups exhibiting a significant increase in December, which is the suspected time of implantation in pregnant bears. These trends correlated with an increase in PRL levels, whereas low levels of LH were maintained throughout the year. Nonpregnant bears maintained low concentrations of P4, and compared with pregnant and pseudopregnant bears, they also exhibited a delayed elevation in PRL. Luteinizing hormone activity varied among individual animals, but regardless of reproductive status, fluctuation patterns of E2, FSH, and inhibin did not differ among bears. Our results suggest that PRL may play a luteotropic role in both pregnant and pseudopregnant bears, and is possibly responsible for inducing reactivation of the dormant corpus luteum that precedes implantation in the Japanese black bear.  相似文献

Trypanosoma lewisi has previously been described as a nonpathogenic parasite of the rat, but these experiments demonstrate that both embryonal and maternal death may occur in the pregnant rat after infection with this parasite.Rats infected early in the first week of pregnancy resorbed their young with little apparent difficulty, and exhibited parasitemia curves typical of nonpregnant infected females of similar age.Rats infected late in the first week of pregnancy experienced greater difficulty resorbing the young, with half of the females dying shortly before parturition. The parasitemia counts were also similar to those of nonpregnant infected rats.The majority of rats infected during the midterm of pregnancy died at the time of parturition, without giving birth to their young. The number of parasites in these animals was abnormally high compared to nonpregnant infected females. Unusually large numbers of dividing trypanosomes were present in the placentae of these animals, many of them containing 8–16 nuclei and kinetoplasts.Animals infected during the last week of pregnancy gave birth to litters of normal size with little apparent difficulty, and had extremely low parasite counts.The hematocrits of all groups of infected animals showed a decrease at the time of peak parasitemia, and the hematocrits of all groups of pregnant rats showed a decrease at the time of birth, except for those infected when day 2 pregnant. These animals completely resorbed their young. The weight losses of rats infected on day 2 and day 6 of pregnancy reflected a termination of pregnancy.  相似文献

Immune activation is implicated in the etiology of preterm labor, but little is known about macrophage number or distribution in the uterus or cervix at term. This study tested the hypothesis that macrophages migrate into the reproductive tract before the onset of parturition. Paraffin-embedded sections from the mid-uterine horn and cervix of C3/HeN mice on Days 15 and 18 of pregnancy, the day of birth (Day 19), and 1 day postpartum were stained with a pan-macrophage marker to analyze cell numbers and distribution. During pregnancy, uterine macrophages were dispersed in endometrium, usually associated with vasculature and subluminal epithelium. In myometrium, macrophages were clustered in stromal connective tissue; near term and postpartum, cells appeared to surround the muscle bundles. Total macrophage numbers were increased on Day 15 relative to those in nonpregnant controls, declined before birth, and increased postpartum. In the cervix, macrophages congregated in subepithelium, often perivascular or near ganglia. Macrophage numbers in the cervix peaked on Day 18, then declined to nonpregnant levels by the day after birth. Thus, macrophage numbers in the uterus were inversely related to those in the cervix. These findings raise the possibility that macrophages and their products may be involved in uterine contractility and cervical remodeling during the processes of parturition.  相似文献

To provide updated information on life history for improved fishery management, the reproductive cycle of the finetooth shark Carcharhinus isodon from Northwest Atlantic (NWA) populations was investigated by examining temporal changes in morphology and histology of reproductive organs. Changes in plasma concentrations of gonadal sex hormones in relation to reproductive stage were also examined. Increases in testis width, epididymis head width, plasma testosterone concentrations and occurrence of mature spermatozoa were observed in male sharks between December and April, suggesting a seasonal pattern in reproduction that culminates with copulatory activity in May. Increases in maximum follicular diameter, oviducal gland width, plasma 17β-estradiol concentrations and occurrence of vitellogenic follicles were observed in non-pregnant female sharks during the same time period along with the occurrence of newly pregnant females in May, demonstrating strong synchronicity between male and female reproductive cycles. Pregnant females bearing full-term embryos were also observed in May, indicating that parturition occurs between mid-May and early June and gestation requires 12 months. Only transient temporal changes in follicle size and oviducal gland width were observed in pregnant females, indicating that reproductive periodicity is biennial; nonetheless, a single female exhibiting signs of concurrent vitellogenesis and pregnancy was observed. Mean brood size ± S.D. was 3.9 ± 0.9 offspring/female. Fecundity was not significantly correlated with female size, in part due to an unexpectedly high rate of early embryo mortality, which occurred in 11% of pregnant females, and was more common in larger individuals. Changes in ovarian activity during mid-pregnancy were observed, suggesting possible roles for the ovary in regulating some aspects of early to mid-gestation. This study confirms that earlier characterizations of the reproductive cycle and fecundity in NWA finetooth sharks remain valid for use in fishery management. This study also highlights unusual features of finetooth shark pregnancy (e.g., early embryo death, mid-pregnancy changes in ovarian function) that may have broader relevance to understanding elasmobranch reproduction.  相似文献

