Sixteen accessions of the xerohalophyte, Atriplex canescens (Pursh.) Nutt., differing in tendency to accumulate Na or K in leaf tissues, were compared for salt tolerance in a greenhouse study. Plants were grown along a salinity gradient from 72 to 2017 mol/m3 NaCl measured in the root zone. Growth rates (RGR) were negatively affected by salinity for all accessions. Initial leaf levels of Na (measured before exposing plants to saline solutions) were positively correlated with subsequent RGR's of accessions on the salinity gradient (r = 0.60 - 0.88, P < 0.05 across salinity levels), whereas initial leaf K levels were negatively correlated (r = -0.68 to -0.85, P < 0.01 across salinity levels). Varieties linearis (S. Wats.) Munz and grandidentatum Stutz & Sanderson had greater tendency for Na accumulation, lower tendency for K, and higher growth rates on saline solutions than var. occidentalis (Torr. & Frem.) Welsh & Stutz accessions. Within var. occidentalis accessions, RGRs were negatively correlated with initial leaf levels of K but not Na. Postexposure leaf Na and K levels were not strongly correlated with RGR's. All accessions responded to salinity by increasing their uptake of Na, which is the primary mechanism of osmotic adjustment to salinity in this species. It is suggested that differences in tendency to accumulate Na or K among A. canescens genotypes are related to their specialization for saline or xeric habitats, respectively.  相似文献

This paper adds new data on the pollen and orbicule morphology of 61 Dioscorea L. (Dioscoreaceae) species to the survey of Schols et al . (2001). The results indicate that pollen characters may be significant in infrageneric systematics in Dioscorea . Pollen and orbicule characters are described based on observations with light microscopy, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and are critically evaluated and discussed in the context of existing hypotheses of systematic relationships within the genus. Pollen is mostly disulculate (sometimes monosulcate) with a perforate, microreticulate, striate, gemmate, rugulate, or cerebroid perforate sexine. The basal section Stenophora is one of the few sections with monosulcate pollen. Brachyandra , Cardiocapsa , and Seriflorae , three Malagasy sections, are characterized by striate pollen. Pollen morphology strongly supports section Enantiophyllum as a monophyletic group. The correlation between pollen size and tuber type, as suggested previously by P. Su (1987), is confirmed by our data. As found in our earlier survey, orbicules in Dioscorea are mostly spherical with a smooth or spinulose surface.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 143 , 375–390.  相似文献

The pollen morphology of two Bienertia species and 28 Suaeda species from the Old World has been studied with light and scanning electron microscopy. Pollen morphological characters used in this study include pollen diameter, pore number, pore diameter, operculum diameter, chord distance, exine thickness, plus number and characteristics of exine spinules and operculum spinules. Using these characters, the pollen of Bienertia is clearly distinguished from that of Suaeda. In addition, pollen data support recent molecular studies which merge the genus Borszczowia into Suaeda. The pollen grains of Suaeda show notable variation; in some cases this allows morphological distinctions to be made between species. Taxonomically, pore number is observed to be a more useful character than pollen diameter. Principal components analysis (PCA) shows only a weak correlation between pollen characters and habit (life form), habitat, mode of photosynthesis or phylogenetic relationships. Interestingly, however, the annual C3 and C4 species of section Schoberia are usually characterised by a higher pore number than the perennial C4 species.  相似文献

The effect of salt stress on the growth and water use efficiency of the xerohalophyte Atriplex canescens (Pursh.) Nutt. in drying soil was determined by growing plants to the wilting point in soils receiving a one-time irrigation of nutrient solution containing low, medium, and high levels of NaCl. The experiment compared three varieties of A. canescens that differed in salt tolerance and capacity for Na and K uptake in previous research. Contrary to expectations, we did not find that water and salt stress were strictly additive in reducing plant performance. Soil salts enhanced the growth performance of the plants in drying soil by increasing their days to wilting, ability to extract water from the soil, organic matter production, and water use efficiency. The variety with the highest salt tolerance also had the highest growth rates and water use efficiency on drying soils. We conclude that tolerances to water and salt stress are linked through a common mechanism of Na uptake for osmotic adjustment in this species.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Within Chenopodioideae, Atripliceae have been distinguished by two bracteoles enveloping the female flowers/fruits, whereas in other tribes flowers are described as ebracteolate with persistent perianth. Molecular phylogenetic hypotheses suggest ‘bracteoles’ to be homoplastic. The origin of the bracteoles was explained by successive inflorescence reductions. Flower reduction was used to explain sex determination. Therefore, floral ontogeny was studied to evaluate the nature of the bracteoles and sex determination in Atripliceae.

