Atlantic salmon Salmo salar are often heavily infected by the gill maggot Salmincola salmoneus, but little information exists on the population dynamics of this parasite. Through a combination of in vivo field examination and laboratory analysis of gills from the Alta River S. salar population in northern Norway, we describe the population dynamics of the parasite and suggest a model for the host-parasite interactions. S. salar did not become infected with S. salmoneus until they returned to the river as first-time spawners. The infection increased rapidly until autumn, and just after spawning 96% of the spent fish (kelts) were infected with a mean intensity of 53 parasites per fish. In May, the prevalence of S. salmoneus on the descending kelts had increased to 100%, but the intensity exhibited little change. A small proportion of the adult S. salar population returned as immature to the river during autumn and had lower parasite intensities than the kelts the following spring. When the fish that had spawned previously (repeat spawners) returned from their second (or more) sea migration, they had an average infection rate of 36 S. salmoneus individuals per fish. The kelts seemed to be the main habitat for the parasite during winter and spring, and they stay long enough in the river to pass the infection to maiden S. salar that enter the river early in summer. These fish then became a source of infection for the maiden fish entering the river later. However, in years that have a possible mismatch between the opposite migration of kelts and maiden S. salar, the immature fall-running and returning repeat spawners will be crucial for maintaining the parasite population. We hypothesize that heavily infected S. salar may suffer reduced growth and survival at sea, potentially reducing the abundance of repeat spawners.  相似文献

Discriminant function analysis was used to distinguish morphologically between samples of parr, smolts and adult Atlantic salmon Salmo salar from several hatchery and river systems in Ireland. The effect of habitat shift was investigated in Atlantic salmon parr. Parr grown from the eyed‐egg stage with a non‐sibling group in a hatchery environment, came to resemble the mean body shape of their host hatchery Atlantic salmon stock more closely than that of a full sibling group grown at their natal hatchery. Wild Atlantic salmon smolts differed in shape from hatchery‐reared smolts. This difference was less pronounced, but still statistically significant when wild adults were compared with hatchery‐reared adults captured in the coastal drift‐net fishery after a year spent at sea. Rearing conditions had a significant impact on the production and growth of fish body shape. This in turn may have affected adaptability and survivorship of ranched Atlantic salmon in the marine environment.  相似文献

A comparative study of digestion in North Atlantic seabirds   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We present data on digestive efficiencies and gut retention times of eight North Atlantic seabird species, fed on two fish species – lesser sandeel Ammodytes marinus and whiting Merlangius merlangus – which commonly occur in the diet of wild seabirds. In an interspecific comparison, there was a positive relationship between retention time and digestive efficiency, which we suggest represents a trade-off between conflicting benefits of efficient digestion and rapid digestion. Analysis of excretion curves revealed that retention time of digesta in the stomach was more important than passage time of digesta through the intestine in determining whole gut retention time. Differences in stomach retention time of lesser sandeel and whiting explained the longer overall retention time of the latter diet. Stomach retention time and whole gut retention time were greater in species with relatively large stomachs, while intestine passage time was correlated with relative intestine length. Species which typically eat a wide range of food types, including low quality items, tended to have slow and efficient digestion and heavy stomachs, whereas species which specialise on readily digestible and energy dense food types had the opposite digestion strategy.  相似文献

The strategy of releasing captive reared adult Atlantic salmon Salmo salar into the Magaguadavic River, New Brunswick, Canada, to spawn, was not an effective tool for rebuilding a seriously depressed wild population. The fish were first generation progeny from wild parents, and had spent their entire lives in captivity in either sea or fresh water. No differences in movement or behaviour patterns were observed between freshwater and seawater reared groups. Fish released in the lower river early (35 to 80 days prior to the natural spawning period) moved into a lake low in the system, and most stayed there near the commercial hatchery where they had been reared from egg to smolt. During the spawning season, none moved to the upper river reaches where most spawning habitat exists. Most broodstock released in the upper river reaches near the time of spawning stayed there during the spawning period. The following year few to no Atlantic salmon fry were found, and most appeared not to be offspring of released adults.  相似文献

