The effects of superficial wax on leaf wettability   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Experiments are described which provide more information on the role played by superficial waxes in the natural water-repellency of leaf surfaces. Contact angles of water were measured on a variety of leaf surfaces, before and after removal of wax, and on smooth films of the isolated superficial waxes. The differences in wettability of leaf surfaces are not wholly accounted for by differences which occur in the chemical and hydrophobic properties of their superficial waxes. Waxes isolated from leaves exhibiting contact angles less than 90° are usually more hydrophobic than the leaf surface itself. On most leaves exhibiting angles greater than 90° wax is the dominant factor governing water-repellency, the isolated wax normally making at least a 60 % contribution to the contact angle measured on the leaf surface. Additional factors, such as roughness, responsible for the occurrence of contact angles greater than 110° on certain leaf surfaces, reside in the wax layer. The hydrophobic properties of some leaves are unaffected by chloroform washing, revealing that superficial waxes play little part in their wettability.  相似文献

To evaluate the influence of leaf cuticular waxes on bacterial colonization of leaves, bacterial colonization patterns were examined on four glossy maize (Zea mays L.) mutants that were altered in their cuticular wax biosynthesis. Mutant gl3 was indistinguishable from the wild-type maize in its ability to foster colonization by the two bacterial species, Pantoea agglomerans and Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. nebraskensis. In contrast, the other three mutants supported the development of populations that significantly differed in size from those on the wild type. Mutant gl5 gl20 supported smaller populations of P. agglomerans, but not C. michiganensis, while mutant gl1 supported larger populations of C. michiganensis but not P. agglomerans. Mutant gl4 supported larger populations of both bacterial species. The exceptional ability of mutant gl4 to support bacterial colonization was hypothesized to result from the lower density of the crystalline waxes on gl4 than on the wild type, because a reduced crystal density could promote capillary water movement and water trapping among the wax crystals. This hypothesis was supported by the demonstration that the mechanical introduction of gaps among the wax crystals of the wild-type leaves resulted in the establishment of larger P. agglomerans populations on the altered leaves. These results provide the first direct evidence that leaf surface waxes affect bacterial leaf colonization at various stages of colonization and in a bacterial species-dependent manner.  相似文献

The leaf surface properties of 11 cuticular wax mutants of maize were characterized, and this information was used to identify the quantitative relations among distinct leaf surface traits. Compared with the wild‐type maize, these mutants were reduced 3–24% in their leaf surface hydrophobicity, 20–88% in the mass of cuticular waxes on their leaves, and 52–94% in the percentage of planar leaf surface area covered with epicuticular crystalline waxes. They also differed in the presence and abundance of the epicuticular crystalline waxes in each of seven structural classes. With the exception of one mutant, the mass of cuticular waxes produced by these mutants was positively correlated with the number of epicuticular crystalline waxes per unit area on their leaves. Furthermore, an increase of 0·4 mg of cuticular wax per gram of leaf (dry weight) was associated with a 1% increase in leaf surface area covered by epicuticular crystalline waxes, and this 1% increase was associated with a 2° increase in the contact angle of a water droplet on the leaf surface. Linear differences in the leaf surface hydrophobicity were associated with exponential differences in the mass of the cuticular waxes produced. Quantitative knowledge of these leaf surface properties is highly relevant to the interactions of leaves with environmental factors such as microbes, insects, agricultural chemicals, and pollutants.  相似文献