Methods

Inflorescences of species of Atriplex, Chenopodium, Dysphania and Spinacia oleracea were investigated using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

Key Results

The main axis of the inflorescence is indeterminate with elementary dichasia as lateral units. Flowers develop centripetally, with first the formation of a perianth primordium either from a ring primordium or from five individual tepal primordia fusing post-genitally. Subsequently, five stamen primordia originate, followed by the formation of an annular ovary primordium surrounding a central single ovule. Flowers are either initially hermaphroditic remaining bisexual and/or becoming functionally unisexual at later stages, or initially unisexual. In the studied species of Atriplex, female flowers are strictly female, except in A. hortensis. In Spinacia, female and male flowers are unisexual at all developmental stages. Female flowers of Atriplex and Spinacia are protected by two accrescent fused tepal lobes, whereas the other perianth members are absent.

Conclusions

In Atriplex and Spinacia modified structures around female flowers are not bracteoles, but two opposite accrescent tepal lobes, parts of a perianth persistent on the fruit. Flowers can achieve sexuality through many different combinations; they are initially hermaphroditic, subsequently developing into bisexual or functionally unisexual flowers, with the exception of Spinacia and strictly female flowers in Atriplex, which are unisexual from the earliest developmental stages. There may be a relationship between the formation of an annular perianth primordium and flexibility in floral sex determination.  相似文献

The mechanism of sex determination in dioecious species of the genus Atriplex (Chenopodiaceae) has not been determined. This paper reports the discovery of a male-specific DNA fragment in the diploid dioecious species A. garrettii. DNA samples extracted individually from ten male and ten female plants were bulked by sex. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fragments were generated in the two bulks in order to identify markers that were polymorphic between male and female plants. A total of 158 decamer primers were tested. A 2075 base-pair (bp) male-specific DNA fragment generated with the OPAF-14 primer was identified. The fragment was cloned and partially sequenced and 24-mer primers that exclusively amplified this fragment were constructed. When 124 male plants, 126 female plants, and one hermaphroditic plant were tested individually, the male-specific 2075-bp DNA fragment was present in the hermaphrodite and all but one of the male plants, and was absent in all female plants. A smaller DNA fragment (~1800 bp) that was homologous to the 2075-bp fragment was amplified from the single male plant that lacked the 2075-bp fragment. Cytogenetic analysis revealed no apparent heteromorphic sex chromosomes. These observations suggest that sex determination in A. garrettii is genetic, with no evidence of heteromorphic sex chromosomes.  相似文献

Atriplex prostrata Boucher, a facultative halophyte, exhibits significant reduction in height and biomass and in the width of the cortex and vascular tissue under saline conditions. Therefore, the goal of this investigation was to determine the effect of salinity on plant growth as well as on the patterns of lignification, peroxidase activity, and extensin deposition. Biomass, leaf area, internode length, water potential, photosynthesis, transpiration, and ion content were measured. In addition, lignin, peroxidase, and extensin were, respectively, examined via phloroglucinol staining, peroxidase staining, and immunostaining with extensin antibody on tissue prints of free-hand stem sections. Length of internodes and leaf area significantly decreased with increased salinity, and net photosynthesis declined dramatically as well. There was a significant accumulation of Na+ in organs when plants were grown in saline solutions, while the concentration of K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ decreased. The signals in tissue prints showed that soluble peroxidase and extensin accumulated in the first three internodes of A. prostrata grown under saline conditions. In contrast, lignification was reduced under saline growth conditions in the third and fourth internodes. These results indicate that extensin may replace lignin in providing mechanical support for cells, while stems remain in a juvenile stage because of growth retardation caused by salinity.  相似文献

