The aim of this study was to estimate the amount of pollen produced by anemophilous woody taxa with allergenic properties and with considerable contribution in the concentration of pollen in the air of a Mediterranean city (Thessaloniki, Greece). The taxa selected are Corylus avellana, Cupressus sempervirens var. horizontalis and var. pyramidalis, Olea europaea and Platanus orientalis; each was studied in more than one sampling stations differing in elevation, direction or both. O. europaea produced the highest number of pollen grains per flower (1.3 × 105 ± 0.1 × 105) and P. orientalis the highest per inflorescence (3.3 × 106 ± 0.2 × 106). At the level of crown, pollen grains produced were of the order of 109 per surface/volume unit for O. europaea and the two C. sempervirens varieties; for the other two taxa, they were of the order of 106. Pollen production was lower at higher elevation and northern direction and depended on the size of the floral unit sampled (flower for O. europaea, inflorescence for all other species): the bigger the floral unit, the more pollen it contained. Our results and reports from other areas, where C. sempervirens and O. europaea grow, show that these two Mediterranean species produce comparable amounts of pollen at the levels of inflorescence or flower, respectively, wherever they occur.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to collect new information about pollen morphology and pollen wall structure comparing Cupressus species from the Old World and New World. Cupressus is a nonmonophyletic genus that includes species that appear to be divided into Old World and New World clades. Observations in this study on cypress pollen indicate that grain size and composition of intine β-glucans are different between the considered Old World and New World species. Different from all the other American cypress species, pollen of C. macrocarpa reacted to dying in a similar manner to Old World species. Rehydrated pollen grains collected from 20 Asian, Afro-Mediterranean and American cypress species were measured under a light microscope. The size of the pollen grains and the percentage of intine in relation to the pollen grain diameter were significantly different between Old World and New World species. Pollen wall composition was tested after addition of different dyes to the hydration solution, and subsequent observations were carried out by light and fluorescence microscopy. Lugol and calcofluor staining showed differences in composition of the middle and inner intine layers between New World and Old World species.  相似文献

Plant species vary greatly in the degree to which floral morphology restricts access to the flower interior. Restrictiveness of flower corollas may influence heterospecific pollen receipt, but the impact of floral morphology on heterospecific pollen transfer has received little attention. We characterized patterns of pollinator visitation and quantities of conspecific and heterospecific pollen receipt for 29 species with a range of floral morphologies in a prairie community dominated by the introduced plant Euphorbia esula (leafy spurge) which has an unrestrictive morphology. Pollinator overlap was significantly greater between Euphorbia and other unrestrictive flowers than restrictive flowers. Compared to flowers with restrictive morphologies, unrestrictive flowers received significantly more Euphorbia pollen, more heterospecific pollen from other sources, and a greater diversity of pollen species, but not more conspecific pollen. However, stigmatic surface area was significantly larger for flowers with unrestrictive morphologies, and the density of Euphorbia and other heterospecific pollen per stigmatic area did not significantly differ between flower types. These findings suggest that the smaller stigma size in restrictive flowers partly accounts for their decreased heterospecific pollen receipt, but that restrictiveness also allows species to increase the purity of pollen loads they receive. Given that restrictive flowers receive fewer heterospecific pollen grains but at a higher density, the effect of restrictiveness on fecundity depends on whether absolute quantity or density of heterospecific pollen affects fecundity more. Our results also indicate that abundant neighbors are not necessarily important heterospecific pollen sources since Euphorbia pollen was rarely abundant on heterospecifics.  相似文献

The two widespread tropical Solanum species S. paniculatum and S. stramoniifolium are highly dependent on the visits of large bees that pollinate the flowers while buzzing them. Both Solanum species do not offer nectar reward; the rewarding of bees is thus solely dependent on the availability of pollen. Flower visitors are unable to visually assess the amount of pollen, because the pollen is hidden in poricidal anthers. In this study we ask whether and how the amount of pollen determines the attractiveness of flowers for bees. The number of pollen grains in anthers of S. stramoniifolium was seven times higher than in S. paniculatum. By contrast, the handling time per five flowers for carpenter bees visiting S. paniculatum was 3.5 times shorter than of those visiting S. stramoniifolium. As a result foraging carpenter bees collected a similar number of pollen grains per unit time on flowers of both species. Experimental manipulation of pollen availability by gluing the anther pores showed that the carpenter bees were unable to detect the availability of pollen by means of chemical cues before landing and without buzzing. Our study shows that the efficiency of pollen collecting on S. paniculatum is based on large inflorescences with short between‐flower search times and short handling time of individual flowers, whereas that of S. stramoniifolium relies on a large amount of pollen per flower. Interestingly, large carpenter bees are able to adjust their foraging behaviour to drastically different strategies of pollen reward in otherwise very similar plant species.  相似文献

