Eucalyptus pauciflora Sieber ex Sprengel. (snow gum) was grown under ambient (370  µ L L−1) and elevated (700  µ L L−1) atmospheric [CO2] in open-top chambers (OTCs) in the field and temperature-controlled glasshouses. Nitrogen applications to the soil ranged from 0.1 to 2.75 g N per plant. Trees in the field at high N levels grew rapidly during summer, particularly in CO2-enriched atmosphere, but suffered high mortality during summer heatwaves. Generally, wider and more numerous secondary xylem vessels at the root–shoot junction in CO2-enriched trees conferred fourfold higher below-ground hydraulic conductance. Enhanced hydraulic capacity was typical of plants at elevated [CO2] (in which root and shoot growth was accelerated), but did not result from high N supply. However, because high rates of N application consistently made trees prone to dehydration during heatwaves, glasshouse studies were required to identify the effect of N nutrition on root development and hydraulics. While the effects of elevated [CO2] were again predominantly on hydraulic conductivity, N nutrition acted specifically by constraining deep root penetration into soil. Specifically, 15–40% shallower root systems supported marginally larger shoot canopies. Independent changes to hydraulics and root penetration have implications for survival of fertilized trees under elevated atmospheric [CO2], particularly during water stress.  相似文献

Testing whether and how subordinate individuals differ from dominants in the utilization of enriched CO2 atmospheres is important for understanding future stand and community structure. We hypothesized that subordinate and dominant Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. (Asteraceae) (common ragweed) plants growing in dense stands would not equally acquire or utilize carbon gains from CO2-enrichment, and that the resulting disproportionate growth gains to subordinates would reduce size inequalities in competing stands. We grew experimental stands of A. artemisiifolia in either ambient (360 μL L−1) or twice ambient (720 μL L−1) levels of atmospheric CO2. We compared the relative growth, photosynthetic capacity, and architecture of subordinate and dominant plants in each treatment, and assessed size inequalities using the stand-level coefficient of variation (CV). In elevated CO2, plants grew larger, but subordinate plants shifted more mass to upper stem allocation than dominants. Dominant plants demonstrated reduced leaf-level photosynthetic gains in elevated CO2 compared with subordinate plants. Reduced CVs in plant size reflected smaller proportional growth gains by dominants over subordinates in elevated vs. ambient stands. We conclude that differences in the architectural and physiological responses of subordinate and dominant ragweed plants reduce competition and allow subordinate plants to catch up to dominants in elevated CO2 conditions.  相似文献

To investigate if Eucalyptus species have responded to industrial-age climate change, and how they may respond to a future climate, we measured growth and physiology of fast- ( E. saligna ) and slow-growing ( E. sideroxylon ) seedlings exposed to preindustrial (290), current (400) or projected (650 μL L−1) CO2 concentration ([CO2]) and to current or projected (current +4 °C) temperature. To evaluate maximum potential treatment responses, plants were grown with nonlimiting soil moisture. We found that: (1) E. sideroxylon responded more strongly to elevated [CO2] than to elevated temperature, while E. saligna responded similarly to elevated [CO2] and elevated temperature; (2) the transition from preindustrial to current [CO2] did not enhance eucalypt plant growth under ambient temperature, despite enhancing photosynthesis; (3) the transition from current to future [CO2] stimulated both photosynthesis and growth of eucalypts, independent of temperature; and (4) warming enhanced eucalypt growth, independent of future [CO2], despite not affecting photosynthesis. These results suggest large potential carbon sequestration by eucalypts in a future world, and highlight the need to evaluate how future water availability may affect such responses.  相似文献

The increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels is predicted to stimulate plant carbon (C) fixation, potentially influencing the size, structure and function of micro- and mesofaunal communities inhabiting the rhizosphere. To assess the effects of increased atmospheric CO2 on bacterial, fungal and nematode communities in the rhizosphere, Carex arenaria (a nonmycorrhizal plant species) and Festuca rubra (a mycorrhizal plant species) were grown in three dune soils under controlled soil temperature and moisture conditions, while subjecting the aboveground compartment to defined atmospheric conditions differing in CO2 concentrations (350 and 700 μL L−1). Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis methods were used to examine effects on the size and structure of rhizosphere communities. Multivariate analysis of community profiles showed that bacteria were most affected by elevated CO2, and fungi and nematodes to a lesser extent. The influence of elevated CO2 was plant dependent, with the mycorrhizal plant ( F. rubra ) exerting a greater influence on bacterial and fungal communities. Biomarker data indicated that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) may play an important role in the observed soil community responses. Effects of elevated CO2 were also soil dependent, with greater influence observed in the more organic-rich soils, which also supported higher levels of AMF colonization. These results indicate that responses of soil-borne communities to elevated CO2 are different for bacteria, fungi and nematodes and dependent on the plant type and soil nutrient availability.  相似文献

A recognized invasive weed, Canada thistle ( Cirsium arvense L. Scop.) was grown at ambient and pre-ambient concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide [CO2] (373 and 287 μmol mol−1, respectively) at three levels of supplemental nitrogen (N) (3, 6 and 14.5 m M ) from seeding until flowering [77 days after sowing (DAS)]. The primary objective of the study was to determine if N supply limited the potential photosynthetic and growth response of this species to the increase in atmospheric [CO2] which occurred during the 20th century (i.e. approximately 290 to 370 μmol mol−1 CO2). Leaf photosynthesis increased both as a function of growth [CO2] and N supply during the first 46 DAS. Although by 46 DAS photosynthetic acclimation was observed relative to a common measurement CO2 concentration, there was no interaction with N supply. Both [CO2] and N increased biomass, relative growth rates and leaf area whereas root : shoot ratio was increased by CO2 and decreased by increasing N; however, N supply did not effect the relative response to [CO2] for any measured vegetative parameter up to 77 DAS. Due to the relative stimulation of shoot biomass, total above-ground N increased at elevated [CO2] for all levels of supplemental N, but nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) did not differ as a function of [CO2]. Overall, these data suggest that any potential response to increased atmospheric [CO2] in recent decades for this noxious weedy species was probably not limited by nitrogen supply.  相似文献

Pinus banksiana seedlings were grown for 9 months in enclosures in greenhouses at CO2 concentrations of 350 or 750 μmol mol−1 with either low (0.005 to 0. 3 W m−2) or high (0.25 to 0. 90 W m−2) ultraviolet-B (UV-B) irradiances. Total seedling dry weight decreased with high UV treatment but was unaffected by CO2 enrichment. High UV treatment also shifted biomass partitioning in favor of leaf production. Both CO2 and UV treatments decreased the dark respiration rate and light compensation point. High UV light inhibited photosynthesis at 350 but not at 750 μmol mol−1 CO2 due to a UV induced increase in ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase efficiency and ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate regeneration. Stomatal density was increased by high UV irradiance but was unchanged by CO2 enrichment.  相似文献

Oxic–anoxic interfaces harbor significant numbers and activity of chemolithoautotrophic microorganisms, known to oxidize reduced sulfur or nitrogen species. However, measurements of in situ distribution of bulk carbon dioxide (CO2) assimilation rates and active autotrophic microorganisms have challenged the common concept that aerobic and denitrifying sulfur oxidizers are the predominant autotrophs in pelagic oxic–anoxic interfaces. Here, we provide a comparative investigation of nutrient, sulfur, and manganese chemistry, microbial biomass distribution, as well as CO2 fixation at the pelagic redoxcline of the eastern Gotland Basin, Baltic Sea. Opposing gradients of oxygen, nitrate, and sulfide approached the detection limits at the chemocline at 204 m water depth. No overlap of oxygen or nitrate with sulfide was observed, whereas particulate manganese was detected down to 220 m. More than 70% of the bulk dark CO2 assimilation, totaling 9.3 mmol C m−2 day−1, was found in the absence of oxygen, nitrite, and nitrate and could not be stimulated by their addition. Maximum fixation rates of up to 1.1 μmol C L−1 day−1 were surprisingly susceptible to altered redox potential or sulfide concentration. These results suggest that novel redox-sensitive pathways of microbial sulfide oxidation could account for a significant fraction of chemolithoautotrophic growth beneath pelagic chemoclines. A mechanism of coupled activity of sulfur-oxidizing and sulfur-reducing microorganisms is proposed.  相似文献