Pollen morphology of the five Brazilian species of the genus Fevillea (F. bahiensis, F. cordifolia, F. passiflora, F. pedatifolia, and F. trilobata) was studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. Pollen in these species is generally stenopalynous, which is in agreement with observations in previous studies of other species. Pollen is shed in monads and characterised by being isopolar, radially symmetric, prolate, and striate. Pollen is of medium size, tricolporate, with long and narrow colpi, a circular endoaperture and a reduced polar area. The exine is up to 2 μm thick.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Genetic variability was estimated for Atriplex tatarica from 25 populations in the Czech Republic. Since its north-western range margin is in central Europe, a relationship between marginality and low within-population genetic diversity was tested in accordance with the Central-Marginal Model. METHODS: Population genetic diversity was expressed by assessing patterns of variation at 13 putatively neutral allozyme loci (comprising 30 putative alleles) within and between 25 natural populations of A. tatarica along a north-west-south-east transect in the Czech Republic. KEY RESULTS: Atriplex tatarica is a species of human-made habitats with a mixed mating system and wide geographic distribution. Overall, A. tatarica displayed moderate levels of genetic diversity in comparison with other herbaceous plants. The percentage of loci that were polymorphic was 47.1%, with average values of 1.55, 0.151 and 0.155 for the average number of alleles per polymorphic locus (A), observed heterozygosity (Ho) and expected heterozygosity (He), respectively. There was only weak evidence of inbreeding within populations (FIS=0.031) and significant population differentiation (FST=0.214). Analysis of the data provides no evidence for isolation-by-distance for the whole study area. However, Mantel tests were highly significant for the marginal Bohemian region and non-significant for the central Moravian region. While northern populations of A. tatarica showed significantly lower allelic richness (A=1.462) than populations from the southern part of the study area (A=1.615), they did not differ in observed heterozygosity (Ho), gene diversity (HS), inbreeding within populations (FIS) or population differentiation (FST), despite generally lower values of particular genetic measurements in the marginal region. CONCLUSIONS: Genetic diversity, with the exception of allelic richness, was not significantly lower at the margins of the species' range. This, therefore, provides only weak support for the predictions of the Central-Marginal Model.  相似文献

Pollen grain morphology, sculpturing, and wall ultrastructure are investigated in two species ofCoris (Primulaceae),C. monspeliensis L. andC. hispanica Lange. The study includes both acetolysed and unacetolysed pollen. No evidence of any major palynological difference is recorded between these two species, apart from a somewhat larger pollen inC. monspeliensis. However,Coris can be distinguished from the remaining members of thePrimulaceae by the conjunction of relatively large pollen grains, prominent margo, and particular tectal pattern causing a reticulate surface with minute luminal perforations decreasing towards the colpi. From both these distinctive features, and others typically primulaceous, some evolutionary considerations are inferred. Finally, the higher proportion of irregular grains inC. hispanica is interpreted in light of environmental stress.  相似文献

The Burseraceae are a medium‐sized family in which 18 genera are currently recognised. They are the subject of a long‐term project to describe the pollen morphology from light, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy. The pollen morphology of tribe Protieae has been published, as well as an account of the pollen of the African taxa in the family. Pollen data for the other two tribes, Bursereae and Canarieae, are more or less complete. The pollen of all the genera have been examined, with the exception of the recently described Pseudodacryodes Pierlot for which, currently, there is no pollen material available. This paper summarises the results.

There is considerable variation in exine and aperture features between, and occasionally within, the genera and 14 major pollen types are defined, including two previously undescribed types: ‘Canarium oleiferum’ and ‘Canarium gracile’. The distribution of pollen characteristics throughout the family is compared with previously published tribal and subtribal groupings, as well as with current ideas of generic relationships from molecular analyses. Comparisons show notable congruence of pollen data with molecular data. To some extent pollen morphology is different for each of the subtribes. Nevertheless, there are some notable exceptions, for example, the pollen of Garuga and Boswellia are remarkably similar, although Garuga has been included, somewhat tenuously, in tribe Protieae, and Boswellia is included in tribe Bursereae, subtribe Boswelliinae. In a recent molecular tree Garuga and Boswellia appear to be closely related, and this supports the conclusion, based on several macromorphological characters as well as pollen, that Garuga should be transferred to tribe Bursereae.  相似文献

Pollen grains ofVigna angularis and its var.nipponensis are described with special reference to fine structure of the infratectum of the exine. They are 3-porate-operculate with granular infratectum and thin foot-layer. These features agree with those characterizing the genusVigna. In this species var.angularios and var.nipponensis are quite similar in pollen morphology. This supports the view that the two are closely related.  相似文献