A telemetry study in a Norwegian regulated river was conducted through a 12-day period in mid-winter 2003. The objective was to study activity (defined as number of movement per hour) and movement (defined as distance moved per hour) during different ice formation events. Twenty-four Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) parr were radio tagged and continuously monitored by both manually tracking (N = 24) and by fixed recording stations (N = 15). Detailed data on climate, flow and ice formation and its spatial distribution were collected and used in the analyses. Fish activity was not found to be affected by their size (L F). There was a significant difference in activity between diel periods with highest activity during dusk (5–6 p.m.). Between high and low flow (mean ± SD, 21.1 m3 s−1 ± 1.7 SD and 11.1 m3 s−1 ± 1.7 SD, respectively) no significant difference in activity was found. During the experiment extensive anchor ice growth occurred mainly in the riffle part with thickness up to 50 cm. Juveniles tend to avoid riffle section during anchor ice formation and exploited ice covered areas, indicating critical and preferable habitats respectively. Further, a significant difference in movement was found between five selected ice events with highest mean movement during an anchor ice event and lowest mean movement during an ice break up with no anchor ice formation. No significant difference in activity or movement between parr exposed to frazil ice and parr not exposed were found.  相似文献

Two methods, visual observation from the river bank and visual observation underwater by diving, were compared for microhabitat studies in young brown trout and Atlantic salmon in a stream. A wide range of habitat conditions were surveyed. Each method yielded different results with respect to microhabitat use. River bank observations missed small fish under surface turbulence and in deeper waters. Underwater observations missed small fish in shallow areas.  相似文献

Survival rate and growth parameters of Atlantic salmon fry and sea trout fry were determined after stocking in the wild. Before release (22 May 2009) into the wild the larvae were reared for 10 weeks in the hatchery in three groups: (i) fry fed on live zooplankton , (ii) fry fed on larvae of live nekton, and (iii) fry fed on prepared pellet food. In autumn (15 September 2010) the fish were caught in the wild; the survival rate and growth parameters of both Atlantic salmon and sea trout were the highest in the zooplankton‐fed group, whilst the pellet‐fed group had the lowest survival rate and growth value parameters. Most effective food for hatchery‐reared fishes to be used as stock was the natural living zooplankton. The general conclusion is that the live diet supplied in the rearing period has a positively impact on fish survival in the wild.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon 1+ pre-smolts were exercised under low (LE) or moderate (ME) water current velocities prior to release. The flow regimes had a minor effect on freshwater growth and did not affect total Carlin-tag recaptures significantly, but the LE adults strayed more frequently and the ME salmon homed more successfully to the release site.  相似文献

The effect of varying the density of hatchery‐reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar on the ability of single wild fish to occupy a shelter is assessed. Although there was strong density‐dependence on sheltering overall, the ability of wild Atlantic salmon parr to occupy a shelter was not affected by the presence of hatchery‐reared fish even when outnumbered by four to one. These findings illustrate a competitive asymmetry for shelter in favour of the wild fish at the densities tested.  相似文献

The dispersal and migration of farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar , allowed to escape during the summer was studied. Three groups of 4–year–old fish of the River Imsa stock were released in coastal waters off south-western Norway: one group, with functional olfactory organs, was released at a fish farm 4 km away from the R. Imsa; two other groups, one with transected olfactory nerves and the other with functional olfactory organs, were released in the sea 90 km from the R. Imsa. To compare them with the migration pattern of reared, large smolts of the Imsa stock, a group of 3 + smolts was released in the R. Imsa.
Adults of salmon released as 3–year–old smolts homed with high precision to the R. Imsa. Four– year–olds released in the sea were recaptured in the fjord and in the coastal current, the majority north of the places of release. Immatures migrated to feeding areas in the North Atlantic. Matures seemed to enter rivers at random when ready to spawn. There was no difference in migration pattern between anosmics and controls. The olfactory sense was not mandatory for entering fresh water. The results indicate that the homing behaviour of Atlantic salmon is not a direct consequence of a single imprinting of the smolts, and that there is not a direct genetic link for return to a particular river. The present results support the sequential imprinting hypothesis proposed by Harden Jones (1968).  相似文献

