The pollen morphology of 38 representative species and varieties within the genus Coffea L. is described. Eight pollen types, placed in two major groups, have been identified on the basis of the number of colpi, colpus characteristics, exine morphology and pollen size. Differences in pollen structures of the species studied do not correspond to present taxonomic groupings, but support a current proposal to place some of the species in the genus Paracoffea Leroy. Among the four sections in the genus, the section Eucoffea contains a high degree of pollen polymorphism.  相似文献

Scutellaria L. in Lamiaceae subfamily Scutellarioideae is a subcosmopolitan genus with about 360 species. According to the latest subgeneric classification, two subgenera are recognized: S. subgen. Scutellaria and S. subgen. Apeltanthus. We studied pollen grains from 29 species of Scutellaria belonging to both subgenera and from both the Old and the New World to evaluate their taxonomic importance for the infrageneric classification of the genus. Pollen grains were acetolysed and studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and light microscope (LM). All examined pollen grains are isopolar, tricolpate, suboblate, oblate spheroidal, prolate spheroidal to subprolate. The exine is mainly bireticulate perforate, but with variations in lumina shape and size as well as perforation size and uniformity. Based on the exine sculpturing, two subtypes are recognized within the bireticulate pollen type. In subtype I the primary reticulum of the exine consists of angular muri; the lumen has an irregular polygonal shape and the perforations of the secondary reticulum are more or less uniform and of the same size. This pollen subtype was observed in species of subgenus Scutellaria, sectt. Scutellaria p.p., Anaspis, Perilomia and Salazaria. In subtype II the primary reticulum of the exine consists of a more or less curved murus; the lumen is rounded or obtusely angular and the secondary reticulum consists of one or more large central perforations surrounded by some smaller ones. This pollen subtype was observed in species of subgenus Scutellaria sectt. Scutellaria p.p., Salviifoliae and in all members of subgenus Apeltanthus. The results of this study reveal that the exine ornamentation is a diagnostic character useful for the infrageneric classification of Scutellaria.  相似文献

Pollen of 72 species from 7 genera of the Asphodelaceae was studied by means of LM and SEM in order to investigate their taxonomic relationships. The pollen of all the genera investigated is heteropolar, monosulcate, non-operculate and differs in size, form and exine ornamentation. The species of Eremurus are homogenous palynologically and studies of this genus do not support the segregation of the genera Henningia, Selonia, and Ammolirion. The pollen of Bulbinopsis mainly differs from the pollen of Bulbine species in having a perforate-areolate exine surface (B. bulbosa) but the genera are close in their other palynological features. The genera Asphodelus and Asphodeline have the largest, almost spheroidal grains with the thickest exine but differ in details of exine ornamentation. The species of Kniphofia are very close palynologically.  相似文献

The pollen morphology of the 16 recognized species of the genus Asphodelus L. (Asphodelaceae) has been investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. Four pollen types can be distinguished on the basis of variation in size of the polar, equatorial longitudinal and transverse axes, as well as in exine structure and sculpturing, which correlate with the subdivision of the genus into sections. Correlations between pollen size and some biological characters are made. Phylogenetic implications are suggested, and trends of pollen evolution in the genus are indicated.  相似文献

Pollen grains of 26 species of the genus Gagea distributed in Iran were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. Detailed pollen morphological characteristics are given for these species. Among the studied species, the newly described G. iranica together with G. olgae and G. graminifolia possess the smallest pollen grains, and the widely distributed G. lutea the largest ones. Our studies show that the sculpturing of exine provides valuable characters for separating the species, sometimes even for closely related ones, and delimitation of natural groups within the genus. The exine of the genus Gagea is in most cases perforated upon tectum or rarely tectate-columellate. The muri are solid or structured, compound, simpli-, dupli- or pluricolumellate. It seems that the structure of muri is very important in recognizing natural groups within the genus. Tectal perforations vary from <0.2 to 2.0 μm in diameter among the studied species. Regarding sculpturing of the exine in proximal face, four basic types of pollen grains can be distinguished: reticulate, microreticulate, foveolate and perforate. Within the reticulate type there is sufficient variation in exine structure at distal face to describe three subtypes: reticulate, microreticulate and perforate. A diagnostic key is given for all studied taxa based on palynomorphological characters. For a limited number of populations of selected Iranian species of Gagea, further aspects of pollen biology were studied. It seems that populations with ploidy levels other than diploidy, show a low percentage of pollen fertility. Moreover, the rate of pollen fertility is correlated with the manner of the reproduction in certain species.  相似文献