Pollen transport to a receptive stigma can be facilitated through different pollinators, which submits the pollen to different selection pressures. This study aimed to associate pollen and stigma morphology with zoophily in species of the tribe Phaseoleae. Species of the genera Erythrina, Macroptilium and Mucuna with different pollinators were chosen. Pollen grains and stigmas were examined under light microscopy (anatomy), scanning electronic microscopy (surface analyses) and transmission electronic microscopy (ultrastructure). The three genera differ in terms of pollen wall ornamentation, pollen size, pollen aperture, thickness of the pollen wall, amount of pollenkitt, pollen hydration status and dominant reserves within the pollen grain, while species within each genus are very similar in most studied characteristics. Most of these features lack relationships to pollinator type, especially in Erythrina and Mucuna. Pollen reserves are discussed on a broad scale, according to the occurrence of protein in the pollen of invertebrate- or vertebrate-pollinated species. Some pollen characteristics are more associated to semi-dry stigma requirements. This apical, compact, cuticularised and secretory stigma occurs in all species investigated. We conclude that data on pollen and stigma structure should be included together with those on floral morphology and pollinator behaviour for the establishment of functional pollination classes.  相似文献

A growing body of experimental data obtained from sporoderm ontogenetic studies led to the appearance of the ‘micellar’ hypothesis. The hypothesis is that the sequence of sporoderm developmental events represents the sequence of self-assembling micellar mesophases, initiated by genomically given physico-chemical parameters, which are then picked up by physico-chemical self-assembly. However, besides morphological evidence, the best proof of this hypothesis would be an experimental modelling of sporoderm-like patterns. The main idea of this study is to remove the influence of the genome, selecting substances and their concentrations for simulations to replace it, and then to trace what ‘pure’ self-assembly is capable of constructing. Our aim in this study was to simulate mainly young structures in sporoderm development, i.e. the glycocalyx and the primexine. Several polysaccharide gels (as a callose substitute) and surfactants (as glycocalyx and sporopollenin monomer substitutes) were mixed at different concentrations and combinations, thermally set and left to condense. A number of patterns were obtained in colloidal solutions in the course of condensation, simulating structures at different stages of exine development. Their structures were observed and analysed with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Our first experiments on the modelling of biological patterns in vitro have shown encouraging results.  相似文献

Dioecy has evolved independently several times in the large, mostly tropical genusSolanum. In all cases of dioecy inSolanum functionally male flowers have normal anthers, normal pollen and reduced stigmas while functionally female flowers have stigmas and anthers that appear normal but contain non-functional, usually inaperturate pollen. The inaperturate pollen has living cytoplasm, but apparently never germinates and it has been hypothesised that the pollen in these functionally female flowers is retained as a pollinator reward. Pollen morphology is compared in twelve of the thirteen known dioecious species ofSolanum, and some stages in the the development of inaperturate pollen in the anthers of functionally female flowers ofSolanum confertiseriatum of Western Ecuador are examined. Observations on the development and morphology of inaperturate pollen in functionally female flowers ofSolanum are related to hypotheses about the evolution of dioecy in the genus.  相似文献

Cornukaempferia is a recently described genus of Zingiberaceae which only occurs in Thailand as a rare genus with limited geographical distribution. Only three species have been described so far, including a recently described new species, C. larsenii. These three species are morphologically very similar and additional data on other biological aspects are useful for the elucidation of their relationship. Pollen morphology of all three species of genus Cornukaempferia has been studied by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The pollen grains are monad, spherical, inaperturate. The exine sculpture is echinate with psilate between the spines for C. aurantiflora and C. longipetiolata, or echinate with regulate between the spines for C. larsenii. This obser-vation helps support the taxonomic status of C. larsenii.  相似文献

Members of the Chenopodiaceae are the most dominant elements in the central Asian desert. The different genera and species within this family are common in desert vegetation types. Should it prove possible to link pollen types in this family to specific desert vegetation, it would be feasible to trace vegetation successions in the geological past. Nevertheless, the morphological similarity of pollen grains in the Chenopodiaceae rarely permits identification at the generic level. Although some pollen classifications of Chenopodiaceae have been proposed, none of them tried to link pollen types to specific desert vegetation types in order to explore their ecological significance. Based on the pollen morphological characters of 13 genera and 24 species within the Chenopodiaceae of eastern central Asia, we provide a new pollen classification of this family with six pollen types and link them to those plant communities dominated by Chenopodiaceae, for example, temperate dwarf semi‐arboreal desert (Haloxylon type), temperate succulent halophytic dwarf semi‐shrubby desert (Suaeda, Kalidium, and Atriplex types), temperate annual graminoid desert (Kalidium type), temperate semi‐shrubby and dwarf semi‐shrubby desert (Kalidium, Iljini, and Haloxylon types), and alpine cushion dwarf semi‐shrubby desert (Krascheninnikovia type). These findings represent a new approach for detecting specific desert vegetation types and deciphering ecosystem evolution in eastern central Asia.  相似文献
