ABSTRACT. A new amoeba, isolated from well water in Gambia, West Africa, is described and named Phreatamoeba balamuthi n. g., n. sp. Requiring anaerobic conditions for growth, it is easily cultured monoxenically with Escherichia coli or axenically in complex, undefined organic media. Three phenotypes have been observed in the life cycle: an amoeba, a flagellate, and a cyst. The amoeba moves by monopodia, is predominantly multinucleate, and varies from 11 to 160 μm in length. The flagellate has a single flagellum and is from 6 to 50 μm long. The cyst is surrounded by a resistant wall that lacks pores and ranges from 9 to 18 μm in diameter. The transformation from amoeba to flagellate can be induced nutritionally, the exact inducing factor(s) being unknown. Sexual reproduction has not been observed.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Oocysts and endogenous stages of new species of Eimeria and Isospora from the house lizard, Gehyra mutilata, are described. The ellipsoid to subspherical 2-layered oocysts of E. cicaki averaged 24.0 × 21.0 μm. Polar granules are present. Micropyle and oocyst residuum are absent. Ellipsoid sporocysts average 12.2 × 9.0 μm. A sporocyst residuum is present, but the Stieda body is absent. Endogenous stages are in epithelial cells of the small intestine. The subspherical single-layered oocysts of I. thavari average 23.8 × 22.8 μm. The polar granule is present; micropyle and oocyst residuum are absent. Ellipsoid sporocysts average 12.8 × 9.4 μm. Stieda body and sporocyst residuum are present. There are endogenous stages in epithelial cells of the small intestine.  相似文献

Kudoa cerebralis sp. n. is described from connective tissue of the nervous system in the striped bass, Morone saxatilis (Walbaum), from the southern Chesapeake Bay area. This is the first time the genus Kudoa has been found in association with the nervous system. The polar view mean diameter of the spores was 7.0 μm and the polar capsule mean length was 3.7 μm.  相似文献

Abstract

Longidorus orongorongensis n. sp. is bisexual and recognisable from its large size (adults over 6 mm long), long odontostyle (145-172 μm), bluntly conoid lip region continuous with the body contour and especially by the posteriorly placed guide ring more than 60 μm from the oral aperture; also the female has a bluntly rounded tailless than an anal body width long. The first stage juvenile has a bluntly rounded tail. Juveniles and adults from one site below virgin forest are described.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. A trichomonad flagellate, Tritrichomonas mobilensis n. sp., is described from the large intestine of the squirrel monkey, Saimiri boliviensis boliviensis. The organism has a lanceolate body 7–10.5 μm in length; a well developed undulating membrane; a stout, tubular axostyle with periaxostylar rings that terminate in a cone-shaped segment projecting from the posterior end of the cell; and a moderately wide costa. The anterior flagella are about as long as the body, and the recurrent flagellum is of the acroneme type. All its characteristics suggest that the new species belongs in the Tritrichomonas augusta type of the subfamily Tritrichomonadinae.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Toxoplasma ranae sp. n. is described from the brain of a leopard frog, Rana pipiens, probably from Mexico. Its pseudocysts were 72(55-106) × 48(29-70) μm in fixed sections. They contained an average of ~ 4,000 slightly curved elongate zoites measuring 4–5 × 0.5 μm, with a central, spherical, vesicular nucleus.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Eimeria tenggilingi is described from the pangolin or scaly anteater, Manis javanica, in Malaysia. The spheroid to subspheroid oocysts average 18.9 × 17.8 μm. The oocyst wall is composed of 3 layers, each ~ 0.6 μm thick. The 2 outer layers are striated and yellowish green. The inner layer is dark brown. One or 2 polar granules are present, but an oocyst residuum is absent. Ellipsoid sporocysts average 12.4 × 6.2 μm. A sporocyst residuum is present. This is the first Eimeria species reported from a host in the order Pholidota.  相似文献

Keelungia pulex nov. gen. et nov. sp. is described from coastal waters of NE Taiwan. The new species is heterotrophic and feeds on bacteria. Cells are oblong-ovoid, biflagellate and glide along the sides of the flask. Each cell is approximately 8–11 μm long, and one of the smallest euglenoid flagellates presently known. Keelungia lacks pellicular plates and in this respect resembles diplonemids and Symbiontida, which are thought to be among the basal groups of Euglenozoa. SEM showed the presence of 10 evenly spaced longitudinal striae in the cell surface, but the striae are difficult to see in the light microscope. TEM showed each stria to comprise a double set of very low longitudinal ridges separated by a shallow furrow, and supported by ca 5 microtubules beneath the plasmalemma, unlike the situation in diplonemids and Symbiontida. The cell surface was further subtended by an extensive system of rough cisternae of endoplasmic reticulum. Keelungia pulex is phylogenetically related to species of Ploeotia and to Lentomonas applanata, but differs in details of the feeding apparatus and in the absence of pellicular plates. Sequencing of SSU rDNA indicates that Ploeotia, Keelungia and Entosiphon form a clade near the base of the euglenoid phylogenetic tree.  相似文献