A survey of pollen from 153 species of Cuphea has revealed a remarkable array of morphological forms. The survey involved light and electron microscope investigations of C. crassiflora, jorullensis, and koehneana to determine details of exine morphology, and a more general study of pollen from an additional 150 species. Comparison of pollen types within a single morphological category and within taxonomic groups (i.e., sections or subsections) indicates considerable variation at subgeneric levels. The genus is distinctly eurypalynous, and the extent to which pollen varies among the sections, subsections, species and varieties is probably exceeded by few genera of comparable size. The pollen is also variable within each taxon, but size studies of single-anther lactic acid preparations demonstrate the genus is not polymorphic, as in Lythrum, where pollen polymorphism is associated with heterostyly. The latter phenomenon is as yet unknown in Cuphea. These results reveal that pollen morphology constitutes an important and useful character for taxonomic studies of Cuphea.  相似文献

Scanning and transmission electron microscopy of pollen grains of 29 species, representing the ten extant genera of Cycadales, has provided valuable insight into their relationships. Pollen grains of these taxa are boat-shaped, monosulcate, and bilaterally symmetrical. They range from narrowly to widely elliptical or subcircular when viewed distally, and have an exine surface of psilate, foveolate, or fossulate. Pollen wall ultrastructure of Cycadales is typically tectate with alveolate∗∗∗spongy exine. The nexine is laminated in all genera. Nexine 1 (footlayer) is present in most species as a thin and often discontinuous layer. There is consistent variation in thickness of the sporoderm layers among the genera but relative uniformity within them. Pollen characteristics are well correlated with macro- and micromorphological features, chromosome numbers, geographical distribution, and postulated pollination mode. A close affinity between Encephalartos, Lepidozamia, and Macrozamia is recognized. Pollen characteristics of the genus Bowenia show some similarity with those of the latter group. Except for two species of Macrozamia which are narrowly elliptic, all of the genera have widely elliptic pollen and share a psilate exine surface and the thinnest sexine with nearly identical arrangement of alveoli. Pollen grains of the species in the genus Dioon exhibit a unique morphology but are more similar to Stangeria than they are to those of taxa in Zamiaceae. The circular outline of the grains and the foveolate exine surface are characters shared by these two genera, but several morphological features distinguish Dioon from Stangeria. Ceratozamia and Zamia share a widely elliptic shape, foveolate exine surface and nearly identical sexine, as well as morphological features and chromosome numbers. They differ from Microcycas in sexine thickness, gross morphology and chromosome numbers. The pollen grains of Cycas circinalis and C. revoluta differ in size and structure of the sexine from all other genera and from each other, substantiating their distinct subgeneric delimitations.  相似文献

Pollen of seven species in Tetraplasandra and three species in related genera were studied with light and scanning electron microscopes. A new thin-section technique was employed for the study of exine stratification and apertural structure. This study reveals several previously undescribed pollen structures for the group. Trends toward increase in pollen size and in specialization of other pollen characters are evident in Tetraplasandra. Pollen of Reynoldsia and Peekeliopanax differs from Tetraplasandra in the pertectate sexine and the absence of inner nexinous breaks, respectively. A pollen correlation study shows that Munroidendron falls readily within the genus Tetraplasandra but is distinguishable from the latter by its bifurcate colpi.  相似文献

Light and first SEM observations on the pollen ofAegialitis indicate that the two species of the genus are clearly distinguishable from all other genera of the tribeStaticeae to whichAegialitis presently is relegated. Intraspecific exine or aperture dimorphism which appears frequently in this tribe, is not recorded in this genus.A. annulata andA. rotundifolia have distinct monomorphic pollen and show a great resemblance in exine features with the tribePlumbagineae, particularly species ofPlumbago. Considering these and other features, separate subtribal status forAegialitis within thePlumbagineae is proposed.