The potential influence of pollen-tube competition on offspring “quality” has received considerable attention in recent years. Yet the prevalence of pollen competition in natural populations is largely unknown because few investigators have actually measured rates of pollen deposition on stigmas. In this study, we assess the potential for pollen-tube competition in natural populations of the self-compatible, pollinator-dependent herbaceous perennial, Hibiscus moscheutos. Individual flowers averaged two to four visits per 15 min by potential pollinators (Ptilothrix and Bombus), and about 34% of these visits involved contact with a stigma. The median number of pollen grains deposited on virgin stigmas per contact visit was 70 grains (values ranged from 0 to 889), and flowers averaged about four contact visits per hour. Approximately 360 pollen grains must reach stigmas for full seed set to occur in a typical flower (an average ovary has 139 ovules, and 2.6 pollen grains are required per seed). Within 2 and 3 hr exposure to pollinators, 65% and 97% of the flowers received excess pollen (>360 grains) and median stigmatic pollen loads exceeded the number of ovules by a factor of 4.0 and 5.4, respectively. Based on 3 yr observations, it is concluded that pollen competition may frequently occur in this species.  相似文献

Immunocytochemical localization of cross-reactive antigens to Cry j 1, the major allergen of Cryptomeria japonica, in the pollen grains of Cupressus arizonica and Cupressus sempervirens, was conducted using transmission electron microscopy. Mature and activated pollen grains were fixed for immunocytochemistry using conventional and freezing protocols. Sections containing the samples were incubated with anti-Cry j 1 monoclonal antibody (mAb) (KW-S91). Cross-reactive antigens to Cry j 1 were detected in the mature pollen grains of Cupressus arizonica and Cupressus sempervirens, and abundant gold particles were seen in the orbicules and wall, and in the Golgi, nucleus, and inclusions in reserve materials. After 5 min of activation, labelling noticeably decreased. From 15 min to 48 h, the cytoplasm exhibits a new labelling pattern, with gold markers being associated with protein storage vacuoles. The decrease in cross-reactive antigens during the first 5 min of activation could be due to a rapid release of proteins recognized by Cry j 1 mAb during pollen attachment in the pollination droplet. Our results show that the content of allergenic proteins is unstable, displaying variation relative to the progress of germination in Cupressus sempervirens and Cupressus arizonica pollen grains. The ability to do so may be viewed as an adaptive strategy of Cupressaceae pollen grains to maximize their biosynthetic efficiency.  相似文献

Species of Helicteres are pollinated mainly by hummingbirds and bats. Most species pollinated by hummingbirds have a mechanism of depositing pollen on the top of the pollinator's head such as is shown in this work for Helicteres sacarolha. H. brevispira has an unusual mechanism of depositing pollen grains under the tail or on the abdomen of the hummingbirds. The top of the birds’ head may be considered an efficient place to transport pollen grains, because it is plain, easily accessible for deposition and donation of pollen and not easily accessible for grooming, while the tail is movable and inclined. Thus, H. brevispira pollinators may carry or transfer fewer amounts of pollen grains than H. sacarolha pollinators from one flower to another. If a large amount of pollen grains is lost, a higher quantity of flower or pollen has to be produced to guarantee reproductive success. Plants of H. brevispira set higher number of flowers and pollen grains per flower than H. sacarolha and have also higher rates of fruit and flower abortion. Thus, pollination efficiency of H. brevispira may be reached by high pollen and flower production. Flower change mechanism presented in this species may be also involved with the optimization of pollinator feeding and pollination efficiency.  相似文献

Summary Secondary pollen carryover is defined as the process whereby a pollinator receives previously deposited pollen grains when visiting a flower and transfers them into a new (secondary) carryover sequence. The secondary pollen carryover in a system of ants, Formica rufibarbis, visiting Scleranthus perennis (Caryophyllaceae) was studied using fluorescent dyes as pollen analogues. The mean secondary carryover was found to be 1.2 flowers compared with 4.5 flowers for the primary carryover. The number of dye grains deposited per flower visited is lower and the frequency of zero deposition is higher in the secondary carryover sequence than in the primary.  相似文献

Total pollen production per inflorescence was studied in the most important species of the Poaceae family in the city of Córdoba in order to further our knowledge of the partial contribution of each species of this family to the total amount of pollen released into the atmosphere.