The reproductive physiology of red pandas (Ailures fulgens fulgens) has not been well documented. This critically endangered species is not self‐sustaining in captivity despite several breeding populations, with low reproductive success and high infant mortality being leading causes of the decline. Hormone profiles were monitored in three groups of females (mated with birth, mated no birth, and not paired) to document pregnancy and parturition. Fecal samples were analyzed for progestins using a radio‐immuno assay. Females that gave birth had significantly higher progestins during the study period compared to females that mated and did not give birth and females that were not paired with a male. Two critical time frames were detected, Weeks 7–11 and Weeks 13–20, in which pregnant females could be differentiated from the others with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Detecting pregnancy in captive red pandas may assist animal care staff in management of the females and increase the survival rate of offspring. In callitrichid primates, reproduction is usually restricted to a single female per group. Reproductive rate is high and the occurrence of a postpartum estrus can lead to simultaneous lactation and pregnancy. In contrast, nonreproductive females often show ovarian inactivity. However, most studies on callitrichid reproductive physiology have been conducted in captivity, where conditions differ considerably from those in the wild, so that reproductive conditions may be strongly modified. Using fecal estrogen and progestogen measurements to monitor female reproductive status in 2 groups of wild moustached tamarins (Saguinus mystax), we examined 1) whether reproductive females in free-ranging groups also show postpartum estrus and 2) whether nonreproductive females demonstrate signs of ovarian activity. In both reproductive females, clear changes in the excretion pattern of progestogen and estrogen metabolites over time in combination with information on parturition dates allowed us to differentiate between pregnancy, a period of postpartum ovarian inactivity lasting for 54 and 64–82 days, and a period of ovarian activity before conception. Nonreproductive females demonstrated temporal fluctuations in hormone concentrations and absolute hormone levels that were similar to ones in the breeding females during the phase of ovarian activity. The results suggest that, in contrast to most captive female tamarins, reproductive females in wild groups of moustached tamarins do not have a postpartum estrus and that nonreproductive females show ovarian activity despite the presence of a breeding female. We therefore conclude that findings from captivity should be only carefully compared to the situation in the wild.  相似文献

Elasmobranchs are particularly vulnerable to overexploitation and population depletion, especially due to their life-history traits, such as low reproductive output and slow growth. Given that capture-induced parturition (abortion or premature birth) is a common consequence of fisheries in elasmobranchs, but still little studied, we investigated how the abortion/premature birth process varies in response to reproductive traits in a freshwater stingray, Potamotrygon amandae. Our results revealed that capture-induced parturition was affected by reproductive traits, such as litter size (one to seven) and gestation stage. The event occurred faster in pregnant females with high litter size during late pregnancy. Also, as found in other elasmobranchs, litter size was positively correlated with maternal size. These findings indicate that larger pregnant females in late pregnancy are more vulnerable to capture-induced parturition. This study improves our understanding of the capture-induced parturition process in stingrays, and provides useful information for management strategies and future recommendations for elasmobranch conservation.  相似文献