Regeneration of plant epicuticular waxes was studied in 24 plant species by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy. According to their regeneration behaviour, four groups could be distinguished: (i) regeneration occurs at all stages of development; (ii) regeneration occurs only during leaf expansion; (iii) regeneration occurs only in fully developed leaves; (iv) plants were not able to regenerate wax. Wax was removed from the leaves with water-based glue and a liquid polymer, i.e. water-based polyurethane dispersion. In young leaves these coverings could not be removed without damaging the leaves. After a few days, waxes appeared on the surface of these polymer films, which still adhered to the leaves. It is concluded that waxes move through the cuticle in a process similar to steam distillation. This hypothesis could be further substantiated in refined in vitro experiments. Wax isolated from Eucalyptus globulus was applied to a filter paper, subsequently covered with a liquid polymer and fixed onto a diffusion chamber filled with water. The diffusion chamber was put into a desiccator. After 8-10 days at room temperature, crystals similar in dimensions and shape to in situ crystals appeared on the surface of the polyurethane film. This indicates that waxes in molecular dimensions move together with the water vapor that permeates through the polymer membrane. Based on these results, we propose a new and simple hypothesis for the mechanism of wax movement: the molecules that finally form the epicuticular wax crystals are moved in the cuticular water current.  相似文献

The reaction of plants to environmental factors often varies with developmental stage. It was hypothesized, that also the cuticle, the outer surface layer of plants is modified during ontogenesis. Apple plantlets, cv. Golden Delicious, were grown under controlled conditions avoiding biotic and abiotic stress factors. The cuticular wax surface of adaxial apple leaves was analyzed for its chemical composition as well as for its micromorphology and hydrophobicity just after unfolding of leaves ending in the seventh leaf insertion. The outer surface of apple leaves was formed by a thin amorphous layer of epicuticular waxes. Epidermal cells of young leaves exhibited a distinctive curvature of the periclinal cell walls resulting in an undulated surface of the cuticle including pronounced lamellae, with the highest density at the centre of cells. As epidermal cells expanded during ontogenesis, the upper surface showed only minor surface sculpturing and a decrease in lamellae. With increasing leaf age the hydrophobicity of adaxial leaf side decreased significantly indicated by a decrease in contact angle. Extracted from plants, the amount of apolar cuticular wax per area unit ranged from only 0.9 microgcm(-2) for the oldest studied leaf to 1.5 microgcm(-2) for the youngest studied leaf. Differences in the total amount of cuticular waxes per leaf were not significant for older leaves. For young leaves, triterpenes (ursolic acid and oleanolic acid), esters and alcohols were the main wax components. During ontogenesis, the proportion of triterpenes in total mass of apolar waxes decreased from 32% (leaf 1) to 13% (leaf 7); absolute amounts decreased by more than 50%. The proportion of wax alcohols and esters, and alkanes to a lesser degree, increased with leaf age, whereas the proportion of acids decreased. The epicuticular wax layer also contained alpha-tocopherol described for the first time to be present also in the epicuticular wax. The modifications in the chemical composition of cuticular waxes are discussed in relation to the varying physical characteristics of the cuticle during ontogenesis of apple leaves.  相似文献

The effect of the canopy on leaf decomposition of beech (t Fagus sylvatica) and melojo oak (t Quercus pyrenaica) was studied during a period of 660 days in a mountain forest of central Spain; response of leaves to leaching was also studied to determine the effects of rainfall after leaf fall. Beech leaves lost 5.8% of their weight by leaching, whereas melojo oak leaves lost 13%. Under both types of canopy, beech leaves showed almost no difference in their decomposition patterns, with decay constants of 0.31 and 0.32 respectively. Melojo oak leaves showed quite a different behaviour under both canopies; decay constant was 0.47 under t Quercus pyrenaica and 0.77 under beech canopy. Total immobilization of nitrogen was less in the melojo oak forest. Effects of summer dryness were sharper in the melojo oak forest, where decomposition stopped during the summer. This delay in the decomposition might have been due to the lower canopy density in the melojo oak forest. The decomposition patterns of the leaves of both species, under the canopy of the other species, suggests what might happen in mixed stands. Thus, the presence of melojo oaks in beech forest would increase decay and decrease nitrogen immobilization. The presence of beech trees in melojo oak forests would improve microclimatic conditions and increase decay, whereas beech litter on the soil would immobilizate more nitrogen.  相似文献