Isospora dawadimiensis n. sp. is described from the jerboa, Jaculus jaculus, from Dawadimi, Saudi Arabia. Sporulated oocysts of I. dawadimiensis n. sp. were ovoidal or nearly subspherical 22–26.5 times 20.5–22 μm (24.4 times 21.4 μm). Oocyst wall had one layer. Micropyle, oocyst residuum, and polar granule were absent. Sporocysts were ellipsoid 12–16.5 times 9–10.5 μm (14.6 times 9.9 μm). Sporocyst residuum was present. The sporocysts lack a Stieda body. Sporozoites 8–11 times 2–3 μm (10 times 2.6 μm) were sausage-shaped, slightly curved, and tapered at one end.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. We discovered a free‐living peritrich ciliate with outstanding features in the River Rhine. Its morphology and 18S rRNA gene sequence were studied with standard methods. Apocarchesium arndti n. sp. has several peculiarities. (i) There are ordinary zooids, macrozooids, and microzooids, which form a hemispherical rosette on a discoidal base, the stalk dish, locking the ~18 μm wide and up to 2 mm long, spirally contracting colony stalk. (ii) The stalk myoneme is connected only to the microzooids. (iii) A rosette contains up to 50 zooids not connected to each other but individually attached to the stalk dish with the scopula. (iv) The ordinary zooids are epistylidid, trumpet‐shaped (~6:1 length:width), about 180 × 30 μm in size, and have an ellipsoidal macronucleus subapically between oral cavity and dorsal side. (v) The myoneme system of the zooids, which can contract individually, forms a tube‐like structure in the narrow posterior half of the cell. (vi) The silverline pattern belongs to the transverse‐striate type. (vii) The oral apparatus is of usual structure, with kinety 1 of peniculus 3 distinctly shortened proximally. (viii) The 18S rRNA places A. arndti n. sp. as a distinct lineage near Vorticella and Carchesium. These data are used to provide an improved diagnosis of the genus Apocarchesium. Features (i)–(iii) and the molecular data indicate that Apocarchesium could be the type genus of a new peritrich family.  相似文献

Oocysts of Calyptospora empristica n. sp., the second described species in its genus, are described from the freshwater starhead topminnow, Fundulus notti, in southern Mississippi. Oocysts are 22 μm in diameter with a wall about 20 nm thick and have no residuum, micropyle, or polar granule. Sporocysts are spheroid, 9 × 5 μm with a two-layered wall approximately 120 nm thick. They have an oblong apical opening at the anterior pole, a single ornamented sporopodium approximately 5.7 μm long at the posterior pole, and a residuum. An intermediate host, most likely the freshwater grass shrimp Palaemonetes kadiakensis, is probably required to complete the life cycle.  相似文献

All Stylonychia mytilus-like ciliates which were collected and sent to us during the last 20 years belonged either to S. mytilus or to a new species, S. lemnae, which is described here. The only morphological differences are the shape and the size. Stylonychia mytilus that have been starved for one day average 300 μm in length, and S. lemnae starved for a day are 230 μm long. Trypanosoma pacifica sp. n. is described from the blood of the English sole, Parophrys vetulus Girard, from Oregon. The total length averages 35.9 μm of which 15.4 μm is free flagellum. ABSTRACT. Examination of the anterior region of Spirochona gemmipara by combined use of interference contrast microscopy, protargol staining, and transmission electron microscopy has revealed the existence of a cytoproctal apparatus and of an excretory system (contractile vacuole complex), that have often been confused with each other and with the cytopharynx. The cytoproctal apparatus is comprised of an external orifice located at the base of the collar, a cytoproctal canal that is about 20 μm long and delimited by a pellicle with alveoli, and the cytoproct itself. The contractile vauole complex is composed of 6–8 sinuous canals, up to 20 μm long, each of which opens to the exterior by a pore situated among the ciliature of the collar. An ostium, which is the internal orifice of each canal, is connected with a contractile vacuole that is contiguous with a well developed tubular spongiome. Although deeply set, the cytoproct and ostia of S. gemmipara do not appear to be basically different from the corresponding structures described in Paramecium and Tetrahymena.  相似文献

Three new benthic, photosynthetic dinoflagellate species, Prorocentrum norrisianum, Prorocentrum tropicalis, and Prorocentrum reticulatum, from floating detritus and coral rubble of Central America are described from scanning electron micrographs. Species were identified based on shape, size, surface micromorphology, thecal plate ornamentation, and architecture of the periflagellar area and intercalary band. Cells of P. norrisianum are ovate with a cell size of 20–25 μm long and 13–16 μm wide. The theca is delicate, its surface smooth, pores species specific with 95 to 105 pores per valve. Pores are round with a diameter of about 0.1 μm. The periflagellar area is V-shaped, located on the right valve in a shallow depression. It has no ornamentation. The flagellar and auxiliary pores are unequal in size. The intercalary band is smooth. Prorocentrum tropicalis cells are ovoid, 50–55 μm long and 40–45 μm wide in valve view with maximum width behind the middle region, narrow at the anterior end. The periflagellar area, situated in the right valve, is a V-shaped wide triangle with a deeply indented depression; the left valve exhibits a flat ridge. The periflagellar area is unornamented, and the flagellar and auxiliary pores are unequal in size. The valve surface is rugose with evenly distributed valve poroids. Each poroid appears to have a small dome in the center. The intercalary band is rimlike around the cell margin, granulated, and horizontally striated. Prorocentrum reticulatum cells are oblong in valve view; cells are 55–60 μm long and 40–45 μm wide. Thecal surface is reticulated; it is composed of a labyrinth of ridges with alternating depressions that vary in size and shape. Each depression has a narrow, oblong-kidney-shaped opening about 0.6 μm long. The periflagellar area is a deep, V-shaped triangle. The right valve of P. reticulatum is excavated, and contains a large flagellar pore and a smaller auxiliary pore surrounded by a narrow apical collar. The left valve margin exhibits a curved flat ridge. The intercalary band is smooth.  相似文献