The pollen morphology and tapetal membranes of 17 species of Trillium from North America have been examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The pollen grains of the genus are consistently spherical and inaperturate. The exine is unstratified and ultra-thin. Five types of exine structure are recognized, namely, echinate-, corrugate-, granulate-, verrucate- and spinulate-type, based on the variations in the components of the exine. The granulate-type is the most common and is divided into six subtypes. The features of tapetal membranes also vary in relation with the variation of the exine structures. This study demonstrates the potential of palynological evidence in assessment of taxonomic relationships within the genus.  相似文献

Fossil angiospermous stamens with in situ pollen from the Turonian (ca. 90 million years before present, Late Cretaceous) of New Jersey are described and assigned to the Chloranthaceae. The fossil stamens, which are three-parted and bear two bisporangiate thecae on the central lobe and one bisporangiate theca on each lateral lobe, are indistinguishable from stamens of several extant species of Chloranthus. The pollen is spheroidal, 13–18 μm in diameter, with a reticulate exine and apparently elongate/elliptical apertures. The pollen is similar to that in extant Chloranthus in grain size, shape, exine sculpture, and aperture structure. Like pollen of some extant species of Chloranthus, aperture number in the fossil pollen appears to be variable. Because fossil pistillate chloranthoid reproductive structures have not been found at this locality it is unknown whether the fossil stamens described here were borne on the side of the ovary, as in extant Chloranthus, or in another arrangement. The three-parted stamen of Chloranthus is unique in angiosperms and there has been considerable debate concerning the origin and evolutionary significance of the structure. Uncertainty as to whether the three-parted stamen represents a synapomorphy for the genus or a retained plesiomorphy in angiosperms is the primary reason why these fossil stamens are not assigned to the extant genus Chloranthus.  相似文献

The pollen grain of Hymenocallis quitoensis Herb, is examined with scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The very large, monosulcate grain is characterized by a coarsely reticulate exine surface and solid, auriculate appendages at the equatorial facies. Surface morphology of the pollen grain of H. quitoensis is compared with other representative species of Hymenocallis and supports the inclusion of H. quitoensis within the genus. Meridional exine dimorphism in other species of Hymenocallis is interpreted as a reduction from the well-defined auriculae of H. quitoensis. Surface morphology of the pollen grain of Hymenocallis sects. Artema Traub and Elisena (Herb.) Traub exhibits divergence from that of sects. Hymenocallis and Ismene (Herb.) Traub. Phylogenetic and paleobotanical implications of the auriculate pollen grain are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Astragalus is with nearly 3000 described species the largest genus of flowering plants. So far analyses of pollen characters have only been conducted for a few species of the groups within the genus. Here we analyse pollen grains of 22 species representative for Astragalus section Hymenostegis using scanning electron microscopy. We found the basic shape of the pollen grains to be oblate-spheroidal and apertures to be tricolpate as for other eudicots. The sculpturing pattern of the exine is micro-reticulate. Pollen grains show low morphological variation among different species of this section, but differences occur between sections of the genus. We conclude that the vast morphological differentiation that occurred during the rapid radiation of section Hymenostegis was not accompanied by comparable differentiation in pollen morphology.  相似文献

Pollen of 20 species of Rondeletia, covering three subgenera and seven sections or “species groups” of the genus, was studied using light and scanning microscopy. Rondeletia, characterized by binucleate mature pollen grains like numerous other Rubiaceae, was found to be eurypalynous. The pollen is isopolar and small-sized (average equatorial diameters 11.4–22.8 μm) and 3-colporate (rarely 4-colporate). In equatorial view, the pollen grains are mostly ± spheroidal (rarely suboblate); in polar view (ambitus), they are mainly circular or semiangular (intersemiangular in one species only). Three different exine types are distinguishable: exine with 1) tectum minutely perforate, perforations usually isodiametric, 2) tectum with comparatively large, not isodiametric perforations or 3) coarsely reticulate; supratectal sculpturing elements are lacking; the width of the perforations and lumina is either equal or different at the apo- and mesocolpia; in a few species rod-like luminal processes are present. Palynological features of most of the investigated taxa tend to overlap so that palynology is not very helpful in supporting the subgeneric division of Rondeletia. It was, however, noted that pollen morphology, to some extent, supports the sections of subgen. Arachnothrix. Palynologically, the subgen. Rogiera was found to be heterogeneous in that each of the three investigated species is characterized by a different exine type; one of these, R. strigosa, differs from all other Rondeletia species investigated in having a coarsely reticulate exine. R. odorata (subgen. Rondeletia) differs from all other investigated species in its intersemiangular pollen shape.  相似文献