In situ responses to elevated CO2 in tropical forest understorey plants   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2
1. Plants growing in deep shade and high temperature, such as in the understorey of humid tropical forests, have been predicted to be particularly sensitive to rising atmospheric CO2. We tested this hypothesis in five species whose microhabitat quantum flux density (QFD) was documented as a covariable. After 7 (tree seedlings of Tachigalia versicolor and Beilschmiedia pendula ) and 18 months (shrubs Piper cordulatum and Psychotria limonensis, and grass Pharus latifolius ) of elevated CO2 treatment ( c. 700 μl litre–1) under mean QFD of less than 11 μmol m–2 s–1, all species produced more biomass (25–76%) under elevated CO2.
2. Total plant biomass tended to increase with microhabitat QFD (daytime means varying from 5 to 11μmol m–2 s–1) but the relative stimulation by elevated CO2 was higher at low QFD except in Pharus .
3. Non-structural carbohydrate concentrations in leaves increased significantly in Pharus (+ 27%) and Tachigalia (+ 40%).
4. The data support the hypothesis that tropical plants growing near the photosynthetic light compensation point are responsive to elevated CO2. An improved plant carbon balance in deep shade is likely to influence understorey plant recruitment and competition as atmospheric CO2 continues to rise.  相似文献

The effects of high O3 (200 nl l−1 during the light period) and high CO2 (650 μl l−1 CO2, 24 h a day) alone and in combination were studied on 45-day-old sugar maple ( Acer saccharum Marsh.) seedlings for 61 days in growth chambers. After 2 months of treatment under the environmental conditions of the experiment, sugar maple seedlings did not show a marked response to the elevated CO2 treatment: the effect of high CO2 on biomass was only detected in the leaves which developed during the treatment, and assimilation rate was not increased. Under high O3 at ambient CO2, assimilation rate at days 41 and 55 and Rubisco content at day 61 decreased in the first pair of leaves; total biomass was reduced by 43%. In these seedlings large increases (more than 2-fold) in glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH, EC 1.1.1.49) activity and in anaplerotic CO2 fixation by phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC, EC 4.1.1.31) were observed, suggesting that an enhanced reducing power and carbon skeleton production was needed for detoxification and repair of oxidative damage. Under high O3 at elevated CO2, a stimulation of net CO2 assimilation was observed after 41 days but was no longer observed at day 55. However, at day 61, the total biomass was only reduced by 21% and stimulation of G6PDH and PEPC was less pronounced than under high O3 at ambient CO2. This suggests that high CO2 concentration protects, to some extent, against O3 by providing additional carbon and energy through increased net assimilation.  相似文献

Abstract: The concentration dependency of the impact of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations on Arabidopsis thaliana L. was studied. Plants were exposed to nearly ambient (390), 560, 810, 1240 and 1680 μl I-1 CO2 during the vegetative growth phase for 8 days. Shoot biomass production and dry matter content were increased upon exposure to elevated CO2. Maximal increase in shoot fresh and dry weight was obtained at 560 μl I-1 CU2, which was due to a transient stimulation of the relative growth rate for up to 3 days. The shoot starch content increased with increasing CO2 concentrations up to two-fold at 1680 μl I-1 CO2, whereas the contents of soluble sugars and phenolic compounds were hardly affected by elevated CO2. The chlorophyll and carotenoid contents were not substantially affected at elevated CO2 and the chlorophyll a/b ratio remained unaltered. There was no acclimation of photosynthesis at elevated CO2; the photosynthetic capacity of leaves, which had completely developed at elevated CO2 was similar to that of leaves developed in ambient air. The possible consequences of an elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration to Arabidopsis thaliana in its natural habitat is discussed.  相似文献