The contribution of grasses in a given area was estimated by counting the number of inflorescences in an area of one square meter. Four different representative areas of the city were selected. The number of pollen grains per anther and flowers per inflorescence was also estimated in order to obtain total pollen production per inflorescence.

Pollen production per inflorescence ranged from 14,500 to more than 22,000,000 pollen grains, the amount being clearly higher in the perennial species. Pollen production per square meter was higher in the mountains near the city and lower in areas of abandoned crops.

Only a few species are responsible for the majority of pollen produced. A phenological study is necessary in order to determine the temporal distribution of this pollen production and subsequent shedding.  相似文献

Summary Initial seed set and fruit set were pollen-limited in a Costa Rican population of Passiflora vitifolia, a self-incompatible species with 200–350 ovules per flower. Pollination intensity was measured by counting the number of allogamous pollen grains on stigmas of the large one-day flowers. Hand-pollinations demonstrated that 25–50 pollen grains are required for fruit set, and >450 are needed for maximum seed set, with a pollen:seed ratio of about 1.6:1.0. Hummingbirds (Phaethornis superciliosus) delivered sufficient allogamous pollen for maximum seed set to only 28% of the flowers examined. Naturally pollinated flowers yielded fewer fruits and fewer seeds per fruit than those pollinated by hand. Most pollen transferred by humming-birds was self-incompatible; emasculated flowers yielded higher seed set than flowers with intact anthers. Visitation rates did not provide a good index of effective pollination.There were significant differences in ovule number, maximum seed set, and maximum per cent seed set among individual vines. More than half of an individual's flowers failed to set fruit, whether pollinated by birds or by hand. In this population, maximum reproductive potential may be limited by maternal resources for fruit development, but seed set varies with pollination intensity. Pollen-limited seed set may be a disadvantage of self-incompatibility, especially in species with many-seeded fruits.  相似文献

To test the prediction of sex allocation theory that plants or flowers high in resource status emphasize the female function, we explored the variation in both biomass (the number of pollen grains and ovules) and temporal (male and female durations) sex allocation among and within plants of protandrous Lobelia sessilifolia in relation to plant size and flower position within plants. Among plants, the mean number of pollen grains and ovules per flower of a plant increased with plant size, whereas the mean P/O ratio (number of pollen grains/number of ovules ratio) decreased with plant size. The mean male duration, the mean female duration, and the mean ratio of male duration/flower longevity per flower of a plant were not correlated with plant size. Thus, large plants emphasized female function in terms of biomass sex allocation, which is consistent with the prediction of size-dependent sex allocation theory. The results for temporal sex allocation, however were inconsistent with the theory. Within plants, the mean number of pollen grains and ovules per flower at each position decreased from lower to upper flowers (early to late blooming flowers) and that of the P/O ratio increased from lower to upper flowers. The mean male duration and the mean female duration per flower decreased from lower to upper flowers, whereas the mean ratio of male duration/flower longevity increased from lower to upper flowers. The population sex ratio changed from male-biased to female-biased. Thus, later blooming flowers emphasized the male function in terms of both biomass and temporal sex allocation, consistent with the sex allocation theory, regarding the change in the population sex ratio.  相似文献