The glossy varieties (A14 and Jing 2001) and glaucous varieties (Fanmai 5 and Shanken 99) of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were selected for evaluation of developmental changes in the composition and morphology of cuticular waxes on leaves and spikes. The results provide us with two different wax development patterns between leaf and spike. The general accumulation trend of the total wax load on leaf and spike surfaces is first to increase and then decrease during the development growth period, but these changes were caused by different compound classes between leaf and spike. Developmental changes of leaf waxes were mainly the result of variations in composition of alcohols and alkanes. In addition, diketones were the third important contributor to the leaf wax changes in the glaucous varieties. Alkanes and diketones were the two major compound classes that caused the developmental changes of spike waxes. For leaf waxes, β- and OH-β-diketones were first detected in flag leaves from 200-day-old plants, and the amounts of β- and OH-β-diketones were significantly higher in glaucous varieties compared with glossy varieties. In spike waxes, β-diketone existed in all varieties, but OH-β-diketone was detectable only in the glaucous varieties. Unexpectedly, the glaucous variety Fanmai 5 yielded large amounts of OH-β-diketone. There was a significant shift in the chain length distribution of alkanes between early stage leaf and flag leaf. Unlike C28 alcohol being the dominant chain length in leaf waxes, the dominant alcohol chain length of spikes was C24 or C26 depending on varieties. Epicuticular wax crystals on wheat leaf and glume were comprised of platelets and tubules, and the crystal morphology changed constantly throughout plant growth, especially the abaxial leaf crystals. Moreover, our results suggested that platelets and tubules on glume surfaces could be formed rapidly within a few days.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of microbiota in soil and litter may be significantly affected by the quality and quantity of localized patches of leaf organic matter. This study examined the relative effects of aqueous extracts of shed autumn leaves from American beech (Fagus grandifolia), sugar maple (Acer saccharum), red oak (Quercus rubra), and white oak (Quercus alba) on the density and diversity of gymnamoebae in laboratory cultures. Overall, the beech leaf extract produced the most growth of gymnamoebae followed by white oak with leaf extracts from maple and red oak producing least growth. Cultures using natural leaf litter from beneath beech trees had higher densities and diversity of gymnamoebae than leaf-litter cultures from a maple-oak stand. Soil microcosms confirmed that beech leaf extracts produced a higher density of gymnamoeba growth when added to soil cultures compared with maple and oak leaf extracts. Protein content, CHN (carbon and nitrogen content), and pH of the leaf extracts were assayed, but these alone were not sufficiently different to account for the effects. A dilution experiment indicated that some other concentration-dependent factor in the extract may produce the effects.  相似文献

The structures and composition of cuticular waxes deposited on the leaves of a typical desert moss, Syntrichia caninervis, were investigated. The wax crystals deposited on leaves shifted with leaf aging. The results of chemical analysis showed the main chemical components of the moss wax were fatty acids, alcohols and alkanes. Leaf aging increased the content of cuticular wax and the percentage of very long chain components, from 1150 μg g−1 DW and 13.6% in younger leaves to 2640 μg g−1 DW and 37.2% in aged leaves, respectively. Dehydration/hydration also augmented the wax content by 35.17% in juvenile leaves and by 1900% in lab-cultivated leaves after three-cycle treatments. Synthesis of hexadecanoic acid and tetracosane were predicted to be the first step of wax accumulation. The responses of cuticular waxes in crystal structure and chemical composition were recommended as a biomonitor for assessing the shift of ecological and environmental quality.  相似文献

This study investigated the seasonal modification of wax deposition, and the impact of epicuticular wax on gas-exchange as well as photoinhibition in Leucadendron lanigerum, a species from the Proteaceae family with wax-covered leaf surfaces and the stomata also partially occluded by wax. The results of this study demonstrated that the deposition of epicuticular wax in L. lanigerum is dependent on the age of the leaf as well as the season, and generation and regeneration of wax occur mostly in spring while transformation and also degeneration of wax crystals occur in winter. Epicuticular waxes decreased cuticular water loss, but had little impact on leaf reflectance. The temperature of leaves without wax was lower than that of wax-covered leaves, indicating that the rate of transpiration impacted more on leaf temperature than reflectance of light in the PAR range in L. lanigerum. The wax coverage at the entrance of stomata in L. lanigerum increased resistance to gas diffusion and as a consequence decreased stomatal conductance, transpiration and photosynthesis. Also, the results indicated that epicuticular waxes do help prevent photodamage in L. lanigerum, and so this property could benefit plants living in arid environments with high solar radiation.  相似文献