The pollen morphology of two Bienertia species and 28 Suaeda species from the Old World has been studied with light and scanning electron microscopy. Pollen morphological characters used in this study include pollen diameter, pore number, pore diameter, operculum diameter, chord distance, exine thickness, plus number and characteristics of exine spinules and operculum spinules. Using these characters, the pollen of Bienertia is clearly distinguished from that of Suaeda. In addition, pollen data support recent molecular studies which merge the genus Borszczowia into Suaeda. The pollen grains of Suaeda show notable variation; in some cases this allows morphological distinctions to be made between species. Taxonomically, pore number is observed to be a more useful character than pollen diameter. Principal components analysis (PCA) shows only a weak correlation between pollen characters and habit (life form), habitat, mode of photosynthesis or phylogenetic relationships. Interestingly, however, the annual C3 and C4 species of section Schoberia are usually characterised by a higher pore number than the perennial C4 species.  相似文献

The pollen–ovule ratio (P/O) is commonly used to estimate the mode of sexual reproduction in flowering plants. In previous studies, a clear correspondence has been detected between this character and the degree of autogamy. We here investigate variation in this character and its expected correlates in the genus Veronica (Plantaginaceae). Pollen–ovule ratios of 45 species representing eleven percent of all the species in the genus were investigated and compared with results from crossing experiments from previous studies. In addition, multiple populations of 17 of the 45 studied species were sampled and a controlled‐environment experiment was conducted to evaluate the extent of intraspecific variation. Moreover, relationships between P/O and other primary and secondary reproductive characters of the Veronica flower were investigated in relation to a phylogenetic hypothesis in order to determine the phylogenetic constraints on reproductive characters. The differences in P/O among species correspond well to the diversity of mating systems in Veronica and correlate well with other floral characters such as corolla size. These characters together seem to allow a powerful and fast tool to infer mating systems. However, causes for intraspecific variation of P/O, such as different cytotypes, ecotypes or different growth conditions, need to be considered.  相似文献

Floral diversification in the genus Pedicularis (Orobanchaceae) is remarkable among flowering plants. In this genus, floral morphology and pollinator behavior are closely co-adaptive. In the current paper, pollen grains of 23 representative species of Pedicularis mainly from North America, with two species from Japan and two species from China, whose pollination ecology was previously studied, were examined using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Two pollen aperture types and three kinds of exine ornamentation were recognized among these species. In addition, pollen data from previous and the current studies of Pedicularis were integrated and analyzed, together with some pollination characters. There was a significant association between pollen aperture types and corolla types, as well as between pollination syndromes and corolla types. However, there was no association of exine ornamentations with corolla types. The relationships and evolution of this genus were discussed with regards to pollen morphology, corolla types and pollination syndromes.  相似文献

Abstract

In Euphorbiaceae tribe Hippomaneae is the pantropical genus Microstachys, comprised by 24 species, mostly from Brazil. Palynological studies with several representatives of the genus are scarce. The purpose of this study was to describe the pollen morphology of Microstachys and find possible differentiating characteristics between its species. Ten species of the genus were analysed, represented by 21 herbarium collections. Their pollen grains were acetolysed, measured and photographed under light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The analysed species possess pollen in monads, of small to medium size, isopolars, amb distincticly trilobed, oblate-spheroidal, prolate-spheroidal or subprolate, tricolporate with narrow and very long colpi, almost fused at the poles sometimes forming an invagination with tapering ends and margo of the colporus wide to very wide and psilate; endoapertures lalongate to very lalongate with tapering ends, presence of a narrow costae distinct in the endoaperture; exine microreticulate homobrochate, walls with simple columella; at the mesocolpus the sexine separates from the nexine forming cavea; and sexine always thicker than the nexine. Microstachys is a stenopalynous genus, despite its species varying in pollen size, shape and width of the cavea, margo of the colporus, and length of the endoapertures, demonstrating taxonomic value, and indicating a contribution towards future systematic analyses.  相似文献

Pollen morphology was examined in 40 samples from 19 species in the genus Erythronium (Liliaceae) using scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Pollen grains are monosulcate monads, except for a plant of E. oregonum which has dyad grains. North American and European species are characterized by reticulate exine sculpture composed of various degrees of wavy muri and variably-sized lumina. The most distinctive feature of exine sculpture in the genus is exhibited by the Asian species E. japonicum, which has a unique reticulate pattern composed of striate muri and a distinctive exine structure without columellae. The distinctness of E. japonicum pollen suggests that it has specialized in isolation from species in North America and Europe.  相似文献