The relationship between the number of open flowers and pollen transfer to stigmas was estimated in three insect-pollinated species (Cynoglossum officinale, Echium vulgare and Oenothera erythrocepala) in 1995 and 1996, using fluorescent dye as a pollen analogue. Dye was applied to an equal number of flowers on a small, a medium and a large individual and its pattern of dispersal to stigmas of conspecifics in local populations was observed. In Cynoglossum officinale and in Echium vulgare large individuals tended to receive more visits per flower. In Oenothera erythrocepala no difference in number of visits per flower was found between small and large individuals. Geitonogamous pollination clearly occurred in all species. In Cynoglossum officinale large individuals transferred more pollen per flower within the same plant (geitonogamy) and an equal or a slightly smaller amount between plants, compared to small individuals. As a result total pollen transfer per flower increased in both years with increasing flower number. In Echium vulgare and in Oenothera erythrocepala large individuals transferred more pollen per flower within the plant (pollen discounting), but a significantly lower amount per flower to other individuals in the populations compared to small individuals. For both these species, there is no difference in total pollen transfer between small and large individuals. In general, the male fitness curve, as estimated by pollen transfer, is a decelerating function of flower number. We discuss this in relation to optimal sex-allocation and the pollen donation hypothesis.  相似文献

Cupressus sempervirens L. var. pyramidalis and C. sempervirens var. horizontalis were examined for their pollen morphometry and ultrastructure to verify whether, in addition to phenotype, pollen could also show characteristics useful to discriminate the two infraspecific taxa. C. sempervirens var. pyramidalis compared to C. sempervirens var. horizontalis has mainly larger, subcircular pollen with a higher percentage of apolar and germinating grains, and a wall with thicker intine; the cytoplasm has a greater number of callose-containing vesicles. C. sempervirens var. horizontalis has pollen distributed in five classes of shape. In addition it is smaller and shows a higher percentage of ruptured grains, and a lower percentage of germination in vitro. The cytoplasm contains vesicles rich in callose and also a higher amount of osmophilic bodies. Pollen grains in both varietas contain only one cell at dispersal. The reported differences in pollen morphometry, structure and biology, together with the phenotypic characteristics of the tree, support the validity of two infraspecific taxa.  相似文献

The butterfliesPapilio helenus andP. protenor were shown to feed mainly on the nectar of the glory bower,Clerodendron trichotomum, which was the most abundant nectar plant in summer in the study area. Both the species were found to have a proboscis longer than 24 mm corresponding to the length of the corolla tube ofC. trichotomum. Visits to the flowers by these butterflies were observed more frequently than visits by sphingid moths which had previously been believed to be the major pollinators ofC. trichotomum. The male butterflies visited trees ofC. trichotomum frequently, while visits by the females were less frequent. However, once females had visited the tree ofC. trichotomum, they remained there longer than the males. Since the flower ofC. trichotomum has long protruding sexual organs, its pollen grains were found to adhere efficiently to the bodies of butterflies, mainly the thorax, during nectar feeding. Most of the butterflies became loaded withC. trichotomum pollen, and the mean number of pollen grains per butterfly was 1,776 forP. helenus and 2,817 forP. protenor. The flowers opened at any time of day but more frequently in the morning. The nectar was secreted throughout the day. In the maturation of the protandrous flower ofC. trichotomum, the duration of the pistillate phase was about twice as long as the staminate phase. The long flowering period and the short duration of the staminate phase resulted in asynchrony of the flowering stages even within a single cyme on a tree. Such asynchrony and the abundance of attractive flowers on a tree facilitates efficient pollination by the butterflies.  相似文献

Summary Flower and fruit characters were measured in ten female, five male and five fruiting male selections of A. deliciosa var deliciosa (A. Chev) Liang and Ferguson. Flowers from female vines had functional pistils, which contained many ovules. Stamens appeared to be fully developed but produced only empty pollen grains. Flowers from male vines had functional stamens that produced high percentages of pollen grains with stainable cytoplasmic contents. Pistils did not contain ovules and were generally small with vestigial styles. Fruiting male vines had both staminate and bisexual flowers. Staminate flowers were similar to those found on strictly male vines. Bisexual flowers produced ovules and stainable pollen. Pistils were smaller than in pistillate flowers. Although the three flower sexes differed in style length, ovary dimensions and ovules per carpel, staminate and bisexual flowers were similar in number of flowers per inflorescence, stamen filament length, pollen stainability, inflorescence rachis length and carpel number, and differed from pistillate flowers in these characters. The three flower sexes had similar sepal and petal numbers. The fruit of fruiting males were considerably smaller than those of females. Low ovule number appears to be the major factor limiting fruit size in the fruiting males studied. Prospects for developing hermaphroditic kiwifruit cultivars through breeding are discussed.  相似文献