Atlantic salmon salmo salar L. parr were reared for 3 months under standard hatchery conditions or in a structurally enriched tank (containing plants, rocks and novel objects). Half of each of these fish had prior exposure to live prey in the form of live bloodworm while the other half were fed hatchery‐pellets. After 12 days all fish were tested on a novel live prey item (brine shrimp). A significant interaction between the two factors (prior exposure to live prey and rearing condition) revealed that foraging performance was only enhanced in fish that had been reared in a complex environment and exposed to live prey. It appears that the ability to generalize from one live prey type to another is only enhanced in fish that had been reared in an enriched environment. The findings support the assertion that the provision of enriched environments in combination with exposure to live prey prior to release may significantly improve the post‐release survival rates of hatchery‐reared fishes. As both the environmental enrichment and the prior foraging experience procedures were comparatively simple, the provision of such pre‐release experiences are likely to prove cost effective to hatcheries.  相似文献

In 1982 and 1983 descending wild Atlantic salmon smolts, Salmo salar L., were caught in a fish-trap at the mouth of the River Imsa. Together with hatchery-reared smolts of the River Imsa strain they were tagged and released at three different sites of the Imsa-Lutsi watercourse: in the Imsa River 1 km above the trap, and in two lakes, 3 and 11 km upstream of the trap. The recapture-rate in the fish-trap decreased with increased migration distance. The hatchery-reared smolts migrated downstream faster than wild smolts. Lake-released smolts were considerably delayed in their downstream migration compared to the river released smolts. The results are discussed in relation to environmental and physiological parameters.  相似文献

Juvenile salmon in their first year of growth showed a bimodal distribution of body lengths by December. For experimental purposes samples of fish from the upper 2% of body lengths were taken as representing the upper modal group (UMG), whilst fish from the bottom 5% of body lengths were taken to represent the lower modal group (LMG). The population of fish from which the samples were taken were fed ad libitum from December to July. During the winter months to March, neither group increased in weight. Growth resumed between March and July. The LMG fish had a very low food intake, as indicated by the relative weight of digesta in the stomach, in the winter months. However, following resumption of feeding, the relative weight of stomach digesta of the LMG fish exceeded that of the UMG fish between May and July. The activity of trypsin in the intestinal digesta followed a similar pattern, the LMG fish showing a higher trypsin activity in the spring months. Starvation of UMG fish for 5 days in winter resulted in accumulation of trypsin in the pancreatic tissues, whilst injection of the trypsin releasing hormone cholecystokinin (CCK) into starving UMG fish resulted in reduction of trypsin in the secretory tissues. CCK also caused reduction of trypsin in the pancreatic tissues of LMG fish, suggesting that the pancreas of this group is potentially fully functional during the winter period. Ultrastructure studies of the pancreatic acinar cells showed evidence for lower secretory activity in the LMG fish, as indicated by smaller numbers of zymogen granules, less well developed Golgi systems and a smaller number of active secreting cells. It appears that trypsin secretion by the pancreas in LMG fish is at a low level during the winter, in response to the reduced amounts of food passing through the gut, which is ultimately controlled by changes in food intake, lowered metabolic level and lowered appetite levels.  相似文献