Serum samples were collected 1–3 times weekly from two Baird's tapirs (Tapirus bairdii) for 6 months in 1987–1988, and for more than 3 consecutive years beginning in 1989 to characterize hormone patterns during the estrous cycle and pregnancy. Based on serum progesterone concentrations, mean (±SEM) duration of the estrous cycle (n = 20) was 30.8 ± 2.6 days (range, 25–38 days) with a luteal phase length of 18.1 ± 0.4 days (range, 15–20 days). Mean peak serum progesterone concentrations during the luteal phase were 1.35 ± 0.16 ng/ml, and nadir concentrations were 0.19 ± 0.03 ng/ml during the interluteal period. Distinct surges of estradiol preceded luteal phase progesterone increases in most (14/20) cycles. Gestation length was 392 ± 4 days for three complete pregnancies. Mean serum progesterone concentrations increased throughout gestation and were 1.83 ± 0.13, 2.73 ± 0.13, and 4.30 ± 0.16 ng/ml during early, mid- and late gestation, respectively. Serum estradiol concentrations began to rise during mid-gestation, increasing dramatically during the last week of pregnancy. Patterns of serum estriol and estrone secretion during pregnancy were similar to that observed for estradiol. In contrast to progesterone and estrogens, serum cortisol concentrations were unchanged during pregnancy or parturition. Females resumed cycling 16.2 ± 2.0 days after parturition (n = 4) and, on two occasions, females became pregnant during the first postpartum estrus. These data suggest that the tapir cycles at approximately monthly intervals and that increases in serum progesterone are indicative of luteal activity. The interluteal period is relatively long, comprising approximately 40% of the estrous cycle. During gestation, progesterone concentrations are increased above luteal phase levels, and there is evidence of increased estrogen production during late gestation. The absence of increased cortisol secretion at the end of gestation suggests that this steroid does not play a major role in initiating parturition in this species. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Female hares were given an i.v. injection of 5 micrograms luteinizing-hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) between Days 7 and 19 (n = 21), 20 and 33 (n = 17) and 34 and 41 (n = 17) of pregnancy, and in the 3 days after parturition (n = 16). Whatever the stage of pregnancy, the LHRH injection induced a release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and an acute secretion of progesterone; these hormonal responses increased significantly during pregnancy, to reach values similar to those observed in nonpregnant, nonpseudopregnant females during the breeding season in the 3 days after parturition. However, the release of LH remained monophasic in pregnant and post-partum females, in contrast to the unmated females during the reproductive season, in which there was a biphasic profile. The proportion of ovulating females after LHRH treatment was approximately 60% at the beginning and end of pregnancy; and, after parturition, fell to 23% between Days 20 and 33. After Day 33, the pituitary response to LHRH was significantly higher in ovulating than in nonovulating females. At the beginning of pregnancy, 67% of females aborted after LHRH injection; after Day 20, the incidence of abortion decreased significantly and was 0% from Day 34. The amplitude and duration of progesterone secretion by the new corpora lutea resulting from ovulation after LHRH injection were similar to those of corpora lutea induced in nonpregnant females during the breeding season.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

In this study we investigated the reproductive patterns and postnatal development in the tent-making bat Artibeus watsoni . We sampled two populations in the Golfito Wildlife Refuge and Corcovado National Park, south-western Costa Rica, from June 2003 to March 2005. Most females were pregnant during the months of January and June, and most were lactating in March and July, indicating that this species exhibits seasonal bimodal polyoestry, with the first parturition peak occurring in February–March and the second in June–July. Additionally, we observed a postpartum oestrus following the first parturition, but not after the second. Females entered oestrus again in November–December and had a gestation period of c . 3 months. A female-biased sex ratio of neonates was observed during the second parturition period, and young were born at 32 and 56% of their mothers' body mass and length of forearm, respectively. Adult proportions in length of forearm were attained faster than adult proportions in body mass, and sustained flight was only possible after 35 days of age, when pups had achieved 100 and 80% of adult length of forearm and body mass proportions, respectively. Weaning and roosting independence occurred when young were c . 30–40 days old, and young females appeared to remain close to their place of birth, at least for their first mating period, whereas adult males were never recaptured near their birth site. In addition, sexual maturity was reached in as little as 3 months in females born during the first parturition period, whereas females born during the second birth period in June–July seemed to reach maturity at 6 months of age. Our results show that A. watsoni belongs to the faster lane of the slow–fast continuum of life-history variation in bats, which may be attributed primarily to its roosting and feeding ecology.  相似文献