Size and DNA content of pollen of Cupressus dupreziana A. Camus, a highly endangered Mediterranean conifer, were assessed by cytomorphological observations and flow cytometric analyses and then compared to C. sempervirens L. pollen. Mature C. dupreziana pollen was composed of two uninucleated types of pollen grains differing in size. Around 35% of the grains exhibited a size similar to C. sempervirens pollen, while 65% exhibited a larger diameter. However only one peak of fluorescence was detected by flow cytometry. DNA content of C. dupreziana pollen was twice the DNA content of C. sempervirens pollen. Comparison of DNA contents of mature and germinating pollen revealed that mature pollen of both species were arrested in the G2 phase. Comparison with the DNA content of somatic tissue (2C) provided evidence for the production of unreduced pollen in C. dupreziana.   • 1 Carpenter bees (Xylocopa californica arizonensis) in west Texas, U.S.A., gather pollen and ‘rob’ nectar from flowers of ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens). When common, carpenter bees are an effective pollen vector for ocotillo. We examined ocotillo's importance as a food source for carpenter bees.
  • 2 The visitation rate of carpenter bees to ocotillo flowers in 1988 averaged 0.51 visits/flower/h and was 4 times greater than that of queen bumble bees (Bombus pennsylvanicus sonorus), the next most common visitor. Nectar was harvested thoroughly and pollen was removed from the majority of flowers. Hummingbird visits were rare.
  • 3 Pollen grains from larval food provisions were identified from sixteen carpenter bee nests. On average, 53% of pollen grains sampled were ocotillo, 39% were mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa), and 8% were Zygophyllaceae (Larrea tridentata or Guaiacum angustifolium). Carpenter bee brood size averaged 5.8 per nest.
  • 4 We measured the number of flowers, and production of pollen and nectar per flower by mature ocotillo plants, as well as the quantity of pollen and sugar in larval provisions. An average plant produced enough pollen and nectar sugar to support the growth of eight to thirteen bee larvae. Ocotillo thus has the potential to contribute significantly to population growth of one of its key pollinators.
  • 5 Although this carpenter bee species, like others, is a nectar parasite of many plant species, it appears to be engaged in a strong mutualism with a plant that serves as both a pollen and as a nectar source during carpenter bee breeding periods.

Total pollen production per inflorescence and per square meter were studied in anemophilous species of the Poaceae family, to determine the relative contribution of each species to the total load of pollen released and to identify the species with the highest potential pollen emission. This was done by calculating the number of pollen grains per flower and per inflorescence and by estimating the density of inflorescences in an area of one square meter. Pollen production per inflorescence varied between 12,000 and 15 million grains, often being higher in the perennial species. Mountainous, grassland, riverside, and littoral areas contributed similarly to the amount of pollen grain production per square meter. Species such as Gaudinia fragilis, Hordeum murinum, Lolium rigidum, and Trisetaria panicea, with high pollen records, were found in all the studied areas. Aerobiological analysis will be undertaken to determine the main pollen season of Poaceae species. The results obtained are of great importance for respiratory health management in this region.  相似文献

Mucuna macrocarpa is a plant found in tropical and subtropical regions that requires an “explosive opening.” Explosive opening is the process that exposes the stamen and pistil from the opening of the carina. This process is needed for cross pollination; however, the plant cannot open itself and opening by an animal is needed. The most common opener of Mucuna flowers is several nectar‐eating bats (e.g., Syconycteris), but the flying fox, Pteropus dasymallus, is the only opener of M. macrocarpa on the subtropical island of Okinawajima. Here, we present the explosive openers and possible pollinators in the northernmost and temperate Kamae region, Kyushu, Japan, where nectar‐eating bats are absent. The Japanese macaque, Macaca fuscata, and the Japanese marten, Martes melampus, were the explosive openers observed during our survey in Kamae. Martens opened flowers using their snout in a manner similar to that of the flying fox, whereas macaques opened flowers using their hands. This is the first time that an animal has been observed opening these flowers with its hands rather than snout. In total, 97% (n = 283) of explosively opened flowers were opened by macaques, and the macaque largely contributed to the overall flower opening. Because many pollen grains become attached to the explosive openers, they are considered to be primary pollinators. Furthermore, two bee species, Apis cerana japonica and Bombus ardens ardens, also visited opened flowers and collected pollen, and they were possibly secondary pollinators.  相似文献