Two rice ( Oryza sativa L.) cultivars of contrasting morphologies, IR-36 and Fujiyama-5, were exposed to ambient (360 μl l−1) and ambient plus 300 μl l−1 CO2 from time of emergence until ca 50% grain fill at the Duke University Phytotron, Durham, North Carolina. Exposure to increased CO2 resulted in about a 50% increase in the photosynthetic rate for both cultivars and photosynthetic enhancement was still evident after 3 months of exposure to a high CO2 environment. The photosynthetic response at 5% CO2 and the response of CO2 assimilation (A) to internal CO2 (Ci) suggest a reallocation of biochemical resources from RuBP carboxylation to RuBP regeneration. Increases in total plant biomass at elevated CO2 were approximately the same in both cultivars, although differences in allocation patterns were noted in root/shoot ratio. Differences in reproductive characteristics were also observed between cultivars at an elevated CO2 environment with a significant increase in harvest index for IR-36 but not for Fujiyama-5. Changes in carbon allocation in reproduction between these two cultivars suggest that lines of rice could be identified that would maximize reproductive output in a future high CO2 environment.  相似文献

Abstract. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of water stress in sweet potato ( Ipomoea batatas L. [Lam] 'Georgia Jet') on biomass production and plant-water relationships in an enriched CO2 atmosphere. Plants were grown in pots containing sandy loam soil (Typic Paleudult) at two concentrations of elevated CO2 and two water regimes in open-top field chambers. During the first 12 d of water stress, leaf xylem potentials were higher in plants grown in a CO2 concentration of 438 and 666 μmol mol−1 than in plants grown at 364 μmol mol−1. The 364 μmol mol−1 CO2 grown plants had to be rewatered 2 d earlier than the high CO2-grown plants in response to water stress. For plants grown under water stress, the yield of storage roots and root: shoot ratio were greater at high CO2 than at 364 μmol mol−1; the increase, however, was not linear with increasing CO2 concentrations. In well-watered plants, biomass production and storage root yield increased at elevated CO2, and these were greater as compared to water-stressed plants grown at the same CO2 concentration.  相似文献

The influence of the root holoparasitic angiosperm Orobanche minor Sm. on the biomass, photosynthesis, carbohydrate and nitrogen content of Trifolium repens L. was determined for plants grown at two CO2 concentrations (350 and 550 μmol mol−1). Infected plants accumulated less biomass than their uninfected counterparts, although early in the association there was a transient stimulation of growth. Infection also influenced biomass allocation both between tissues (infected plants had lower root:shoot ratios) and within tissues:infected roots were considerably thicker before the point of parasite attachment and thinner below. Higher concentrations of starch were also found in roots above the point of attachment, particularly for plants grown in elevated CO2. Elevated CO2 stimulated the growth of T. repens only during the early stages of development. There was a significant interaction between infection and CO2 on growth, with infected plants showing a greater response, such that elevated CO2 partly alleviated the effects of the parasite on host growth. Elevated CO2 did not affect total O. minor biomass per host, the number of individual parasites supported by each host, or their time of attachment to the host root system. Photosynthesis was stimulated by elevated CO2 but was unaffected by O. minor . There was no evidence of down-regulation of photosynthesis in T. repens grown at elevated CO2 in either infected or uninfected plants. The data are discussed with regard to the influence of elevated CO2 on other parasitic angiosperm-host associations and factors which control plant responses to elevated CO2.  相似文献