The present experiments investigated the effects of pregnancy on performance in the Morris water maze and on hippocampal volume. In the first study, pregnant rats (in between the first and second trimester) outperformed nonpregnant rats on the Morris water maze on 1 day of testing. In the second study, rats were tested in a working memory variation of the maze in which the spatial location of the platform varied. Pregnant females traveled shorter distances than nonpregnant females during the first two trimesters, but performed worse than nonpregnant females during the third trimester. Latency measures showed a similar profile. Group differences in performance were not related to changes in swim speed. However, changes in performance in pregnant females may be related to estrogen, progesterone, and/or corticosterone levels during pregnancy, with low levels of estradiol and high levels of progesterone being associated with better performance. There were no significant differences between pregnant and nonpregnant animals on any of the brain measures, although pregnant animals tended to have a smaller hippocampus than nonpregnant animals. These results indicate that pregnancy can affect performance, possibly related to the hormonal changes that accompany pregnancy.  相似文献

Eight species of pangolin have been identified in the world. However, understanding of pangolin reproductive biology has been limited to fragmentary records. In this study, the concentration of serum progesterone in three pregnant and two nonpregnant rescued female Formosan pangolins (Manis pentadactyla pentadactyla) was monitored using a commercial progesterone radioimmunoassay kit. During gestation, the serum progesterone of pregnant pangolins A, B, and C remained at 28.5–55 ng/ml (n = 31 samples), 10.9–50.1 ng/ml (n = 34), and 12.4 and 33.5 ng/ml with a peak at 47.6 ng/ml (n = 19), respectively, whereas the serum progesterone of nonpregnant pangolins D and E remained at 1.99 ± 1.62 ng/ml (n = 80) and 2.27 ± 1.64 ng/ml (n = 27), respectively. From this study, it was found that female pangolin weighing as low as 2.14 kg was already capable of reproduction. For pregnant pangolins to give birth to viable offspring, their body weight must increase significantly, 63.89 and 134.0% in the study, from the time of inception or early pregnancy until parturition. In addition, study has found that both viable offspring were born fully developed and exceeded 80 g in weight. The period of gestation was found to be as short as 318 or longer than 372 days. Therefore, the Formosan pangolin should only be able to reproduce once a year. This study is the first insight into hormone assay for determining the gestation period of pangolin. Further investigations on the same subject are necessary to establish criteria for the recognition of reproductive status in pangolins. The role of social cues in the reproduction of social mammals, particularly carnivores, has been thoroughly studied and documented in literature. However, environmental cues such as resources of water, food, and shelter have been identified to a lesser extent. Pregnant lions (Panthera leo) are notoriously secretive during the final stages of pregnancy and postpartum. Behavioral indicators depicted by movement patterns obtained by remote detection of collared female lions in the Kruger National Park were necessary for the monitoring of birth timing. Over the study period, eight plus a potential three parturition incidences of collared females were recorded. Of the variables measured (step length, range size, duration, prey biomass, and rainfall), range size during the month of parturition was the most indicative movement pattern of a successful birth. By backdating the potential birth month of the litters, date of conception was calculated and our results revealed a correlation between the birthing peaks of preferred prey during the month of conception. Birth timing in conjunction with remote sensing and ecological factors were thus identified behaviors associated with denning.  相似文献