This study assessed the variation of leaf anatomy, chlorophyll content index (CCI), maximal stomatal conductance (g s max ) and leaf wettability within the canopy of an adult European beech tree (Fagus sylvatica L.) and for beech saplings placed along the vertical gradient in the canopy. At the top canopy level (CL28m) of the adult beech, CCI and leaf anatomy reflected higher light stress, while g s max increased with height, reflecting the importance of gas exchange in the upper canopy layer. Leaf wettability, measured as drop contact angle, decreased from 85.5°?±?1.6° (summer) to 57.5°?±?2.8° (autumn) at CL28m of the adult tree. At CL22m, adult beech leaves seemed to be better optimized for photosynthesis than the CL28m leaves because of a large leaf thickness with less protective and impregnated substances, and a higher CCI. The beech saplings, in contrast, did not adapt their stomatal characteristics and leaf anatomy according to the same strategy as the adult beech leaves. Consequently, care is needed when scaling up experimental results from seedlings to adult trees.  相似文献

Biological surfaces are multifunctional interfaces between the organisms and their environment. Properties such as the wettability and adhesion of particles are linked to the micro- and nanostructures of their surfaces. In this study, we used plant and artificial surfaces covered with wax crystals to develop a low-cost replication technique with high resolution. The technique is applicable for fragile surface structures, as demonstrated for three-dimensional wax crystals, and is fast to prevent shrinking of the biological material by water loss during the molding process. Thermal evaporation of octacosan-1-ol has been used to create microstructured surfaces with small platelets as templates for molding. Epoxy resin as filling material provided the smallest deviations from the original surface structures and can be used for replication of nanostructures as small as 4.5 nm. Contact angle measurements of leaves and their replicas show that this technique can be used to develop biomimetic surfaces with similar wettability as in the plant surfaces.  相似文献

Summary The effects of a number of factors, notably leaf mining insects, on the longevity of beech and holm oak leaves have been studied. The regular monitoring of individually labelled leaves was complemented by analysis of leaf fall data. Both methods confirm that these mining insects have only a slight impact on their host trees. The presence of first generation Phyllonorycter maestingella mines on beech leaves and winter generation P. messaniella mines on holm oak leaves accelerates leaf loss. Beech leaves mined by second generation P. maestingella and Rhynchaenus fagi did not show this accelerated loss. Their patterns of leaf fall can be explained by within-tree variation in both mine distribution and the timing of leaf fall. It is argued that this premature leaf fall is a damage response, and is not an attempt by the tree to regulate miner numbers.  相似文献

Responses of CO2 assimilation and stomatal conductance to decreasing leaf water potential, and to environmental factors, were analysed in a mixed natural stand of sessile oak (Quercus petraea ssp. medwediewii) and beech (Fagus svlvatica L.) in Greece during the exceptionally dry summer of 1998. Seasonal courses of leaf water potential were similar for both species, whereas mean net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were always higher in sessile oak than in beech. The relationship between net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance was strong for both species. Sessile oak had high rates of photosynthesis even under very low leaf water potentials and high air temperatures, whereas the photosynthetic rate of beech decreased at low water potentials. Diurnal patterns were similar in both species but sessile oak had higher rates of CO2 assimilation than beech. Our results indicate that sessile oak is more tolerant of drought than beech, due, in part, to its maintenance of photosynthesis at low water potential.  相似文献