Abstract. Herbaceous C3 plants grown in elevated CO2 show increases in carbon assimilation and carbohydrate accumulation (particularly starch) within source leaves. Although changes in the partitioning of biomass between root and shoot occur, the proportion of this extra assimilate made available for sink growth is not known. Root:shoot ratios tend to increase for CO2-enriched herbaceous plants and decrease for CO2-enriched trees. Root:shoot ratios for cereals tend to remain constant. In contrast, elevated temperatures decrease carbohydrate accumulation within source and sink regions of a plant and decrease root:shoot ratios. Allometric analysis of at least two species showing changes in root: shoot ratios due to elevated CO2 show no alteration in the whole-plant partitioning of biomass. Little information is available for interactions between temperature and CO2. Cold-adapted plants show little response to elevated levels of CO2, with some species showing a decline in biomass accumulation. In general though, increasing temperature will increase sucrose synthesis, transport and utilization for CO2-enriched plants and decrease carbohydrate accumulation within the leaf. Literature reports are discussed in relation to the hypothesis that sucrose is a major factor in the control of plant carbon partitioning. A model is presented in support.  相似文献

Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) stimulates seed mass production in many species, but the extent of stimulation shows large variation among species. We examined (1) whether seed production is enhanced more in species with lower seed nitrogen concentrations, and (2) whether seed production is enhanced by elevated [CO2] when the plant uses more N for seed production. We grew 11 annuals in open top chambers that have different [CO2] conditions (ambient: 370 μmol mol−1, elevated: 700 μmol mol−1). Elevated [CO2] significantly increased seed production in six out of 11 species with a large interspecific variation (0.84–2.12, elevated/ambient [CO2]). Seed nitrogen concentration was not correlated with the enhancement of seed production by elevated [CO2]. The enhancement of seed production was strongly correlated with the enhancement of seed nitrogen per plant caused by increased N acquisition during the reproductive period. In particular, legume species tended to acquire more N and produced more seeds at elevated [CO2] than non-nitrogen fixing species. Elevated [CO2] little affected seed [N] in all species. We conclude that seed production is limited primarily by nitrogen availability and will be enhanced by elevated [CO2] only when the plant is able to increase nitrogen acquisition.  相似文献

Elevated CO2 appears to be a significant factor in global warming, which will likely lead to drought conditions in many areas. Few studies have considered the interactive effects of higher CO2, temperature and drought on plant growth and physiology. We grew canola ( Brassica napus cv. 45H72) plants under lower (22/18°C) and higher (28/24°C) temperature regimes in controlled-environment chambers at ambient (370 μmol mol−1) and elevated (740 μmol mol−1) CO2 levels. One half of the plants were watered to field capacity and the other half at wilting point. In three separate experiments, we determined growth, various physiological parameters and content of abscisic acid (ABA), indole-3-acetic acid and ethylene. Drought-stressed plants grown under higher temperature at ambient CO2 had decreased stem height and diameter, leaf number and area, dry matter, leaf area ratio, shoot/root weight ratio, net CO2 assimilation and chlorophyll fluorescence. However, these plants had increased specific leaf weight, leaf weight ratio and chlorophyll concentration. Elevated CO2 generally had the opposite effect, and partially reversed the inhibitory effects of higher temperature and drought on leaf dry weight accumulation. This study showed that higher temperature and drought inhibit many processes but elevated CO2 partially mitigate some adverse effects. As expected, drought stress increased ABA but higher temperature inhibited the ability of plants to produce ABA in response to drought.  相似文献

Using a laboratory-constructed system that can measure the gas exchange rates of two leaf surfaces separately, the light responses of the adaxial and abaxial stomata in intact leaves of sunflower ( Helianthus annuus L.) were investigated, keeping the intercellular CO2 concentration ( C i) at 300  µ L L−1. When evenly illuminating both sides of the leaf, the stomatal conductance ( g s) of the abaxial surface was higher than that of the adaxial surface at any light intensity. When each surface of the leaf was illuminated separately, both the adaxial and abaxial stomata were more sensitive to the light transmitted through the leaf (self-transmitted light) than to direct illumination. Relationships between the whole leaf photosynthetic rate ( A n) and the g s for each side highlighted a strong dependence of stomatal opening on mesophyll photosynthesis. Light transmitted through another leaf was more effective than the direct white light for the abaxial stomata, but not for the adaxial stomata. Moreover, green monochromatic light induced an opening of the abaxial stomata, but not of the adaxial stomata. As the proportion of blue light in the transmitted light is less than that in the white light, there may be some uncharacterized light responses, which are responsible for the opening of the abaxial stomata by the transmitted, green light.  相似文献