A porcine relaxin radioimmunoassay was developed to evaluate the profile of immunoreactive relaxin in rabbit plasma. Relaxin was nondetectable in pseudopregnant (Days 1, 4, 5-8, 12, and 16), nonpregnant, and male rabbits. However, in pregnant rabbits, relaxin was detected during the peri-implantation period (Days 4-9). Peak concentrations were reached on Day 15 and were maintained until parturition (Day 32). Relaxin concentrations abruptly decreased on Day 1 postpartum to low but detectable concentrations that were unchanged during the first week postpartum. In contrast, progesterone concentrations peaked earlier (Day 13), decreased after Day 25, and were not detectable on Day 1 postpartum. The effect of ovariectomy on the profile of plasma relaxin was evaluated. Four pregnant rabbits were ovariectomized (Day 13) and treated with medroxyprogesterone acetate to maintain pregnancy. As in normal pregnant rabbits, relaxin was observed initially during the peri-implantation period (Days 4-9) and increased to peak concentrations by Day 16. These concentrations were maintained until parturition and abruptly decreased on Day 1 postpartum to low yet detectable concentrations during the first week postpartum. The concentrations of relaxin in the plasma of ovariectomized medroxyprogesterone-treated rabbits were not different from those in three sham controls. These results indicate that the ovary is not a significant source of relaxin in pregnant rabbits. The unique observation of the presence of relaxin during the peri-implantation period suggests that this hormone has a role in preparing the rabbit uterus for implantation. The continued presence of relaxin during the first week postpartum may represent residual hormone, or it may suggest a physiological role during the early postpartum period.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to establish a noninvasive method of reproductive monitoring in the okapi (Okapia johnstoni). Fecal samples were collected three times a week from nonpregnant okapis (n = 3) for periods of 2, 9, and 23 months, respectively, and for 2 months each from pregnant okapis (n = 4) at different stages of gestation. Samples were analyzed with an enzyme-immunoas-say (EIA), using an antibody against pregnanediol, and the results are considered as measurements of unconjugated total immunoreactive progestagens (Pd-Pgs). Mean values of Pd-Pgs during the follicular (FP) and the luteal phases (LP) of the estrous cycles were 0.6 ± 0.1 μg/g and 6.1 ?0.3 μg/g feces, respectively. Matings occurred at the terminations of the LP. By dividing the number of entire LPs into the time over which samples were available, average estrous cycle lengths in two okapis were estimated to be 15.5 (n = 11 LP) and 15.8 (n = 36 LP) days, respectively. In three animals, gestation lengths of 423, 424, and 431 days were calculated by observed matings. During days -280 to -220 before parturition, the fecal Pd-Pgs constantly increased from about 20--60 μg/g fecès. Values were 100--350 μg/g during the last third of gestation. Values decreased in the week before parturition, and a continuous decline to FP values was observed within 3--4 days postpartum. During the 2 months postpartum investigated in one animal, the Pd-Pgs were in the FP range except one LP 3 weeks postpartum. It was concluded that fecal Pd-Pgs in female okapis are present in a ratio of ~1: 10:>100 during FP, LP, and late pregnancy, respectively. Water intake following dehydration was studied in pregnant (N = 5), lactating (N = 4) and nonpregnant, nonlactating (N = 5) Swedish domestic goats (Capra hircus) to investigate if reproductive period affected drinking. Plasma cortisol concentration and the hematocrit value were measured to evaluate stress. The goats were water deprived from 9.00 h until 15.05 h the next day. They were fed at 7.00 and 15.20 h. On the second day, ambient temperature was increased from 20°C to 38–39.5°C for 5.15 h to accelerate water losses. Water temperature during erhydration was 35 ± 1°C. Plasma Na concentration and osmolality increased most in dehydrated and heat-stressed pregnant and lactating goats. Pregnant goats lost 2.2 kg of their body weight. They drank 3.5 l immediately, followed by 2.5 l during afternoon eating. Lactating goats lost 4.9 kg and drank 6.3 l at once, and 3.9 l during feeding. Nonpregnant, nonlactating goats lost 1.7 kg and drank 2.6 l followed by 0.6 l. The large water consumption in pregnant and lactating goats caused hyponatremia and hemodilution, but they continued to drink during the night (0.5 ± 0.2 l and 0.8 ± 0.5 l, respectively). Renal free water clearance increased in all periods, with a long-lasting water diuresis during pregnancy. Plasma cortisol concentrations and the hematocrit values rose in connection with water intake. These results imply that the thirst center became less sensitive to inhibitory signals from the oropharyngeal tract and the diluted blood plasma during pregnancy and lactation. Catching sight of water was the most exciting procedure during these experiments.  相似文献

Dilatation of the uterine cervix at parturition is accompanied by a remarkable alteration in its biomechanical characteristics leading to a significant reduction in its strength and stiffness. Our previous studies and those of others have suggested the involvement of collagenolysis leading to cervical dilatation. This study provides further evidence for the occurrence of collagenolysis in the dilated guinea pig cervix at birth. The changes in collagenase and collagenase inhibitory activity in vivo in cervices of nonpregnant, pregnant, and postpartum guinea pigs were determined. There were no significant changes in procollagenase, collagenase inhibitory activity, and net procollagenase in animals at 25 and 50 days of gestation compared with nonpregnant animals. At parturition (68 +/- 2 days), there was a 6-fold increase in procollagenase, a 26-fold increase in collagenase inhibitory activity, and a 2-fold increase in net procollagenase activity. Cervices in organ culture obtained at birth produced 2.9-fold more procollagenase, 1.6-fold more collagenase inhibitory activity, and a 10-fold increase in net procollagenase activity when compared to nonpregnant or 25-day pregnant animals. These studies indicate that dilatation of the guinea pig cervix at parturition involves collagenase-mediated degradation of collagen in the cervix.  相似文献