The envelope and stalk of Colacium mucronatum Bourr. & Chad, were examined in living cells with light microscopy and in fixed preparations with scanning electron microscopy using critically point dried (CPD) and freeze dried (FD) preparations. The envelope of palmelloid cells is formed over the entire cell surface by many individual strands attached at right angles to areas of articulation of the pellicular strips. Strands were observed to anastomose on the posterior tip of otherwise naked cells. Stalks of living cells in India ink preparations had an optically dark inner core with a lighter outer sheath. In FD stalks a definite inner core was not evident, whereas CPD stalks had an outer surface composed of thick strands which may be the collapsed and aggregated strands of the FD stalks. In both there was also an amorphous matrix. The stalk forms from the aggregation of many strands from the anterior cell tip back to a point encompassing the cell surface anterior to a cross section of the tip 9 μm diam. The outer surface of the stalk comes from the pellicular surface joining that area and the core from the cell tip in the area of the canal opening. Any possible participation of the inner canal surface in stalk formation could not be determined because of the great density of the mucilage at the cell-tip/stalk junction.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Parastrombidinopsis minima n. sp. is investigated, using live observations, protargol preparations, and molecular data. In living cells, the ranges of cell length are 85–95 μm, cell width 60–70 μm, and oral diameter 40–50 μm. In protargol‐impregnated specimens, cell length ranges between 43 and 71 μm, cell width between 23 and 42 μm, and oral diameter between 13 and 24 μm. The numbers of external oral polykinetids are 12–16 and of somatic kineties are 11–13. There are always two ovoid macronuclei (9–16 × 4–9 μm). Based on the analysis of morphologic data, the new species can be placed in the family Strombidinopsidae, but based on the small subunit rRNA gene sequence data, the Parastrombidinopsis species are more closely associated with strobilidiids and tintinnids.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The life cycle and morphology of a previously undescribed species of Cryptosporidium isolated from commercial broiler chickens is described. The prepatent period for Cryptosporidium baileyi n. sp. was three days post oral inoculation (PI) of oocysts, and the patent period was days 4–24 PI for chickens inoculated at two days of age and days 4–14 for chickens inoculated at one and six months of age. During the first three days PI, most developmental stages of C. baileyi were found in the microvillous region of enterocytes of the ileum and large intestine. By day 4 PI, most parasites occurred in enterocytes of the cloaca and bursa of Fabricius (BF). Mature Type I meronts with eight merozoites first appeared 12 h PI and measured 5.0 × 4.9 μm. Mature Type II meronts with four merozoites and a large granular residuum first appeared 48 h PI and measured 5.1 × 5.1 μm. Type I meronts with eight short merozoites and a large homogeneous residuum first appeared 72 h PI and measured 5.2 × 5.1 μm. Microgamonts (4.0 × 4.0 μm) produced 16 micro-gametes that penetrated into macrogametes (4.7 × 4.7 μm). Macrogametes gave rise to two types of oocysts that sporulated within the host cells. Most were thick-walled oocysts (6.3 × 5.2 μm), the resistant forms that passed unaltered in the feces. Some were thin-walled oocysts whose wall (membrane) readily ruptured upon release from the host cell. Sporozoites from thin-walled oocysts were observed penetrating enterocytes in mucosal smears. The presence of thin-walled, autoinfective oocysts and the recycling of Type I meronts may explain why chickens develop heavy intestinal infections lasting up to 21 days. Oocysts of C. baileyi were inoculated orally into several animals to determine its host specificity. Cryptosporidium baileyi did not produce infections in suckling mice and goats or in two-dayold or two-week-old quail. One of six 10-day-old turkeys had small numbers of asexual stages only in the BF. Four of six one-day-old turkeys developed mild infections only in the BF, and sexual stages of the parasite were observed in only one of the four. All seven one-day-old ducks and seven two-day-old geese developed heavy infections only in the BF with all known developmental stages present.  相似文献

Eimeria dalli sp. n. is described from fecal samples collected from Dall sheep, Ovis dalli, from the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. The oocysts are spherical or subspherical with mean dimensions of 43.7 × 37.4 μm. The outer oocyst wall is rough and irregular. No micropyle, micropylar cap or residuum was observed. Sporocysts were elongate ovoid with mean dimensions of 19.0 × 10.7 μm. Stieda bodies were not discernible.  相似文献