Interactive effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on biomass production and N2 fixation were investigated using black locust ( Robinia pseudoacacia ). Seedlings were grown in growth chambers maintained at either 350 μmol mol−1 or 710 μmol mol−1 CO2. Seedlings were inoculated with Rhizobium spp. and were grown with or without AM fungi. The 15N isotope dilution method was used to determine N source partitioning between N2 fixation and inorganic fertilizer uptake. Elevated atmospheric CO2 significantly increased the percentage of fine roots that were colonized by AM fungi. Mycorrhizal seedlings grown under elevated CO2 had the greatest overall plant biomass production, nodulation, N and P content, and root N absorption. Additionally, elevated CO2 levels enhanced nodule and root mass production, as well as N2 fixation rates, of non- mycorrhizal seedlings. However, the relative response of biomass production to CO2 enrichment was greater in non-mycorrhizal seedlings than in mycorrhizal seedlings. This study provides strong evidence that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi play an important role in the extent to which plant nutrition of symbiotic N2-fixing tree species is affected by enriched atmospheric CO2.  相似文献

Effects of the current (38 Pa) and an elevated (74 Pa) CO2 partial pressure on root and shoot areas, biomass accumulation and daily net CO2 exchange were determined for Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Miller, a highly productive Crassulacean acid metabolism species cultivated worldwide. Plants were grown in environmentally controlled rooms for 18 weeks in pots of three soil volumes (2 600, 6 500 and 26 000 cm3), the smallest of which was intended to restrict root growth. For plants in the medium-sized soil volume, basal cladodes tended to be thicker and areas of main and lateral roots tended to be greater as the CO2 level was doubled. Daughter cladodes tended to be initiated sooner at the current compared with the elevated CO2 level but total areas were similar by 10 weeks. At 10 weeks, daily net CO2 uptake for the three soil volumes averaged 24% higher for plants growing under elevated compared with current CO2 levels, but at 18 weeks only 3% enhancement in uptake occurred. Dry weight gain was enhanced 24% by elevated CO2 during the first 10 weeks but only 8% over 18 weeks. Increasing the soil volume 10-fold led to a greater stimulation of daily net CO2 uptake and biomass production than did doubling the CO2 level. At 18 weeks, root biomass doubled and shoot biomass nearly doubled as the soil volume was increased 10-fold; the effects of soil volume tended to be greater for elevated CO2. The amount of cladode nitrogen per unit dry weight decreased as the CO2 level was raised and increased as soil volume increased, the latter suggesting that the effects of soil volume could be due to nitrogen limitations.  相似文献

To study the influence of elevated CO2 and nitrogen (N) fertilization on wood properties and energy, Populus × euramericana trees were exposed to ambient CO2 (about 370 μmol mol−1 CO2) or elevated CO2 (about 550 μmol mol−1 CO2) using Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) technology in combination with two N levels. Elevated CO2 was maintained for 5 years. After three growing seasons, the plantation was coppiced, one half of each experimental plot was fertilized and secondary sprouts were harvested after two growing seasons. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra of wood revealed significant effects of both elevated CO2 and N fertilization on wood chemistry, in particular, significant increases in lignin and decreases in N content. These results were corroborated by chemical analysis. Neither elevated CO2 nor N fertilization affected the calorific value of wood, which was 19.3 MJ kg−1. N fertilization enhanced the energy production per land area by 16–69% because of higher aboveground woody biomass production than on nonfertilized land. Estimates indicate that high yielding poplar short rotation cultivation may significantly contribute as an alternative feedstock for energy production.  相似文献