During the last 20 years, a wealth of data dealing with scanningelectron microscopy of plant surfaces has been published. Theultrastructure of epidermal surfaces has been investigated withrespect to taxonomic, as well as functional aspects. Withinthe latter, water-repellency has received much attention andhas been well documented. Water-repellency is based on surfaceroughness caused by different microstructures (trichomes, cuticularfolds and wax crystals), together with the hydrophobic propertiesof the epicuticular wax. In addition, contaminating particlesare carried away by water droplets, resulting in a cleaned surface(Lotus-effect). Therefore, rough, waxy leaves are not only water-repellentbut anti-adhesive with respect to particulate contamination.Based on 200 water-repellent plant species, the present papersurveys micromorphological characteristics of anti-adhesiveplant surfaces. Leaves that are permanently water-repellentcan be differentiated by distictively convex to papillose epidermalcells and a very dense layer of epicuticular waxes. Leaves thatare water-repellent for only a limited period of time have onlyslightly convex epidermal cells and often have a less densewax layer. Finally, an overview is given on the occurrence ofwater-repellency among different life forms and within differenthabitats. Water-repellency is concentrated in herbaceous species, while it is rare in trees. Among different habitats, subtropicalregions, wetlands and disturbed areas appear to have more specieswith water-repellent leaves. The importance of roughness andwater-repellency, respectively, as the basis of an anti-adhesive,self-cleaning surface, in comparison to other functions of microstructures,is discussed.  相似文献

Though mulberry (Morus alba) tree shows great adaptations to various climate conditions, their leaf water status and photosynthesis are sensitive to climate changes. In the current study, seven widely planted mulberry cultivars in Chongqing, Southwest China, were selected to analyze leaf cuticular wax characteristics, gas exchange index, post-harvest leaf water status and their relationships, aiming to provide new theory in screening high resistant mulberry cultivars. Mulberry trees formed rounded cap-type idioblasts on the adaxial leaf surface. Film-like waxes and granule-type wax crystals covered leaf surfaces, varying in crystal density among cultivars. The stomatal aperture on the abaxial surface of cultivars with high wax amount was smaller than that of cultivars with low wax amount. The amount of total wax was negatively correlated with the net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E) and stomatal conductance (g s) and positively correlated with the moisture retention capacity. It suggested that both cuticular wax and stomatal factor might be involved in regulating water loss in mulberry leaves under field conditions. The variability in moisture retention capacity and cuticular wax characteristics might be important in evaluating and screening mulberry cultivars for increasing silk quality and silkworm productivity.  相似文献

The present study was carried out to investigate the degree of leaf wetness and its capacity to retain water droplets in relation to leaf morphological characteristics of Valeriana jatamansi J. grown under open and shade habitats. Leaves developed in open habitats had less wettability but higher capacity to retain water droplets and more number of stomata than shade leaves. A significant positive correlation of contact angle () were noticed with trichome length, droplet retention and wax content.  相似文献

We report eight new mutants in Arabidopsis thaliana possessing altered leaf morphology and epicuticular wax. These were isolated from a T-DNA-mutagenized population using a visual screen for altered leaf reflectance, i.e. increased glaucousness or glossiness. The mutants were placed into three distinct classes based on alterations in overall plant morphology: knobhead (knb), bicentifolia (bcf), and wax. The four knb mutants formed callus-like growths in the axillary region of the rosette leaves and apical meristem, the two bcf mutants produced hundreds of narrow leaves, and the two wax mutants had leaves and stems that were more glossy than wild type and organs that fused during early development. Leaves of knb and bcf were more glaucous and abnormally shaped than wild type. Epicuticular wax crystals over knb and bcf leaf surfaces (where none were present on wild type) likely contributed to their more glaucous appearance. In contrast, the glossy appearance of the wax mutants was associated with a reduced epicuticular wax load on both leaves and stems. One representative from each phenotypic class was selected for detailed analyses of epicuticular wax chemistry. All three lines, knb1, bcf1, and wax1, had dramatic alterations in the total amounts and relative proportions of their leaf epicuticular wax constituents.  相似文献