The 26 specimens of the landlocked Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. from Namsen river and its tributary Melingselva river (central Norway) were studied by the method of complete parasitological examination in the period of 1997-1998. The 15 parasite species have been recovered. Ration of parasite with a direct and complex cycle is approximately equal, 6 and 9 respectively. Larval stages of parasites predominate among the parasites with a complex cycle. The parasite fauna fond in the landlocked Atlantic salmon is most similar to that in youngsters of the lake salmon (Salmo salar morpha sebago Girard) and the migrating Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.).  相似文献

One‐year‐old and 1‐summer‐old salmon parr have been stocked in the Simojoki, a northern Baltic river, to protect the natural salmon stock from extinction. This enhancement practice was studied during a 5‐year stocking period, when an average of 14.3 1‐summer‐old parr and 5.4 1‐year‐old parr was needed to produce one sea running smolt. The mean yield from stocking was 70 smolts per 1000 stocked 1‐summer‐old parr and 186 smolts per 1000 stocked 1‐year‐old parr. The mean cost of smolts produced by stocking 1‐year‐old and 1‐summer‐old parr was 1.2 and 2.6 times the cost of producing one 50 g smolt in the hatchery, respectively. There was a negative relationship between density of wild parr and length of smolts stocked as 1‐summer‐old parr in the river, but no relationship between wild parr density and length of smolts stocked as 1‐year‐old parr. This indicated that 1‐summer‐old parr were more susceptible than the older parr to competition with wild parr. Considering production costs and smolt yield, stocking of 1‐year‐old parr appeared to be more profitable than that of 1‐summer‐old parr in the enhancement of the endangered salmon stock.  相似文献

Single cell suspensions were derived from the gills of dab Limanda limanda and Atlantic salmon Salmo salar which were free from blood cell contamination. Gills were perfused with heparinized saline before the cells were liberated from their resident position using a procedure employing chelating agents and collagenase digestion. Cells were characterized using light and electron microscopy as well as histochemical staining. The results indicate that the cell types resident in the gill tissue should be capable of expressing local immune competence. Small and large lymphocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, eosinophilic granule cells, goblet cells, chloride cells and cells of unusual morphology were identified especially the presence of goblet cells apparently within epithelial-like cells.  相似文献

Understanding preferences of animals is of fundamental importance for modelling habitat quality and quantity. Important theoretical developments, for example using ideal free and ideal despotic distributions (IDD), have enabled biologists to build conceptual frameworks for relating habitat preferences of individual animals to distributions and dynamics of populations. At the same time, managers of natural resources have established predictive empirical models as a basis for understanding habitat quality. For example, the Physical Habitat Simulation model (PHABSIM) has been widely applied for managing river flows. The aim of this study was to conduct experiments, using Atlantic salmon parr, to test whether observed population distributions could be predicted using simple behaviour theory and PHABSIM. We show that predictions from PHABSIM depend crucially on population density, discharge and the interaction between density and discharge at the time when the model is parameterized. These findings can, in part, be explained by consideration and application of the IDD. However, the results of the experiments also suggest that models derived from first behavioural principles may need to be unexpectedly complex and species‐specific if they are to capture the population response to variations in water discharge effectively.  相似文献

The timing of river entry in the Atlantic salmon is known to depend on genetic, demographic and environmental factors, but little is known about the relative magnitude of among population and among year variation and covariation in this respect in natural state Atlantic salmon rives. To investigate this, variability in the timing of river entry in three historical Finnish Atlantic salmon populations were analyzed using salmon trap data collected during 1870- 1902. The analyses reveled that 1 ) the timing of river entry differed substantially and consistently among the rivers, and that 2) variation among the rivers was much larger than variation among years. Annual variations were not explained by regional environmental conditions, whereas in one river the timing of the local flood peak was a significant predictor of the timing of river entry. Differences in the timing of salmon entry to geographically closely situated rivers suggests that a regionally fixed opening date for coastal fisheries might not be the best management strategy as it may lead to uneven exploitation of salmon populations from different rivers [ Current Zoology 55 (5) : 342 - 349, 2009] .  相似文献
